The Spoony Experiment

Ask Spoony 2

I sat myself down in front of a camera for 40 minutes to address some of my most common e-mails and questions from the message board. Hope you find it…illuminating.

if you have a game boy advanced colecting dust they maby if you have the time you should cheak out a game called “golden sun” (make shure you dont play “golden sun a lost age” first beacuse that is the sequal and these games have alot of plot devolpment) even though this game has a bunch of exposition it has unique twits on classic puzles. another good thing is they get most of the plot and expositon out of the way right off the getgo so you can have huge chunks of playing uninterupted in between. any way if you have the time it’s a game you might enjoy (or hate).

System Shock is now free on-line (SS1, NOT 2). Look for “System Shock Portable” and be amazed. It’s a wonderful piece of work by the long forgotten “Looking Glass Technologies”, the same guys who made Thief: The Dark Project.

Don’t even touch AOE3. It’s terrible.

Monkey Island was a nice touch.

Honestly, I have a lot of mixed emotions about 4th Edition D&D. When I heard it was coming out, I was a little excited to see what mods they were doing, because although most of my roleplaying experience was with 3rd Edition and Edition 3.5, I will admit I didn’t care for how it operated as a system at times. For instance, I thought that the prestige class system was WAY overused, and could have been simplified if standard classes were just given more customization options as they progress (or at least it would appear to be simpler to me, but maybe not in real life). Plus, to me, a lot of prestige classes opened up some glaring loopholes in the game’s mechanics that allowed for some awfully broken characters (which made my group EXTREMELY hard to play with at times, but I digress). I do like the creative flexibility that certain aspects of the d20 System has. For instance, if you had the time and the information, you could take almost any character or universe from any source and make it work within the game and even have it be somewhat balanced. But, I digress again.

I saw the previews for 4th Edition, and I was a little stoked about it, because I thought the kinks of 3rd and 3.5 were going to get worked out. When I read the rulebook, however, I felt very alienated by it basically turning itself into a tabletop version of WoW. As said in the video, I do see why they did that, and I do agree that WoTC are being very smart by doing so, considering WoW’s popularity, but I just don’t like WoW. That being said, however, now that I’ve been prompted to investigate it again, the game’s mechanics don’t look to be intrinsically bad: it still basically is the d20 System, which I do enjoy playing. And honestly, I’m willing to give it a chance if I can get my hands on the books and find a group willing to play.

When I heard ” Its a lot of fun” when it comes to final fantasy 8 made me change my entire opinion of you and your game review. I do hope you read this and if you get the time you can respond back to me.

Man, if only I lived in Arizona and could take you up on the offer to play some form of tabletop RPG. All the people I used to play with have scattered to the four corners of the earth and all the people I run into at gaming stores have their set campaign groups that they’ve been using forever, and have no plans to expand anytime soon.

Do you actually play guitar Spoony? If you do, I’d like to see a vid.

What’s with all the ff7 music?

Never really heard what you thought about it.

just a tiny bit of clarification, they released a book called the history of the realms that… basicly said all recorded history stopped. in the “Year of blue fire” some magor calamity happened, and for 100 years, there was no one to record history. i think they were trying to kill the realms so there authors could stop writing in them, but people got SOOOOO fucking mad about the year of blue fire thing that they brought it back. How they reamped it is that they killed like… all of the gods. I have not read everything written in the new realms yet but from my understanding, all of the plains vomited onto the material plain and there was a huge war. most of the weak gods- ehlona for example- were slaughtered by opposing religons and it was just an ugly scene. Luskan and Waterdeep both fell in the fire and now we face an all new rebuilding realms…

and yet Zhentel keep is still as duchy as ever.

just my two cents.

got you love to Spoony! gosh we have so much in coomon it not funny, if i’m ever in arizona I’ll give you a call. lol. you are the man. so are you going to do any more comics or was warrior it?

Well…why would people get upset abour D&D 4th edition. For the same reason you got mad at George Lucas for ruining Indiana Jones and Star Wars for you. They took something you cared for and that accompanied you through a good deal of your life and then mutilate it into something entirely different that hardly bears any resemblance to the original.
I get your arguments in favour of the changes, but I don’t think they will work out to be honest. I can’t see how the fact that D&D4 resembles WoW as a tabletop game will be a factor that atracts new audiences. One should ask why video games have taken over almost any branch of the entertainment indusrty? Because everything is already done for you. Kids can visually explore this world and don’t need to use their imagination. They can visually experience the story. It’s like watching a movie as opposed to reading a book.
I think what WoTC have managed is alienating an established ausience rather than attracting a new one.
But hard core fans will still adapt and live with the changes.

You mentioned Eternal Darkness I would love to see you do a review of this awesome game.

Troodon November 17, 2009 at 11:19 pm

When Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out… the fact that it sucked didn’t make the first 3 movies worse; they were still as good as they were before, you could still watch them, and if you want to pretend the 4th movie never existed and never see it again, you had that option.

Same principle applies. If you hate 4th edition… don’t buy the books, don’t play it.

Honestly I could never understand why people get angry when movies, books, TV shows, games, etc. come out that they don’t like; nobody’s pointing a gun at your head forcing you to watch or play them; you don’t like it, just ignore it, problem solved. There’s many forms of entertainment that exist I don’t like; but their mere existance doesn’t bother me, I just stayaway from what I don’t like. Really, what’s the big deal?

acratus February 13, 2010 at 9:59 pm

Don't undersell yourself, Spoony. What if one of your potential employers saw this video? Do you think they'd appreciate you beating up on yourself?

yuggothian February 16, 2010 at 10:45 pm

Interesting to see you just sit down and talk about yourself. I don't know, it's just very enlightening.

Anybody here know the name of the song that starts playing at 20:34 or where it's from? I NEED to know. Seriously, you'll officially be awarded 11 internets if you know.

Ripheus February 19, 2010 at 11:02 pm

yuggothian –

I believe the song at 20:34 is “Mega Man 3 Blue Lightning Remix” by Disco Dan. You can find it here:

I think it's funny how almost every background song that's being played is on my most common playlist setting

Krista McLaughlin May 22, 2010 at 8:03 pm

wow, that was a very “please, sit. we need to have a talk.” sort of Ask Spoony. interesting, though. c:
