FMV Hell – Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers

Our journey into FMV Hell gets even more horrifying as The Spoony One confronts the nefarious Rita Repulsa in the Sega CD game Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.

It’s morphin’ time!

I used to watch the original power rangers all the time when I was a kid. I too never made it past the first incarnation, but they were cheesy fun. I would still watch the original ones. I actually, played this "game" at a friends house when I was young..er. I remember liking it, so I bought it some time ago, and I still like it. It brings back memories of the show and my child hood. Plus, I liked quick-time button pressing for some odd reason.

Weren't there like 75 side-scrolling beat-em-ups based on Power Rangers? This one wanted to give us something... ... ... more.

As a disclaimer to that last comment, let me add that I'm not saying Ecco or Sol-Feace were bad games; just that there wasn't really much reason for there to be Sega CD versions of them.

The nostalgia goggles people have on for the Power Rangers just astounds me. It was an awful, awful show.

Which is not to say I didn't watch it as a kid, but I also watched Conan the Adventurer, James Bond Jr., Captain Planet, Widget the World Watcher, Full House, Family Matters, and probably a ton of other shitty shows.

Anyway. I had a Sega CD, but I was thankfully spared from playing this shitfest. Although the games I had weren't really any better; they were mostly either other FMV games (like Sewer Shark and Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective) or upgraded ports of Genesis games (like Ecco: The Tides of Time and Sol-Feace). Although actually, the RedBook soundtracks to those games were pretty great.

In fact, you can probably count the number of good, original games on the Sega CD on your fingers. There's Sonic CD, the Lunar games, and, uhm... I don't know, does Willy Beamish count? (I never played that, but I heard it was decent.)

So yeah. I tend to maintain that Sega as a company simply made tons of terrible business decisions, and that their one success with the Genesis was only the purest luck.

This kinda got off-track, so let me just close by saying: Nice joerb.

Power Rangers died for me around the time Turbo came out.
  • When I was 5 I had a crush on Scorpina...... and she was in the green ranger story arc.

just to point out pterodactyls weren't dinosaurs ether so only the triceratops and t rex where.

This review is hilarious. I rewatch it everytime for the joke at 7:46 with Rita sippin on Gin and Juice. I swear if I could make that into my avatar I would.

Damn, I always hated Power Rangers, even as a kid...

Punishment for skipping cutscenes? Man, I'm glad Hideo Kojima didn't see that.

At the end, isn't that the music from the movie Glory at the part where Matthew Broderick gets shot and dies?

The woman who played Rita Repulsa in the original series, Machiko Soga, died a few years ago after a long battle with cancer, may she rest in peace.

Does anybody know what song he used at the end? I know I've heard it before!
  • Having Chuck Norris, Jet Li, Steven Sagal, Triple H, and Bruce Campbell definitely would have made the show a lot more interesting.

You just see Chuck Norris going Rambo on everyone, while Triple H whacks people with a Sledgehammer and Jet Li cuts them to bits with a sword, and ect.

Hey, I kind of liked those timing things in RE4 and Indigo Prophecy. >.<

Ah, hell, I can see why this game would tarnish those anyways.

alpha ritas escaped bring me triple h, randy orton, rey mysterio, john cena, batista and the undertaker.

you could had used that but im not argueing about it im just saying.

i love the bit with mgs but what i think you should say is this: imangine playing mgs2 and your trying to skip the codec sences only for solid snake to come through the screen point a gun at your chin and saying hey listen you listen to what he saids or your dead.
  • mike epic
Funny review, but dude, come on. You make a reference to Dead to Rights. Now THAT'S a shitty game you should review.

The messed up thing about Power Rangers is that, even though I never liked them, watching this still makes me happy and nostalgic. It was back when I hated the same things that everyone else did. Now? Flo Rida? You've lost me.

No Bulk and Skull?! Thats inexcuseable.
  • zachary
Power rangers has 17 seasons and is just an American version of a japanese show.
  • Schmee
Who the hell is she, Frieza?
  • Daguo
I still don't understand why so many people like Power Rangers so much. The first generation was like 90-95% dubbed over the original japanese version. The adaptated story contradicted itself and made no sense.

    Agh! My tiny arms!

Did you buy that at Bookman's? lol
