Speaking of "The Long Walk", why hasn't that one been made into a movie yet?
  • HeartBurnKid
"I knew Running Man (the horrible bastardization of the Richard Bachman/Stephen King novel, “the Long Walk”). "

Actually, no. The Running Man was a horrible bastardization of the Richard Bachman/Stephen King novel, The Running Man. The Long Walk is a completely separate book.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought "Running Man" when I saw the preview for Gamer.
  • Baramos
Besides being a rip-off of Running Man (and lots of other movies--seriously, even if they don't follow an exact formula there have been plenty of books and movie plots that involve condemned prisoners forced to fight each other for entertainment, so it's been done a hundred times, not just once or twice, before), I found Michael Hall's gratingly annoying sterotypical Southern accent during the preview to be grounds enough for not watching it, as if I felt that annoyed during a minute trailer I felt I would be driven insane during a two-hour movie.

I like the guy in Dexter but its depressing that this is his major blockbuster film debut since his "acting" seems to be horrific. Probably the fault of the creators.

BTW, I LIKE fps/3ps games, I just hate most modern titles. And even if I didn't hate them, it bothers me that apparently that's the only genre worth noting. The hell happened to platformers or action/adventure titles being the main? Sigh....

I miss the days when games weren't so fucking mainstream. Don't get me wrong, I've always wanted games to get more popular and in demand, raking in more money, because I wanted the world to see video games as an interactive art form, and a fun and great experience. As well, I wanted great games to get money so more great games could be made. Not what happened. We get tons of tongue and cheek unoriginal brain dead poorly written first person shooters hogging up the market, and suddenly that's the only genre of gaming that exists outside of sports games. Yeah, you're a gamer because you play another game with a floating gun. Hell, if it's not fps games, or even 3ps games, it's some fucking MMO(like that NCIS episode Spoony reviewed). Now that developers are finally releasing several other genres, the media/casual fucks still haven't a single clue. It's like the media is ALWAYS one or two or, hell. ten steps behind the real world. I saw a commercial about seatbelts that involved a kid sitting around playing a GTA look alike. Stop it. Please. for the love of fucking god, stop it. I just... I can't take it anymore. This isn't how I wanted it to heppen.

I do not see any similarities in between the movies nor was I reminded of Running Man when I saw it. I generally like it for what it was a sci-fi flick that being said Gerard Butler and Michael Hall are amazing. The concept that was set up in the movie is very nice referencing, Second Life and multiple FPS games. I like how the point of the movie was simply to point out that we are puppets in a way in our society, and our Human self indulging and selfdestructive nature. I can pull more out but Im going to stop here. Over all a decent sci-fi flick, & very violent =)))

I HOPE YOU LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR MY FIST BECAUSE I'M GOING TO RAM IT INTO YOUR STOMACH AND BREAK YOUR GODDAMN SPINE!

In a world where the internets have taken over. One man must fight for his freedom, controlled by another man, controlled by his lust for mountain dew and cheetos. Jamie Lee Curtis, Gene Wilder and Morgan Freeman (as the internets) star in Gamer! Will the sun come out tomorrow? You better bet you bottom dollar!

Sorry yeah, great 5-second movie. I'm glad people notice that is just a retread of The Running Man. Also, if you haven't seen The Running Man, go rent or buy it. It's classic Arnold and even features an annoying female love interest/side kick.

... wich was a rip-off of the german movie "Das Millionenspiel" from 1970 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066079/
  • WolfmanWalt
@63 - Well, if you didn't know it yet The Running Man is the film adaption of a Stephen King story by the same name which was printed in 1982. I highly doubt that the film version is ripping off the French short film that came out after the story was published, though to be completely fair Le Prix du Danger is based off of a 1958 book which was also made into Germany's Das Millionspiel (1970). Still, the point is. Didn't rip off of the French film.
  • Lars
    haha nice one spoony :)

Well, if you don't know it yet The Running Man (1987) is a rip-off of the french film Le Prix du Danger (1983)

  • this just made me want to watch running man again for the 1000th time, hell I could watch it a million times and still stay as far away from Gerard Butler as humanly possible
  • The movie was awful. You could have watched The Running Man and Crank side by side and had a better movie.
  • diggerjohn111
Oh yeah. It is it's own book. I just looked it up. not some of King's best. I stand corrected Bill.
  • Bill
    Response to diggerjohn111...

The Long Walk was a different story altogether. The Running Man novel still had the character Ben Richards and Dan (Damon in the movie) Killian, but was still very different from the movie. But it is understandable that those stories could get mixed up with one another. :)
  • superhyperduck
lionheart, you need to get off the planet because you haven't seen running man! but seriously all arnold's old flicks are classics in their own way. Its cheesy, silly, and a real critic would probably consider it total garbage but its a classic action flick and arnold lifts a car. (like in everyother movie he's in) it has the one liners, the insane gore and over the top game show ham acting, but its original and fun. Watch it for entertainment don't try and get anything else out of it or else people will think your crazy.
  • Booze Zombie
    Ha, ha, ha!

    Nice one!
  • Xylon Lionheart
So after reading up on Running Man, that movie doesn't sound half bad. Can anybody who has seen it give me their opinion of Running Man? I love how Richard Dawson is the game's host. SURVEY SAYS!
  • diggerjohn111
I knew Running Man (the horrible bastardization of the Richard Bachman/Stephen King novel, "the Long Walk"). I just didn't know what "Gamer" was. I looked it up, and it does look like a horrible clone of "Running Man" and as someone said, the Super NES classic "Smash TV".
  • Xvall
I liked the movie. The premise wasn't really original but honestly I was a lot more interested in the social commentary about our culture's internet habbits, which seemed spot on.
  • WarriorBond
I hope you leave enough room for my fist, because I'm going to ram it into your stomach AND BREAK YOUR GOD DAMN SPINE AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
  • TheloniusFunk
NO! DERE ARE INNOCENT WOMEN AND CHILDREN DOWN DERE!
  • VoidKeeper
    SMASH TV!!!!!!!!!!
  • Damn you, Dawson! You're going to haunt me throughout my life, aren't you?

Still, "Only in a rerun," is lulz-worthy.
  • Pinworm
    Funny.

I think people are over-embellishing the similiarities, though. The similiarities start and end with "convicts can choose to play a game where their life, and freedom, is at risk". Gamer was more about things related to the internet, and I know a lot of it will be missed on people. The second life references were great.
  • wolfpreist
seriously, the end "game" of the movie, when the whole plot/reason for micheal c hall's char creating the games is reviled, so far from RM it's funny... yeah "con's play games for the masses entertainment" sounds similar, but there's more going on in Gamer than cooperate greed....
  • wolfpreist
what? running man? did the antagionist from RM have a god complex? i call fail on this one spoony...
  • Karikaze
It feels like he use that phrase in his every movie. Or is it only me..
