Noah, fantastic job! Giving the MST3K treatment to an FMV game was pure genius! And doing it for five freaking hours (on our end, I imagine it had to take you quite a bit longer on your side of the interweb) unbelievably awesome! Further exclamatory statement!

I’m sorry you actually had to play Phantazmagoria in order to create such an hilarious walk through. While it did seem a little slow at times, your commentary helped fill the gaps. you’re little ending was hilarious, though i hope i never see Benzaie like that again as long as i live. speaking of endings i loved your little homage to Clue to show us the different endings. That was the single funniest ending i’ve EVER seen in a video. I say that alot when it comes to these kinds of videos, but I really mean it here. I was literally crying my eyes out because I was laughing so damn hard. Bravo Spoony, bravo! I hope you do more stuff like that in future videos because that was COMEDY GOLD!!! Benzaie dancing has scarred me for life and I couldn’t stop laughing.

Compared to the original game, Puzzle of Flesh seemed pretty tame. I mean, you never really got to see anything too graphic when it came to the murders. I remember getting my face cut in half in the original by crazy don. That was brutal to watch. It’s safe to say that the ending was worse than Fallout 3 AND The Thing PC game combined.

I’m REALLY surprised that Spoony is going back to Final Fantasy VIII. I thought that review was over. I was disappointed that he didn’t finish it, but I wasn’t too broken up about it seeing as how i’ve suffered through the game about 3 times. I hope the new videos are just as funny as this one was.

Wow, I had to wait an hour and a half for that thing to download, but it was WORTH IT.

I played this game back in 1999. It was my fourth adventure game – my first ones being Gabriel Knight 1, 2 and Phantasmagoria 1 (which I never beat). I got all of ‘em in sets back then, almost for free.

Man, this brings back memories.

I felt like the quality and jokes vained but its not an easy job to be funny all the time for so many hours. You have done something not many could ever get as close to achieving. Amazing ending and an amazing “review”!
I had to burst out in laughter when you were telekinetically beaten by the computer, also that Batman call and doctor phil (never heared someone else do him as good). Hopefully you can continue with other FMV adventure games :P!

wow, This was an absolutely brilliant ending to a great series! I was honestly laughing most of the way through, especially the parts after the game was over XD Though the mirror part was… disturbing somewhat hehe.

Surprised to see that more FF VIII may be on the horizon. I shall eagerly await whatever comes next, be it more of FF VIII or something else entirely. I am sure it will be absolutely brilliant :)

Truly amazing! I spent New Year’s Eve night just watching the entire series of this Let’s Play. It sure beats my lame night out last New Year.

Also as a footnote, Warren Burton the guy who played Paul Warner, voiced Samos The Sage from the Jak games. So thanks to this Let’s Play, I’ll never be able to play a Jak game and run into Samos without thinking ‘I heard that Curtis!’.

I was really happy when I saw the ending, since I’ve been looking forward to THAT surprise for a long time, like everyone else.
Bracing for some great laughs.
And few words of advice: I think it would be better if you chopped the Phantasmagoria videos into 30 minute segments because then each piece would take less time to load, which would make it easier to find the best parts in the review (and then there would be more videos for people to watch, which would bring more money to you from the advertisements in the videos). I think that would also be good for long reviews coming in the future.

Hey, been a fan for a while and i’ve loved all your videos but dude… this is probably the best online video i’ve ever watched.

I really was ready for disappointment, i’m used to watching things going down hill. I feel that since since i’ve grown older that alot of things just dont live up to my expectations anymore, i’ve been let down loads with hype. Noah how did you play these old games on your PC? I tried installing the first phantasmagoria but i keep getting error messages. I even looked online for windows 95 emulators and couldnt understand any of it. Are you using an emulator to play phantasmagoria 2?

I thought it was over, I thought you were going to make a few closing comments before you shut off the camera. Then I saw the thing I was completely unprepared for. An almost perfect hilarious parody of the thing I had watched 5 hours of. That was awesome, I started cracking up as soon as the decision screen came up. Though I was expecting another one of those before it went into the final fantasy 8 thing, where you would have to click on the broken mirror, to illustrate how obvious some of the puzzles were by (heavily) emphasizing the thing you needed to click on.

Thank you so much for giving Phantasmagoria II exactly what it deserved. I hope Lorelei Shannon is somewhere watching this, and maybe thinking about going back to scriptwriting school or something. I remember the heady days of reading InterAction magazine where her gothy little bonnet was practically overflowing with self-praise at how she was going to scare our pants off, and how Sierra Studios had all the magnificent visual technology to rival Industrial Light & Magic, and blah blah blah. Bollocks to that.

I read on a Phantas fansite that the original script for Phantas II was about twice as big as what got shot. Makes you think. Although not for long, because you just can’t plug up a bad story like Phantas by adding more to it.

Still, what a guilty pleasure this game is. I’m actually a little sad you’re doing Final Fantasy next (of all things?), because there are still so many really terrible FMV games out there that need the attention of someone like you. The top prime candidates I can think of are the Take 2 FMV-games “Ripper” and “Black Dahlia”, because they’re pretty much like Phantas II, in that there are very few actual adventure-game puzzles to solve, and TONS of FMV to riff on.

Lesser good candidates would include:
“Harvester” (perhaps too obvious a choice)
“X-Files” (you already did a review, and would probably only appeal to X-Files fans)
“Gabriel Knight II” (which, despite the cheesy German and piss-poor blue-screen work was actually a decent game)
and any of the Tex Murphy games (because when something finally *does* rise above the cess-pool of filth that is FMV-games, it’s just hard to fuck with it).

I *WOULD* however *LOVE* to see what you could do with Trilobyte’s “The 11th Hour”. Not the actual game itself, mind you, but the 60 minute movie you get to watch in its entirety once you beat the game. There are savegames out there that let you skip the abysmal game itself and just revel in the joys of C-movie acting, gratuitous boob-shots and an old Victorian house that a) manages to look entirely UNLIKE the mansion in The 7th Guest, even though it’s supposed to be the same house, and b) rapes people. Yes. I can’t make this shit up.

Anyway. By and large, Phantas II was an inspired choice. From a fellow FMV-game enthusiast, who also has a hard time explaining just why he puts himself through such filth to other people, I applaud your efforts. Go man, go.

(Also, the “McFLY!” gag made me laugh so hard I had to rewind. Brilliant timing.)

Believe it or not, but there was also… a french and german version of this game….
AND I HAD IT! (the french version, atleast).
Fun fact is, I liked it, back at the time , but that was because I had no comparison (and also, the sex/gory scene, I was close to be forbid to play because of that.)
Too bad he didn’t talk of the easters eggs.It appears that if this game was so short, it was because it couldn’t cary more in 5 CD, yet, they added LOTS of easter eggs in that game…You only get to see the “batman” and “my ass” (the first time, she say it only if you lay your house on her ass) in spoony’s video, but here some others:
-If you let your mouse on a mask in Curtis’s house, and type “BURP” then the screen will “shake” and you’ll hear someone belch.
-You can log on Trevor’s account (with the password “bellybutton”
-Another one:In chapter three, if you press shift, you can then click on the “locked” door in curtis’s bedroom,and you will hear homer simpson say something.
-Not finished yet?Here’s the worst: on the screen where curtis is facing blob’s cage, if you click on the tip of his nose, he will (badly) picks his nose!Then, if you repeat the process 4 times, specifically in chapter three,he will literally FART THE GAME DIRECTOR’S HEAD OUT OF HIS ASS!

Of course I hadn’t find that back in 1997, but I redownloaded the game, just 2 month before spoony started to review it(it works on xp….providing you use it with a software so the video works)but I found this fansite (click on my name) where someone listed them.Check it out, there is even an “easter egg summary screen”!

It did have a few moments where i felt like shouting (first encounter with the keycard/door) but i think i can forgive you that for actually willingly participating in this. It must of been a real shitty ride unless you find your own jokes exceedingly funny.

Wow! I could sit through 5 hours of a game review but I still can’t make it through a LOTR movie ^^; Unfortunately I never even heard of this series and now I am thinking of trying the original since it’s obviously superior. The horror pc game that I played as a kid however was Inherent Evil: Chapter 1 The Hotel which was kind of weird… I mean I never saw chapter 2. From what I remember as a kid is that this game scared the crap out of me! Yet I kept playing at it. I also remember it being unlikely to beat. I never beat it. My stepdad also had the game and I believe he got farther then I did but I don’t think he beat it ever. It would be awesome to see a game review of it! It’s a lot more wild than this game. I just wanna hear someone professionally discuss it.

Can anyone provide some kind of translation for what the alien is saying to Curtis when he’s revealing who he is and giving the whole backstory and everything? No matter how loud I turn up the volume, I just *cannot* understand what he is saying! I hilariously watched all these and I’m DYING to find out who or what the Hecatomb is and Curtis’s past. All I got was that Curtis was sent into the portal when he was young, and that’s about it.

There must be something wrong with your audio. It’s speaking English, and everything is revealed. The Hecatomb is a projected image of the real Curtis Craig, who never left Dimension X after Paul Warner thew him into the portal. Apparently, going to another dimension gives you psychic powers. His actual physical form is that guy covered in crap towards the end. Anyway, the alien beings (funny we never actually see these guys) created a replica of Curtis for some reason and sent that back instead. It seems the real Curtis wasn’t too happy about this and during the events of the game is trying to drive replica Curtis insane and take over his body… or something like that. That’s everything in a nutshell I guess. I don’t know why his mother tried to kill him. I guess she sensed it wasn’t her son or some bullshit.

First of all, I love this site and I have been making my way through it since I found it. I have watched every single game rant/review that you have posted. This includes the 5 hour Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of the Flesh. I loved it a lot, but may I submit one suggestion: you should have some sort of badge of honor in the form of a picture that states something to the effect of “I watched all 5 hours of Phantasmagoria 2…..Bow down to me!!” This is merely an example of what it could say. I sat through this marathon of an LP in all of about 7 hours. (Yeah, I took a few breaks) MOST. EPIC. LP. EVAR. Seriously. I wish destroying objects with a hammer was this entertaining, (And I do enjoy destroying shit.)

The ending…just pure GENIUS. So much genius, I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if Dr. Insano was involved.

The game should have been called: Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Why There Weren’t Very Many Puzzles. You’re right, the only puzzles were the star gate thing and the circle puzzle to the masochist’s wet dream door. And possibly the one where you actually had to RIGHT-CLICK. WTF. How did this get past testing?

“Oh right, this game wasn’t tested.”

The fact that you referenced Office Space at least 4 times in the game kicks 10 shades of ass all by itself.

I was watching this on you tube originally and have found it to be freakin awesome! I was going to play the game again as i have not played it in over 10 years and dont really remember much but i found this to be so much better than playing the game. Due to you tube dropping clips off i have not been able to watch episode 20, 23, and 24. Unfortunatly when i tried to watch the full hour long videos on the web page i found that where video 4 ends and video 5 starts there is a huge gap. I dont know if this is a glitch with my system or not but ill try and watch video 4 again (with my slow internet connection). My ultimate solve to this would be…..

Aside from Part I, I watched all of this in a marathon. Damn, man! You are tied with only one man in the world of Let’s Plays and riffs! I SO hope to see more! Maybe, if it would not be much of a nuisance, you can also show off “Under a Killing Moon” after Ripper. Though…the constant swapping between 8 discs might be a little much…

Also, I have heard a lot about your Final Fantasy VIII review…I haven’t played the game yet, but I have hopes it is good. Of course, with SEVERAL Final Fantasy titles, it ALL depends on the person. Some hate VII, some hate X, some hate XII, some hate V…it’s just all over the place. Heck, I’m sure someone out there hates IX. But, no matter what my personal view on FF8 be, I’m sure your 11-part review will be quite entertaining.

I’ll be back to marathon that after I’ve played and beaten the game myself, as I am sure spoilers await.

Have I also mentioned you need to do MORE of these? Oh, my god, this was HILARIOUS! Five stars, A+, 100%, 10 out of 10! I would be as humble as a homeless man if I could have even a fraction of the talent you have with this stuff!

I should probably warn anyone who hasn’t seen the vid yet that this comment contains spoilers.

Y’know, I really appreciate it when redshirts survive, especially in a horror game/book/movie. But are you telling me that out of all the ones who could’ve survived, it was the shallow female love interest, Miss Sure-We-Can-Have-an-Open-Relationship-Until-I-Find-Out-You’ve-Been-Sleeping-With-Someone-Else? (That scene of her getting jealous when she finds Therese’s markings on Curtis’ chest was painfully cliché.) I mean, I didn’t particularly care much for Therese, but at least she had a distinct personality.

*sniff* Farewell, Trevor. You truly were a good character in your own right, which is more than anyone else in this game can say for themselves. (You also kinda remind me of one of my best friends, and your interactions with Curtis kind of remind me of our relationship—dammit, there’s just no way to say that without including a shit-ton of unwarranted innuendo.)

How ridiculous was that ending though? You have the big confrontation with Paul Warner (“I heard that Curtis”) and the Hetacomb in Room 314, then Curtis wandering aimlessly in Alien Intestine Space, then a second confrontation with the Hetacomb and Other-Curtis, then more wandering aimlessly in Intestine Space for a while. Where was the effing climax?

Despite the wretched execution, this game actually had a promising plot to begin with. I was genuinely curious to find out what was going on and how it would all turn out. Unfortunately, as with many mysteries, the answers it gave were not nearly as exciting as the questions it raised.

And those ending choices were so incredibly cliché. Either Curtis goes back to Intestine Space or he stays on Earth with his one-dimensional girlfriend and all is well—except that Curtis is still experiencing EvilPangs, dun dun dun dun. Maybe it’s not over yet, after all. Puh-leeze, I’m not even slightly a horror genre buff and even I have seen that like a million times before.

That police investigation subplot also went nowhere. Chekhov’s gun must’ve been packing a blank with that one.

I know it was sappy and incredibly stupid, but I found the scene where Young Curtis makes up with deranged mommy kinda sweet.

(All right, it isn’t the length that’s the problem, it’s something I wrote in this section of the post. Again, it’d be helpful to have some idea what that is.)

I feel a number of the jokes were rather weak, an found many of your references incomprehensible, on top of the risible epilogues and numerous anti-climaxes.

… All of which pales into invisibility in light of the awesomeness of this review. When you’re at your best, Noah (in other words: most of the time), you leave me gasping for breath.

With one or two exceptions, your voices are fantastic, and just when I think you’ve exhausted your supply of new ones, you break out the Scotty imitation. (I hope you do that voice in other reviews, I haven’t heard nearly enough of it yet.)

The parody at the end with you in the t-shirt and glasses, imitating the waiting-for-the-player-to-click screen and the punched-by-the-computer effect and the phone calls and everything … comic gold.

And you used my very favorite line (just the way you deliver it is so hilariously funny) at the very end of the review. I was afraid we’d seen the end of that joke. True, it wasn’t as funny lacking the proper set-up, but it was still the best way to cap the whole thing off.

THIS GAME IS AMAZING, at the beggining it have such a nostalgic/depressive feeling, It makes you feel like experiencing the real life of a ordinary normal guy, I can’t be sure wheres the great magic of the game, but can asume that the depressive music really helps you feel in the character. I have watched the entire review in 4 days, and I have dreamed of it in the first 3 days, and I can say, that was like disturbing nightmares. At this point I can say that this game is a really DEEP EXPERIENCE. Its like watching a very long movie, and the end, ok that really sucks. I would say that the reach it climax at the mother fucker “Bob” death, afther that the magic fade out. I really enjoyed this review, probably your best game review done. Congratulations.

I watched your Knightmare vid on Youtube and loved it (Even watched it a second time a week later), then found this on Youtube and … like several, indeed lots of, people replying here, I watched the entire thing over the course of two evenings – and it was absolutely fucking hilarious. Thank so you much for the laughs and the amazing effort you put into it. The absurd references, your reactions, your gay Trevor voice… everything.

Anyway, I’ve always been a wuss with horror stuff like in Phantasmagoria, I’d never have lasted long playing it as a kid (I think it’s the tension – which the music did a good job of in this game until the volume slider became possessed), but it’s been a hell of an experience to see it play out – I can’t believe how lame the gore and scary stuff in it actually is. The whole game was classic Sierra puzzles and dialog put into an actual (interactive) movie, with hilarious results. This is yet another fucked up adventure game I’ve seen which always turns crazy – check out the Darkseed and Cthulu game play throughs at the Let’s Play site: http://www.letsplayarchive.com/

In commemeration of the awesomeness of this LP, I have put together a little Top 5 list. So, without further ado, Top 5 Likable characters in Phantasmagoria 2 – A Puzzle Of Flesh. Why 5? 5 WAS HARD ENOUGH.

#5. Patricia – Bumped up from Honorable Mention because a character who’s never shown on screen definately deserves a spot on this list. Even though having to hear her over the phone puts her in the game and knocks some points off, the fact that you don’t have to watch her act is enough to push her up on the likability scale.
#4. Tom – If you’ve ever worked under more than one supervisor, you’ve met Tom. He’s the supervisor who is business forward, but flips of your manager behind his back alongside you. And who wouldn’t find that at least a little likable? But, isn’t almost laughable adherance to company policy annoying? Yeah, a little. But when you remember he’s just another working stiff like the rest of us, you can’t begrudge him the number 4 spot. Unless he really was writing Tifa Porn. If so, he’s #5 and Patricia’s #4.
#3. Borderline Staff and Patrons – This can only work if you take them as a whole. From the man who pierced Curtis’ navel, to the woman who informed him Therese was going to destroy him, to Kevin Smith keeping guard at the unbelievably lame puzzle door, this motley crew attempted to release us from the monotony of Curtis’ hum-drum life, even if only momentarily. Any group of characters who step up and actually try to entertain us, deserve a spot on the list. And that spot is #3.
#2. Marianne Craig (Curtis’ Mom) – Once you found out what Curtis was, and realized she wasn’t evil and that he really is a disgusting monster who drove her to insanity, how could you not find the many ways she tried to torment and harm him funny and delightful? Hell, even before that realization, some of you probably wanted her to come back and beat him some more. The one who deserves the number 2 spot is definately her, the true victim in all of this. Well, aside from…
#1. Trevor – Come on, like you didn’t expect this! It’s Gay Spoony! In addition, he’s probably the only character whose death may have saddened you. His anti-humor was intentional and he was the only love interest who had true human depth and the only one you really wanted to see win in the end (no pun intended I swear!). So, even if he didn’t in the game, he certainly wins here. Besides, it’s refreshing to see a gay character who isn’t holding his wrist out and calling people ‘girlfriend’.

Oh, and absolutely fantastic work. I mean it. I loved every second of this. You, sir, are a genius. I cannot convey enough how truly awestruck I am at the mere thought of how much effort and time you put into this. This was my first experience with Spoony and it was incredible. The amount of comedy and satire issued while playing this game was incredible. I had not laughed as hard or as long in awhile and will have to pass it around to my friends. Thanks.

For its day, the game was pretty hi-tech and dealt with themes that were ahead of time for game. This was also when Congress and the press was screaming bloody murder about video games. It had graphic violence and gore, profanity, child abuse, kinky S&M nightclub scene and not just any openly gay co-worker, but this is probably the first time in a game where the hero is, apparently, bisexual. Heck, that would have been unheard of on the home console systems and I cannot thing of two many non-heterosexual characters in games during the 1980s – late 1990s.

I enjoyed graphic adventure games, and the full motion video games were, for good and ill, a part of growing up in an era of PC CD-ROM and the Sega CD. Alas, the last great graphic adventure game I played was the first Longest Journey. Many of the classis are hard to run on modern computers. Sierra was the leader in graphic adventure games for its day, but they tended to go make games that lots of incredibly hard (even to the point of insanity) puzzels or games that had very few puzzels that we a bit too easy except for the same that it was all guess-work, point n’ click trial and error.

I do recall seeing a interview online about the two games. I take it the second one was not a commercial success because their was never a part 3 and Sierra did not make too many graphic adventure games after that.
I never beat the game. So…apparently, the major character was not only bisexual (with a screwed up childhood) but a clone from another odd galaxy where the real Curtis had been imprisoned and abused until finally creating some sort of pychic monster to go after the player (cloned Curtis). Hmm.

What chemicals were the aliens unsuccessfully messing with? Why dont we see any of the aliens? Were they all on a coffee break or does those little bug creatures run the show? Will he learn to control his alien identity? Will he find happiness in a blond that treated him like dirt or in another man?

We may never know.

I’m very disappointed, Spoony. The scene with all the ducts demanded a Brazil reference.

Anyway, I was actually surprised that they used Dimension X Portal / Evil Projecting Twin as the explanation for the whole mess.

A “Re: Your Brains” joke would have fit perfectly when the zombies were attacking, especially considering two of them were named Tom and Bob.

I love how you used the transition scenes from Clue between the different endings. As well as the version of “Shake, Rattle and Roll” that rolls over Clue’s end credits. Great touch.

That was awesome, Spoony. Now I got to see the game without having to play it and with hilarious commentary to boot. I laughed, a lot! I have been wondering for years where the scene of Curtis in that crazy pink, fleshy get-up fit into the game (cause that is the only thing I saw on my brief time on set in ’96.) Anyways, totally lame game, but I have to say I think the game had overall great ideas that just got executed badly. It’s too bad, because Sierra On-line (as it was called then) rocked with the first Phantasmagoria. Now I know the mystery of the big, pink, fleshy, Curtis suit and I can die happy. Thanks Spoony! 

Godamn that’s a fun LP.  Second time watching through. Therese’s safe word gets me EVERY TIME.

Anyone else here think that Spoony’s singing sounded as good as Trent Reznor’s? :P

An excellent LP all around, Noah. Despite the fact it was meandering and clunky I rather liked this game’s story. With a few tweaks it could’ve been pretty decent. Not great by any means but certainly better. I feel it would’ve made a better feature film than a game, though, actually.

I love how Evil!Curtis just bitchslapped Warner aside like nothing. “Bitch, *I’M* the main villain in this game!”

Could anyone tell me what the music is for the alternate ending screens?

The sad thing? This may be a terrible game with a terribly paced plot, and yet their characterisation of a gay character is better, less stereotypical (and more existent) than most TV shows today.

I like how Spoony edited all the smaller videos into hour sections….

Jesus, that plot….it follows all the 1990s cliches about evil corporations, Stephen King-like hallucinations, clueless cops, an “X-files”-like vibe because that was the biggest sci-fi show on the air, and so on.

At least some of these people can get a SAG card for their trouble, I guess.

Watching this again made me realize something:

No offense to any reviewer, but this is the single damn best play-through on the internet. Yes, better than freeman’s mind. Even better than the ripper play-through.

I have watched this so many times and only now did I get the Harold and Bob reference. I can only assume I wasn’t paying full attention the other times and thought you were talking about Bob the asshole coworker and not Herbert.

Holy crap! I just realized that the guy playing Warner is the same guy who did the voice work for Samos the Sage in the Jak games. I knew that voice sounded familiar.
