Regardless of the means, they’re making an attempt to stay anonymous and refusing to use their gift – an expensive gift at that – because they didn’t reveal their name isn’t really worth it. I’m not talking about worth as in value here, but more in the sense that you don’t achieve anything by forcing this person to go against their wishes.

As I read in a previous post: Yeah, if they didn’t write their name down they probably wanted to stay anonymous. No idea WHY, but they did.

Like I said before, if it’ll ease your conscience you can make a tribute video to them with the help of the new software. Even if you don’t know who sent it, they know who they are.

Don’t know about this one…but you definitely should not feel guilty about $5 or $10 donations. If people decide that this is the sort of entertainment they want to watch, they’ll do what they can to keep it going. ‘Dollar votes’, so to speak.

Personally speaking, I don’t accept software because I write previews and informal news pieces on all things Mac and iPhone. It _directly_ interferes with my job. I especially don’t accept those kinds of gifts – or any other kind, for that matter – from publishers, developers or “anonymous donors” – usually the publisher’s PR folks.

However, you don’t write reviews on Adobe products (that I know of), so there’s no real conflict of interest that I can see.

Dude! Go knock yourself out and enjoy it. I doubt the donor has any truly nefarious reason to give you a copy besides spreading good word of mouth.

Were it me receiving this supremely awesome and extremely creepy gift, I would wait about two or three weeks, while trying to find out the donator’s (or donators’) name and address (names and adresses), and if nothing came of it, just say “To Hell with it” and start using the shit. That does seem like the sort of thing that would be VERY difficult to do unintentionally or fraudulently. Considering the price tag is above the spending limit of a lot of credit cards, it seems to me that the person who sent probably has either a large credit line or enough saved that they could afford to throw around that much money.

Receiving anonymous gifts through Amazon is always a little unnerving though. There’s not really a proscribed way to react to such things like you could if the person had walked up and given it to you. Is there no information available from Amazon?

Before I get to the point that I want to make, it’s time for me to use this site, to plug my own show, go to you tube and type in mikes movies, and you will see the episodes of the show that I have made to date.

That’s an amazing gift, and it is a little unbelievable to think that someone is willing to spend that much money anonymously, but that’s low self-opinion talking. Spoony, I’ve got the feeling that you’ve really just thought until now that you’re some dude, doing something he enjoys, and keeping some people entertained while doing it. Nothing major, just out for a good time. I think the Open Web Awards, getting to the top FIVE proves it’s more than that, if the constantly increasing web hosting requirements didn’t tip you off already. Yeah while that kind of a gift may seem crazy to the typical person, people who have alot of money can often be very generious. There are a few internet personalities Id donate big bucks to had I a few million dollars, no question. Spoony being one of them. We’ve all received hours apon hours of free entertainment over the years from these guys, and its only fitting that they get something for their hard work, well something more than internet fans they’ll rarely meet and the occasional creepy stalker.

Anyway, only advice i could give , and hey, it might be worth absolutely nothing as an advice but :

Take a few days “off”, dont think about it, and if you really REALLY need to know who it was, there’s probably a way to contact amazon’s customer service or something to not necessarily get private infos on your donator but just send hem a Thanks card via amazon.

That way the donator remains anonymous, and i’m pretty sure such an act woudl be awesome to whoever sent you this.

Spoony, there is an old expression. It’s called “Don’t look a gifthorse in the mouth.” You’re a dude on the internet who reviews things. Some other dude on the internet gave you a tool to better review things. The best thing you can do is to review things with this gift that this other dude gave you. It’s adobe flash, not freaking cocaine. The person who gave you the gift clearly didn’t make a mistake, in that he gave you a gift specifically tied down to what you do.
And as for an issue with identity theft, or a kid stealing his parents credit card….
If that’s true, the credit card services do provide a way to clear any sketchy actions up. But really, the chances of either of those being true are slim to none. Take the gift, and use it to make awesome videos. That’s the best way to honor the person who gave you the gift.

I agree with anyone that’s saying don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, this is an insane opportunity for you to make your already excellent work bigger and better, and I think you should take advantage of it.

Personally, i sailed the seven seas for those programs. (Well, Flash and Soundbooth, the only ones i’d ever use) But i’d seriouslly laugh my ass off if you opened them to find it was just the box. Now that would be a cruel prank for someone to play. But yeah… If it’s genuine store bought… Daaaaaamn. Just wait for 2 months and if no recall is issued until then, it’s all yours. Any fraud/thieving kid/whatever would have been discovered by then.
But more likely it’s simply someone with some money on the side who likes your work. For you n me it’s 2 motnhs of wage but for some other people… it’s simply the question if you are spoiling the with gifts like that. ;-)

As much as I know you’re probably not going to listen to me over the other guys here, I would really keep this.
This is just my warped view on humanity, but we’re awfully weird when it comes to generosity.
I’ve noticed that people, depending on how things are worded, would actually become OFFENDED by this kind of gift, because it can be interpreted as the buyer feeling pity towards you.
If it was me sending something this great (yeah, like I’m ever going to be able to buy this), I’d probably keep it anonymous too, or just have at least a note saying “I absolutely love your work, keep being awesome. Here’s stuff to help ;D”. The lack of a note is kind of odd, but I don’t know how Amazon works, so I’m not going to comment on that.

I’m sticking my oar in rather late here, and obviously I can’t speak for everyone. But if I were in a financial position where I could afford to do something like that, it’s exactly the sort of thing I’d do. I’ve given comparably large gifts or sums to people I don’t know very well before, and I hopefully will again. I can understand if it makes you feel uncomfortable, but don’t feel guilty or undeserving – someone has done this voluntarily, presumably for the sheer hell of doing something generous. Make the most of it, and, optionally, ‘return’ the favour by doing something kind for someone else. Doesn’t have to be a huge donation of the same sort – just have a think for a few minutes about what thing you could do, however small, to improve things for another person, and go for it.

I’m only commenting because I would totally give you a gift like that and I will feel bad if it went unused. Once in awhile life hands me a shining bag of luck in the form of money. I always use a huge chunk of it to do something amazing for artists I like. You, being an artist I like, are definitely on that list the next time life hands me a windfall.

I don’t identify myself when giving gifts like that because it’s too easy for someone to try to return it and it’s way too easy for it to seem like a plea for attention. “Oh, please, Mister Internet Celebrity! Pay attention to me because I spent a boatload of money on you! Be my FRIEND!” Ummm, NO!

There are other good reasons for remaining anonymous when giving an expensive gift. They range from religious conviction to not wanting to be seen as a possible future cash cow in case the artist starts seeking sponsorship for future projects. Alternatively, the gift giver may not want you to feel indebted or obligated. It isn’t a gift if you repay the giver.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what you will do with the gift, whether the giver chooses to be identified or not.

I can certainly understand being humbled by this sort of gift and not being sure whether or not you should in fact accept it and open it. I do think that you should take this as a message that your work is appreciated, gives people something people to look forward to, and I’m willing to bet that the person that sent it would love nothing more than you putting that software to good use.
