The Spoony Experiment

Let’s Play Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh (Hour 5)

by Spoony on December 30, 2008 · View Comments

The epic conclusion to this Puzzle of Flesh is an orgy of slime, lightning, mucus, and alien weirdness in Dimension X. Who survives? Who dies? Will Curtis prevail, or will Paul Warner’s new weight loss drug usher in a new golden age of pharmaceuticals?

More importantly, will Spoony survive with his sanity intact?

All signs point to “no.”

EDIT: As a convenience to everyone who’s been following the review in bits and pieces up to now, here’s a link to the “Part 27″ finale, instead of having to slog through half of Hour 5 to get to the new content.

Oh geez I'm not gonna be able to watch this anymore. How about you get over your homophobia and sexist comments before trying to be funny ? Because in this state, you're such a huge disappointment. You have no idea how much of a turn off your (obvious) personality is. This has been a huge waste of time, what a huge pile of bollocks, especially in this age/century.
  • Lowcifur
Wha? After how many hours (out of five) did you decide that this was a huge waste of time? I mean, I'm sure you were watching, pen and paper at the ready, hoping for some legitimate Phantasmagoria walkthrough tips. Instead, you were forced to watch hour after hour of...ugh...comedy.

I agree, though, about his obvious personality (whatever the hell that means)...the first thing I think whenever I see Burton is that he's a sexist homophobe (he has a fear of Homo Sapiens). Luckily, Spoony keeps him in check.

...and what exactly is your comment supposed to mean ? You don't have to try so hard to sound smart and my comment isn't really the place to do that if you're desperate about proving something.

The fact that I commented on the fifth part doesn't mean I sat and watched all of it; that's one bad job of being a smartass, buddy.

It's quite clear what I mean about the personality issue and by the way, what is it that you're trying to prove again ? That it's all some "comedy" and that it shouldn't be taken seriously even when every other joke stinks of homophobia/sexism ? Or...what ?
I don't think there's anything funny about violance, be it verbal or physical. If you don't know how to be funny without bashing a community, it's not my comment you should be worried about.
And please, do let me know when you get over your pointless sarcasm.
  • Lowcifur
First off, I'll never be over my pointless sarcasm. It's a part of my culture, and I'd thank you not to defame it, sirrah. Buuuuut, I guess I can be civil since I don't really like being a total douche (as good at it as I may be).

I really don't see what parts you're specifically complaining about, but to each his own. I think you may have enjoyed the series more if you started from the beginning, that way the jokes wouldn't have seemed like such non sequiturs.

I had an inner Megadeth fanboy squeal when evil-Noah picked up the phone and said "Hello me, it's me again!"
  • dragonkiller48
    LMAO so did I.
  • Rumuwi
    Nice fallout reference XD
  • seepo1456
if only you made your own FMV game. :p
  • Oh god, I watched it all...well, thank you for one of the greatest evenings I ever had!
  • Malaloba
I can't believe that I've seen all five hours....I really have no life....And think that I've learned things that I never EVER wanted to and am emotionally scarred for life.

But you know what? I think it was worth it just for your commentary. And that ending.

I just watched ALL 5 HOURS back-to-back, and while it's an awesome Let's Play by Spoony...

    You know what?

... I think the story of this game is actually not that bad.

And besides the annoying cop, this game seems to have a pretty good production value, as far as FMV games go.
  • ryan
my god...brilliant. it was completely worth all 5 hours to see your rendition and having the "MCFLY!" pop out of the mirror. well done sir *golf clap*
  • Eniac
So, what about a "Let's Play Phantasmagoria"? The first one! I heard it's way better. :)

There's no way i could write all the fun i've had watching your videos, so... 10/10. ^^

24:12 Oh MY God ITS MICHEAL JACKSON X!!! BRED IN DIMENSION X, AND STILL ALIVE! CONTINUED TO GET PLASTIC SURGERY TILL HE LOOKS THE WAY HE DOES NOW!!!
  • Garth's Brownie Girl
Hey Noah! (Sorry if you don't like being called by your name, I just like going by names better than nicknames or account names) Anyway, I watched all of these, and all that I didn't like was in the last one where you kept hitting yourself... Even if it was faking.. I dunno, maybe I'm just weird that way, but I don't like people hurting themselves. But this was a fun way to spend my night. (It's now 5:30 in the morning) And if you're thinking what I'm thinking you're thinking, I didn't mean it like that. Anyway, I haven't watched too much of your stuff, but of what I've seen, you're a really cool guy. Keep up the good work. :)
  • Pondenome
Good one! Totally worth the time, obviously.
  • YumItsTasty
Did anyone else notice that Curtis' appartment has no kitchen and no bathroom !?
I'm all for this "lead a spartan life" thing, but maybe thats a bit exaggerated ;)

Loved the videos spoony, great work !
  • Rainy29
Wow... 5 hours of crap to get 10 minutes of awesome. Totally worth it! Great stuff Spoony.
  • nietzschesucks
I'm very disappointed, Spoony. The scene with all the ducts demanded a Brazil reference.
  • This was my first experience with Spoony and it was incredible. The amount of comedy and satire issued while playing this game was incredible. I had not laughed as hard or as long in awhile and will have to pass it around to my friends. Thanks.

For its day, the game was pretty hi-tech and dealt with themes that were ahead of time for game. This was also when Congress and the press was screaming bloody murder about video games. It had graphic violence and gore, profanity, child abuse, kinky S&M nightclub scene and not just any openly gay co-worker, but this is probably the first time in a game where the hero is, apparently, bisexual. Heck, that would have been unheard of on the home console systems and I cannot thing of two many non-heterosexual characters in games during the 1980s - late 1990s.

I enjoyed graphic adventure games, and the full motion video games were, for good and ill, a part of growing up in an era of PC CD-ROM and the Sega CD. Alas, the last great graphic adventure game I played was the first Longest Journey. Many of the classis are hard to run on modern computers. Sierra was the leader in graphic adventure games for its day, but they tended to go make games that lots of incredibly hard (even to the point of insanity) puzzels or games that had very few puzzels that we a bit too easy except for the same that it was all guess-work, point n' click trial and error.

I do recall seeing a interview online about the two games. I take it the second one was not a commercial success because their was never a part 3 and Sierra did not make too many graphic adventure games after that.
I never beat the game. So...apparently, the major character was not only bisexual (with a screwed up childhood) but a clone from another odd galaxy where the real Curtis had been imprisoned and abused until finally creating some sort of pychic monster to go after the player (cloned Curtis). Hmm.

What chemicals were the aliens unsuccessfully messing with? Why dont we see any of the aliens? Were they all on a coffee break or does those little bug creatures run the show? Will he learn to control his alien identity? Will he find happiness in a blond that treated him like dirt or in another man?

    We may never know.
  • I watched all of Hour 1, and the beginning and end of Hour 5 - great job. Found it searching for video on the first Phantasmagoria on YouTube and found this gold. Thought you may want to know, in exchange for my entertainment

208 it a Linkin Park "Crawling" refrence not NiN. Oh, and you know that can't smell good.
  • Drew Lung
Great job, Spoony. This game looks thoroughly unfun to play. Kudos on making this entertaining. The ending was genius! Its almost frightening how well it copies the game perfectly. Was the first game any better than this? If so, would you do a Let's Play of Phantasmagoria 1?
  • Johannesfromsweden

Nine Inch Nails and 2001: A Space Odyssey, you can't go wrong on that one!

Speaking of NIN, I remembered about the Year Zero ARG and thought "Reviewing an ARG would be something kinda interessting..."

    just a thought ^^

I loooove that the actress playing Jocilyn probably has the most lasting success of the entire cast, working in softcore porn (seriously, check out her credits on IMDB.) I guess after this POS she had nowhere to go but up (and down, and up, and...slap...my apologies...)

So, in the end, Curtis is not a human being and is actually a shapeshifting clone whose amnesia is simply a result of his not being the actual Curtis?

    Holy shit. He's Alex Mercer!!!
