Two really good, well one awesome and the other is HILARIOUS, J-Horrors Are Kairo (the Japanese Pulse) and the Happieness of the Katakuras

Kairo is pantsshittinly scary, or atleast I think so. I am not one to cover my eyes during a movie, but not only did I cover them I also shouted at the TV toward the end. I MST3K movies alot and this one made me shut up and watch, kind of boring but amazingly scary if thats what your into.

The Happieness of teh Katakuras though, is a J-horror musical with claymation scenes in it, about a family owned inn where people keep dying. One of the opening lines is a woman screaming “Oh god my uvula” It was at that line I was hooked. Its wierd and the claymation is CREEPY, but its good, clean, campy fun.

Zack Dolan October 19, 2009 at 11:47 pm

wow, now that i finally finished all three of these, i had to say, you constantly surprise me. i can’t believe there is another human being (apparently several judging by the comments) that has heard of manOwar and actually doesn’t hate it. I LOVE that overdramatic balls ass silly but with a deadly straight face fantasy hardcore metal shit. it’s just so…so…METAL. and you’re absolutely right about the album covers being rediculously gay. they are like the village people if they got sucked into a conan like fanstasy world like john candy as din in that heavy metal cartoon from the 80s. yeah, they are definately better heard, but not seen, hahaha

also, you said you liked brubaker and that he was very adept at pulling series up by the collar out of the shitter. well i would reccomend to you “the Marvels project”. despite the name, it has nothing to do with alex ross’ “marvels” though it does have a similar setting and theme, but other than that, completely different animal. it’s one of the only things from mainstream marvel that has caught my attention in a while. and that’s in no small measure to having no goddamn marvel zombies (god it was cute once…GO AWAY) or those damn dark avengers, most of all, wolverine’s utterly insufferable kid Daiken (also…GO THE HELL AWAY YOU EMO damn you know it’s bad when i’m like “hey X-23…you can stick around sweetie…you’re not so bad…you’re so much cooler than dark wolverine”) anyway, it’s a very interesting little piece discussing the birth of the marvel universe and i think it’s one of the best things they’ve done in a while. and they stomp nazis…who doesn’t love that?

oh and you’re right about saw. not only is just “what the hell? i saw the others” sending people to the theatre (thank god i had the strength to not give a rats ass about the first one, so i never got sucked in and saw any of the other travesties) it’s almost true of the filmmakers themselves. they actually admitted, they’ve come far enough now, that their goal is to make as many as, then surpass both friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street as franchises by sheer volume alone, and they don’t care what they have to do or how shitty it has to be to get there….that’s just sad

and about the clone wars…oy…i mean…jeez. just one more nail in the coffin i guess. how much more blood does lucas expect to squeeze from that particular stone anymore? i mean i know the expanded universe got kind of out of control before, but i swear…these damn prequels… the gap between episodes 2 and 4 just keeps getting wider and wider. Lucas is obsessed with telling stories that take place BETWEEN other stories he wrote. and none of them matter. that’s sort of the problem with the whole prequel phenomenon. every single character is not interesting because A) we already know what becomes of them in ep. 4 and beyond and this is all basically filler, as it never adds any depth to the character, just different outfits to make alternate action figures and B) new characters that we don’t care what happens to them because either they have to die before the opening credits of ep. 4 or just fade away into obscurity and never do anything of any importance in the great galactic war. cough cough JEDI COUNCIL cough. I mean seriously, how many goddamn apprentices does anakin have? and how many of them just…wander off somewhere never to be heard from again? I’m telling you, that orange bitch otsuka (or atsuka…or atsooka, i don’t fuckin know, lucas names these characters with yahtzee dice anyway) better bite it before that clone wars show ends cause we know damn well she doesn’t do ONE DAMN IMPORTANT THING for the next oh…40 or so years so the only thing she can do of any consequence is…die. he writes himself into corners upon corners. it’s rediculous

all the prequels (and by proxy the series and games) do is cheapen what we liked about the originals. no matter how much fun stuff obi wan (arguably the ONLY worthwhile character in the prequels) does, we know he bows out in a second act mentor requisite death in ep. 4 not really accomplishing all that much (oh after hiding like a pussy for decades). they’ve completely RUINED darth vader, arguably one of the greatest villains of all time, and made you only see a whiny self important emo douchemonkey with a sick fetish for reverse pedophilia (thanks a load george) and generally cheapened or outright destroyed everything that shone so brightly in the first trilogy. i didn;t think it was possible, but he has shit up his new stuff so bad, that i actually cant look at the original stuff the same way, i see all the flaws i do in the new ones, just in a less developed state. i see the seeds he planted that grew into the disgusting thorny fungus covered tree that is emo anakin…

and NOW he wants indiana jones…oh like hell you fat kermit sounding midget loving bizarro carebear…oh it’s ON!!!

I’m sorry…what was i saying?

anyway, good to see you back in business spoony. great reviews as always…now go find some shitty movies to go all METAL on and “KILL WITH POWER!!!!”

Abaris October 20, 2009 at 12:50 am

it seems noah really likes his joke/novelty metal bands.

Drake Bauer October 20, 2009 at 3:01 am

Hey there Spoony

You wanted to know if there was any real Saw fan? I can say that i am one of them. The funny thing is, I only discovered the Saw Franchise about 1-2 years ago, by accident. What keeps my interest in this series is to see how well planned Jigsaw’s plans are and see what else he could have seen that we didn’t ?

The Saw Series or TSS as i like to call them (No i don’t) brings out a powerful message. Cherish your life. It is true that not all people cherish their lives enough in the real world and this story could easily happen in real life (Hopefully not). But …. with saw 7-8-9 already announced, and the next one being in 3-d … i keep telling myself, how far can they go with this story until we go in space lol.

Oh and you should look out for Borderlands, a PC Xbox and PS3 game that is coming out today. A FPS – RPG game that looks promising. Look it up, the reviews give it a good 8/10 score and here in canada, the game is 40$ instead of the usual 70$ for it’s launch date (Future Shop / wallmart)

Take care !

godofplague October 20, 2009 at 3:50 am

I hated episode 1 only for the fact that the little kid essentially saved the day on freakin accident. He can’t tie his shoes but can fly an effin star fighter and hit on Natalie Portman?

Episode 2 was not too bad and all around fun

Episode 3 was really well done if not depressing.

The clone wars movie was fun but not complex, the CGI series that followed it started well and has gotten progressively better and better.

If they make a new KOTOR I might play it crippled hands be damned

Drake Bauer October 20, 2009 at 4:14 am

@ godofplague

Aren’t they working on a KOTOR MMO RPG ?

Justin Duarte October 20, 2009 at 6:28 am

Manowar, hell yeah!!!

Neftali Cano October 20, 2009 at 6:29 am

Spoony I’d like to hear your full impressions of Uncharted 2 after you’ve beaten the whole game and tried the multiplayer and co-op. Probably got a lot of work on your hands, but I think you’ll like the game enough to cover it a second time as a whole. Uncharted 2 doesn’t make the original obsolete, but it does improve upon it in every aspect offering even more ridiculously awesome scripted sequences and amazing graphics to accompany linear yet polished platforming and puzzle segments. The sequel’s superiority is made more apparent as you progress through the next couple chapters, ending in the most epic train level of any videogame (yes, it even beats Final Fantasy VIII’s Zombie President) And after that you still have a good 4-5 hours left in the game which I won’t elaborate upon for spoilers sake.

Taminaattori October 20, 2009 at 6:39 am

I just accuired my copy of Double Brutal. I can’t stop listening to it because it kicks so much ass it has to wipe it’s boots with toilet paper.

Taminaattori October 20, 2009 at 6:40 am

…and yes. I am illiterate!

David October 20, 2009 at 7:57 am

Other bands play, Manowar kills.

Brad October 20, 2009 at 8:26 am

I nominated “The Spoony Bard” instead of “The Spoony One” by accident lol. Hopefully they’ll know what I mean

Not only has Spoony seen The Rise of Leslie Vernon,he did a text review of it a while back.

Hobolegs October 20, 2009 at 9:58 am

It’s great to know I’m not the only one who thought that there will be Saw in Space, or in my case “Saw 12: Saws in SPACE!”

Emily J October 20, 2009 at 10:08 am

MK October 20, 2009 at 11:02 am

Dear Mr Spoony,

I would like to thank you for letting me know about Austrian Death Machine. It is the most awesome thing I have ever heard. For that, I wish you a long, healthy, and joyful life.

Taranaich October 20, 2009 at 11:35 am

Even though I’m adoring Brutal Legend, I can’t say I disagree entirely with your analysis.

I basically bought BL for two reasons: Tim Schafer and metal. I’m one of those guys who is willing to forgive a game’s faults if it has a good story and a nice world to explore, and BL, like Psychonauts before it, has that in spades. Aces of Spades. *crowd throws tomatoes at horrid pun* I wasn’t really hoping for a particularly involved combat engine or whatever, but it works fairly well (though I can’t understand why Eddie can’t jump: Raz could jump!) The main story was also far too short, which is an unfortunate trend many games have nowadays. There was also too little customisation for the Deuce, the axe, the guitar and such considering the scope of what was possible.

However, I just loved the character designs: Eddie, Kill Master, Doviculus, Ophelia, Lionwhyte (having him voiced by Halford and depicted with glam-metal hair so lush he uses it to FLY was the icing on the cake), down to the basic units like the Ironheades and Bouncers (“I’m helping!”), I felt very attached to them. Though I don’t think the story was quite as sublime as Psychonauts or Full Throttle, it was involving and enthralling in its own right. The design of the landscape with metal paraphernalia and metal-inspired wildlife was also just fantastic to explore while listening to Sabbath/Priest/Brocas Helm/ManOwar blaring from the radio.

Overall, I wasn’t disappointed, but I could see a LOT of room for improvement: more variety in side missions, more customization options, a couple new songs (no Grave Digger, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Jag Panzer, Sabaton OR Manilla Road makes me sad, and no Iron Maiden or Metallica makes me WTF?), more in-depth action portion like including bloody jumps, and a longer story. Maybe we’ll get Brutal Legend 2: it’d be awesome getting a sequel, maybe seeing how the land changed after Eddie, or perhaps go back thousands of years earlier just after the world was formed.

And speaking of Manowar, I’m very glad you like them. I know an awful lot of particularly stuck-up, pretentious metal listeners who consider Manowar a blight on the face of metal by perpetuating stereotypes and being a form of ridicule. I can see their point of view, but they can get terribly precious about their chosen genre, and given the choice I’d side with Manowar over those pretentious prats. Although I’m not what you’d call a “Manowarrior”, I do think the band is very talented, and their early stuff is exceptional (everything up to “Sign of the Hammer” and maybe “Kings of Metal”, after that is kind of just variations on a theme). Even so, they are worthy of respect, since for all the accusations of cheese and ironic comedy that can be gained, these guys really believe in the lifestyle and music, and are utterly sincere in their love for it all. It’s hard not to respect them for that honesty.

And Star Wars. Truth be told, I never got into Star Wars until I finally saw the re-releases in 1997 (don’t kill me!), but after that I finally got what the fuss was about. Then I bought Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II and I was utterly obsessed with Star Wars based games for a while. It’s infuriating that we’re stuck with these useless Clone-era games when there’s still not been a game actually based on the original movies. What’s up with that?

BrUS October 20, 2009 at 11:47 am

Brütal Legend was kind of expected different by each person. I wanted a more Banjo-Kazooie mix between platforming and easy-weezy combat. Platforming is the thing that I miss the most. I liked much about BL, though, however, it was SO short. The climax was not a climax AT ALL. I thought we’d just come to half of the story when it suddenly ended. Bitter-sweet IMO. Liked the main twist in the game, though, AND the humor of course.

Uncharted 2, as we all know, is SO good. I can’t stop playing it. The multiplayer is really addictive when playing with friends. There is so much that has been done right in this game.

mike October 20, 2009 at 11:47 am

Have you heard of ArnoCorps? They’re another Arnold Schwarzenegger metal band if you can believe it, and apparently they were the originals

The Nameless One October 20, 2009 at 11:54 am

Spoony likes Manowar, who would have thought?

Hail and kill, brother.

BrUS October 20, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Btw, something I really didn’t like about BL was that each time you went away from the car so that the radio stopped playing music, or something else ended it, you would start from the beginning on that (or another) song. It would been awesome to be able to continue listening from where you stopped.

Juan October 20, 2009 at 12:58 pm

@Scott ‘Zeus’ Christian
don’t make me laugh, the story was that of a shallow love interest that spawned out of nothing in such an eviorment, the book and manga are superior, the acting is awful, is even wors than you avergae japanese bad acting because is japanese Teenagers bad acting, just imagine that, the things are rushed, all the characters are bland, and the director or writer seems to have a position of pro-terrorism, more notable in the sequel, not anti Bush or pro Irak, no it practicaly says people that blow up building with civilians inside are the good guys. The characters of Mitsuko and Kiriyama are deprived of any kind of past, they are acting all sadistic because…….. someone has to do so I guess, they don’t even succumb slowly or anything, they just are.

LaughingMan October 20, 2009 at 1:22 pm

I have been sitting on the fence over Brutal Legends for a while now, and thank God you told me about the RTS elements. Brutal Legends is now officially a rent title for me, even though the demo was pretty bitchin’.

Uncharted 2 – You NEED to do a full review on Uncharted 2. I’m about half-way through the game as well, and it is already friggin’ fantastic. Give the Multi-player mode a go, it’s pretty sweet though nothing utterly revolutionary like the Single Player mode.

Rob October 20, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Spoony, you’ve probably already heard of this, and may not even read this, but there’s a new D&D thing that’s coming out:

http://vimeo.com/7132858?hd=1

roemer October 20, 2009 at 1:45 pm

i can’t stop playing multiplayer uncharted 2 you need to get one with a few friends who know what they are doing and run some people over in rank matches.

Metalsnakezero October 20, 2009 at 2:14 pm

I would agree that the gameplay in Brutal Legend isn’t so good but the RTS stuff is pretty simple and easy to play with and the references to Heavy Metal makes it a good rent to anyone who likes that type of music.

Uncharted 2 is by far one of the best games I played in my life. The look of the game, the great controls, the actions and acting just fit so well.

Todd October 20, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I don’t really listen to metal anymore, but if you wanna hear the most METAL band, check out Japan’s Terror Squad, in particular their album The Wild Stream of Eternal Sin. The most metal thing I’d ever heard before I dropped that whole metal thing.

E.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0B3Xp81Sj8

eadwin October 20, 2009 at 2:26 pm

You’re the first person I know who has seen Noroi. Such an overlooked flick.

arglactable October 20, 2009 at 4:56 pm

I want to know why they never capitalized on the awesomeness of Darth Maul. I mean SERIOUSLY, he was one of the only good things about the prequels (except maybe the priceless shot right before Anakin decides to go ape-shit on the young ones). They could have called it “Darth Maul: Killing Shit” for all I care, as long as they did it with style (the gameplay, I mean). At least when they made Battlefront 2 they were intelligent enough to use Maul (in all his badass glory).

Grimm October 20, 2009 at 7:59 pm

i feel the protomen’s 2nd album ACTII: father of death is something awesome that has been overlooked recently. i mean a dark rock opera based on the megaman series what more awesome than that???

Anyone00 October 20, 2009 at 8:02 pm

I never really understood why Nintendo never had or used the realization ‘Hey, this thing has all the functions of a mouse and then some we can carve out a niche with potential quality console RTSs’; it would still be lacking the full functionality of the keyboard but the control scheme could come pretty close (and maybe through in a few extra Wii touches). As for the PS3 and 360: Sony and Microsoft could have easily release and official mouse and keyboard (wireless with some sort of mouse pad meant to sit on the arm of a chair or couch) for the respective systems and just allow developers the option of using those for controls.

Nathan Russell October 20, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Hey Noah speaking of mockumentary style movies you should check out The Last Broadcast. It has a great style, i would not say its a scary movie but there is a lot of suspense and build-up it probably has the worst ending of any movie in its genera that totally ruins the entire film in my opinion but it still gives an interesting style and is worth taking a look at

Sniktbub October 20, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Wait…you can shove your lightsaber into a droideka and ride it around? What the flying fuck? That would cut the thing in two as it rolled along the ground…that doesn’t make one shred of sense. What a stupid game.

As for all this clone shit…well, the FIRST Clone Wars series that was on Cartoon Network a few years ago (you know, the cartoon animated by Genndy Tartakovsky) was really good. But damn, the way they keep dragging this shit out, it’s starting to get a little boring. Still, I can’t help but love Clone Troopers to death, I have a huge obsession with collecting figures of them.

Nevrmore October 20, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Hey, I’m sure its been mentioned already but I don’t feel like sifting through 200 comments, but the computer y wasn’t cheating at the end of Brutal Legend. If you play the multiplayer and play as the main antagonist’s faction, you’ll see that his faction has the ability to summon units from anywhere on the battlefield. He can only create three different unit types – Battlenun, Warfather and Overblesser – from the stage, after that he has to find an available Battlenun, Warfather or Overblesser and use them to summon his troops. Wherever they are currently standing will be where the troops are summoned to.

HBMC October 20, 2009 at 10:22 pm

There have been two Clone Wars series’ Spoony.

1. The actual cartoon Samurai Jack-style one, which had two Seasons. That was awesome.
2. The 3D animated one, which is now in its second Season. It’s also awesome, but with some caveats.

The Clone Wars movie was actually the first three episodes of the first Season and it was a disjointed mess. The first third made no sense. The second third dragged (though the vertical battle was awesome) and the last third was pretty good. The series itself has been getting better and better each week (for the most part – they still insist on Jar Jar being in the odd episode) but the show’s main problem is that it is schizophrenic – it can’t work out if its a kids show or a show for adults.

In one episode they’ll have Jar Jar befriending a huge underwater caterpillar and then a few episodes later have a Bounty Hunter execute an unarmed senator in cold blood only moments after snapping a senate guard’s neck in screen. Hell, in the episode before the last one they tortured a Jedi to death, on screen, not cutting away – just electrocuted him until he died from it. Some weeks you have General Grievous running away almost saying ‘I’ll get you next time Anakin – Next time!’ ala Dr. Claw, and then at the end of last season half the episode was dedicated to Asoka’s grief over seeing her entire fighter squadron killed before her eyes. I mean WTF? This shit will mess up some kids as much as Optimus dying in the Transformers movie did!

And this is annoying as it means you get a few episodes of awesome, and then a two or three parter filled with stuff you might see on kiddy Saturday morning cartoons. The show cannot make up its mind about what it is.

Later this season we’re getting the Mandalorians entering the story, which sounds cool, but then it’ll be one of two things – them being defeated at the last moment and a good happy ending for the kiddies, or them actually cracking some skulls and killing some Jedi in a more brutal fashion, putting the kiddies into therapy.

Love your videos.

Lar Robideau October 21, 2009 at 1:38 am

I don’t like Saw, but I own them, I watch them, I Wiki them, I will see 6, and 7, and 8.

I put in too much time not to have this evolve.

And no matter the movie, Cary Elwes is win.

Lar Robideau October 21, 2009 at 1:39 am

Wow, I must be tired, I meant to type RESOLVE.

Raditzdm October 21, 2009 at 3:18 am

It may be a bit sadistic of me but about 3/4 of the way through noroi, when the psychic chick was groaning in the back seat of the car right when mr. tin foil hat and the narrator were discovering the shrine, I noticed while she was groaning that she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt. At that point, after the cameraman asked 15 times if she was ok, I had this thought in my head that maybe, just maybe, he should just hit the brakes moderately hard so I could see her head bounce off of the passenger side headrest. I was dying of laughter at that thought for the rest of the damn movie with the help of mr crackhead scratching himself.

Death October 21, 2009 at 4:33 am

I don’t get why austrian death machine is thought good. I listened to them they play guitar riffs pretty similiar and its pretty mediocre. I will admit the novelty value is hilarious.

mike October 21, 2009 at 6:14 am

Battle Royale may be overhyped, but it’s certainly not as bad as Juan makes it out to be. I’d check it out.
The sequel is terrible though.

mixmastermind October 21, 2009 at 6:39 am

I simply could not beat Brutal Legend. Not because it was difficult, but because the section where you trap the Metal Beasts is fucking impossible to do.

DrFreemanstein October 21, 2009 at 8:24 am

For more Paranormal Activity/Blair Witch Project similarity, check out “The Last Broadcast”…it has the best ending!

Fu manchu October 21, 2009 at 8:30 am

ADM friggin’ rulez! As always great show, Spoony :)

BUT!…no offense, it would please the eye more, if you tinkered a bit with the camera’s white balance. Don’t tell me you’ve got beige walls. :P

GasmaskAvenger October 21, 2009 at 9:10 am

On the topic of topic of Austrian Death Machine, you ever listened to Arnocorps?

Similar execution & concept, but even funnier. Highly recommended

Mr. Zer0 October 21, 2009 at 10:28 am

Brutal Legend was too short, yea. I was expecting there would at least be a march back to Bladehenge to topple whatever demonic monolith would be constructed over the remains of the Halford settlement instead of just recycling the Sea of Black Tears level again

diggerjohn111 October 21, 2009 at 11:45 am

Spoony is right on the mark again, the new Austrian Death Machine completely rocks! Thanks dude! I am currently in the process of cleaning the other post-docs out of my office with it…..muh wa ha ha ha ha!

Mikeymike October 21, 2009 at 2:25 pm

I have been saying for the longest time that Saw in Space was coming! It’s going to happen!

Apathetic One October 21, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Hey Spoony, I just watched ‘Paranormal Activity’ online and was wondering what you and your brother meant by the movie ‘winks’ at the audience at the end? I was kind of waiting to see if I could spot it but wasn’t able to notice anything that seemed as a ‘wink’ to the audience. Besides that I really enjoyed it, even on a 15” laptop it was creepy….

Quadraxis14 October 21, 2009 at 3:24 pm

It’s funny about your shirt, I actually just saw MST3K’s Escape 2000 episode. Probably my favorite one in a good while. Sorry bout the off-topic comment, just liked that reference I saw
