The Spoony Experiment

Epic Brawl: Chicago Vlog – Day 3

by Spoony on May 17, 2009 · View Comments

A couple of explanations before I get to the videos:

The videos that follow are basically uncut, raw footage straight from the tape, so if you’re looking for a highlight or blooper reel you might be disappointed. I’m working on the second part of the Linkara vs. Dr. Insano crossover at the moment and I’d rather work on that than comb through 90 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage. As a result, this isn’t quite as structured as the previous two days of vlogs.

If you hear sudden pops or changes in audio quality, it’s because I’m turning on the shotgun microphone to pick up distant conversations.

Finally, I was unable to get much footage of the battle after we took our lunch break. I was in most of the scenes at that point, and couldn’t therefore record.

meh.

Krest May 17, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Nice to see a behind the scenes look at such a thing spoony. Gives and insight on just how much work that video was on all ends. And yea, I’m sure you were looking for better shots than Doug’s ass several times. lol

Soundman May 17, 2009 at 8:58 pm

I actually liked this format of not cutting anything. It made me feel like I was there.

BoredCouchPotato May 17, 2009 at 9:31 pm

I always wondered what it was it was like making all of this stuff. Now, I know and all i can say it pretty awesome and looks like a blast. Keep up the great work.

Doc Holidae May 17, 2009 at 9:32 pm

wow. it’s really cool to see what goes into this. like the nostalgia chick’s entrance. even a simple 30 second part of the movie took them almost 5 minutes to film. damn interesting. thanks for uploading this, noah!

Zemnexx May 17, 2009 at 9:39 pm

I love these Vlogs and behind the scenes stuff, its cool to see how its all done and what goes into the making of it, lets us appreciate the video more deeply. On a side note, did anyone else notice the camera linger around the girls sometimes, not that I’m complaining, and it was kinda funny to see it jerk back like Spoony was like “NO! Stay focused Spoony!”. lol

Vance May 17, 2009 at 10:26 pm

Dude I wish I could do this stuff. All hail the Spoony One.

supermoose May 17, 2009 at 10:33 pm

a couple of things, why do they say quiet on the set if they’re going to dub it anyway? i mean they’re throwing out the sound track anyway why does it need to be quiet?
also in the final cut, doug fires a shot then pulls back the action on his gun. but its semi-auto, once you fire your first shot it is loaded. if he had fired a shot already he would just have ejected a perfectly good round and loaded a second round. unless it jammed and he was clearing it. but yeah just askin

Lotus Prince May 17, 2009 at 10:35 pm

Once again, Spoony, thank you so much for this. You’re the greatest!

Arreis May 17, 2009 at 10:43 pm

You really love us fans, right, Spoony? Why else would you give us such great presents? ^_^

DanManX May 17, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Maybe it’s because my friends and I make movies, but I found this series of vlogs fascinating, personally.

I was, however, a bit disappointed. Didn’t you say you and Rob were shrieking Dune quotes at each other all day? Where was that? Where was Spoony proving his superior nerd status to everyone in the room?

ArawnNox May 17, 2009 at 10:53 pm

I love watching other film makers plying their trade. Still getting my own stuff off the ground, but watching you all is quite inspiring. Can’t wait to see what happens on Day 5, Spoony. :)

Oh, and Supermoose, you’d be surprised how often, in the edit lab, you need that room-tone when you add the music or other sound so it doesn’t sound like you just slapped unrelated sounds together. Helps it seem like it was all there. Also, on Doug’s use of the gun, consider how often guns get re-cocked in movies, expelling useful shells, it seems to be an action movie thing. That, and I don’t think they had anyone running continuity. :)

Can’t wait for more, Spoony. :D

CowboyTD May 17, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Thanks for the behind the scenes Spoony. It is crazy how internet reviews have blown up here online. Great job man.

aaa May 18, 2009 at 12:01 am

Heart!

Gorvar May 18, 2009 at 12:16 am

I see you had a good time there dude, espcially with hitting LMG.
This shows that violence against women is fun!……wait…

Hamtaro May 18, 2009 at 12:48 am

Everyone hates loud, crude jerks on the internet. Feel free to make video rants about them, I for one would like to see some of them publicly berated for once. Strike back!

Matsern May 18, 2009 at 2:59 am

Thank you for recording all this and getting us backstage.
Great job, Spoony.

Raion May 18, 2009 at 3:59 am

great! thanks for doing it. the “making of” should really become common practice.

and… what’s up with following around little miss gamer in the first part? studying you target, eh?

The D May 18, 2009 at 4:17 am

I love how it’s
“James!” “Lindsay!” “Doug!” “Ben”

and then

“Spoony!”

alldreamsfalldown May 18, 2009 at 5:12 am

For someone who is “open to ideas ands collaboration” Doug is very quick to shrug off other people’s ideas. I maen all the time, I don’t recall him agreeing with anyone’s suggestions.

Sjuge May 18, 2009 at 5:16 am

Dude… not a single shot of the Nostalgia Chick in the schoolgirl skirt? Shame on your, sir. Shame on you.

Stevey B May 18, 2009 at 6:35 am

Anyone else think Doug has a little bit of OCD? Also it seemed like they had fun, wish the final product was a little bit more funny though…

J May 18, 2009 at 7:05 am

Nice Behind the Scenes.

For everyone that thought Doug was being a little controlling you have to remember there was a lot of people that all had ideas and he was trying to coordinate them to work together and get something done in a short time. Typically the guy that does that does seem to come off as an ass a bit but frankly doug did a pretty decent job of not seeming to douche like (at least from these videos).

Did think it was funny that Spoony seemed to like shooting little Miss Gamer, every time she walked by he followed her =P.

Raion May 18, 2009 at 7:17 am

alldreamsfalldown,
recall the speech Doug did: he basically said “I’m open to suggestions, but we have a lot of filming to do, so shut up and let’s get on with it”. and rightly so.
to be able to listen to everyone’s ideas and try to work them in would have required a huge amount of additional time. the video would have been better for sure, but the quality vs commitment ratio would have been much less favourable, if such commitment was at all feasible from all parties.
not only that. it’s easy to trow ideas from the sidelines, where it’s much, much harder to work them in seamlessly. so, give the guy a break.

hey, but, should they decide to do pickups and release a director’s cut edition…

jawmuncher May 18, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Good Footage Hope next time they do something like this they can film together longer.
Lets get to donating people!

Kevin May 18, 2009 at 1:31 pm

Is it just me, or is the zoom on your camera really loud?

DamonD May 18, 2009 at 2:17 pm

I appreciate the raw upload, because I find it interesting to see people filming. See the way the handle, reherse and position things to get it done.

Charon May 18, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Wooo! I’m in the third video! (I’m the Geek Fight guy)

One quick question though, was anyone filming when Aussie got hit in the nuts? That shot never made it into the out takes.

Sandrock May 18, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Spoony, these videos that you were able to take shows how much effort everyone put into the brawl. It must’ve been quite stressful for Doug to try and get everything done in one day but in the end I’m pretty sure he was greatful that things turned out so well.

Guterman May 18, 2009 at 3:54 pm

What Song is used in the video?

Malvineous May 18, 2009 at 8:23 pm

To answer Guterman, The song is the main theme song of Street Fighter IV.

Rockrea_dude May 18, 2009 at 8:25 pm

well.. that guy with the glasses is not a very good director …. i bet super spoony would do it better!

minago May 18, 2009 at 9:52 pm

it would have went better if the scenes that required the most people were shot first then worked down to the least ….lost of people only had one or two speaking parts .

just seemed like alot of waisted time filming…..people talking …people walking in and out the door ….not knowing where to stand… marking spots on the floor with tape before hand would have helped.

Gozar May 18, 2009 at 9:53 pm

What was up with the AVGN? He looked like he had no enthusiasm. Was he tired or something?

ROCKREA_DUDE May 18, 2009 at 9:53 pm

hmm.. well in noticed that a lot of people had really cool ideas.. but that guy with the glasses(dont know his name) didnt accept any of them.. hmmm .. i thought that was rude…but thats my opinion.. i would love to know.. what you think about the guy with the glasses… how is it like to work with himm…. for some reason it seem like it wasnt very pleasant… anyway… i wanna see every single crossover so you better put the on your web.. aight? … sweet….. see ya later!!

minago May 18, 2009 at 9:55 pm

“lost of people only had one or two speaking parts” .

meant that not alot of people had speaking parts ..

Rocketman May 19, 2009 at 1:25 am

@Gozar, who asked why the AVGN might have seemed so tired.

I don’t think he was really, despite the character he plays, I hear he is actually really shy and he is also that “keeps to himself a lot” type of guy. Like Spoony said in commentary for the Brawl, it must have been weird to be in a hotel with a bunch of people you don’t know, and then act with them after that. I imagine the only person he actually talked to was The Critic and that guy who plays his music for him (Sorry, I don’t really remember his name =[)

JollySam May 19, 2009 at 1:44 am

For goodness’ sake, people…

Stop complaining about ‘how the AVGN is tired’ or ‘TGWTG is a rubbish director’, or ‘lots of time was wasted,’ etc. This is the funniest thing I’ve watched for months, even for something on the Spoony Experiment, an already very funny website. If you think you can do better, I challenge you to try and do so, and post it up on the internet.

You’ll fail though.

Drambo May 19, 2009 at 7:31 am

Yeah its a lot of pressure on James.Everyone probably expected him to be this hugely entertaining, charismatic guy but like Spoony said, everyone was familiar with him and his work but he didn’t know anything about most of the people there.

Gozar May 19, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Jollysam,

I think you need to buy cable.

Indigo May 19, 2009 at 5:18 pm

“…Little close guys.” XD

These vids are ace, Spoony. Seeing the awkward pauses, the break times, etc. makes the people in this vid seem more, (for lack of a better term) “human”. Enjoy these more than the behind the scenes vids posted on TGWTG (though both making-ofs rule).

Chrissy May 19, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Thanks again Spoony, these are really interesting!

Its sad to read comments from so many ungratefull bastards here….Do you have any idea how much pressure Doug must have been under there? People had flown from all over the world to Chicago to film this, the hotel was booked, food catered for etc all to get this video shot in one day, if he did not finish it or really rushed it and it came out crappy then all that money would have been completely wasted.

If he had started listening to peoples suggestions then everyone would start chipping in and wanting their ideas heard, even if they were all great it would have been impossible to rehearse them, film several takes and then somehow edit it in seemlessly in such a tiny amount of time. In an ideal world they would have had more time but these are just normal guys, not given millions of dollars from hollywood to book a hotel and catering for weeks at a time. It is staggeringly impressive what they managed to achieve in just one day. Cut them all and especially Doug some slack you ungreatfull shits! And all hail the great Spoony!

Moeez May 20, 2009 at 4:36 am

Haha, AVGN saying his classic obscenities when getting beat up by Nostalgia Chick+Guy!

JollySam May 20, 2009 at 6:12 am

“Jollysam,

I think you need to buy cable.”

What does that even mean? You think I’ll see something funnier on there? Like yet more fat people tripping over banana skins? I stopped finding that kind of humour funny a couple of decades ago.

Jayson May 22, 2009 at 8:36 pm

This whole production was really well done. Doug seemed like a good director. Everyone that made this possible really deserves a round of applause. I thought james might have been the type of person is more shy and quiet when the camera is not rolling. However he did surprise me a little. Overall it does not matter I’m a very shy person I cannot even get in front of a camera and act or perform in front of people in the least.

James as well as everyone else were really good in there scenes. I only knew maybe 5 people in whole video. I was not expecting so many people to show up my first time watching it. I was like wow spoonys here awesome. I have checked out various other peoples videos now too. If they ever get together again in the future if theirs more they can all pitch in there ideas a little more. Watching theses reviews I remember spoony saying how he wanted to do things in different ways and so did other people , I really liked the way Doug set up the script.

I accually kind of congratulate Doug for sticking to his plans , I would have a hard time pushing people in line Doug really gets the job done well. Hopefully in the future James will take some time to watch other peoples videos from this production and get to know them a little better and open up a little. I have seen videos of James with his friends or even the making of the last big battle that was filmed and James was loud , laughing etc.

Just some things I wanted to mention. Everyone in the video made me. LOL!!!
Thanks for posting theses up Spoony.

Wubby October 21, 2009 at 12:29 am

It’s so surreal seeing all these guys together! For everyone being harsh on Doug, the man is on a time schedule people… Imagine booking 30-40 flights, writing a script, filming a lot of people who aren’t used to being directed. When he said he was open to suggestions, he meant little changes in lines or movements, not script alteration.

I give MAJOR props to doug for not melting or succumbing to everyones idea. He had a plan, a script, and a brother who does awesome camera work. As far as I’m concerned, he executed the whole thing beautifully.

I hope to see James and Doug producing, starring, or directing high budget movies in the future.

You guys did great man!

LiK November 11, 2009 at 6:35 pm

this was great Noah. i’m really surprised that Doug and Rob didn’t think to record the event being filmed. this is pretty cool to see the process so others can learn how Dog and Rob work.

LiK November 11, 2009 at 6:36 pm

er, Doug*

Jorda75 March 17, 2010 at 1:46 am

This was awesome Spoony, very helpful to all of us who always aspire to make web shows :D
