Nightmare certainly is the weakest of the series, though the expansion
tapes do help a bit. In terms or replayability the DVD Atmosfear is probably the best, though the time limit is cut down from an hour to 45 minutes, still plenty of time. The original Atmosfear was probably the best in terms of appearance and mood, and did make an attempt at replayability with allowing for the board to change with each playing. I the three versions and one Nightmare expansion, and I do say the Atmosfear games are definitely the most worthy of a playthrough

No joke, I watched this review, and then two days later my best friend texted me and told me to come over for game night. Guess what her and her boyfriend had just bought?

I think what Spoony neglects to acknowledge is that the game is SUPPOSED to last 45 minutes at least, which is why so much of the game is chance, to stretch it out to the last minute. When we played, we literally went to 58:57 before someone won.

Atmosphere/Atmosfear is the perfect name for what it is, because the real fun of the game is to get sucked into the atmosphere, to interact with the Gatekeeper and personalize the experience. Also it's a great drinking game. Take a drink everytime he calls you a maggot, if you get startled when he appears, says black hole (not if you're doing shots, you'll die of alcohol poisoning), etc. Also it is best with 4-6 people.

Sadly it doesn't have much replay value, which is a real shame because I really enjoyed it. Mostly because I was kinda drunk.

Apparently I must have constructed some mental blocks to protect myself or something, but as you were reviewing this I remembered that I had, indeed, played this once when I was younger. Only once, of course, but it was with a bunch of other teenagers, and I remember laughing quite a bit. I also remember all of us making fun of the way the Gate Keeper pronounced the 'Blagole', too. I wonder if it was the game itself that made me block it from my memory, or if something else traumatic happened to me that night that I've blotted out...

Sigh. Why make a board game based on a gimmick like this? Surely someone must have realized the game has no replay value.

The funny thing is, if you transplanted this concept into today, it would work a lot better. A console board game would be weird, but at least the gatekeeper could be halfway randomized and there could be some atmosphere. Hell, maybe you could figure out some weird way to get a DVD or Blu-Ray to have an interactive, randomly generated game master.

But a VHS tape? I mean, really? One that relies on jump scares and general assholery, and plays out the same EVERY TIME, with no skipping? And you give every card a time on the tape so the game ALWAYS PLAYS OUT THE SAME WAY, with very little randomization?

Aaaagh. I'm going over to Spoony's Battlestar Galactica vlog. That game was fun just to watch!
