It’s happened again.
Aw, sucks man.
Well if you’re willing to put the effort in you could always drag your PC downstairs, hook that into the the TV and watch Dune that way.
Mine just did the same thing now that the warranty expired…. CONSPIRACY!!!!!!!
Don’t let Bill Gares come between you and Dune!
Dang. My Xbox is approaching its first birthday, I’ll keep an eye out.
That TV is AWSOME!! How does it feel to move away from that 1″ at the old place :D Anywho, sorry to hear about your xbox, I’m currently on my 6th 360, and the harddrive broke once as well (so 7 f’ing times man!) And I’m not hosting raveparty’s on it either -.- Hope you love it at the new place, it looks like EPIC.
I dont know how this substandard product quality has gone unchecked for so long. To be honest spoony, if microsoft makes shitty consoles then dont use them, they dont deserve to get reviewed.
Also: you’re hair’s lookin’ great recently – you had it cut?
What the fuck is it with “state of the art” technology. I have a Nokia 3310 phone which is like one of the oldest phones you can get, I’ve had it for about 5-6 years and it still works totally fine where as my friends will show my there new phone and in about 3 months whine that its broken
Notorious xbox problem bites you in ass again? Second or Third time?
I always though you got the 3 year extension after it broke once.
I also aquired the ring, of the red variety, a few days ago. Naturally a mere month after the extended warranty expired. Hell to the yes.
I’m fine Spoony. Same old, same old. That sorta stuff. Don’t have a X-Box but I bet I’ll get one to enjoy the RRoD.
Modern day production, is all that is sorry man.
Microsoft needs to get there stuff together they set what 1 billion dollars aside for this back in like 2003, or something like that and have already used all of that money. BTW i sent mine in and talked to a live person and paid extra because i did not know when i disputed the cost they cut the line…i agree with godofplage…CONSPIRACY!!!! at least my Dreamcast still works tony hawk 2 all day
That sucks ass man. Microsoft really needs to get their crap together and fix that. THat one reason I didn’t buy a 360. Wii baby!!!
Slumps man, my xbox was the same way. When they told me my warranty was up on the replacement they sent me I cracked it open and just kinda messed with it till it worked, and it’s been kicking since, strange I haven’t been able to do it again for any of my friends red rings of death. Hope your luck flips soon, man.
“Well if you’re willing to put the effort in you could always drag your PC downstairs, hook that into the the TV and watch Dune that way.”
I don’t think his 360 is his only means of watching DVDs. He does have Ps3 that I assume works. I think it just depressed him and now his night is ruined.
Anyway, sucks Spoony-man. Sorry to hear that.
Is this your roundabout way of begging for money from us in order to fix your XBox 360? Do you use pity as your weapon, Mr. Spoony?
…Well, it’s working. You’re pathetic enough to warrant some charity.
So maybe you can use the extra time to get your written movie reviews back up. I was halfway through Iron Eagle 2 when your site went down, and I need to know that snark will triumph over airplane porn!
Plus that’s pretty sad when I have a Super Nintendo and my friend has an NES that still work.
I’m doing well Spoony, thanks for asking! Sorry to hear about your 360. Yes, mine is still working, but I did have to send mine back less than three months from purchase the first time. I won’t make any recommendations about your 360, but I will suggest you consider purchasing an arcade cabinet, putting a computer inside, then wiring it for MAME play. For about the price of a new 360, you can enjoy some old school (and new school really) games in your own stand up cab.
Like That Dragon Guy, that’s why I chose the Wii over the Xbox 360 (PS3 never even entered into the equation for me, honestly). I’ve never heard of catastrophic equipment failure with the Wii, but that’s almost ALL I hear out of 360 owners. But it’s not just Microsoft – it took me SEVEN tries to get a PS2 that actually worked when I wanted it to (to this day it still won’t play DVDs or PS1 games). This is why Nintendo has been on top for so long.
Was yours simply fixed and not replaced? when mine RRoD’ed I got a new one sent back, when I checked the details on it, it also reset the 3 year warranty for me.
PUT TOWELS ON IT ! i havent had my xbox that long yet got it at christmas i just hope its still working when modern warfare 2 comes out XD and if its not ill cry and chop of my fingers
You have my condolences Spoony. I know you’ve been going through some rough times lately, but stick it out buddy… you’ve got more friends than you realize.
I know how to fix it. Add gamer tag “Monty the 3rd” to your friends list and voila…..instant good karma.
It’s like having a horse shoe up your bum.
man spoony, im sorry to hear that your 360 is broken, i must be lucky because i got my 360 in August 2007, and since then ive never had the RRoD, anyway man best of luck to you!
Ouch, always sucks when a console dies. Microsoft really should have held off a year to make their console die less often, unless it was all an EVIL plot to make money off of a product that dies often(DUN DUN DUN). I’m glad I stick to PC gaming. Long live PC(gaming)! Viva Unreal Tournament GOTY!!!
Sad thing That Dragon Guy is they’re tring. It’s not like the Wii and PS3 are immune to any of this, my little brother almost lost an eye because of a fling wii remote not too long ago.
I know what you mean man, exactly. My Dreamcast works, my Mega Drive works, but out of all the consoles I had, the 360 is the one that broke the most.
I mean jesus what’s with such a great console that it has such a fragility to it compared to the ones before?
Also, love the T-shirt and hair, don’t let things get you down, we all have days where suddenly everything breaks on us.
So Spoony can’t sleep and he’s trying to watch Dune?
“FATHER! THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKENED!!”
i bought my 360 late 2006 and it crashed 3 times since then – they replaced it, i think they also changed the motherboard to the later revision. interestingly i never saw a red ring, only once when i accidently pulled the ac adapter out, but only very short. the console worked after that again.
it sucks that its over the extended guarantee…
oh i love the simplicity of the old generation consoles, working in every amount of dust and dirt and under all circumstances – as it should be.
I have a SNES that is 17 years old, it’s three years younger then me and it still works.
Spoony, I know you never read these things, but if for SOME REASON you read this, try putting it in the freezer for 10 minutes. Ours used to red ring all of the time, and we did this about 2 or 3 times after it would red ring, and it stopped. It’s ghetto, but worth the effort.
Amazingly… I’ve had two 360′s and neither of them got the RRoD at all. Spoony, all I can tell you to make the process of getting it fixed faster, is to find your own bow and get them to send you the shipping label online. I got my own box and what not and shipped it myself and had it back in two weeks. I even packed it with adult diapers… don’t ask why I have them.
Spoony I feel your pain. I spent $450 for a 360 Elite a few years back. Sad part is that It doesn’t even give me the red ring which is still covered. It just decides that 2 minutes into any game that it will freeze up and have distorted vertical and horizontal lines. So add $99 for a repair, then add almost $8 for sales tax. I suppose its an even trade though because unlike the PS3, there are games for the 360.
@Tim Richie, this sounds like an advise you would give someone to make fun of him… wouldn’t surprise me if it worked however.
Geez, everyone I know has been getting red ringed within a couple of weeks, then I got red ringed, I’ve had the bastard for almost 3 years, so guess I’m lucky, but man, Spoony, that sucks, sorry to hear that.
I know where you’re coming from with the expired warranty thing. My situation was especially horrendous: I didn’t actually get the RRoD. It was some other obscure issue that took me several calls for the tech people to finally pin down, but it was bricked all the same. Problem was, since it wasn’t the RRoD, I wasn’t applicable for the free replacement Microsoft had been advertising. The situation got even more complicated because I thought I had purchased an extended warranty but Microsoft insisted I hadn’t. Even after I sent them proof of this, I ended up having to pay the $120.
God I hope it doesn’t happen again.
I fell you, man. My Xbox is broken right now too, but I only got one red segment. So now I got too find a way to get $100 to let them fix the friggin A/V port.
tbh, just use your PS3/PC for modern games and DVDs and let the next 360 you get sit there unless you need to play an exclusive
or just stop using the 360 altogether; unless you feel compelled to give microsoft even more money for their quality hardware or have an URGENT NEED to play gears of war 2 or halo 3 or….um….. gears of war 2……
Sound is messed up here, my speakers are dead.
But you are aware that Microsoft extended the warranty on Red Ring of Death-failures that is caused without actually throwing it in the wall?
Man, I’ve heard about the notorious RRoD. :( Sorry to hear about the warranty, too. I’ve always been a Nintendo fan, so I never really got into Microsoft’s or Sony’s crazy inventions. Unfortunately, it hasn’t let me escape from my Gamecube memory cards mysteriously corrupting themselves and destroying all their data. I got my GCN in 2005, it works totally fine after 4 years, but a little while after I started using its memory cards in my Wii, they both got corrupted, and I was forced to reformat them. :/ I don’t think they have warranties for that sort of thing.
Anyways, things always get better, so keep your chin up! ^_^ I found this vid to be particularly funny, if that helps.
I’ve gone through two too. Two totally different consoles that is, mine and my brother’s. Now I have zero.
Stupid hunks of garbage.
I mean, I’ve got no problems with the games themselves or Microsoft. No fanboy bullshit here.
But after that expense, other people’s luck be damned, the 360 is a heap of junk. I hate it (though I wouldn’t hate it if it worked…)
Using some guides we found, we got some supplies to do the repair ourselves. I just need the free time, which I may not have for months..
The reason it red rings is because the GPU(s?) unset in the heat and come away from the board. Cheap soddering I think, or maybe something to do with those silly x-clamps.
This is why the towel trick works sometimes, though I don’t recommend it. It gives the GPU a chance to settle back into place. However, you also risk burning out all the rest of the components inside the console.
Basically, this all comes down to the one consistent problem with this console the entire time: too much goddamn heat.
So yeah, just look up a guide on youtube I guess. From what I’ve seen, this stuff works. It’s not like the commenters who said “OMG it works after I fixed it thank you” ever come back to say “awfuck it red-ringed again”
I’ve had two red rings for general hardware failure and, most recently, an E-74 failure (I think that’s the error code, it’s something like that). The lukewarm-ish news is that when you pay the 100 bucks you get another year on the warranty.
Yeah My xbox 360 has been running great these past two years. Anybody play much L4D or TF2?
I had to get a second xbox, but for the wrong reason. It was stolen with all my games, my $100 wireless adapter, both controllers and all the cords. And may I add it was ONLY thing that was stolen from my house. Its also wierd because I rented fallout 3 and it was right next to my xbox and that wasn’t taken.
Well yeah, I’m doing fine Spoony. If you wanna come and crash at my place you’re more than welcome to. We have AC and a working 360. If you do though don’t be surprised if you’re asked to play some Marvel vs Capcom with me and my girlfriend though.
Probably happened during the move, Spoony. I’ve gone through 2 Wiis that way.
Where’s your Wii, by the way? I can see a Wiimote, but not the console.
i fixed the red ring once i unpluged every thing for a week pluged it back in have not had a problem since
Just fucking toss it, and spend that $120 bucks on PC upgrades.
listen man i have seen the same problem before i have in teh 2 years almost 3 of owning a 360 had about 7 different systems before they said my warranty was up. no clue why just said they wouldnt replace it anymore. If you really need a xbox fix just buy a arcade it may seem like crap that you have to buy 2 systems but trust me the big thing that causes the rrod is the power brick and the pro models are so over stocked they dont have any out built with the new parts but the arcades are all new. i got mine and my normal life expectancy for a xbox was about 4 months but this one has last almost a good 7 months with out any sign of dying ….. knock on wood.
Out of curiosity, why NOT put towels over it? My friend did that and while it IS a temporary solution, it at least works when done right, and gives you about a week to do stuff.
“next gen” consoles are as much of a headache as PCs. sometimes i don’t know why we bother… at least it doesn’t have vista, i guess.
Bitch, Bitch, Bitch….Jesus Christ man! Don’t be so negative.
Had my Xbox360 replaced for 3 times now. 360 is a nice console and all, but it really sucks that they didn’t take the time to make it actualy work properly.
Good thing I got my PS3 still, was more expensive but it doesn’t let me down.
I feel your pain, dude. Because of various faults and failures (only one of which was Red Ring related) I’m currently on my FIFTH Xbox 360.
1. New – Mystery game freezing/overheating issues about a month out of the box
2. New – Mystery game freezing/overheating issues about two years out of the box.
3. Used – Mystery game freezing/overheating issues about two weeks out of the box.
4. Used – Red Rings of Death 29 days out of the box (just inside the store warranty… YES!!!).
5. Used – Still alive a year later (knocking on wood).
I’ve had 4 360s in my life. Treating it well, first one died. Got given a replacement. That one died. Given a replacement. That one died, no longer in warrenty, splashed out for a new one. Which died.
So I sold the thing and got a PS3. Damn xbox, had some good memories with it, but the thing just never liked me back.
I always here how people have gotten the red ring. I guess mine is strangely resiliant, since I’ve actually took mine apart, put it back together again, and haven’t even come close to the red ring.
As anyone who owns an Xbox 360 knows, that red ring is caused by heat dissipation issues the console issues has. I’ve kept mine relatively safe by keeping it, and all my gaming stuff for that matter, in a room that’s easy to keep cool. Like the basement of my house.
So, when you get your 360 repaired or replaced, find a way to keep it cool. I would advise against fans, because they tend to either create magnetic fields, or have magnets in them, and that tends to screw up hard drives. A room with good air conditioning or a basement is your best bet. And, if you have a way to air condition your basement, then you’ve got it made!
I just got my fifth 360, which is over a year past its extended warranty. The RROD is a free repair, at least when I sent mine in less than a month ago.
And holy shit, you have a big TV.
Sucks Spoony, really does. I’m pretty sure there must be an electronics store that would do a fix up job cheeper than soul stealing Microsoft would? Can’t hurt to try. Either that take her apart and do some tinkering. The internet might have a solution. Thats a big might though…
A friend of mine’s been having similar trouble with his PS3, he recently got a replacement which died on him on a week ago. Thankfully since we live in the Uk, electronic goods like the PS3 automatically come with a standard 2 year warranty as part of EU regulations. You could try looking up something similar it might just help.
I suggest in the mean time you kick back and relax, aint no bother worrying about things that are out of your control. Although a box load of live spitting cobras in Bill Gate’s bed apparently helps when you 360 red rings.
“Before Bill Gates died. We saw…the ring.”
Gosh I know how you feel. I’ve gone through FOUR of them and I treat them about as well as you possibly can. I’m not even that big of a gamer either (at least current-gen gaming). I haven’t played XBox in over a month because I reeeeeally don’t want to send it in knowing in the back of my mind that I’m going to have to pay another hundred bucks to fix it anyway! Urgh… I really have no idea how my older systems work just fine but a 360 will break if you sneeze near it.
I got the RROD 4 times in 3 years …. After sending my initial 2006 Xbox for repairs twice, I decided to buy a brand new 2008 Model in April 2008. Now i was in charge of my company’s christmas party last year and I managed to convince the company President and VP’s to perform a session of Rockband in front of everyone. My freaking Xbox died on me the day before the party …. yeah, my newest Xbox lasted a hole Freaking 7 months …. Wooopie freaking doo …. I sent it for repairs and used the old refurbished 3X one for my party but still ….. Hey … maybe ill be lucky and pass the 1 year mark with this one ….
I love Xbox 360 (more than PS3) but i admit that their consoles are crap
I am stunned. No honestly stunned, I knew the X-box 360 had problems but I had no idea how prevalent it is. Forget towels (even though it is quite funny) you could cook bacon on one of those things!
I have to admit I’ve not gone for any next-gen consoles, not just because of the horror stories but I simply don’t have the time. When I do get a chance to jump on my PS2 (that I still have) I’ve forgotten all the controls and play like an absolute ar… urm I mean beginner.
Hope you find some way to sort it out or have better luck. Speaking of sorting it out how does a room get that hot? I mean do you live right next to a giant magnifying glass or is this new house of yours in one of the more pleasant layers of heck. Maybe I’m just naive, or it’s the English weather, but I just didn’t think it could get that hot outside of a desert
Is that Bruno Mattei’s “Terminator II” I see by your TV? Nice
Hey Spoony! I noticed in this vid that you have a PS3. I have one myself, and I would REALLY want to know what your Playstation Network username is. Please let us PS3 players know soon, please?
@ Mountain King
Spoony’s from Arizona. It’s hot like that just about everyday.
i wall nave bay a x box becose of the rid ring i have a ps3
spooooonay! Just play on your ps3 brossive, I’ve had two 360′s and sold them both before i got the ring of fire, but my ps3 has always been by my side, i’m sorry the heat’s got ya frazzled, you must have some bad karma ;) haha well anyways, have yourself a better day
Personally I think that the red ring of death is the only flaw in a otherwise perfect system, besides ps3
Hey genius, how about not using the 360 as a DVD player.
Fork out $20 and buy some cheapo piece that won’t drain the life outta a gaming system.
For real though, that sucks.
I agree with the guy who said it has cooling issues. One of the friends has basically put additional fans in the thing and keeps it in the coldest part of the house. It has yet to do it again. I wish I could head over and take care of it for you, but the commute would be a bit long… (in St. Louis..)
Don’t worry, there’s still books…right.? :D
I feel your pain, we just had our A/C drop on us Sunday and the wife is kinda touchy about how hot she gets =P. The red ring issue may be due to the additional heat in your apartment though. Try it again once the AC’s fixed if it’ll make enough change to the ambient temp. If nothing else, lemme know and I’ll bring a sledge hammer =P
My xbox (I mean the original) keeps loosing the optical drive. And I’ve got a fat PS/2 with the same issue. So it’s back to Doom, SWAT 4, and DOOM. Hey, does this mean you are playing through the expansion pack?
At least your PS3 works, right? So it is not a complete loss. Still suck though, that it is not covered under the warenty.
Ouch. I think we all feel your pain, Spoony. I, myself, have gone through six 360s, and luckily each one was replaced for free. You would think that it would be more cost-effective for Microsoft to produce consoles that don’t die from doing the thing they are designed to do. Oh well, that’s just one more nail in their coffin. And you make a very good point about the older systems. One would think that it would be the older generations that would fritz out after all these years, not the newer ones dying within months. Either way, try to cheer up! You’ll find a way to make everything work out. ^^
WHAT?! they have a warrenty time for the 360? I heard they removed it for so manny broke down, maybe its for they want everyone to get the elite model.
Thoe i can agre on what you mean how can it be so cutting edge when it has same build qualaty of a italian car from the 80s.
I feel for ya, but don’t despair, there is hope. When I got my 2nd RROD, I was also outside the warranty, and went to the net for help. Here’s a link to a fix that worked for me.
After doing this fix, my ‘box fired right back up and has been trouble free ever since. *knock wood*
Don’t know if this crap has already been said, I’m not reading 76 comments to find out, but it doesn’t look like you have the RROD issue. There’s 2 3 red light issues.
One of them is either power cable or the audio/video input being incorrect. It’s happened to me, I crapped a brick. Simply unplug everything from the 360 and every input, power, whatever, and replug it back in. That looks like the error you’re getting, unless you’re camera is flipped.
If it is the RROD issue, your warranty is restarted when you get the 360 fixed, so you’re fine.
I checked again, you’re definately not having the RROD issue, that’s the 4th quadrant that lights up.
You need to completely unplug everything, and plug it all back in. I assume one of the plugs got fubar’d because you just moved.
my gameboy is almost as old as i am and its still kicking, only 3 lcd lines died so far :D
That’s why I haven’t bothered to get either of this gen of consoles, and I’m still using XP thanks to Vista issues.
Why don’t you just plug in your PS2?
Dude, Sorry about your AC. That’s way worse than the xbox being fuckered.
Not sure if you’ll get this, but here’s a link on how to fix your three rings of death yourself.
It does require buying some parts, but the parts only cost about 30$ish i believe alot cheaper then Microsoft
my Xbox still thankfully work but I hope it won’t jinx it sending this comment ^_^ (well I recently got it this Xmas so there is still a chance for that to happen)
Spoony, I don’t like to be the one to say something, but isn’t any red ring of death issue automatic a three year warrinty extension. As I recall, one of the last acts of Peter Moore back when he still got tattooed was to announce the extension. I’ll just go check the warranty online. In fact, its in the preamble of the warrinty. And I quote, ” The term “Warranty Period” means: (i) as applied to the Console, a period of one year (three years for conditions that cause three lights on the ring of light on the front of the Console to flash red) starting as of the date of your sales receipt for the purchase of the Console, . . .,” (XBox 360 Warranty http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/Hardware/Warranty/Warranty/ProductWarrantyNew.aspx). You are covered man if I heard you right in the video that you bought the system in June 2008. That’s within three years of purchase date. Hopefully that helps.
dood u should google map a local store thaat might fix 360s. I would offer myself to fix urs but i live in the east coast. the repair price isnt much but u can also do it urself its really easy and u can get directions on youtube from xboxslave. HE IS THE MAN.Cause of him i know fix others xboxs and make me some sweet profit.
@ Mountain King post number 63
He lives in Arizona, which IS in a desert.
I’d give you my xbox, I swear. It works but I never use it. Really wish I could just hand it to you.
What a piece of shit that system is. Why did they have to make Forza 3 for it? Was so tempted to pick up a 360 just for that game, but I just can’t take the risk that it will all but certainly crap out. Who wants a console that just won’t work years down the road? Like Spoony, all of my old consoles work just as they did 10-20 years ago. Fuck the 360.
Eh you have a ps3 man… It’s way better then the 360, Why did you buy the ps3 if your ignoring it :S?
Instead of getting it fixed for 100 dollars, buy an Elite(the red one, if you can, that one has the Jasper, the black one has the Falcon)…
New chipset, a lot less likely to get RRoD, it’s Jasper.
I just got my 3rd Xbox because My first one warranted a fix so I sent it in and they lost it in the mail, Second one died outside of the warranty, and my 3rd one is has been working for the 3 days I’ve had it, though while I was waiting I got a free PS3.
Man, when it rains… IT POURS HARD!!!! Screw MS… they are nothing but headaches especially with their OS VISTA. Only X-Box item I have is the X-BOX 360 controller I use for PC gameplay but even that cuts off during gameplay. Move to Buffalo… 85 during the day and a nice 60 deg during the night… at least this year!!!! :)
What bruno said is right. BUT i’ve got 2 xbox’s currently. Both have had the RROD (One gotten from a friend who didnt want it anymore casue microsoft screw’d him and said it can’t be fixed) and my dad just searched youtube, got the Fix with the screws(I can ask him in the morning how) and my first xbox has been RROD free for about.. 3 year now, and my 2nd one for about 6 month. only cost him 10€ which is about.. 13 dollar. And since your warrenty has run out, you might aswell. Not like microsoft do anything to fix it anyway…
So yeh if you can be bother’d just Follow what some other people have said with the screw thing. works like a charm and shouldn’t go wrong again. Peace.
I must have the Highlander of Xboxs . I got mine the week they came out and its never ever given me problems. Its been through a fire, a ten foot drop, its been in the rain, and i don’t even treat it particularly well. Same thing with my computer, went through the same fire and has been dropped many times, it looks like a deskinned terminator, but it keeps on ticking. I must be the messiah of electronics of something.
Hey, I had to replace my 360 about 6 times now. In the beginning I was against getting it because I’m a Sony girl and never had a problem with the PS3. I got the 360 and I have to say I love it’s online play more than the PS. Anyway, I got all four of the rings on mine each time. I’ve been calling and they want my card info… To tell me whats going on? I don’t think so! I emailed them and they kept running me in circles. All the Xboxs I had were used but I just bought a new one and it seems ok at the moment. ^^; Only had it for a few months now.
Just like what Noah said I have everything from the NES and the SEGA Genesis to the systems now and the on;y one giving me problems is the 360. I have to agree that the next gen is kind of a let down.
It sucks, but maybe it’ll be a better idea to just buy a new 360. The arcade units are like 200 dollars, and these types of issues are a lot less common in newer models. Plus, you’d get an extra controller, some XBLA games, a fresh warranty, and they have come with 256MB of flash memory and an HDMI port.
That’s only part of the ring. Try unplugging the cords in the back and plugging them back in. Or turn off the 360 and wrap it in a towel for a few hours. If that doesn’t work then you can send your 360 to the manufacturer or whatever and they’ll have it back to you in a few weeks.
also you might as well try the fix guides like what you got to lose?
Pinworm August 5, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Don’t know if this crap has already been said, I’m not reading 76 comments to find out, but it doesn’t look like you have the RROD issue. There’s 2 3 red light issues.

I checked again, you’re definately not having the RROD issue, that’s the 4th quadrant that lights up.
Copy and pasted so this information is not lost..
you need to screw in the x-clips..cheapsoft doesn’t use good solder so when the thing heats up you loose the contacts. Since your warranty is up you might as well try to fix it on your own.
Oh and to those who complain about vista or pc problems, you obviously don’t have vista because 90% of all the typical errors were fixed with the last service pack. If you still having problems with the Os its most likely your computer not the os it’s self.
Hello Spoony !
We are all sorry for you
But don’t worry !
You are so happy and smiley since the first video
(I dont know if you’re smiling in FF8 or SWAT 4 but anyway)
So, don’t be so sad, we’re all with you !
Bad things only happens when you don’t need them .
Remember that !
a teenager tell you !
Camille . ( I’m sure you don’t know how to say my name,I dare you to!)
I recently had to get my Out-of-Warranty Xbox 360 replaced, I just bought an Arcade unit off Ebay for 120 bucks, then my Halo 3 copy broke then I had to replace that as well so that was an additional 50 bucks.
I’ve had this problem so many times, this is my 4th 360, what does that tell you when the fucking Sega CD lasts longer than the 360. Sorry for the loss.
I’ve had mine 3-4 years works great. Towel? Wtf?!
What about if we all donate 1 dollar to the spoony? That way if 200 of us donate 1 dollar he can get a new xbox.
This is why I own a PS3. The worse that will happen is my house’ll burn down.
Awwww dude! I remember the “funeral” for the last one. This sucks, the A/C REALLY sucks. Well, go on line and blow things up. It helps me.
oh no Spoony not again man.
that really sucks.
I feel for spoony, Same thing happened to me, once with the original, twice with the elite. I say twice because it was working for a while the it just died.
So you play DVDs on your 360? You could get a dvd player at Walmart for maybe 20 bucks now. Those things are cheap as hell.
And yeah, I had this second generation PS2 for almost 7 years now and it has yet to break down and I had played it constantly when I was in high school. Had the 360 for over a year and it got me the red ring when I played Fallout 3 too much apparently.
I gotta say man.. personally I’ve gone through 2 Xbox-360′s myself before calling it quits. I have an Atari from the 80′s that still works to this day! I purchased a Ps3 about 6 months a go and the thing still runs great. If you want reliability I would totally save up for a Playstation 3. I noticed most of the games you play are cross platform anyway so I don’t see it making much of a difference. Good luck with it all!
before you die you see the ring… I wonder if anyone else got that reference.
Haha, right before you said you looked like shit I thought ‘Grr someone’s sexy-fied in the heat’.
You should play more ripper(Christopher Walken come on!) or some fmv games.
just use your ps3 to play dvds
I have a xbox 360 elite and it runs well and its not as loud as the white 360
I’ve fixed this problem so many times it’s not funny. the key seems to be coming up with a more permanent way to keep it working.
I hear the Towel thing works by overheating the console giving it another issue and once it cools down you can play it for the better half of the week before the Ring of Death appears again. There’s two reason’s why I’ll never try this. 1st being that if it does overheat it then they may not send another back when I finally decide to send it in and 2nd Excuse me if i take in the idea with a couple grams of salt if the way I resolve a RRoD is by throwing a fucking towel over it. On the better hand though nice TV Spoony! In times like these you need to here compliments I guess?
Hey, is that a copy of Bruno Mattei’s Shocking Dark (aka Terminator II)? Where did you get it?
Thank you, Spoony. Your trials and tribulations have saved me from buying (or, more accurately, long term renting until it dies) a 360 myself.
Don’t feel too bad. I know a guy who’s gone through EIGHT Xbox360s.
I own pretty much every major console since the Atari 2600. As of today, the only one I’ve ever had problems with is my Dreamcast, and that problem I fixed myself. However, I do not own a 360. I’ve played my friends’ but was unimpressed and am not willing to take the risk.
When my Sega 32X outlasts all my friends’ 360s, what does that say about Microsoft?
Stop whining. You have PS3. Put it where the 360 was and the feng shui of the room will improve tremendously. I’ve had 4 360s break down on me and the best advice to give you is just to stop giving them your money. Why the fuck should you spend money on fixing an inferior product that keeps breaking?
Hey I’m sorry for the red ring of death and hope you can work it out. Hope things get better.
Nice set-up, Spoony. Anyway, this is why I never bought an X-Box, because they’re a waste of money and way too frustrating. Instead, I bought a PS3 and saved! Good luck getting it fixed. Hopefully this one doesn’t die.
Anyway, glad to see the Spoony One going at it full-force again.
Wow, I swear of all the reviews associated with TGWTG, I think you’re the one that needs a hug more than anybody.
You put yourself through hell with E.T. for the Atari (playing that abomination after having your wisdom teeth taken out), the microphone issue, the server issue, moving from one place to another, and now the Red Ring of Death (TWICE, apparently).
Spoony, you deserve a hug.
“Wow, I swear of all the reviews* associated with TGWTG, I think you’re the one that needs a hug more than anybody.”
Oh, dear. I am sorry. I meant reviewers. “Reviews” made no sense. My bad.
I’m lucky to have only gone through one so far. Well, I got my first one in early 2007. It didn’t red ring, but it did start FREEZING with this godawful static noise, and since I only had a few months of warranty left you better believe I sent that sumbitch in.
Well they sent me a brand new one, in the plastic and everything, so that was cool. So far so good. Here’s hoping, cause I’m fairly certain it’s not a Jasper unit.
I think I heard once that 3 lights means it’s overheating. I had the problem and moved it to an open area and it ran perfect for about 2 months before the motherboard shorted out and I decided to NOT pay the 150 they wanted to fix it.
damn man that sucks ass well your not alone mine red ring of deathed on me too just two days before yours so i know how you feel :( microsoft sucks
ouch dude that really sucks spoony… thankfully i have yet to have a RROD on my 360. Everyday when i get rdy to start up my 360 i do a little ritual. i start off by petting it and telling it that he is a good boy. next i set up a pillow on the floor, so that if i get a RROD i can drop to my knees and scream “WHY!!!!!”. After that i close my eyes and proceed to push the button. so far so good on this ritual…
oh yea i forgot to put in the happy dance i do after it starts up fine… my friends get a kick out of it. nothing funnier then a big guy dancing like an idiot.
I have had to replace my Xbox 360 6 times the most recent case being only a week ago and it’s really starting to tick me off. i don’t know why this top-of-the-line technology is so unreliable. I am keeping it in a ventilated area and i have mine on it’s side but they just keep on getting the RROD.anyone have any suggestions?
Dude. You have a gaming PC, a PS3 and a Wii – you can play the overwhelmingly vast majority of games coming out with or without the 360. Are Live, Halo 3, Fable 2 and a handful of depressingly average JRPGs worth not only the fuckin’ headache/expense of getting it repaired but also the constant fucking fear of the thing breaking?
I still have mine from launch, it still seems to be working fine, but I’ve been told that’s pretty rare.
Six times? Really? SIX?!
BEND OVER FOR UNCLE BILL!
This is why I quit working for Xbox 360′s tech support. I got tired of saying no to out of warranty people after a while when there was clearly a systemic issue.
Incidentally… an inside look into MS’s RROD issues:
lol im sorry to say, its your own damn fault for getting a sh**box, viva la ps3!!!
btw im not really a fanboy, i just owned a 360 first and got the rrod 4 times then i couldnt be arsed and got a ps3 instead, best choice i ever made
I feel your pain. I’ve actually never had the red ring of death, but I’ve had an equally system destroying, but less common problem with my 360. I pretended it got the RROD and got free repairs on my Xbox, which is still working fine for now. But I know of the pain it is to have an expensive as fuck system crap out on you after only a year of owning it. Fucking Microsoft. :(
By the way, love the T–shirt.
Why would you watch DVD’s on your 360? I wouldn’t trust the 360 with my life. XD
Hey, I’ve talked with a friend who’s repaired/modded 360s, and he said 9 times out of 10 it’s just the cheap solder they use coming undone. I’m not entirely sure what needs to be done, but apparently it involves opening it up. So if you have a friend who’s good with tech, I suggest mentioning it. It voids the warranty, but if you’re already out, you should be fine.
Also – My warranty ran out and they repaired mine more than once for free. Just set up the shipment thing online and they’ll send you a box. Haven’t charged me before. They’ve just sent me a new system with a free month of Live.
I know the feeling, my Xbox got the dread “E87″ screen. Amazing how low Microsoft’s standards are. Bunch of bastages, I tell ya.
i thought you had a PS3 too. it’s how you played MGS4. dosn;t that play DVDs too? it does blue ray so there’s no reason it shouldn;t…
and i don’t have an Xbox. it’s Sony and PC all the way for me.
my cousin did what post 103 did. He just bought an arcade Xbox and changed out the hard drives
That’s the one reason I haven’t went out and bought a 360. I own a Wii, and I figured that until the PS3 price drops to the same level as a 360, or until the 360 RRoD problem gets solved, I’m not buying either, since apparently neither company wants my money right now. I feel your pain though, Spoony, as I’ve been through 3 cell phones in the last six months… all have died… which sucks because I text a lot, and decent cell phones are so expensive it’s like just flushing my money down the toilet.
See, now I’m afraid because it seems everyone I know, and everyone I don’t know but see online in videos, has had the RROD. I’ve been lucky thus far, had my 360 for 2 years and it hasn’t red ringed yet… but I do know its coming. I’m seriously fearing the day I turn on my 360 and I see that dreaded red ring. Pray for me ;_;
PS: When and if it does happen, I still have plenty of retro systems and my Wii to keep me occupied. Gonna miss Xbox Live while its getting repaired though.
is the origninal XBox death here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UCfBDesTfs&feature=channel_page
thats why i got a ps3 lol
I got the red ring of death back in october and I left my Xbox alone for a few days. I turned it on and its been working perfectly ever since. If anyone knows specific details of the rrod and would like to inform me how this is possibly id love to know.
I feel your pain Spoony. I am on my 4th Xbox 360. The firt one had freezing errors, the second one could not read or recognize any of the games I put in the tray, and the third got the red ring of death. I play my PC loads more than my Xbox 360 so it isn’t much of a loss for me.
3 light error? General hardware failure, that sucks. I recommend trying to remove the hard drive and booting with it out and seeing if it goes away.
Google ‘Xbox 360 error codes’ if you want to try repairing it yourself.
Ah man, my condolences. It’s happened to me once before already. I can’t imagine it happening twice. Best of luck with it. I sent it in and payed the $100 to get it fixed, and it was fairly painless.
And once again just google for error codes. It might just be a bad power supply.
Feh, I’ve been waiting and watching both the 360 and PS3 grow over the years, trying to decide which to buy. This is one main reason why I decided that as soon as the PS3 slim comes out, I’m getting that. The PS3 gets almost all the same games the 360 does, even most of the worthwhile “exclusives” end up being ported to the PS3 eventually, and with added content too. Plus I like the idea of having reliable equipment and free online.
So yeah, I’d recommend you just give up on the 360 and just get a PS3 Spoony, but that’s just my two cents.
See, now, that’s why I’m always so hesitant to get these new consoles. My Super NES has been going good for almost 20 years now, I think… Damn, I’m still coming to terms with being able to say things like that…
But really, I know how it goes with things breaking all over hell. My car’s getting like that.
Gotta say, though, I’d think Scarlett would be going nuts over you right now, my man. Getting this place where it’s just you and your brother has made you look a little more mature. I’m no expert or anything, but I hear women like that sort of thing.
I understand the crumbling dwelling bit, though most of my bad thoughts are generated by my room of storage… meh, it’s a little nicer now at least.
Air conditioning? Whats that? In the last two houses I have lived in, I have never been connected too it, well granted this house doesn’t have it at all, we do have heaters though. :D
On another note, it seems that even if I am in New Mexico, a actual deserty place, every where else is hotter.
Aw, poor Spoony, thats terrible luck. My old Elite was close to doing something similar, freezing after like 2 minutes of gameplay on every game. The nice people at my Gamestop just took a new one out of the box and swapped it to me. I doubt you have such options, Im just lucky that they are nice people and I happen to have befriended most of them.
And yeah, state of the art technology my ass, the damn thing was released in a faulty state and they still havent fully fixed it.
The US must suck. My brother’s Xbox broke about a month ago now and they fixed it and reset the warranty so he now has another three years from getting this new one for it to break again.
Either that or Spoony isn’t aware of that part.
I got the three red lights a month ago and after unplugging it and letting it sit for a while it has worked fine since then. Leave it on for a minute and then unplug it and let it set for another minute then plug it back in and turn it back on. Unless you have an error code that should work.
They make them so crapy so you have to call in a either a pay for the repair or b go buy another one either way they are makeing more money from this. Your right heck I could start up my freaking dreamcast or my original Xbox and the thing would work no problem. Spoony you could look youtube for the red ring fix and fixing the nuts and bolts and recompunding the heat sinks actually works and it only will cost about 20 compared to 100. You said the thing is out of waranty so if you god forbide get the e84 message the cant not tell you no because like I said it is alraady out of warranty. I actually got a small bussines going now where I fix the heat sinks here in NC and all I charge is 20 for the fixs. But go online I garuentee you the heat sinks fixs works and not waiting or paying required.
Best wishes to you, Spoony. Hope you get your Xbox and your AC fixed soon.
I like 360, and this is its one major flaw, mine’s working fine, and i must say, this can be said about a lot of technology nowadays, for example, you cant download certain apps for the ipod touch or else it will freeze, its disappointing, but its got to be fixed sooner or later whether its from a new model of 360, or the next system and you know there has to be one eventually, there always has been
btw i think you people can stop telling him to buy a ps3, i think he already has one, in the deadspace review he used a ps3 copy, so im pretty sure he does already
Dude, I’ve never had any problems with my Box. You should try to keep it upwards, not sideways.
Seriously, it makes a huge difference.
Get the newer “Jasper” model. Read the label on your power wattage on the back of a XBOX console. If it reads “12.1A” then you have the Jasper model. Which is the mroe refined model than the Zepher model (Which is the 14A) and it runs A LOT cooler.
Correct me if I am wrong on this, but I think the RROD is not covered by warranty and should be replaceable even after the warranty is done, Microsoft replaced mine after the warranty ran out for free.
I’ve had that happen before, I had purchased one of the earliest xbox’s and had it die only a few months ago. It was definitely beyond the initial warranty offered for it, but considering it was a RROD they took it in and replaced it. Honestly, give it a try, it can’t waste anything but some of your time, and since you’re evidently already in hell, you may as well ask the devil to stick a fork in you.
same thing happened to me. i’m on my second now, and it better not let me down.
Dude this shit has happened three times to me !!!! fuck microsoft
At least I don’t have to pay when my PC breaks every year
What a coincidence! I was about to watch Dune!
Sorry about that, man. :( Mine has yet to go Red Ring on me. It’s a 360 Elite if that makes a difference.
…Yet my PS3 has crapped out on me about 3 times over the last 2 years…hmm…
Jeez, tons of comments. I can’t be arsed to read through them all, but here’s what you oughtta do, Spoony, since the same thing recently happened to me.
Looks like you’re running a Pro model of 360, judging from the chrome faceplate on the disc tray. So you’ve got (at least) a 20 or 60GB harddrive.
Carefully remove your harddrive and set it aside, and then throw the stupid console away. If you send it in for repairs, they’ll just send you an older, previously-broken but-refurbished console. Which is just going to break again *anyway*. It’s a neverending cycle, because hardware that is prone to RRoD (primarily from heat issues) is going to /continue/ to RRoD because those heat issues cannot be resolved without a complete unit replacement, and whenever you send in a unit for repairs, they actually tend to send you back one that’s been /previously/ repaired. So, even under warranty, if you send in an RRoD’d console, you’re likely to get someone /else’s/ broken and cobbled-together console in return, simply because it’s a faster turnaround.
So – Go to a Best Buy or something, and snag a brand-new 360 Arcade; the kind without any harddrives. In other words, the cheapest 360 you can find. Take it home, slap your old harddrive onto the side, and behold – you should have the /latest/ revision of the hardware, as opposed to years-old hardware that has been repaired over and over and over again. And it costs only slightly more than an out-of-warranty repair anyway. And before you ask – all of your DLC should work, even though your disk is on a brand new console.
Hint on identifying the latest (and quietest, and coolest, temperature-wise) hardware – the Arcade should have an HDMI port, and 256MB of onboard flashram storage. If it doesn’t, then it’s an ancient, high-temperature motherboard design.
I can feel your pain about the air conditioning, my room has not had a functioning AC vent for the past 3 years and it definitely gets up into the 90′s at night in August. Hope you get that part soon.
Frankly I am disgusted that Microsoft still has this issue over 3 years after its release. It makes it quite clear that they are more interested in making money than making a reliable product. I was planning on getting a 360 originally, but after seeing how lax they are in their products I decided to get an upgraded PC instead since nearly all the “Xbox Exclusives” are released on that as well with free internet and updates.
Wait a minute… The Xbox came out the same time my AC stopped working…. Microsoft must have stolen my AC in order to try and counteract their rampant overheating problems! Those bastards! :p
@ 172 Shodan,
I did exactly what this guy said, mine has RRoD’d twice, once on the brand new console back in ’07 and then once last year in ’08 on the “repaired” console they sent back to me. He’s totally correct, Microsoft will just send you back a cobbled together unit some other poor soul experienced the Red Ring with.
I simply set aside my HDD and went and bought the Arcade model, chrome faceplates mean nothing to me if the console isn’t going to f*cking work anyway! I then re-inserted the HDD and it was as if the beloved 360 had never had a fault, I was back up and playing again in a few days.
Granted it’s an expensive way of getting back on track, but it’s way easier than sending the console away, waiting 3 to 6 weeks for a replacement that is just going to be a re-hashed 360 someone else previously owned and will break within a year. That’s what you get when you release a console with hardware that isn’t fully tested – yet another reason why retro games/consoles are closer to our hearts than the new stuff ;)
Bad luck Spoony, hope you get it resolved.
You make a really good point saying that other older consoles like the Sega CD never give you shit but that maybe is the new plan to make more money by making a crappy built console and charging people into buying a new one or keeping on life support the old one. I’m happy that I’m a PC gamer and usually my system problems are virus related or dust related.
Get a PS3.
Wow, I really feel bad for you. I have yet to go through a RROD, so I don’t have much advice. I do agree with what Esc0bar0ni said: keep the Box upwards instead of sideways. My friend discovered this when his second one went RROD (Luckily they replaced it for free because they reset his warranty), and both times he had been storing them on their sides. I would guess that it has something to do with the airflow; keeping it upright seems to allow air to move through the Box more effectively and avoid overheating.
Speaking of overheating, I can only imagine what it must be like to live in Arizona and lose your AC. I lost mine a few times over the past few years, but seeing as I live in Minnesota, we at least have nights that drop down to 60-70 degrees in the summer. Hope that part arrives soon so you can get that AC back up and running!
(Also, sleek new technology, my ass. I don’t have any of the consoles you have anymore, but my Nintendo Entertainment System still starts up every time I turn it on)
I hate to seem like a conspiracy theorist but Microsoft breaks the Xbox’s that get sent to them. Not in a major way but just enough. When they started offering the warranty the major problem was not enough goop (sorry for no technical terms, its 1 am and im tired) between the heat sync and processor but when it overheats it shuts down the system (the towel method helps a bit by forcing a reboot and after being soo hot the heat sync goop is somewhat redistributed, or so I’m told, so otherwise a quick trip to frys electronics for a quick fix). I send it and get it back just fine and after about a 2 months, 2 week after my warranty was up, the internal DVD drive assembly broke in the middle of COD 4, told me $99 but I said fuck warranty and ordered the 29 dollar drive offline. While I had it open putting the drive in I cleaned the old heat sync crap off and put a bottle of new stuff on so my processor will be good too.
Hope you get it all worked out Spoonyman
aww that sucks that same thing happen to my brother not to long ago its the 2nd time he quits hes going to THE motherlode PS3 baby sorry that your 360 broke
Yeah trust me I know how you feel I’m currently on my SIXTH XBOX and this one is getting ready to die too :( but man that sucks
I notice a lot of people telling him to buy a PS3, but I just wanted to settle that. Just watch the video again and look to the left of his XBOX. ^_^
Er, to the RIGHT of his XBOX. No sleep >_<
I thought they fixed them for free now whether in or out of warranty
It’s purely a heat sink-related issue.
The cheapest and simplest way to avoid over-heating is to put it ontop of the box it came in, rather than let heat buildup on a more solid surface underneath. It sounds odd, I know, but it works.
Actually, that’s a good point. Even if a 360 is out of its /standard/ warranty, an RRoD specifically should be a special case, guaranteed for three years. (I never took advantage of that, because my 360 RRoD’d at three years /and one month/.)
Still, though, sending it in for repairs is essentially a neverending cycle of frustration. The /primary/ cause of RRoD issues is heat – the older systems simply ran too hot. And let’s not forget the broken-as-designed CD tray – I’ve got a large number of mangled discs. That’s largely the reason the “install to harddrive” option even /exists/. :)
That is the thing with Microsoft, they do EVERYTHING half assed, (and yes this means Windows too), so it errors alot. I use XP Pro, and my C&C First Decade wouldnt work on my old copy of pro, but does work with my new copy of XP pro. You just never know with them. I would rather wait 10 years for a good stable copy of windows then wait 5 and get one that gives the blue screen of death ever 20 minutes. I get enough crap from my OS, might be why I never bought an Xbox or an Xbox 360.
Yeah I have another problem. My Xbox just out of no where started getting strange screen display changes like colors turning greenish the later the visual just completely craps out and there nothing i can do to fix it. Im now on my second and this has just happened to my newist one. Un-Fucking Believable
Wow, sorry about your 360 and AC. My cousin just recently got RRoD. Maybe I’ll stick to PS3 :x
well I had problems with my PC which I used to take care of it too much. After it broke down, and after fixing it, I decided to disrespect it and treat it carelessly…
And after that it worked really fine..
Sometimes if you care too much about things they broke… but hey that only happens with me, don’t know about you dude.
Sorry about your XBOX.
Get a damn PS3, it’s future proof.
man i knew 5 other people besides spoony that have the rrod including me lol i think they planned this or sumthin cuz every1 in my area has it if it isnt new
YOÚ ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE!
- I have the ‘half-ring of death’, which means my cooler doesnt work properly.
- Me too do not have any warranty
- Two weeks ago I bought a Samsung Jet. I love it, but is is already making errors, especially the pc program which accompany the purchase.
- I had to by a new provider for mij television
- I have a bug in Metroid Zero Mission: I can’t complete the game at 100%
- Lost a lot of money in Normandy where I went to for vacation.
- And the most depressing: I was on a bike and just 5 meters in front of me, to the left, a cat got killed by a car which drove over him. I haven’t seen anything that shocking in my life so far (tv aside). (ps: this was lat saturday in amsterdam)
Little Bro had his Xbox sent for fixing, too, though I’m not sure if it had the rings of death or not. The good bonus we got was 1 month free of Xbox Live (Silver), so I managed to get MvC2 and Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, both fun games, even if one’s not into the minor changes and updates.
And by mentioning all this, you’re no doubt gonna have people donate to you for all the expenses.
… Unless that’s your actual plan!!!
Yes you have been mistreating it!
First off it’s in a horizontal position, with no airflow sandwiched in between the other consoles. The Xbox 360 is like a laptop, it overheats very very easily, it should always be in a vertical position with enough open space for airflow, it shouldn’t work when it dosent have to work. So the most probable thing that happened is it overheated.
Secondly it’s an old version with outdated 90nm dies for the GPU CPU etc… they tend to overheat easily and RROD.
It’s an old version so it has a crappy chip set and crappy welded CPU, what happened is the plastic holding your CPU to the main board melted, shifted or moved it in some sort of way. And thats why you got the RROD aka “general hardware” failure or “core digital” failure, This error code is usually caused by failure of one or more hardware components, although it can indicate that the console is not receiving enough power from the power supply, which can either be due to a faulty power supply or if the power supply cable is not fully inserted into the console.
So yeah the main cluprit would be the position of the console.
Mark Reddman knows the down-and-dirty way to open an Xbox 360 and prevent the damn thing from overheating. It’s the best way I know of to prevent future RRoDs without having to pay Microsoft $100 every time it breaks down.
Check out his 4-part video here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=A50754C2155623BD
I went through this recently with my PS3, and it’s a sucks. It’s such a horrible though that you’ve a) had your console die and will probably have to get it repaired, and b) you’ve lost a slash of save files. Hope you get it fixed soon.
Off topic slightly, it’s bad enough you teased us yesterday with your PC set up, today you’re teasing us with your totally awesome gaming set up. Is it wrong that I drool over peoples game console set ups?
The Red Ring of Death isn’t good (why do they call it a ring It only 3/4tth of a ring ah well).
I think the warrenty starts over after you send in your 360. So it is three years starting from when you got your 360 back. But I am not sure about that.
Anyone have a complaint address for Xbox ?
My Xbox has failed in the same way even though it was manufactured this year.
I have arranged a repair but this took three weeks and several emails.
I was told by a senior customer representative that Xbox does not have any to allow customers to make a formal complaint, I called him a liar.
John Green the senior customer services representative also told me that he is the only person employed to deal all complaints from any of the 30 million plus Xbox owners. At this point in the conversation I could not help myself from laughing.
I will send it to Microsoft to get fixed but I’m not fussed at the moment because it was a competition prize therefore I did not pay for it but I expect I will be buying Xbox games and services in the future and I would like to make sure my complaint is registered as well as having a means of redress if I encounter any big problems with Xbox services in the future.
That’s why people use PC.
I got the RRoD too, just last month they sent me 2 robot e-mails and when I called them I was on hold for 2 hours.
It has been 4 years since the 360 came out in November and the first recorded complaint about the Red Ring of Death was July of the same year (2005). that is 4 years to find the problem (which they already knew about) and fix it (which obviously has not happened). Did no one in the Design, QA, or Marketing teams see this and think that they should fix it to prevent any financial losses? I would think that since businesses care so much about money; that the thought of losing money make them grind their teeth and pull their hair. UUUUUGggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!
Poor Spoony. That just sucks.
What the fuck is wrong with consoles or technology these days? I mean, back in the day you could have pissed on your TV/ radio/ NES/ mobilephone etc. and it would still work! Now you can’t even put a glass (stupid thing to do btw) on your xbox360 or it fucking explodes!
Spoony, I feel for you man.
I’ve had my 360′s on its own little table out of the way of everything so its ventilated, even had a fan pointed at it in case I was on it longer than a few hours to keep it cooler. Nothing worked! I went through 7 Xbox360′s before I decided to fuck it off.
It’s a great console, but the build of it is so shitty! I’ve abandoned the 360 until they sort this out. My friend bought one, the new ones with the small power supply, their new attempt to make them last longer, he got it home, plugged it in, turned it on and he got the dreaded 3 red lights, out of the fucking box!
Keep the videos comming, great stuff :)
You shouldnt need special treatment for a console M$ fucked up big time on the first 360′s, and apparently later ones too. I guess i’ve been lucky i got my Xbox 360 just after it came out in 2005, i have a old 20gb premium they don’t make anymore, and i’ve used it a lot, but it still works perfectly, but then again i have it atleast 30 cm from the other consoles and the power cord goes directly into the wall socket, since i heard going through surge protectors might contribute to overheating, though that’s only a claim, however i’d suggest a Elite 360 since they use a better cooling system and another chip, think i might upgrade to elite soon, not having HDMI sucks :P
oh. i was going to buy an Xbox 360 but after this and 2 of my friends ones breaking just out of warrenty i think i’ll just save the xtra 100/150 pounds and get a PS3 thanks Spoony!
My xbox has been working fine since release :s
But i did get the red ring of death once. However it was just that the video cable wasn’t completely in.
Check if it is completely plugged it.
never heard of a ps3 that broke.
There are alternatives to sending back to Microsoft. There are people who can fix almost any xbox 360 issue except maybe a drive error and can do it for far far less than M$
Yo Spoony buy an Xbox and what ever you can at Sam’s Club our return policy is, Yes. Thell take anything back as long as you have the reciept and even if you dont have the paper reciept they have it in the computer.
I bought a pack for 300 bucks and when it went red ring of death i took it back got a new one and got like $130 bucks back because the price of the pack went down
You see people this is why you need a PS3.
yeah, this is why the PS3 is a better system…. Fucking RRoD.
I’m sorry about your Xbox360 man. I guess we don’t realize how great our games are until we cant play them anymore the same goes for movies. Good luck with things I hope they get better for you soon.
Man, that sucks! I really hope you’re able to get it fixed/replaced pronto. Feeling your pain.
Do you know what Spoony? You just made me cry. I am serious. You are too honest man, you just made me cry. My 360 died like 3 days ago, and I was just like you, reading myself to watch something on DVD. You are so honest, your honesty has demolished all my barriers and defenses. I am very sorry man, and I totally feel for you.
I will chime in with the same BS that other people are saying; my xobox 360 doesn’t get used hardly at all because I don’t want it to brick so great I have a damn machine Im afraid to use. As for my ps3 well guess what it still works and it plays all my movies and frankly I love it (hell my ps2 still works so does my ps 1 the original one not the slim, heck my colecovision works and its damn near as old as I am). Frankly I don’t know what possessed me to believe that Microsoft could actually build a console that would work for long periods of time they can’t write me an OS that won’t crash with just it and Microsoft approved crap on it. Anyways sorry about the xbox and rant (buy a ps2 they can play dvds and are cheap =) or http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/05/12/red-ring-of-death-fix-it-yourself-void-your-warranty/ and try to fix it yourself)
That really sucks, dude. The more complicated technology gets, the bigger is the chance that it fucks up… well at least that’s what I say to myself.
Btw, if you’re going to play SWAT 4 today, the first thing to do should be to choose the shotgun and blow the shit out of Reynolds skull… bet that will make ya feel better… well, A LITTLE :p
Good luck with your Xbox, though!
Now I am a PS3 owner and in all honesty the 360 and PS3 ar both tied with the same processor speed etc etc. To date my PS3 hasn’t even paused let alone crashed once since I got it on the first day of its release here in the UK. (Thats about 2 years and a month or two.) You have no idea how many part time jobs I had to tie down to get the £400. Anyway, to date XBOX360 seems to be the only console that tells you when its going to die, if it has four different ways of dieing indicated by the rings then there must be a dormant technical issue hidden in every single one. My friends which add up to about 14+ 360′s have all had to send theirs off to be fixed. Why haven’t they tried fixing the issue with new ones or to a greater extent actually call them back to fix them then ship them out again WITH NO CHARGE (But we all know they would charge us anyway) All I’m saying is, couldn’t they have made sure the damn things worked after a certain period of time before shipping it out. Slow and steady wins the race perhaps in this case??
I’ve got even better than a working Xbox right now. I have no Xbox at all!
I had the same ring of death and i disconnected the power supply from the xbox and the other side now its working again.
I bought a PS2 a few years ago and it died about a week after the warranty expired. I didn’t mistreat it AT ALL. Yet, I abused the crap out of my Sega MegaDrive when I was a kid – like, threw the damn thing against the wall several times when I lost at Sonic, and the thing works perfectly TO THIS DAY. Old consoles rule.
is that spot where you showed the red ring the spot where you keep it? I’m not an expert but that doesn’t really look well ventilated to me, what with it being surrounded by other heatproducing appliances with minimal clearance in between…
Anyways, you sure the warranty doesn’t renew itself when you get a new xbox? I don’t know how they handle it over there but here when you get something through a warranty the warranty renews itself with the new item.
Jesus CHRIST the stories in these comments are horrifying. I was planning to finally decide which console I was gonna get, and was considering the Xbox, but the idea of the thing DYING on me has really put me off. But the PS3 is so expensive. GODDAMMIT.
hey, don’t destroy 3 red ring xboxes… i can fix these things in under an hour… send one to me :D this is an EASY project to fix ussually!
Cheer up man, I don’t know what to do with my life right now
Thats too bad Spoony, i got red ring of death once so i got it fxed and it has work perfectly after that :P
STAY STRONG BUDDA!
this is why i’m a ps3 fan
Funny story ’bout older consoles lasting forever, friend of mines N64 used to live in a plastic box under the fish tank and one day the fish tank sprung a leak filling the box about 3/4 of the way up. The N64 was submerged in the water for 2 or so hours before they noticed. After they dried all of the games, controllers and the console itself they all continued to work perfectly fine.
I think alot of the time xbox 360s get the red rings is when they are placed on its side (not standing up). I have had mine for about 2 years and its not an elite and its never broke, but one time i did get the red rings but thats only cuz when i moved it i placed it on its side so i unpluged everything and stood it up now it works, i keep my xbox standing on two cabinets next to my tv with a gap in between them i also make sure the room isnt to hot.
good luck trying to get it fixed spoony
I have a PS2 that’s been through hell and back and still works perfectly, yet this is my 3rd 360
Xbox 360 is okay, but the hardware sucks.
PS3 is okay, but the software (Not the games, the interface and such) sucks.
Wii is okay, but it overall sucks.
So just use your PC and you can’t go wrong. :D
If I where you I would sell the games and beat the thing with a hammer.
Ye can’t really beat on your videogame systems anymore. My NES & SNES ended up sneaking out to a women’s shelter in the middle of the night to get away from “Daddy”. Those were some hearty sows.
Hitting a new system is like pinching a guy with cancer who has a real bad sunburn.
PS3 for the win! the good XBox games end up ported to the PC anyway.
In after “PS3 is better than Xbox360″.
Personally, I don’t own either, but I’d probably prefer PS3 over 360, since they seem to be well made, and one doesn’t have to shell out more money to get features the console should already come with. I’ve actually always been a Nintendo fanboy, but since their new “direction”, I find myself leaning towards Sony. I could go on for hours about how much I hate Nintendo right now, but seeing as how this is a video about the Xbox360, that would be pointless. :P
But you have a PS3, right?
Play that then!!!!!!!!!!
I just got a red light of death yesterday. I have had 2 Xbox’s now but in MS defence the first one got peed on by my dog so… Mine was working fine then I went into the kitchen to get a drink and came back and the screen was all scrambled but the music was still on. I turned it off then back on and got 1 single red light (botton right I belive) so it may be a diffrent problem then everyone else I don’t know. What sucks is mony is tight in my house so buying a PS3 is not a option as I own tons of 360 games and just can’t afford a new system so I guess I will have to just wait it out till I can afford to get my 360 fixed. Oh well such is life.
All my friends that have an xbox has on some point broke, I only know one person who PS3 has broken down on… xD
Is that the KDL-40W4000 or the KDL-46W4000? Either way awesome choice of TV Sony Bravia’s rule! I have the 40 :) Speaking of Sony, you have a PS3 man! Play that or watch a Blu-Ray.
You do realize you have to show the Red Ring of Death to someone else or you’ll die in 48 hours right?
Wow you got some stupid warranty laws overseas. I might be living in a country that has been in the eastern bloc for 45 years, but if your shit brakes within the warranty time and you get a new one, the warranty time restarts. Even Mr. Gates cant do squat about that.
i think the 360 took one look at the Dune dvd and thought “fuck you!!” and just like crapped out mate lolz. Just goes to show you how cheap and shitty Microsoft is to its customers. Every friend/relation/customer/sex partner of my mind has had their X box ring out on them and i guess thats why i went for a Ps3 instead (Great blue ray player shame bout the games).
Xbox smells!! burn in hell Bill Gates you donkey licking bastard!
Check your local craigslist. My friend bought a red ringed 360 for 30 bucks(he knew it was broken) and had a guy on craigslist repair it for another 30 bucks. Not only did he fix it but he upped the power on the fans so it wouldn’t red ring again. It’s loud as fuck now but it works great.
That’s the great thing about 360s. They all come with a pre-packaged game called “Borrowed Time”. PS3 is the overall better system. Time was it was the cheapest bluray player on the market. Not anymore of course. Saw a basic bluray player at Walmart for $98. Anyway, 360 does have a FAR better online community. I’m talking marketplace and such which is why I went with it. I know I’m going to be kicking myself incredibly hard when God of War 3 comes out. Frakin’ PS3 exclusive! :(
You, sir Spoony, are not alone, I am here to say:
My 360 redringed a year and two weeks ago. It too is out of warranty, and so must fork over the c-note for the fix-up. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the spare scratch to get the thing fixed, so here I sit, with naught but my oldschool consoles raring to go. That bottom shelf of yours? All I got left. I’m so close to the level of desperation required for the Towel Trick…
My A/C’s fucked too! In a futile effort to keep it from peeing all over my carpet, I gotta keep the thing turned off during the day, only running it as I sleep as that’s the longest I can keep it on without walking into a swimming pool in my living room. So my apartment gets about 90 degrees too. Granted, it’s Texas and not Arizona, so I have better odds at a sudden cloudburst cooling things off nicely, but it’s only slightly better odds. I’m melting, I’m melting, oh what a world, what a world…
Check your local craigslist for xbox repair, i found a guy in my town that fixes the RROD for 30 bucks, and sells refurbished 360′s for around 80 bucks, plus he bought my old one for parts.
I’ve had luck when it comes to my xbox. It has got the red ring of death about 3 times, and we’ve fixed it ourselves every time we got it, buuut now when I fixed the xbox, the storage device is now BROKEN. So I can’t save and them profiles are gone now (I’m sucky at fixing gameconsoles, so my dad’s gonna fix it.).
I can still play, but not save, which sucks very bad. >:(
Maaan, the ROD just sucks. This also happened to me 4 times in 3 years and everyone I know hast sent at least 1 Xbox to Microsoft…it’s just ridiculous…
WOW you kknow every time about to go buy a 360 someone always tells that there brand new 360 just got that red ring BS I MEAN GOD DAMN IT!!!! it makes me not want to buy one anymore because knowing my luck it would happen to me
I know how depressing that is. I mean, I don’t own a 360, but yesterday my computer broke down and it won’t function without crashing. And it has to do with it’s memory, so It’s nothing I had control over. And I treated it as best as I could. Don’t force yourself to suffer through SWAT 4 if you don’t have to. I think reviewing a game you enjoy would wake you feel better.
Yeah, that’s where we’re at. Mine started breaking down a month before MVC2 came out, and now, it seems it won’t move again. But it broke timely, just 1 week after I got a 1 year Live Gold account, so getting a new one is a waste of that. Grrr!
Still, at least…at least we got out healths~!
Sorry to hear about your X-Box. But on an entirely different note…
I don’t mean to be an asshole (with you being so busy, the moving and all), but are you still reviewing Ripper? I love that game and I’d love to see you play through it. Swat 4 may be fun to watch, but Ripper’s way more awesome (imo) and FUNNY.
Hope everything works out for you and have a good day/night.
I think Microsoft rushed out with the Xbox-360 and that means more faulty hardware in the console.
But look at all the old consoles, they still work.
I still have a SNES, N64, an old Xbox, a PS1, a slime line PS2, an Atari ST and a Gameboy Advance to name a few and they still work!
It is indeed all a conspiracy.
I only had my 360 for a year and it had the red ring of death over 5 times. The first time only happened within a month of owning the stupid thing.
And like you, Spoony, I take uber care of my consoles. My NES, SNES, N64… all the old consoles I still have continues to work unlike the 360 that keeps crapping out on me.
I don’t remember exactly, but I think that if you find a “guy” he can fix your x-box so that it will be like 200% less likely to RRoD. It has something to do with Microsoft using cheap parts and if you replace a few key components with quality ones, you’ll no longer see red.
I don’t know if this was mentioned (I am not reading 243 comments), but mine recently got the red ring of death (after a weird delay, too) and was recently out of warranty. So I call up MS to see if they have something about this and if there’s a work around, otherwise I would use it as trade in for a store (I didn’t make it sound threatening, just said matter of factly and calmly). The guy who I was talking with apparently was allowed to give me a complentary repair, basically giving me a free repair and a brand new warranty period (one year), so yay!
If anything, try for that. If you sound calm and maybe mention the possible trade in, they’ll likely give you a free repair. It worked for me.
Sorry to hear about your system. I’m just curious but have you tried looking for any independent video game stores in your area? I know that some do system repairs, so it can’t hurt checking them out. It’s not like you’re risking that much on a repair if your system is already a $300 paperweight already and it’s cheaper than buying a new system.
BTW, if you want to watch DVDs, it’s cheaper to get a used PS2 if you don’t have one lying around.
Yeah, I am on my sixth Xbox 360 right now. It sucks, but at least Microsoft is replacing them without any problems. I have always been up an running again within a week. I guess they decided to say “screw the warranty period, we screwed up so we’ll fix them all.”
It is funny how all our 15 and 20 year old Nintendo consoles are still working. I can’t get enough Super Mario RPG on my SNES.
I have an NES thats probably as old as me (nearly 19 years old) and it still works, it just needs some rubbing alcohol on the games. These new, advanced, high-price super graphic capable systems apparently don’t last as long, perhaps less can be more but then again less is whats hurting the Wii in its game line-up. Shoot, I have an Atari 2600 that still works! I just can’t find the plugs that I need.
yah my xbox broke about 4 weeks ago and this keeps happening to me. Its not the red ring of death its the stupid disk drive that keeps breaking. I went through 2 of them like this. I don;t get it my ps1, ps2, gamecube, and ps3 all are fine but my xbox keeps breaking and now it is in Texas getting fixed.
HEy the wii might be shayt but i have dropped mine 13 times already (small children in the house) from a 6 ft tall stand and it it still works like a charm.
Mother: Microsoft what are we gonna do with you *Laught Track plays*
Microsoft:Aww I love you too mom!
Has anybody offered to fix it for you? I’m sure me and my brother would work on your system if you shipped it to us. No charge. Drop me an email if you’re interested.
Am I the only one who HASNT had any problems with my xbox at all?!
My controllers right analog stick broke and the crap headset wich comes packed with the system broke… but the system it shelf, works perfect, but sure ive only had mine since december
I’m on my fourth 360. One of the replacements Microsoft sent me red ringed right out of the box. The one I have now is on it’s last legs too. Piece of crap console. I also have a PS3 but I keep buying games for the 360. Must be mind control.
I hate to say it but the Xbox 360, by itself, is a piece of junk so get used to the fact that the console will always burn itself out. Personally I went through five 360′s in less than a year. Ridiculous. And not to create a fanboy flame war here but ever since I purchased a Playstation 3 I haven’t been on the 360 all that much. Anyways, my condolences on your suicidal console.
Time to invest in Sony and bluRay.
My Xbox360 got Rrod in november but i could fix it. No it’s not the towel trick that worked the miracle.
I hade to pick it apart and reconect the processors which will come lose after a while of regular use.
It’s a good idea to add new coolant paste to the processors for the old one is just a cheap pice of shit mix.
With new paste it will disperse heat more effectivly and the exesive amount of heat the console produces is the nr 1 cause of these problems with the Xbox360. Heat+cheap parts= Rrod
Reconecting the processors have like 80% chance of solving a Rrod problem.
Now there are tons of videos on Youtube that describes how to it.
Now for you suckers out there let me just tell you that the infamus towel trick will actualy damage you Xbox more then it was before. The heat from that causes the internal connectors to soften up which will in some cases make the 360 work but it will take punishment it’s not designed to take.
As for the hairdryer trick it will work in a simmular fashion like the towels but will cause less damage to the console but it rarely produces satisfatory results.
There are a few other methods but most of em just ruin it for you. Be careful of these 100% solutions that get posted everywere.
And before you ask…yeah i have tried these methods which makes me quite a sucker as well so welcome to the club :-)
If you are looking for somethinf that works try anything that has anything to do with the processors.
I think it sucks to be a xbox360 owner.
You may have 15-25 games and with 100% chance that sucker is going to breakdown in next 4 years and in maybe 4-6 years they will make new Xbox, lets say “Xbox 3D” and they stop making 360 and when you lovely 360 will finally don´t work anymore, your left with 15-25 games (all good games) and broken machine that microsoft build.
I actually got a system error for the first time ever yesterday, and have one red light, not 3 (code E 76). Contacting tech support resulted in them saying “we don’t actually know what the issue is, but send it in and we’ll fix it for $99 + shipping to and fro because your warranty expired a little while ago!”. All the info I’ve read says that this error is related to the ethernet port/chip, but they use the same code for “unknown”, so…who knows?
Well, Spoony, wait untill Hospital level in SWAT4. This really can break any man’s spirit.
The doors have little windows in them and so the tangos will usually shoot trough the closed door. :<
It’s too bad Sony lost the “console war” for this generetion because they really had the best product.
I’m already on my second 360, the fun part is that my Xbox (the first one) still works and hasn’t gave me any trouble in like, 6 years. In fact, the fact that my Xbox worked so well pushed me to buy a 360.
Sorry to hear that yours is RROD’d
you know how to fix the RRoD? … be like me .. I don’t have an X-Box … neither do I have a PS3 … XD … PC ftw … but seriously …. only reason i don’t have them is cos i don’t have the money for them … i bought a PS2 just 3 days before the ps3 wuz announced …. so … my life sux more than yours i guess (from a game addict’s perspective)
Or you could send it to me and I could fix it for free and even mod it if you want me to for free
I wonder which person at microsoft keeps getting reports on errors that make the console about as usefull as a fucking shoebox and keeps saying “Fuck it, just shove it into a truck and sell the god damned thing!”
I bought an Elite because I heard it had a better processor and cooling so I wouldn’t get that red fucker and guess what happens. E74, which, in case you don’t know is basically just the same fucking thing but with another name.
So yeah…I feel your pain, and if you’re ever down for taking some hostages over at Microsoft, let me know.
Microsoft seems to make a lot of products with “death” related issues, between BSOD and RROD…
Anyway, I’m gonna go play some Battlefield 1943 on PSN for free, then maybe watch The Dark Knight or Watchmen on Blu-Ray, then maybe play some InFamous later on before going to bed. Good luck with your barely next-gen game system though.
Iv’e had my 360 since the release, and I’ve never had any problems with it, guess I’m just lucky :)
And that’s the reason why i still don’t own a 360: I wanted to buy one as soon as they have sorted out their hardware issues. It may be a prejudice but I still see too many RRODs happening all around me. Sure, other consoles fail too, but they usually evolve into something more reliable over it’s lifespan.
That really blows man. I don’t understand consoles, back in the day weren’t cutting edge but they were built to last. At least in my case my 360 lasted 3 years before it bit the dust, so might as well buy the basic model and put all the peripherals that came with your older one on the new one. That’s how these console makers get your money anyway they build it so it busts up past the warranty. Then sap your cash. :/
Companies don’t build things for quality anymore, they build them for profit.
Dont be so sad spoony, its only ur second time
my old game boy ( the grey one ) still works, but your brand new xbox broke again, and the replaced one did too.
if it is, as mentioned, a hardware problem, they should just bring out an xbox, that has those faulty parts replaced.
they could sell it as “Xbox 360 – This one doesn’t get a RROD” and just replace the old ones.
i mean what the crap, they sell consoles that are bound to break sooner or later because of their mistakes, and yet they only decide to replace the broken ones with ones that have the same problems.
that’s just stupid, this can’t be cheaper than fix the problem and not having to give their users a new xbox every year or so.
I heave heard that Microsoft is still fixing their consoles for free even though the warranty is out on it. I read an article saying that they had to set aside millions of dollars for this. I’d call and raise hell. If they don’t do anything, just buy a ps3, and stick with that.
I’ve on my fifth one, and I’ve always treated them well. The graphic card broke in my first, 2 red-ringed (one was used, maybe it shouldn’t count) and another I broke the disc-drive by accidentally having it tilt like five degrees to the left while a disc was spinning inside of it (basically a cord wrapped around my leg and that was the end of it.)
Unless you never use it, the replacement will die too. The 360 has the worst design possible: the cpu and gpu both have relatively high TDP, have tiny passive heatsinks and are very close to each other.
Using a better thermal paste will help, but unless the stock paste was applied by Apple, the temperatures will go down by 5 degrees celsius max. The only way to prevent overheating is with a legitimate aftermarket heatsink.
And anyone thinking any “tricks” work should try building a computer. Processors die from overheating because at high temperatures, electrons will leak and will alter the crystal structure of the silicon.
go to youtube and look for the fix, you have to open up the xbox and replace the fan. That fixed the red ring when this particular person and since warranty is gone, you really have nothing to lose. Good luck Spoony!
The RROD is the only reason I refuse to get a 360, it makes the dreamcast look like a god in comparison to how long it lives (DCs break down in a couple years usually) Microsoft doesn’t seem to care though, if they had, they would still be making original xbox games and would have fixed the RROD.
Hey Spoony. Been following you for a while, and I think you’re really funny. What’s not funny is “that little sumbitch” the Red Ring. I’ve gotten it before, and it just seems to happen at random. My newer early 08 model didn’t last as long as my friends launch 360. His RRoD’d in the middle of Dead Space so I finished it first, haha! Anyway, look for a local PC repair shop that can do the “x-clamp mod.” Basically, the x shaped brackets that hold the heatsinks in place are too tight, and cause the mainboard to bend to the point where the solder that connects the chips to the board cracks. Oh, and get some nice thermal paste too. The MS shit sucks.
I not a fan of the Xbox 360; loved the Xbox. I would be interested in getting one, but I just don’t want to deal with these faulty build issues. I never understood why people live with what I think is an unacceptable amount of defect, but f it were any other product, they’d demand a recall or just not buy the thing in the first place. Microsoft should just stick to software which you can patch unlike the 360. Don’t fret Spoony, your PS3 won’t fail…. knock on wood.
What I do, and what hasn’t proven me wrong yet, is to get an external attachable cooling unit for your 360. I did that after the first time mine overheated and it has lasted about two years without any issues. I’d suggest getting the Intercooler that I use.
It’s funny, I NEVER would have bought an Xbox360, but I actually lucked out to the max and WON one! :D
And just about everything you guys complain about is the truth. Here’s a tip “Don’t buy a 360!” Your just letting them keep releasing a piece of garbage. I never really even play games on the darn thing, because the games are so expensive for one (60 dollars…seriously?!), and the internet multi-player isn’t free (Am I the only one who finds that strange O.o), and even I have seen the ring of death!!!! What the heck, people must be really stupid to keep buying this thing… It’s great for playing movies I download though!! (even though I had to do an ‘update’ to play anything off a thumbdrive).
291, say that to the 360 fanboys… You’ll get a hilarious reaction.
Don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but according to Gameinformer, they’ve sold 28 million 360′s as of a few months ago, and 8 million have failed so far. Almost a third of their products are defective, yet they’re still in business. Only Microsoft could pull this off.
I’m on xbox 360 number four. The last two lasted less than a month each. Once I quit FFXI, I’m trading this load and it’s games in for a PS3.
Sorry to hear that Spoony,
Course the PS3′s internal power supply, built-in wi-fi, blu-ray player, and USB/wireless controller support is a piece of shit because you can’t play HALO on it. Right? At least that’s what all the fanboys say.
XBOX is a piece of shit. End of discussion
i dont know if anyone else mentioned this but heat is the biggest factor for a red ring.
i recomend you get your 360 out of that little cubby its in. a 360 is like a claustraphobic (correct?) child. it needs plenty of room to breath and cool down so i suggest if you dont have a carpet floor, put it down there away from all the other wires, or get it its own little stand.
other then that its too bad that your 360 is dead. hope it gets fixed soon. i’ve only had one for about 3 months now.
My 360 resides in the basement right next to a rotary fan.
shit that sucks, well if you get it fixed again hopefully it’s true what’s being said about the current 360s that they found the fix to the problem… *shrugs* could also just be corporate america lying to us. Best of luck to you, Noah.
I feel your pain Spoony, I bought the 360 almost as soon as it came out and it lasted until a few months ago, naturally it’s out of warranty.
You know what I hate about this? If this would’ve happened to the original X-Box, Microsoft would have been drove out of the console business with torches and pitchforks. However, with their new roots and status as a juggernaut company, they can fuck their customers in the ass all they want.
I’ve bought rip-off horseshit made in India that is more reliable than the 360. In fact, this comparison is an insult to Indian industries, so you have my apologies.
Buy A Fan, Its Easier
Maybe you should try the X-Clamp on that X-Box. Or, hell, try the towel thing. Not like you can fuck it up more, right?
Don’t let it get you down Spoony. You can always watch Dune and Time Chasers on your PS3 there (Think I saw a PS3 anyway, I’m too lazy to check). And I know how you feel about having broken air conditioning, but unlike my couch, yours at least looks comfortable. Hope things get better for ya man.
That’s a serious bummer! I don’t know why some people have gone through 2-3 360′s while others still have their original and it works perfectly. Either way, DVD players are so freakin cheap these days it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a $30 player on hand for such emergencies.
Do PS3′s not play DVDs anymore? Unless maybe in the last 3 hours Sony and Dr. Insano joined forces and decided to force people into adopting Blu-Ray movies by disabling the DVD capabilities in the last Firmware update. That would be too evil for Dr. Insano, but Sony on the otherhand…
Anyways, that’s why I haven’t bought an Xbox 360 yet: Everyone I know has returned theirs at least once, and one friend had to return his 3 times. COMPLETE BULLSHIT! What other fucking product has such a high failure rate? You’re totally right: People’s 360′s are dying, but my grandma’s goddamn NES still works (after a few blows and restarts…but still, IT WORKS!). Shit, you would think the damn things were running ‘Windows ME’ the way they’re fucking up.
The day Microsoft makes a product that DOESN’T SUCK, it will be a VACUUM CLEANER.
My Playstation 3 and my Wii have been pretty solid systems so far, and I’m 2 years into each. It bites that your warranty expired right before this shit happened to ya. Would it be better to get another refurbished console for $100, or spring for the fresh, new, ‘more reliable’ hardware?
You just moved, right? The three rings sometimes pop up when you change power sources for the 360. You might just need to monky around with a couple of cables if that is the issue. Check the power supply button on the back. If its green all you can do is send it in, but it it’s orange or red or off then read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906102.
And by the way, I am fine thank you for asking- my 360 recently went through a problem where the sodder holding the GPU to the motherboard clonked out. I could’ve fixed it myself with a roll of pennies and a screwdriver, but extended warranty and free Microsoft Points for MVC2 (suck it Playstation3) was too good to pass up considering the repair center is in Texas and I live in Louisiana.
@ Everyone pointing out the thing to the “left” of his X-Box: Could be anything, it could be a PS3 or it could be a crazy device of doom used by Doctor Insano to kill his 360!
I haven’t had a single problem with my 360 and I am not one who has been all that nice to it. I got really pissed off and threw the damn thing down the stairs like some crazy console throwing ninja and it is perfectly functional if a little cracked and falling to pieces…
Maybe it is like some sacred ritual of fate? Throw your 360 down the stairs as a test of your faith in Microsoft and if you stay true to your belief in them your 360 shall be granted with immortality and shall never brick for the rest of eternity! Oruntilwereleaseanewconsole.
I don’t know if someone has already pointed this out, but those Xboxes’ problems are that their amperage is way too high. The new (arcade) model runs @ about 12amps. The older ones run about 15-16 and the 1st gen consoles run @ 19. Microsoft’s R&D department sucks and I wonder how this ever got past the drawing board. My advice is to get a new arcade (just keep ur HDD) and not shell out to repair that one.
If you sent the Xbox off to get repaired once, the warranty should renew for another 3 years when you get it back from Microsoft.
Every cartage top loader anyone has ever owned still works. You could throw a N64 down the stairs an it would still work.
Shit, dude. If you want I’ll mail you my Arcade.
If it was me Spoony, I would just go online and find an new Arcade console, and just use that. It would probably cost about the same, and it would probably be faster.
That sucks the big one, Spoony! My first 360 red ringed it about a year after I got it. Sent that cocksucker off for repairs. About 3 months later the repaired/replacement one crapped out on me too. I said fuck it and bought a brand new one. That one is still going strong thankfully. Currently rocking some Too Human. Not nearly as bad as all the reviews had led me to believe by the way!
Keep on plugging, Spoon! You look like shit!
Hey Spoony, just take out the hardrive and buy an Xbox Arcade. When you’ve got the Arcade, just put the hardrive in and everything should work out.
They make it break on purpose….
I swear – those Microsoft assholes makes everything especially so it’ll break early
Meaning you’ll have to buy more and more.
Bwahahaha…I can’t do evil laughs, sorry
If I remember right, Microsoft just replaces 360s that die by the RRoD no questions asked for free now.
Just call up xbox and navigate through the stupid voice thing, and they’ll send you a box to send it back in.
I know this because my friend got RRoD’d recently and they replaced it for free.
Normally what you said would be true, but apparently there was some major lawsuit action and now they replace them for free. =P
This is why I don’t understand why people put so much stock in the 360.
I was a huge Xbox fan and after I heard about all the issues the 360 was having, I decided to pass on getting it until they did something about it After they ‘helped fix the issues’, I decided to purchase one. I bought it used, but it was only a few months old and was a ’08 model, so that shouldn’t have any issues right?
Boy was I wrong.
The system was no more than a year and a half old when it RRoD’ed. Heck, I probably play my PS3 more than my 360 and I still have yet to have any issues with my PS3. Truth be told, it’s a much better DVD player anyways, or at least I prefer the functions they have for DVD playing. What’s worse is the idiot that had his system for only a few months got the warranty on his system and after talking to Microsoft for roughly 20 minutes, I would of ended up having to pay 120 dollars. Thankfully, I was able to get a good deal through a local video game store and I have another system without a warranty. Keep in mind that I’m anal about my systems and I’ve been gaming since the NES days.
P.S. You look sexy!
Dude, I’m so with you right now… My box broke just a few days ago, and of course…. no warranty here either.
Mine got 1 light though… but no error messege or anything, just died on me with a black screen of death.
Hi, I’m a long time fan of the site, and all of our employees visit the site while on break, so much so that we put you up on the big screen whenever something new comes up. I run a computer repair service in Albany, GA and we do the bulk of red ring fixes around the area. I’m not sure if anyone else has already mentioned this, but the only way to guarantee that this doesn’t happen is to slap your 360 components into a better case. You can prevent just about all of the issues you’ll have with your 360 by ripping that bad boy apart right of of the box and slapping it into a PC case with better ventilation. They even make special cases just for 360′s that are pretty quiet and sexy.
When you get your next one, or get that one fixed, I suggest you do that right away and save yourself a lot of trouble.
Here’s some advice to avoid this in the future. Take a box (like from a VHS tape) and put that under your 360 so that all of the vents are exposed. My brother has had 4 red rings but he did this and it hasn’t screwed up in about 8 months.
Forgive my candor, but get over it! You’re a 28 year old man– with no job — crying over a god-damned X-Box!? C’mon, you’re better than that–at least I hope and pray that you are! Jesus H, man. How can you live with yourself!? This is ridiculous! I used to be like this too, but the really sad thing is that you had the nerve to broadcast your sobbing on the web! I can’t believe you were actually crying on screen–OVER AN XBOX!? My god! Until you have a job and a respectable income, You have not earned the right to cry! And I will say again…MY FUCKING GOD!!! I never want to see a video like this on the web–let alone your site again!!!
This is just tough love though. I hope you are okay.
If I may, I might suggest getting an 360 Elite, if you can afford it. I have one and its been working great. Hasnt crashed at all, and neverr once got the red ring. I know this probably wont help, but hey, thought I might offer something.
Or, try standing it up straight, that might let the fans cool it.
Lol, it could be worse. Two months ago my 360, which I’ve had for three-four years without any unexplained RRoDs (someone kicked it once, and I had to get it repaired, but that doesn’t count) was stolen, along with all my games.
Don’t feel bad man, it’s happened to a LOT of people. I would suggest not wasting any more money on it. I’d recomend going PS3 and getting an XB1 if you have last generation games that you still wont to play.
Hang on, it looks like you do have a PS3 there, You can watch your DVDs on that can’t you. I can on mine.
That sucks donkeyballs. Seems like all boxes rrod sooner or later, im just glad mine is still running.
If you’re feeling like tinkering a bit you can probably get it up and running by doing the xclamp fix if not youre probably better off just getting a new box.
What i find funny is how microsoft only gives a 3 year warranty for these in the US
In my country there is a mandatory (by law) 5 year warranty for products like these
Someone said something about faith in Microsoft? eh? I have surely been caught in one of Doctor Insano’s alternative dimensions ~_~.
I found a solution for my elite when it broke down, I decided not to throw money at microsoft like my friends have and instead, either to live without one, buy a ps3, or stick with a PC.
You’re right at least you have SWAT 4 :D
This is the most complex tear down of the xbox360. If you’re somewhat handy you can do this yourself. The xbox is basically build to get a RRoD.
This is not supposed to be a Fanboyflame; i myself am a PC Fanboy and therefore, build my Stuff myself.
However, i would never place a heatsink as tiny as the xbox360 one onto the GPU, only to place the Drive right on top of it to completely block the Airflow.
Nothing against the Xbox360; great Games there. But i have to wonder what the Microsoft Engineers where thinking.
Not all that much apparently…
lol Time Chasers.
you’ve got thousands of fans, and yet your xbox is overheating…
That bites… I hate weeks where everything goes wrong… and that’s pretty much every other week for me. So, hang in their, Spoony, you aren’t alone!
That’s terrible. My 360 (which up until a few days ago worked perfectly) decided to stop working with an E-74 error. (one red quarter lit up, apparently has to do with the video chip fucking up) GG, Microsoft.
Stupid Place to set a Xbox360
Ah, I feel for you man, I’ve had the ring and now that the extended warrenty that they gave me expired, the driver had died..(Another common upon the literal LIST of xbox 360 problems that can occur) 100 Bucks for that too…I feel your pain man. On a lighter note, screw microsoft I want to buy a spoonyone shirt instead.
Not too suprising . I know tons of people whos Xbox 360 has failed. Personally, I got a PS3. I figured I outta just pay the little bit extra for something that wont break down on me
Holy Shit! My 360 red-ringed on the exact same day as yours! What are the odds? I’ll tell you! Microsoft gave us models that would last only a few months after the waranty expired, so they can cheap us out of cash! Damn You Microsoft!
my ps3 plays regular dvds(its a 40 gig) but the only thing that sucks about no backwards compatibility in any of the ps3s unless you have the 60 gig version which they don’t sell anymore.
If your ps3 does play old ps2 and ps1 games were do you fit memory card and controllers?
haha! thats what happens when you release your system before its completely ready to beat the sales of sony! you dont see the ps3 or the wii haveing those problems now do you? proving that microsoft cant even make a game system right!
Havard, and everyone else. The PS3 may be more reliable than the 360, but you’re still not safe.
Both my 360 and PS3 had hardware failures. What sucked was only the 360 was under the extended warranty. The PS3 wasn’t. I had to pay 120 bucks to send it back to Sony… basically I paid $120 for a new PS3. That’s what they gave me, so my PS3 must have been beyond repair. Oddly enough when I sent in my 360 (entirely for free, no shipping fee requirement either) I got the same one back, running just fine (I know because of how discolored the original white faceplate is on it).
Thankfully the PS3 I was sent back was also the 60GB model that played PS2 games (a rarity), so I’m guessing Sony has some on reserve in case someone’s current 60GB PS3 bricks. I would have been pissed if they sent me one of their newer ones.
Poor Spoony, damn red rings I agree this is cutting edge and it fails, we have these 20 year old consoles that work fine
I never had anything close to this, and it’s been about a year since I got it. I’ve heard that the 360 gets the red ring if you play it too much, but this is just pure speculation.
behold the absolute power of nex gen consoles
Poor Spoony. Don’t feel too bad, the $150 Logitech THX speakers I ordered arrived fucking dead! Plugged the sumbitches in and no power, no nothing. So I say both of us are depressed. lol
I had my first 360 die on me one month shy of my Best Buy 2 year warranty running out. Thankfully they replaced it with an HDMI model and gave me a new 2 year warranty and I had like $50 in store credit left over. But still I shouldn’t have to worry about my system dying on me all of a sudden. But you said you were going to watch DVDs and I noticed you have a PS3 there. You should have just watched them on the PS3. I do wish you luck and hope you can get your system up and running soon.
Dam……….. I always get the 1 ring of death, but i can usually fix that myself, Somthing happened to my mates ps3 resently that not only broke it, but wiped out the memory, and this happened literally the day after his warrenty expired. How fucked up can your luck be?
My playstation 3 (the superior system, just lacking as many games, but let’s face it, most of em suck anyways, the good ones are on the PS3 as well) is working JUST fantastically :) never had any problems ONCE. That’s what you get for getting something from Microsoft. They are NEVER good. All of their products are complete ass until they’re ready to bring out their next product which acts like ass too.
Seriously, people need to boycott Microsoft until they start PROPERLY TESTING their shitty products and bringing quality out. Morons of the world I swear lol.
Consoles have been an ‘awsome’ experience for too long, check out “Onlive”, defined as exclusive gaming service.
I believe there was this guy that was working with Microsoft had been actually testing it for problems when they first developed it. He gave it the ok, after confirming “There was no problems.” After all this happened, they immediately fired the guy for costing them millions of dollars. That guys going to have a rough time finding a job.
I sense a tremor in the almighty Spoony’s voice. Whether anger or sadness, I utterly sympathise. I remember how I felt when my PS3 decided to stop reading discs.
And that comment about the old-school consoles is awfully true, my Sega Mega Drive still works and I must’ve dropped it, poured juice over it, and left it to get several layers of dust in it.
I hate Microsoft…. I had the same thing happen though my problem was that it just couldn’t read the disc, no red light, so I was able to just take it to EB games and have them switch out the memory system and that was that.
Seriously, M$ will replace your console if you haven’t opened it or anything like that. They know all about the RROD, and they WILL fix it for you for free b/c it’s THEIR fault and not yours. Call them. If the guy tells you otherwise, talk to his supervisor. Keep talking to people until someone tells you what you want to hear. It’s the same thing with the PS2 when it kept getting disc read error messages. Yeah, you had to call and harass people about it, but they’d fix it regardless. There’s this little thing called the internet where people get together and bitch about stuff like this. They can’t act like this has never happened to anyone in the history of anything.
I feel for ya Spoony. My first 360 lasted a good couple of years before it RRoD’d on me, and it conveniently happened only a month or so after my warranty expired. Talk about planned obsolescence.
An evening with Dune is an evening I support.
LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS!
just do the x-clamp fix, buy it from ebay for 10$ with the screwdrivers and nylon washers and some heatsink paste and thats it, you get a pdf where everythis is explained, worked for me, fixed my RROD
I have been living in that ninety degree room with a box fan that is 12 inches, down in DE. With around 100% humidity. We have 2 air conditioners in the house, in the downstairs, and none of them make my room upstairs right next to the stairs where I sleep any more bearable. I know what your feeling. This night is the first time I actually slept comfortable with it being around 70 degrees. I do not own an X box 360, but I’m looking to get one soon but with all the red rings I may reconsider again.
dont bother comin to Aus then its ’90′ degrees even in winter
Spoony, not sure if this, um, fix, has been mentioned yet, but buy a new Xbox from Wal-Mart, put your old one in the box then turn around and return it for a refund. It works, Wal-Mart has an excellent return policy. A friend that worked there once told me about someone getting a refund on a box full of dishes that turned out to be full of rocks.
mobiusclimber : No, they won’t.
My system was unopened and it still was going to cost me 120 bucks to get mine repaired. Their RROD policy isn’t as open as you may think it is. I spent close to half an hour talking with this guy and the best I could work it up to was 120, which is still absurd cause it’s not my fault in the first place.
Microsoft really should start fixing the RROD rather than other crap we don’t need.
hey spoony…ever thought of switching to PS3 (^_~)
Damn. Everything is falling apart around you, isn’t it, Noah?
On topic, yeah, the Red Ring sucks ass. The fact that Microsoft continues to push out the 360 while knowing the high tendency to malfunction like that is just not good for anyone, especially not the consumer.
But, all of it makes Microsoft’s wallet heavier, so they’re probably thinking “Who cares!”
Just thought of a couple of things you can do Spoony (if you ever read this far into the comments). First of all, I heard of guides online that tell you how to fix your Xbox 360. The other thing is look on craigslist for repair places. I can’t say for certain that there will be places in your area but it’s worth looking into instead of buying a whole new system.
I think they made it so you can get the RROD (and the E74 error) free replaced forever since it’s a manufacturing defect, but they just stopped sending out the boxes to ship it to them for free. They’ll send you a label but you have to use your own box. Free fix, though, and yeah, it’s a few weeks. That sucks; I got mine used and I think it was already repaired. It’s something with the solder on the motherboard and an undersized heat sink that doesn’t do a good enough job to keep the solder from melting.
Sorry about your 360 spoony.I just got a PS3 so I wouldn’t have to deal with these problems.
You know you can buy a kit for fixing the RROD for like 15-20 dollars right?
All you need is a soldering iron and the knowledge to use it, it’s not complicated at all to install.
Obviously I wouldn’t suggest it unless you are out of warranty but I have never heard of anyone screwing up an install of a RROD kit.
you may want to check it out.
Meh dont worry the 360 sucks anyway
oh spoony let me tell you a story about a man named PS. PS bought an xbox360 as you did after 9 months of joy red ring he didn’t let it get to him.So he sent his back and was happy again a month later. until 2 weeks later………. it happened again during CODMW. he was angry but not to disappointment so he sent it back and another month went by.He was playing oblivion whet the xbox froze. oh it sent him into a spiraling fury when it turned red he had the xbox no less than a month. He decided to trade all his games in he had it he got a hammer and a screwgun
and destroyed the 360. the end
Looking back. I’m actually glad that my first 360 RRODed. The thing never worked all that well. Random disk read errors plagues me since day one. After the warranty expired, the thing started having trouble reading the games at all. Finally, last summer, the thing just died. Still within the extended warranty for RROD, I sent it in and… I’m not sure if it’s refurbished or new (looked new), but the console they sent me as a replacement works wonderfully. Unfortunately, I’m fucked if this one RRODs, but hopefully that doesn’t happen too soon. Sorry about yours, Spoony.
that why go with Sony Ps3 you never have to worry dead ring people and isee you have one btw you cant watch any movies on the 360 why not watch it on your ps3? thats why you dont RUSH a system out like Gaysoft, sony did a did a good thing ive been having my ps3 since the day it came STILL NO PROBLEM! HAHAHA
Sorry bout your 360 buddy that sucks I am on number two. Did go PS3 exclusive for a bit but no games or no DLC for games like Fallout 3 even though they available on 360. If one dies I got the other really can’t lose and I won’t miss out on any games anymore either,
as i understand it though i may be wrong, the red ring of death problem is permanently covered due to the fact that it is a manufacturing problem, rather than an age thing or anything like that. just check their website. it says so on there i’m pretty sure.
Such a sincere video, but you guys are so dependent on air conditioning. One day you might realize that it is literally impossible to survive without it.
Next time your A/C breaks you should come stay at my place! When the A/C goes out is when I start thinking about how I need to get out of AZ.
WOW what a coincidence! My Xbox got the RROD the exact same day that yours did! I feel ya man.
Does this mean you are going to do an in memorium photo/tribute like each celebrity that dies?Seems fitting.
Samn that sucks, I hope I never see the RROD, mine is like the first version of the premium Xbox 360, really old when it comes to 360s only and arcade 360 would be older, and it’s still working, I don’t know if I have the 360 of the gods or something, but I hope mine lasts as long as my Genesis, that still works =P
Wow, our Xbox packed in too. We have to wrap it in towels every few weeks because we’re not paying the £80 Microsoft is demanding (afterall, we could get a brand new one at that price).
Since your Xbox is out of waranty, you could try to take it to a repair shop to get it fixed. It won’t be as expensive and they could probably get the job done faster.
You’re totally right about the old consoles that still work, though. We have two SNESes that work perfectly. And I must have dropped my old Game Boy like a bazillion times, but that still works. I guess they just don’t build consoles like they used to =/
M$ used to stick by that nonsense, but not anymore. Sony lost a fairly large class action lawsuit over the Disc Read Error fiasco w/ their PS2. And frankly, M$ would rather you have a working console so you can continue to buy games for it than for you to not have one and not buy games.
Also, the more recent 360s are a bit more reliable than the old ones. I LOL when people talk about how magical the PS3 is, it’ll never break down! haha, wrong. They have a fairly high failure rate as well, it’s just not nearly as high as the 360′s. All cd-based systems have these kinds of problems, but the PS2 and the 360 were both made sho-diddly-oddy. I’ve got several busted Sega CD units, for instance. The early PS1 units had an overheating problem, the Dreamcasts died all the time, etc etc. That’s because cd parts are a lot more touchy then cartridge stuff. There’s not a thing you can’t touch inside an SNES, unlike any CD or DVD unit.
This is an overheating problem. This happened to me yesterday so I unplugged it and pluged it in and then it work just fine. So just try that. Or let it cool down and don’t play it for a while.
I’ve replaced my Xbox 3 fucking times. I’ve had my SNES for like fifteen years and it still plays games perfectly. Isn’t that sad?
You know how there are those stages of the red ring? How it starts off at one quarter of the ring lights up green, and then two, and so on and so forth?
Well, I suggest you just turn your XBox off after one quarter pops up and let it cool. If all else fails, open up your XBox, remove the memory, and do the whole master reset thing.
dont cry spoony ;(. you’ll be ok! now turn that frown upside down ;)
Hey Noah this idea might sound stupid but hear me out! Stand the xbox vertically so the power button is near the bottom. by placing on its side you’re blocking 2 vents so your xbox is overheating.
Buy a god dammit PS3! It will live along you forever!
Spoony! Don’t fix it! you know why, it’s going to happen again.
I was considering buying a 360, but then I recalled the ring of death + the pay to play online and I skipped it…
ps. I hate microsoft and this is just one of the many reasons.
It could be that it’s gotten over used. I got my 360 the week it came out and played it from that Sunday to about Friday without pause and it started on fire. The same w/ ma PS3, only it asploded and took out my $55000 HDTV Flat screen. Regardless, I was pissed I didn’t get my camera to record it and post it on YT.
Still, it has to do with how old the hardware is, cause if its one of the first it has fairly poor hardware and Microsoft found that out ~2 1/2 hours before national launch. (Insert FAIL! here)
Its strange, I recently got the ring of death, but I turned it off and then turned it back on to get COD4 out and the mother fucker worked like nothing happend
you dumbfucks, the PS3 is still a pile of miserable shit, no games, no DLC, and it’s still goddamn expensive compared to the 360. I own both systems, but i gotta be honest. i’ll replace my 360 when it breaks, but when my PS3 breaks, i’ll just say fuck it, cause the PS3 is not worth it. i regret buying it. oh and fuck the wii, too. it’s worse than the PS3, i sold my wii, less than 72 hours after i bought it, it’s so over hyped, and boring as all hell. all of the new consoles suck, but the 360 is the reigning king, hands down. but worse comes to worse i’ll bury all three of the new systems and go back to good fun consoles like PS2, N64, Dreamcast, and NES.
Did nobody see the PS3 in the video, sitting right there?
I have an xbox 360 elite and it constantly gets overheated (2 red lights) i’ve bought a fan and that doesn’t seem to work it works fine when i open a window but once summer’s over I can’t keep doing that so does anyone have any ideas they’d be much appreciated
The same just happened to me. Christ… Kudos to Microsoft for this awesome technology, shame on us for actually wanting to use the console.
So true with old consoles. I too have an elder genesis sitting in my closet. I plugged it up some years ago and it worked perfectly fine. All I needed to do was to dust the cartridges a bit and voila. Even my ps2, bought back in 2004 is still running fine. I have been temptated to get my hands on this gen consoles but hearing these technical malfunctions always manages to push me back… as I’m no way a technical wiz.
It’s funny with all the electric equipment nowdays, as the technology advances, the shorter their lifespan gets.
For example after mobiles got color upgrade and cameras and bluetooth their battery life has cutted down to half… And even getting a new battery isn’t worth it. Better just to buy a whole new phone. I bought new battery for my 3 year old nokia. Less than 3 months… and my phone runs low on juice within a day. Le sigh.
Get a ps3. I had gone through two xboxs as well and I said fuck it and got a ps3 and never looked back.
Ugh, know the feeling. We turned on both of my friends’ 360s in the same sitting to find simultaneous red rings. I’m just waiting for the day mine goes too.
Yes! Thank you for making the point that I’ve made to my gamer friends for like 3 years. The Next Gen Consoles are like frikkin PC’s. My Super NES still works, my NES works, my genesis, N64. ALL STILL WORK. Meanwhile their shipping their Xbox 360′s off every other month to get it fixed and bitching at ME for not catching up in the gaming industry. Cripes. Sucks to hear man. That shit is a pain.
Also thanks for saying hi and takin a pic with me at Comic Con with Linkara! Or was that Insano?
You guys rule!
It is hard for me to sympathize with people who buy 360s while knowing the problem of quality.
I actually just got the RRoD a little after this video was posted and I was crushed. I did a little google research though and managed to fix it without towels or anything. I had to open it up which intimidated me but all it involved was making a better mounting for the heatsyncs on the xbox with some screws and washers. I was so amazed and proud of myself when it actually worked. I’d encourage you to try it.
Hey man try this if you get a New X-box open the casing and submerge it in cocking oil In the style of “cool your PC with cocking oil” , remember to isolate the casing and let your cables and impute and output stuff be free from oil. I Hypothesize its because of the heat and some cooling system of your Xbox is burning out and that will result in one of your transistors burning.
You must understand in our days we are riding the silicon limit to the max , we are at the limits of silicon computing and without radical cooling (water , oil ) you will not go on , the fans fail fast. In the old days consoles/computers didn’t need cooling , check it out open up your old console casing and try to find a cooling unit. It all ended with the N64 with whose cooled by a steal plate attached to it now you have air cooling with every console. The old ones will not fail so easy like today’s ones because of that.
Besides if it fails after its expiration date you will give more
$$$$ to the producer by getting a new one , why would they fix the problem if it brings them money ???
I understand that not everyone is so crafty like me however if you would like to have a console that will not fail get it in oil that will fix the problem for ever.
Google “cool your PC with oil” or youtube it and you will see how to do it or get someone to do it for you .
PS : I advise you to do it on a new one the old is dead , use double or triple isolation you don’t wont to have 200C oil spilled somewhere dude.
you can buy an external cooling unit to help with the whole over heating problem
you can do the penny trick and it will fix your xbox forever and its free look it up on youtube
Not to say these consoles are reliable, but looking at that picture for two seconds I can tell you what the problem is. That spot is completely unsuitable for an Xbox 360. It needs to be an an open shelf: no shelf above it, no other devices crammed in around it. With the thermodynamic nightmare (read: oven) you’re creating by keeping it it that spot, it’s no wonder this isn’t your first RRoD.
No, Spoony, don’t send it in. Hop on Ebay and get a refurbished one, you can get it for less than the repair. I bought mine for $70 including shipping and I saw many more.
Sorry Spoony but i bet my missery will make u feel beter my 360 still works but my PS3 broke and that pissd me off
Gah! Mine just went yesterday, I feel absolute pig sick… not the best term I now realise.
Ahh damn man. Mine’s died on me several times, can’t believe it’s lasted this long now xD.
You could always watch Dune on that there PS3 :P.
First: I’m fine thanks.
And yeah my 360 works perfectly, never had a single prob with it.
I thought i had got the red ring of death once but the problem was the scart cable thing that goes in to the xbox 360. It was loose. After my panicattack i tried to take the cables in and out then it worked agan.
Excuse me for my really sucky english ;_;
Oh sweetheart, i think i would cry if my 360 red ringed, i know you have got it fixed now but still… do you want a hug? lol xxx
Oh, that’s nothing. All of my electric equipment breaks down within six months after purchase, and six months later again, and again and again.
I stopped buying new stuff because it’ll break down anyway, and you can sometimes get used stuff with warranty, at least you can over here. In the Netherlands.
That being said, my Playstation one which I mistreated greatly when I was a kid, still works.
oh man .. not to be sadistic but this is so good
for all the affected angry nerd rage in this little net niche, this video rings a true tone, dunno why the defeated-genuinely-depressed turn is, but it is hilarious
Yeah the three rings is just a great big ‘fuck you’ from microsoft to you…. Also don’t try any of the tricks people say that work (Ex: The penny trick, the three rugs or whatever it is) all thoese do is DESTORY the 360 even more.
That’s fucked up. The same thing happened to me, I was trying to watch The Office and it just fucking died. The room I have had it in, is generally cool and dry at all times, so I never needed a piece of shit cooling system (which if the system needs it…why do we have to pay for it? That’s bullshit.), so the problem probably isn’t a heating issue at all. It just means that the system itself is a pile of shit. This 360 is over 2 years old, so I thought I had gotten lucky with my purchase. Wrong.
You rock Spoony,
red ring of death is fix for free. Sorry Spoony
Spoony man look on xbox.com you can get the red ring of death fixed for free even if it’s out of warranty. I did and i got mine the very first year xbox360 came out and i didn’t get the extended warranty.
Dude that sucks. My 360 has done that twice but it fixed itself after I turned it off for a couple hours. Both times were within the first three months I had it :P. Since then I never had a problem.
Even after I got my Macbook :D.
Oh, and both times it happened I was playing Halo 3, or was about to.
Hope it gets better man. Your vids kick ass. (Especially Yor – My favorite)
your best bet is ebay you will got one for a low price and get it in less than a week i got mine on it an i got it with in 3 days lol hope you find a good one man take care
Well I’ve experienced the same thing my self.
For obvious reasons I used something to cover it from dust. Bad decision I figured when the Red ring appeared.
Not the one with three stars around, but two. The problem is, I tried to cool it down for at least 24 hours if not even more, but still no result. It just died.
I still had some warranty left though. But serious, I was so pissed that I went to the store and bought my self the Elite version.
Not that it have less faults, but for the record I think it’s better then to send that box for some lousy repairs that will cost more then it’s worth. I mean what possible chance won’t there be, that the machine will broke shortly there after.
I hate the high fault score from Microsoft, as obvious they didn’t worked on their home lesson well enough.
So my advice, bust it, bye a Elite, get a new three year service, and also make sure to visit the support and ask for that removable memory cable. For obvious reasons it’s for free, but you can’t retrieve it in the local store. I just used my memory card my self. But, I hadn’t that much on my old one.
I wish better luck on whatever you’ll decide.
Also, becoming a great fan of watching videos from you. I know that was off topic, but serious I’d like you to know.
JUST PLAY UR MOVIES IN UR PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spoony, I’m glad your smart about the towel trick. The Towel Trick is the worst thing to do to a 360. It fries the CPU and it only last several days. There are other ways of getting it to work again, best I think is the xclamp method.
I am on my 2nd 360. First one was refurbished from a company who didnt fix it right, and my 2nd one I’ve had for 5 months and it still works fine as it has a custom air vent on the top and I keep it in a cool place.
Don’t buy one on ebay. They seem cheap but thats because they were already RRoD and someone just fixed it and said it works. Plus I think Microsoft can fix a 360 RROD for free
this is why i stay away from xbox at all costs
i keep dreading the day my xbox goes…..its not bad the now cause ave got a cooler for it but well see how long that lasts.
I can tell you how to fix it…. in 1 or 3 hours…
the real thing… if you’re smart… and a little clever you would be able to do it yourself…
I mean no seriously, ill tell you how to do it… and it will never crash again…
The whole concept of the Red Ring of Death really just pisses everyone off. I must say that the location is rather tight, not allowing enough open room for it to vent. I actually have a cooling system for my computer [a simple plate with small fans and much room between the system and the top of the table/desk], and I have found it to work well with almost anything. Keeping it in an open area and using the cooling unit really does help. This computer has been kicking for over a decade, only plagued by the lack of space to use for gaming.
And, I loooove to play the old systems, too. However, for some reason, I tend to play my old NES a lot. The Olympics is always fun for some reason [with the running pad and all], and it gives me a reason to get off the couch [along with every single Wii game I own, including couch ones like SSBB]. Just keep your cool. I blew a fuse when my a copy of WWF Smackdown for my PS1 shattered immediately after I got it [my PS1 just barely expiring in its Warrentee...]. I literally took a hammer to a tree, screaming “I WILL KILL YOU SOUL!” Yes, I did that many years ago. Just look where I am now. I think that I would take a sword to the tree if my newer systems [almost all just expiring in Warrentee] die. But, whatever, it’s just a game. I find writing to be an enjoyable substitute [loses 5 man cards] if anything goes under [has 3 returned].
Just keep your cool when it happens, Spoony. Know that you have a masive fan-base that is supporting you.
I got a odd sense of deja vu after watching your video. The same exact same thing happened to me this July! My 360 got the red ring of death for the second time and it happened a few months after my warranty expired. I kept thinking about how it wasn’t fair since I take good care of all my other video games & consoles. (Which all still work!) I haven’t sent the Xbox for repairs yet because I really don’t want to pay Mircosoft for fixing a console which shouldn’t keep breaking down in the first place.
God, that sucked. I was pissed when my Elite got 1 ring after the hardware scaler chip copped out, while playing fucking Guitar Hero 3! It leads me to believe Microsoft are an evil corporation, since they wont deal with hackers taking peoples gamertags, and they dont answer my desired questions, as well as treat you like an utter retard.
Hope I can play you on Xbox Live sometime, that’d be great.
hey spoony i can fix it if you send it to me. i have thermal compound and the knowledge of how to fix it. the same thing happened with my computer. the thermal compound wore out and the processor no longer had a way to transfer heat to the heatsink. its quick its painless and only cost you to ship it.
I have an old brick PS2 that has never broke down. =] granted X-box games are better, Kingdom Hearts ftw.
I agree with other posters about the location of the xbox being a cause of the red ring.
I do have another option that you may like.
The game stores sell a booster fan device that you plug into the back of the xbox.
It has 3 extra fans that increase the cooling action of the system.
Use the PS3 fool!
I’ve dropped systems (PS1, N64, Gameboy; I threw that in anger a few time; Game cube PS2, PS3, Wii) and they all still work. I’m even missing the front of my PS2 disk tray (DAMN YOU BROTHER!!!!) and it still works.
I blame the amount of time they spent on the system so they get a head start on Wii and PS3.
Sorry about your Xbox 360. Microsuck should offer you a warranty for this type of failure (at least 2 if not 3 years). Don’t bother repairing it yourself. The heat cracks some of the binders holding the components together in the console and so the components can start moving into places they shouldn’t be in.
On the other hand, you have SNES there. Very nice. Notice that those never fail?
If you have the time you could try the clamp fix, Spoony King, you are a computer engieneer ;)
I have the solution to this problem, buy a PS3! :D
Jorda75 the PS3 can be just as bad it has the yellow light of death
Sometimes things fail to be funny because they’re just so wrong, and that’s your comment. You’re automatically proven wrong just because most gamers probably don’t even know the Yellow Light of Death exists, while most do know the Red Ring of Death exists. Not only that, but statistically, you’re (roughly – I can’t remember exacts) only about 5%-10% likely to get a Yellow Light of death, and it’s even less with newer PS3′s. Red ring of death seems to be around 90%.
That's true but it's not nearly as pervasive as the red rings of death. Noone I know has gotten the yellow light of death but pretty much half the X-Box owners I know have had RROD, usually more than once.
With a name like 'Xbox 360', you know you'll do a 180 when you box yourself in your room to play extreme games, but you'll eventually come full circle to buy another one soon. The name itself implies that you'll eventually have to go back to start, the manufacturers will collect another hundred, and you'll go back around until monopoly brings you back to “Reighd O'e” (I think it sounds cooler than Ring-O-Death).It might be done on purpose! The factories make bad consoles with good games so that you keep suckering in to keep re-buying or repairing the console.
Look at the video again. What's to the right of his 360? A PS3 :D
I find the fact you have a Super Nintendo thats still obviously in use sitting under that cutting edge high-tech useless brick.
Yeah I got the Ring while RE5 was autosaving, by the way, Spoony you should Review that one, or even better the God Awful Code Veronica series.
But the Red Ring Blows, the Yellow bar of death (PS3) yeah that blows to, but from what I heard it is very rare and you it is from some sort of virus
Hooah I love my PS3, ever since I got it a month ago I haven't even turned on my Xbox
Where you supposed to end that sentence with “funny”?
I went through one of my xboxes as well, i ironically loaned it to my uncle while HIS WAS BROKEN and it broke in his possession.
Of course i was pretty pissed off about that however they replaced it and he bought a new box for himself, my replacement hasn't died yet but when it does i will probably get a PS3.
That's what was great about the brick console players made in the 80's and 90's!I beat the SHIT out of my Sega Genesis and it still works! It freezes all the time but if I just blow into the cartridge it's fine.
I'm not sure exactly how long I've had my 360, at least 2 to 3 years now, and I am so glad I havent had the unfortunate luck fo many to recieave the red ring of death. I've had it freeze afew times. I have seen the a partial ring, only when the power goes out and if its on. but it still worked. I'm sorry Spoony, be strong.
So guess what, yep red ring of fucking death strikes again!I had held out hope that maybe I was one of the lucky ones. Turns out luck, is a bitch, and shes back in heat. Now I know how it feels, and it sucks.

I don’t mean this in a rude way dude, but it is kinda funny how you said that yours had not had the red ring of death in the 2-3 years that you had it. Then 2 days later it happens. But like I said, I don’t mean that in a rude way.
I call it karma.
You know what the sad thing is? I bought it used, so no warrenty?!
So now not only do I have to replace it, I have to buy a new one?!
Now that really sucks.
Mine has never had this shit, I wish i wasn’t a special case.
Had it happen to me, I sold my 360 on kreigs list after it happened the second time, and then I bought a PS triple, havent had a problem ever since.
one of the many reasons ps3 is just a better product….
ps. I own all 3 next gen consoles…not a fan boy at all
To be honest, the PS3 is a better DVD player anyway.
That does suck, though. I miss my 360 (Mine was stolen)
For a second I thought “99°?! Very funy, water boils at that tempe…oh, Fahrenheit. You americans with your silly scales”
I’ve had a PS2 for at least seven years, and the only problem I had was easily fixed with a swiss army knife. My PS3 has never had problems at all.
Oh hei, Shocking Dark! Awesome!
Stop saying “geek”, its called “Nerd”! xD
sorry, watched another vlog that appeared after the RRoD.
Disqus has a really sweet “Edit” button.
ive3 had my xbox 360 since the day it came out works perfectly never done anything to it
I know this is an older video, but christ, I can sympathize with you. I got the red ring of death 3 times in the span of two weeks once, then it happened again this year. I switched to PS3. No more red rings.
XBoxs have the same problem that many laptops have. They have BALL GRID ARRAY video chips, instead of video cards. Basically, instead of a video card, it’s a chip that is soldered to the mother board in this really weird solder balls array.
The problem is, if you play it a ton, the thing overheats! Which causes the solder balls to melt, which screws up the whole BALL GRID and makes the balls melt together! It’s a TERRIBLE DESIGN!
If you get video glitching on a mac laptop? THIS IS WHY. It killed my macbookpro, and eventually it’ll kill my imac. Older tech doesn’t have these vid chip ball grid arrays, and so guess what? IT DOESNT BREAK!
Man i know how this feels, mine broke down about five months ago after keeping it in mint shape, it was a year over the 3 year warrenty when it broke, i called the company and they said they could fix it for $120. considering the fac t i don’t have that kind of money i couldn’t get it fix, plus i seen videos and warnings stating that %60 of the time they come back still broke and cost you another 100-120 to fix it.
I then bought one from on of my family members, it works and all, but the door doesn’t open 90% of the time and if i try to manually open it’ It doesn’t, to test how long it took i pushed the button to open and about 15 minutes later it opened. so i need to use a hook to open it. so i’ve been having bad luck with 360s, though i like the games the new system technology is ball grindingly frustrating.
I’ve never had the RRoD!
…but I have E74′d.
You only have yourself to blame.
You were going to watch Dune, the Xbox refused to allow you to watch such crap on it.
I really sympathise with you, quite a few of my friends have had this problem too and it’s an absolute nightmare for anybody. It has never happened to me though or my younger brother (I play my xbox occasionally and my brother plays it ALL the time) so I guess we were just lucky ^^ I have heard my friends theorize that the companies make the xbox’s breakable on purpose to get more money from people (either for the repairs or buy new xbox’s altogether)…. I have no idea how true that is haha!
I’ve been told that if its only a half ring, you can fix it by turning iy upside down & leaving it on the dashboard, because the Sauder wire has an extreamly low melting temperture, & it needs to melt back into place. But yeah, 3/4′s, might as well just get a new 360.
The solution is to have it verticaly. It helps, because the guy that did project for the heatsink mounting fas a FUCKING MORON. chips heat up, the board gets tensile, heatsink makes it bend and the solder cracks = dead XBOX… What were they thinking?
no when you see it unplug it then put it back it. ive went through it three times and mine still works
