Christmas Special 2008 Extra – Siren: Blood Curse

As an special bonus to my end-of-year review, I vent a little more on my intense hatred for the original PS2 abomination “Siren,” and how it differs from the far superior episodic PS3 downloadable game, “Siren: Blood Curse.”

    Wow, redesign! Finally!

I really think the menu should be on the left side though.

Wow, I love the redesign, I think the menu on the right side is fine (I’m right-handed) and I love the default size for your videos now, so much better.

Like that the embedded video finally has a full screen option, so I can stop going to your bliptv page when I want to full screen it.

Are there any handheld games you would want to recommend? It seems like most of your gaming is console only.

I know that people want the menu on the left side, but I love the new design. Keep the menu how it is because keeping it on the right will probably have your site stand out a bit more. Keep it up Spoony ^_^

You don’t know how much I agree.

I still enjoyed Siren a bit, but I never got anywhere. I spent most of my time running around the (somewhat pretty, by PS2-era standards) environments and getting hatcheted in the face.
But I agree; how the hell were we supposed to figure some of that crap out?

It’s more obscure than Myst, for Chrissake.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you about the LBP, though it’s definitely not for all people, the most overrated game of the year is without a doubt Grand Theft Auto IV, which didn’t resemble a Grand Theft Auto game at all, and was all in all just a horrible game, especially considering that famous GTA clone Saints Row 2 was better in EVERY way. I was tempted to burn my copy, and it was a rental!

the new designs great. i think it works alot better with the menu on the right, because the vids are such a huge size it means youd have to scroll the screen to the right to watch them.

i would totally munch on alien fish if i was starving. anyone who is starving would i think. the desperation that hunger causes is extreme. I really actually liked that plot line because it was original. i am so fucking sick of the same explanations for zombies in every game and movie and this was different and interesting.

I’m a big fan of Survival Horror games and I heard that Siren fell into that category
I bought it at my local VG store for about 3$
I started playing it and didn’t have A SINGLE CLUE what to do
I did manage to get by the first level (a short one at least) but got killed in the second one in less than 10 seconds
Again, I had NO CLUE what just happened. I didn’t look for answer on the internet and the instruction booklet was missing so I literally gave up on this game (went back to playing good ol’ Silent hill games)
But then again, thanks for telling me the ending… I mean WTH???? Alien Fish?? That’s TOTALLY retarded!

While Siren had it’s glaring flaws, I can safely say that it is the most satisfying game to complete. It’s true that some levels take hours to complete after multiple trial and error, and the level/menu select makes no sense, but Siren presents a challenge untouchable by any other game I’ve ever played. I have beaten it without a walkthrough, and it took me several years of playing on and off, but no sense of satisfaction from a game lives up to the “Mission Accomplished.” screen you receive after completing a difficult level on Siren.

Your review convinced me to download Siren: Blood Curse. I started playing yesterday and I must say this game is pretty good so far.

The lack of continuity is the only annoying thing about the game. You end a chapter with one character using a revolver, but the next time you get to control him, he has no weapon. Or restarting from a checkpoint without any of the items you had collected.

I loved this review SpoonyOne, but one of your main problems with the Siren series seems to be more of a misunderstanding due to the original game’s somewhat sloppy translation.

To clarify, the creature which the people of Hanuda eat is not a crashed alien (though I can see how one could take this from seeing the ‘true ending’ of the first game), but a fallen God resembling a mermaid (the original interpretation of mermaids were indeed fallen angels or Gods). By eating this God, it lets out the siren wail and this leads me on to my second clarification. The shibito were not created by some kind of pathogen from the flesh of the creature, but were the result of the fallen God, named Datatsushi, placing a blood curse on the mortals that it felt committed blasphemy by eating it; the distinctive ‘siren’ in all the games is said ‘blood curse’ being repeated because if Datatsushi is not appeased with the occasional human sacrifice, the curse begins anew. That is why only religious artifacts can harm the shibito and that is why people who were not born in Hanuda (such as the American film crew in Siren: Blood Curse) rise as Shibito after dying because they interrupt the necessary sacrifice and so have heard Datatsushi’s siren call.

While I understand this is a severly f***ed up theology that we’re dealt by the game developers, I think this explanation might allow you perhaps to enjoy the game a little more without the overall plot seeming too jarring.

Old video, way past the point of anyone actually caring about a new comment, but I am bored so I decided to do so anyway.

I think naming the people “shibito” is incredibly lazy. It just means “the dead”. Just a fancy way of calling them zombies really.

Also, about your complaint about the new games localization. As I'm sure you've found out by now, the game uses English dialogue in the Japanese version. So, its not so much that it was localized poorly, just that the script was never written well in the first place.

I just bought Siren because I do enjoy playing it, if only to get to hear that maniacal giggling.
Right now though…..I am trying to refrain from a walkthrough…but even that does not help.
But I thank you Spoony for warning me of the bad things!
