My Name is Bruce Review (2-25-09)

Because of an upcoming dentist appointment, I’m recording a spur-of-the-moment review of my latest movie rental, Bruce Campbell’s “My Name is Bruce.”

Sorry for the change in location and the focusing issues; I recorded this very late at night on a different camera and it had a finicky auto-focus.

sure are pumping these vlogs out, which is awesome. A shame that the movie is a pile of shit, though.

I was about to go with “ok”, but the movie seriously needed a kickass second half. The “fight” at the end was pathetic. Needed much more chainsaw and just…fighting. Not Bruce running around being chased by the demon.

I actually sorta liked this. It’s not exactly JCVD or anything, but it works alright as a completely separate comedy if you can watch it without constantly thinking that it’s Bruce Campbell. Naturally it’s hard for the big fans, but atleast for me (I’ve only really seen the EDs and Bubba) it worked as a nice little comedy to watch on a sunday when you’re bored.

You need to start watching Burn Notice. Bruce is great in that, and the show’s great as well.

You read my mind HBMC. He’s playing one of the big highlight characters in USA’s Burn Notice. I’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t think that show is great.

I was initially skeptical of tacking a character actor like Bruce in what looked like a really great serious show concept, but he’s pitch perfect in it. Jeffrey Donovan, Bruce Campbell, and Gabrielle Anwar play off each other so well. And who doesn’t like watching a spy action show?

If you want something to cleanse your pallet of this crap movie and remember why exactly you love Bruce, pick up the first season of Burn Notice. I guarantee you’ll be hooked.

I just recently found Burn Notice too. I liked it so much that I watched every episode in just a few days. It is far from a perfect show, but it is just plain cool, similar to how Tombstone is as a movie.

I am a quasi Bruce Campbell fan myself, and it is great to see him in such an entertaining new series, even if he isn’t the leading man. He is still in every episode, as far as I can recall. I was a little hesitant about Jeffrey Donovan (the lead actor) at first, but he has really grown on me and I quite enjoy his work now. He, or at least his character, has a cool, often smarmy air about him that reminds me a lot of several of the characters Kevin Spacey has played over the years (Lester Burnham, Verbal Kint).

Anyway, nice review, although it is a bit sad to hear that this Bruce movie isn’t very good. Also, I happen to like Army of Darkness!

OMG Burn Notice is the gr8test show ever!

I’m glad other people watch it because I don’t know ANYone else who does, and it’s because it airs on USA, the same assholes who brought you Monk and Psych.

On the upside though, the dvd sales aren’t so great so I think I’ll get it for $20 now.

Haven’t seen the entire movie, but from the parts that I saw, it didn’t seem very good. Nevertheless, Bruce Campbell himself was in attendance when the film premiered at our theater in his hometown of Royal Oak, Michigan. He did Q and A’s with the audience after the movie, which were pretty funny, but when not entertaining fans, Bruce mostly kept to himself, contrary to his previous appearances where (so I’ve heard) he would come out and mooch popcorn and chat with the staff. So that was kind of a bummer, but it was cool to see him in person, anyway.

I watched the movie with no expectations, and was bored throughout the whole thing. The only part I laughed was when the guy painting the sign had his encounter with quandi.
The humor was just unoriginal and plainly lame. The kills were plain. The acting was typical. Nothing stood out.

I like your reviews, Spoony, even when it’s just you talking in front of the camera. Your short review was more entertaining than the whole movie.

After seeing the trailer, I knew not to expect too much of this movie. In a way, it softened the blow disappointment for me, when I finally saw the full lenght feature. If only the script had been better and Sam Raimi had been there to direct, this could’ve been an instant classic. Yeah… if only…

This is why I don’t watch too many movies, too much garbage.
I find it hard to believe they are making a sequel.
Also, if a movie is made on about $1.5 million dollars, NEVER a good sign
Seriously the Lost Pilot cost like $10 million dollars back in 2004 or something

‘Army of Darkness’ was great, but perhaps you’re just suggesting that that particular persona of Campbell should have ended with Ash J. Williams’ return to the modern world. I can see where it might have been taken too far. I have not seen any of Campbell’s movies other than ‘Evil Dead’, ‘Army of Darkness’ (am yet to get a hold of a copy of ED2), and ‘Bubba Ho-Tep’. I’ll admit that “Bubba” was lacking in action and the comedy was thinly spread, but it was still a good movie and made good use of Bruce. He wasn’t “winking to the camera” and made a new character out of the aged and embittered Elvis Presley. I’m sure you’ve seen it, but I’d like to hear your two cents whether you liked it or not. I remember trying to watch “The Man with the Screaming Brain” when it premiered on Sci-Fi a few years back and I just couldn’t stand the long, boring first couple of scenes.

I actually love Army of Darkness. But, I get what you mean. I think it’s somewhat sad that movies are spreading to all kinds of audiences nowadays, to a point where we don’t really get to choose what we like about the movie. I’ve seen your review of Fanboys, and I think it’s weird that there are these types of movies, designed specifically to the nerd audience. It always gets me thinking of a souless room of writers thinking what will be the catchphrases nerds will be spouting to themselves after the movie.

I mean, what are the new classics? I’m not actually old enough to have watched Star Wars on the big screen, but, still, I think, are there any movies that can compare to it today? That are as original? Everything today is planned out with research groups, test audiences and viral marketing. Even independent movies look “fake” – as if they were written hoping to achieve this cult status.

I’m surprised more people aren’t bringing up the Three Amigos comparison. It was honestly the only thing I could think of even back when this was first announced as in-production. Not sure if I’d complain about it though, there’s far worse movies to lift a premise from.

Anyway though, it really does deserve pointing out to anyone who actually has the movie in question handy, the special features are honestly a longer, funnier take on the same basic premise of humor at Bruce Campbell’s expense. Particularly the Making Of feature, which is really all just about hammering in the fact that yes, much as appearances would suggest, this is indeed the result of a couple people handing Bruce a hastily written script and seeing if they could get a movie made without going out and getting a set, or hiring actors, or generally spending money on anything if it could be avoided. Still would have been nice though if they didn’t just completely run out of momentum after the whole “what, it’s a real monster? RUN!” scene.

Then of course, on the other hand, you can’t say the movie didn’t succeed in what it set out to do. We’re taking Three Amigos and replacing cheesy westerns with Sci-Fi Original quality monster movies, so if the end result wasn’t just plain sad on quite a few levels, we’d be betraying the premise.

I like this movie. I liked the idea that Bruce could make a film that joked on the fans that only want to see the “bad ass” Ash character running around killing zombies. I especially liked the mini speech on the use of chainsaws.. “When it comes right down to it, they’re just too damn heavy” – Brilliant.

This movie is a joke on what Bruce Campbell fans want Bruce Campbell to be in every movie he’s in. He’s not the bad-ass guy with the boomstick. He’s not the Old Spice guy. He’s not the take charge, lead the army into the face of evil guy. He’s a regular shmo trying to make ends meet and having a miserable time of it.

Spoony you are a smart guy and great critic. I have many strong opinions on movies(especially horror). Like I hate horror movie remakes to the core! I also can’t stand huge Hollywood high budget horror flops. So of course I am a Bruce fan. I saw Evil Dead when I was 6 what great parents huh? Any ways I think you are just taking it too seriously. Yes it wasn’t a great movie and it was over the top cheesy/ridiculous, but that is Bruce. You had to have known when you rented it what you were in for. He was basically just making fun of himself which I think is well over due. You are right though Bruce fans will watch any thing he is in. Have you ever seen ‘Ice Breaker’ where he plays a Swedish terrorist? Wow was that bad, but I still own it for some unknown reason to me uhaha. To rap this up here ‘My Name is Bruce’ was All and all just ok with only a couple good punch lines and an alcoholic dog, it did manage to put a smile on my face, but it is was it is a Bruce Campbell film. So there is really no need to over analyze it .

Clearly sir you haven’t seen “The Man With The Screaming Brain”. Because if you had you would probably think a little more highly of “My Name Is Bruce”….maybe not that much more highly but atleast higher than that piece of shit. To be honest, Bruce Campbell’s movies post the finishing of Army Of Darkness (that he’s starred in) haven’t been all that great. Bubba Ho-Tep was alright but really kinda forgettable. The aformentioned “Screaming Brain” was really just horrible and I honestly couldn’t believe Bruce proudly put his name on that piece of shit. It’s a mess, it’s not funny and it’s really just……need I say more.

I have some hope for “My Name Is Bruce” but if anything thanks partially to this review I’m not going to expect much.

That’s a shame. :/ I was really looking forward to this movie. The trailer made it seem to be like a really clever little thing. I think Bruce is too wrapped up in the “hey guys I’m a B-Movie actor.” He’s a brilliant individual, and a really good actor, and it’s such a shame to see his talent go to waste. Ted Raimi’s been in bigger movies than he has, for God’s sake!

My brother got me Man With the Screaming Brain and Alien Apocalypse for Christmas, and I wasn’t amused by either of them.

I’m not a really big Bruce Campbell fanboy and I thought the beginning was too slow but I ended up laughing my ass off during the last hour of the movie. Yes its self referential but I also thought that was like a big Fuck You to the fanboys in some way. That and being able to make fun of yourself is in my book a good quality. It shows how he’s really not that arrogant and knows how he’s made some shiity movies(although I love Man With The Screaming Brain).
Bruce is a good (comedy) actor and this movie to me feels pretty personal and a way of him celebrating and both making fun of his carreer.
That said I think the time has come for him to come back with a movie totally out of character to show how he can also do serious stuff.

I’ve always been a fan of Bruce since many years.
But, as soon as I finished watching this movie I immediately felt disappointed with it.
Yea he just made himself too much of an asshole and coward bit over the line.
I was expecting him to eventually fall back into his old moviecharacter and go with it throughout the end.
Play with the boomstick and why not the chainsaw as it was featured.
I mean, his biggest fan had made it so nice, I was looking real forward to watching Bruce using it later on… but no.

I pretty much think that… If I didn’t know who Bruce Campbell was before, and seeing him for the first time in this movie.
I actually doubt that I would have any interests in his character and watch other movies starring him.
    Luckily It’s not the case.
My first movie finding his groovy characterism was Evil Dead.

Hail to the true king baby!

I’m a big fan of Bruce, not just Evil Dead, but Brisco, Burn Notice, Bubba Ho Tep, the books, etc … I’ve also seen some of his “bad” movies, not to mention bit part stuff. Even when it isn’t bad, there are times where I’m able to enjoy it solely because of Bruce.

I would hardly call this film a sign of Bruce basically telling the fans that he could shit in a can and his fans would buy it (which they probably would). The special features show that it was something that while it may not have cost a lot of money, a lot of effort was put into.

Generally speaking, Bruce understands his pecking order in the Hollywood spectrum, and basically understands the financial aspect of the business. I would compare it to Kevin Smith. Both will generally do low budget stuff. Ultimately, they both have a limited (but loyal) fanbase. If they keep the budgets low enough, they’ll be able to get a return on the investment and get to keep making movies.

My Name is Bruce didn’t get a big in theatre release and the DVD/Blu Ray sales will probably cover the budget, but really, it’s something that was for the admitedly few people that would enjoy it. It’s a niche product that is targetted at a small audience. It touches on some of the things Bruce touches on in his book. The big one is, he isn’t Ash. Many of his “fans” only know him as Ash, and otherwise don’t care. As far as a Three Amigos remake goes, he fits the part. Ultimately, the story does “redeem” the tongue in cheeck portrait of Bruce by having him help the town in the end. Heck, even Ash was a horrible coward pushed to bad assedness. The “catchphrase spewing” of Army of Darkness started in Evil Dead 2 … once the series decided on slapstick comedy over horror, it also included action movie zingers. And while there are movies that try to have Bruce reprise his role as Ash (many of the bad Sci Fi movies make him a bad ass/jerk ass who fights monsters), he’s done lots of other stuff where it’s completely different (Brisco and Burn Notice are great examples of that). His persona in the movie My Name is Bruce is more an extention of the character he’s often asked to play, but his best work is when he steps outside those roles. Which does mean that My Name is Bruce isn’t his best work, but it’s among the best of his work doing that kind of stuff. And, ultimately, I think it’s meant to end that chapter of his acting career. He’s getting older, and can’t really pull off “action hero” anymore (arguably, he hasn’t been able to do it for a while). This is basically the definitive post-Evil Dead “Bruce as Ash” movie, and even plays out a bit like Army of Darkness in his mistreatment of the town folks, love story, etc … sort of like New Nightmare was a “close” to the Nightmare of Elmstreet series that existed outside of it.

I did laugh pretty hard when Bruce was trying to shoot at Guan De and instead he shoots like 3 of the locals, but it wasn't much. It was average, a little too average for even Bruce Campbell to save it.

  • brassherald

I saw this on netflix and I have to say it has a few moments that I found slightly funny, not enough to actually spend money to rent it, or even get it sent to the house since I saw on the online view. But, I was surprised that no one ever mentions Burn Notice, granted, its a good show and he's a good side character, but, if you are going to talk about Brisco County, why not Burn Notice?

  • themoviebitch

He is still endearing and sweet and humble. I had the chance to meet him in person and he was such a sweetheart. I agree that My Name Is Bruce sucks but Burn Notice and Brisco County are great shows. He's excellent in Burn Notice. I think he might be doing another movie soon, I'm not sure on that. He was awesome in Bubba Ho-Tep though.

  • Kirzan

I never really understood what was the big fuss about Bruce Campbell. Ok yeah Evil Dead movies were pretty good……… And? I mean, Woody Harrelson starred in better movies, do I hear anyone praise this other Has Been? No… Bruce Campbell is over-rated and has always been.

  • BluJay

It wasn't as bad as you made it sound, I thought it was pretty funny.

Yeah it was very 3 Amigos

Yeah some of the jokes were bad

But I thought Bruce was really funny, and it's nice to see that he's so humble. It's a spoof of himself and his movies, and it's dedicated to his fans.

I liked it, but that's just me

Apart from that annoying goth kid, a few really bad jokes and Ted Raimi's somewhat un-PC old Chinese guy (shudder), My Name is Bruce was good fun.

Bruce Campbell's chin should have its own spin-off.

Other than the first two Evil Dead movies, My Name Is Bruce is probably my favorite Bruce Campbell movie. It’s funny, has some violence to it, and Bruce takes this opportunity to joke about himself, something many actors/actresses don’t do. It’s a fun movie.

And Bubba Ho-Tep was dreadful and boring.

Oh, almost forgot about Burn Notice. Awesome. Kinda fell off of it halfway through the third season.

    Bruce is/was better then this.

Well, its not that long since he did a nice movie. Bubba Ho Tep. It was fun to watch and it was sad. I think Bruce still got it in him, but he just needs to get it out.
