The Spoony Experiment

TSE Forum Club’s Roast of Noah Antwiler!

by Spoony on November 15, 2009 · View Comments

It’s been nearly 3 years since The Spoony Experiment began. From Knights of the Dinner Table movie reviews onto YouTube with NES and eventually Final Fantasy VIII and FMV Hell. Noah has managed to be one of the most entertaining and enthralling personalities out there.

Video and Table Top games, movies, music, comics. Science fiction, horror, fantasy, crime, drama. Noah has an expansive and incredibly diverse repertoire, and has shown in both the forum and his videos that he’s always willing to learn and grow. It’s been a great three years for me, longer for some, and we look forward to much, much more.

We welcome you all to create or write your own Spoony Tributes or ribbings, because let’s face it. We’re a community of smart asses, and it’s only best if we all get involved to celebrate three years of excellent snarkery!

Pretty funny all around. Even Necro wasn't too bad though I'm certainly not impressed enough to watch his stuff. Esspecailly since some of the jokes he mentioned were bad intentionally.

Plus you have to smoke some hard crack to think FF9 was worse then FF8. FF9 actautlly had merits and likible characters.

Congrats spoony, you're really one of my favorite online people i've ever followed. you never get stale no matter how many times i've watched your videos and you give me hope in humanity with your reviews on movies haha.

here's to many more years of laughs and entertainment :D
  • Halo-

You keep saying that it was a bad attempt as if it is a matter of a fact. This makes you a moron because there are people who do like it as we have already pointed out. And for you telling them to not try again? Why not? Ooh thats right, because your opinion about everything is perfect and spot on.

In all seriousness, you have nothing to complain about. You didn't pay to see the video, you could have turned it off at any time (which I am almost sure you did if you didn't like it.) So whats your point again? You don't see me trolling on people I don't like so I am just surprised that everyone here feels the need to troll on the people in these videos.
  • Biscuit
All humanity has lost credibility in these comments. I'm extremely shocked that any of you even have internet. Honestly, you don't even deserve it. I also call the people who made the video's, friends. I think they did an awesome job, and Spoony OBVIOUSLY thinks they did an awesome job or he wouldn't have featured any of it. And what matters is that HE enjoyed them. It's a good thing he's not an asshole like the people in these comments are. (of course excluding those that did enjoy the video's). I'm just beside myself that so many assholes could exist in one spot.

Also, to those bitching about how a roast SHOULD go, with the Roastee being in the video's. I was told that this was a surprise, and Spoony didn't know anything about it.

You guys are terrible, terrible wastes of human air.
    *shakes head*

    Mega-

I don't think people realize how whiny and ridiculous people sound when they bash things so severely. And to be honest, this was posted on the forums, initially, not here on the home page. Which means Spoony put it here. If he didn't like it/appreciate it, reguardless of quality, it wouldn't be here. And thats all that matters, everyone else who wants to indirectly judge Spoonys fans, and HIS judgement for putting it up here, don't actually matter, and are obviously not apart of the TSE community like the forums, which are much more tight knit and enjoyable.

The video wasn't outstanding by any means, but it is enjoyable to see people show appreciation for such a great guy.
  • HaloOfTheSun
I never said I speak for everyone. Obviously there are some people that like it. Your desperate attempt at putting a different meaning on to my post is childish.

It's also childish to assume that when you put something out in public that you created, whether it be a video, a piece of music, a drawing, etc. that no one will tell you what they honestly think. And it's honestly a lame attempt at comedy. It's an opinion, people have them, grow up.

Perhaps you're the one that needs to move on, considering it appears this is making you so angry.
  • @Halo

Except some people to enjoy the videos so really you lack any real point. You try to say that you and the other people recognize stuff that isn't funny but your ability to speak for all was broke just a little while ago by Danny who thought it was great. I don't care if you like it or don't however. The main thing I don't agree with on the bashings is just that, the bashings. If you don't like it you can say you didn't like it sure, but when you start attacking the people in the videos and their efforts THAT is the point where the problems start with me. Sucks you didn't like it though; quit bitching and move on.
  • Danny D.
    This was great!
  • HaloOfTheSun
    @DaMegaFish

Actually what you're suggesting (about the people who found the videos... let's say, less than good... not having the courage to make their own) kind of works against you. I'm sure most of us are well aware that we could not make an entertaining video, which is why we don't. That doesn't mean we can't recognize something that isn't funny when we see it.

Kudos to all of you for trying. Don't try again.
  • Galvajon
Helldragon! What a twist! Now if only NTom64 could join in...
  • Keroshino
hey spoony...i am Still waiting for that next "SWAT 4" video..anytime now!!!
  • @ diplomat - Hrm, well it's not supposed to be a mind trip. Perhaps you should watch it again upon sobriety. Although that ET video Spoony did was rather trippy.
  • Dear Angry Internet People,

If you don't like the videos there is no need to bash all the people who worked hard on them and put them out here for your FREE enjoyment. If you know so much about comedy and making videos then please, quit bitching and make your own videos. I am guessing most of you don't even have the courage to make a video with yourself featured in it like these people (who I am proud to call my friends) in the two videos did.
  • Yes, I'm well aware of the fact that most of the jokes on the list were intentionally bad. THAT WAS THE FREAKING POINT!!!
  • Violent Diplomat
Am I the only one who thinks that the 'roast' was one gigantic mindfuck? I tried to watch the video, but I really didn't know what the hell was going on. It's just a plethora of random video clips from Spoony, with some people who are apparently roasting him, maybe it's because I'm hungover, but I didn't know what the fuck was going on!

Also, I don't think the Necro Critic is that bad, that Irate Gamer joke was funny. However his top ten......not so much. Especially considering the fact that I thought that all of Spoony's 'worst jokes' were actually funny. The ones that were 'bad' were KNOWINGLY bad. That's what made the joke ten times more awesome.

And I really hate the way the Necro Critic looks, what the hell is that? Is that some sort of gimmick? He looks like some sort of blind chick that works at the library or something.

    It's just bothersome.
  • ChibiGingi
Also, the Space Mountain joke. Uh... Rick Flair, anyone? He even does the WOOOOO part. Or Rick Flair took that from something else... but I always knew what Space Mountain was. But yeah, that's still a pretty bad joke. But once again, it's why I like him.
  • Oldman
i literally feel the opposite about every single one of the necro critics points on his list
he shall not besmirch the name of spoony
the hells kitchen review i nearly gave my self a hernia from laughing so hard lol
  • Walt Conway
I don't see the problem with the Space Mountain joke. It's supposed to make you feel uncomfortable and seem out of place because it is.

I'm always willing to give new and upcoming critic's the benefit of the doubt and more than usually, they'll get better. However, Necro has not done all that much to improve any of the problems on his show. His voice is like nails on a chalkboard and his jokes are pretty awful. This list is a complete joke. Some of Spoony's best material. "Shittier than a Mormon prom" made me laugh hysterically.
  • Rasmus Wichmann
Been with ya since "Knights", Spoony, and left the mag when you left! Will also leave the internet if you should go down! Glory to the experiment! Let the snarkness consume us all!
  • ChibiGingi
    Happy Anniversary, Spoony!

I didn't watch the Roast yet, but yeah, without a rebuttal, I have a feeling it's not going to be merely as enjoyable as other Roasts I've seen. Sorry, but that's kind of the point of a roast, y'know?

Also, NecroCritic is really, really monotone and boring. Given his name (before now I never even heard of him), I have a feeling the deadpan nature is suppose to be his act. If so, then I'll know not to watch any of his reviews. But if not, seriously, the guy sounds like he could lighten up. Smoke a bold, relax, get laid. You think the Sopranos joke is old in the Dirty Harry review, Necro? The deadpan monotone gag was funny when BEN STEIN did it.

Though, despite how obviously bored and unrivoting NecroCritic is, he... does raise a few points. But it's that humor that draws me onto Spoony ANYWAY. Keep it up, Spoony! Let's give them another 3 years!
  • Allison
I didn't half-mind the roast, but the Necro Critic scared me. His "humor" was stale and he just seemed to be nitpicking.
  • Hey guys have you noticed people on the internet can't read!?!?!
    ( had to I'm sorry)
Great work guys. Thanks but I rather not have to look a DarkChiron ever again IN MY LIFE please k thx!

    Congratulations on the 3 years!
  • *And before I get called out for not understanding what a roast is, I simply can't find any other good word to describe what I mean instead of 'bashing' (due to dictionary and brain fail). I understood that a roast is not really about honestly bashing someone, but more what HaloOf The Sun described.
  • First of all, happy anniversary!

I will admit that I'm from Germany and hadn't hear of roasts before I watched that one "The Office" episode, but it looked fun there. So I'm probably not the best person to tell anyone if this was good. But I had to turn off the video in the middle of PushingUpRoses' (?, the one with the drawings) part, simply because I didn't like anyone but the first guy and the one doing the transitions; I was just feeling embarrassed for everybody else. The timing of the jokes was pretty off and often because of that, it was neither funny on a 'bashing' level nor on any other. And you were pretty tame, too, at least the first ones that I could get through. (Then again, I wouldn't know how to bash the Spoonster properly, either.)

But I guess humor is subjective, and it's the thought that counts. So good work.
  • HaloOfTheSun
    Or entertaining.
  • HaloOfTheSun
What's not to get? It's a roast - it's making fun of the roastee but ultimately out of appreciation of what they do and have done in a humorous way that is entertaining and oftentimes borderline distasteful.

    This wasn't funny.
  • Yeah, whether you liked it or not aside, I just hope everyone gets the point of what a roast is. Some of you do get it, and you are right that the roastee gets to zing everyone at the end, which I really hope Spoony follows through with.
  • @ Biscuit-

Yeah, people definitely missed the point. However this is the internet, and haters are bound to surface. The important thing is that Spoony realizes that this was done out of appreciation, and no one can touch that no matter how wretched we may or may not have been. And I think he does appreciate it, so it's all good.
  • LeMan
The roast was unfunny Roasts are generally unfunny.

The Necro Critic - oh my.
If I would have to make a list of the top 10 unfunniest moments ever to be featured at the Spoony Experiment, it would consist solely of clips from his video.
First, he looks like a colorblind hippie. His acting is, well, how do I describe this?
This will do it: Watch "Top 11 Anime Villains" from ThatDudeInTheSuede

    http://www.thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks...

The "Necro Critic"-concept is this performance done a lot less entertaining. I don't even have to compare them - just watch the video.

    As for the joke:
I agree, the "Mormon Prom"-one was bad.
But the "Super Wing Commander"-one as an honorable mention? I don't even think that one was a joke, that was just being condescending towards the game.
Also, why is everyone bashing the Spoony-Bum? It's not the greatest joke I have ever seen in my like (OHMYGOD) but what's there to hate about him? Can someone explain? Is the Necro Critic (Nostalgia Critic, Necro Critic, can anyone else see a pattern here?) just bashing on it because many people seem to do, even after Spoony himself did it, even using the clip from Spoony where he bashed the idea himself, shortly after he did it? You know, jumping on the bandwagon =/= funny.

The blackout a Sopranos-parody??? That's the way the first level ends how can you not get that? How about some thinking before you put in on a Bottom 10 list? To quote the Nostalgia Critic: "Use your thoughts writers, use your thoughts."

Space-mountain? Intentionally bad, anyone? Or as #104 points out a possible reference to Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog.

The lation singing bashing FF8? Not award-worthy, but bad? So bad that it had to be put in the video so that the world would learn "This soul-punchingly bad joke instantiates such soul-punching badness it will soulpunch you in the soul"? By the way, "soul" isn't as funny as the Cinema Snob thinks "Yeti" is. Saying it all the time does not guarantee you're funny.

The toys in "Hell's Kitchen"? "Jump" in "Make My Video", the snakes in "Samurai Zombie Nation", the puns in "SWAT 4" and "Final Fantasy"?? "That thing you do"?!? I won't even comment on those. It's so frustrating that it's just not worth it.

But hey, I can accept it that there are pretentious people on the internet who review reviewers (Am I reviewing a review of reviews?). Unfortunately, that's not everything.
No, the Necro Critic actually had the balls to STEAL FROM THE NOSTALGIA CRITIC'S REVIEW OF "NORTH"!!!

Did that guy seriously think no one would notice that the joke is copied 1:1 from Doug?
That was even more painful as "The defense rests." Seriously, right now that totally cracks me up after having watched the Necro Critic. He makes "North" look funny. At least "North" has "so bad it's good"-moments not many however) and it will give you flashbacks to Doug's review (to borrow from Spoony, it's like watching Manos without the MST3K commentary, you can still imagine it's there).

So please watch "North" and as an epic climax of suck WATCH YOUR OWN VIDEOS when you want to see some bad jokes. The only positive thing I got from this review was that it reminded me to randomly yell "PHANTASMAGORIA!!" in public.

Oh, and of course happy "birthday" Spoony.
  • K.J.
    Pretty unbearable stuff.

Reaffirms why Spoony is the one with the popular website and anyone caring what he has to say and not any of these people.
