He’s the best there is at what he does, but unfortunately, what he does isn’t making movies. Try diagramming that sentence.

Yeah, I didn’t think a movie based on Wolverine’s origin was a good idea, either. Frankly, the X-Men don’t lend themselves to film very well. Personally, I prefer the Chris Claremont/John Byrne era of the Uncanny X-Men which was from the late 70′s to the early 80′s, but it’s entirely possible that’s just nostalgia talking, but probably not.

I am glad you mentioned how fake super hero movies are. It’s been something that’s been bothering me a lot lately. I realized I really didn’t enjoy most super hero movies at all. because they look fake for some reason. I find this unbelievable. If Star Wars can realize long ago in a galaxy far, far away, then why can’t super heroes work on the big screen? Is the look too tightly tied to the line drawings of an artist and thus only suited to animation? I don’t know.

Too bad this movie wasn’t so hot, but I haven’t been holding my breath over it.

Using mutants is just a lazy and boring way of telling a superhero story. Fuck X-men

Wolverine doesn’t look too appealing. The helicopter shots from the previews remind me a lot of the opening to Goldmember.

If only Adamantine bullets were real, I’d use them to rid my brain of this horrible memory.

Seriously, I drank about 4 pints straight after the film to dull the pain >_<*

I think the highlight of that movie for me was the opening (NO not the baby wolverine irony crap) The montage of the two men going through all those wars :P

Alright so I agree with your opinions, because truth be told It was a sheer pain to sit and watch the damn movie.
What made it for me, was the “Learn to fucking read” right at the end.
X-com movie…Spoony, you are truly a god among men.
Idea for a new shirt: “I died for your sins…” wouldnt be completely inappropriate.
Looking forward to the new stuff man! Keep being brutally honest and pissing those fanboys off!

Thanks for the Vlog, Spoony, sometimes I like them more than the regular vids. Thanks, too, for saving me like the twenty bucks it takes me to see a movie nowadays, I was going to go on Monday, but not anymore.

I thought it was funny you telling all the haters who kept saying, “hurry up and come out with a new video,” to either wait, learn to read, or leave. I thought that was pretty funny.

Now, if you wanna rage against something, try the wolverine game. It’s alright considering it’s copied off god of war almost to the T. Granted, it does have some interesting things like the destroyed skin/muscle and how he regenerates the damage, but it’s still a ripoff of GOW, especially down to the climbing animations and some attack animations are almost identical.

Great vid. I was “not” able to watch it when it was leaked and I wasn’t impressed. I agree with the action scenes being basically the best part of the movie but the LOLAMNESIA thing was fucking retarded.

I loved X-men my favorite comic book back when I was in to it. So many different characters so many different personalities, but honestly as an X-men fan I just never liked the movies they were so so. They only focused on the stories of 2 or 3 of the characters and ignored everyone else. The comics where never like that everyone had a story and time in the spotlight. O-well Psylocke my favorite don’t think she’ll ever get a movie.

Let’s not forget that the guy with perfect aim died RIGHT BEFORE they made the Adamantium bullets. I saw it when it was still a workprint and let me tell you: Without the CGI effects, the movie was HILARIOUS.

Also, I lol’d when you mentioned the Superman’s parents thing. When I was watching the workprint with my buddies we were commenting on that.

“Clark is gonna be pissed when he sees his parents are dead, his motorcycle is destroyed and his jacket is stolen”

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but I’m pretty sure X-men takes place 15 years after Wolverine, and Cyclops could have been playing as young as 16. Actor didn’t look that young but they do shit like that sometimes. So I would say Cyclops is 30 – 31 in X-men 1. I can buy that.

so about those bullets to the face…..so if we go to the first movie where they had the x ray of his skeleton we’ll see some kind of a mark? And now all i see is wolverine searching in the empty kitchen for that last loaf of bread

  • Grusnoid

Weapon X was like the Nazi’s Final solution. The purpose of the weapon X program was to design and make a weapon capable of killing any mutant regardless of their powers. So an indesturctiable man with Claws that can slice through anything makes for the perfect Grim Reaper. Weapon X was originaly tested on the Incrediable Hulk with mixed results, but the ultimate failure was the fact that the weapon gained conciusness and realized it was a walking holocaust. When that happend it turned on its creators and destroyed the lab and most of the notes taken on the experiment. So that in a nutshell is the main purpose and history of the weapon X program, to create an unstopable killing machine that can eliminate every last mutant.

THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING THIS! I SO WANTED TO SEE YOU RIP THIS MOVIE APART! Everything you said was exactly what I thought after seeing this movie. I couldn’t believe how bad they fucked up Deadpool. When they turned him into Weapon XI, he reminded me of Baraka from Mortal Kombat. I can’t believe they gave him retractable swords like the admentaum claws Wolverine has. The ending was completly retarded, with Wolverine getting shot in the head with admentaum bullets. First of all, Wolverine should’ve been able to sense Stryder (yes I can’t spell) behind him! HE HAS HEIGHTENED SENSES! He can hear them talking about erasing his memory when he’s in the tank, but for some reason he can’t hear a guy coming up behind him. Second, if they were going to use a gun then why didn’t they give the gun with the bullets to Zero before he went to go and try to capture Wolverine. They know Wolverine is invincible and yet they go send him and he gets killed. Finally, WOLVERINE DOES NOT LOSE HIS MEMORY FROM ADMENTAUM BULLETS, BUT FROM THE ACTUAL PROCEDURE ITSELF! The characters in this movie were poorly developed and some of them didn’t belong in this movie like Cyclops, Blob, and Gambit. Also, those characters hardly got any screen time. I loved how you mentioned that the coulple Wolverine meets looks like Superman’s adoptive parents! You are so right! Lastly, I agree with you on the CGI effects. I was ready to burst out laughing when I saw the Professor Xavier scene. This movie SUCKED, and I can not believe how there are so many people who say this was the best X-men movie ever! F*** NO IT WAS NOT THE BEST X-MEN MOVIE EVER! If I had to pick which one was my favorite, I would go with X-2, but defintely not WOLVERINE! Thank you for reviewing this movie and keep up with the good work Spoony if this comment gets to you!

Spoony why bother giving a shout out to the ignorant. No one wants the satisfaction of reading a deep story these days. Just quick, cheap, meaningless, appeasement. P.S. were can I get the FF8 Sucks shirt, I have this friend who’s an over zealous fanboy, and me and some of my other friend like to harass him.

I haven’t made it to the movies in months, money is a little tight. But with that review, I think I would have waited for DVD anyway, thanks for the heads up.

As an aside though, I think you may want to consider just ignoring the people that snivel because you aren’t providing enough free entertainment.
I don’t think you need to pander to them either. Don’t get me wrong.
I am just saying that essentially telling off a large chunk of your fan base by saying that you don’t need them because they aren’t giving you anything has the potential to negatively impact your clicks per day, which will effect your bottom line. So, grin and bear it. Or run the risk of driving off the obsessive clowns that check your site thirty times a day looking for new updates.
Once again, not saying you need to beg forgiveness or anything stupid. Just saying ignore them. That is my advice, anyway.

Solid review for the most part, but there’s some things you said about Deadpool I just want to address. (SPOILERS AHEAD) First off, I didn’t get what you said about Deadpool not being a pretty boy. It’s not like Deadpool was BORN ugly, and by the end of the movie he is his typical ugly self. So…I really don’t understand what you meant. Second, Deadpool has always been able to teleport. Yeah sure, it was a device in the comics that let him do that, but so were Spider-Man’s wrist shooters. Lastly, and this goes to everyone, be sure to stick around after the credits!!! There are three different endings depending on which theater you go to, and two of the possible three set up for a possible Deadpool spinoff movie. (I was unlucky enough to get the one that didn’t)

So apparently I’m the only Deadpool fan who wasn’t really pissed off about him in this movie, but I wasn’t expecting to see him in this movie much to begin with. Outside having been given Cyclops’ eye beams, everything I like about him got into the movie somehow. At the beginning he has his humor,(“Ok…people are dead!”) he then gets turned into an ugly horror movie reject, has the same powers from the comics (I don’t see why having the swords coming out of his wrist is that big a deal to some people, but hey, it’s understandable) and he even breaks the fourth wall in one of the after-credits scenes. Deadpool was really only in the movie as a small fanservice and as a setup for him to return in his own possible movie. And if that ever happens, I’m sure he’ll be given his costume, guns, and jokes. Though that might not ever happen now since this movie is probably going to turn into a box office flop due to the poor reviews.

Striker walked away because that one chick used her powers to make him. Well, at least she did that in the work print version, they might have cut that out of the final version, but that wouldn’t make sense.

Hey Noah! I’m a big fan of yours and I totally agree with you. I mean I’m going to be honest… the only reason why I watched this movie was because Daniel Henney was in it (Agent Zero) AHAHA! Yeah I know I’m a freakin’ sell out. So it was kinda disappointing to me that he died so early in the movie but anyway! I thought this movie was pretty funny since like you mentioned with the posing shit. Like when Logan was leaving the group (man I’m so bad at remembering) and the camera just stays on the rest of the group and the scene fades out you notice that EVERYONE WAS FREAKING POSING!!! I thought it was a photoshoot for a few moments! Then I thought it was freaking hilarious that everyone was jumping around like ninjas on crack. Like AHAHHA ok I don’t know, some parts of it were similar to the matrix like when logan was in a battle with Gambit and Gambit jumps off the freakin’ wall (literally) and the part slowed for a couple of seconds. And I think the people that worked on this movie worked too hard to make this movie look cool that it made it look kind of retarded like in the beginning (sorry I’m jumping around the movie) and the boss dude.. or whatever of the group tells zero to try and get through the outside security of the building they are trying to get to…so Zero just like freaking WALKS without trying to avoid the freaking bullets shot at him then he just freaking shoots his gun without aiming and kills everyone…because thats just how COOL he is I guess because he doesnt have to aim. God I dont even know how that came out but I am sure you are really confused by now but whatever lol.

Also, they gave him an adamantium skeleton to protect his brain. Before he was strong, but not indestructible. In theory if you destroyed his brain, he would die. The adamantium encases it and keeps it safe, so even if his entire body is vaporized, his skeleton, and by proxy his brain, survives.

    Hmm…

    Well…

Here’s the thing. I grew up on the animated series so X-men, as corny and grandiose as it is, has a nostalgic place in my heart. I actually never really read any of the comics all the way (though I am very versed in their history).

So here’s my list of things that you hated that I have analyzed.

Bone Claws- Well, you know, before he has the anamantium he’s NOT invincible. You’d be able to blow him up and he’d be a goner. He can regenerate, yes… but he can’t re-assemble… to my knowledge. So having an indestructible body of metal-licious metal makes it pretty damn tough to stop him…. Unless of course you’re Magnito… (Totally NOT a necessary plot advantage…)

Deadpool- I think, for the movie… he was as good as he could get. “If you didn’t have such a mouth on you, you’d be a great solder” (tee hee Murk with a Mouth, tee hee). Before Deadpool got Wolverine’s powers, he wasn’t crazy and he wasn’t ugly. He has cancer so the regenerative powers end up curing the cancer but creating an excess build up of tumors which then make him crazy and ugly…. Though at some point he does gain the power to reform his original face. I mean, let’s face it, you could never make Deadpool as 4th wall break-ey as he is in the books… HOWEVER if you DID stay until after the credits, you might have seen him ‘shush’ the audience, an allude to breaking that wall? I did not like his sword claws. D:<

Sabertooth- Everyone agrees he got fucked over in the first movie. The worst thing for me was when he was running up the side of the building in Africa…. that… that was bad wires… D: Though I think the actor was a better one this time around.

Bad CG – OMG I am glad I’m not the only one. It was LITERALLY the bathroom scene that started it for me too… and after that I couldn’t help but notice how bad they were. I don’t remember them being so obviously bad in the older movies… I’ll have to double check, but yeah… the CG budget for this one must have been smaller than usual.

Bullet in the brain and walking away – I think that it makes since. If the brain is damaged, it’s damaged. Even if it repairs itself, it’s lost all the information that was written there. It essentially rebooted his brain. I bought that well enough… As for walking away, I think he wasn’t counting on Logan getting up in the time it would take him to go kill ole’ girl. Also… to be fair… he pretty much lost all his shit. :<

Cyclops- I think he was only in it because somebody had a really cool idea for how to destroy that building and needed a way to get it done. Also maybe a way to try and tie in the connection to CREEPY AGE Professor X.

Gambit- Gambit and Wolverine totally have history together… So I’m happy he was there. Since they were rounding up mutants and he got away… it makes since. It would be easy for Gambit to get out, I’d assume. What really pissed me off was his half assed accent/writing. He wasn’t very HIM. There wasn’t enough HIM. Though I remember hearing rumor of Gambit having his own origin story so maybe they wanted to set that up? Gambit was always one of my favorite characters so seeing him botched made me sad.

Overall. I didn’t hate it. I’m a fan so the fan service present was good times for me. I thought it was much better than most super hero movies that Fox/Marvel pops out these days (cough DareDevil, Cough), and FAR better than X-men 1 and 3. However it could never touch Iron Man.

    Final Score 5.5 / 10
I enjoyed it more than enough.

    Hmm…

Though at some point he does gain the power to reform his original face. ;I really loved your review, but I have to correct you. You see, Cyclops doesn’t actually shoot lasers out of his eyes. They’re PUNCH BEAMS FROM THE PUNCH DIMENSION! As any comic fan knows, this is clearly very different, and much cooler.

At least the Wolverine game fared a little better. But even that fell prey to “OMG, GET IT OUT THE DOOR IN TIME WITH THE MOVIE!” syndrome. Sad considering that if they put a little more work into it, the thing could’ve actually helped break the Movie Game Curse ™.

And Spoony, the little rant about your more impatient fans was a little unnecessary. I can see where you’re coming from man, but that doesn’t make you look good. It’s a little insulting even to casual fans like me. If you think you’ve got impatient jerkwad fans just imagine how the AVGN feels. James probably has people crawling down his throat screaming “Hay! Make video, Nerd!”. It’s the nature of the internet. Grin and bear it or tune those dudes out. The jerks aren’t the majority of your fans, they’re just the most vocal. That’s what jerks are – loud and annoying.

Keep up the great work Noah.

Deadpool actually does have the teleporting power, but it wasn’t because he’s a mutant, it actually teamed up with a guy from the future, Cabel or something like that and he got a little piece of technology plot hole that allows him to teleport from one place to another and then he’ll return to where he originally was. THAT part was accurate, but he doesn’t have eye laser or swords from his arms. Also Deadpool was never pretty. He entered the weapon X program to cure his cancer, though it kinda did, his “cure” fucked up his face and that’s why he wears the mask and it is the reason why he’s insane. Also they dont need word bubbles for Deadpool, but they should have Deadpool break the forth wall MANY times, and NO the part at the end where he shushes the audience doesnt count.

Along with Wolverine’s amnesia, he shoulda had 5 DIFFERENT amensia by now, and they messed up the origins of why he was called Wolverine. Zero, the gun shooting Asian guy was a german guy and they really cheesed him out.

Emma Frost didnt get much screen time at all,

Yeah, Sabertooth and Wolverine are brothers? ok I can kinda get that maybe, in the comics they kinda suggested Sabertooth was Wolverine’s father even, but even so, they give this brother brother relationship with the two when clearly they don’t do that at all in the comics. I mean, in the comics, Sabertooth once every year tries to hunt down Wolverine, try to kill him just to prove he can and then runs away, Sabertooth torments Wolverine, not treats him like this blood brother thing that they should stick together. Stupid as hell. Effects were good

If you are a fan of Wolverine, or anyone else or like me, a fan of Deadpool…brace yourself for a very very pathetic story that will piss you off

It sucks that the movie world misinterprets the comic world’s exaggerated gestures as “poses”.
Comic books almost always picture the characters in mid-action at an extreme camera angle, giving animation to an unchanging image (sans motion blur).
The movies… the opposite: the character will constantly pause in an awkward posture for several seconds with the camera level and zoomed up to their face, a still image in an animated flick.

You just know Marvel is dying for Fox to screw up and lose the rights to make X-Men movies, so Marvel can give the franchise the same care they gave Iron Man.

Now, as far as the bone claws, those were canon in the comics. I remember seeing one comic long ago that showed Wolvie in the jungle where he’d just gutted a boar with bone claws and started to eat it, and Storm flew over him, got disgusted, and made it rain on him to clean him up…so that was fine.

However, while I knew continuity with the comics would probably be played with a lot, they just threw it out the window and told their own story. For example, Chris Bradley/Bolt(the guy that turned on electrical devices by thought) was originally a member of Xavier’s school as a teenager. He also formed a close bond with a guy named Maverick, as both of them had the Legacy Virus. Well, Maverick goes off to fight Sabertooth, the virus kills him, but word gets out that Sabertooth did it. Bolt hears Sabertooth offed his mentor, swears revenge, and takes up the Maverick name. However, a friend revives the original Maverick, who then changes his name to Agent Zero…yes, the Agent Zero they had in Stryker’s group in this movie. Later, Agent Zero mistakes the new Maverick as a terrorist, they fight, and Zero kills Maverick, only learning at the end who he was fighting.

And, the movie used none of that, instead preferring to tell a completely new story…and once you take the movies at that value, they don’t seem to be that horrid. Average isn’t a bad score for this one. It’s a passable brainless popcorn flick, where you sit for 90 minutes, and just watch things blow up and people die.

I know there’s a ton more they should and could have done with these stories, and maybe if Marvel ever gets the rights back, we’ll get to see it.

I have to agree with you on the whole spiderman vs other mutants bit. I mean technically yeah he isn’t a mutant, but the spider bite did mutate/change his DNA so that should make him a mutant. Anyway on to what I thought about the movie

    1. They fucked up Deadpool. Seriously this was the most blatantly obvious if you had any sort of knowledge of the character before hand. I mean the guy went to the Weapon X project and just so happened to get a healing factor that just happened to stop his terminal cancer and then it messed him up because it created tumors all over his body leaving him scarred, that’s why he wears a mask all of the time. For the movie he was ok I mean when they gave him his character name as Deadpool in the movie I took it as he was a pool of all the powers of the dead mutants thus Deadpool. However they went WAY over the top giving him as many powers as they did especially the goddamn katana claws that just looked really stupid not to mention optic blast vision and whatnot. I liked him so much better at the start of the movie where he actually was more like Deadpool a snarky badass who used katanas to kill people. This was just hamfisted that’s all I have to say about it.

    2. Bad CGI/Wires and Sabertooth. Holy crap everytime Sabertooth was on screen I just wanted to cringe. It just didn’t look natural I mean you can have a human run on all fours (not that fast mind you) and make it look at least semi natural this look exhilarated and sloppy.

    3. Excessive use of Darth Vader NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO moments. Holy fuck, OK one time in a movie yeah that’s ok like when his girlfriend/wife or whatever gets it but seriously there were so many moments of just this really retarded exaggerated scream of like 8-10 seconds that just pissed me off. Maybe it was me I dunno.

    4. Gambit. OK I love Gambit he is easily my favorite character out of the whole bunch, sadly none of these movies are based off of the 90′s comic book run nor the TV show were gambit was actually cool and instead he just well…sucks he just sucks. I would rather just have not had him in the movie then.

    5. Zombie Photoshop Patrick Stewart. If you saw the movie you know what I’m talking about I had to take a couple of looks before I could decide if it was actually him or not. I decided on the latter and I’m still not sure.

    6. Wolverines laser claws. OK i understand that wolverines claws are REALLY sharp. I get it yeah, but they aren’t lasers meaning you have to put at least some pressure on them to cut through stuff. In the scene in the bathroom I recall him just touching the sink and its like his claws just slid right through with no pressure applied. It looked weird.

That’s just what I can think of off the top of my head.

Anyone make the Army of Two connection yet? Wolverine ->Salem, Sabertooth ->Rios, I mean the credit montage in the intro was like the tag team from hell (In a good way) and was ok, but the real kicker was at the end when one of them, I can’t remember who, yells “Back to back” and me and my friends couldn’t stop laughing.

Everything else to be said about the bloody jigsaw puzzle of a movie has already been presented.

  • TOYBOXX

The problem with super hero movies, like the X-Men series, is that the film studio is trying to please everyone at one time which alienates the true fan of the comics. And from what I’ve seen in X-Men 3, and Spiderman 3 for that matter, is that they have way too many characters, and not enough time to flesh the characters out for them, to be interesting. Take X3 for example: Angel was shown twice in the movie with little to no dialogue and the only action he was able to do in the movie was to swoop down and save his father from falling to his death – that’s it!

All I can say about X-Men origins: Wolverine is I’m glad I didn’t see it. The next big blockbuster this summer, besides Transformers 2 – which I’m highly excited for – is G.I. Joe and it’ll most likely be as lack luster as Wolverine.

Good review, and now for some not quite hate mail.

I can appreciate that you don’t like the X-men, but I feel saying they don’t really have many defining characteristics is a tad unfair. A character is certainly more than their powers. Cyclops is the team leader, has a rigid respect for authority and is wee bit fascist, respects Professor Xavier, is an orphan, has a brother he fights with occasionally and loves pool. Do you care? probably not, but he does have some salient traits at least.

as for origin stories, most Marvel characters sort of crap out there. Usually, it’s just some kind of radiation. Hulk? Radiation. Spider-Man? Radioactive Spider. Daredevil? Radioactive Waste. Fanatstic Four? Radition IN SPAAAAAAACE. Iron Man? Nuclear Powered Suit. a few buck the trend, Thor finds a magic hammer and Silver Surfer actually has one of the most interesting origin stories for my money, but the bulk of it is just rad poisoning. Nothing deep here.

As for everyone hating the X-men but loving everyone else that’s not really true either. Spider-man actually tends to have to battle uphill with his image-problem, and nobody thinks the Hulk is a good guy. The Fantastic Four bust their ass for a decent rep, and even then people still give them shit for being weirdos.

The point of the weapon X program was to embed the Adamantium in Wolverine’s body to make him indestructible. His regeneration is actually pretty limited and there is a fair number of things that could kill him, it’s just his regeneration has experienced a power creep over the years after writers fell in love with him. It seems silly by the time the movie came into play (and maybe they should have focused more on why the Adamantium was necessary) but it made more sense when it was first introduced.

Finally, surprisingly fans DON’T like characters splattered everywhere, it’s not really service to us. The studio THINKS that we like this, but marketing data really suggests that adding a whole bunch of recognizable characters adds almost nothing to the film in and of itself. If throwing enough beloved characters into one film were enough to make it a hit Space Jam would have swept the Oscars.

It does make sense not to include most of the characters from the other films; almost none of them have anything to do with or any place in Wolverine’s origin. The fact they included Emma Frost, Cyclops, and Gambit, was an enormous finger to the continuity, so I’m glad everyone else was spared this piece of crap.

Again, nice review, I love your writing ideas, I sincerely thank you if you actually took time to read this, and if not, at least my nerdy desire to split hairs has been satiated.

They closed his mouth. They took Deadpool, the guy that everyone loves for his hilarious comments, and they sealed his mouth. That is a fucking crime. I mean, unforgivable.

Also, Spoony, while Deadpool does have katanas, they certainly aren’t supposed to come out of his arms, like he’s fucking Baraka, or something. God, why even bother?

Also, I haven’t seen the movie, so I may be wrong about this, but does Stryker ever actually interact with Cyclops? If so, then Cyclops has no excuse for not remembering him in X-2.

  • ninja51

Well, I thought the movie was assable. Your point on Deadpool, was I guess justified, but I never have read any of the comics. I did like Ryan Renalds as him though, but he, along with every single other character in the movie was undeveloped. I liked the casting for nearly every roll, but it really didn’t matter because the characters that made most people excited for the movie got no more than 10 minute of screen time. The effected were really bad in my opinion. There were insanly obvious green-screen effects, a couple times his claws looked viciously fake, and the make-up on Patric Stuart to make him younger was absolutly laughable. They really should have made the opening seen longer though. It goes through Wolverine and Victor fighting together, and to be blunt, it was Fing ausome. The montage got me pumped, for a disapointment. Also, the idea that decapitating Victor, Deadpool, and Logan to kill them was kinda shifty in my opinion. Also, don’t even bother trying to connect Sabertooth in this movie to the one in the first X-men movie, as they are completely different characters. Overall, the movie could have been easily alot longer to develop the characters, make the fights longer, and polish those really bad effects at points. I recomend you see the movie, just because the moments you do see the characters other than wolverine are great, and the fights are actually cool, and I swear Logan meets Superman’s parents.

There was this series that was about a photographer following around super-powered characters early in the Marvel timeline. I think it was that series that kind of explained why people were cool with say The Avengers and not with mutants.

With the Avengers, there’s really only going to be one Iron Man (at a time…kinda). There really isn’t going to be a ton of them just running around and new ones popping out of nowhere. And people could kind of wrap their heads around it.

With mutants on the other hand, they could be anywhere. And any one. You could be a mutant and you may never even know it. That kind of freaked people out. Especially since so many decided that spandex-clad world domination was the way to go.

Then there’s the idea that mutants are the next stage of human evolution. People develop complexes about their penis size and suddenly you find out your entire race is evolving out of existence?

When you factor in human nature to hate and/or fear what they don’t understand, why Spider-Man is cool and mutants are not makes a whole lot of sense.

Completely in agreement with you on the Deadpool subject, the story and all it’s problems, the random character. Heck, I think I agree with most of what you said. They really should’ve spent more time on either character development & story OR action scenes & polishing some bad cgi.

Keep it up spoony, you keep bringing in some good, FREE, entertainment.

I was disappointed by this movie. I really agree with you about the effects. Some of them were just embarrassingly bad. I never read the comics, and even I knew that Deadpool was fucked by this movie. I couldn’t tell you if I found the new fast and furious movie more entertaining or not. The movies coming out this summer better pick up on quality or else its gonna be a very boring couple of months.

Maybe it have been great fails in movies recently.

But i always thought that Logan lost his memories from the implant of the adamantium and got the claws in the process.
Maybe i missing something but the only way i learn to known the X-men characters is from The Animated Series.

I always thought it was the fear that evolution was coming and leaving ordinary folk behind. Also the natural fear humanity has against something they don’t understand.

Also i think Wolverine can live longer than anyone else due to his metal skeleton.

I haven’t seen the movie yet if captain America isn’t in it then whats the point of calling it origins when it does go over important points in his life.

I think this was one of your better movie reviews, you didn’t go too crazy with it and you still hit it hard.

As for the adamantium claws, I remember reading that at one point an early wolverine origin was that he could regenerate everything but bones, and at one point he broke every bone in his body so the weapon X or whatever they would have called it, made a deal that he would work for them and they would replace (not coat) his bones with adamantium.

Didn’t see the movie, but from what i seen/heard I can’t say for sure that I will.

And i specially agree with those statements in the end. If someone don’t likes your work->Go to TGWTG.com, if that’s bad too-> search around on youtube! And if that’s not good enough still: Buy a bicycle and go on a trip! If the pope is right that’s why god made this planet after all.

Also: you publish your videos when ever you want, i don’t think that 5 sec/day is too costly for us, to check if you got something up or not. You have the right to enjoy life too! Now go and fight for it!… Ugh i mean use that right!

Sounds like they’ve fucked up the X-Men again.

I personally always thought the idea of mutation was a lot more plausible than a dude getting bit by a radioactive spider. Sure it was probably lazy, in fact I think Stan Lee said that in an interview once, but I always thought the basic idea of man evolving was logical. The problem comes with a lot of writers who don’t use it properly.

I was actually looking forward to this movie, mostly because I really love Deadpool… … … … And…. Actually, soon as I saw the poster my first reaction was “Wait, didn’t they say Deadpool was in this?”. Followed by realising that’s how he’d look. Followed by crying for a few minutes. Followed by the realisation that… “Yep, it’s all down-hill from here”.
    Followed by some more crying.
I’m probably still gonna watch it though, I mean it can’t be worse than Devil Times Five.
Which is my new term of measuring. Check that movie out btw, it’s… horrendous. Serious; I’d rather sit through Manos again. With Torgo kicking me in the balls for the duration.

I have two complaints with this review, Spoony.

First, you said that you didn’t understand why they bonded Wolverine’s skeleton with adamantium if he’s already ostensibly indestructible. They actually just wanted to see if it could be done and have the recipient survive the operation; Striker even said after it was finished to, “Get rid of him. We’ll use his DNA to make weapon eleven.”

Second, you expressed confusion over why Striker didn’t recapture Logan when he shot him. Before Striker got the chance to do anything, Silverfox “Took control” of his mind with her powers so she could make him “walk until his feet bleed.” He didn’t stop until he was picked up by the army. Besides, the whole point was never to keep Wolverine, anyway.

Everything else I pretty much agree with. There was an overabundance of green screen effects and plot holes abound. For example, Silverfox said she was working for Striker in exchange for the release of her sister. Why couldn’t she just influence Striker to let her sister go? Why do Logan and Victor keep fighting in all those wars? Wouldn’t it prove more lucrative to become gangsters, maybe form a traveling show of “The Men Who Can’t Be Killed?” If Remy LeBeau is a dyed-in-the-wool New Orleans gambler, why doesn’t he have much of an accent? I was expecting full-blown Cajun, instead we got generic Southern.

And seriously, adamantium bullets? What is he, a fucking werewolf?

I own most of the weapon X comics( minus one or two), the project was not to give wolverine claws. It was an independent project in order to create a super soldier, which is one of the reasons omega red(who has an synthetic adamantium called carbonadium) relates to wolverine. Beforehand all subjects exposed to the weapon X project had perished so they needed a mutant with regenerative powers who would be able to endure the stresses of coating bones with adamantium. Eventually they discovered logan and kidnapped him, finding him drunk outside of a bar one night and rendered him unconscious . Throughout the process logan was subjected to many extreme stresses and they attempted to make a “remote controlled killing machine” by erasing his memories and attempting to control his body via electronic stimuli but ultimate failed as his instincts took control and he began massacring people within the facility. Eventually he came after the head of the project but this man thought he had a trump card that would vaporize anyone in the room but logan’s regenerative powers proved to be even stronger than expected as he survived the blast that would kill most people, leaving him as a charred corpse that eventually regenerated. And the wolverine that we all know and love struck out into the wilderness on his own with no memories pertaining to the ordeal he had just experienced.

Personally i think the movie was good.
not outstanding, but good 75 percent scale good.
The action scenes were awesome, the admantium bonding the best Marvel movie scene i ever seen (this includes Hulk 2008 endfight).
The acting i liked very much, surprised of Will.I.Am’s performance,Taylor (Gambit) and Ryan reynolds
    Patrick Stewart cameo was awesome.

    Bad things
Plot wasn’t rounded up good enough.
    You didn’t use enough Deadpool.
Love story was OK, but did you really had to bring her back? Honestly?

I love that still frame on the video before you click play. It goes so well with how your talking about the poses. xD

    Equally, Dance Monkey, Dance!
Nah, though it’s nice to hear about new updates coming along, I knew it’d probably take a bit of time for new stuff anyway.

I personally thought the film was good; not perfect or spell-binding, but definitely /good/. This is coming from someone who hasn’t read a Marvel comic in a long time (I have no interest in seeing Joe Quesada rub his dick on everything), but yes I thought it was good. I personally saw the film as a prequel and a reboot, hence why some of the things that happened in the movie didn’t synch up with later movies.

I do agree with some of your points, especially how they turned Deadpool into Baraka, the inconsistencies of bringing the X-Men into the greater Marvel Universe (having the characters as having standalone continuities), the cheap CG, and others. But hey, I still enjoyed it, despite its flaws.

Oh, and regarding the brain-shot amnesia, my friend rationalized it as such: the adamantium bullet, being the only thing that could break the skeleton armour, hit the brain and effectively lobotomized Logan. When he regenerated, his brain repaired itself, but wiped his memory in the process. That’s not the best explanation, but it works for me.

One thing I will agree with you on wholeheartedly: Wolverine’s story is best left a secret, or at least unexplained. I would recommend looking up Steven Moffat’s comments about not divulging what happened in The Time War.

Take as long as you need Spoony, your videos are usually worth it, and your writing is pretty good. People who can’t see that don’t deserve to be your fans.

I actually liked the Wolverine movie, but I was never a huge XMen dude either. I always found the DC comics better, to be honest. Wolverine, I thought, was what it was: a fairly entertaining action movie that described how wolverine came about. In the end, that’s all. I can understand, though, why people wouldn’t like it. At least it better than Indiana Jones 4.

Good review. Basically because I agreed with it. The fact that they hired Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and yet didn’t really let him BE Deadpool is disappointing. Also, kid Wolverine was pretty hilarious.

There’s some sort of fetish for Wolverine as a character that I never entirely understood. Like you said; claws, regenerates and is a moody loner with a mysterious past, that’s it. I read a recent Slate article that listed what’s happened to his exes and he has like 11 dead girlfriends, wives, and/or fiancees! He’s just so alone in the world! He’s an Immortal (He has inside him, blood of kings!) Destined to love and lose forever! Maybe he uses those claws to relieve the pain. Down the arm, not across the wrist, Logan.

It’s funny that you liken the couple to Ma and Pa Kent since it seems like they were setting that scene as his “superhero” moment. So, of course, he meets a nice elderly couple and has a tender filial moment with them right before they DIE! ( I know he meets people who take care of him after he gets the tin bones in the comics, but did they really need to set them up like this?) I think this movie is part of a larger movement to make him more than he is. X-Men 3, this and that Wolverine and the X-men series have me convinced that pretty much everyone in superhero media is sorta gay for him. He just isn’t that interesting. He’s chock full of cliches and tropes, I sometimes wonder what makes him so special amongst the myriad other characters with the same characteristics.

I think, though, what the problem for me is, that he doesn’t stand for anything. I mean, what does he stand in opposition to? Alien invasions?, racism? (the catchall for any mutant character), shadowy government agendas? Umm… revenge? There are certain traits that true superheroes embody: Superman is Truth, Justice and the American way, Captain America is patriotism (in the best sense of the term). Wolverine doesn’t have that. He’s cool, I guess. But what else is there? Is there something that transcends him that can be told in other media and is best conveyed through his character? Not that I see.

I think I’ll have King Herod sum that last point up (I feel it appropriate since I’m sure wolverine’s died on the cross for our sins at some point):

I only ask what I’d ask any superstar.
What is it that you have got that puts you where you are.
I am waiting, yes I’m a captive fan.
I’m dying to be shown that you are not just any man.

“There’s some sort of fetish for Wolverine as a character that I never entirely understood.”

It’s actually pretty simple. It seems like every guy my age remembers that scene from the animated series where Wolverine goes on an epic temper tantrum in the Danger Room while Jean and Scott are getting married. A little hairy guy losing the girl to some preppy douchebag? *That* speaks to the soul of every nerd! :-P

Wolverine Origin was a crappy comic. It was not actually very faithful to the concept. For me it does not exist :D

I liked the movie. It really did a lot of things right. If you have read Wolverine comics from the time Larry Hama wrote it, then you’d understand :D

You know spoony… if you’re really selling those t-shirts you may get in a lot of trouble because you’re using a registered trademark. Final Fantasy IS square-enix’s property.

I’ve been thinking the same about the ads. You can legitimately use a registered trademark as long as you don’t get money out of it, otherwise you have to pay for a license.

You’re using video games that don’t belong to you after all.

I’m so glad other people had the same thoughts about the hole Superman’s parents thing. I to expected something along the lines of baby superman turning up. It was probably an inside joke considering that x-men 3 lost its director when he went to do superman returns.

With your point about the whole mutant thing being an excuse to do away with origin stories was actually Stan Lee’s point when he made them. I can’t remember where but there an interview with him where he says that he had a lazy day when coming up with a new comic series and basically said “fuck it i can’t be bothered to come up with some silly reason they have powers. Okay they are mutants that why.”.

They only reason Cyclops is in it is a half-hearted attempt for Hollywood to say “sorry we killed him”.

Actually in the comics he has bone claws, they just coated his bones in adamantium. Even he’s surprised he has bone claws. Here’s proof, http://www.loganfiles.com/wolgalery/75-1993-AdamKubert-Logan.jpg It was partially seen in X-men 3 when magneto attacked Logan.

    1. X-men works best in its own universe. The mutant hysteria thing begins to not make sense when you add in other Marvel characters.
    2. I HATE how Wolverine’s self-healing power has become absurdly over-powered. He shouldn’t be indestructible. Just strong, and with the ability to heal some wounds slowly.

I too grew up watching the animated series on Fox. I actually dug the love triangle. The fact that Cyclops ultimately came out on top never bothered me, though. It worked for both characters. Placing Wolverine into a stable relationship would have made him less of a wildcard, it also would prevent him from getting to cry on the inside (as all tough guys do). Cyclops is a stiff, aloof leader who is well, yes, a little douchey. But then again, so is Jean Grey; whenever she’s not possessed by some cosmic bird-god. Hot, yes, but cool and funny? Not really.

I think, in your breakdown of the audience demographic, you forgot to mention…. WOMEN!

You can tell this movie is aimed at drawing in the female audience from the trailers.

I mean, Hugh Jackman runs around naked in it for some scenes…. and the whole love story is an integral part to his so-called origins… in that (SPOILER) the girl and her faked death was supposed to have been a setup to do… whatever, I don’t even know really, but anyways, this movie is totally directed at the salivating female audience who want to see Jackmans ass and see him get all romantic with his girl… and those women don’t give a damn about the origins of x-men. Frankly, I’m not either, but that explains why it doesnt live up to comic book fans standards, it wasnt really marketed towards them… because it’s a given, that if you title something “x-men origins: wolverine”, obviously the comic book fans are gonna pay to see it, so those hollywood execs are more interested in bringing in any other potential audience.

I’m afraid this movie falls into that over-commercialized, cheaply-made drivel that is all too common in hollywood.

I like the movie. It was far, FAR better than X-Men 3 and most of what went on can be explained or was relatively close to the actual comics. There is a full explanation of how Deadpool has actually been set up to become his “proper” self on imdb.com, as well as why Victor Creed is human in this film, and beastly in X-Men 1. Regardless, the review was entertaining.

Spoiler. Deadpool DOES break the 4th wall if you wait till the end (and you’re lucky. Apparently there are different after credits). He shushes the audience…

I do still feel like they did him dis justice, though not for the reasons everyone is all upset about. Wade is supposed to seek out help to cure his cancer… not get turned into a mind zombie. It’d have been nice if he had more depth.

You hit the nail on the head. At times the CGI was not even all that good. One scene had logan run over by a car and you could tell it was graphics. It was just a computer outline. Who in the hell was editing that. I think you should edit the next X men origins movie, spoony. At least then its going to be good.

@Will – You know what? Suck my dick. “Women!!11!1″ isn’t the reason why the movie sucks, and I’m sure there are thousands of women who “give a damn about the origins of X-Men” and were just as pissed off as everyone else. And anyway, don’t even try to whine about female-oriented fanservice when you could pretty much walk into a rental store, close your eyes, grab a movie off a shelf and find at least one thin, attractive woman who is only thrown in to give the lead male a love interest and the male audience something to wank to.

I am a huge wolvie fan and unfortunately every word rings true this is a slapped together piece of crap,You need a TC show already lets hijack G4 and put spoony on 24/7 we’ll intravenously feed him adrenaline and caffeine so he can stay up and review games (sounds like a plot for CRANK 3: World Of Warcraft )

Well lets see…. I’ve never thought about mutants that way before now… But now I do.
Wolverine was the only one with character for me for a long time. (Save the the Animated Series Gambit. He was pimpin’~!) and I think the Anti-Hero movement was his creation. In any case, having you say they fuck-up DeadPool is enough of a reason for me not to go. I know Watchmen was really kinda meh ( ‘I’ Liked it enought to watch it again) but this just looks like crap.
Thanks for the words of warning my good Spoony~!

I did go and see this one in the theater with my wife, her cousin and our mutual friend; and we all liked it… for the most part. I do agree that they screwed up Deathpool big time, no doubt about it. When he met his end the way he did, I couldn’t believe it. Not that I was a big deadpool fan but I knew enough about him to know that wasn’t really him on the screen.

As for the big heroic poses, I didn’t really notice them (I guess I just accept them as normal for this type of film). But when you mention it, it really doesn’t make a lot of sense does it; just go and fight.

All in all, I really enjoyed the review; you made me laugh and even made me think about the stuff that I didn’t catch the first time out. Just keep doing what your doing and don’t let any of the haters tell you different. Thank you again for keeping the net fun and intelligent.

I really like Spoony Experiment, but this post has to do with his questioning the adamantium treatment
    *Nerd Alert*
The reason they gave Wolverine adamantium bones is because the only this his healing factor cannot heal is bones. So its great that he can regenerate all his soft tissue, but if his skeletal structure is done, he can’t even stand up :p

I have to say that everything you say was was right…except for deadpool in the movie timeline wise it was spot on Wade wasn’t ugly until he got his regenrative factor so technicaly he didn’t have it at the beginning of the movie so it was a pre scarred , pre Deadpool Wade Wilson

Weapon Xl on the other hand was a bit odd but it make sense…think about how else will they give him a regenrative factor and make him psychologically and physically messed up…that’s right by expirimenting on him… if they can git rid of the baraka blades and cyclops laser vison then they can make a spin off

I’ve always loved the X-Men. The idea for them is pointing out prejudice and being singled out for being different. Everyone loves characters like Wolverine and Solid Snake because they’re anti-heroes.
I remember Blob from the TV show. I always facepalmed when I saw him as a kid.
He doesn’t “develop” powers. He was created. His skeleton was replaced with adamantium.
The other thing about the X-Men is how Good and Bad aren’t so clean cut. Magneto and Mystique aren’t always the bad guys. Everyone has a unique personality and people can relate to them.
I’d love to see you and Linkara argue about the X-men. But when it comes to DC vs. Marvel, I’ll always be on the Marvel side. With the exception of Watchmen, Marvel seems to show great personality with their characters and they’re balanced. They’re not just like Superman who pretty much has no personality whatsoever. Marvel chars have 3 dimensional personas. It’s not all about how great superpowers are and shows how they’re indisputably heroes. Powers are responsibilities and take time to control in the Marvel universe.
Gambit doesn’t have a southern accent. He has a Cajun accent. Idk why, but I’ve always thought Cajun accents are sexy as oppose to Southern accents.
I completely agree with you about the amnesia thing. It’s along with aliens as the modern deus ex machina.
You’re not very good with suspension of disbelief, are you? They’re comic books! And sci-fi! The whole point is suspension of disbelief!

That logic for the adamantium works in the comic books, but right at the start of the film you see Wolfy getting blasted by all kinds of shit with barely a grimace; clearly his bone structure isn’t an issue. At best adamantium just reduces the amount of time it takes for him to heal-up; well worth the effort on Stryker’s part? I think not.

“If you’re wondering how he eats and breathes, and other science facts… just repeat to yourself it’s just a show… I SHOULD REALLY JUST RELAX!”

Wolverine wasn’t a terrible movie because the science was silly (although it was indeed silly), Wolverine was a terrible movie because it was pointless, and boring.

It was a shining example of why I generally don’t give these studios my money anymore. I generally go to the theater less than twice per year these days, and other than missing Watchmen, I don’t even miss it.

Do yourself a favor. Next time you’re tricked into seeing a movie, check out who the director, producer, and studio is… then avoid their movies in the future.

The “good” movies don’t even play in my hometown of almost 50,000 people (not a single 2008 best picture candidate played here). I’d have paid to see “The Wrestler” a half dozen times.

Long time viewer. Been watching your webshow for a couple years now I think.
Dont like to post cus I know you probably wont read it but I wanted to say thanks for this one actually. I had heard from unreliable sources that they screwed this movie up and you basically confirmed it is true.
The XMen movies have always been a disservice to the fans (kind of like the resident evil movies which can be argued shouldnt have been made in the first place) and I heard they really did no justice to Gambit which immediately made me sad; I really wanted to see his first movie appearance done right. Of course, I shouldnt be surprised considering they mess everything else up.
Anyway keep doing what you do Spoony, you dont have to rush anything while I was worried you wouldnt make anymore videos cus of whatever reasons you had I know its free entertainment and I would never expect you to do anything because the children whine for it. Dont give in to that, the internet is a breeding ground for whiners, have to learn to ignore ‘em. You probably already know that though. Eh anyway, keep doing the great stuff you do, i look forward to another episode whenever it gets posted…. Seriously, dude, no rush.

Not many people are mentioning the BIGGEST Fuck up: Adamantium is INDESTRUCTABLE … so it won’t even dent by the mere power of a gun: It doesn’t matter what material the bullet is, it’ll still only transfer the amount of force it was given when it took off from the gun.
    THE BULLET WILL BOUNCE OFF.

Spot on review, but you didn’t hit on one of my main problems with the film. If Wolverine got amnesia from an adamantium bullet, then how did Sabretooth get amnesia? Cause he damn sure didn’t seem to know Wolverine in the first X-Men movie. This movie was just fucked up all the way around!

I heard about Gambit being involved i thought “ooooh kaaay . They better do this well.”
I heard Emma Frost was going to be in it I thought “whu?… ok . I’ll let that pass.”

And wasn’t Wolvereen’s amnesia caused by im repressing the painful memories as soon as he escaped the lab? . . . I am sorely dissapointed at this movie and I havn’t even seen it yet.

I figured that Stryker would have captured Wolverine after he killed Silverfox. Not completely sure why he found the need to kill her, though.

I liked the movie for what it was. It has its flaws, and it’s not as good as the first two X-Men movies, but I thought it was better than the third one.

I didn’t like the explanation for his amnesia though. It was as if someone just remembered that he had to lose his memory when they were filming the third act and pulled the “adamantium bullets to the head” explanation out of their asses. They could’ve had Stryker recapture him and wipe his memory and added a final scene where he escapes into the wild again. They could’ve had Kayla turn out to be evil and have her wipe his memory at the very end. They could’ve had just about anything else happen that would’ve been so much more satisfying than, “BANG BANG!!! Now you don’t know who you are anymore! HA HA!!!”

I wasn’t a fan of the comics and I STILL enjoyed the movie!
ITS CALLED ORIGINS WOLVERINE! So it means we will follow wolverine as he meets each of these characters.
And remember that wolverine can live for a LONG time. (He fought through all the wars) Its a good movie. I’d give it a chance.

I though that the movie was nice. Not great, but not bad.
It also had multiple after credits endings (depending to which theatre you went). One of which have the REAL deadpool pick up the ugly bastards head. So it seems it was a fake Deadpool in this movie.

There are already talks about X-Men Origins Wolverine 2, which will take place in Japan…..

  • Mistah J

There are probable explanations for some of your complaints. Just so you know, I never was much of an X-men fan. I never watched the shows, yet I really liked X2 and Wolverine.

You mentioned why would they try to make Logan indestructible if he already was indestructible. Well, just having bones for protection won’t keep his organs intact. His brain could be squished or his head chopped off, and that would keep him from regenerating. But with adamantium, neither can possibly happen.

That thing about Stryker shooting Logan and just walking off, well, I don’t think that’s what happened. I seem to remember that when Stryker shot Logan twice in the head, he went over to Silverfox and was going to shoot her but she used her hypnosis on him first. I don’t think he intended to just leave Logan, but remember, it’s not like there was too much he could’ve done with the whole base in ruins. Stryker wanted Logan’s memory erased anyway. Maybe he was intending to feed Logan false information when he woke up with no memory. Also, if Logan’s soul mate is bleeding to death, I don’t think he’s going to be paying much attention to his surroundings, even with his heightened senses.

And finally, the adamantium bullets erasing his memory. As I recall, I didn’t see any holes in the back of Logan’s head and I didn’t see anything fall out of the holes in the front of his head. Therefore, the only explanation is that those bullets are still in his brain. I don’t think it should be too hard to understand why that would damage someone’s memory. You should also remember that the brain is a bit more complicated that the rest of the body. Sure, Logan’s brain tissue may regenerate but I don’t think you should assume that his memories would regenerate with them.

Overall Spoony, I think you’re not putting enough thought into certain aspects of this movie, and you’re putting too much thought into others. I’ll agree with the stuff you said in the beginning, the stuff about mutants, which is basically why I never watched much of the cartoon. However, I think the movies (except X-men 3) did a rather good job of telling the story in a different way, and I think Wolverine was a pretty good movie.

I am impressed with how deep Spoony commented about the Marvel universe, mentioning Punisher, Daredevil, Wolverine in WW2, etc etc.

I agree with most of what he said. I was highly entertained so 5/5 .I feel somewhat nerdy for knowing everything that he was talking about, lol.

Well, I’m sure that other people have mentioned this but in other comics like Spider Man or The Incredible Hulk they are usually the exeption. The creater wonted to have a world where a segnificant portion of the population (though still being a minority ) had superpowers. It wasn’t really plasable to have everyone dumped into a vat of nuklier wast. I guess they could have made it a deseas or something but that would have the same “through away” story. I think it works fine. I mean it’s a staple in fantasy storys some people are born with magic in them and others are born mundaim. What is wrong with that?

I jenerally thought Wolvereen was less psychotic than the Punisher

Hang on, wasn’t Syclops one of the teachers at the school in the first X-Men movie?

Deadpool was the Villan? I thought he was more like the “big gun” as opposed to an actual character at the end. I mean he bearly had anything to do with the movie, even when he could speak he bearly said anything.

Also, Wolvereen has had his amnesia for a loooong time.

About the bone claws and the admantium bowns, I have to say that kind of bothered me too. I thought he got the claws when he got his bones replaced. I have to say that I prefer if he had of just been a healer as his mutant power. Though I don’t think he wasn’t really indestructable before he had the bone transplant. He could just take a lot more punnishment than anyone else. Like if he had of been compleatly crushed or decapitated that would have been enough but most people would just shoot or stab him and think that was enough.

I have to say I didn’t really like Watchmen that much, I mean it wasn’t crap, it was ok.

I supose I am only a fan of the show from the 90′s. This isn’t hate mail, I’m just stating my opinion. ^_^

I am a long time fan of the comic series and sadly I was disappointed by the movie. Not so much as the Wolverine story mind you, but the toss in of my two favorite characters and how poorly they were portrayed and yes I am talking about Gambit and Deadpool. I agree with everything you said about Deadpool, but my little rant is about Gambit in particular, it’s a shame that they couldn’t even get his eyes right (the whole red on black that he is famous for) and the actor, while good looking enough to play the Cajun, was just that, his accent didn’t strike me as well… cajun. If he was thrown in for fanservice, I think it’s a good idea to make it so the fans will like him…

Glad to hear you like Punisher – The End. I was actually kinda annoyed when i heard Linkara hates everything by Garth Ennis, cos i think his punisher series was awesome.
And just to save me having to leave a comment on another page, i’ll just add now that on the final mission of SWAT 4 you should take the secondary entrance, cos Jackson tells you you’re in his spot before gameplay even starts, thought you’d love that.

First I am huge Deadpool fan. And i do not agree about he being a running joke. Yes he brakes the Fourth Wall(in plain word he know that he is in comic book) all the time and he jokes all the time, but that is part of maybe one of the best Marvel characters.
Deadpool is realy fucked up in this movie. The sole reason why i like this character is because just how insane he is. Plus the point of Deadpool is that he is also product of Weapon X but he is product of different departament and never was ment to be their main subject. He was severly tortured and went insane before his healing factor (taken from Wolverine) kinks in and he escapes. His origin story is actualy better than Wolverines, furst because it isn’t streched in time and secound because he is realy much more 3 dimentional than more of the Marvel characters. He is never perfectly evil nor pefectly good. He is just a guy who got his ass handed to him by fate and went realy bitter about live and trust.
Plus his name: Deadpool comes from a gambling game which he and the other failed experiments played. They put bets about who will die next and Wade Wilson (that is his “real” name (actualy it isn’t)) was on the to because of his cancer and rebelios behavior.

If they make Wolverine Origins 2 they shoud put X 23 in it. It will be real fun watching Wolverine fighting his female clone.
And for all who don’t know who X 23 is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-23

I liked the movie. It was stupid but still enjoyable. I read tons and tons of comics as a kid, but y’know what? I don’t really care about continuity. It changes so frequently in the source canon itself that I don’t mind when the movies shuffle it all around. I mean, the comic writers don’t care about continuity, so why should I get all hung up over whether the films change things?

Having said that, I never liked the mysterious nature of Wolverine’s origin. I just never was intrigued. Spoony (rightly) complains about how mutants can all too easily be used as an excuse to plug in any random superpower without providing a concrete origin. A mutant’s origin can be interesting only when they set up and show how it is these once-normal people suddenly deal with being different, unique, and outcast. Well, Wolverine just seemed to me like an excuse to dump all these “cool” and “interesting” tidbits about a past without having to actually string them all together into a cohesive whole. Jerry wants to write about Wolverine in the Civil War? Great, let him! Sam wants to show a few panels with Wolverine in World War 1? Go to town; it’s not like they actually knew what they were doing with the guy anyway.

Having said that, I didn’t mind they did with Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds was funny with the proper attitude and I think I’m looking forward to the potential spinoff. Let’s run down the differences, shall we?

Yes, Ryan Reynolds is a pretty boy. But by the end he’s disfigured. So does it really matter if Deadpool started handsome so long as he ends ugly? I don’t think so.

Yes, they give Deadpool lots of weird powers. But a couple of them, like the healing factor and teleportation, weren’t changes, and the guy already had an origin as a test subject, so it’s not that big an extrapolation to just pile things onto him. Besides, they’ll probably think of (likely dumb) reasons to take away the optic blasts. As much as I enjoyed the Deadpool scenes in this movie, that was a bit much.

He’s not insane in the movie, but they set this up via his activation procedure being rushed. This isn’t confirmed, so it’s still speculation on my part, but considering they were already thinking of spinning him off before Wolverine was released why else would they add in that part if they weren’t setting it up for a later payoff? So does it really matter if it’s his regeneration or a botched experiment that drives him insane? Either way he’s insane due to scientific meddling.

I don’t care much about the inconsistencies between Wolverine and the X-Men movies vis a vis Striker’s accent and Sabretooth’s muteness. They got good actors for them for Wolverine; it would’ve been foolish to try and get Striker to force a southern accent or to get a worse actor who could duplicate Brian Cox’s accent. And Liev Schreiber did a fine job with Sabretooth. I also like to pretend Sabretooth wasn’t in the first movie, so to me there’s no inconsistency. Hooray for selective memory!

These are comics, people. They can be fun. They can occasionally be insightful. But they’re not the Ten Commandments written in stone. One of their greatest strengths–and weaknesses–is that someone down the road can change the story.

Now, if they screw up Deadpool by making it not fun (I personally want to see him weeping over the grave of Bea Arthur), then I invite you all to beat me about the head and shoulders with a tire iron. Okay?

Eah i know it all in the name of some mindless fun, but thats exatcly. Deadpool was fun without them trying to make him be fun. We take glimse of that in the begining but later on…. plus yes it matter how Deadpool is deffigured cuz basicly his cancer is the reason why he agreed to allow experiments and by time the cancer was pretty much in its final stages. And being srewd over the deal is important expirience for Deadpool cuz it teaches him that live is a bitch and she wants him to suffer.
Oh just leave it I know i am acting like absolute fanboy but atleast i only do it for this one character. So its ok.

Nah, if he’s your favorite character then I can understand getting upset over changes like that. It took me a while to get used to the idea of Nightcrawler disfiguring himself in the name of religion, and even now I basically ignore that aspect of X2 in favor of the mind-meltingly awesome assault on the White House.

But in the movie, you still get some of those aspects you spoke of in Deadpool’s character. No, it’s not cancer, but he does (presumably) get captured by Sabretooth and Striker and forced into being Weapon XI. So you could still say that he’s going to be bitter about being transformed and mind controlled. Although that does leave open the fact that we never get to see Sabretooth take out Deadpool…cos I think I like Deadpool in that fight. Also, what’s with them just casually saying, “Oh yeah, Blob’s dead.” I mean they’re basically saying, “Hey, do you like the idea of a violent deathmatch between a superhuman with claws and a giant fat man who can laugh off tank shells? Well SCREW YOU, we’re not gonna show you that!”

Hey Spooney, listen, I just want to say that I am half and half on this one. Many things you said, I totally agree with, and finally, there is someone who agrees with me that the concept of Mutation is a lazy excuse to not tell an origin story! I like the X-Men characters, and I always liked Wolverine, only for the fact that my entire life, I was more the Clark Kent type growing up; complete opposite of Logan’s personality. You totally hit that scene on the ball with the old couple that take Wolverine in, I swore they ripped that Ford truck shot of the couple straight out of Richard Donner’s classic, and that Clark’s space-ship was gonna come tumbling down in the corn-fields beside them. The writers might as well had Logan put on a Smallville Highschool tee. Lol. Overall, I thought the movie was okay, I read about Logan’s origin story back about ten years ago when researching characters, and the origin had been put together over the thirty years that Shanty Claws has been smokin’ cigars and tearing villians a new one. I never read any X-Men comics in the 90s, so I didn’t know how much of the extra mutants they screwed up. I did know enough to identify them, and Gambit was a character that, like Nightcrawler, I waited too long to see him among the other movies’ universe. And speaking of Gambit, I was totally pissed in the original X-Men films, that they hooked up Rogue with Iceman. That never happened in the comics as far as I know, and she was supposed to be in love with Gambit in the first place. I thought Will.I.Am (the lead singer of Black Eyed Peas, for those commenting who didn’t recognise him), did a fair acting job in his character. Continuity with the extra characters was screwed up even further than they were in the first movies, but then again, It was 20thCenturyFox that made the films, and when I heard the first movie was coming out and released through Fox, I immediately had a premonition that they were going to screw the whole legend up, that they were not going to be faithful to the comics. Fox is also responsible for screwing up Dragonball Evolution, and Fox is, to put it simply, is the kind of studio that just capitalizes on desperate fans, who are yelling, screaming, petitioning, and demonstrating to see their favorite franchises, they usually with comic book films, just through random inconsistent shit together and let it loose on hapless medium fans. Good review. One thing about wolverine, I didn’t really watch the x-men show or anything but I had some recorded eps. at home when I was younger and most of them actually centered around wolverines past and it was ALWAYS hinted that the claws came AFTER/same time that he got his admantium skeleton. I think they should have made it that way in the movie too.
Regarding this movie, I actually tried the demo for the wolverine game released in conjunction with this movie and it blew me away, you should try it out:D.
I also agree with christian a couple of comments before me on that last part. Keep making great vids ;D

While i agree that the whole bone claws thing is a little goofy–especially since I grew up with it pretty much stated that Wolverine never had anything like that at any time–it’s still less goofy than the adamantium claws. Of all the things that Weapon X could’ve given him or done with that extra metal, why claws?

“Men, we have here a man who can heal from almost any injury. We’re going to exploit this fact in order to make his skeletal structure indestructible, thus increasing his resilience even more. He’s going to be able to withstand almost any punishment thrown at him. Oh, and we’re going to give him claws. It’ll be kinda like he has sais coming out of the back of his hands, but with the blades all of equal length, cos that’ll look cooler. There are going to be these little slides in his arm that will guide the claws up and down his forearm. Thankfully we’ll still be able to install all of that in the proper places via the drilling syringes. They’re going to be pretty massive, too, but you won’t be able to tell they’re there just by looking at his arms. Because…yeah.”

Seriously, how does that make sense? I enjoy the end results, believe me, but it’s just one of those things that doesn’t really jive.

Agree- not going to watch the movie though I waited for a while for it….Some stills with the film was enough to turn me off, and when I heard news of it, I knew I was going to be disappointed.
I like the X-men thing, but I agree…waaaaay too many mutants. XD
Those who say Batman…yeah- but then there’s Rorschach.

Hey Spoony – as always, great review, you always manage to make really enjoyable videos even if I don’t always agree with your views on a movie or such, which is only normal and healthy. Here I agree with everything you said, except maybe the bit where you mentioned that if you are a fan of Wolverine you may like the movie – well, I don’t exactly disagree because you’re not making a point, just making a guess, but I’m here to tell you that I think the movie is even worse if you’re a fan. I’ve always been big on X-Men and Wolverine in particular was my favorite, so this movie was extremely disappointing to me. Bah.

All in all, great work :)

Hey Spoony, funny review but I disagree, Wolverine (while being a popcorn film with all the depth of a tuna fish sandwich) was a lot of fun. I loved the open sequence, the actors were all all great (Wolverine was awesome as always, I mean who doesn’t like Wolverine he’s the coolest hero out there), the soundtrack was bad ass and action scenes were downright wicked, I mean that is what a movie like X-Men is going to be about. If you’re expecting symmetry watch Kubrick or Coen brothers. Movies like this and Star Trek require some massive amounts of suspension of disbelief or quite simply you’re not going to enjoy them as they are packed full of plot holes (plenty of full for the critical fire!), but I’m surprised that a guy with your imagination would be put off by that. Anyway thanks for the review it was good stuff!

Oh yeah, and to all you jerk offs that stole the movie off the internet, man it must suck to be a sniveling coward like you. What would your moms think of you if they knew you were a thief and a coward? I bet they’re wishing right now they’d had that abortion. See ya chumps. karmatically yours.

Really? Okay, let’s start by tearing down your retarded review. If a movie forces you to make stuff up for you to understand it, it is not a well written plot. A movie shouldn’t have to explain everything for you to make sense of the plot. I honestly liked this movie, but hafabee, you are the kind of person that needs to be punched in the balls so your stupidity can’t carry on to the next generation. And you basically made your comment sound exactly like a fanatical rant by offering exactly no information on why you are saying this. No movie should require a “suspension of disbelief.” A good movie draws you into the plot, keeps you there, and makes you walk out of the movie thinking “ah crap, I have to come back to reality.”
The next thing we should tear down is your second paragraph. Again, really? I get the fact that pirating stuff is bad, but to comment on this website about that? Really? All you did was sound like a total retard. And no parent would wish they’d gotten an abortion because someone downloaded a ten dollar movie. You are honestly the most retarded person I have seen post on a video. You even beat JustinBieberOwnsAll.

Hey Spoony. Again I felt compelled to write to you because you’ve got some things completely wrong.
I think the first time was when you said that Hitman game series suck and they have no story, which is wrong. I wanted to comment to you on that, but I just thought you’d point your finger at me and call me fanboy, even I wouldn’t considre myself as one, but fine. I thought someone must’ve told you about the story already if you hadn’t played all of the hitman series or something and missed the story of it.
Second time must’ve been when I read/watched your dark knight review where you said that if people hadn’t known who harwy dent is, stop watching batman movies, which kind of leads me to this comment:
I haven’t read a single x-men or badman comic. Ever. Pertty much the only comics I have read are calvin and hobbes and Donald Duck when I was a kid. Marvels stuff never was big where I live (Finalnd) and you couldn’t see any of those comics where I live. Yet, according to this video and others you have made, I hadn’t seen any of the x-men movies because I don’t know anything about them, nor I could’ve watched Batman, because I hadn’t read the comics and didn’t know the background of the characters.
I did watch the x-men movies and enjoyed them. I knew the characters from cartoon we jokingly watched as kids with my friends. I knew batman from the re-runs of the old series and the cartoon show.

It’s also worth mentoning that Im fan of the Blade movies, even they had their shitty bits, later I found out it was a character in comics. I haven’t to this day read a single comic of the blade character.

Hey Spoony long time lisener first time commenter. I agree with what you said about the movie and how most of the appeal of Wolverine was how no one knew where he came from or much about him but when you were talking about how they fucked up Deadpool you forgot a big part. They stitched his mouth shut! I’ll admit that i don’t know alot about Deadpool but i do know that hes “The Merc With The Mouth” after watching the moive it seems to me that they are going to do numerous spin-offs with Gambit and some of the other mutants show cased in this movie but if they do make a movie about Deadpool how is it going to work when they closed his mouth in this one? I’ve always been on the side lines when it comes to Marvel’s more underground and non-mainstream characters but the way that the set up all of the possible movies that will more then likly come out of this I think they just set themselves up for another failure.

    Dear Spoony,

Hi, longtime watcher, third time poster. I think everybody thought Wolverine met Ma and Pa Kent. Everywhere I look, people talk about crashed alien baby probes and what not.

My biggest issue with this movie was how tame Wolverine was. The biggest draw was “Wolverine unleashing the beast,” but he was actually very tame. The only time he unleashed anything was when he was streaking.

Yeah, try getting that image out of your head.

    Sincerely,
    Ben

P.S. Where the hell was Gambit’s accent?

I cared about X-Men. I loved the cartoons, loved the comics.

Then they made these goddamn films.

Fuck you X-Men Movies! Stop changing our characters! We want that god-awful black and yellow suit that Wolverine wears, we want blue tights with yellow armor and a red visor, we want green and yellow to clash on people’s boobs that are the size of their head, we want Purple and Red on every evil character and the only time they wear normal clothes is when they aren’t beating shit up!

And for gods sake I hope someone gets the movie rights to Deadpool so that they can pretend this movie never existed and do it properly.

    • Anonymous

i like how passionate you are about your opinion, but you have to remember there are some things that works on the pages that would never look right on screen. like Galacticus in Fantastic Four 2, Spider-Man’s web-shooters, and, worst of all, the X-Men’s yellow spandex suits. plus, all the movies are just adaptations of the character. they cant make a character exactly as he/she is portrayed in a comic because there wouldnt be any new elements to facinate the viewer. does that make sense?

Only thing I'll disagree on is the bones. The adamantium made it so that he was Tonka Tough©. Sure, he could regenerate from anything, but his bones couldn't support any more than a normal guy. Afterwards he was pretty much indestructable. Plus him just getting metal claws doesn't make a lot of sense, but having claws that are coated makes more considering the skeleton. But all semantics, this movies blows.

I still occasionally crack-up remembering the stupid logic behind Stryker use of adamantium bullets. “His brain will heal but his memories will not”has to be one of the most moronic lines of all time.Outside of that XMO;W will completely fade in to its' own' mediocrity.

That bit with the claws in the bathroom, I'm so glad you picked up on that too. My jaw dropped when I saw how baaaaaad those effects were in that particular scene. It's like Jackman moves his hands and the CGI claws don't even move so there's this weird delay…jeez…

But yeah, film's pretty average. Love the X-Men though.

I watched this movie with very little knowledge of the source material except I had the action figures and watched the cartoons a bit, though I enjoyed it. I agree with the problems with the deadpool incarnation however (and don't dennouce me as a clueless fool) I had never heard of the character until quite recently.

A good thing to do when watching this movie is turn of the critic glasses get completely shit faced and forget all you know about common sense, x-men and cenimatography, and just watch the pissed of scruffy bastard beat seven shades of shit outta every sorry sonuvabitch who comes within' a mile of him!

i loved this movie. Y I LOVED IT…I ON ACCEDED SAW THE VERSION THAT HAD NO SPECIAL EFFECTS. it was awesome to see all these actors with strings and safety bags behind them and they are still acting the weapon X is the shit. when he is in this suit that is cheesy as fuck. there was a point in the movie where one of the guys…i don’t remember the name of the dud…is at the window of a school and puts his hand on the window and his claws grow…well the film just had a marker right on the screen CLAWS GROW and nothing happens but the guy who sees it is freaking out about nothing. i guess it is why you call it acting. Even though this movie was one of the dumbest way’s to deal with Wolverine’s origin, but when it comes to the brain…. it may be a huge deus ex machina, but the idea that brain cells that hold memories may have bearing, because there are ways to damage that part of your brain, to take away long term memories… but yeah, suspension of disbelief is something that I can do a little more than others, but hey, I didn’t buy it on DVD, but I did see it in theatres and liked it.

    Oh god Deadpool.
I adore him and I when I saw what they did….I tried to fool myself into thinking that maybe he got really badly hurt and got his arms amputated and his head cut off…((A common occurrence.)) But it does not work… I love Dealpool because for one thing he is fugly. He is not the pretty boy hero, he is the “Merc with a Mouth.” He has terrible qualities but he is funny. He also does yes, think in two different voices.
Also…for an inside joke. Meat Suit.

it doesn’t matter if the characters were exact. its an adaptation. it’s an alternate x men universe. they’re made all the time, sometimes with radical changes, like an alternate world where the marvel characters become zombies. theres even a DC comics alternate world where the Joker is one of the greatest heroes.

Your opinion on the X-Men being an excuse for an easy excuse for their powers is quite astute. Stan Lee has admitted that he was having a hard time coming up with stories of how his heroes got their powers, so why not be born with powers?

Movie was..iffy, but the game based on it was passable. Might want to look into it, if only because it does Wolverine better than any other X-Men game. And this is from a guy who played the old Sega Genesis X-Men game.

They screwed it up with the first one and I called it out. Where the fuck was gambit? Why was rouge with iceman? The little details in the movies is where they screwed up. At least hugh jackman got wolverines character spot on though.

i saw a very early bootleg of this movie months before it was released in theatres. it was before they had added any big budget CGI and had stand-in shots saying what SFX went were. and even before the special touches this movie was abysmal! i heard that guy who leaked the movie worked on the film and got jail time, and i thought he did us all a great service. by letting us see such a rough cut of the film, he let us know how un-save-able this crap fest was, is, and forever shall be. this movie blew chunks! a wolverine movie is NOT that hard to pull off, until you make it pg-13. then it becomes trite and silly.

also, spoony’s mutant power is being able to strike a silly pose on a chair.  lulz

with adamantium bones you can punch trough walls not so much with bone bones for however that makes sense.

and him being a regenering kind of mutant it makes sense that the brain tissue would be new cells who didnt have the old memories, agree with most of the review though nice chair pose xD

Uhh…no, it doesn’t. That’s why it’s called REgeneration, not generation. You revitalize existing cells, you don’t create new ones.

This movie sucked for explaining anything, and makes literally no sense with any of the X-men characters.

god I should stop smoking, regenerating*

While the Wolverine movie was pretty bad, I still think Last Stand was worse. Wolverine I could at least enjoy; Last Stand was a trainwreck almost from the beginning.

And I’m sure I’m far from the first to say it, but Wolverine was not “indestructible” by any means, even WITH adamantium  — or at least, he wasn’t in the 70s when he was introduced. Hell, I remember one of the early X-Men comics he was in involved the team being dropped out of a plane by an enemy, and there was dramatic tension over the fact that there weren’t enough fliers to grab everybody, with it being said explicitly that Wolverine would not survive that kind of fall.

As for the movie, I didn’t have a problem with Deadpool being a “pretty boy” — as I recall, in the comics, he’s ugly due to what Weapon X did to him. The stuff with him later being some ridiculous superweapon with his mouth sewn shut… will, that was just dumb. Also, I don’t see a problem with the method of giving Wolverine amnesia… except what it does to his skull. Either it made neat little holes in his skull, in which case he would heal but those parts of his skull would now be just bone; or the metal would bend in the direction of the bullet, in which case he should have little pieces of metal sticking out of the front of his head. As for why Stryker left him behind, it’s been a while, but I thought the chick with hypnotic powers made him leave.

The reason, in my opinion, that they hated mutants for their powers and not Spider-man or Hulk is because their powers aren’t genetic. They came from another source, be it the spider bite or gamma radiation or even the super soldier serum. But because the mutants powers are genetic and are our fault (normal people), they’re feared and hated against because they’re still normal people in a sense but different.

And Deadpool is supposed to be normal looking before the experiments that gave him his extreme healing factor, hideous looks, and insanity.

I swear to God, I thought the exact same thing about the farmers.   I was costantly thinking the guy was going to say something like “Goddammit, all these weird things at the same time!  First that baby in a rocket and now this guy!”

  • Arsenal Of Megadeath

i couldnt watch this for two reasons: the blob was nrver in the weapon x program, and gambit, fuck him, and ryan reynolds.

  • Stefan S. Bygg

Yeaah.. They did pretty much rape Deadpool in that movie.
Okay, if this is before his Cancer and all that.. Where are his gun? Yeah the guy has skills with the Katana and all, but that is really a last resort/ close combat weapon. In the comics, he will try and shoot you as many times as possible.. Because he has a gun. or blow you up.. Or burn you..
Anyway, they did rape the living hell out of him at the end. I mean wtf, did Uwe Boll take over the filming for dose scenes? Laser eyes..And his mouth is stitched together?.. F[Beep] you movie. And you Try and make it better, by “giving us” the Deadpool mask when he shoots laser for the first time, and his face get burns like his mask.. F you movie!

    Good review Spoony :)

  • hellmasterjoleck
