wow…I’ve heards me a lot of legends about the epic difficulty of bayou billy…but jason seemed to crush it like a paper cup…i gotta admit the man is like some sort of 8-bit horseman of the apocalypse…no game can stand against him.

I think spoony shouldn’t be ashamed of the hard time he had with this. I wouldn’t be. i recently started following jason under the lordkat banner on TGWTG and all the games he reviews that i’ve played beat me more ferociously than bruce lee did all those bafoons in the baggy tan pants in enter the dragon…i think regular folks or even above average gamers burst more than one blood vessel over these things. it’s not the games are that easy and we are just stupid, they are as hard as the legends say, it’s just he is a badass with that old 2 button controller.

So why re-submit this again? Is it because UWW is now on Thatguywiththeglasses? :) I beat the game a few times, and like old school games of the time it took practice. I still say your just trying to be funny, which works, but it doesn’t mean it’s a bad game.

I loved this video, it was well presented and it showed a lot of awesome little tips for Bayou Billy, a game which I will probably never play, but there’s nothing wrong with semi-useless knowledge. All in all, it was entertaining.

I will say this, this dude has some mad classic game chops. He beat both Battletoads and Silver Surfer. Two of the hardest games I’ve ever played. I’ve gotten to like the 6th stage of Battletoads before, but that was emulator assisted. It’s a ball buster of a game.

Hey, I like a little UWW. It’s not necessarily something you watch for laughs, it’s just nice and informative. (Although it has it’s moments of course.) And it’s cool to actually see the end of impossible games. I can remember LordKat mentioning Spoony doing this game a long time ago, which is pretty much how I stumbled into Spoony Experiment. So now hopefully some Spoony folk can stumble into UWW.

I’ve always questioned this game’s impossibility. I beat this back when I was a kid.

What is there to hate about UWW? It’s all about taking the various games most gamers have written off as “impossible” and proving to us that they are indeed beatable, without cheats or savestates (that “no emulator savestates” rule may be one of the ballsiest ever), and giving us tips on HOW to beat the impossible games. It’s usually funny in quite a few places, though it doesn’t set out trying too hard to be funny.

And I would guess that Spoony put this up as a nice show of respect, because he did say during his Bayou Billy review, “This game is fucking impossible… if anyone out there can beat Bayou Billy fairly, I will give you a fucking medal”. Well, LordKat has done exactly that, since he’s the Gamer On Crack, so it was nice of Spoony to recognize Kat beating his challenge.

While I would agree that this guy’s review was nowhere near as entertaining as Spoony’s, it was quite informative. It also makes me wonder if it would be interesting to see Spoony do something along the lines of what he did in SWAT, play a damned-near-impossible game (Battletoads), and give us a montage of the results.

Then again, he’s got Pumpkinhead and Twilight to get him that pissed. He doesn’t need more aggravation.

That was good, but lets see him take on Bloodwings Pumpkinhead’s revenge (does he even do games that recent? Seems like he only does old console games not PC or newer games).

I commend LordKat for standing on the shoulders of geniuses and still finding his own identity. I enjoy UWW immensely and am quite glad TGWTG has picked him up. Although his show isn’t really “funny” per say, in Jason’s own words that’s not really the point. He tries to make it entertaining yes, but the whole purpose is to show someone how to beat a hard game legit. Being a retro gamer myself he has helped me on a number of games including Castlevania 4 and Earthworm Jim.

I for one welcome our new genetically engineered gamer overlords.

It shouldn’t require reiterating but ‘Until We Win’ isn’t really a shtick played for laughs. Yes, there’s Review-centric content but UWW’s main goal is to tackle games that are historically regarded as difficult and provide some strategies that were gleaned from the experience. This whole subset of pedestrian remarks about how Until We Win isn’t as funny as Spoony seems beyond pointless – it’s pretty obvious that LordKaT’s not really trying to usurp the throne from Spoony or AVGN or Nostalgia Critic.

two different styles, i enjoyed spoony’s review a lot more. UWW has a few mild laughs here and there, but its main goal is to bring back nostalgic feelings of old games and show that the hardest are impossible to beat. LordKaT obviously did because spoony couldn’t and wanted to prove its beatable (still, whats the point of beating a shitty game). I dont understand why spoony posted this vid anyway. I like this guy. Not everyone needs to be a comedian, especially if they’re not as funny as Spoony. LordKat’s videos are entertaining and interesting, and I even get a chuckle once in awhile.

Crinos, LordKat announced on his own website that he does have Pumpkinhead’s Revenge, and is trying to beat it, but he’s finding that to be just as impossible as Spoony is, so while he is trying it, he’s not going to do an UWW video of it, any time soon.

I like the video, but he really needs to deinterlace the video before uploading it to blip.tv.

I watch UWW, but only games I’m interested in, cuz he’s pretty boring. He’s really good at games and what not, but he can be pretty boring. Though it makes it all the nicer when he’s actually funny, like in his Silver Surfer review.

Pretty awesome that he beat the game. I’m personaly appaled he can get the names of the enemies in this game right, but can’t get Megaman’s enemy names correct, but thats just nitpicking.

I love Spoony’s outbursts of rage and anger in ways even more than AVGN because he actually has a reflective side to him and can analyze WHY it’s crap. That’s why I also find his VLogs interesting. Personally though, I want to see UWW: Dragon’s lair.

I have one important tip:

Here’s what proves that I actually beat this game when I was 10 years old, by myself, without a game genie. The trick is to use a ZAPPER on the first shooting stage. When you get to the boss (blue helicopter), you take it out like normal. However, the second that helicopter explodes, you RAPID FIRE in the explosion.

If you don’t let up and you have enough ammunition, you’ll gain +10 lives. It a glitch that resets the boss explosion, racking up TREMENDOUS points! These give you extra lives. However, this only works if you’re using a ZAPPER…

You know, the problem I have with Until we win, is I just can’t believe he is beating these games. I know he SAYS he’s not cheating or using save states, but I just cant believe for an instant that this guy is able to take all these insanely near-impossible games and just beat them all without any assistance and finish each one in about a month (if that). These games should take years of practice to beat.

@Seth: Because Spoony is one of the very few internet personalities who is actually entertaining. I’m sure UWW is great for people that have struggled with these games in the past and need tips or just want to see the later levels or something, but by christ is it dull.

This was how i discoverd The Spoonyone.I was looking up speedruns on youtube and thought about this game and i seen this review.

He is using assistance. If you watch his first review he posted on TGWTG, chakan or whatever its called, he’s clearly getting hit without any health loss.

The two bosses for the 2nd gun fight (WHITE SHIRT COMMANDO & JUMPING KNIFER).

1) Shoot the WHITE COMMANDO first.
2) You’ll have less health leftover for the KNIFER, but you can easily intercept his knives in the air. You won’t get hit anymore (if you catch the knives) and will have no problem finishing him off.

While the tricks take time to master, it is not impossible, or even unlikely that someone who has spent years working on general old school gaming tricks to be able to adapt them to a new game in a month or two. In addition LK states that it takes him 2-3 months to beat a game he’s never played before.

Did you not pay attention that there is a potion in game that you can concoct that makes you temporarily invincible. That would explain that. Also he mentions that you are also momentarily invincible during and a little after a spin jump attack. The only time he mentions using a cheat code was during the Deadly Towers because he lost some of the footage or sound from the game and didn’t really want to go back and record it again.

Merely out of curiosity, what games has LordKaT done on Until We Win that you feel should take years of practice to beat? I mean, not for nothing, but if you’re actively playing only one game for several hours at a time, you’re probably going to discern how the AI works and how best to exploit the AI’s patterns fairly quickly. This isn’t the board game Othello (“A minute to learn, a lifetime to master”) that we’re talking about here.

I’d play the first three levels, up until the Turbo Tunnel. That’s when my patience ran out and frustration kicked in. How I managed to avoid repeatedly smashing my NES controller against the unforgiving wall, I’ll never know.

Damn I would have hated that game…. I have a hard enough time on NecroVisioN, and I use cheats! >.>;

He just use savestates like crazy. I remember he saying that he don’t, but look at the “Silver surfer” review, that game is just impossible without savestate. In almost every stage of game, if you die ONCE you have to restart the entire game, and the game has a lot of trial and error, to beat it, and you have to die like 100~200 times to memorize all the patterns, it would take weeks to finish this game, maybe months.

hes already said that it took him an entire month to beat it, and on chakan he already said he died over 100 times in one level, because the jumps were leaps of faith.

I love UWW. Not only is it a trip into the past, right into the games I used to play religiously on my NES systems, but he does what, for the most part I couldn’t back then, and inspires me to try again now.

When I first bought Bayou Billy I actually had the BALLS to try and do it with the zapper. Besides my POS TV back then making my hit detection near nil, it didn’t help that all those lives I’d lost in the shooting stages were making it impossible to have enough to make it through the areas after.

I love seeing incredibly hard games being beaten, and I watch LordKat, but he isn’t terribly funny and he has a habit of repeating phrases way too often, things like “all you have to do,” “it isn’t too difficult,” “there really isn’t anything I can tell you,” and the like.

Also, Battletoads isn’t too hard if you use two of the warps. Chakan, however, go ahead, use the warp in that game. Won’t help you.

Judging by both Spoony’s and UWW’s review/playthrough of the game I figured that the only people who would play this would be hardcore nerds or kids who don’t know Double Dragon exists (assuming they only have an NES). No offense to anyone but while a game may be challenging, it shouldn’t suffer from those kind of flaws Bayou Billy has. However a plus to BB for having a very nice ending. Both the music and the cut scene was cosy and more elaborate that other games with better gameplay and graphics at the time had.

Wow, I need to watch this when I get home. This has got to be one of the hardest 8-bit games ever made and it’s a shame too because the game mechanics really do show promise it’s just the difficulty and collision detection that’s way off.

Lets not forget that LordKat beat super ghoul’s and ghosts too. I consider that a feat probably tougher than beating the rest of the games on there. Surviving that stupid bracelet run when you play the game a second time was insanely difficult.

He does, but in his defense, A) there just ain’t that many ways to describe video game strategies in online video form, and more importantly, B) by saying “it isn’t too difficult” or “all you’ve gotta do”, he’s trying to imply that these games aren’t the impossible challenges that their reputation might have you believe. By showing the audience how to exploit the AI, all he’s saying is “Look – if I can do this, you can do this. It may not be the easiest thing you ever do, but you can do this.” It’s a nice counter-balance to AVGN or Spoony, where their act is to make whichever game they’re featuring out to be a horrific, unplayable nightmare, to which they comically overreact to.

And Wade, anyone can do anything with enough practice. I never thought I’d finish Ninja Gaiden II (360) on even the Normal difficulty, yet I eventually managed to do it on Very hard difficulty. The more you play the better you get, especially alot of these old games where it’s as simple as learning patterns or finding the cheapest methods possible. Also maybe you just suck, what do I know.

Yeah i think LordKat’s alright. He certainlt makes games that previously seemed impossible possible. He isn’t perfect at what he does and he has some room for improvement.

I never claimed he didn’t do it fairly. I have no reason to believe that he is lieing or a reason to care if he were.

You know this UWW guy was interesting to watch and more informitive then entertaining but the point was to give advice, not get laughs. My advice to him is make the camera focus on him rather than angled 30 degrees on random stuff, but otherwise he’s okay. Seems like his fans have a thing for the f word though and like Spoonys big fans can’t stand reading critcism about their heroes, but nearly all big fans act that way, its not just Spoonys fans that eat up anything he puts out. As for comparing these two UWW has better skills with Bayou Billy but when it comes to being entertaining its like comparing a Ferrari to a Hummer, they’re both made and intend on different things as UWW is for advice while Spoony is for laughs when it comes to games.

i agree with you completely. he even says “i dont have an NES”.. meaning hes using an emulator, and if he were to save all this footage of him playing the game for a month it would be E-Fucking-NORMUS. his series would be so much more believable/better if it had some of his reactions as he was playing (like spoony and AVGN) instead it just cuts to him with a few words about it. im willing to believe he doesnt use cheats cause.. well he has footage of him playing, but no save states?… i dont think so.

Hmmm…I’m undecided as to whether or not I buy all of LordKat’s stuff. I like his reviews, but I think it would be good to show us 1 uninterrupted play-through for one really hard game.

Man, this game…….It was harder than Battletoads, if you were playing it while driving off a rocky cliff while at the same time getting a tattoo! What were they thinking?!

LordKat is great. He isn’t in it mainly for the “laughs”, but I still find him amusing as well as extremely informative.
Kind of like JewWario on TGWTG. The humor is playful at best, but the main focus of his shows are on being informative and helpful.

To all people who complain about LordKat not being funny, well no shit he isn’t funny. He’s not even trying to be. His videos are entertaining in a different way. Entertainment doesn’t necessarily have to be funny in order to be good. There’s all kinds of it out there. Open your minds a bit. Spoony’s great, but so are other entertainers, just in a different way.
