I tend to watch more of the G4 Network than I really should. I’m still in mourning over the loss of TechTV, and I ought to boycott the whole damned thing in protest. It’s very telling that the only thing I really watch on that network is ten year-old reruns of Cops and headache-inducing episodes of Unbeatable Banzuke, and really, I could watch Cops anywhere.

I don’t even bother with their flagship shows. G4 has really put all their horses behind Attack of the Show, hoping against hope that you’re tuning in nightly to watch Olivia Munn deep-throat a bratwurst. Olivia’s cute, I’ll grant you, and she has a comfortable one-of-the-dudes personality, but the show is nothing more than a televised version of a couple of annoying fuckers sending you links to funny shit they found on YouTube (in fact, they probably have a segment entitled “Funny Shit We Found on YouTube.”) X-Play is boring and overproduced, and lost their “brutally honest” credibility long ago when they stopped reviewing games and started doing theme episodes where they review one game a show if you’re lucky. The only worthwhile part of X-Play anymore is Sessler’s Soapbox online, which is Adam Sessler’s blog where he can finally talk off the record and give his real opinion for a change. And that’s all we ask out of X-Play or any game review show: a fucking honest opinion.

G4 has tried expanding out to a few new areas. My favorite is the “Movies That Don’t Suck” gimmick, which is really just an excuse to play old action flicks with retro NBC Mystery Movie lead-ins. The problem with that is that they don’t vary the chosen film nearly enough, and they tend to re-run the films well past their expiration date. They must have shown Return of the Dragon twice a day for about a month straight. The Onion Movie is cute, but worthless when the profanity is bleeped out and we can’t even call Steven Seagal “Cockpuncher.” And someone explain to me how Robocop 3 DOESN’T suck. Because it does, cyborg ninjas notwithstanding.

They’ve also been running promos for a new show featuring Morgan Webb for about two months now (the exact same promo for that entire time, in fact) called G4 Underground, a show that wants desperately to be a hard-hitting, extreme exposé program about “subjects the other networks won’t touch.” The promos are hilariously bad, and there’s a strange air of shame that permeates the entire production. They’re really playing up the dark, forbidden nature of their subject matter, which is all the funnier because Morgan looks about as street as Nancy Grace. She looks like the sort of chick who would ask you to help smoosh a spider in her bathroom, not run around scummy S&M sex clubs and slum around underground fight clubs.

And maybe there’d be some value in watching that; it might be pretty funny watching Morgan’s “oooh yucky” reaction to the sleazy things she’s forced to immerse herself in. It’s one of the major reasons I like Dirty Jobs so much, not necessarily because I care about the jobs, but because we like Mike Rowe and because we love watching him suffer by forcing himself to do the world’s most nauseating things. Morgan has all the personality of burnt toast, but the argument is rendered moot by the fact that she’s not even in the show.

Seriously.

I tried watching one episode and found it so painful that I suddenly started cleaning the entire house and left the show running in the background. I didn’t see the whole thing, but from what I saw, Morgan’s not even in it. Oh, she hosts the intro and outro sequences that bookend each story, but she’s never actually there when the story is taking place. The segments I saw were sit-down interviews with an anonymous, off-screen person, or just people talking directly to the camera. Of course, when you do see Morgan in these lead-in segments, they’ve done their best to street her up, by dressing her in a designer leather jacket (because people who wear leather are STREET!) and putting her on a sidewalk outside at night (See? She’s near a street! She must be street as well!) But even my brother voiced doubts as to whether or not she was really outside, wondering if they even got her that far outside the door instead of just a green screen.

As for the shocking, unspeakable stories getting blown wide open by the G4 Underground? Hold onto your hats, folks, because these were the stories covered in their premiere show:

1) Amateur pornographers - Microbudget filmmakers who create and sell their own porn films, Zack and Miri-style. Yeah, that’s provocative. There’s nothing scandalous here, it’s just two people who like to set up a tripod and a DV camera and tape themselves when they fuck. Okay, so instead of keeping it for personal use they put it up on their website for sale, but come on, amateur porn? That’s what you got? Two people fucking in a Motel 6? The Internet desensitized us to amateur porn a decade ago. I’ve googled more perverted shit than that just researching Final Fantasy 8.

2) “Real-Life” Superheroes - This is where the show just got hilarious, following a couple of self-styled vigilante heroes who stalk around the streets of the city wearing homemade superhero costumes to fight crime. This is where you’d just love to see the host’s reaction as she sits down and tries to talk rationally to a guy wearing crime-fighting goggles and a flowing cape. It was at this point I started wondering whether or not the show had already completely run out of ideas and was just making stuff up to fill time, because this was just so silly that you’d almost expect it to be an ancillary news story on The Onion.

C’mon, this is the shocking truth behind closed doors? I know why these are the stories the other networks won’t touch, because these stories are fucking stupid.

Next time, they explore the world of “ultra wrestling,” which appears to be nothing more than the gory, disgusting brand of backyard wrestling involving cheese graters and fluorescent light tubes. Everyone’s heard of it, and really, once you’ve seen a single match of two people maiming themselves in this crap, you’ve seen them all. There’s nothing shocking about it, except how shockingly stupid these people are, and I highly doubt the show would have the balls to explore the real dark side of backyard wrestling: the people who have hopelessly crippled themselves jumping off roofs or been paralyzed taking a botched Styles Clash.

Even the website is inept, with exactly zero online features and “undefined” news stories for the next show. Kinda shows you how much faith G4 has in this one, doesn’t it?

man this is so sad. x-play use to be such a great show and morgan was so awsome and adam was damn hilarious. they had good shows like arena and cheat (with the cory guy not kristen holt ) xplay use to be about reveiwing games and making fun of the barley workable piles of shit some companys pumped out for a quick buck. now ,like you said, your lucky if you get one reveiw a show, they have interveiwers with game makers(wich no one cares about and doesnt work becuz you cant say “why did your game suck?” so its no guna be brutaly honest or funny) the new stage is retarted looking and they got rid of all the good characters. i havnt been watching it much but the few times i did there wus no hide nor hair of ratty (no pun intended) or link or specail agent bob and secrent agent steve i mean its like they went “you know all that good stuff about xplay the stuff everyone likes?” “yeh?” “lets take it all out and replace it with unfunny shit no one cares about and air things that have NOTHING to do with gaming or tech …like cops or the incredible benzuake or how about ninja warrior” i mean channel is suppose to be about tech and gaming and the only two shows that come close are xplay and aots and they suck at it now!! *sigh* i miss xplay….it wus rly kewl what they did last summer though. they replayed a whole bunch of old xplay episdoes….maybeas if to say “we know this is what you rly wunt but we cant admit we fucked up that bad so here just dont tell anyone.”?

I have fond memories of the episode where they reviewed Call of Cthulu and Adam kept relating every review and sketch to the Cthulu mythos (even Super Princess Peach) and still gave the main game a 3/5. That episode got me into Lovecraft and I’ve always been glad about that. Not mention the Communism episode that was followed by the patriotic episode…good times. Now Sessler’s Soap box is the only thing left that has any real X-play value.

We tend to agree often, and this is no exception. G4 is a frustrating jumble with exactly 2 hours of game related programming originally, rerun a few times. Sure throw in code-honkies for an extra minute. Problem.. Your Swat 4 segment is more video game related than cops.. Trek 2.0, Tron 3.0, Unbeatable wife, all non-videogame related. Movies that wouldn’t suck if you didn’t blast them every day… When Tech TV died, pieces of it should have came to G4..

I think that the entire cast barring that thin CHEAT lady are pompous elitist individuals who feel that their “leet” skills in gaming give them entitled opinion. Or thats what they are selling… I know that the Xplay chick sucks at games she plays (she’s been seen), I’ve never seen other cast attempt it and their really just “doing their job”… The whole channel has little to do with the love of video games and sincere love for an asinine mmorpg like culture that simply is irrelevant once the channel changes.. Noob, epic fail, leet, lol (pronounced instead of spelled) all BS internet like cultural edicts written by the G4 interns to relate enough to PC/Mac attached gamers who leave G4 on for the noise. All so ITT Tech and Colins college can sale false game development careers and Mountain Dew can quench the thirst of athletes who inversely mirror the G4 demographic.

I’m not disagreeing with Spoony here, i’m totally with him. The moment Comcast decided to merge Tech TV and G4 together was a day that would remain in the minds of gamers as “The Day Shit Got Real”. The only real reason to watch G4 for me is Xplay, and I don’t even know when that show comes on anymore. I do keep up with the online shows Fresh Ink, The MMO Report and ESPECIALLY Sessler’s Soapbox. Really, the only thing video game related on G4TV anymore is Sessler himself.

I’m just happy that Scot Rubin has been doing Allgames (which he is somewhat involved in now. I think he is trying to get it put on television) and Victor Lucas has been keeping up with Electric Playground and Reviews on the Run (aka Judgment Day).

I’ll always have my memories of classic G4 and Tech TV…

Don’t want to say “I told you so” because we’ve never ever met before…but as soon as the merger went down, I stopped watching this channel. In a flash they erased most of the shows I liked, kept shows I hated (Robot Wars, ugh) and neutered the shows that did remain.I guess I kept tuning in for a while to drool over Morgan Webb, but eventually I got tired of her and her show. It’s not that she’s not a “real” gamer or anything dumb like that, I just felt like she came off as someone reading reviews instead of giving them. In a flash they erased most of the shows I liked, kept shows I hated (Robot Wars, ugh) and neutered the shows that did remain.I guess I kept tuning in for a while to drool over Morgan Webb, but eventually I got tired of her and her show. It’s not that she’s not a “real” gamer or anything dumb like that, I just felt like she came off as someone reading reviews instead of giving them. These days, I do follow Sessler’s Soapbox which has finally shown me that he was the best thing about X-Play. If Morgan Webb has any opinions about games, I’ve never heard them.

But yeah, Olivia Munn is pretty damn attractive.

It was kind of like a machinima in that aspect. It had a lot of mmo related jokes but it wasn’t enough to go over a non-mmorer’s head.

If you want something that is like the ‘spiritual/true successor’ of TechTV I suggest checking out Revision3 which has various shows like TekZilla, Systm, Scam School, and Diggnation (as well as a lot of others), it also has some (all?) of the people who were on The ScreenSavers and some of the other original TechTV shows.

I used to love x-play. I remember when they had 3-4 reviews an episode. Now it is a show that takes about 2 minutes to review a single game and uses the other 18 minutes previewing games. This is my main problem with that formula: I think it eliminates the whole point of reviewing in the first place. Every preview is a 5 minute long commercial. If you preview games way more and way longer than you review games, you are just an info-commercial and when you do review something, it is hard to take you seriously. So, even though the debate that they “favor” Microsoft games is a little farfetched, part of me thinks maybe they do get paid for previewing certain games, awarding certain games, and reviewing certain games and only being “brutally honest” when it doesn’t effect a major title.

Not to mention, the sketches were sometimes really great, like the infamous sketch where the Emperor from Star Wars goes temp. My dad still quotes lines from that. “Now witness the fire power of this fully armed and operational invisible doggy fence!”

Heck, X-Play was even brutally honest about their own Network. I remember when G4 would have these elaborate advertisements that they’d show over their programming that took up nearly half the screen and even play sound to make it even harder to watch their programming. So, in the review of some game called Dragon Riders or Dragon Racing (forgot what it was called) they covered their entire review with fake ads, and even joked on one occasion: “And tune it later, if you can even see us over the ads advertising Star Trek.” I respected them for sticking it to their own bosses.

Ever since they reformatted, I was kind of sad that they won’t do their brutally honest reviews anymore, or even funny sketches. Also, they made a more biased shift to hardcore gaming. I am a casual gamer at heart, and a wii owner. Back then, I couldn’t help feeling like I was being looked down upon for being a casual gamer. And what confirmed that feeling was E3 2008, when their E3 coverage only had 2 or 3 wii games, and mostly first person shooters for the PS3 and Xbox360. I was fallowing 3 different gaming websites for E3 coverage and saw way more coverage for the wii on those websites. Then, when Xplay did their “Best of E3 2008″ show, they pretty much spoke down to us Wii-gamers, pretty much saying “There isn’t enough games on the show floor for the wii to do a list, so here’s a few we liked.” Of course, they only displayed the two or three games they covered on the list. I took X-play off my list of recorded shows soon after.

My friend still thinks the network is great, I dunno what to say to him.

I stopped careing about G4 for about a year now. I still cannot stand ATTACK OF THE SHOW. I still swear Kevin Ferria runs THE WHOLE FUCKIN NETWORK like it was his. Or if not he’s the son of the network owner. I really can’t stand the guy and it seems like everyone that worked with the guy (Diane Mizzota of FILTER who went to GAME SHOW NETWORK’S BINGO) seem to be elsewhere and doing better than being around that turd. My sis still apparently occasionly sees the videogame clip show show but I don’t watch the network period. The last real chance I saw anything there was XPLAY sold out where they talk about gadgets and other random stuff in place of being all about video games. Again as Spoony said ‘I mourn over the days of TECH TV’. I still do myself. PORTAL was a awsome show and I still miss it, although I still have episodes on a VHS tape.

PS: If I really wanna see Morgan Webb THAT BADLY….I’ll see her on a page in a MAXIM magazine where she sprints a two piece swimsuit talking about the show and games n stuff. *rolls eyes*

I’ve been watching G4 since 2005, right after they bought out TechTV and I’ll admit that it hasn’t been the same since early 2006. The only thing I watch now is AOTS, of which I watch about 20 minutes of. Yeah, I pretty much stopped watching G4 when they merged with TechTV. I remember about a year ago watching an episode of X-play for old time’s sake. But, instead of nostalgia, I received nausea.

That show was awesome. It was just the kind of show you would expect on a “video game network.”

When it became G4TechTV and then eventually just G4, they pretty much removed all of the less popular shows and heavily changed the other shows for the worse.

I might get thwapped for this but one of the shows I miss watching on G4 actualy is ninja warrior. I don’t know if they’re still showing it though because it’s not included in the channel package I have. Nether is sci fi. Oh right let me correct myself, syfy. I really really hope some sort of karmic backlash comes to the producers for that one.

As they grow in popularity they get more interviews with important figures and are afraid be critical of them for fear of losing access to them in future. The real opinions that caused the shows success gets neutered resulting in less credibility and decreased rating.

So now, I don’t have cable! Extreme? You tell me. I knew when G4 took over Tech TV this kind of thing would happen, I stopped watching the network at that point (Except for X-play, which did well until recently.. now its also garbage). Its sad to see this kind of thing happen, and I can only hope G4 fails so maybe we can get Tech TV back.. or something similar atleased…

To air any episode of the series, you also need the rights to the movie being riffed on. In some cases, the movies were public domain, but often they were not.

Further complicating matters, some filmmakers weren’t exactly pleased with having their movies mocked and they are a bit touchy about re-licensing the movies (IIRC, the guy who produced the Gamera movies, for instance, was quite angry about how his movies were treated) .

G4 has sucked for 6 months now. I used to like it a lot but now i can’t watch it. I have been looking for some place to tell them how they r F—ing up the channel i used to love, and Attack of the Show is so so shity i can’t watch 1 show of it and not fall a sleep.

Anyway… Did you know that some final fantasy freak actually created a Fallout 3 Mod that includes the Gunblade in the game?
I know, it’s just amazing!
The thing isn’t that powerfull, kinda of a good weapon, I don’t know about how balanced it is, but it seems like some un-necesary gadget… You have to use a item to change it betwen Sword and Rifle (I guess it’s a rifle), so in any case, it’s just like selecting different weapons with similar texture…
Next thing is to create a quest that recreates a whole final fantasy game inside the Fallout 3 setting.

I gave up on G4 when they announced they were going to be airing Star Trek, Cops, Cheaters, Fastlane, the list goes on and on.
The only thing I see on G4 are those shitty movies (they really DO suck), Cops, Cheaters, and that’s it. Nothing else is on. I’d rather watch Paid Programming.

I, too, miss TechTV/ZDTV.. I tried to tape as many Gamespot TV episodes as I could, and in college, where I had no cable, they were the only thing to keep me sane, because I had basically NO DVD’s to watch, or a player to watch them on.

And people wonder why I don’t care that I got rid of Cable years ago and didn’t really have a problem with them changing to digital broadcast. Who cares if you can’t tune into something you don’t watch anyway. I still miss Eye Drops, Screen Savers, Call for Help and X-Play when they actually were given time to play the games and freedom to give their own reactions. They mutated X-Play into another shill show like the ones G4 was running all the time before the merger. They killed everything that was good about Tech TV in the merger. Heck Nerd Nation was more hard hitting and dealing with more dark secret things than G4 Underground can seem to conceptualize.

I want Tech TV back. Damn Virgin and any other related property for letting Tech TV be raped this way. May “Virgin Galactic” never EVER Prosper.
