The Spoony Experiment

FMV Hell – Johnny Mnemonic

by Scarlett on November 30, 2007 · View Comments

Take a tour of the FMV games I grew up playing and learn how they scarred my existence! There’s more to come, and we’re leading up to a full-length review of one of the oddest FMV games ever made! Now we tackle the most dreaded of the FMV titles: the interactive movies. We begin with Foxhunt and continue on to one of the rarest and most difficult games to run: Johnny Mnemonic.

He’s a data courier in a future that hasn’t invented e-mail or thumb drives, and if you touch the computers your head explodes. Jeez, even in the future nothing works. Will Johnny ever find the rest of his computer so he can start tracking down that damn download code? And will it do him any good since every computer he touches melts his brain?

Only Chef can provide those answers, so we head to the Lo-Tek headquarters to hack our own brains and to get our hands on some chocolate salty balls!

Were you going to review minority report? Did I miss that?

Phalyn January 2, 2009 at 12:34 am

This goes to show how good of an actor Christopher Walken and John Rhyes Davis are, they took their roles seriously, and made them believeable

basti January 2, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Hilarious! That’s definetly the funniest and most sophisticated FMV-Review i’ve seen for a while. :) :D Sometimes I think Spoony an me had the same childhood (and definetly the same FMV collection). ;) More! More! There are so many more FMV-Games to do. ;)

(by the way: There is another (rather good) FMV game called Burn:Cycle which was mainly a rip-of of “Johnny Mnemonic” for CD-i, Mac and Windows.)

William January 6, 2009 at 3:19 pm

Niels January 13, 2009 at 6:48 am

That money was a old Dutch 100 Gulden note

James January 13, 2009 at 8:25 am

Am I the only one who, when they heard “phantasmagoria,” they yelled out “PHANTASMAGORIA!!!!11″?

Farnesy January 15, 2009 at 2:54 am

What?!No Keanu Reeves!Its a disgrace!

BobJr January 15, 2009 at 12:59 pm

I love this one Spoony, watching it over and over again running it in the bagground while i play ma’ games :P

Oh and yes, was there supposed to be a minority report game review?

Farnesy January 16, 2009 at 4:32 am

Who is the actor playing Jonny in this game?

screamqueen3110 January 16, 2009 at 5:45 am

i never played a lot of these games but i do remember seeing them. the one i did play was the first xfiles game and i didnt mind it until i got to the bit that was shown in this vid. i saved it 2 secs before this and as soon as i loaded the game i died. i had to play the entire game again i couldnt believe it. i did eventially finish it a year later within 3 days.

Mikkabouzu January 24, 2009 at 6:37 pm

Hey, I liked The Journeyman Project, and if the crappy visuals are an issue, the remake version is even better. I would recommend both the sequels, Buried in Time and Legacy of Time, for some excellent time-travel adventuring.

Danimal January 24, 2009 at 11:17 pm

I remember those awesome Tex Murphy games! Under a Killing Moon was the best I thought but I’ve only played Overseer (shitty) and Under A Killing Moon… although I haven’t played either one since before the turn of the millennium. Wow, looking back, FMV games deserved to die a horrible death.

waype January 25, 2009 at 1:39 pm

i always laugh so hard when you use the fuse box count xD

DarkRidley January 29, 2009 at 9:12 am

The Journeyman Project was great. I loved Legacy of Time in particular, but it was a pretty fun series overall. I don’t see why you don’t like it.

KesslerSxE February 2, 2009 at 1:03 am

Wow! I totally remember Megarace! Took me 6 years to figure out that I could actually accelerate too…

and to be totally honest… We still have Foxhunt and Johnny Mnemonic sitting on our shelves here at home. :P

ThatSpecialRetard February 12, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I remember Journeyman Project for Windows. I was little back then and it scared the pure SHIT OUT OF ME. Sure going back in time to find different objects is fun, But hearing voices from no where and experiencing a future where there is a dead silence and the music will make you shit yourself will have you sitting in the fucking corner with a flashlight.

MatthewH February 13, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Noah….YOu are forgetting one of the most bizarre and downright fucked up FMV games of all time…Harvester. I’m not kidding. That game was hands down the weirdest thing I’ve ever played.

Lord Xenu February 22, 2009 at 3:46 am

Really enjoy your videos! And your reference to Scientology and Lord Xenu after mentioning Isaac Hayes?! Pure WIN!

Okay, I have a question. I’ve got a copy of Overseer (One of the Tex Murphy series, duh), and am not able to play it. Do I need DosBOX for it? I have DosBOX on my Linux computer, but not for my FailXP computer. Do I need?

Again, epic fucking win!

alldreamsfalldown March 10, 2009 at 4:29 pm

WTF? You feature Myst and don’t give it a credit? *Outraged*

Game suggstion: Psychic Detective.

Connor March 17, 2009 at 8:58 am

What no MR T?
game suggestion: Indigo Prophecy

Rattrap007 March 17, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Foxhound? I had that game! When I saw the wierd pose the guy did it came flooding back to me. God was that a bad game. I hope you do a full review sometime…

Speaking of FMV games, how about Police Quest: Swat. That was somewhat FMV iirc. That was semi decent and would be fun to see you do.

Rattrap007 March 17, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Foxhunt.. not foxhound…

Jay April 2, 2009 at 8:00 am

Where is the mention of Harvester? :(

btw love the use of silent hill 2 music in the end :)

poop April 4, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Tom April 7, 2009 at 10:03 am

DonZabu April 12, 2009 at 10:57 am

The way you used the cowbell joke was brilliant.

Orin April 14, 2009 at 12:06 am

Sweet! You used the deathcoaster music from Army of Darkness over the fighting instructions!

StainedSword April 15, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Pro tip: Don’t get beat up by Andy Dick!

XD

I want that on a shirt!

penguin April 18, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Hey Noah,

The money that Johnny gives the homeless man in the sewer is the original Dutch money (from the Netherlands), obviously way before we moved to the Euro ;-)

Sean April 22, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Hey, don’t bash The Journeyman Project! It had great design for its time…

Yes May 1, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Holy shit the Daedelus Encounter??? AAAarrghh my childhood

starmandeluxe May 14, 2009 at 11:37 pm

Crazy Don reminds me of Bob from Twin Peaks. This review is one of my favorites btw :)

Badly-Drawn Manchild May 20, 2009 at 1:59 pm

One of my favourite reviews on this website. The analysis of Johnny Mnemonic was really funny.

I’d love to see you review some of the other games you showcase in greater detail one day; I already mentioned I’d love to see a review of The X-Files Game, but I’d love to see you look at the likes of Foxhunt and the Take-Two games.

Vance May 27, 2009 at 1:40 am

Ahh man your talking about how those games never worked, I never did get any to work as well…I always had to ask mom for help.

Paperclown May 31, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Another celebrity I noticed in this was the Virtual Reality scene.

The Bailiff from The People’s Court.

Paperclown May 31, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I’ve noticed this in a couple videos including this one : When he references the storage of floppy disks he says they are 3 1/2 megabytes. Disks were 1.44 meg and the size was 3.5 inches

YoJimBobaJoe June 1, 2009 at 2:13 pm

So did you ever get around to reviewing minority report or was it just to bad?

broken_chaos June 3, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is that box full, beneath the Minority Report game, of Terry Pratchett books wrapped in bubble wrap?

Mike June 6, 2009 at 3:00 am

not sure if its already been said, but the dude looks like a young jim carrey when he gets owned by the purple lightening

Brad June 7, 2009 at 11:50 am

are you ever going to review the minority report? or was that whole thing just a gag for the episode?

Paul June 9, 2009 at 2:15 pm

You know what’s sad? Spoony’s about ten times a better actor then Brad Pitt. For anyone who didn’t get the Seven reference, you’re missing a great flick.

Teodor June 17, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Dude, am a huge fan. I want to say: YOU ROCK!

PLS: give me a replay!
PLS2: I will give you money , wimen and power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeremy June 19, 2009 at 10:09 am

What’s that one song you always use during scrolling text themes? It sounds all epic and whatnot.

Rockyleet64 June 23, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Download everything, children.

Timeticker June 24, 2009 at 12:27 am

That was Dutch money @15:45, lol :-) The currency used before the Euro.

That-Green-Monkey June 24, 2009 at 12:46 am

LOL se7en SE7EN!!!!!!!

TheBest! July 10, 2009 at 8:15 pm

I need to see more of the Ripper! That is funny as hell!

Sigma July 13, 2009 at 3:22 am

Thanks for the reminder on one of my favorite Playstation games of all my early teens Noah. I’ve been combing your reviews for some time now to dig through the fog of my mind to unearth the name Fox Hunt for some time now. I just found it on Amazon for $20 too.

Say what you will about the game but I’ll pay $20 for a somewhat entertaining slice of my childhood brought to my door, only to have those fuzzy memories rendered to bloody gibbets by the cold unfeeling reality that awaits me. I’ll probably enjoy it anyhow.

Thanks.

Neeeeeeeeeerd July 16, 2009 at 9:28 am

What are 3.5 MB floppies? I know about 3.5 inch 1.44 MB floppies, as well as 5.25 inch 1.2MB ones.
