Oh god, this game is suffering from Xenosaga syndrome. They shove a bunch of foreign technobabble up your ass, and expect you to know what the hell they’re talking about. About a third of the way though the conversation, and you’ve zoned out completely. So, please, tell me what the hell is going on? Apparently there’s this crazy green guy named the Ripper who likes to rip things, namely internal organs, and he sends all of his murder letter to Quinlan, a reporter who then publishes them in the paper. His girlfriend gets a lead on the identity of the Ripper, but then she gets too close for the Ripper’s liking, and she is attacked. Fortunately, she survives, but is put into a coma…somehow. She has the identity of the Ripper in her head, but it’s fragmented, and now Quinlan has to find clues that can be transmitted inside of her head in order to fill in the blanks. To do this, he goes to the police station, where he finds Magnotta, a rogue officer that can’t be trusted. He also learns that Renee, Ripper’s previous victim, was in the library the night she died. He then goes into that insane cyberspace to the library, where he learns the Renee was into the historical Jack the Ripper. He then solves that weird crystal puzzle to learn that his girlfriend was into the Horoscopes, something you could figure out by just walking into her apartment, and then he goes and meets Jimmie Walker and Burgess Meredith for…some reason, and that’s all I got.

This is the second time that the game pretends the gamer to be super-precise: first the cup (in the prologue) and now the crystal puzzle…and both seem a waste of time when you’ve finished them. Surely they’re going to have some sort of meaning in future…

Ripper must’ve had the most apathetic director in the history of filmmaking, either that or he was too intimidated by all the big-named stars to actually give any sort of direction to them. *Sigh* I really wanted to like this game, give it a chance what with Christopher freakin’ Walken and all. But in the end, despite the cast, the mechanics of the game are just your usual badly executed FMV adventure game. I guess Gabriel Knight and Tex Murphy keep their distinctions for being the kings of that genre. :)

Crystal Puzzle: So it’s basically the rocket ship sound puzzle from Myst. And considering how many big names are in this I think this game proves that just being a good actor doesn’t mean jack squat without good direction from whoever is in charge…… or the money to be motivated to act good.

This first puzzle really bothered me.
I had absolutely no idea how ‘no_iaid’ could possibly ‘translate’ to 2020 and why Spoony didn’t seem to have any problems making this connection.
It took me a few google searches to realize that living in germany and avoiding doctors wherever possible doesn’t exactly help to figure this out.
I haven’t seen a Snellen chart for over a decade and even if I would have done so and actually paid attention to the numbers on the side, I still wouldn’t associate standard vision with anything other than 6/6 because of the the metric system.
It’s fascinating how such a seemingly trivial thing can almost become an unsolvable mystery if presented to someone from another part of the western world.

I totally agree ! I’m french, and I thought the riddle was impossible to solve. I came up with HC_ _ _ _R and I was like “What the… ?!”. As you said, I was surprised that Spoony didn’t seem to have any trouble solving it… and thanks to you, I figured out why ! (BTW, here it’s 10/10)

I totally agree ! I’m french, and I thought the riddle was impossible to solve. I came up with HC_ _ _ _R and I was like “What the… ?!”. As you said, I was surprised that Spoony didn’t seem to have any trouble solving it… and thanks to you, I figured out why ! (BTW, here it’s 10/10)

What I like about this game is that it dates back to that “Mondo 2000″, early-”Wired Magazine” period (1991-97) when people actually thought that the Web was going to be some sort of virtual reality zone out of Gibson’s “Neuromancer”…that meme died a hard death. BTW, the “well” they talk about referrs to the Whole Earth `Lectronic Link, an early search engine/super links page; also has anyone mentioned that this was Burgess Meredith’s last “film” project?

I know what you’re saying, but Phantasmagoria was more interesting because it was more like a “usual horror movie”. Closer to earth and easier to understand.

I’m however pretty sure that this game is going to be much more intense in next acts and if not, Spoony’s commentary will still make it worth watching

Pointlessly after the fact, but in 95 or so, you could always have hit Andy Eddy’s FTP site which hosted tons of FAQ’s for games. It had a crappy user interface, no skull headed woman in a skimpy outfit shooting files into your forehead or anything, but walkthroughs were available even before the WWW was widespread.

That crystal puzzle was ridicilous. Not (only) because of its insane difficulty but because it makes no frikkin sense. So what if someone, I dunno, MOVED the book? Or put something in the laser’s way, like a chair or a rack for drying clothes? Or if someone, like, slightly nudged the skull, the crystal box or the desk it stood on? To be frank, odds are one’s first thought upon solving the puzzle was that he failed some strange security check, not that the odd laser show was an actual reward…

I agree with old man murray. FPS’s didn’t kill off the adventure games, they obviously committed suicide…

Thank you so much for giving this game a run-around. I played it all the way up to CD 6, and then the CD crapped out on me, just as I was about to enter the final Well. So I’ve only seen the ending on YouTube, and that sucks, because the whole point of the game is that the Ripper can be one of four different characters in the game – and the game randomizes the identity of the Ripper for each new game. So I’ll never know who the Ripper was in my game.

I wonder who yours will be. :)

It’s the Library of Congress system. It’s used by many libraries in the U.S., though I don’t think as many use it as the Dewey.
