Just thought I’d let you know that I’ve added commentaries to Part 1 and Part 2 of the Bruce Lee review.

Enjoy!

Finished part 1. Good stuff.

And who doesn’t love a little brutality towards women?

Maul August 1, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Also I really don’t think the obvious split screening is a problem, I mean if anything it adds to the camp of it all and its free entertainment anyway. I rather you have fun entertaining us, rather than stress out over lighting. Also maybe I’m blind but the first viewing I didn’t notice until you mentioned it on the commentary.

PatMan33 August 1, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Commentary always makes the videos better!

Inamidato August 1, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Listening to your commentaries is often as entertaining as the reviews.

I hope you will keep this format in the future!

42manZ August 1, 2009 at 1:25 pm

You should do an iRiff on Rifftrax then you can have the straight forward talking about the movies, without worrying about becoming too self-indulgent.

Maul August 1, 2009 at 1:43 pm

Could the next movie be another Reb Brown flick?

PastaLibre August 1, 2009 at 1:54 pm

It surprises me a bit that you don’t like your review because it’s so involved.
To be honest, I thought your review of clones of Bruce Lee was one of the most refreshing videos you have done lately. I sure love the formula, but it still strikes me as funny, when I think about Dr. Insano running around in your new place.
I mean, now you don’t need to worry about continuity, because he is simply a clone of you.

Keep up the good work!

Psyko August 1, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I really didn’t notice the splitscreening problem until you pointed it out. I’m also not a very observant person, but that’s not the point.

Rath August 1, 2009 at 2:09 pm

9th :V

Eh, I jest. #1… ’twas pretty good. Watching #2 now :D

Bruce Lee Nº3 August 1, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Sponny dont ever forget your humble beginnings at gamespot and keep up the good work.

JoshC August 1, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Fear the power of the Chuck Norris Clones!!

PastaLibre August 1, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Also, Dr. Nye is a genius. What is less threatening than stealing all your water supplies? Stealing all your food by killing all the plants. (No honestly, it’s almost more cruel than a Deathray.)

Maniac August 1, 2009 at 2:34 pm

All right, nice nod to continuing the Ripper playthrough!

ObieWanCoyote August 1, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Hey Spoony, great vids as usual and the offer is still open, I’d be happy to volunteer some time to help with production of your videos and I’m nearby your folks place if that helps give a vague location =P. Keep up the great work and get back to some of your old school round table friends some day. You could have had help moving =P

Jason August 1, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Gods, I hope the movie is Robowar. Or maybe The Sword and the Sorcerer. Reb Browns actually been in a lot of stuff, though I don’t believe he stars in the latter.

And I know Spoony is all about the fantasy, but being a big sci-fi fan myself, I really want to see someone review The Omega Virus. Just having that game mock you as you moved around the board, though I guess you can’t really review a 4 player game like that if you are all by your lonesome.

The Favs August 1, 2009 at 2:44 pm

I love all the special effects you do! You don’t have to do them, we didn’t ask you to do them, but the fact that you went the extra mile (or seven) really shows that you want to give us a great show! And I appreciate that. And as one film maker to another: you did a great job! Seriously, I didn’t notice the splicing until you mentioned it. I really don’t mind the effects and splicing and what-not you do. I actually find it more entertaining than you sitting in front of a camera (not complaining, those are great too!). But, yeah, I know those can be time consuming and difficult.

The Spoony Experiment to me is like Mad Magazine smashed with a VH1 special (and the debris wiped away). It’s very entertaining, and always look forward to the next episode. I know you hear this a lot, but you really should have a spot on tv!

Thanks for all your work and effort, Spoony!

Emran August 1, 2009 at 2:58 pm

I watch both of them

They should make the “clones of Squall” or “clones of Cloud” that would be hilarious

areoborg August 1, 2009 at 3:21 pm

I saw the seams in the split screen but I didn’t care. Since you were doing a review of Clones of Bruce Lee with actors who are obviously not Bruce Lee, I just chalked it up as another dig at the movie: where you have clones of you who obviously aren’t clones of you.

wendell August 1, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Lul Clones of Chuck Norris That would be HILARIOUS i mean Wow.
Also clones of Vandam and clones of Schwarzenegger for the most craptastic crazy action flick ever made XD

JohnnyFox August 1, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Regarding something that was only briefly mentioned somewhere here, one thing that I think Spoony should never worry about is trying to make Dr. Insano or any other characters make sense or fit in a larger context. They’re fun to see, and it’s all the more fun if I don’t know their detailed biography and how they fit in the timeline.
Same goes for generally everything. I view each new video as standalone work, that way the recurring jokes and characters are also somehow even funnier, but if every video was a part of one big story and everything was tied together and explained thoroughly, it would all lose one layer of fun.
The cloning thing fits in right after the “death” (even though I wouldn’t mind a completely unexplained fresh start either, the unanswered question is usually the most intriguing) and it works especially well with the Clones of Bruce Lee review, but overall I’d hate to view the rest 23,000 upcoming videos as episodes of The Clone of Spoony Experiment.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter all that much what Spoony does, just as long as he does something.

'Ley August 1, 2009 at 4:29 pm

I actually really like the split screening. I really like the interplay between your normal persona and Dr. Insano interacting. You shouldn’t think it is indulgent if the dialog works then its great which in your case it normally does.

and to add @wendell
Clones of Van Damn would be awesome. Think of the completely unintelligible dialogue between them. Plus if it was like multiplicity a effeminate Van Damn would be great but I don’t think we would notice the difference between the original and Van Damn four.

mknote August 1, 2009 at 4:44 pm

I’ve got it: The Clones of Jack Bauer. The terrorists have taken the president… and this job is too big for just ONE Jack Bauer!

MK

Kevin Holsinger August 1, 2009 at 4:55 pm

I’m not sure I’d want to inflict “Kung Pow: Enter the Fist” on Spoony, but having watched this review and listened to the commentary, I was thinking of that movie a lot.

theo August 1, 2009 at 5:42 pm

It is good to see that you’re so hard on yourself. I admire the fact that you are struggling to do a better product. Don’t over do it but dont be lazy either, try to find the right middle. Also, hearing you rambling about stuff is just fine and seeing you riffing movies is always a pleasure.

Insano was pertinent in the last review (clones of Bruce Lee) since there was so much stupid mad science going on, but I think your Squall was more called for than the bum as a second clone. It would have been more fitting since you share such a hate/hate even more relationship with FF8 and you kinda made your mark by bashing that game. FF8 is now, thanks to your hate toward it, part of you and will be associated with you (Forever and ever and ever…). Also the bum is not one of your own creation and quite frankly I always found the character to be mean spirited. He’s not really funny and make fun of the tragic reality of today’s poverity.

ismo väisänen August 1, 2009 at 6:00 pm

How can I view this commentary? It’s on this site right?
Added picture for the curious ones.

The commentaries are always a great addition, hope to see/hear more for other videos.

Lucas August 1, 2009 at 6:36 pm

I was looking up the movie on Netflix and the disc that contained that film happens to also contained a much better film called Bruce vs. Snake in Eagle Shadow, which starred a young Jackie Chan.

I guess in a sea of terrible Brucesploitation films, I’m sure this one survives pretty well thanks to Chan’s international superstardom. Just thought I point that one out for you.

JoeL August 1, 2009 at 8:14 pm

What I really liked about the entire CoBC review is that you didn’t get out of hand with the characters and kept them on a perfect scale. They didn’t steal the show and they weren’t entirely apathic either. I do agree that the AVGN sometimes took the focus away from the games.

Kahrooch August 1, 2009 at 8:50 pm

WOOT Spoony commentaries rock!!!

RpD August 1, 2009 at 10:29 pm

I know you just got through completing this and FF8, but remember you still have to do The Ripper as well! Although for that, I don’t mind waiting a while longer considering all the stuff you have lined up already.

By the way, I wouldn’t mind if you ended up doing that Read-aloud novel with the WWE wrestlers as secret agents. I’m sure someone would call it self-indulgent but eh, it’s unique and fun!

Assiman August 1, 2009 at 10:39 pm

You really like commentaries, you wnb-Uwe Boll! Just kidding, Spoony’s commentaries are the best, but remember; There’s still reviews need to be done.

Great commentaries and don’t be too hard on yourself. We like your reviews, no matter how shitty quality

Pharaoh August 1, 2009 at 10:50 pm

A posthumous (sp?) movie with clones of Stallone? I would SO pay to see this! You could have like, John Rambo, Rocky “The Italian Stalion” Balboa and erm… John “Demolition Man” Spartan (just coz I wanna hear him say “Feeniiks!!”).

The Staclones! Think about it, it could work! Bring on the Slysploitation!

Ollie August 1, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Ah, Spoon, always the humble perfectionist. And don’t get me wrong, we love you for it. But I just wish you sometimes could cut yourself som slack. I mean you do compliment yourself and seconds later you sort of take it back. Yeah, I saw the split screen when you pointed it out, it became pretty obvious then. But the reason I didn’t notice it the first time around was your performance. You know, just as well as everybody else, that no special effects in the world can save a poorly written script that is performed by a not so talented person. I was watching you, and the interaction with the other “clones” and that was amazing. Keep up the good work, with or without special effects, just continue to make vids as a labor of love, and we will keep watching. You make me proud that I donated some money to TSE.

Gen August 1, 2009 at 11:54 pm

I could never quite understand, just why you can’t show tits or even nipples. I know it’s not just an american thing, what with all the censoring and the prudery (prudity? prudeness?) in the media, but here in germany no one would lift an eyebrow over a couple of scenes with (or a scene with a couple of) nude women.

Zuka August 2, 2009 at 12:15 am

Keep it up Spoony, doing great. =P

Greg P. August 2, 2009 at 12:38 am

THREE Eddie Van Halens? With a performance of “Eruption” that will destroy the entire universe?

Mind blowing, Spoony. Just mind blowing.

Rory B August 2, 2009 at 2:37 am

I love your directors commentarys, i love listening to them on dvd anyway, and i’m at about your level of filmmaking too, so its fun all you say. Keep doing them pleaaase.

Japhdi August 2, 2009 at 2:43 am

I like the introduction of the Bum-Clone and the Dr Insano bits – felt liek it added to the reviews more than it distracted from the real thing.

PontifexPrimus August 2, 2009 at 3:54 am

It’s always nice to hear the commentaries – I also stumbled through the blip.tv page upon some other review commentaries I didn’t know existed.

And yes, both the review and the commentary are great. Granted, this movie seems to be kind of an easy target, but I really enjoyed the way you used the “clones” idea and had Dr. Insano justify his appearance by critiquing the movie’s Evil Scientist™. Also, I wouldn’t worry too much about continuity regarding your characters, they’re fine the way they are…

It’s good to hear that you went wild with the SFX in the last two reviews but won’t continue that as much in the future; while I like to see you grow as a film-maker, so to speak, I still like watching some of your old stuff, like the Terror Trax playthroughs, which basically have you sitting in a chair and talk. I’d say that that is your main strength, and that SFX or guest appearances by other characters can complement that, but aren’t really necessary. Keep up the good work!

WristWatchMafia August 2, 2009 at 6:33 am

Spoony, the single greatest thing you’ve ever done is phantasmagoria, I admit.

But sometimes its nice to have the smart-alecky family feel of MST3k. I think you’re really doing yourself a disservice by deciding to go more low-tech from here-on-out.
ANyways, just my opinion.

fpj August 2, 2009 at 8:51 am

Firstly, I like your characters because you’re actually a good actor but as a MST3K fan I do agree that keeping it simple is good.

Secondly, as “42manZ” said, you should, nay, you MUST do an iRiff for RiffTrax. You are by far the most qualified, experienced and last but not least best riffer outside the MST3K crew. Please, show them how it’s done.

This is pretty simple Gen. Spoony’s hosting these videos on Blip. They dictate what content they’re willing to host and nude woman isn’t one of them. So if he wants to keep the videos (and his account) he has to cover it up. Also, Spoony is a classy guy

*Woman get’s hit in the neck.*

“Hahaha, I’m sorry, but I have to laugh at that scene.”

…I stand by what I said.

nvm August 2, 2009 at 9:58 am

This is actually a relief. I’m glad you’ll go back to more on topic stuff.

About self indulgence, this had become quite a problem mostly because it was getting too much in the way. Even the crossovers got old pretty fast (in internet years), but you guy had some fun and made friends so I can’t really fault you on it. But just talking about the game/movie/whatever would be in my opinion a good step.

I have to admit tough that in that regard you have been pretty reserved, which is why I watch your review the most and multiple times too. I’m really glad you weren’t oblivious, should have know better. :D Keep up the good work.

TheBugg August 2, 2009 at 10:28 am

Do you realize what would HAPPEN to the world if we had three more Chuck Norrises running around?! LOL.

And for the record, some of us like it when you get ’self-indulgent.’ I always find Insano hilarious.

Sai August 2, 2009 at 10:57 am

Ah don’t be so hard on yourself about the split screen. I didn’t really notice any seams cause I was too busy watching the characters, besides which, what makes a great splitscreen effect is the characters reacting to each other as if the others are actually there and you definitely pulled that off well.

I didn’t mind Insano in this video so much, but he was oddly low-key and coherent, I dunno, it was a little weird. He doesn’t seem like a character that can really be sustained with long bits of dialog (except, well, I guess that home shopping network and presidential race bit lol. Don’t listen to me.)

Also as a kid I had always heard this “Bruce Li died getting shot in front of the camera” thing. Maybe people were confusing him with Brandon Lee but when I first heard that in the movie I was like “wait is this where that rumor came from?” Hurrdurr.

ak August 2, 2009 at 12:50 pm

really this is the best way to use the doctor insano character, use him to riff on the stupid ideas of other made scientists

urza22000 August 2, 2009 at 1:44 pm

i don’t know exactly why but I like your commentaries as much if not a tiny bit more than your videos Spoony man. I guess it’s kinda the insight into why you did a review and your thoughts and ideas going into it and looking back on it I guess is the appeal. Anyway can’t wait for new vids, maybe commentaries for them or some of your other reviews/LPs. Really can’t wait to see a new SWAT 4 or Ripper vid that would be awesome.

takenoko August 3, 2009 at 12:46 am

I love this stuff. It’s always interesting to hear about what goes on in creating these videos. I kind of feel like the self criticism was a bit much. The special effects usually fit in, and rarely feel forced. Plus pointing out the seams is like looking at a Power Ranger show and going, “hey, that’s not a monster, it’s just a guy in a rubber suit!”

Memph August 3, 2009 at 8:30 am

I always found your creator comentary’s uwe bol-esk. erven the comments on the lighting….
Nice parody….

Keep it up dude.

once you shuld try a full commentary in that german-english accent. like, Und i thaught zat ze ligthnink it zis scene was verry gut…

Major LOL-age

Jeremy C August 3, 2009 at 9:56 am

Your commentaries are as entertaining as your vids, Spoony.

I’m not sure why anyone has a problem with the videos or label some of them as self-indulgent. They’re your videos and your creativity, you don’t get paid for doing them, be as self-indulgent as you want.
