When you have a day to work, with a bunch of people to work with, to make the best quality work in that amount of time, it's understandable if he really can't work in ideas others have had. It just seems that way because he's the director, so he has to give the orders. I don't think he wasn't open to new ideas, I just think he's a bit strict when it comes to deadlines and structure.
