The Spoony Experiment

Dirty Harry: The War Against Drugs (NES) Review

by Spoony on May 8, 2009 · View Comments

Bite-sized version is here.

The city is in chaos. A new drug lord has taken over, flooding the streets with Colombian cocaine. It’s not safe to set foot outside your door because of the roving gangs of lawless, heavily-armed, desperate criminals. Heck, it’s not even safe inside your door because of a sudden, cataclysmic plague of deadly, coked-up snakes infesting the city tenements!

Only Harry Callahan can put an end to this crime wave. He’s officially off the case, but trust me, he’s had it with these motherf*cking snakes in this motherf*cking game.

Edit: Sorry that the mouse pointer is visible in many of the shots. I was a little surprised by it myself.

I do use an emulator to capture footage, and the save states are invaluable in getting specific moments, but actually you would have seen the mouse pointer even if I’d gone the other route and recorded straight off the console. Weird, I know, but the video capture software I use for both has advanced to the point where it will record the pointer and pull-down menus. It can be a little annoying for console games, but it might have made Phantasmagoria a little more interesting.

Anyway, I regret the mistake, but not enough to play the game again to get more footage. ;)

I can’t believe other people have played this shit ass game! And yes, I NEVER knew about that jumping nonsense. Grade A rant, Spoon

I loved it when you went:
SURPRISE!! SHITTY NES GAME =D=D=D
Laughed my ass of on that one.

Heroesrock09 May 10, 2009 at 4:27 am

Dude, why u buy these crappy games? Your just making yourself suffer. And it’s funny too.
And that is one horrible game. Urgh.
But its retro what do ya expect…Cool vid. And ST movie remake thingy is ace. I agree

Yuki May 10, 2009 at 5:23 am

NES controller and playing with a PC? :))

Scott 'Zeus' Christian May 10, 2009 at 7:32 am

Ha, classic. When you began to peter off into a bizzare rant (that sounded eerily like Dr. Insano), I couldn’t stop laughing. Those had to be the worst level designs ever. I’m curious to know if you hate games that use “pitfalls” such as lava, bottomless pits, deadly water (that’s clearer than most REAL bodies of water), and swamps. I fucking hate swamps. That shit totally ruined MediEvil for me…

But I digress. I noticed you were using emulation; which is pretty much the best way to get footage (as you said). I use emulators to find new NES games to purchase; or to play games I’ll never get the chance to play/buy. That and I’m working on my own review for a somewhat infamous N64 game.

Looking forward to the next SWAT and Final Fantasy VIII videos! It was also awesome seeing you on the TGWTG 1 Year video.

Schwere Viper May 10, 2009 at 8:38 am

Oh, I don’t know. The sewers in Silent Hill weren’t too bad.

Darenus May 10, 2009 at 11:17 am

Holy sh!t…. this is one bad game….. really glad you managed to squeeze out a review out of this one, before going completely insane ;_; But yea, one question bothers me here… what were you about to say about the 2nd level?

Eitherway, maybe you might fix that one day, but as for now, and putting that surprise end aside, it was a great and I really mean GREAT review… :) Very fun to watch and suffer along with you, matey. Hope yer happy pills will still get you back to healthy states :p

You’re greatness <3 (including your appearance in the anniversary video XDDDDDDD)

AtlasRedux May 10, 2009 at 11:27 am

Hehe, yet another awesome Spoony review.
Also, I enjoy that your reviews / playthroughs are so much longer and covers much more of the games than anyone else.
And regarding the emulator-”issue” : gotta have emu. Gotta have savestates for showing off glitches etc.
AND … get some highres on and filtering right and Zelda suddenly looks a ton better than originally on the NES ;)

Ronald MacKinnon May 10, 2009 at 12:00 pm

Wow, the ending totally confused me at first. I thought there was something wrong with my browser until I realized what you were talking about. Excellent cut Spoony, great review.

poisontongue May 10, 2009 at 12:32 pm

Jeeze, a friend had this game. I never even figured out you could set explosives or kick things. How the hell could any kid figure this game out?

God that was a long time ago. One of the worst games I’ve ever actually played.

Hippocrates May 10, 2009 at 4:01 pm

Loved it and watch out for snakes!

Nobody May 10, 2009 at 7:18 pm

CZ May 10, 2009 at 11:37 pm

Is that pimp looking character Michael Jackson after Smooth Criminal?

Blob May 11, 2009 at 9:39 am

Emm… anyone else feel that was a little like AVGN

Sportacus May 11, 2009 at 1:58 pm

If you’re going to use an emulator, take your mouse of the screen :P

Timely May 11, 2009 at 5:54 pm

HAHA it’s like a retro AVGN Style of reviewing games XD

Joe May 11, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Wow I never noticed the mouse or anything

The_GodfatherSJP May 11, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Haha, very funny, you ended it like the Sopranos finale.

I HATED THE SOPRANOS FINALE!

Moca Java May 12, 2009 at 4:03 am

zantetsuken May 12, 2009 at 7:22 am

David Andrew Wiebe May 12, 2009 at 11:21 am

Wow, I’m glad I never had to play this game. Or, at the very least, I’ve eliminated all memories of it.

brandonheat8 May 12, 2009 at 6:15 pm

i’ve played this before at my friends house a long time ago, played the first level, and as soon as i lost the ability to shoot i turned it off.

notyoursavior78 May 13, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Ha that was funny in a old styled way. Reminded me of a Armake21, PlayitBogart review. Or the old Spoony reviews. I liked it, that game was hard to follow though. I would have never got as far as Spoony did even with outside help.

tommy May 13, 2009 at 9:45 pm

Do more NES reviews! Awesome!

Harvey Dyme May 13, 2009 at 10:54 pm

I had to go get a chili dog because of this video. It’s one thing to take a break studying for Finals to watch Spoony. It’s another to have to drive 20 minutes out of the way just to get a Chili Dog at midnight.

Goddamn you Spoony! :3

RinguPingu May 14, 2009 at 12:06 pm

“Snake? Snake!? SNAAAAAAKEEE!?” XD

Ink May 17, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Lol- gawd- That Haha room w/ that guy. That was really evil. >__>

Yeay- Oldboy (that is a wonderfully sick, twisted movie). =D

lawl- Spoony Bum.

perochial-joe May 17, 2009 at 5:53 pm

So.. Is anybody else surprised to see the FFVIII action figures on Spoony’s bookshelf behind him?

John May 19, 2009 at 11:52 am

Now why on earth do you have FF8 figures?

Zachary May 20, 2009 at 10:55 am

First, nice Sopranos reference i.e. the mid sentence end. Second, down with Make My Video on the Sega CD.

Kain May 20, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Awesome!!

Nolan May 21, 2009 at 7:47 am

why the hell do you have Final Fantasy VIII figures?

tshatcher May 21, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Wow you eneded that episode like the series finale of The Sapronos

sfried May 21, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Damn, this is well done. The review was really solid, and nice ending to boot!

Stevey B May 21, 2009 at 5:26 pm

Haha great phantasmagoria 2 reference, your lets play of it was great and so was this.

Victor Laube May 22, 2009 at 11:07 pm

I love how in old 80’s games you have to break stuff to find food. Hey theres a wooden crate I’ll just break it an.. well hey look at that a ham, I’ll just eat this ham from this crate. Mmmmm crate ham.

Quinn May 25, 2009 at 8:09 pm

I think my favorite part of this review is “SURPRISE! SHITTY NES GAME!”

Boonehams May 26, 2009 at 6:39 pm

The graphics, the circular logic in item retrieval (items with the sole purpose of getting you more items) and the nonsensical level progression sort of reminds me of the Mad Max NES game. I used to own that and that game bites it hard.

Isolder74 May 28, 2009 at 10:40 am

On the running about in the sewer, shouldn’t harry eventually end in a brown suit after running about the sewer so much? :D

hadokenboom25 May 28, 2009 at 4:04 pm

OMG it’s chester A. Bum’s veteran cousin lol

Besdomny May 30, 2009 at 1:08 pm

yay, ff8 figures!

Panzermanathod June 8, 2009 at 11:15 pm

What was with that Lucy in the Sky song? Where is it from?

Sam C. June 9, 2009 at 6:31 pm

The song is one of the many famous Beatles songs

Shadow Mage June 9, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Lol, the password for the second level is “Misty”. = D

You mean like from pokemon? Does that mean there are a shit ton of bugs or something there?

Panzermanathod June 10, 2009 at 4:08 am

I know Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is a Beatles song, I just never heard it that way.

tombert June 10, 2009 at 8:34 am

Movie based video games have always sucked?!

NatterV2 (Liam) June 10, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Hey Spoony great job on the review a good laugh

point)blank( June 17, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Best lines of this video:
“Surprise shitty NES game!”
“No, you idiot, you need a white suit! Go jump in front of a pimp and he’ll give you a white suit ya fuckin’ moron!”
“Who the fuck was that?!”
“Someone tell me what the fuck I did right!”
