I find it entertaining to watch wrestling from time to time just to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.

I know exactly how you feel, Spoony. God knows I love wrestling for its sheer ridiculousness – hell, I write a damn column about it – but last night was just ASS ON FIRE. Save me some of whatever alcoholic drink you’re having, will you?

I stopped caring about WWE the day Benoit killed his family and himself. Oh and don’t get me started about the abomination that is WWE’s ECW. When I want to get my dose of two buffed-up guys beating the crap out of each other I either watch some old ECW matches or some Japanese matches (mostly staring Keiji Mutoh). I guess the WWE started to suck, because they never were able to breed a new generation of superstars (in the vein of Steve Austin, The Rock or even Kurt Angle). Instead we got the likes of John Cena, Randy Orton and Batista, don’t get me wrong, they’re all okay in their own rights, but they don’t have the worldwide draw power the Attitude stars possessed. But I better stop or it just turns in another complaining about a show I hardly watched in the first place.

Man oh man Spoony have I ever gone through what you just did – truth is WWE hit this point in early 2003 and has been relatively unwatchable since, with an exception for a couple months in 2004 and just before Eddie Guerrero’s death in 2005. Impact’s been pretty lousy ever since they started catering to spikeTV..

Being someone who actually did do the whole “wake up early to drive a ring to a small town to set it up and sit in the front row as ‘security’ just to tear the ring down and go home” thing for a few years, it becomes very clear that the wrestling fans are just not wanted anymore. It was already tough when they started recycling old gimmicks and storylines from 2 years prior hoping the fans havent been paying attention, but the workers themselves tend to have a resentment towards the marks and smarks who pay to watch them. Pro wrestling does not want you.

And don’t buy into that whole “UFC is better” thing, MMA might be better – but UFC is the next WWE. Proof of that became apparent when Dan Severn went out and told people about how people were being paid to lose to Ken Shamrock in the 90′s. Or Lesnar’s title win when they wouldn’t call a cut on Brock but they called a cut on Couture no problem.

To the haters, it’s all TV. It’s all meant to be entertaining. Nobody believes Entourage is real but it’s still TV.

Generally, I’ll agree with you on most of your points. Tonight’s RAW and last nights TLC PPV were fucking shit. RAW has been in the shitter pretty much since the whole Guest Host spiel, with the only decent ones I can think of being the MSG one and the episode the week after. Otherwise, there’s been no consistency and only periodic moments of good within the shows. And the whole “Gimmick PPVS” thing needs to go, only decent idea is Breaking Point, because a submissions match is credible and doesn’t have a reputation to be destroyed, same with Extreme Rules as well, since anything goes for that one. But TLC, HiaC, what the fuck are they thinking. They’ve ruined the effect of having a Hell in a Cell match with that PPV, especially since 2 of the 3 HiaC matches on that card could very well have been regular matches, and the cage was barely even used in the DX/Legacy match much anyways other than locking HHH and Ted DiBiase outside while the other 2 wailed on the other.

Off that note, the Slammies were a fucking joke this year, mostly on the part of “Superstar of the Year”. A fucking tourney to determine the winner? Dumbest idea for the award in my opinion. And to have CM Punk tap out within 1:40, which is what I believe the match was clocked in at by 411mania, pissed me off to no end, especially since the last time the two met, Punk only lost because of an Attitude Adjustment off the top rope. At least then it was a credible finish. I have not, and never will, accept the STFU as a good finisher, and it disgusts me even more that he first broke it out in a submissions match against Benoit and won within a few seconds of applying the hold. CAN NO ONE JUST HOLD ON FOR 30 SECONDS OR SO AND TRY TO BREAK FREE, JUST TO GIVE ME THE SEMBLANCE OF SOME REALITY IN THE MATCH? And Cena winning in the end, big fucking surprise, and to end it all with a stare down between Sheamus and John Cena, woop dee fucking doo.

The DX/Jeri-show match was also a travesty, and getting Jericho kicked out made no God damn sense. First off, it was a tri-branded super show, so there should have been no reason Jericho couldn’t be there, when Christian, Kane, Khali and other SD/ECW wrestlers were just in the ring before hand. Second, where the fuck was Big Show during all of that? Can’t even have him try to knockout either of DX to try and get revenge. Finally, all of the guys who threw Jericho out were from SD/ECW, not a single one from RAW. So there’s that whole logic that none of them should have been there either.

What pisses me off the most with DX holding the tag titlesis they’re never going to fucking work Tuesdays. At least with Jeri-show, you actually had the Unified Tag Champs appearing at least on RAW and SD, and Jericho nce on ECW as well just to serve as a reminder that they can be on any show. Last time I remember HBK being on SD was ust as a quick promo for his WM25 match. If they honestly do show up at today’s taping for SD, I will shit myself.

Some things I’ll have to disagree with you though are, first, Drew McIntyre. I’ll agree McIntyre was getting too much of a push to start off with, with first getting a PPV match against R-Truth, which no one gave a damn about because half the audience probably didn’t know who he was or gave a shit about. And then getting put on the Bragging Rights team was just ludicrous, along with some fuckhead named Eric Escobar who had just debuted that week to get put on the PPV card too. Thankfully, the booking team realized how retarded that was and did a last minute switch, however, McIntyre has been getting a slower and better push than Sheamus’. He actually made me like him after his bouts with Finlay, and they’re only having him get a midcard title, instead of shoving him into the ring with The Undertaker and somehow getting the belt off of him.

Secondly, WWE’s incarnation of ECW is now one of the more solid hours of wrestling you can get, and usually doesn’t do much to disappoint. To call it complete shit now just makes you seem like one of the ECW mutants who won’t dare watch a decent wrestling show just because of the name. I’ll be honest in that it was shit when it first began, but now it’s become the televised “farm league”, so to speak. You get the guys up from FCW to debut on TV on ECW, build them up and have them learn to get better on the mic and in the ring and have them go off onto the A shows of RAW or SD within a year or two after they’ve improved via the draft. It’s worked for Kofi, Morrison, The Miz and CM Punk so far, and I can only assume some more will pop up within a few years. I have enjoyed ECW on more occasions than RAW in the last year, because of the solid matched they put on, and the more focus they put onto matches than bullshit backstage shenanigans like RAW has been plagued with involving DX and Hornswoggle.

The booking team for RAW is fucking retarded, and it was evident last night, and now I don’t even know why I still watch it. Force of habit, more or less would be the answer, I suppose. And maybe I just have too much optimism that “this weeks” show will actually be pretty good.

I’m a fellow wrestling fan, and totally agree. Raw last night was just horrible … and the Batista/Taker match was really the turning point of that night, and Raw just followed the crap. Kofi’s push just sort of stopped out of nowhere … and well, the DX win was expected but just meh.

I will defend the eye cut on Christian … the way his face STILL looks, that was bad. While the “no blood” thing is a bit annoying, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to have the guy who was calling the match in the ring have his vision impaired.

First of all, wrestling used to be awesome. So no one can blame anyone for still watching today, most fans of it are just in desperate hope to see something they once loved improve. Personally I stopped watching when they started showing it on TV here in Sweden, which was like 4 years or so ago now, maybe more. I stopped to care way before that though, but until then I was still hoping that WWE would pick the fuck up and get better again. I don’t remember what put the final nail in the coffin for me, but maybe it was cause of Cena getting popular or Benoit going apeshit, not that I thought or think any less of wrestling cause of it, but he was one of the favorites, and his wrestling to me, still is.

Just wanted to say that you can’t hate yourself for still watching it, or hate others for it. All the old fans of wrestling, well at least the intelligent ones, we all know it sucks how it currently is and its been like this a long time now. But give me an old VHS tape of some old Ric Flair matches or when fucking Mr.T and Hogan stood in the ring, when Jesse Ventura stated that so many things was close but no cigar, and I can’t stop watching.

Its is a sad stay of affears what pro wrestling has become, I do remeber when it was relevent and it was pulling 14 million viewers in the US alone and everyone I knew in 98, 99, 2000 and 2001 loved wrestling however now its PG it is souley for kids and why? CAUSE KIDS ARE THE ONLY ONES STUPID ENOUGH TO BUY THE MERCH! The day the Attitude era ended was when I really stoped watching and they just get these kid friends losers who cant wrestle to save themselfs. Now being a great wrestler is not the main thing, Hogan was never the best wrestler ever in fact you may say he was crap but he entertained which is something these guys just cant do.

Something only some people know about the WWE young stars of today is they go to the WWEs training school called FCW where they get taught nothing and they are then thrust onto ECW, raw or smackdown. Back in the old days the wrestlers were on the road going to the indy promotions and pined there craft before they were even looked at by WWE. These guys are clones of each other who have next to no tallent.

The reason you keep seeing Ortan Vs Cena is because of what happens every Sunday at Vince’s house. You have Vince, HHH, Cena and Ortan going round for Sunday Brunch every week and they plan out which way the storylines should go and being gready bastereds they put themselfs first. I remeber hearing this interview with Ken Anderson (Mr Kennedy) after he got fired from WWE saying that it was because of Ortan moaning to Vince because he “Botched” a suplex on the outside. He also said there are two mountins in the WWE today one with HHH, Cena and Ortan on top and their throwing down bolders trying to stop people climing up and another with the undertaker on top elevating people up and trying to get people over the fact he cant really go anymore isnt really importent.

Also the loss of Kayfabe is what really has killed the wrestling buisness and living in Scotland which is close to Ireland there are people as white as Shaemus around.

One last thing CM Punk is being punished for disrispecting Taker on the last Europen tour so he is being forced to JOB out for a while.

Worst episode of Raw for a while. Usually it’s just really boring, but this show was BAD. I actually started muting Miller whenever he came on. And I’ll be shocked if there was 20 minutes of actual wrestling on this entire show. I’m not an idiot, I don’t expect hour-long epics on free TV every week, but… THIS WAS A FUCKING THREE HOUR SHOW. Horrendous. On the plus side, at least they seem to be BUILDING towards a few things, which is a novel idea for this company. Also, still better than your average Impact.

I know it’s been said before, but check out UFC. I saw some of the ones in the mid-70′s and found them really engaging. It’s more than just two people wailing on each other–if you pay attention, you can see the strategies and tactics both sides are using to win. It can be a very “smart” sport, given skilled fighters.

I love wrestling its great; you just have to remember that this is basically Physical Theater. The plots are already written out. The majority of the matches are decided before the show, only a few matches are truly whoever gets the most points or whatever system they use. These people do get hurt much of the “fighting” is real they are just trained how to hold back a punch, fall right, kick with little force, take a hit, and all that. Good Wrestlers will do a little damage to there opponent and the match will look wonderful. You just have to remember it isn’t real it a show. It’s like highly physical theater.

Spoony there is nothing wrong with enjoying wrestling don’t apologize for enjoying the theater.

I stopped watching wrestling after the invasion because after that fucking cena and orton came in and as soon as I saw these baby faced shit wads I got out because these two tweedle dopes looked like trouble (a white rapper wrestler WTF), I re-watched a couple of my favorite events a while back and appart from the odd RVD match (since he seemed to be the only one that brought any flair to the ring) everything else was pap.

Yeah…last night’s RAW was horrible. The Verne Troyer episode might’ve been worse per hour, but last night had that extra hour so the added shit was put in.

Which is a damn shame since the pre- and post- Survivor Series Raw (the ones with Rowdy Roddy Piper and Jesse Ventura) were fantastic and a good idea to use people with knowledge and experience in the wrestling business do this shit.

I too can’t explain why I still watch wrestling. It is probably because I keep watching Botchamania videos. Last night’s Raw was the longest Botchamania video ever created. I was ordering people to watch it to see how bad it was. It was the worst thing I had ever seen in my life.

After your vlog post it almost seems like this is your first time experiencing an awful PPV event, and you feel ripped off. If that’s the case, sorry. It’s one thing to KNOW that Pro Wrestling is fake, but it’s something altogether different to realize you’ve dropped huge pay-per-view dollars on substandard entertainment. I didn’t see this “Slammies” thing, but I stopped watching any Pro Wrestling after a shitty ppv event way back when. A couple of points:

When Randy Orton tries to get himself disqualified, it’s a way to show him as a smart/cowardl jerk. Done right, it can lead to people wanting to see the guy get beat up even more. Honky Tonk Man made a career out of it. However DX doing it was just plain stupid. However, most of what DX does involves jokes that are basically just wink wink nudge nudge about insider stuff. It was cute back when Diesel was doing it just before he left, or when the nWo or DX did it in their initial runs. At this point it’s just getting annoying.

While the change from PG-13 to PG is a little annoying, the reduction of stuff like chair shots to he head are not. As much as it seems unrealistic to get used to a REDUCTION in violence (the hell in the cell PPV was the worst … having 3 Hell in the Cell matches wthout any violence that defined the previous matches) I’d rather not find out that yet another wrestler is dead in his thirties or early forties. The long term effects of concussions (from stuff like unprotected chair shots to the head) is pretty devestating, not to mention the effect of pain killers and the like. Umaga (Eddie Fatu) recently died … and he was just wrestling with the Hogan tour in Australia not that long ago.

And while stupid stuff like he guest hosts not bothering to remember people’s names, and DX treating everything like a joke reminds us that it doesn’t really matter (which is bad from the suspension of disbelief perspective), people shouldn’t be killing themselves or significantly shortening their lives and/or reducing the quality of their lives for what is effectively something that “doesn’t matter”.

I think, for me anyway, the appeal of wrestling is tied to the appeal of comics. Every Monday night, I know that Raw will be on, and there will be something new to watch. Every week, I know that new comics will be out, and probably a new Superman or Batman comic. While a show like Dexter is leaps and bounds above … once those 12 episodes are done, it’s quite a while before the next season. Normal TV shows I have to figure out when they are airing repeats because of holidays, or saving stuff for sweeps, or moving it around, etc … with wrestling it’sgot the consistency where you always know when it’s on. And so, while it can often be bad to the point of frustration … when you have about 5 hours a week of new content (before you count PPVs or extra long Raws … and that is since I don’t get Superstars) there is bound to be at least something good, and a few mildly amusing “so bad it’s good” moments as well. I tend to have it on as backgroud noise most of the time though.

I watched classic WWF as a kid. Hulk Hogan, Rick Rude, Jake the Snake, Iron Sheik, etc. That was harmless fun. I also got into it again around 98 and watched off and on will Three Minute Warning showed up. At that point I got sick of it. Haven’t watched since. Sounds like I made the right choice.

Yeah wrestling is dead…

I feel you pain, man. I saw it too, but I go through it with Jack-n-Coke, ROH Validation and Pro Wrestling Noah Shiny Navigation 2008.

I always though you were a pro wrestling and im glad you admit, anyway i would you should review more wrestling because wrestling has become so bad it would entertaining to hear you rip it apart.

Its like you’re in my head spoony. ive been asking for years now if we’ve just given up and are just willing to take this shit as wrestling instead of just not tuning in and making them change the product.

To be entirely fair to the Divas, there are some very competent wrestlers in the bunch other than Mickie James. Beth Phoenix and Natalya Neidhart – and there’s another tenuous connection to the Hart Foundation, although you can argue that since her father was part of the original HF, she’s better than Tyson Kidd – are both pretty damn good… which is probably why they never, EVER get any decent air time. Ya know, gods forbid the women that can put on decent matches get air time over the mindless eye candy. And Gail Kim has been phoning it in ever since she came back from working with TNA.

As far as ECW goes, it’s actually not nearly as bad as it was a year ago. Christian has done a LOT to revitalize the show, and they’ve been more or less consistent in terms of pure wrestling quality.

Oh, and yeah, your reaction to Cena vs Orton (round fifty fuckbillion) was… well, the scream of terror fit what I was thinking pretty damn well. Now, to be fair, the first half of the year was Orton vs Triple H going back and forth, and that legitimately killed every ounce of steam the poor guy had going for him before that feud started. Seriously, he kicks VINCE MCMAHON in the head, gets some momentum, and then has it die in a fiery crash by going against Hunter. Ending up against Cena later on just made things worse.

Finally, I wasn’t surprised in the least that JeriShow lost in such a craptastic fashion. Because then Chris Jericho would go over Triple H, and that will never, EEEEEEEEEVER happen except by raw fluke, like if Trips has a heart attack in the middle of the ring.

…or Jericho would STILL take the pin. In fact, this sounds more likely.

I haven’t watched wrestling in about 10 years. I used to love it, but it’s just so horrible that it’s lost all meaning. It’s just a badily scripted soap opera with a bit of fighting.

I love to hear when people defend wrestling. I really do. I wish you all the best of enjoyment, with your wrestling show, but I do truly wish this crap would just die off. And this is coming from a person who watched a lot of wrestling, used to love Hulkster, and grew up knowing the VonErich family personally (I always though my mom had relations with Kevin.)

I’ll tell you what I do like about wrestling.

It game me the film Ready to Rumble, which was way better than anything wrestling related I ever watched on T.V. And Oliver Platte was actually in better shape than Rick Flair is now.

Wrestling also gave me the ps2 Wrestling game Here Comes the Pain. A game so epic, I crafted true warriors of Legend with it. I made an ass kicking Ultimate Warrior, Armitage from Armitage the 3rd, Mario and Luigi, Jay and Silent Bob, My wife (who specialized in groin beatdowns, which I never designed her for), a raging roid freak in tiny pink thong who did ballet, Ranma from Ranma 1/2 and James “the Killer” Cash. Oh yea. I still throw the game in some days and watch a royal rumble, just to watch these characters beat the crap out of each other.

Wrestling also gave me Kaiju Big Battel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiju_Big_Battel) Giant rubber suited monsters wrestling it out in a prop city! Bad Ass

And sadly, that is about all of wrestling I can enjoy now days. No plot, rehashed for the 40th time plots, lazy wrestlers, unlikeable personalities (on the good guys. The Heels are complete shit), stupid merchandising, and last of all, people too old to get into the sport.

I used to watch wrestling as well. I stopped when Orton took the title belt for the first time like …. 5 years ago…

I watched about 15 minutes of an episode of RAW about 3 months ago and realized I hadn’t missed a thing. In fact, with DX back, they had actually stepped so far backwards I couldn’t get into it anymore.

I remember watching Undertaker vs. Mankind in Hell in the Cell live (ya know, the one clip we’ve all seen of Mick Foley being thrown off of the top onto an announcer’s table?) and thinking, “Holy crap, this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.” I went back and watched it and realized that the rest of the match wasn’t exactly masterful or awesome…but it’s still one of the best matches I’ve ever seen, IMO. I remember before that match started hating the character “Mankind” (and at the time I was too young to really understand the business, so to me, he wasn’t “Mick Foley,” and I hadn’t seen Cactus Jack before…), but afterwards, I really respected that man. Today, I don’t think they could really pull off that kind of match again; a really hard fought match were the heel gains the respect of the crowd.

I agree wholeheartedly with Spoony. RAW last night was completely abysmal.

I think a good metaphor for being a viewer of WWE and TNA these days is akin to being in an abusive relationship: they treat you badly, and then when you try to leave the beg and plead for you to take them back, but as soon as you give them a second chance they give you a swift backhand for your trouble.

I have to say I agree. I still watch because I’m an idiot and from time to time they do something worth watching, but lately..buh. I mean seriously, every time they have anything interesting or entertaining, they murder it just so they can go back to Cena or Orton angrily staring at each other week after week after week until they make you buy a PPV to see a match they’ve been ramming down your throat. I really think the switch to being more “kid-friendly” has sucked a lot of the potential out of WWE as a promotion as well but, hell, I guess it’s marketable to sell John Cena t-shirts to 13 year olds who think they’re gangster.

Hey Spoony! Long time watcher, first time responder. I just want to say that I agree with MOST of what you said, in being that wrestling for the past few years has been going downhill, especially with them going the “family-friendly” route. The divas match, yeah, it was pretty bad, but there are good women wrestlers. Gail Kim being the top one in my opinion. If you’ve seen her matches in TNA and from 2003-2004 in the WWE before they booted her out, she’s a DAMN fine wrestler. And her being easy on the eyes doesn’t hurt either. Just go to YouTube and look up her videos. Hell, while she was in TNA, she demanded the writers and higher-ups that she would wrestle, and thanks to her, the Knockout division was born, with her being the queen. I even had the honour of meeting her in person when she went to the WWE Store in Niagara Falls back in October. She is just DAMN fine! I don’t know how much of this has already been mentioned, and I do mostly agree with you, but just to respond to a couple of points;

I don’t agree with Sheamus being given the title so soon, but I wouldn’t say that he’s “not paid his dues”, he’s been around the UK and European wrestling scene for a few years now, and he’s always been pretty good – it’s just kind of come out of nowhere to give him the title with so little build-up in WWE.

As for the Hart Dynasty – DH Smith’s mother was one of the Hart sisters, so there is a little more of a link there. They really should have tried to at least crowbar the Hart name on to someone in there before they tried to make that team work, though.

Have you ever watched CHIKARA? If not, I definitely recommend it, it’s easily the most interesting and intelligent wrestling show out there, and an absolute geekfest of classic comic book and video game references too.

As a resident of Ireland I am so proud of Sheamus’ rise to WWE Champion. I definitely was not expecting him to win so soon in his career. I just hope he is not wasted now because he came to the top too quickly. I do think he has the chops to become a bonified Superstar.

And Sheamus has totally paid his dues, he’s HHH’s workout buddy. Being BFF’s with HHH, Shawn Michaels, Orton and Cena means automatic payment of dues in the WWE.

The only reason I watch Raw is cause there are a few guys I like and hope do well. Guys like Kofi, Bourne, and MVP. Its kinda funny how the fans want the WWE to push new stars, And when they do they push the guy nobody really cares about.

It seems to me that even Vince has gotten tired of wrestling. Thats why he is trying to turn Raw into some kind of bad variety show.And the rumor is he is going to do the same thing to Smackdown, and he is getting rid of ECW all together. (Say what you want about the current ECW, but they put on more and better wrestling in an hour than RAW does in two)

And I agree that the whole PG thing the WWE is doing is killing their product. I dont have a problem with them aiming their product toward kids. Thats fine. But the no blood policy and things like that, think is over protection. Heck even back in the “Rock ‘n Wrestling” days there was blood. And that era was heavily geared to kids. Im not saying that there should be blood every match or every show. But when there is blood they shouldnt have to completely stop the flow of a match to take care of it.

But hell, it’s still entertaining, the wrestlers are fantastic, and overall I enjoy the storylines. You seem to be getting way too caught up in the details of some of this stuff. This is “pro” wrestling, suspension of disbelief is required, and more and more is needed every week. The stuff you’re complaining about like the disqualification rules are simply a part of wrestling, and if the wrestlers doing that breaks your suspension of disbelief, then just stop watching. I’m glad to find out your a wrestling fan, though you appear to not really be a fan of anything right now. Thats who the show is aimed at now, not teenagers, not 20 somethings and certainly not the 30 somethings who grew up with Hogan ect. It may last for years but at some point, it changes back to an older audience or it dies on it belly. Just remember the line from Vince McMahon in ‘Beyond the Mat’, where he conceedes that his true goal is to make movies and the wrestling talent he has is the means todo this. Wrestling itself doesn’t matter as Spoony continually says.

So for now, if this show makes your blood boil, just switch the tv off or watch an old tape/dvd of when you enjoyed WWF/E, or more likely, a better product like Ring of Honour.

You need to do more videos about Pro Wrestling, Spoony. Flippin’ hilarious. I too watched RAW last night and I wanted to cut my eyes out. I don’t know if you watch Smackdown at all, but it is clearly the best show WWE has right now.

As far as TNA goes…TNA hasn’t been good since 2005.

The only wrestling program any official geek can watch without ridicule is Kaiju Big Battel! Think Godzilla meets WWE! Plus the writing is like 100x better than whatever the WWE has ever made. Space Slugs, Mad Scientists, Giant Bugs, Superheroes, you name it, it’s there! And it’s just plain awesome! It’s wrestling for those of us who accepted it’s not real and want a story that isn’t about this crap!

I’m actually surprised you’ve waited this long to talk about wrestling. You’ve dropped hints before of being a pretty ardent fan, and if there’s ANYTHING worth ranting about…EVER…it HAS to be the current state of mainstream wrestling. Bravo. /wooo/ will support you.

Let’s put it this way: Why do you watch Spoony? Because at a basic level, you like him. Will you continue to watch him after this video? I’ll guess yes.

And that’s wrestling in a nutshell: No matter how much shit gets piled up, we can still find (and appreciate) the diamonds that are buried amongst it all, and we’re happy when they emerge.

Also, finally finished watching your video… and yeah, Cena wouldn’t sell a shot to the face either.

And Luke, that’s unfortunately the part of a reviewer. As terrible as the product is, you have to watch it all the way through, twice even, so that you can ‘accurately’ do your job. Reviewers are the most masochistic people I know… I pity them.

While i will admit that Sheamus hasn’t paid his dues in WWE, he isn’t some new guy either. As far as i know he wrestled outside the states for a couple years (i remember footage of him wrestling for like….irish whip wrestling years ago) then he spent a years or two in Florida Championship Wrestling (WWE developmental territory) before being brought up to the main roster.

Just to let you know though, him winning the title was actually a last minute change. As of the day of the PPV the word going around in the company was still that Cena would go over but that Sheamus would be given a good enough amount of offense that he would still get a rub from being in the match.

Further confirmation of these reports can be seen in the commentary…..those guys arent THAT good of actors and they seemed legitimately confused by what had happened. It appears Vince most likely went to Cena/Sheamus before the match and had them switch things up as a way to shock people.

I also agree though that its odd they just had Sheamus drop his last name, O’Shaunessy, especially since they prefer owning the rights to wrestlers names so that if they leave they cant take the name with them.

Oh and i was on the same page with you on what i hoped would happen with Cena in the tournament. The perfect angle they could have gone for was after he announced that he wouldn’t lose till he got the belt was just to simply have him keep losing. Have him lose over and over again while having him become more and more hostile towards his opponents, the referee’s and the fans before finally just having him explode and take a full on heel turn.

A heel turn is the only thing that could redeem Cena as a character cause at this point his is stale as an airline food joke. Same with Orton, he needs a face turn cause as a heel i just dont see what else they can do with him….he is now boring cause they cant top some of the previous shit he has done to people. I’ve heard they are looking to have Ted DeBiase Jr. go face to help put over The Marine 2 DVD so who knows they might make Orton and Rhodes face aswell. We can only hope.

I haven’t watched a single wrestling program since 2006, but i only started watching again because of TNA and the NEW ECW, and yes it has gotten sad. I stopped watching wrestling completely after WCW’s and ECW’s last Shows back in 2001. Wrestling has been castrated and pussified nuff said.

Hey Spoony, relax man, I’m here to help make sense of it all.

First off, look at pro wrestling like a comic book. These characters are led by the writing, and as such, inconsistencies tend to show up….often. Kane recently did a rather quiet face turn, so the fact that he recently reduced Khali’s knee to curry is ignored. Also, I think we can both agree that Vince McMahon struck out with Dennis Miller. His humor is rather intellectual, albeit conservative, and while not every WWE is as dumb as a ring post, he obviously obviously asked too much of a crowd that’s there to see people bleed. About DX – DX was about young revolutionaries, however, when they first brought back DX, they (Michaels and HHH) explained it was no longer about being young revolutionaries, just revolutionaries. While the DX gimmick works in certain situations (i.e. the fueds against the McMahons, Legacy), it really has run its course. However, if you were married to the daughter of the boss, you’d probably be able to determine your own destiny. I kinda understand why the fans booed Bob Barker. To me, I thought Shaq deserved the Slammy for Best Guest Host over Bob. being able to push around the Big Show is no easy feat. However, I thought the fans were very disrespectful of the arguably the best emcee in the history of television. The real question about the 6-man tag match is this – who thought this match-up was any good? I wanted to see a Morrison-MacIntyre or maybe the Miz vs. Tatsu for the US strap. The WWE needs to do some spring cleaning in the winter and get rid of guys like Ryder and Colons, as well as some of their writing staff. Oh and the Brand Speration is nothing more than an afterthought and should not be taken seriously. The WWE currently lacks talented enough writers to avoid all the loopholes and inconsistencies, not mention the sheer rediculousness of some of these storylines. Part of it has to do with the WWE “younging” down their key demographic, which has been successful, but has a bit of a sour taste. Still, with it all, I still take WWE over TNA, which is being held afloat by over-the-hill talent conpensating for inferior younger talent, which changes much more constantly than WWE.

I’m going to give you my personal pros and cons of this Vlog, and I’m going to get the cons out of the way first.

Cons- Dude, you really work better when you’re keeping your shit together. Ones like this and the Transformers 2 vlog where you’re just too wound up in screaming and yelling don’t get your point across that well, I understand that you’re probably recording this fresh after watching the product and still super pissed off about it, but I just know that you’re better than this. Twilight: New Moon was probably my fave vlog because you were composed and systematically sliced and diced that movie to shreds. Ranting and raving has it’s place, but you wind up repeating yourself too much. Also, some people on this site may not exactly know what gigging and selling and jobbing and all the smark lingo mean if they either don’t watch or only have a passing interest in wrestling.

Having said that…..

Pros- If you started doing a Raw or Impact or PPV recap on your site either weekly or monthly, I would PAY to see it. Pro wrestling is a fucking GOLDMINE for a comedic reviewer! Look, that cats out of the bag that you are a wrestling fan now (it kind of was with Warrior #1, but i digress), so embrace that shit Spoony! Do you know how awesome it would be to see you do episodes of the Spoony Experiment dedicated to wrestling? Like a “Top 15 WTF Moments” like Linkara does. Seeing you talk about the Gobbledygooker and Shockmaster and shit. You would be AWESOME in a role like that.

But you know what? You probably couldn’t use any footage because Vince might sic the legal dogs on you. Plus he owns the old WCW/ECW stuff. God damn….it could still work though I guess. Still photos might be ok. More RAW Vlogs are fine. I don’t know. Anyway dude, please do some more wrestling stuff. Plus I guarantee you’ll start getting hits like gangbusters once the Internet Wrestling Community discovers you. Guys like Scott Keith actually started succesful writing careers by reviewing wrestling.

Last thing for you is I’d highly recommend checking out a book called “The Death of WCW.” Sounds up your alley and when you read it you’ll start to see all the lessons Vince should be learning from why that promotion failed.

“Why am I even watching this?” Is something I’ve been asking myself for a while now. See, I used to watch the WWE shows with a few friends and comment on them and stuff. They weren’t all that good, but it was fun. Another friend of mine showed me TNA like, a few months ago and when I saw it at first it appeared like the WWE….except a few years ago, when it was still sort of fun. But lately both WWE and TNA are just really starting to stink up the place. And that is sad, because I don’t WANT to go watch indy wrestling like RoH and such. I like the big screens, the flashy entrances and all that stuff. I love it. But I want them to do it properly!

Another problem I have is that lately people aren’t breaking keyfabe….because it doesn’t exist anymore. And really, with something like pro-wrestling you NEED keyfabe. You need SOMETHING to explain why this guy just doesn’t get his ass DQ’d and leave the match. And when you show, in keyfabe, that you can do that and still get away with it? Things are not good.

As for Dennis Miller…well I’m not from the US and honestly I’ve never heard or seen this guy before. To me he just felt flat, uninspired and dropping references and metaphors here and there that honestly served NO purpose to his job in the show. Now, I can’t judge him for his own merits, since I haven’t seen anything by him. He might be a great comedian and have very smart and intellectual humor and everything, but on this RAW he just felt out of place. I honestly had no idea why this guy was there and it seems neither did Spoony and probably – neither did Miller.

Honestly, coming as someone that still considers himself a wrestling fan, I stopped watching WWE and TNA a long while ago and I just either watch the damn good WWE DVDs that come out or I just watch random Japanese matches.

I stopped giving a shit right around the time John Cena won the title for like 5th time so probably 4-5 years ago. Can’t imagine how many times that bitch child of Vanilla Ice and Slim Shaddy has done it since then. But I also kinda understand why you keep going back to it, you kinda hope for some of the awesome shit you remember seeing when you were younger or at least that’s my excuse. Hell, long after I stopped caring about wrestling, I still found myself buying every smackdown iteration there was until I came to the sickening conclusion that this was my Madden. This shit will come out every year and they won’t change a damn thing, it’ll get a little different but it’s still the same engine, the same horrible music looping over and over again in the menu screen, the same character creation feature, which I love the most, bogged down in tiny yet glaring problems that just piss me off when I want to make my wrestler look just right.

I will agree with everything you say, Spoony, but I will have to disagree with you on a couple of things:

1.Tag-team wrestling hasn’t been dead for ten fucking years! Think about it, there were a lot of great tag-teams throughout the 2000′s, like Edge & Christian, the Hardy Boyz (Matt & Jeff), the Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray & D-Von), the Self-Proclaimed World’s Greatest Tag-Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin), the Basham Brothers (Doug & Danny), MNM (Johnny Nitro & Joey Mercury), Brian Kendrick & Paul London, and so much more!

2.There are a couple of WWE divas besides Mickie James and Alica Fox who can actually wrestle! There’s Michelle McCool, Melina Perez (who used to be MNM’s manager), Natayla Neidhart (who you did not even mention ONCE!) and, I hate to say it, Kelly bloomin’ Kelly!

I’m going by the text rant since I kind of don’t feel like sitting through the 40-minute video version, but you basically listed all the reasons why I don’t watch pro-wrestling anymore.

I agree with almost everything you said, there, except about Impact. I LOVE TNA Wrestling. Its much better than the crap WWE puts out, anymore. But I digress.

WWE has gone to pot in the past few years. I agree with everything you said about WWE. Divas suck, tag teams suck, no prestige for the titles, no major violence… I hate it. At least TNA has good female wrestlers and tag teams (even a female tag team titles), and they don’t censor themselves as much. Thats why a lot of former WWE wrestlers went to TNA, like Kurt Angle, Mick Foley, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner, Rhino, Team 3D (the Dudleys), Tara (Victoria), Christy Hemme, and so on. TNA is where the good stuff is. WWE is not, anymore. At this rate, TNA will be the #1.

At first, I thought Undertaker was going to win Superstar of the Year until I realized it was a tournament. Then I pretty much realized Cena was going to win. I tried not to believe it but sure enough, he won. Even though as you said, he doesn’t sell anything but merch. And he knows what, 4 moves? I like to call him the Pokemon of the WWE for that. And nice touch calling Cena vs. Orton “AAAAAAGH!” XD

I grew up watching WCW myself, then only got into WWE once WCW went under. WWE was fine for a while, but now its crap. I’ve grown to somewhat hate it.

Well he is a wrestling fan. I too have seen some recent stuff and it sucks. Yes i know its all fake and staged. But the point he is putting out is that this can all be better. That’s why he is so mad. It can all be SO MUCH BETTER.

I agree with everything you said. The only time i watch wrestling now is just to see what is happening every 5 months or so. Is DX still around? Of course they’re still fucking around. I’ve been a fan of CM Punk ever since i watched some old ROH/IWA-MS dvds where he did hour long ladder matches and proper wrestling matches which don’t follow the same pattern as most boring WWE matches, and i was thrilled to see him get his big break. Then he won the WWE title and i was like WHOA and now he’s back to bloody jobbing. It’s all so shite and i feel your pain!

Generally, I watch wrestling for one reason: the athleticism. It’s kind of like watching ballet for me, where I can be impressed by the sheer athleticism of the counter chains, and like the selling of a particularly high impact bump. The storyline, while not necessary, just adds a little extra. After all, aren’t boxing matches more fun when the two boxers truly dislike each other, and start to fling insults before the big fight?

As such, yeah, there’s some really dire stuff in wrestling. But then, I don’t watch wrestling for the promos, or the entrance, or all that razzmatazz: I watch it for the wrestling. Hence why I haven’t watched regularly WWE in a long time, but still tune into TNA. TNA may have Russo, but it also has Desmond Wolfe vs Kurt Angle, AJ vs Joe vs Daniels, and a whole bunch of other things. I may not be interested in the hackneyed storytelling of Daniels & AJ’s falling out, but I am interested in seeing the match itself (barring some infuriating interference garbage).

The iconoclasm of ECW was also quite refreshing. I loved ECW, but I got really tired of the anarchic atmosphere sometimes, and it frequently went overboard. The garbage wrestling was also usually worthless when not being done by veterans. However, the lucha and cruiserweight matches, as well as some feuds like Lynn vs RVD, were great technical matches. Even Awesome vs Tanaka had a lot of that psychology.

About the only place I’d disagree is on the death of tag teams, especially “tag teams have been dead for ten years”. They were pretty strong during the Smackdown Six era (Los Guerreros, Benoit/Angle and Edge/Mysterio), and Team Angle/The World’s Greatest Tag Team carried things on a year after that. I’d say five years is a better frame of reference, since that’s when TWGTT was split up, and mediocrity reigned, even with talented teams like Londrick on the roster.

I only made it 1/3 of the way through the vid because this was just too awkward to watch. Get some sense of proportion, man. Go read an actual book, bang your girlfriend, get drunk– do something that isn’t so basement-dwellery.

I’ve never really watched any of your videos before but I’d love for you do to a regular podcast/vlog/whatever reviewing wrestling shows just to see how broken down your spirit can get.

I haven’t seen Raw in a couple years now and I haven’t watch Smackdown in over a year. I used to be a wrestling encyclopedia. Now, I can’t stand more than ten minutes of this. Every couple of monthes I tune in out of blind hope and keep getting disappointed. There is nothing wrong with the wrestling you and I feel in love with, Spoony. What wrestling has become is so far removed from what it was, its sad. The video games really are a lot more entertaining than the actual show these days. Go back and watch some old pay per views and some of the dvd sets and you will remember what you loved about wrestling and why you have watched it for so long. But its not that show anymore. The last straw for me was the last time I went to Raw and most of the time I just watch guys talking. The matches were horrible. None of the atheticism that I love. Nothing like that. It was like going to a debate without any of the intellegence. I do have to argue with you about the original ECW. The tag team thing you brought up was always something that bothered me too. Aside from that, the best wrestling show I went to in person was the original ECW at a house show in La Crosse,Wisconsin. And I have been to WWE pay per views. The guys went out of their way to meet with fans between matches at the merch table, before and after the show. The matches had a lot of energy and effort put into them.I have seen enough wrestling live to tell the difference between guys mailing it in and guys trying to entertain. The WCW house show in Green Bay was easily the worst. No one wanted to be there and half the guys who were advertised didn’t show. When your main event is Steve McMichael and Stevie Ray of Harlem Heat, you can tell your in trouble. It took Mongo 20 minutes to get to the ring. The original ECW was so different than everything else that was going on at the time and everything that is going on now. Find some of their old pay per views on tape and I think you will see it was better than you remember. That aside, thank you for putting up this video. You have spelled out all of the frustration I have felt about wrestling for the last couple years with complete accuracy.

I haven’t found WWE watchable in years though I have tried to watch Raw only to fast forward all the way through it, may attempt to watch it next week though I expect the same fast forward result.

I enjoy watching TNA, better wrestling on the PPV’s (which are free to watch here in the UK instead of whatever the ridiculous price WWE PPV’s are), I find in general the wrestlers more interesting in TNA, a guilty pleasure I’m sure but everyone’s gotta have one or two shows and it could certainly be worst considering the rubbish on TV.

Hogan joining TNA does worry me though, have to wait and see what he fucks up when he arrives in January.

I agree with you Spoony. It has gotten to the point where the writers have pretty much said “Fuck it, lets produce absolute shit and they will watch it.” I hate the “professional” wrestling now in general for it has gotten so fucking awful. There is RoH and others who produce with good stories and wrestling but… I don’t know anymore. I know I left the sinking ship and I am on land and only watching the ship sink faster and deeper.

As bad as last night’s RAW was its nowhere near as bad as it was in 2007, even if the whole Benoit tragedy never happened it would still be by far the worst year of the WWE of the decade. Smackdown has gotten better this year but it still ha its flaws like the probation angle which should have ended in September at the latest is still going on.

I feel sorry for any fan who puts themselves through watching WWE, but especially Raw. They have been doing illogical stuff for almost a decade now but so long as there are people who will not only watch it but also try to rationalize what they just saw nothing will ever improve. Apparently, the WWE hates the very idea of pro wrestling and in their attempt to separate themselves from it they’ve only made it more obvious that they are a pro wrestling company. It is the only business I can think off where the customer somehow is always wrong no matter what. I was a casual fan of wrestling in the 90s up till around 2002 because I had more things to worry about and I quickly realized that most wrestlers with talent would never… EEEVER… see the title unless if they fit into Vince’s idea of what a champion should be. It’s even more shocking that guys like Austin and Rock ever got anywhere considering the nonsense that has been going on since garbage like Katie Vick and the overpushes of guys like Lesnar, Cena, Batista, HHH, and other guys like that. If it hadn’t been for Chris Jericho I wouldn’t have come back and even then I don’t watch regularly like I did from 1997 – 2002. It shouldn’t be hard to make things make sense but it’s like WWE and TNA don’t even fucking try. I’m not a picky person, but try goddamnit.

And TNA, while not qute as bad as WWE in this respect, essentially follows the same sports entertainment pattern that WWE does, which is why they are destined to fail They’re trying to out-WWE WWE. It’s not going to happen. The only real remedy for the rape of all wrestling sensibility is to watch real wrestling. Like you said in the beginning, Ring of Honor and Dragon Gate are great promotions. I’d also suggest groups like CHIKARA pro, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, Jersey All-Pro Wrestling, New Japan Pro Wrestling, All Japan Pro Wrestling, Michinoku Pro and DDT from Japan, and CMLL and AAA from Mexico. There’s good wrestling out there if you’ve got the patience to look for it.

As to your question about what CM Punk did to go from being the top heel on Smackdown to being the “jobber bitch,” apparently Undertaker told Punk that while he was world champion, he should present himself accordingly (in terms of appearances outside of the ring). AWESOME to find out you’re a wrestling fan spoony, and a real one at that. Not just some jerkass who knows about WWE and TNA, very cool to hear that ROH/Dragongate shout out. I like wrasslin. I really like wrasslin. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the matches are fixed, the winner determined by a script. OK, I don’t know if it’s me but I have been watching wrestling since i 1996 and i still watch it. I consider myself a huge wrestling fan. I watch like 8 hours of wrestling per week. But damn i was just kinda disappointed with this video. Not to say i can’t take any criticism on the thing i love, it’s just that it feels like your mocking wrestling, which you are. I know that the Attitude era is and was the best time to be a wrestling fan and i know that there are lots of flaws within wrestling. I sometimes laugh at things like why not be DQed? How come a leg drop is the most devastating finisher of the 80′s? Is Kane and the Undertaker really brothers? I guess my point is wrestling is something that you either get or don’t get. Yeah…Raw won’t stop going downhill. I didn’t watch the Slammies, and I’m a pretty big wrestling fan. I try not to watch WWE or TNA anymore though cause they are so terrible nowadays. I prefer Ring of Honor or Chikara. Don’t be ashamed to like wrestling (or did, which I’m surprised to hear you know your stuff, no offense) …just be ashamed you watched Raw this week.

Carlos I agree with your general point, but your timeline is off. Wrestling stopped being great after 2000, it stopped being good after 2003, since 2004 it has barely been watchable. The best days were the late 80′s, and the late 90′s.

Spoony, my brother, wrestling has degenerated into something barely recognizable by fans of good wrestling like us. The days of Bret Hart wrestling Shawn Michaels for an hour are over. The days of Hulk Hogan making us wanting to see him bodyslam Andre are over. The days of Bret and Stone Cold wrestling to a draw are over. Wrestling’s best days are over. It’s never going to get any better at this rate. WWE’s current creative team couldn’t book a good program to save their lives. It’s beyond ridiculous at this time.

Yeah, pro-wrestling is just pointless anymore. The crap they manage to get away with, day, and day out is so incredibly stupid, it makes Michael Bay films look intellegent. How far off is professional wrestling writing from this kinda writing? Really?

They fought in the ring, and sure they did some insane stuff, but in the end you got to see a fight, and someone got pinned, and it was over. There were no “surprise” plot twists where someone came out and rescinded the verdict, if the Ref didn’t see it, it didn’t count and that was fine.

As far as DX goes, again I agree. I’m not surprised by their behavior though. It’s Triple H and Shawn Michaels. These two guys are widely known for not giving two shits about anything other than themselves. Since 1996 these two guys have been the two must unprofessional guys in wrestling. @Michael: I actually had a crush on a woman for years, just one of those kinda things that would never happen, and then she started going on about how awesome Cena was. I don’t think I ever lost my attraction to someone so quickly. She just sounded so very, very stupid suddenly. She never sounded smart since then, and well, yea. Many people have had those crushes on ideals and fantasy rather than the actual person, and this was one of those, and the illusion/fantasy I had a crush on dropped, immediately.

Hmmm where do i start….well i guess i start by saying spoony is completely 100% correct about the state of pro wrestling, I offically stoped watching about 10 months ago when i found myself watching this cluster fuck of bad characters and childish games (the fucking leprechaun getting more screen time than the actual talent) and saying this match was good this match wasnt and then going back and watching a match from the old nwa back in the days of the nature boy ric flair when compleing stories and charicters you loved and others you loved to hate put on matches which you felt had meaning (like it was staged but there was a drive to at least give the crowd their dollars worth ) and just going why am i forcing myself to watch this crap that wwe calls entertainment (its not wrestling anymore now its sports entertainment)
WWE has such little star power now that they are getting every washed up has been celebrity the can to make a cameo and using that for entertainment cause its eaiser than having the talent which you pay at least 6 figures to go out there and preform to a level of moderate athletism. Again back to the nwa where you have a guy like ric flair going out a wrestling having the crap beaten out of him for 60 mins only to have him go to the back take a shower hop on a plane and do it again for 350 days of the year, thats a man who deserves his spot and has paid his dues and should be called champion. Instead now you have a guy who has been wrestling on television for id say like 5 months go in a win the title this is fucking pathetic at best (why not give it to the leprechaun he has more screen time than anyone else).
TNA is just as bad, granted i do think TNA has alot better talent than WWE but the writing and booking staff is laughable at best (Vince Russo is nothing but a cancer that kills anything associated with wrestling). I would love to see a return to the territory system of old but that is a dream of a fool and will never ever happen. Pro wrestling is a lost art form i truely think athletism has given way to cheap souless entertainment and women in skimpy clothes (writers dont understnad that if i want porn i have a computer ill look up porn).
I think Linkara did say it better thn anyone else in his first review “our lot loves the laviously ludacris” we wanna belive a guy can get smashed by a chair and still win a match, or that a rebel can punch their boss in the face and not suffer any true repercussions…instead we have to settle for a champion getting dq’d, a wrestler that is clearly hated getting rammed down our throats and told we have to cheer for him cause hes a good guy, and a fucking leprechaun dancing around creating all sorts of wacky shenanigans and laugh like retared half monkey robots cause this is funny to a group of nameless hacks who couldnt write a good script if it punched them in the sack.

Now they face the new WCW, TNA, which is way worse than WCW was at it’s lowest point. The Fingerpoke of Doom is gold compared to anything TNA has ever put out. Against this “threat” WWE is doing exactly the opposite of what worked last time, going family friendly to get more viewers while abandoning their real fans. What happened? All titles are now close to meaningless, and they put more effort into the game’s storylines than the real thing. And what is with the guest hosts? It is like the only thing they care about is advertising themselves. Everything Spoony said is true. What place does violence have to do with wrestling? EVERYTHING! They need to bring it back.

Is a good laugh worth the degredation of a product as a whole? I think so!

Don’t blame ya. Plus it not really all that big of a surprise you watch wrestling. Back in the day, you couldn’t get away from it. Sargent Slaughter was in G.I.Joe, Captain Lou Albano was Mario, back in the 80, Wrestling was a huge thing that you really had to try to get away from. Today, I haven’t seen wrestling since 2005, and even then I couldn’t tell you what was going on at the time, and I sure don’t know whats going on now, Other than Triple H and the Undertaker, I don’t really know who all is in wrestling. I’m glad the fans from the days when it was good, are starting to speak out against this shit, maybe though a chain of events, or if we get lucky, they’ll stop putting on this shit. But if that does happen, I put my money on in another decade or two.

If I remember correctly I stopped really watching pro wrestling around the time that Hulk Hogan joined the N.W.O. I remember that’s when I actually “learned” that wrestling was “fake”. I think I had some idea before then that it wasn’t entirely real-I think I got that a lot of the characters had “gimmicks”, like The Undertaker really wasn’t undead-you know the basic, common sense stuff-what I didn’t get so much was the fact that most of the matches were actually rigged and the results pre-determined.

Even knowing what I know now, I’m still incredibly disappointed in Hulk Hogan for his “heel turn”-he was a freakin’ role model for kids. I remember talking to a guy when I was in middle school who honestly thought that Hulk Hogan was still a “good guy”. Now that probably was true in a literal sense outside the ring so to speak-but now thinking back I can see that this whole N.W.O. thing was trying to appeal to this whole “delinquency” idea and basically it seems to encourage kids to get into gangs and such which really isn’t good. Have a athletic commission which governs events such as boxing, pro wrestling, MMA and one BIG rule is you cannot bleed during a Pro wrestling match and if you are cut open by mistake then you either have to end the match within 2 minutes or fix the wound and keep going or they will shut down the show and place a hefty fine on the promotion now most of the time the commission wont show up to smaller shows but one the size of WWE they are looking for reason to send them a fine and with what WWE put into there shows dollar wise they cant afford to have a entire show shut down. yeah, the WWE will never be the same. I loved the Attitude era, and liked the McMahon-Helmsley era, and some of the draft, but after that I just kinda faded out with watching it. When all the pros were leaving it seemed pointless, and the writing from what I could tell was already going downhill. I haven’t looked back since, besides watching old tapes and PPV’s that were actually good every now and again.

Its great to hear another person come to the realization that i did back in 2006 when i was just killing myself to get through a raw or smackdown and i can’t belive that the E has not changed in the 3 years. Spoony, good sir, I am fully on the boat with what you have to say about WWE’s current product. I’ve been an avid wrestling fan since 1995. My first PPV was Wrestlemania 12 with the Hart/HBK ironman classic, which I still regard as the best match I’ve ever seen. I have dove into wrestling past as my fandom grew, and have continually watched the product of WWE, WCW, ECW, ad TNA as well as many indies such as ROH, PWG, and IWA:MS. I pride myself as a wrestling fan and seeing where the product is heading with its PG blasphemy and the same re-hashed rivalries and storylines we have seen for years just has me craving the days of yore where we saw great in ring product, solid mid-card and tag team divisions, as well as some risks by getting new stars over and branching out into different styles of wrestling like WCW did with the luchadors and Cruiserweight division. The WWE has taken the driving force of their product off of in-ring product and character development and put it solidly behind forcing bland superstars down our throats and goading the Internet Wrestling Community into rage quitting their product by trying to become more accessible to Hollywood and hawking merchandise to braindead fans who will cheer when they bring back DX for the 10th time! It pains me to see great talent like Jack Swagger, MVP, CM Punk, Evan Bourne, and John Morrison toiling underneath the aged superstars who continue to refuse to get someone over, excluding Undertaker, who has been known to help get new talent over. With the exception of the push of Kofi Kingston, I have not been excited or interested in anything the WWE has shoveled into my lap in the past few years, excluding a few matches and anything in which Christian is involved. The only point I disagree with you on is TNA, which I think has been doing a much better job booking their rivalries in the past year. They have made leaps and bounds since the days that Jarrett ruled the title picture and have continually been open to creating new stars in the form of Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, and more recently Matt Morgan, Desmond Wolfe, and Eric Young. Also, their tag team division is reinvigorating the art of tag team wrestling. Beer Money entertains me, as well as their Knockouts divisson, where the women actually know how to wrestle! Do they still have some kinks to work out? Yes. Is Hogan the answer? He will not fix all the problems, and could quite possibly create a few more with his ego, but TNA seems to be moving in a positive direction while WWECW isn’t entertaining, Smackdown has reverted back to the Batista/Undertaker rivalry from 2007, and Raw has become a bastardized version of Saturday Night Live that is about as half as entertaining as the years between Will Ferrell leaving and Andy Samberg joining. All in all, I’d just stick to PWG and keep watching to see if either company improves. This seems long winded, so I’ll end on this note. I thank you for showing your true wrestling fan colors and for being an educated one at that. I host a radio show at my university where I talk about sports and wrestling and it is so good to hear a educated wrestling voice. Love the rest of your stuff, and if possible, could you take a look at some of my past episodes and maybe shine your critical light at all. I watched wrestling as a kid
personally i think the 90′s had the best wrestling back when they were still the WWF before the other WWF copyrighted the damn abbreviation, in response to the tag teams the only one i remember and like were the Hardy Boyz who had that girl who occasionally wrestled in one of the brothers place (though wiki says they broke up last august O.o)

I feel your pain man, though I wrote off RAW a good ways back. Trips is gonna be on top until whatever point he decides to retire, and so will whatever cronies he rounds up. The main event is never….eeeeever…going to change, again.

That’s what bugs me about wrestling these days. Yes wrestling’s damn stupid, and WWE’s attempts to appeal to a broader audience only seem to get dumber and dumber but it’s so godawfully boring now. It’s not even stupid funny. It’s just the same guys having the same matches that have been done 8 million times.

Accordingly I can stomach ECW on occasion even though it is in no way anything like the original ECW. It being only an hour and it having frequent roster changes so it’s not so stale helps.

I also can watch TNA, well parts of it anyway. I find if I avoid watching the main event scene entirely (which is really stupid very often) and just pay attention to the parts I like, it’s ok.

My TNA watching goes like this:

Segment begins
Ok is it Beer Money? (if not)
Ok is it Dr. Stevie and Daffney? (if not)
Ok is it Velvet Sky? (if not)
Do something else until the next segment starts.

Just watch what you like if there’s anything you do like Spoony and the hell with the rest.

Hell: watch how Japanese wrestling was looking back then (I don’t know how it looks like now)- see famous match between The Great Muta and The Great Kabuki: Kabuki was squirting with blood from his head!!!!!!!!! Muta was DQed a lot of times, but he was badass!!!!!! Now wrestling is pussified!!!!!! You have wooden acting from Randy Orton, 4 moves from Cena and the same shit all over again! Fuck! Spoony, I think you went a little over the top in this one. I don’t mean your general opinion that wrestling is sucking right now – it generally is – I just mean your really bizarre reaction to it.
It almost seemed like you were close to tears at points, and the stupid high pitched squeals every so often really grated on my nerves.

Watch Smackdown instead, the storylines make more sense and there’s matches which last more than 3 minutes. And hey, since when has wrestling EVER focused on logic? Heel and face turns, irish whips, how a wrestler who wasn’t expected to show up always has their music cued…..none of it makes any sense.
The ‘save the title on a DQ’ thing has always been around….again it’s nothing new, it just usually leads to a No DQ match down the road, seems the “writers” nowadays have it backwards. Big deal. Once Linda McMahon’s bid for senate fails, I think the WWE will change tactics again. Until then, watch Smackdown and ROH.

But for the love of God, Satan and whoever else you worship – don’t rant and dribble like this again, it was painful to watch.

Spoony, I think you went a little over the top in this one. I don’t mean your general opinion that wrestling is sucking right now – it generally is – I just mean your really bizarre reaction to it.
It almost seemed like you were close to tears at points, and the stupid high pitched squeals every so often really grated on my nerves.

Watch Smackdown instead, the storylines make more sense and there’s matches which last more than 3 minutes. And hey, since when has wrestling EVER focused on logic? Heel and face turns, irish whips, how a wrestler who wasn’t expected to show up always has their music cued…..none of it makes any sense.
The ‘save the title on a DQ’ thing has always been around….again it’s nothing new, it just usually leads to a No DQ match down the road, seems the “writers” nowadays have it backwards. Big deal. Once Linda McMahon’s bid for senate fails, I think the WWE will change tactics again. Until then, watch Smackdown and ROH.

I feel your pain Spoony. I stopped watching WWE a couple of years ago. I still follow the business on a couple of websites to keep my toe in the water so to speak, just to see if anything changes. If things do and become entertaining again, I’ll be back. It can be a very unique form of entertainment. There really is nothing quite like pro wrestling when it’s done correctly.

That said, you should pretty much ignore anyone who gives you shit for making this vlog. It’s obvious you care and want to enjoy this medium, and it’s not your fault if some people don’t understand. It’s not about real competition, it’s about suspension of disbelief watching larger than life characters creating drama. About unique, charismatic individuals whom the audience can identify with and support or hate. Not whether or not they’re really fighting. People watch movies, television and read about characters in conflict and wrestling is no different.

Wrestlers used to be given direction by a promoter and use their own abilities to tell the stories. Now they have to follow scripts filled with goofy comedy aimed at kids and morons. I’ll be back when the day comes that this is no longer the case. You should really think about taking a break until then also. And consider supporting Ring of Honor. While far from perfect, it is a more athletically based and logical product to follow. It might help you keep your sanity.

Believe me Noah, I have been watching wrestling (specifically WWE) for little over 21 years now and…I feel your pain. Why do I continue to watch it when I know that it has just gone down the shit. It is now just about making whatever money they can from kids and not give a damn about the total aspect of what Professional Wrestling has been all about since almost the beginning of its inception. The writers they have more than likely have never been a wrestling fan in general and no doubtedly don’t have a clue about what professional wrestling is and what its audience truly wants.

I question myself a lot as well and the only logical thing to tell you why I continue to do so is like I said, I have been watching it for over 2 decades now, to me it is to me what people are to their nfl football teams. Regardless if their football team goes into suck mode for a decade, they are still loyal to their team and continue to watch and root and just hope for the best. Its a loyalty issue I guess and i grew up watching Undertaker’s whole career ever since he made his debut to the then WWF. I was a Hulkamaniac before that until as i was still a kid being taken aback and blown away by this Undertaker character.

I know you seemed pissed about HHH handing out match of the year, but even you have to admit that wrestlemania match is by far one of the, if not the greatest wrestlemania match ever. If not, definately the greatest wrestlemania match that didn’t have a title up for grabs.

Bottom line Spoony, from watching this video of yours, and looking at your face, to me it was like seeing a guy that was actually big on wrestling and was a fan that “got it” in terms of what you expect professional wrestling is and giving yourself into its formula, that it was like a part of you has just died. Something that you had passion or somewhat of a passion before has just let you down so horrendously that you feel you were raped, and it ruined something beautiful in your childhood growing up watching.

Great Video as usual, Spoony. As a regular WWE viewer even I have to say that Raw have been downhill for months, since probably the Draft or Mania. Since I’m enjoying Smackdown a lot more then Raw now. I recently started watching ROH on HDNet back in May, and man those guys are more awesome then Cena, Triple H, Orton and Batastia combine. It sad that younger stars like John Morrison, Miz, Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger and MVP are not getting time while Batastia demending rematches after rematches. And don’t let me started on TNA, its a joke.

But yeah, ROH, Smackdown, and sometimes Raw (with Jericho gone, the only reason to watch Raw is for Kofi, Miz, Swagger, and MVP). I hope you do more of these wrestling rants, since I really enjoy listing to your opinion about the current product that of the WWE. Personally, I’m just holding out hope that pitting Kofi Kingston against Randy Orton is an effort to legitimize Kofi as a big-time star. He’s awesome and the crowd loves him; he really is championship material all around. If and when Kofi really hits it big, it just might single-handedly make Raw great.

As is, Sheamus beating Cena at TLC was a shock, but that says more about Cena than Sheamus that it was considered a foregone conclusion (granted, Sheamus’s relative newness didn’t help). WWE needs unpredictability that isn’t unpredictable solely because of how retarded it is.

It had been established that the writers were going for the fairytale ending for every fued, having faces beat heels appeals to the child mind….but for anyone that started watching in the 80s or even 90s….it’s just stupid. I believe the match that really triggered my hatred was during the first few minutes of the show, Cena and HBK took on EVERY Tag Team in the WWE…and won. Just….Fucking….Won. So…I knew it was over for me.

I guess what pains us, is that we’ve seen the good times. We grew up with the show. Watching it now, you’re watching a train wreck, a bad one, and you want to stop it but can’t. It took me a good month or so to finally shut up about all of my complaints with, “What they should do” or “What they’re doing wrong”….but they’re appealing to kids now….and the way old school watchers would take it is a more M rated direction….which they just won’t go. Once we were all on the same page that it was fake all along, they could have gave us some good stories….but they just don’t try anymore. No competetion. No reason. Oh well.

pretty obvious that spoony is (or was) a big wrestling fan. there have been references in his videos like the ric flair promo he did in the pumpkinhead review. i also found the botchmania vids from spoonys youtube favourites after the first lot got deleted so thanks for that!

personally i haven’t watched it in a long while. i used to love ECW back when they had the dudleys, saturn and kronus, justin credible, tazz, sabu etc but the wwe’s version is so piss poor it’s unbelieveable. they might as well stop fucking around and rename it “heat” or “superstars”. TNA also is a fucking joke. russo is awful and getting worse (somebody PLEASE stop him). there are a few good performers though like samoa joe and the black machismo gimmick makes me laugh

It’s either really good or really bad. This was just bad. Nowadays I like to watch Smackdown, mainly because it was more wrestling. Same goes with ECW. I only watch ECW now for Christian and Shelton Benjamin.

The no blood thing throws me off, too. It’s one thing to help the superstars, but it’s pretty ridiculous when they won’t allow blood period. Remember the time JBL blasted Eddie G. across the head with a chair and he bled all over the place? Where are those days?

I’m equally sick of JAWN SEENUH. He tries so hard to make all these charismatic The Rock-style speeches, which doesn’t work if you don’t have any charisma to begin with, and it’s just the same tired, egotistical bullshit we’ve been hearing from him week after week ever since he expected us to take him seriously. It doesn’t help that his moveset is just as bland as his persona, and as you said, the only thing he sells is merch. Watching Cena wrestle is about as exciting as watching someone play Doom with all the cheats turned on: there’s so little tension, you might as well call him Goldberg 2.0.

While I disagree with you on TNA, its mostly because I tune out the talky bits. I saw the episode you mentioned, and Mick Foley seemed pissed off about having to break the fourth wall.

Other than that, I feel your pain. And watching three hours of Raw would have me acting like that too.

If you watch TNA, just ignore the talky bits. I know a smark would tell me to call them “Promos” and some of them are, but a of that stuff doesn’t even deserve to be referred to by the same NAME that you would use for what they used to do. While I disagree with you on TNA, its mostly because I tune out the talky bits. I saw the episode you mentioned, and Mick Foley seemed pissed off about having to break the fourth wall.

Dennis Miller is easily my favorite standup comedian of all time, personally, so I was mildly interested in seeing this when I heard he was hosting. I missed it and am glad I did, from the sound of it. I wondered if he would dumb down his stuff for the crowd. I am glad he didn’t, though it sounds like it was pretty brutal out there. What do you expect from trailer park dwellers and children, though, right? Funny stuff, watching you go apeshit on this medium and you seem to have a respect for Miller too which is surprising.

Though considering you are one of two Americans I know who like Manowar and Austrian Death Machine I should know better than to assume anything about your tastes.

Wow, I haven’t watched wrestling in a long time. I actually considered turning it on out of morbid curiosity a week ago. I’m glad I didn’t waste my time. I grew up with it. I got really interested when they had matches in my high school gym. Yeah, that’s how far back I go with it. And I’m talking small, hick Texas town H.S. gym. I wasn’t even in H.S. But still, I got my picture (read: Polaroid) taken with Chris Adams and got an autographed photo from Kerry Von Erich. Me and my dad watched it all through school and then were able to talk about it over the phone while I was in college. I even kept watching after I graduated and was married (and no, my wife didn’t understand why I would even consider watching it). I even went to a local Raw show (not the main program, just a road show) with my dad. But that was the end. It was kind of a “it’s come full circle” moment. I began watching wrestling after a live event and I stopped watching after a live event. One day it just hit me. “This is total shit,” I told myself. But I got my dad to come with me to one last show – where I got to see Ric Flair’s ass no less – and then called it quits. The old wrestling shows were corny but at least you were entertained. I and alote of the commenters seem to have the same situation we watched it when we were young and know we cant seem to get up the drive or the interest to watch it, maybe were not dumb enough or mayde just maybe were nerds and that shit is like watching dragenball z but on the abc family channel. it’s a dumbed down version of its origanal, but even thats not saying much.

I’ve been watching pro wrestling for quite a while. I watch it for the same reasons people play video games, watch movies, watch other things on TV, read books, etc. It’s a freaking form of entertainment people! While I do agree with Spoony that the Slammy awards show episode of RAW was awful, I still love watching wrestling. It’s a great escape from work and other real life stuff. Also, for those who have been saying “only retards watch wrestling” I’ll have you know I am a well educated, normal working person.

This is all entirely why I said “fuck it” to wrestling.

I remember watching this in H.S and just loving it! ((of course I never told ANY of my friends that)) I use to believe it was real and loved watching those men wrestle ((now it just seems gay)) and the women tackle each other ((again, they can’t wrestle worth shit)).
Then I grew out of it. It IS entirely fake. The acting is horrible and the wrestling is now following it. I haven’t watched it in a couples years actually. When I left it was getting very bad, but now it’s down to this!? Wowzers that’s like a kick to the balls. I’m sorry you went through such a perturbing event, but it was well worth your video ^.^

I only tune in to Raw occasionally, and, like you, I’m embarassed to admit that I EVER watched pro wrestling regularly. Over the past decade, the WWE has grown worse and worse, with its dependance on TV writers who haven’t a clue on how wrestling works. I could do a long, protracted rant about all the stupid things I’ve seen in the past six years or so that made me unable to suspend disbelief.

I didn’t see the PPV or the Slammies, but … wow. At times it seems in this Vlog you’re using your Dr. Insano laugh. This show really must have gotten to you, then, if you’re doing the Insano laugh while just being yourself, out of character. Makes me glad I quit tuning in every week…

I’d have to agree with you that the Teddy Long thing made NO sense whatsoever — but it hasn’t stopped bad bookers/writers/whatever from doing nonsense finishes before. The AWA and WCW did that sort of thing waay too many times, which was part of the reason why both ended up going out of business.

As for the ‘titles being meaningless little toys’ thing, it’s no big secret Vince Russo has had that mindset for years. He gave the WCW title to David freaking Arquette for crying out loud! (And it happened in one of the ‘nonsense finishes’ I just mentioned, too). And TNA actually let this guy write for them? I’m surprised Russo lasted this long with the company.

That said, I didn’t think even Russo would be dumb enough to do a skit where they break the fourth wall and say, ON-AIR, that it’s all scripted and whether or not Dixie Carter returns Mick Foley’s phone calls depends on the writers. Really, how did ANYONE think that was a good idea, even on paper? I have to agree with you that it’s one of the most blatant ‘They Just Don’t Care’ moments ever. Deep down, they should KNOW that we can’t possibly maintain our willing suspension of disbelief after that, but they didn’t care and did it anyway.

When you first mentioned (at around 2:50) that they were stopping matches due to bleeding, I thought “Why don’t they just show scenes from the RAW vs. Smackdown video games if they don’t want their real wrestlers to get hurt anymore?”. And then you made the same point later in the video. Granted, wrestlers … excuse me, sports entertainers … take a LOT of risks for our entertainment, but there’s only so much you can do to reduce those risks before it just becomes ridiculous.

D-X: You’re basically preaching to the choir there. Almost everyone on the Internet that I’ve run across who’s talked about current D-X agrees that the whole ‘anti-establishment rebel’ gimmick doesn’t work now that they’re both in their forties, married, have kids, and one’s a born-again Christian and the other is married to Vince McMahon’s daughter. And I’d have to agree.

DQ finishes, including those that happen in two minutes or less, so that the champ keeps his title, are nothing new. But I thought that sort of thing went out with the ‘Wrestler wins a trophy only for the trophy to be smashed by the guy the wrestler’s feuding with’ cliche. Guess I was wrong.

All in all, I loved this v-log. It’s certainly more entertaining than the WWE or TNA have been in a long time…

It wasn’t until the SECOND hour began that they actually went to the arena and started doing a proper wrestling show. Is it any wonder WCW went out of business after that?

Their 2 biggest stars retired, the overall talent on their roster is a lot worse than it was say, 10 years ago, and popularity in wrestling has gone down (in 5 years time it will probably be on the upswing, it’s the way wrestling is).

Rock and Austin were 2 of their biggest draws of all time. You know the saying, you don’t wanna be the guy who replaces the guy. It’s tough.
