    Anyways, for some reason I like this game. I shouldn’t like it, because the menu system is so clunky and the dueling is complete crap, but I have fun with it…except for the dueling.

It actually used to sound more like the current American accent until the Queen had it changed in the 17th or 18th century, I can’t remember which. Basically, she changed the “er” and “aa” sounds to “ah” to make it sound more “beautiful”. So Kevin Costner’s American accent was actually an accuracy rather than an inaccuracy of the film.

The problem: you don’t KNOW the passwords, and they’re all broken. Yes broken. They’ll put you where they say, oh yeah, but with a random outlay of gear. The endgame password makes damn sure to NOT give you the Druid’s Dagger so you can’t beat the Giant Skeleton and finish the game. It’s useless.

    If you hold START during the 2D swordfights, it acts as a “Turbo On” button, and if you then jump while holding it, the game forgets to bring you back down after jumps. Do it enough times and you jump up…and wrap around to the bottom of the screen, where you can stab people in the legs with impunity.

    And the big thing: if Declan (Duncan? The blind guy) is holding anything super important when the game ‘writes him out’ midway in, you never get it back. Ever. Unless you go into into your inventory and scroll through your men, where you’ll find a guy with random garbage for a name carrying Duncan’s crap. Take it NOW, because it disappears if you switch characters.

    The manual had a half-dozen or so items that don’t exist in the game. And worst of all, this thing was delayed nearly _a year_ from its original release date in 1990 to _fix substantial issues_. I own this game, still in the box, and I’ve beaten it without cheating. It’s…not worth it. At all. No way.

    I remember wasting far too much precious time on this game in the early nineties. I wasted one sunday beating the whole thing. It took me like 5 hours. My nintendo never fully recovered. Needless to say I was pretty sick of it by the end. Still I did like the game because it was the first multi character rpg I ever played.

I just remember that after little john everything got really easy, aside from the big skeleton thing. It actually got to the point where it was so easy it was boring. I wasnt a bright kid though, so i might be thinking about starfox or something.

    The music at the end of the review is from the Robin Hood Disney cartoon right. I loved that as a kid but that was so many moons ago I cannot be certain. Love your work by the way. I have just spent a lazy Sunday watching your entire catalogue of reviews. I haven’t laughed so hard in such a long time.
    Have to say that I am also surprised that there have been a few negative comments relating to the “British accent = gay” thing. Common you brits, with such great comedic works as Monty Python, Black Adder and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy coming from your fine country you should know sarcasm when you see it.

    Is it me or… in the dialog scenes, Robin looks like David Hasslehoff… and in the ending screen he looks like Christopher Lambert. I don’t know, just looks that way.

    It surprises me Spoony One never made mention of Everything I Do I Do It For You by Bryan Adams in this review, granted it was obviously not featured in the game, but any mention of Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves often involves that song

    I think that's the first time I've ever seen a movie license game that had absolutely no likeness of any of the actors involved. Robin Hood looked more like Christian Slater than Kevin Costner, Aziz looked nothing at all like Morgan Freeman, and King Richard looked like JESUS CHRIST (though this may have been a roundabout compliment to Connery by the programmers). What the hell is up with that? I mean, even Dirty Harry had Clint's digitized mug greet you on the title screen. Did they do this without permission from the studio or something?

    OK I had a rlly crappy game for the gba when i was younger called shrek throwdown or somthing like that, and it was this exact brocken stab in the balls combat system, but all you did was line up to face the next guy wich pissed me off as a kid trying to find was to beat the game and it ended up with me getting a gingie and pwning bitches with my candy cane and w8 for them to fall into the ground as the game glitched up ….

    I’ve only played for a bit, but I like this game, and I think the fights aren’t NEARLY as hard as he makes them out to be. As long as you aren’t completely reckless and just run forward spamming the attack button, it’s very much possible to get a jab in there and back away in time.

    The towers are unforgivable.

    Great review regardless! I almost never agree with you anyway, and that’s a part of the charm. You seem to exaggerate extremely.

      I don’t know how you’d consider this game anything worth playing for other than mockery purposes to be honest… There are MANY similiar games, which are just executed better. Going through the same few types of action over again through a game is just ridiculous. Especially when the best way (note: Not the only way, but the best way) to win is just plain explotation of the game’s bad coding. (Hitting guys in their knees when they’re on top of a table)

        I’m not extremely picky when it comes to games, and I enjoy most games to a degree.

        I do admit that it’s not a particularly good game, but I don’t think it’s a horrible one either. Flawed, yes, but I had some fun.

        Most of today’s games, on the PC at least, seem to suffer from at least as many (even if not as big) flaws upon their initial release. They’ve made it a trend to release unfinished games because patching them has become convenient. I hate this fact. Look at Gothic 3 and more recently, Final Fantasy XIV.

    dude!!! i had this game, hell. i still have this game packed away with my NES. i remember loving the inventory options and hating everything else. in fact this game is what made me try rpgs later on just because of the equipment possibilities. so i can’t say i hated this game. i do remember there being a password system or maybe it was a button sequence because at 4-5 years old the only way i ever beat it was to use the password or sequence and it starts you at the end, fighting the skeleton with the dagger.

    Oh man, THANK you for this video.  I know I’m like… five years late on this bad boy, but… I can’t tell you how many people I confront about this game in conversations about shitty NES games and it seems I’m the only person in my circle of friends who played this.

    I rented it several times and loved it… as a 10 year old… Emulating it in college horrified me.  I got about as far as breaking up the wedding before just plain giving up…  Fuck this game, fuck Kevin Costner, and fuck the color orange.  I still believe I have to wear glasses because of this game’s color scheme.

    Interestingly enough, there IS a password system to this game!  Unfortunately, it’s a hidden feature.  I guess you were never actually meant ta use it, but I don’t see why the heck not!  Long-ass, broken-ass game…

    I played this when I was young I found out that after you beat little John you can take his staff and use it, it spins over Robins head as long as you hold the button and bad guys will walk into it and explode. What I did was right after I got the staff I put a adjustable wrench on the controller holding down the attack button then went and watched tv after a hour or two Robin would be max level makes the game much easier.

    The best Robin Hood movie ever is the Patrick Bergin version that came out the same year. It has Uma Thurman as Maid Marian, and Jurgen Prochnow as the villain(for some reason, the Sheriff of Nottingham isn’t in this one).
