When they told me my warranty was up on the replacement they sent me I cracked it open and just kinda messed with it till it worked, and it’s been kicking since, strange I haven’t been able to do it again for any of my friends red rings of death. I don’t think his 360 is his only means of watching DVDs. He does have Ps3 that I assume works. I think it just depressed him and now his night is ruined.

Like That Dragon Guy, that’s why I chose the Wii over the Xbox 360 (PS3 never even entered into the equation for me, honestly). I’ve never heard of catastrophic equipment failure with the Wii, but that’s almost ALL I hear out of 360 owners. But it’s not just Microsoft – it took me SEVEN tries to get a PS2 that actually worked when I wanted it to (to this day it still won’t play DVDs or PS1 games). This is why Nintendo has been on top for so long.

Was yours simply fixed and not replaced? when mine RRoD’ed I got a new one sent back, when I checked the details on it, it also reset the 3 year warranty for me.

Spoony, I know you never read these things, but if for SOME REASON you read this, try putting it in the freezer for 10 minutes. Ours used to red ring all of the time, and we did this about 2 or 3 times after it would red ring, and it stopped. It’s ghetto, but worth the effort.

Amazingly… I’ve had two 360′s and neither of them got the RRoD at all. Spoony, all I can tell you to make the process of getting it fixed faster, is to find your own bow and get them to send you the shipping label online. I got my own box and what not and shipped it myself and had it back in two weeks. I even packed it with adult diapers… don’t ask why I have them.

Spoony I feel your pain. I spent $450 for a 360 Elite a few years back. Sad part is that It doesn’t even give me the red ring which is still covered. It just decides that 2 minutes into any game that it will freeze up and have distorted vertical and horizontal lines. So add $99 for a repair, then add almost $8 for sales tax. I suppose its an even trade though because unlike the PS3, there are games for the 360.

I know where you’re coming from with the expired warranty thing. My situation was especially horrendous: I didn’t actually get the RRoD. It was some other obscure issue that took me several calls for the tech people to finally pin down, but it was bricked all the same. Problem was, since it wasn’t the RRoD, I wasn’t applicable for the free replacement Microsoft had been advertising. The situation got even more complicated because I thought I had purchased an extended warranty but Microsoft insisted I hadn’t. Even after I sent them proof of this, I ended up having to pay the $120.

God I hope it doesn’t happen again.

tbh, just use your PS3/PC for modern games and DVDs and let the next 360 you get sit there unless you need to play an exclusive

Man, I’ve heard about the notorious RRoD. :( Sorry to hear about the warranty, too. I’ve always been a Nintendo fan, so I never really got into Microsoft’s or Sony’s crazy inventions. Unfortunately, it hasn’t let me escape from my Gamecube memory cards mysteriously corrupting themselves and destroying all their data. I got my GCN in 2005, it works totally fine after 4 years, but a little while after I started using its memory cards in my Wii, they both got corrupted, and I was forced to reformat them. :/ I don’t think they have warranties for that sort of thing.

The reason it red rings is because the GPU(s?) unset in the heat and come away from the board. Cheap soddering I think, or maybe something to do with those silly x-clamps.
This is why the towel trick works sometimes, though I don’t recommend it. It gives the GPU a chance to settle back into place. However, you also risk burning out all the rest of the components inside the console.

Basically, this all comes down to the one consistent problem with this console the entire time: too much goddamn heat.

So yeah, just look up a guide on youtube I guess. From what I’ve seen, this stuff works. It’s not like the commenters who said “OMG it works after I fixed it thank you” ever come back to say “awfuck it red-ringed again”

I’ve had two red rings for general hardware failure and, most recently, an E-74 failure (I think that’s the error code, it’s something like that). The lukewarm-ish news is that when you pay the 100 bucks you get another year on the warranty.

listen man i have seen the same problem before i have in teh 2 years almost 3 of owning a 360 had about 7 different systems before they said my warranty was up. no clue why just said they wouldnt replace it anymore. If you really need a xbox fix just buy a arcade it may seem like crap that you have to buy 2 systems but trust me the big thing that causes the rrod is the power brick and the pro models are so over stocked they dont have any out built with the new parts but the arcades are all new. i got mine and my normal life expectancy for a xbox was about 4 months but this one has last almost a good 7 months with out any sign of dying ….. knock on wood.

Out of curiosity, why NOT put towels over it? My friend did that and while it IS a temporary solution, it at least works when done right, and gives you about a week to do stuff.

I feel your pain, dude. Because of various faults and failures (only one of which was Red Ring related) I’m currently on my FIFTH Xbox 360.
1. New – Mystery game freezing/overheating issues about a month out of the box
2. New – Mystery game freezing/overheating issues about two years out of the box.
3. Used – Mystery game freezing/overheating issues about two weeks out of the box.
4. Used – Red Rings of Death 29 days out of the box (just inside the store warranty… YES!!!).
5. Used – Still alive a year later (knocking on wood).

I’ve had 4 360s in my life. Treating it well, first one died. Got given a replacement. That one died. Given a replacement. That one died, no longer in warrenty, splashed out for a new one. Which died.

So I sold the thing and got a PS3. Damn xbox, had some good memories with it, but the thing just never liked me back.

I always here how people have gotten the red ring. I guess mine is strangely resiliant, since I’ve actually took mine apart, put it back together again, and haven’t even come close to the red ring.

As anyone who owns an Xbox 360 knows, that red ring is caused by heat dissipation issues the console issues has. I’ve kept mine relatively safe by keeping it, and all my gaming stuff for that matter, in a room that’s easy to keep cool. Like the basement of my house.

So, when you get your 360 repaired or replaced, find a way to keep it cool. I would advise against fans, because they tend to either create magnetic fields, or have magnets in them, and that tends to screw up hard drives. A room with good air conditioning or a basement is your best bet. And, if you have a way to air condition your basement, then you’ve got it made!

I just got my fifth 360, which is over a year past its extended warranty. The RROD is a free repair, at least when I sent mine in less than a month ago.

A friend of mine’s been having similar trouble with his PS3, he recently got a replacement which died on him on a week ago. Thankfully since we live in the Uk, electronic goods like the PS3 automatically come with a standard 2 year warranty as part of EU regulations. You could try looking up something similar it might just help.
I suggest in the mean time you kick back and relax, aint no bother worrying about things that are out of your control. Although a box load of live spitting cobras in Bill Gate’s bed apparently helps when you 360 red rings.

Gosh I know how you feel. I’ve gone through FOUR of them and I treat them about as well as you possibly can. I’m not even that big of a gamer either (at least current-gen gaming). I haven’t played XBox in over a month because I reeeeeally don’t want to send it in knowing in the back of my mind that I’m going to have to pay another hundred bucks to fix it anyway! Urgh… I really have no idea how my older systems work just fine but a 360 will break if you sneeze near it.

I got the RROD 4 times in 3 years …. After sending my initial 2006 Xbox for repairs twice, I decided to buy a brand new 2008 Model in April 2008. Now i was in charge of my company’s christmas party last year and I managed to convince the company President and VP’s to perform a session of Rockband in front of everyone. My freaking Xbox died on me the day before the party …. yeah, my newest Xbox lasted a hole Freaking 7 months …. Wooopie freaking doo …. I sent it for repairs and used the old refurbished 3X one for my party but still ….. Hey … maybe ill be lucky and pass the 1 year mark with this one ….

I am stunned. No honestly stunned, I knew the X-box 360 had problems but I had no idea how prevalent it is. Forget towels (even though it is quite funny) you could cook bacon on one of those things!
I have to admit I’ve not gone for any next-gen consoles, not just because of the horror stories but I simply don’t have the time. When I do get a chance to jump on my PS2 (that I still have) I’ve forgotten all the controls and play like an absolute ar… urm I mean beginner.
Hope you find some way to sort it out or have better luck. Speaking of sorting it out how does a room get that hot? I mean do you live right next to a giant magnifying glass or is this new house of yours in one of the more pleasant layers of heck. I agree with the guy who said it has cooling issues. One of the friends has basically put additional fans in the thing and keeps it in the coldest part of the house. It has yet to do it again. I wish I could head over and take care of it for you, but the commute would be a bit long… (in St. Louis..)

I feel your pain, we just had our A/C drop on us Sunday and the wife is kinda touchy about how hot she gets =P. The red ring issue may be due to the additional heat in your apartment though. Try it again once the AC’s fixed if it’ll make enough change to the ambient temp. If nothing else, lemme know and I’ll bring a sledge hammer =P

My xbox (I mean the original) keeps loosing the optical drive. And I’ve got a fat PS/2 with the same issue. So it’s back to Doom, SWAT 4, and DOOM. Hey, does this mean you are playing through the expansion pack?

I feel for ya, but don’t despair, there is hope. When I got my 2nd RROD, I was also outside the warranty, and went to the net for help. Here’s a link to a fix that worked for me.

Don’t know if this crap has already been said, I’m not reading 76 comments to find out, but it doesn’t look like you have the RROD issue. There’s 2 3 red light issues.

One of them is either power cable or the audio/video input being incorrect. It’s happened to me, I crapped a brick. Simply unplug everything from the 360 and every input, power, whatever, and replug it back in. That looks like the error you’re getting, unless you’re camera is flipped.

If it is the RROD issue, your warranty is restarted when you get the 360 fixed, so you’re fine.

You need to completely unplug everything, and plug it all back in. I assume one of the plugs got fubar’d because you just moved.

dood u should google map a local store thaat might fix 360s. I would offer myself to fix urs but i live in the east coast. the repair price isnt much but u can also do it urself its really easy and u can get directions on youtube from xboxslave. HE IS THE MAN.Cause of him i know fix others xboxs and make me some sweet profit.

I just got my 3rd Xbox because My first one warranted a fix so I sent it in and they lost it in the mail, Second one died outside of the warranty, and my 3rd one is has been working for the 3 days I’ve had it, though while I was waiting I got a free PS3.

Man, when it rains… IT POURS HARD!!!! Screw MS… they are nothing but headaches especially with their OS VISTA. Only X-Box item I have is the X-BOX 360 controller I use for PC gameplay but even that cuts off during gameplay. Move to Buffalo… 85 during the day and a nice 60 deg during the night… at least this year!!!! :)

What bruno said is right. BUT i’ve got 2 xbox’s currently. Both have had the RROD (One gotten from a friend who didnt want it anymore casue microsoft screw’d him and said it can’t be fixed) and my dad just searched youtube, got the Fix with the screws(I can ask him in the morning how) and my first xbox has been RROD free for about.. 3 year now, and my 2nd one for about 6 month. only cost him 10€ which is about.. 13 dollar. And since your warrenty has run out, you might aswell. Not like microsoft do anything to fix it anyway…

So yeh if you can be bother’d just Follow what some other people have said with the screw thing. works like a charm and shouldn’t go wrong again. Peace.

It sucks, but maybe it’ll be a better idea to just buy a new 360. The arcade units are like 200 dollars, and these types of issues are a lot less common in newer models. Plus, you’d get an extra controller, some XBLA games, a fresh warranty, and they have come with 256MB of flash memory and an HDMI port.

That’s only part of the ring. Try unplugging the cords in the back and plugging them back in. Or turn off the 360 and wrap it in a towel for a few hours. If that doesn’t work then you can send your 360 to the manufacturer or whatever and they’ll have it back to you in a few weeks.

you need to screw in the x-clips..cheapsoft doesn’t use good solder so when the thing heats up you loose the contacts. Since your warranty is up you might as well try to fix it on your own.

I recently had to get my Out-of-Warranty Xbox 360 replaced, I just bought an Arcade unit off Ebay for 120 bucks, then my Halo 3 copy broke then I had to replace that as well so that was an additional 50 bucks.

I’ve had this problem so many times, this is my 4th 360, what does that tell you when the fucking Sega CD lasts longer than the 360. Sorry for the loss.

So you play DVDs on your 360? You could get a dvd player at Walmart for maybe 20 bucks now. Those things are cheap as hell.

And yeah, I had this second generation PS2 for almost 7 years now and it has yet to break down and I had played it constantly when I was in high school. Had the 360 for over a year and it got me the red ring when I played Fallout 3 too much apparently.

I gotta say man.. personally I’ve gone through 2 Xbox-360′s myself before calling it quits. I have an Atari from the 80′s that still works to this day! I purchased a Ps3 about 6 months a go and the thing still runs great. If you want reliability I would totally save up for a Playstation 3. I noticed most of the games you play are cross platform anyway so I don’t see it making much of a difference. Good luck with it all!

I’ve fixed this problem so many times it’s not funny. the key seems to be coming up with a more permanent way to keep it working.

I hear the Towel thing works by overheating the console giving it another issue and once it cools down you can play it for the better half of the week before the Ring of Death appears again. There’s two reason’s why I’ll never try this. 1st being that if it does overheat it then they may not send another back when I finally decide to send it in and 2nd Excuse me if i take in the idea with a couple grams of salt if the way I resolve a RRoD is by throwing a fucking towel over it. I own pretty much every major console since the Atari 2600. As of today, the only one I’ve ever had problems with is my Dreamcast, and that problem I fixed myself. However, I do not own a 360. I’ve played my friends’ but was unimpressed and am not willing to take the risk.

I’m lucky to have only gone through one so far. Well, I got my first one in early 2007. It didn’t red ring, but it did start FREEZING with this godawful static noise, and since I only had a few months of warranty left you better believe I sent that sumbitch in.

Well they sent me a brand new one, in the plastic and everything, so that was cool. So far so good. Here’s hoping, cause I’m fairly certain it’s not a Jasper unit.

I think I heard once that 3 lights means it’s overheating. I had the problem and moved it to an open area and it ran perfect for about 2 months before the motherboard shorted out and I decided to NOT pay the 150 they wanted to fix it.

Everyday when i get rdy to start up my 360 i do a little ritual. i start off by petting it and telling it that he is a good boy. next i set up a pillow on the floor, so that if i get a RROD i can drop to my knees and scream “WHY!!!!!”. After that i close my eyes and proceed to push the button. so far so good on this ritual…

I feel your pain. I’ve actually never had the red ring of death, but I’ve had an equally system destroying, but less common problem with my 360. I pretended it got the RROD and got free repairs on my Xbox, which is still working fine for now. But I know of the pain it is to have an expensive as fuck system crap out on you after only a year of owning it. Fucking Microsoft. :(

Hey, I’ve talked with a friend who’s repaired/modded 360s, and he said 9 times out of 10 it’s just the cheap solder they use coming undone. I’m not entirely sure what needs to be done, but apparently it involves opening it up. So if you have a friend who’s good with tech, I suggest mentioning it. It voids the warranty, but if you’re already out, you should be fine.

Also – My warranty ran out and they repaired mine more than once for free. Just set up the shipment thing online and they’ll send you a box. Haven’t charged me before. They’ve just sent me a new system with a free month of Live.

I own a Wii, and I figured that until the PS3 price drops to the same level as a 360, or until the 360 RRoD problem gets solved, I’m not buying either, since apparently neither company wants my money right now. I feel your pain Spoony. I am on my 4th Xbox 360. The firt one had freezing errors, the second one could not read or recognize any of the games I put in the tray, and the third got the red ring of death. I play my PC loads more than my Xbox 360 so it isn’t much of a loss for me.

3 light error? General hardware failure, that sucks. I recommend trying to remove the hard drive and booting with it out and seeing if it goes away.

Google ‘Xbox 360 error codes’ if you want to try repairing it yourself.

Aw, poor Spoony, thats terrible luck. My old Elite was close to doing something similar, freezing after like 2 minutes of gameplay on every game. The nice people at my Gamestop just took a new one out of the box and swapped it to me. I doubt you have such options, Im just lucky that they are nice people and I happen to have befriended most of them.

And yeah, state of the art technology my ass, the damn thing was released in a faulty state and they still havent fully fixed it.

I got the three red lights a month ago and after unplugging it and letting it sit for a while it has worked fine since then. Leave it on for a minute and then unplug it and let it set for another minute then plug it back in and turn it back on. Unless you have an error code that should work.

Get the newer “Jasper” model. Read the label on your power wattage on the back of a XBOX console. If it reads “12.1A” then you have the Jasper model. Which is the mroe refined model than the Zepher model (Which is the 14A) and it runs A LOT cooler.

I’ve had that happen before, I had purchased one of the earliest xbox’s and had it die only a few months ago. It was definitely beyond the initial warranty offered for it, but considering it was a RROD they took it in and replaced it. Honestly, give it a try, it can’t waste anything but some of your time, and since you’re evidently already in hell, you may as well ask the devil to stick a fork in you.

Looks like you’re running a Pro model of 360, judging from the chrome faceplate on the disc tray. So you’ve got (at least) a 20 or 60GB harddrive.

Carefully remove your harddrive and set it aside, and then throw the stupid console away. If you send it in for repairs, they’ll just send you an older, previously-broken but-refurbished console. Which is just going to break again *anyway*. It’s a neverending cycle, because hardware that is prone to RRoD (primarily from heat issues) is going to /continue/ to RRoD because those heat issues cannot be resolved without a complete unit replacement, and whenever you send in a unit for repairs, they actually tend to send you back one that’s been /previously/ repaired. So, even under warranty, if you send in an RRoD’d console, you’re likely to get someone /else’s/ broken and cobbled-together console in return, simply because it’s a faster turnaround.

So – Go to a Best Buy or something, and snag a brand-new 360 Arcade; the kind without any harddrives. In other words, the cheapest 360 you can find. Take it home, slap your old harddrive onto the side, and behold – you should have the /latest/ revision of the hardware, as opposed to years-old hardware that has been repaired over and over and over again. And it costs only slightly more than an out-of-warranty repair anyway. And before you ask – all of your DLC should work, even though your disk is on a brand new console.

Hint on identifying the latest (and quietest, and coolest, temperature-wise) hardware – the Arcade should have an HDMI port, and 256MB of onboard flashram storage. If it doesn’t, then it’s an ancient, high-temperature motherboard design.

I can feel your pain about the air conditioning, my room has not had a functioning AC vent for the past 3 years and it definitely gets up into the 90′s at night in August. Hope you get that part soon.

Frankly I am disgusted that Microsoft still has this issue over 3 years after its release. It makes it quite clear that they are more interested in making money than making a reliable product. I was planning on getting a 360 originally, but after seeing how lax they are in their products I decided to get an upgraded PC instead since nearly all the “Xbox Exclusives” are released on that as well with free internet and updates.

You make a really good point saying that other older consoles like the Sega CD never give you shit but that maybe is the new plan to make more money by making a crappy built console and charging people into buying a new one or keeping on life support the old one. I’m happy that I’m a PC gamer and usually my system problems are virus related or dust related.

Wow, I really feel bad for you. I have yet to go through a RROD, so I don’t have much advice. I do agree with what Esc0bar0ni said: keep the Box upwards instead of sideways. My friend discovered this when his second one went RROD (Luckily they replaced it for free because they reset his warranty), and both times he had been storing them on their sides. I would guess that it has something to do with the airflow; keeping it upright seems to allow air to move through the Box more effectively and avoid overheating.

Speaking of overheating, I can only imagine what it must be like to live in Arizona and lose your AC. I lost mine a few times over the past few years, but seeing as I live in Minnesota, we at least have nights that drop down to 60-70 degrees in the summer. Hope that part arrives soon so you can get that AC back up and running!

(Also, sleek new technology, my ass. I don’t have any of the consoles you have anymore, but my Nintendo Entertainment System still starts up every time I turn it on)

I hate to seem like a conspiracy theorist but Microsoft breaks the Xbox’s that get sent to them. Not in a major way but just enough. When they started offering the warranty the major problem was not enough goop (sorry for no technical terms, its 1 am and im tired) between the heat sync and processor but when it overheats it shuts down the system (the towel method helps a bit by forcing a reboot and after being soo hot the heat sync goop is somewhat redistributed, or so I’m told, so otherwise a quick trip to frys electronics for a quick fix). While I had it open putting the drive in I cleaned the old heat sync crap off and put a bottle of new stuff on so my processor will be good too.

I hate to seem like a conspiracy theorist but Microsoft breaks the Xbox’s that get sent to them. Not in a major way but just enough. When they started offering the warranty the major problem was not enough goop (sorry for no technical terms, its 1 am and im tired) between the heat sync and processor but when it overheats it shuts down the system (the towel method helps a bit by forcing a reboot and after being soo hot the heat sync goop is somewhat redistributed, or so I’m told, so otherwise a quick trip to frys electronics for a quick fix). Actually, that’s a good point. Even if a 360 is out of its /standard/ warranty, an RRoD specifically should be a special case, guaranteed for three years. (I never took advantage of that, because my 360 RRoD’d at three years /and one month/.)

Still, though, sending it in for repairs is essentially a neverending cycle of frustration. The /primary/ cause of RRoD issues is heat – the older systems simply ran too hot. And let’s not forget the broken-as-designed CD tray – I’ve got a large number of mangled discs. That’s largely the reason the “install to harddrive” option even /exists/. :)

Yeah I have another problem. My Xbox just out of no where started getting strange screen display changes like colors turning greenish the later the visual just completely craps out and there nothing i can do to fix it. Little Bro had his Xbox sent for fixing, too, though I’m not sure if it had the rings of death or not. The good bonus we got was 1 month free of Xbox Live (Silver), so I managed to get MvC2 and Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, both fun games, even if one’s not into the minor changes and updates.

The Xbox 360 is like a laptop, it overheats very very easily, it should always be in a vertical position with enough open space for airflow, it shouldn’t work when it dosent have to work. So the most probable thing that happened is it overheated.

Secondly it’s an old version with outdated 90nm dies for the GPU CPU etc… they tend to overheat easily and RROD.

Mark Reddman knows the down-and-dirty way to open an Xbox 360 and prevent the damn thing from overheating. It’s the best way I know of to prevent future RRoDs without having to pay Microsoft $100 every time it breaks down.

The Red Ring of Death isn’t good (why do they call it a ring It only 3/4tth of a ring ah well).

I think the warrenty starts over after you send in your 360. So it is three years starting from when you got your 360 back. But I am not sure about that.

You shouldnt need special treatment for a console M$ fucked up big time on the first 360′s, and apparently later ones too. I guess i’ve been lucky i got my Xbox 360 just after it came out in 2005, i have a old 20gb premium they don’t make anymore, and i’ve used it a lot, but it still works perfectly, but then again i have it atleast 30 cm from the other consoles and the power cord goes directly into the wall socket, since i heard going through surge protectors might contribute to overheating, though that’s only a claim, however i’d suggest a Elite 360 since they use a better cooling system and another chip, think i might upgrade to elite soon, not having HDMI sucks :P

My xbox has been working fine since release :s
But i did get the red ring of death once. However it was just that the video cable wasn’t completely in.
Check if it is completely plugged it.

There are alternatives to sending back to Microsoft. There are people who can fix almost any xbox 360 issue except maybe a drive error and can do it for far far less than M$

Now I am a PS3 owner and in all honesty the 360 and PS3 ar both tied with the same processor speed etc etc. To date my PS3 hasn’t even paused let alone crashed once since I got it on the first day of its release here in the UK. (Thats about 2 years and a month or two.) You have no idea how many part time jobs I had to tie down to get the £400. Anyway, to date XBOX360 seems to be the only console that tells you when its going to die, if it has four different ways of dieing indicated by the rings then there must be a dormant technical issue hidden in every single one. My friends which add up to about 14+ 360′s have all had to send theirs off to be fixed. Why haven’t they tried fixing the issue with new ones or to a greater extent actually call them back to fix them then ship them out again WITH NO CHARGE (But we all know they would charge us anyway) All I’m saying is, couldn’t they have made sure the damn things worked after a certain period of time before shipping it out. Slow and steady wins the race perhaps in this case??

is that spot where you showed the red ring the spot where you keep it? I’m not an expert but that doesn’t really look well ventilated to me, what with it being surrounded by other heatproducing appliances with minimal clearance in between…
Anyways, you sure the warranty doesn’t renew itself when you get a new xbox? I don’t know how they handle it over there but here when you get something through a warranty the warranty renews itself with the new item.

Funny story ’bout older consoles lasting forever, friend of mines N64 used to live in a plastic box under the fish tank and one day the fish tank sprung a leak filling the box about 3/4 of the way up. The N64 was submerged in the water for 2 or so hours before they noticed. After they dried all of the games, controllers and the console itself they all continued to work perfectly fine.

I think alot of the time xbox 360s get the red rings is when they are placed on its side (not standing up). I have had mine for about 2 years and its not an elite and its never broke, but one time i did get the red rings but thats only cuz when i moved it i placed it on its side so i unpluged everything and stood it up now it works, i keep my xbox standing on two cabinets next to my tv with a gap in between them i also make sure the room isnt to hot.

I have had 2 Xbox’s now but in MS defence the first one got peed on by my dog so… Mine was working fine then I went into the kitchen to get a drink and came back and the screen was all scrambled but the music was still on. I turned it off then back on and got 1 single red light (botton right I belive) so it may be a diffrent problem then everyone else I don’t know. What sucks is mony is tight in my house so buying a PS3 is not a option as I own tons of 360 games and just can’t afford a new system so I guess I will have to just wait it out till I can afford to get my 360 fixed. Oh well such is life.

i think the 360 took one look at the Dune dvd and thought “fuck you!!” and just like crapped out mate lolz. Just goes to show you how cheap and shitty Microsoft is to its customers. Check your local craigslist. My friend bought a red ringed 360 for 30 bucks(he knew it was broken) and had a guy on craigslist repair it for another 30 bucks. Not only did he fix it but he upped the power on the fans so it wouldn’t red ring again. It’s loud as fuck now but it works great.

That’s the great thing about 360s. They all come with a pre-packaged game called “Borrowed Time”. PS3 is the overall better system. Time was it was the cheapest bluray player on the market. Not anymore of course. Saw a basic bluray player at Walmart for $98. Anyway, 360 does have a FAR better online community. I’m talking marketplace and such which is why I went with it. I know I’m going to be kicking myself incredibly hard when God of War 3 comes out. Frakin’ PS3 exclusive! :(

Check your local craigslist for xbox repair, i found a guy in my town that fixes the RROD for 30 bucks, and sells refurbished 360′s for around 80 bucks, plus he bought my old one for parts.

I know how depressing that is. I mean, I don’t own a 360, but yesterday my computer broke down and it won’t function without crashing. And it has to do with it’s memory, so It’s nothing I had control over. And I treated it as best as I could. Don’t force yourself to suffer through SWAT 4 if you don’t have to. I think reviewing a game you enjoy would wake you feel better.

Yeah, that’s where we’re at. Mine started breaking down a month before MVC2 came out, and now, it seems it won’t move again. But it broke timely, just 1 week after I got a 1 year Live Gold account, so getting a new one is a waste of that. Grrr!

I think Microsoft rushed out with the Xbox-360 and that means more faulty hardware in the console.
But look at all the old consoles, they still work.
I still have a SNES, N64, an old Xbox, a PS1, a slime line PS2, an Atari ST and a Gameboy Advance to name a few and they still work!

I only had my 360 for a year and it had the red ring of death over 5 times. The first time only happened within a month of owning the stupid thing.

And like you, Spoony, I take uber care of my consoles. My NES, SNES, N64… all the old consoles I still have continues to work unlike the 360 that keeps crapping out on me.

I don’t remember exactly, but I think that if you find a “guy” he can fix your x-box so that it will be like 200% less likely to RRoD. It has something to do with Microsoft using cheap parts and if you replace a few key components with quality ones, you’ll no longer see red.

I don’t know if this was mentioned (I am not reading 243 comments), but mine recently got the red ring of death (after a weird delay, too) and was recently out of warranty. So I call up MS to see if they have something about this and if there’s a work around, otherwise I would use it as trade in for a store (I didn’t make it sound threatening, just said matter of factly and calmly). The guy who I was talking with apparently was allowed to give me a complentary repair, basically giving me a free repair and a brand new warranty period (one year), so yay!

If anything, try for that. If you sound calm and maybe mention the possible trade in, they’ll likely give you a free repair. It worked for me.

Sorry to hear about your system. I’m just curious but have you tried looking for any independent video game stores in your area? I know that some do system repairs, so it can’t hurt checking them out. It’s not like you’re risking that much on a repair if your system is already a $300 paperweight already and it’s cheaper than buying a new system.

BTW, if you want to watch DVDs, it’s cheaper to get a used PS2 if you don’t have one lying around.

Yeah, I am on my sixth Xbox 360 right now. It sucks, but at least Microsoft is replacing them without any problems. I have always been up an running again within a week. I guess they decided to say “screw the warranty period, we screwed up so we’ll fix them all.”

It is funny how all our 15 and 20 year old Nintendo consoles are still working. I can’t get enough Super Mario RPG on my SNES.

I have an NES thats probably as old as me (nearly 19 years old) and it still works, it just needs some rubbing alcohol on the games. These new, advanced, high-price super graphic capable systems apparently don’t last as long, perhaps less can be more but then again less is whats hurting the Wii in its game line-up. Shoot, I have an Atari 2600 that still works! I just can’t find the plugs that I need.

yah my xbox broke about 4 weeks ago and this keeps happening to me. Its not the red ring of death its the stupid disk drive that keeps breaking. I went through 2 of them like this. I don;t get it my ps1, ps2, gamecube, and ps3 all are fine but my xbox keeps breaking and now it is in Texas getting fixed.

I hade to pick it apart and reconect the processors which will come lose after a while of regular use.
It’s a good idea to add new coolant paste to the processors for the old one is just a cheap pice of shit mix.
With new paste it will disperse heat more effectivly and the exesive amount of heat the console produces is the nr 1 cause of these problems with the Xbox360. Heat+cheap parts= Rrod
Reconecting the processors have like 80% chance of solving a Rrod problem.
Now there are tons of videos on Youtube that describes how to it.

You may have 15-25 games and with 100% chance that sucker is going to breakdown in next 4 years and in maybe 4-6 years they will make new Xbox, lets say “Xbox 3D” and they stop making 360 and when you lovely 360 will finally don´t work anymore, your left with 15-25 games (all good games) and broken machine that microsoft build.

I actually got a system error for the first time ever yesterday, and have one red light, not 3 (code E 76). Contacting tech support resulted in them saying “we don’t actually know what the issue is, but send it in and we’ll fix it for $99 + shipping to and fro because your warranty expired a little while ago!”. All the info I’ve read says that this error is related to the ethernet port/chip, but they use the same code for “unknown”, so…who knows?

And that’s the reason why i still don’t own a 360: I wanted to buy one as soon as they have sorted out their hardware issues. It may be a prejudice but I still see too many RRODs happening all around me. Sure, other consoles fail too, but they usually evolve into something more reliable over it’s lifespan.

That really blows man. I don’t understand consoles, back in the day weren’t cutting edge but they were built to last. At least in my case my 360 lasted 3 years before it bit the dust, so might as well buy the basic model and put all the peripherals that came with your older one on the new one. That’s how these console makers get your money anyway they build it so it busts up past the warranty. Then sap your cash. :/

Unless you never use it, the replacement will die too. The 360 has the worst design possible: the cpu and gpu both have relatively high TDP, have tiny passive heatsinks and are very close to each other.
Using a better thermal paste will help, but unless the stock paste was applied by Apple, the temperatures will go down by 5 degrees celsius max. The only way to prevent overheating is with a legitimate aftermarket heatsink.
And anyone thinking any “tricks” work should try building a computer. Processors die from overheating because at high temperatures, electrons will leak and will alter the crystal structure of the silicon.

go to youtube and look for the fix, you have to open up the xbox and replace the fan. That fixed the red ring when this particular person and since warranty is gone, you really have nothing to lose. Good luck Spoony!

The RROD is the only reason I refuse to get a 360, it makes the dreamcast look like a god in comparison to how long it lives (DCs break down in a couple years usually) Microsoft doesn’t seem to care though, if they had, they would still be making original xbox games and would have fixed the RROD.

Hey Spoony. Been following you for a while, and I think you’re really funny. What’s not funny is “that little sumbitch” the Red Ring. I’ve gotten it before, and it just seems to happen at random. My newer early 08 model didn’t last as long as my friends launch 360. His RRoD’d in the middle of Dead Space so I finished it first, haha! Anyway, look for a local PC repair shop that can do the “x-clamp mod.” Basically, the x shaped brackets that hold the heatsinks in place are too tight, and cause the mainboard to bend to the point where the solder that connects the chips to the board cracks. Oh, and get some nice thermal paste too. The MS shit sucks.

I not a fan of the Xbox 360; loved the Xbox. I would be interested in getting one, but I just don’t want to deal with these faulty build issues. I never understood why people live with what I think is an unacceptable amount of defect, but f it were any other product, they’d demand a recall or just not buy the thing in the first place. Microsoft should just stick to software which you can patch unlike the 360. Don’t fret Spoony, your PS3 won’t fail…. knock on wood.

What I do, and what hasn’t proven me wrong yet, is to get an external attachable cooling unit for your 360. I did that after the first time mine overheated and it has lasted about two years without any issues. I’d suggest getting the Intercooler that I use.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but according to Gameinformer, they’ve sold 28 million 360′s as of a few months ago, and 8 million have failed so far. Almost a third of their products are defective, yet they’re still in business. Only Microsoft could pull this off.
I’m on xbox 360 number four. The last two lasted less than a month each. Once I quit FFXI, I’m trading this load and it’s games in for a PS3.

i recomend you get your 360 out of that little cubby its in. a 360 is like a claustraphobic (correct?) child. it needs plenty of room to breath and cool down so i suggest if you dont have a carpet floor, put it down there away from all the other wires, or get it its own little stand.

That’s a serious bummer! I don’t know why some people have gone through 2-3 360′s while others still have their original and it works perfectly. Either way, DVD players are so freakin cheap these days it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a $30 player on hand for such emergencies.

You just moved, right? The three rings sometimes pop up when you change power sources for the 360. You might just need to monky around with a couple of cables if that is the issue. Check the power supply button on the back. If its green all you can do is send it in, but it it’s orange or red or off then read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906102.

And by the way, I am fine thank you for asking- my 360 recently went through a problem where the sodder holding the GPU to the motherboard clonked out. I could’ve fixed it myself with a roll of pennies and a screwdriver, but extended warranty and free Microsoft Points for MVC2 (suck it Playstation3) was too good to pass up considering the repair center is in Texas and I live in Louisiana.

I don’t know if someone has already pointed this out, but those Xboxes’ problems are that their amperage is way too high. The new (arcade) model runs @ about 12amps. The older ones run about 15-16 and the 1st gen consoles run @ 19. Microsoft’s R&D department sucks and I wonder how this ever got past the drawing board. My advice is to get a new arcade (just keep ur HDD) and not shell out to repair that one.

If you sent the Xbox off to get repaired once, the warranty should renew for another 3 years when you get it back from Microsoft.

That sucks the big one, Spoony! My first 360 red ringed it about a year after I got it. Sent that cocksucker off for repairs. About 3 months later the repaired/replacement one crapped out on me too. I said fuck it and bought a brand new one. That one is still going strong thankfully. Currently rocking some Too Human. Not nearly as bad as all the reviews had led me to believe by the way!

If I remember right, Microsoft just replaces 360s that die by the RRoD no questions asked for free now.
Just call up xbox and navigate through the stupid voice thing, and they’ll send you a box to send it back in.

I know this because my friend got RRoD’d recently and they replaced it for free.
Normally what you said would be true, but apparently there was some major lawsuit action and now they replace them for free. =P

This is why I don’t understand why people put so much stock in the 360.

I was a huge Xbox fan and after I heard about all the issues the 360 was having, I decided to pass on getting it until they did something about it After they ‘helped fix the issues’, I decided to purchase one. I bought it used, but it was only a few months old and was a ’08 model, so that shouldn’t have any issues right?

Boy was I wrong.

The system was no more than a year and a half old when it RRoD’ed. Heck, I probably play my PS3 more than my 360 and I still have yet to have any issues with my PS3. Truth be told, it’s a much better DVD player anyways, or at least I prefer the functions they have for DVD playing. What’s worse is the idiot that had his system for only a few months got the warranty on his system and after talking to Microsoft for roughly 20 minutes, I would of ended up having to pay 120 dollars. Thankfully, I was able to get a good deal through a local video game store and I have another system without a warranty. Keep in mind that I’m anal about my systems and I’ve been gaming since the NES days.

Hi, I’m a long time fan of the site, and all of our employees visit the site while on break, so much so that we put you up on the big screen whenever something new comes up. I run a computer repair service in Albany, GA and we do the bulk of red ring fixes around the area. I’m not sure if anyone else has already mentioned this, but the only way to guarantee that this doesn’t happen is to slap your 360 components into a better case. You can prevent just about all of the issues you’ll have with your 360 by ripping that bad boy apart right of of the box and slapping it into a PC case with better ventilation. They even make special cases just for 360′s that are pretty quiet and sexy.

When you get your next one, or get that one fixed, I suggest you do that right away and save yourself a lot of trouble.

Here’s some advice to avoid this in the future. Take a box (like from a VHS tape) and put that under your 360 so that all of the vents are exposed. My brother has had 4 red rings but he did this and it hasn’t screwed up in about 8 months.

If I may, I might suggest getting an 360 Elite, if you can afford it. I have one and its been working great. Hasnt crashed at all, and neverr once got the red ring. I know this probably wont help, but hey, thought I might offer something.

Lol, it could be worse. Two months ago my 360, which I’ve had for three-four years without any unexplained RRoDs (someone kicked it once, and I had to get it repaired, but that doesn’t count) was stolen, along with all my games.

Don’t feel bad man, it’s happened to a LOT of people. I would suggest not wasting any more money on it. I’d recomend going PS3 and getting an XB1 if you have last generation games that you still wont to play.

If you’re feeling like tinkering a bit you can probably get it up and running by doing the xclamp fix if not youre probably better off just getting a new box.

This is the most complex tear down of the xbox360. If you’re somewhat handy you can do this yourself. The xbox is basically build to get a RRoD.
This is not supposed to be a Fanboyflame; i myself am a PC Fanboy and therefore, build my Stuff myself.

However, i would never place a heatsink as tiny as the xbox360 one onto the GPU, only to place the Drive right on top of it to completely block the Airflow.

Nothing against the Xbox360; great Games there. But i have to wonder what the Microsoft Engineers where thinking.

That’s terrible. My 360 (which up until a few days ago worked perfectly) decided to stop working with an E-74 error. (one red quarter lit up, apparently has to do with the video chip fucking up) GG, Microsoft.

Ah, I feel for you man, I’ve had the ring and now that the extended warrenty that they gave me expired, the driver had died..(Another common upon the literal LIST of xbox 360 problems that can occur) 100 Bucks for that too…I feel your pain man. my ps3 plays regular dvds(its a 40 gig) but the only thing that sucks about no backwards compatibility in any of the ps3s unless you have the 60 gig version which they don’t sell anymore.

If your ps3 does play old ps2 and ps1 games were do you fit memory card and controllers?

Both my 360 and PS3 had hardware failures. What sucked was only the 360 was under the extended warranty. The PS3 wasn’t. I had to pay 120 bucks to send it back to Sony… basically I paid $120 for a new PS3. That’s what they gave me, so my PS3 must have been beyond repair. Oddly enough when I sent in my 360 (entirely for free, no shipping fee requirement either) I got the same one back, running just fine (I know because of how discolored the original white faceplate is on it).

Thankfully the PS3 I was sent back was also the 60GB model that played PS2 games (a rarity), so I’m guessing Sony has some on reserve in case someone’s current 60GB PS3 bricks. I would have been pissed if they sent me one of their newer ones.

I never had anything close to this, and it’s been about a year since I got it. I’ve heard that the 360 gets the red ring if you play it too much, but this is just pure speculation.

I had my first 360 die on me one month shy of my Best Buy 2 year warranty running out. Thankfully they replaced it with an HDMI model and gave me a new 2 year warranty and I had like $50 in store credit left over. But still I shouldn’t have to worry about my system dying on me all of a sudden. But you said you were going to watch DVDs and I noticed you have a PS3 there. You should have just watched them on the PS3. I do wish you luck and hope you can get your system up and running soon.

My playstation 3 (the superior system, just lacking as many games, but let’s face it, most of em suck anyways, the good ones are on the PS3 as well) is working JUST fantastically :) never had any problems ONCE. I believe there was this guy that was working with Microsoft had been actually testing it for problems when they first developed it. He gave it the ok, after confirming “There was no problems.” After all this happened, they immediately fired the guy for costing them millions of dollars. That guys going to have a rough time finding a job.

just do the x-clamp fix, buy it from ebay for 10$ with the screwdrivers and nylon washers and some heatsink paste and thats it, you get a pdf where everythis is explained, worked for me, fixed my RROD

I have been living in that ninety degree room with a box fan that is 12 inches, down in DE. With around 100% humidity. We have 2 air conditioners in the house, in the downstairs, and none of them make my room upstairs right next to the stairs where I sleep any more bearable. I know what your feeling. This night is the first time I actually slept comfortable with it being around 70 degrees. I do not own an X box 360, but I’m looking to get one soon but with all the red rings I may reconsider again.

Spoony, not sure if this, um, fix, has been mentioned yet, but buy a new Xbox from Wal-Mart, put your old one in the box then turn around and return it for a refund. It works, Wal-Mart has an excellent return policy. A friend that worked there once told me about someone getting a refund on a box full of dishes that turned out to be full of rocks.

My system was unopened and it still was going to cost me 120 bucks to get mine repaired. Their RROD policy isn’t as open as you may think it is. I spent close to half an hour talking with this guy and the best I could work it up to was 120, which is still absurd cause it’s not my fault in the first place.

Microsoft really should start fixing the RROD rather than other crap we don’t need.

On topic, yeah, the Red Ring sucks ass. The fact that Microsoft continues to push out the 360 while knowing the high tendency to malfunction like that is just not good for anyone, especially not the consumer.

But, all of it makes Microsoft’s wallet heavier, so they’re probably thinking “Who cares!”

Just thought of a couple of things you can do Spoony (if you ever read this far into the comments). First of all, I heard of guides online that tell you how to fix your Xbox 360. The other thing is look on craigslist for repair places. I can’t say for certain that there will be places in your area but it’s worth looking into instead of buying a whole new system.

I think they made it so you can get the RROD (and the E74 error) free replaced forever since it’s a manufacturing defect, but they just stopped sending out the boxes to ship it to them for free. They’ll send you a label but you have to use your own box. Free fix, though, and yeah, it’s a few weeks. That sucks; I got mine used and I think it was already repaired. It’s something with the solder on the motherboard and an undersized heat sink that doesn’t do a good enough job to keep the solder from melting.

Sorry about your 360 spoony.I just got a PS3 so I wouldn’t have to deal with these problems.

You know you can buy a kit for fixing the RROD for like 15-20 dollars right?

All you need is a soldering iron and the knowledge to use it, it’s not complicated at all to install.

Obviously I wouldn’t suggest it unless you are out of warranty but I have never heard of anyone screwing up an install of a RROD kit.

PS bought an xbox360 as you did after 9 months of joy red ring he didn’t let it get to him.So he sent his back and was happy again a month later. until 2 weeks later………. it happened again during CODMW. he was angry but not to disappointment so he sent it back and another month went by.He was playing oblivion whet the xbox froze. oh it sent him into a spiraling fury when it turned red he had the xbox no less than a month.He decided to trade all his games in he had it he got a hammer and a screwgun
and destroyed the 360. the end

Looking back. I’m actually glad that my first 360 RRODed. The thing never worked all that well. Random disk read errors plagues me since day one. After the warranty expired, the thing started having trouble reading the games at all. Finally, last summer, the thing just died. Still within the extended warranty for RROD, I sent it in and… I’m not sure if it’s refurbished or new (looked new), but the console they sent me as a replacement works wonderfully. Unfortunately, I’m fucked if this one RRODs, but hopefully that doesn’t happen too soon. Sorry about yours, Spoony.

Sorry bout your 360 buddy that sucks I am on number two. Did go PS3 exclusive for a bit but no games or no DLC for games like Fallout 3 even though they available on 360. If one dies I got the other really can’t lose and I won’t miss out on any games anymore either,

Wow, our Xbox packed in too. We have to wrap it in towels every few weeks because we’re not paying the £80 Microsoft is demanding (afterall, we could get a brand new one at that price).
Since your Xbox is out of waranty, you could try to take it to a repair shop to get it fixed. It won’t be as expensive and they could probably get the job done faster.

You’re totally right about the old consoles that still work, though. We have two SNESes that work perfectly. And I must have dropped my old Game Boy like a bazillion times, but that still works. I guess they just don’t build consoles like they used to =/

M$ used to stick by that nonsense, but not anymore. Sony lost a fairly large class action lawsuit over the Disc Read Error fiasco w/ their PS2. And frankly, M$ would rather you have a working console so you can continue to buy games for it than for you to not have one and not buy games.

Also, the more recent 360s are a bit more reliable than the old ones. I LOL when people talk about how magical the PS3 is, it’ll never break down! haha, wrong. They have a fairly high failure rate as well, it’s just not nearly as high as the 360′s. All cd-based systems have these kinds of problems, but the PS2 and the 360 were both made sho-diddly-oddy. I’ve got several busted Sega CD units, for instance. The early PS1 units had an overheating problem, the Dreamcasts died all the time, etc etc. That’s because cd parts are a lot more touchy then cartridge stuff. There’s not a thing you can’t touch inside an SNES, unlike any CD or DVD unit.

This is an overheating problem. This happened to me yesterday so I unplugged it and pluged it in and then it work just fine. So just try that. Or let it cool down and don’t play it for a while.

I’ve replaced my Xbox 3 fucking times. I’ve had my SNES for like fifteen years and it still plays games perfectly. Isn’t that sad?

You know how there are those stages of the red ring? How it starts off at one quarter of the ring lights up green, and then two, and so on and so forth?

Well, I suggest you just turn your XBox off after one quarter pops up and let it cool. If all else fails, open up your XBox, remove the memory, and do the whole master reset thing.

Hey Noah this idea might sound stupid but hear me out! Stand the xbox vertically so the power button is near the bottom. by placing on its side you’re blocking 2 vents so your xbox is overheating.

It could be that it’s gotten over used. I got my 360 the week it came out and played it from that Sunday to about Friday without pause and it started on fire. The same w/ ma PS3, only it asploded and took out my $55000 HDTV Flat screen. Regardless, I was pissed I didn’t get my camera to record it and post it on YT.

Still, it has to do with how old the hardware is, cause if its one of the first it has fairly poor hardware and Microsoft found that out ~2 1/2 hours before national launch. (Insert FAIL! here)

you dumbfucks, the PS3 is still a pile of miserable shit, no games, no DLC, and it’s still goddamn expensive compared to the 360. I own both systems, but i gotta be honest. i’ll replace my 360 when it breaks, but when my PS3 breaks, i’ll just say fuck it, cause the PS3 is not worth it. i regret buying it. oh and fuck the wii, too. it’s worse than the PS3, i sold my wii, less than 72 hours after i bought it, it’s so over hyped, and boring as all hell. all of the new consoles suck, but the 360 is the reigning king, hands down. but worse comes to worse i’ll bury all three of the new systems and go back to good fun consoles like PS2, N64, Dreamcast, and NES.

I have an xbox 360 elite and it constantly gets overheated (2 red lights) i’ve bought a fan and that doesn’t seem to work it works fine when i open a window but once summer’s over I can’t keep doing that so does anyone have any ideas they’d be much appreciated

So true with old consoles. I too have an elder genesis sitting in my closet. I plugged it up some years ago and it worked perfectly fine. All I needed to do was to dust the cartridges a bit and voila. Even my ps2, bought back in 2004 is still running fine. I have been temptated to get my hands on this gen consoles but hearing these technical malfunctions always manages to push me back… as I’m no way a technical wiz.

It’s funny with all the electric equipment nowdays, as the technology advances, the shorter their lifespan gets.
For example after mobiles got color upgrade and cameras and bluetooth their battery life has cutted down to half… And even getting a new battery isn’t worth it. Better just to buy a whole new phone. I bought new battery for my 3 year old nokia. Less than 3 months… and my phone runs low on juice within a day. Le sigh.

Get a ps3. I had gone through two xboxs as well and I said fuck it and got a ps3 and never looked back.

It is hard for me to sympathize with people who buy 360s while knowing the problem of quality.

I actually just got the RRoD a little after this video was posted and I was crushed. I did a little google research though and managed to fix it without towels or anything. I had to open it up which intimidated me but all it involved was making a better mounting for the heatsyncs on the xbox with some screws and washers. I was so amazed and proud of myself when it actually worked. I’d encourage you to try it.

Hey man try this if you get a New X-box open the casing and submerge it in cocking oil In the style of “cool your PC with cocking oil” , remember to isolate the casing and let your cables and impute and output stuff be free from oil. I Hypothesize its because of the heat and some cooling system of your Xbox is burning out and that will result in one of your transistors burning.

You must understand in our days we are riding the silicon limit to the max , we are at the limits of silicon computing and without radical cooling (water , oil ) you will not go on , the fans fail fast. In the old days consoles/computers didn’t need cooling , check it out open up your old console casing and try to find a cooling unit. It all ended with the N64 with whose cooled by a steal plate attached to it now you have air cooling with every console. The old ones will not fail so easy like today’s ones because of that.

Besides if it fails after its expiration date you will give more
$$$$ to the producer by getting a new one , why would they fix the problem if it brings them money ???

I understand that not everyone is so crafty like me however if you would like to have a console that will not fail get it in oil that will fix the problem for ever.

Google “cool your PC with oil” or youtube it and you will see how to do it or get someone to do it for you .

PS : I advise you to do it on a new one the old is dead , use double or triple isolation you don’t wont to have 200C oil spilled somewhere dude.

Not to say these consoles are reliable, but looking at that picture for two seconds I can tell you what the problem is. That spot is completely unsuitable for an Xbox 360. It needs to be an an open shelf: no shelf above it, no other devices crammed in around it. With the thermodynamic nightmare (read: oven) you’re creating by keeping it it that spot, it’s no wonder this isn’t your first RRoD.

No, Spoony, don’t send it in. Hop on Ebay and get a refurbished one, you can get it for less than the repair. I bought mine for $70 including shipping and I saw many more.

I thought i had got the red ring of death once but the problem was the scart cable thing that goes in to the xbox 360. It was loose. After my panicattack i tried to take the cables in and out then it worked agan.

Oh, that’s nothing. All of my electric equipment breaks down within six months after purchase, and six months later again, and again and again.

I stopped buying new stuff because it’ll break down anyway, and you can sometimes get used stuff with warranty, at least you can over here. In the Netherlands.

That’s fucked up. The same thing happened to me, I was trying to watch The Office and it just fucking died. The room I have had it in, is generally cool and dry at all times, so I never needed a piece of shit cooling system (which if the system needs it…why do we have to pay for it? That’s bullshit.), so the problem probably isn’t a heating issue at all. It just means that the system itself is a pile of shit. This 360 is over 2 years old, so I thought I had gotten lucky with my purchase. Wrong.

Spoony man look on xbox.com you can get the red ring of death fixed for free even if it’s out of warranty. I did and i got mine the very first year xbox360 came out and i didn’t get the extended warranty.

Dude that sucks. My 360 has done that twice but it fixed itself after I turned it off for a couple hours. Both times were within the first three months I had it :P. Since then I never had a problem.

Even after I got my Macbook :D.

Oh, and both times it happened I was playing Halo 3, or was about to.

Well I’ve experienced the same thing my self.
For obvious reasons I used something to cover it from dust. Bad decision I figured when the Red ring appeared.
Not the one with three stars around, but two. The problem is, I tried to cool it down for at least 24 hours if not even more, but still no result. It just died.
I still had some warranty left though. But serious, I was so pissed that I went to the store and bought my self the Elite version.
Not that it have less faults, but for the record I think it’s better then to send that box for some lousy repairs that will cost more then it’s worth. I mean what possible chance won’t there be, that the machine will broke shortly there after.
I hate the high fault score from Microsoft, as obvious they didn’t worked on their home lesson well enough.

So my advice, bust it, bye a Elite, get a new three year service, and also make sure to visit the support and ask for that removable memory cable. For obvious reasons it’s for free, but you can’t retrieve it in the local store. I just used my memory card my self. But, I hadn’t that much on my old one.

I wish better luck on whatever you’ll decide.

Spoony, I’m glad your smart about the towel trick. The Towel Trick is the worst thing to do to a 360. It fries the CPU and it only last several days. There are other ways of getting it to work again, best I think is the xclamp method.

I am on my 2nd 360. First one was refurbished from a company who didnt fix it right, and my 2nd one I’ve had for 5 months and it still works fine as it has a custom air vent on the top and I keep it in a cool place.

Don’t buy one on ebay. They seem cheap but thats because they were already RRoD and someone just fixed it and said it works. Plus I think Microsoft can fix a 360 RROD for free

I can tell you how to fix it…. in 1 or 3 hours…

The whole concept of the Red Ring of Death really just pisses everyone off. I must say that the location is rather tight, not allowing enough open room for it to vent. I actually have a cooling system for my computer [a simple plate with small fans and much room between the system and the top of the table/desk], and I have found it to work well with almost anything. Keeping it in an open area and using the cooling unit really does help. This computer has been kicking for over a decade, only plagued by the lack of space to use for gaming.

And, I loooove to play the old systems, too. However, for some reason, I tend to play my old NES a lot. The Olympics is always fun for some reason [with the running pad and all], and it gives me a reason to get off the couch [along with every single Wii game I own, including couch ones like SSBB]. Just keep your cool. I blew a fuse when my a copy of WWF Smackdown for my PS1 shattered immediately after I got it [my PS1 just barely expiring in its Warrentee...]. I literally took a hammer to a tree, screaming “I WILL KILL YOU SOUL!” Yes, I did that many years ago. Just look where I am now. I think that I would take a sword to the tree if my newer systems [almost all just expiring in Warrentee] die. But, whatever, it’s just a game. I find writing to be an enjoyable substitute [loses 5 man cards] if anything goes under [has 3 returned].

Just keep your cool when it happens, Spoony. Know that you have a masive fan-base that is supporting you.

I got a odd sense of deja vu after watching your video. The same exact same thing happened to me this July! My 360 got the red ring of death for the second time and it happened a few months after my warranty expired. I kept thinking about how it wasn’t fair since I take good care of all my other video games & consoles. (Which all still work!) I haven’t sent the Xbox for repairs yet because I really don’t want to pay Mircosoft for fixing a console which shouldn’t keep breaking down in the first place.

God, that sucked. I was pissed when my Elite got 1 ring after the hardware scaler chip copped out, while playing fucking Guitar Hero 3! It leads me to believe Microsoft are an evil corporation, since they wont deal with hackers taking peoples gamertags, and they dont answer my desired questions, as well as treat you like an utter retard.
Hope I can play you on Xbox Live sometime, that’d be great.

hey spoony i can fix it if you send it to me. i have thermal compound and the knowledge of how to fix it. the same thing happened with my computer. the thermal compound wore out and the processor no longer had a way to transfer heat to the heatsink. its quick its painless and only cost you to ship it.

I have an old brick PS2 that has never broke down. =] granted X-box games are better, Kingdom Hearts ftw.

I agree with other posters about the location of the xbox being a cause of the red ring.

I do have another option that you may like.

The game stores sell a booster fan device that you plug into the back of the xbox.

It has 3 extra fans that increase the cooling action of the system.

Use the PS3 fool!

I’ve dropped systems (PS1, N64, Gameboy; I threw that in anger a few time; Game cube PS2, PS3, Wii) and they all still work. I’m even missing the front of my PS2 disk tray (DAMN YOU BROTHER!!!!) and it still works.
I blame the amount of time they spent on the system so they get a head start on Wii and PS3.

Sorry about your Xbox 360. Microsuck should offer you a warranty for this type of failure (at least 2 if not 3 years). Don’t bother repairing it yourself. The heat cracks some of the binders holding the components together in the console and so the components can start moving into places they shouldn’t be in.

On the other hand, you have SNES there. Very nice. Notice that those never fail?

With a name like 'Xbox 360', you know you'll do a 180 when you box yourself in your room to play extreme games, but you'll eventually come full circle to buy another one soon. The name itself implies that you'll eventually have to go back to start, the manufacturers will collect another hundred, and you'll go back around until monopoly brings you back to “Reighd O'e” (I think it sounds cooler than Ring-O-Death).
It might be done on purpose! The factories make bad consoles with good games so that you keep suckering in to keep re-buying or repairing the console.

I went through one of my xboxes as well, i ironically loaned it to my uncle while HIS WAS BROKEN and it broke in his possession.

Of course i was pretty pissed off about that however they replaced it and he bought a new box for himself, my replacement hasn't died yet but when it does i will probably get a PS3.

I'm not sure exactly how long I've had my 360, at least 2 to 3 years now, and I am so glad I havent had the unfortunate luck fo many to recieave the red ring of death. I've had it freeze afew times. I have seen the a partial ring, only when the power goes out and if its on. but it still worked. I'm sorry Spoony, be strong.

Had it happen to me, I sold my 360 on kreigs list after it happened the second time, and then I bought a PS triple, havent had a problem ever since.

To be honest, the PS3 is a better DVD player anyway.

I’ve had a PS2 for at least seven years, and the only problem I had was easily fixed with a swiss army knife. My PS3 has never had problems at all.
