I’ve not called myself “conservative” in a while. I believe in small government, fiscal conservatism, personal responsibility (income, retirement, personal protection, etc), freedom of culture. I believe that the government should exist to establish a framework to allow people to pursue their interests, not to individually hand-hold. I’m a privacy advocate. I don’t associate with libertarians, because social darwinism runs strong in their beliefs. Conservatives, like teh awesum Warrior said, are just focused on the “That’s the way it’s always been” bullshit, not rocking the boat of established money flows, and trying to legislate morality. Both the dems & reps are being assholes with turning our country into a police/surveillance state.

It’s annoying to always describe specific political beliefs rather than having a handy label. :(

I am, personally, liberal. I think socialism can work, blah blah blah. If anything, I’m an anarchist (but only in a very specific sense of the term; what I consider anarchy is what some of my American friends call participative democracy).

However, despite my views, I consider conservatism to be a necessary and valuable side of the political spectrum. I’m sorry to any conservatives here who think that this is offensive, but I don’t see conservative politics as ‘innovative’. Conservatism is about resisting innovation, but that’s a good thing.

Conservatism exists to balance the fads of the liberal side. Everyone complains about the extreme right-wing (and they ARE bad, I’m not disputing that) but the extreme left-wing is just as bad. I’m an anarchist, but I don’t really see it as something currently achievable, so I’m not going to go out and start an anarchist revolution. But conservatism exists to balance out the fads that just wouldn’t work at the moment (like anarchy, for example) so that we maintain a political system that is functional and open to reasonable levels of innovation while keeping enough of the old to remain functional.

I was cool with this up until he started doing politics. In HS I was actually worse off than Hellwig, guidance counselors would tell me to DROP OUT and just work retail forever just cuz my GPA was under 3. Here’s something I think hasn’t quite been pointed out, but WARRIOR’S “Queering doesn’t make the world work” and other politically correct statements are deliberate attempts to bait the audience in order to prove his argument that “Conservatives are governed by reason and Liberals are governed by emotion.”

And sure enough, people in audience take the bait by reacting emotionally, thus “proving” his argument without having to cite specific examples himself. And when people do try and argue his points rationally, he ramps up the rhetoric, mixing insults, sarcasm, and name calling, to provoke people into responding with insults, sarcasm, and name calling themselves, thus, once again, “proving” his argument that “liberals are irrational and emotional.”

This is clearly demonstrated when he gets into a side-debate with one of the students over “there are no rights without responsibility” after the student responds by saying the right to life is a right that doesn’t have to be earned and therefore doesn’t require responsibility–not to mention that he didn’t make it clear to whom a person has to be responsible towards. Likewise when the one girl with the glasses attempted to define the difference between conservatives and liberals and WARRIOR all but accuses her of being a socialist despite the fact that she was correctly answering the question.

Wow. I don’t agree with some of the things he’s saying, particularly his stance on homosexuality, but he’s one hell of an entertainer I give him that. I think he’s taking patriotism to a new level. I understand he’s being realistic, on one hand, by saying that no one is truly equal and striving for a utopia is not in the best interests, but imposing religion on the audience and saying America is a perfect country is not respectful and realistic either.

Most conservatives, at least apparently those that Warrior considers himself, are ground in realism. Some things aren’t equal no matter how right it should be. It’s like saying life is fair when we all know it isn’t. Some things aren’t fair, and that is reality. That’s what he was trying to say.

What came across was a sense of racist and homophobic conservative republican slander. He did not use words effectively to make an eloquent argument. Of course, being heckled and jeered at in a room full of college students isn’t exactly the best place to make an argument, especially since most are liberal democrats.

Dont get me wrong, i like the fact anyone, even minority’s, can take a shot at politics, hence i’m very surpised a lot of folks like Obama, but of course the rub is, everyone can take a shot, including former wrestlers/actors/entertainers who were not made for political speeches and provide us with luls.

That’s what I getting at: if WARRIOR was a liberal, claimed that “liberals govern through reason and conservatives govern through emotion,” said provocative statements, and the audience reacted with lots of yelling and heckling, then he’d basically say “See, you’re proving my point–conservatives govern through emotion not reason.” In truth, you’re right–people will react emotionally to proactive, politically incorrect, or insulting statements regardless of their political affiliation.

Well, obviously, he speaking off the cuff, but consider this–WARRIOR was a professional wrestler, a form of entertainment. And just like other entertainer, a professional wrestler says and doing things which would elicit cheers and boos depending upon whether he was supposed to be a “face” or a “heel.” So just because what he says may not sound like he put much thought into it, doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t deliberately trying provoke the audience and not aware that he’s doing so. On that level, he may know exactly what he is doing.

Is it just me, or are there quite a few people who seem to associate fiscally conservative and personally responsible government policy with bigotry, racism, and ignorance because of a few bad apples?

Just because the government isn’t doing something via welfare or other programs doesn’t mean that individuals aren’t themselves capable of doing so. People will consistently donate a fixed percentage of their income to charitable causes. Considering how wasteful government programs tend to be, the amount of money returned to the economy would be more than enough money to buy a job for all those who can provide for themselves and charity for those who cannot.

The economy has nothing to do with the personality of the ruler, but its economic policy. The economy can do perfectly fine no matter who’s in charge so long as the economic policy allows it.

Our current economic crisis had more to do with the attempts of the Federal Reserve to control interest rates and boost the economy by artificially printing money. There were a few other things, but that was the main cause. There was too much spending and not enough investing/production.

What you need to change would be the basic aspects of human nature. We will always put ourselves slightly above those around us. The nice thing about a truly free market is that you would be forced to only increase your own wealth through voluntary exchange, thus increasing the wealth of others in the process.
