Hey, if you liked Persona 4, then you’ll probably like Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. It’s a pretty awesome game, although the random battle system can be kinda tedious at times. The story and characters (the cast is a mixture of adults and teenagers) totally make up for it. It doesn’t have social links though (because when you’re trying to save the world from Nazis, Hitlers, demons, and general psychos, you don’t really have time for things like school and hanging out at the mall).

Besides, who can’t love a boss whose body and limbs are the main characters fathers dressed in S&M gear?

AxelIX December 7, 2009 at 10:06 pm

Teddy won’t be narrating forever, rest assured.

And yeah, Shadow Yukiko is bitchtacular.

Shenron December 8, 2009 at 12:43 am

I haven’t finished 3 yet and I shutter to think about starting it over… I think between me and my Ex playing we got 60+ hours throw just grinding to beat the bosses… all we wanted is the MMO teacher ending!!!

SinnerBeta December 8, 2009 at 8:46 am

If anybody feels like having a good laugh check out this guy’s P4 comics.

http://hiimdaisy.livejournal.com/

I guarantee you won’t be disappointing so give it a shot at least.

John December 8, 2009 at 5:25 pm

I’m curious what you think of Demon’s Souls, speaking of Atlus (although they only published it)

Mazinja December 8, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Part of the reason why P3 can be extremely frustating is that you cannot control what the NPCs do besides vagues commands. Since in P4 you CAN give direct commands, fights become significantly easier

They are going to release a remake of P3 for… DS or PSP, I forget which, which takes a lot of the mechanics from P4 and puts them to use. Also, you can make your character a female if you wish.

Also: Chie kicking a mook out of the fight = always awesome. If it comes up, there is at least one mini-boss against which said kick works.

Ultimategamer December 9, 2009 at 3:05 am

Actually Noah, have you tried the new SMT game for DS yet? It’s called Devil Survivor, and it’s like FF: Tactics. I think you would like it.

ToveriJuri December 10, 2009 at 3:30 pm

it took me about 60h to complete DA with all the sidequests and about 45 min to replay it with all the sidequests.

Shay December 10, 2009 at 5:39 pm

Oh dear lord if you think the spa and Teddy are bad… wait until the next dungeon. I was twitching and had nightmares for days… The horror.

Isen-Artanis December 14, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Nice review, I might just go and get Persona 4.
If you like turn-based rpg, and haven’t already, try out Soul Nomad and the World Eaters.

Nosveractu December 15, 2009 at 4:48 pm

I got my copy of Persona 4 and I have to say, you are good when it comes to recommendations because I havent put the game down since. I dont think Teddie is that annoying however, but the thing I will hold against you forever is ‘The gay dungeon’ which Ive just finished through and after beating the variety of very touchy feely monsters (yes including oiled up gay wrestlers who somehow remind me of Hulk Hogan) and the deeply disturbing Shadow Kanji Im very much resistant to having this dude on the team. I am cool with homosexuals whatever makes them happy, but Im doing my thing to impress the ladies of the game and I must say if this guy make a pass at me, Im gonna run away from the game screaming like a girl, and cursing your soul forever Spoony!

Pindle December 17, 2009 at 9:10 pm

I’m playing through it again after stopping part way due to some asshole spoiling a huge plot development for me. I still love the game and I love Teddie’s character. He doesn’t get annoying for me because I ignore him in battles. Also, Shadow Yukiko is a bitch to beat but not that hard. Once you get the timing down for when she uses Burn to Ashes you can guard on Chie and not have to worry about an extra turn. I used Jack Frost with Ice Boost, Rakunda, and Bufula, with Chie using Tarukaja on the MC. I took her down in about 4 rounds. Either way, I’m glad to see you’re having a good time with it. :D

Derp December 19, 2009 at 12:44 am

You can defend and weakness spells won’t knock down. Still take more damage than you would normally, but still less than not defending.

d13robot December 21, 2009 at 6:26 pm

hey speaking of atlus and its incredibly hard games ever try out demon's souls?

thebilbyguy December 27, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Persona 4 is one of the most enjoyable RPGs I've played, if not one of my actual favourites. But man… that boss at the end of the sauna dungeon was the gayest thing I've ever kileld in a game. XD

Shadow Yukiko… yeah. Totally destroyed me the first time. XD BTW, if you try to open a chest and it says that there's a terrifying presence, don't open it unless you are endgame level or you just saved. Death itself will come out and kick your butt in seconds.

Though I liked Teddie, you don't have to worry. He doesn't narrate the rounds for the whole game so stick with it!

I must be the bazillionth person to say this, but I had to be sure. Sorry.

shinea_iggy January 4, 2010 at 12:28 am

Persona 4 was a crazy long game…i remember watching my roommate play it.

Oh, BTW, another game that is crazy long, but FANTASTIC is Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time for PS2 (not sure if you heard of it). By far my favorite game. It is challenging, and does have a lot going on, but in a way thats fun and exciting, and quite differant. Just saying if you're loking for something new :)

boag January 9, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Persona 3 = Manly Tears Ending
Persona 4 = Adachi was right, all women are bitches and whores.

Harry417 January 25, 2010 at 1:41 am

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I managed to beat Shadow Yukiko first try w/o much difficulty. Then again, I did take some of your advice about making sure that you keep your levels high, so thanks for that Noah. Probably would've gotten my ass kicked otherwise.

Also, I actually kinda like Teddie.

Spoony did you know you get to kill a shadow Teddy. I can't wait for that part *evil grin*

Rumuwi February 28, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I hope you finished the game before reading the comments >.>

Thammuz February 28, 2010 at 11:42 pm

If you like the Shin Megami Tensei series, i'd suggest Devil Survivors for the Nintendo DS.

I admit beforehand i've not played any of the PS2 titles since i can't buy them where i live unless i resort to the internet and even then my ps2 has been catching dust in a corner for three or four years now, and i'm only now playing through the first persona titles for the PSX (Thank god for emulators).

That said the game seems to have pretty much all the parts you said to like in the reviews plus an interesting freedom to shape your own character and the options you leave open for your endings.

The plot unfolds as your characters led by the “insert name here” main chatracter find out more and more about the catastrophe that has fallen upon tokyo, and the most fun part is that you actually recieve, each morning, an ingame e-mail that predicts the future. However the gimmick is that it doesn't predict the effect of letting you know the future, allowing you to learn some detail in advance and thus know when and how to act.

It's also a game that is not afraid of burdening you with a character death, if you fuck shit up, people are gonna die. And sometimes even if you don't you can't save them all, at least not in the first playthrough (unless you really pay attention to almost everything, there's a shitload of parallel subplots that unravel and all of them may lead to some main character kicking the bucket if you don't handle them).

The combat is much like a final fantasy tactics game, with an isometric view and your party moving one by one taking turns, the actual fighting however is between the party of one of your characters (made up by the character itself plus two demons, attained much like the older versions, via fusions and whatnot) and an enemy party made up by three demons.

The ending might turn out kinda disappointing in the sense that all in all the way you handle the story changes very little as far as the boss fights go, you still ahve to fight the same bosses wether your preferred path is the christian one, the humanist one, the “fuck it” one and so forth, (with the exception of some changes in the final bosses, for obvious reasons) and the foremost changes you'll see are in the dialogues and the motivations your character and his followers (twelve possible followers, but each need you to be on some specific path(s) to follow you) have.

It's all in all a good game and it has the plus of being for the DS so one can play it pretty much anywhere, anytime, and since you have a job that seems to be a considerable plus.

Cheers and Great Vlog, as always

“Demonicly Gay version of himself.” *Laughter* :D

Too bad you don't like Teddie. Don't know how far you are with this game, but personally, I found Teddie to be one of the most usefull characters in the game (because of healing and stat-boost skills) + he has the Star Arcana Social Link which is good since i'm planning to make Lucifer (even though P4 doesnt' have the ARMAGEDDON combo like the rest of 'em). And in my opinion, Teddie evolves quite well as a character during the course of the game.

The game itself gets really good towards the end and I'd love to hear your thoughts about it later on.

tfguy49 April 8, 2010 at 10:15 pm

what are you talking about i beat that boss on my first try.

Quensama April 22, 2010 at 1:24 am

Yeah Teddie is the only one with a real evolution. Evolving from Shadow to a Consciousness and then a whole human being with his own Persona.

Quensama April 22, 2010 at 1:40 am

In case no one told you. P4 has 4 alternative endings. In the true ending you meet the true mastermind behind everything :D

I have a feeling you'll enjoy these comics. I read them without playing Persona 4 and I found them hilarious, so I can only imagine how someone who's actually played the game will react. Enjoy!

I actually own both games. And honestly, I enjoy 3 a bit more than 4. Not to say 4 is horrible. In fact in some ways you cant compare them too much since they are great contrasts to one another.

Persona 3 takes you to a conflict of science and magic. Where a company was working on a way to control these demonic forces using technology. And through a malfunction they kill everyone there, and warp reality to where there is an unknown hour added to the area. As if the world stops and chaos insues. Your character is unwittingly brought in to be added to a team of teenagers devoted to stoping this evil force, a la Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. For me the character progression kinda seemed well done, personality wise I mean. Junpei was my favorite sidekick character, mainly because I'm a fan of the voice actor who can claim Edward Elrich of Full Metal Alchemist fame. I also enjoyed the honestly interesting aspect of the Evoker Gun. Its unique and, in a way, is a form of ceremonial summoning representing self sacrifice to summon a powerful inner strength into the material plane.

Persona 4, from what I've played of it so far, has the similarity of a high school student coming in at the wrong time. Except the aspect of magic is confined to a television alternate plane of existance which….honestly kinda threw me off a bit. But it has more of a natual feel when it comes to a team forming out of strife and conflict. The gadgetry like Evokers are replaced with special Glasses made to allow the characters to see through “The Fog” and fight their demonic forces known as Shadows, again from the last game. Now I will say I'm happy that Tarturus is NOT in this game. I hate the tower, its annoying as hell. But sadly it was a neccesity. However, as you explained, you get shorter and sweeter levels that seem more refined and specified to a situation. I'm actually stuck with the Kanji level right now. And GOD is his shadow form gay. And I mean this in both the literal and metaphorical way. I hate this guy, he's a fucking bitch to fight. As well as his two goons. I've gotten close but DAMNIT I cant beat him. I had to go on a slight break from it so I didnt burn myself out on it due to sheer aggrivation. This game has more of a Film Noir feel. Where you are trying to figure out a string of murders, instead of fighting an all consuming demonic force thats building up. But again I'm not that far in.

All in all, both are interesting games with unique aspects that are easy and yet hard to compare. Both games are stand alone constracts within a similar universe, or rather multi-verse I would assume. All things considered. I still enjoy the more mythical feel of the 3rd over the murder mystery of the 4th. But I cant really knock either game….except for the fucking rediculous boses. Fucking Fortune Shadow and Shadow Yukiko. THEY HAUNT MY NIGHTMARES STILL!!!

are u gonna reviewDragon Quest 8 yet

Kaltzor July 14, 2010 at 9:38 am

Persona 3, in game they spend half an hour not knowing why your doing what your doing…

Persona 4, they blast the plot at the hero on like his 3rd day.

Chie kicking enemies out of fights, I personally didn't like it since enemies “removed” from fights didn't give exp.

Teddie was annoying, untill his shadow appeared, his shadow's voice alone saved him.

Larenza July 29, 2010 at 7:54 pm

I'm currently playing through Persona 4. I couldn't beat that Mitsuo so I started over, haha.

Testsubject909 August 8, 2010 at 1:52 am

Don't know if anyone said anything about the Hangman boss.

Magician S.link Max = Capacity to fuse Surt.

Surt = 2nd Strongest Hit-All Fire (Maragidyne). Strongest singular fire spell (Ragnarok)
Fire Amp and Boost (+75% damage)
Deathbound (One of the strongest Hit-All Slash Physical)

All you need is someone like Mitsuru to beat down the only remaining doll. You'll auto-kill two with one use of Maragidyne or Deathbound.

PS. The Answer's quality is debateably… equivalent to poor fanfiction considering the endgame. And a poor excuse for a gimmick (The existance of the evokers) is a poor excuse for a gimmick.

Testsubject909 August 8, 2010 at 1:55 am

PS.

A lot of Persona fans were worried about P3's announcement of it's inclusion of a random dungeon generator. For most people, that worry was well placed.

Testsubject909 August 8, 2010 at 1:57 am

Goddamnit… triple post.

P.P.S. (Yes I know, there's an edit button, but beh)

Persona 3's end-boss theme song is orgasm to the ears. Especially moreso if you're an old Persona fan… P.S. You're probably older then me.

I simply loved Persona 3, though I did dislike the combat bits. (Tartarus marathons are about the most dull thing I've ever done, and I mine in EVE online.), until I finally got to the final boss, I hadn't gotten to a good level, so I was about 3 hours whittling him down to about 50 HP, but at that last phase, he uses a shield that just goes “Fuck you” and repels all attacks, and you only have a few openings to attack him in. Thing is, the game glitched out on me, and he went into a permanent shield.

I had to do it all over again, not a joy.

It’s pretty rare to run into someone else who prefers Persona 4 over Persona 3. As an avid Persona 4 lover (and on my second playthrough with my sister), I was greatly pleased to find this review and your previous Vlog on Shin Megami Tensei. I enjoyed both, keep up the good work. ^.^

By the way, I totally agree on Teddie’s obnoxiousness and would probably help you in his mauling with a great deal of glee. God, I was so glad when Rise took over mission control duties.
