I've never been into board games, but you have a way of making games sound interesting!
  • SpotWeld
See, now I want to subject Spoony to a full session of Arkham Horror (with expansions), just to see what effect it has on him.. heh heh heh
  • AddleBoy
I was wondering how many spoilers the game and extension have if anyone knows. I love Battlestar Galactica, but I've only seen up to half of the second season.

How can you sya you hate Bufy? I am not saying "You suck because you don't like it", I mean my best friend form the university doesn't like it, you can not like the show, I mean it was too much "teen angst" in the earlier seasons, and that almost set me off, but it got better later, but as far as hating it? I don't know I just have curiosity on why you hate it. or maybe you are just exagerating a little about your distaste for it.
  • Jim__
oh no! how can you not like Galactica (the show)?!?!
  • Swordyyz
Is it me or did you seem to be having way too much fun at the end there?
  • baba
Spoony, while we're at boardgames, have you tried the latest release (or re-release) of the beloved vintage boardgame: Space Hulk?

Judging by the stuff you do on this site, it seems to be right up your alley. However the game is kinda expensive and was only really available for the short time frame so I guess it might have slipped under your radar..

As at least one of the other comments has mentioned, Betrayal At the House on the Hill is a phenomenal game, with everyone playing normally, exploring a haunted house-- Until a moment comes where one player turns out to either
    1-have just become the villain
    2-have always BEEN the villain
    or 3- Serve the villain
And then the game goes down one of 50 (at base) different paths. There is a fan expansion online that adds a dozen+ more scenarios, and the board itself is super-useful for RP purposes in general.

On a less BG related note-- I can understand you disliking Buffy and Angel, and everyone (rightfully) hates Dollhouse... But please tell me you left out 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' by matter of forgetful omission, as opposed to disliking it.
Because that would be a terrible thing- It is the best of its kind, ever, for a reason- And much of that is how well Joss and his fellows write music.
Plus- NPH and Nathan Fillion together with Felicia- Great times!
Thanks for the info on the Buffy board game, I might try to find it- No huge fan of the show, but if it is good, it is good.
Also, just to confirm- In one of your other recent pieces, that WAS the original Hunter the Reckoning core on your shelf, was it not? If so, ROCK ON SPOONY!
  • Meshi
Dude, you, Linkara, Critic, and AVGN should play that game together. Yes, I know that the four of you live very far apart, but I think it would be awesome.
  • CamaroCaron
Be in a chatty mood more often Spoony! We love listening to your opinions on obscure crap! Hell, isnt that why we all visit your website? lol
  • johnnyfog
I suspect he doesn't REALLY hate Angel, since he said he saw every episode on T.R.A.X vid.
  • Henrik
You hate two of the greates tv-shows ever made? Buffy and BSG are great.

And if you hate Angel, why did you make a post about the sad loss of an actor that has ONLY been on Angel.
  • Drake Bauer
Hahaha what a coincidence, I was at some friends tonight and i brought my copy of this game .... It was fun !, Turns out that I was human all the way but we got our asses kicked by the 3 cylons at mid game . Ah well ..

Since you are a fan of Firefly, what about a review of the Firefly RPG.

Have you tried the Game of Thrones board game? I'm afraid to compare it to Risk i anyway because i don't want to turn you off. However it is "like" Risk in a way that a dog is "like" a cat. It uses a non-dice mechanic and has an alliance/betrayal aspect that is purely up to the players and not hard wired into the game. You should look into it.

If you haven't already of course. ; )

The italian spaghetti western game someone mentioned earlier is called Bang!, and is pretty fun if you have a big enough group. :D All the cards are written in italian with smaller english subtitles.

i've been interested in getting the battlestar board game for some time but the problem is finding 4 people who like the show and are willing to sit down and play a board game for 4 hours.
  • god damn spoony... shave!

I gotta say, I'm interested in grabbing that Battlestar Galactica game and add it alongside my Arkham Horror collection.

Reminds me a lot of another game I play, a 2d multiplayer game on a space station. Primary round is Traitor, where one of around 20-60 of the players is a Syndicate traitor, with a very specific goal (Usually kill some one or be the only one to get off the station) that has to play along, hide his treachery, and fuck people up.

A bad traitor gets caught quickly by the usually paranoid players. Dragged to the brig, interrogated, usually dumped out the nearest airlock or beaten to death with something. But a good traitor, are great fun. Good ones can kill people before the crew is even aware he's made his move, sabotage vital equipment (Such as making the atmospheric pipes leak CO2 and knock the crew out), drop bombs, and just be a gigantic hilarious douchebag.

If you want a board game that's like buffy, where there's good guys and a villian, but the villain has just as good a chance of winning than the players, then I suggest Betrayal at House on the Hill. The game is REALLY hard to find nowadays since the company that made it has gone under I think, but my god it's fun.
Basically what you do is everybody starts out on the same side and you're all exploring this giant, creepy mansion kinda Scooby-Doo style. Though, along the way, you'll start picking up Omens, which either help or hurt your stats (Strength, Speed, Intelligence, and Sanity) and everytime an omen is picked up, you roll the Haunt. The Haunt reveals the traitor, and it's not always the person who fails the Haunt roll. That's the really clever thing about it though, is that nobody knows who the traitor is. Not even the traitor!
Then everybody consults this neat little book packed with about 100 or so scenarios for basically how the betrayer wants to kill you. It's amazing how many different scenarios there are. The house teleports to another dimension where the good guys can't survive for long, Aliens come to abduct you, the Traitor becomes a Werewolf, the Traitor tries to summon Satan, I could go on. It's just such a great game, because the mansion is never laid out the same way twice, you build up the mansion with these room tiles as you explore, and there's such a drastic heel turn to the game once the traitor is revealed. I can't recommend this board game enough.

I'd be pretty interested in hearing a rant on how and why you don't like Joss Whedon, actually. :-P
  • Shygetz
I love the BSG game; it's a regular favorite among our gaming group. But I think the expansion takes the game out of it's sweet spot and makes it a little too long for what it is.
  • Taquelli
I played with the Pegasus expansion for the first time as a Cylon from the get-go, while someone else was the Cylon leader. He infiltrated once and was instantly airlocked, which turned out to be exactly what he wanted, as his agenda was for the Cylons to win and to have been executed at least once. The ships hit the fan, and I just waitedit out until the opportune time on New Caprica to really hit the humans in the population when it couldn't take it and won easily, but I really dig the expansion, if only because it means that a player we have who hates the original game will play it with us again.

  • CodexBiohazardX0
    "Ahhahahaha!"
I did not like the Buffy or Angel show's myself.
They seemed sorta corny compared to the older show's that dealt with stuff like that like Beauty and the best, high lander and Forever Knight.
  • Taranaich
Oh, the cat's out of the bag now. You'll really have to explain your hatred of Buffy, though since I hate nBSG for the exact reasons you cite, I think I can guess what you dislike about Buffy too.

Still, the ideas of the Buffy & BSG games sound really rather fun. Just switch names about and it could be your own homebrew setting. I did that all the time with my games, mostly turning them into Simpsons parodies (like A Klingon Challenge, with Ensign Bart and Lieutennant Homer making life difficult for Kavok.) Silly nonsense like that.
