Busted!

Looks like I won’t be a MythBuster.

I was contacted a little while ago about some possible sponsorship opportunities with the Discovery Channel. Apparently they were looking for some people to film some tie-ins to Mythbusters, and people-who-know-people asked if I had any ideas to pitch for SCIENCE-based content– Myths to bust, prompting viewers to visit the Discovery website and submit their own myths, that kind of thing.

I said, “SCIENCE? Do I have the guy for you!”

Sadly, while the people I talked to were very enthusiastic about my ideas, it seems Discovery was going in an entirely different direction. It’s a shame, too. I was never going to be on the set with Adam & Jamie even if I’d scored the gig, but there was potentially a fair amount of money in it, and I thought the whole mad scientist thing would really wow ‘em. Seemed like a good fit, the way the promotion was described to me.

Oh well. Maybe they were afraid Doctor Insano would run around on Meerkat Manor testing the myth “can meerkats dodge golf clubs?”

Yeah, I know, I’m whoring myself out for cash. I’d sell out for a sandwich and gas money. You don’t want to know what I’d do to get some of that phat MythBusters money.

That’s a shame, but no worries, you’ll get money somehow. That’s a mundane reply to that article but I can’t think of anything else to say at the moment.

You are making your splash, that much is obvious. Just don’t stop. Stay on the rock while it rolls and see where it takes you.
You are getting pimped by Yahtzee and contacted by discovery, and lets face it. You have been at this for a couple of years and barely scratched the tip of the iceberg.

Don’t be one of those guys that gets ALMOST to his breakout point and then we don’t hear from them for two years and the opportunity is lost. :P

Getting money for doing something you enjoy isn’t really selling out. Anyone would want that.

Same as people who complain about the AVGN selling out because he moved to another site and is getting paid for his work, as though it really affects them in any way (his stuff’s still free after all). If everyone who got money for doing something that they loved was accused of “selling out”, then that’d make countless writers and artists sell-outs just because their job just so happens to be something they enjoy.

The “they’re just jealous!” excuse is a pretty bad one when used to combat criticism, but in this case I’d say it really is the case: most people who accuse someone of selling out aren’t doing something they love for money, so they find it unfair when someone else is.

Uh, but yeah, shame about not getting the gig Spoony. Still, the fact that they came to you in the first place is a good sign that you’re getting somewhere. Something’s bound to come along eventually.

Dude, I’m in your position right now (at least I think). Currently unemployed and live on noodles and water every day. I however *will* donate money to you as soon as I get a job. It wont be a huge amount, but I figure I owe it to you from all the chuckles and laughs I’ve had from you for absolutely free. At least enough to buy you a couple of beers. Your’e the first one on my list as soon as I get a job.

Anyhow, keep up the good work. I cant believe you dont have a position as a writer/journalist for like…anything. You would still be hilarious if you reviewed freaking flowers in a home wife magazine. Hopefully (and probably) most of your fans feel the same way.

    Spoony, I love Doctor Insano.

Honestly, I don’t care for the little comic things he’s been in. But at the end of your latest review for Final Fantasy 8, he was funny. I think you should consider playing him “full time” as kind of a gig. Maybe do something like Rooster Teeth does and charge a modest fee to view the videos of Doctor Insano early, before they’re released to the general public.

Seriously, it’s like the role and persona of Doctor Insano was MADE for you. You can’t picture him without picturing you in the getup, even in the comics and such about him. It just fits. Like white on rice.

And honestly, Spoony, I’m glad you didn’t whore yourself out to Mythbusters. Mythbusters does a VERY poor job of busting myths. You could take their myth about what does and does not break a car engine. Some of the stuff that didn’t break the engine WOULD have broken it, if it hadn’t been made so recently. Car engines these days tend to be made to allow for sugar to be burned. What do you think is in Ethanol? Basically, they’re pretty popular phonies.

You know, if Doctor Insano were to appear on TV, I’d prefer it to be on something more significant. This sounds like it would have been just for a brief advertisement, then the Doc would be finished. The chances of him being reused are low.

Then again, what’re the chances of being given another opportunity?

Actually, Mythbusters is a concept that’s right up your alley. As I see it, one of the things that defines you is that you like to reality-check the sh*t out of everything. If there’s a flaw in something’s logic, you find it. If there’s something unrealistic about an idea, you find it. Your best Dr. Insano bit, in my opinion, was the one on Final Fantasy 8, and that was basically a take on how unrealistic it is to have people blindly trust an overtly evil villain.

Um, so what? The point was that those myths are still being circulated even though modern technology has made them obsolete.

By your logic we might as well keep repeating the myth that it’s impossible to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean or travel faster than the speed of sound. After all, once upon a time those were both true, right?

    Lame, yo. Lame.

At least you’re attracting attention though.

Bummer. Even though I don’t watch the show now, I’d have tuned in to see that. Keep on keepin’ on, and something good will turn up for you. You have too much talent for me to think otherwise.

You know I’d seriously watch that!

though Mythbusters is a pretty awesome show to begin with… Sadly there can only be ONE mad scientist on Mythbusters! Prepare your tinfoil hats

It would have been cool to see you on TV, but there will be other opportunities no doubt.

Pity Brainiac is British.. the current host is terrible, but Dr Insano would fit perfectly!

Awh, that’s too bad. While I watch the Discovery Channel sometimes, I don’t really watch MythBuster’s, BUT if you were going to be on there (in some way) that would of been totally AWESOME to see. I would of enjoyed watching “Doctor Insano” do the weird things he does. XD

I’d say whore away. If you got the opportunity to become a dancing chimp for some green, take it. Fucking economy. I think Dr. Insano is too fun a character to neglect, if just for those space-xray-glasses. It wouldn’t have been tough either… you could write any kind of nonsense as long as there was even the tiniest degree of plausibility. What a shame.

If it’s all the same, I would have avoided TDC anyways. I’m too mindless to give a damn about anything relevant on TV.

That would have been incredible if you got to do some work with The Discovery Channel. You definitely woulda earned a break like that and some fat cash.
