I havnt had much personal experience with trolls, especially here-as far as I know- but I totally agree with the astounding amount of ignorance and apathy thats so pervasive in the world. Does it cancel out the progress we’ve made as a species? It seems with every new discovery and revalation theres just as many people if not more desperately trying to drag everyone back into the caves.

Hopefully those who you’ve mentioned learn to express their tastes in more mature ways. otherwise, you could always set up a registration system for posting. Only the more dedicated (and likely the more kind) fans would bother to register in order to have the continued ability to give feedback. If this problem remains and its not too much of a organizational hassle, it might help.

That’s awful news Spoony. SHAME on those people posting horrible comments about your friends and family. I’m really at a loss for words, I really don’t know what to post. I really, deeply apologize for my internet brothers and sisters who have no tact, no right and no remorse about posting hurtful comments on a website that seeks nothing more then to entertain and amuse them. Maybe you might be forced to have comment registration so if there are any trouble makers, they can be banned IE forum justice style. There’s a good way to stop the trolls:

Don’t have a forum. Now hear me out!

For a site such as this where there is no overarching plot of a series per say (save for the AT4W crossover with Black Lantern Spoony) there isn’t much that can be said on the forums about your stuff that can’t be said in the comments anyway. I might be a minority here, but personally I never look at your forums, only the comments. The reason for this is just as I said, the comments are far more direct. And discussions in the comments sometimes tend to veer off topic like in forums anyway.

You’ll have far less if any trolls at all with this rather extreme measure admittedly, but it will be easier to police I guarantee you that. Just an idea.

By the way, Congratulations on your victory over the kromags. I mean, Internet…thing…YOU WINNA HAHAHA!

So, I’ve watched this guy named Spoony for nearly a year now, even got the wife enjoying the goofiness of it. Big fans of MST3K, so the humor that Spoony flaunts is well received at my house. I’m not the best fan or the biggest fan, just a fan. That being said, I want to congratulate The Spoony One on his winning moment. I also wanted to thank him for his entertaining his “stupid, little show” ((Or that’s at least how he phrased it)).

Getting beyond the introductions and the pleasantries, I wanted to say that Spoony is entertaining to, at the very least, a married couple who enjoy his jokes and jabs at Reb Brown movies and PC games. There is a lot of talent. The people who attack you are just looking for a target and are wanting to bite you where it hurts. You, being a good-hearted person will always be wounded by remarks about loved ones. Sadly, there is no stopping and I fear that this post will only exasperate their remarks. I get a feeling that you know this too, so I won’t lecture. All I wanted to let you know is that you entertain my small family and I hope that you continue to stay inspired for performing skits and acts like this.

This isn’t supposed to give the impression that we think you’ll quit or you’ll stop making movies, I just wanted to voice our delight in your website to give you a little strength. Unfortunately for your community, however. It’s only a matter of time before the trolls and the assholes completely destroy any integrity your forums have held. It’s actually happened with AVGN (I can’t read the comments on Cinemassacre and gametrailers of his videos anymore, they’re just horrible) as well as Armake21. ESPECIALLY with Armake21′s community, or what’s left of it. Armake/Marcus brought some of it on himself, but his community eventually completely backlashed against him, and his new account isn’t doing half as good as his older account. Although I still enjoy watching him.

It’s one of the reasons why I never bother to get too involved with communities online based on what I watch as entertainment, because everything just eventually goes to shit because the trolls just overwhelm it. The internet community is actually reminiscent of the 3rd world countries in the middle east dealing with uprisings and insurgencies. It’s almost impossible to prevent them from happening, they’re very instantaneous and covert, and you will most likely suffer losses.

Were this my problem, I wouldn’t have my own forums, or I would at least shut it down when the ridiculousness begins to be too much of a chore. If anyone were to ask my advice regarding this, that’s all I could say. I would certainly be glad if I was ever wrong about this, but considering the communities I’ve previously been involved with, they ALL have the same problems, and the majority can’t contain it.

The video itself at the time received a 4.8/5 (in terms of the Newgrounds voting system), and the majority of people offered condolences to the animator and showed appreciation for the quality of work they did. Then there was the Troll, and to this day I always think back to him to know the depths of cruelty people can go to. To ensure I don’t get hit hard by the censors on the site, I’ll abridge for the most part what he said. On the whole: He/she was first glad that the friend had and hoped vile negative things to happen to the body that involved Blackbirds and grubs. Then, he/she wished ill fates for the families of the animator and the friend that died, detailing a gruesome death. Then went on to say how much the song and the video sucked… with some profanities.

The problem is that it’d take quite some time to go through EACH and EVERY single comment posted EVER to do so, and the time may be completely futile if the comments can be edited by the posters themselves, or by posting it up again, and if the ignorant jackholes have a particular fury rage over a particular person from another site, they may be crazy enough to invade the site multiple times just to post a giant string of insults over someone simply because of some particular trait that pisses that troll off to no end.

That being said, it takes quite a steel will to deal with the trail of scat these people lay in their wake. The best thing you can try to do is laugh it off at their inferiority in needing to assault an internet-idol, as other approaches might leave scarring. And yet really, I and others offer little help against direct assaults toward your family and friends, as we do not know them or cherish them as you do. I’m sure we all wish we could stand by you in defensive, but we’re at a loss at the core of the conflict.

The only thing I can offer is another train of thought. In the deep hatefulness these trollers have brought against your friends and family – enough to break you down as they have – note the retaliation spawns from your love for them, and not your hate for the troll. By this, you at least know your humanity, compasion, and willingness to stand up against them.

I agree 100% here Spoony. You have tons of fans who appreciate your work and effort towards trying to make the Spoony Experiment one of the most hilarious places to see your comedic rants about what you want to talk about, but you have to agree that there are tons of assholes who want to ruin the fun by saying stupid and disrespectful things about you and your family and friends. It might be a double edged sword when you won the Mashable Awards since basically it opened the floodgates for more of those assholes to come into the site.

If I had my way, I’d give some crowd control and close the board for about two weeks because of this.

Congrats for winning the award, Spoony! (Yes, I feel like starting with the positives is the best way to go.) I’ve been following you for a long time, and I will continue to do so because you honestly make my days a little brighter. Whatever else happens, know that you ARE touching people.

I’m going to join with the others who are suggesting some kind of registration/ban/pre-review of comment system. I don’t know what the best way to implement that would be, as I have absolutely no computer know-how but I think it would help a good deal. Hopefully your appeal will reach the more rational of these offenders, but sometimes… the mighty banhammer is just necessary.

What can I say, Spoony. You wanted mass popularity, you got it. Careful what you wish for.

Your fans are assholes. While I recently participated in a thread where I was critical of the crossovers, I would never insult someone. When I look through your comments I’m shocked at how many people call your guests things like fat slobs.

Shut down your forum. Really, what’s it bringing you? From what I see, it’s mostly a mess of hate and stupid. It doesn’t help your videos. I’m also seriously creeped out when Scarlett is constantly referred to in a sexual way. Boundaries, people. Shut down the comments, too. The only thing to do is ignore them, because they sure as hell aren’t going away.

And man up a little bit. This is the world of being in the spotlight. I’m sure Reb Brown and Uwe Boll get plenty of hate mail, but they probably laugh it off. If your friends can’t handle it, don’t have them on. Don’t put yourself out there if you’re not ready for it.

So my suggestion is to turn off all the forum and comment features and maybe take a bread for a while. The trolls will lose interest and go away, and your fans will stay.

Congrats on the award, it was well earned. You don’t know how many days of drudgery that have been uplifted by seeing your awesome takes on bad games and bad movies.

There’s always the ahem, nuclear option, which would be to take down the forum, and the ability to comment. That would be the worst case scenario, because respectful and supportive fans would be silenced. Somewhere in between if you could put up some sort of robust system where it takes much more effort to register and make comments, as well as have IP’s banned, that might be the ticket.

Hey, long time watcher, first time commenter. Love the site, have loved it for long, I never really bothered reading comments or the forums so this caught me completely off guard. Shutting down the forums for at least a little while seems like a good idea to me, as well as front page comments. If someone is complaining about the free entertainment you provide them, they are free to leave. I love coming to this site. I can spend hours digging through either videos or reading the text reviews you have done.
like a lot of people here I have never really bothered to comment, because it is quickly becoming a lost cause. Nearly every site I frequent seems to have given up. The few sites that look to have averted this problem seem to have taken some pretty interesting measures. First they all require registration, and heavily enforce bannings. On the other hand their are the sites that have made troll hunting a sport, and enjoy poking them until they simply leave. That may seem counter productive, and in some ways it is, but the point behind it is really make everyone stop taking the trolls seriously. I mean how seriously can you take a troll calling your mama fat when his posts are edited by a mod to say I am a troll followed by 3 pages of forum members throwing every pic of a troll they can find on the net at him.
Anyways just my 2 cents.

I’m actually a moderator on a Mario-based fangame forum (Mushroom Kingdom Fusion) and I get e-mails at least once a day regarding reported posts and hack attempts. The original creator of the fangame even LEFT the main team (He rejoined but only as a level designer), and it was the community surrounding it that was one of the main reasons he left. These people just don’t stop, and it shouldn’t be your problem to deal with. Having solely fans regulating fans on an outside forum without your involvement is a much better option.

This shite is all wrong. Why do we even have this kind of thing. Yes, people have the RIGHT to act the way they do on the internet, it doesn’t mean they should. It was Oscar Wilde that said “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” and i fully agree with that. Re: the forum/comment posts that give this site a bad rep, I generally find that the type of posts Spoony talks about are usually supportive of HIM, but man, they are vicious towards the people he works with.

It happened when Spoony posted like TWO of the Cinema Snob’s videos while the Snob was setting up his own site, with the Epic Fail guy, and probably a few other times I’m forgetting about.

Of course, the thing is that I agree with some of the other comments:this is the internet, and there is anonymity plus an audience here, so of course there will always be douchebags. But I’m glad Spoony finally mentioned something, especially if it’s hurting his site’s rep. There’s no need to go where some of those posts go. Maybe it will give at least a couple people pause to think before posting.

Well, sometimes this stuff can not be helped. There are way too many idiots, and the internet makes it way too easy. It will never stop. One thing in your videos probably drew a few people here, and you are not going to be rid of this nonsense. Best you can hope for is that in a year or two some of them will grow older and migrate away. I know I was mildly annoying as a kid. I grew out of it and never said anything particularly hateful, but spam is still spam on the net. It is probably all the same to them, just whatever idiocy has got their attention.

Me, quite a few of the reviewers on the site have grown on me. In fact I have grown this urge to both watch Angry Joes videos, then get hungry once I get to the Chic-Fil-A one. But yeah, that aside, it really does not stop, and you probably just drew a bullseye which the worst of them are going to take aim for. Especially showing that you are actually being effected. The idea that they are having an effect on someone is probably more delicious to them than anything. Normally, I do not post here as I have very little to say that isn’t already stated. I don’t see why everyone is hating on The Sage. While I agree his strength isn’t reciting pre-written skits, he nails the Fan Fiction Theater. Anyone who doesn’t know shit about The Sage should at least check out a few of those episodes because his subtle physical humor and his (admittedly mono-tone) voice works to his advantage in his read-aloud classic literature spoof.

First and foremost, awesome job in winning Noah. I’ve been a long time watcher and you deserved this award. AWESOME JOB! You and the TGWTG have been my source of daily humor now for the last couple of years and I thoroughly enjoyed each and video that you guys have taken your time, patience and effort to put together just to appease us fans who roar cravingly for more. Hey Spoony One, glad to hear you won! Glad the Internet agrees with your fans that you are one of the funniest guys around. While I do love TGWTG’s video-makers and Cinemassacre, I’m always happiest when a new Spoony video comes up; I personally love your brand of humor the best, it reminds me a lot of myself in a way, and comes across as very “genuine”, which is hard to pull off from a script. (Again, not saying I don’t like the other similar sites on the internet — I really love them. It’s just, if I had to pick, yours is my favorite.)

Now, I’ve never been to your forums since I never really had anything much to say – I’ve been one of the (I think) thousands who simply watch your videos, laugh heartily, and patiently wait for the next one. So, if there’s been a lot of hateful commentary on your site, I’ve never seen it myself. However, I’d like to say that I really do feel sorry for you; I thought that your site always had nicer commentary and smarter users because usually – about 99% of the time – the comments I read for your videos is nothing but positive, with maybe a bit of discussion or constructive criticism; i.e what the comments sections are for. Kinda disenchanting to hear that the forum on your site’s not better than any other message board on the internet.

To everyone who told Spoony to just delete/moderate the forum – I gotta say, I was a mod on a tech site for 4 years; it’s a full-time job rooting through and editing/deleting bad commentary. While I’ve never made videos like Noah, Doug, or James, I do think it’s a fairly intensive, time-consuming effort. Just thinking about the checklist: writing, revising, shooting, transferring, editing, posting, etc… it just seems like a full-time job by itself. I can’t see Noah or anyone else having the time to go through and take care of the forum, rooting out 100% of the nasty comments like some sort of superhero. It would take valuable time away from making the videos that we all watch and love and I think we can all agree that there’s nothing good coming out of delaying the hilarity of the Spoony Experiment.

Noah, if I can offer a suggestion – I don’t know if you already do this – perhaps you could choose some active friendly members of the board you run to be moderators and help keep discussion clean. Having the extra manpower working for you like that would probably save a headache in the long run. If you already do something like that it’s cool – but if you don’t I’d seriously suggest thinking about getting some help on your forum. :-)

First and foremost, awesome job in winning Noah. I’ve been a long time watcher and you deserved this award. AWESOME JOB! You and the TGWTG have been my source of daily humor now for the last couple of years and I thoroughly enjoyed each and video that you guys have taken your time, patience and effort to put together just to appease us fans who roar cravingly for more. Why do some people seem to be in the beief that insulting friends and co-workers of Spoony on his own site makes them cool and shows how much they like Noah? if you don’t like the video or people in it, why take the time to complain about it? Sigh…

I’ll be an asshole just not malicious. as you’ve tredded that line is some reviews I think you understand what I mean.

Spoony, there is, I believe, a rather easy solution to this. Don’t allow anonymous comments. Seriously, if you want to keep jerks and trolls out of here, force them to make a name for themselves so you can hold them responsible for what they say or do. I have noticed time and again that websites and blogs that allow anonymous comments attract bottom feeders (and more often than not illiterate ones at that, if their spelling is anything to go by) because they feel safe behind that mask of anonymity. It wouldn’t do much fend off the kind of people who make the mistake of thinking that just because they are civil they can say whatever they want (you know, he kind of people who use “polite” insults like the word pretentious as if its any better than just cussing up a storm), but then most trolls don’t have the kind of imagination, education, or creativity for that and its not hard to spot either.

Trolls are a hard thing to deal with, and when you’re an internet comedian who’s entire shtick is to basically “make fun” of other people’s work, these anonymous faces in the crowd want in on the action. A good joke will make fun of some innate quality about a situation – while a really bad attempt at a joke will call someone fat.

Dealing with text makes things doubly hard, because what may be teasing or sarcasm plays about as flat as Kansas’s horizon line. It’s difficult.

If I could suggest one thing it would be to get rid of the old “guestbook” style commenting on each post here. I don’t participate on the forums themselves, but if they’re like the rest of the site, it’s probably much too easy to make an account, get in, troll, and get free.

I would suggest instead linking to the forums with each new movie update – whether your own or on TGWTG. If they remain here, do what other popular sites do – and prevent immediate commenting. Make it easy to comment directly to -you- (ie: email), but if someone wants to share their comment with “the community” they should have to jump through a hoop or two first.

Register on the forums and have people directed to a Welcome thread and require a post there before having access to the rest of the site. Require them to confirm they want the account via email… build up a proper community where it’s hard to post anonymously. If that’s all people want, they can get you by email or some other mostly private way – like Twitter, whatever.

That’s my suggestion. I’m sure Scarlett can make it happen if you decide to go with my idea.

First off, congratulations on winning, you deserve it. Along with TGWTG this site is one I always visit at least once a day to look for updates, and you’ve gotten me through more than one boring day, so thank you. Thank you for dedicating your time and effort into providing us with free entertainment, not many people would be that generous.

I know it may seem hard to ignore lowlifes like this, but it’s the only sure way to get rid of the problem. People like this are just jealous of people more talented than them and the only response they understand is hate. I don’t know what’s been said, I never saw the video in question, but I do know that whatever was said, was said by ignorant and petty children and they don’t deserve to take up any of your time.

Spoony puts his time and effort into providing us with free entertainment, and nobody here should take that for granted, this site may very well dissapear at some point, though I hope that doesn’t happen any time soon it’s still a possibility, and I think you should all appreciate what you’re being given here.

I completely agree with you, Spoony. The ignorance of some people are disgusting.

I went and read all the comments about Sage; they’re incredibly harsh. It’s true that Sage can improve, and so can you, it’s what you stive for, right? Many people are making you out to be a God and saying Sage is a dead weight. This is what I call blind fandom. In my personal opinion, people need to lighten up and realize, Sage is a newer reviewer and he’s still learning, and that he’s putting a lot of time and effort in to improving. I think he’s doing a great job so far. I would like to see even one of those trolls try to get on camera and entertain us. Being a former improv actor, I know it’s not easy.

I am kinda disappointed I wasn’t able to catch your acceptance video that some people in the comments are referring to, but I definitely understand your point, some people seem to forget basic civility and some measure of respect for others when they have the ability to post anonymously on the internet, sad times….but CONGRATS AGAIN on the award, I’m hoping to be watching your videos for years to come (at least until 2012 when the world will end and John Cusack will be the only one to save us).

Congratulations on your award and as a fan of wrestling, I pass onto you some knowledge that Hogan said once, “Brother, if they ain’t hating you, you’re not doing it right.” There will always be haters and there’s no way around it.

I’m going to preface this by saying that I think I may have commented on this website like….twice, so I’m not one of the people responsible for your outburst of the reputation of the fans.

I can understand you being upset. It’s human nature to get pissed when someone insults you or your friends/family or your personal matters. I understand that. But dude, you work on the internet. I’m sorry, you can’t make a post about how you’re shocked and appalled over the lack of commentor etiquette like it’s some new thing that has just happened to your slice of the web. This shit has been happening since ARPAnet, and insults far greater than I’m sure anything that you or I have ever seen or even been able to think up have been slung with enough ferocity to make a group of frenzied bears say, “Holy shit, that dude is pissed.”

I’ll repeat myself: You work ON THE INTERNET. Assholes are a fact of life for you. You can’t refer people to Human Resources when they make fun of your religion, and for every one you try to ban ten more will come to replace him, three of which are probably him using three different proxy servers. You and the guys that you associate with who “don’t want their videos posted on your site” need to grow thicker skins, and that’s NOT an insult; it’s just something you’re going to have to develop if you want to keep the game up.

Now I don’t have a webseries. I don’t present myself to as many people as you or the Channel Awesome people do. But I am on several forums and I know what flame wars are like. I have called and been called probably every combination of curse words that are humanly possible to make. Maybe the comments on this website are some truly vitriolic hate speech to behold, but I find it hard to believe it’d be anything worse than I deal with on a day to day basis as a simple casual forumgoer. You can’t just say “d00d it’s the internet” every time scumbags step over the line. You’re only making excuses FOR them and allowing it to continue.

It’s easy for someone ELSE to say “man, get a thicker skin” when it isn’t YOUR friends, family or associates that are being trolled, hurt, or unfairly abused. As you can see, there have been consequences, and effects from this, the least of which is the reputation of his fanbase.

Again, you can’t make excuses for scumbags, because you are only giving them a free pass to continue being scumbags. Someone needs to come out and tell it like it is, and god bless Spoony for doing that. What you suggest is complacency with thins going way too far and that never helps anyone.

It is a shame you seem to have so many attacks against co-stars and guests (and apparently simply people you mention). I don’t know you and would never pretend to, but from what I can tell you are a decent, intelligent, clever person who uses his head and genuinely wants to understand things. And judging from your follow-up to your District 9 review, you’re also someone who isn’t too afraid to admit validity in other people’s opinions. It makes so little sense that the people who have shown the malice that some of the people on the site and forums have would follow you. Oh well. The internet makes even less sense than the Earth.

(I also throw in my hand with the FF8 fans above about the comment that it being bitter fans of the game. FF8 was actually the first console game I ever played, and gave me a dangerous RPG addiction. Spoony is still amazing though. I even think that review is amazing.)

I know it’s under unfortunate circumstances, but I’m thankful that you finally addressed the issue of trolling on your site.

Even though I enjoy your videos, I have never wanted to join in the community of your fanbase because of the comments I have seen on this site. The sheer disrespect that some of your fans display towards other contributors from TGWTG is, quite frankly, horrifying, and I feel like whatever happened to make you this angry was probably a long time coming.

Spoony, my brother, I’ve had similar internet experiences recently, though I’ve never been as famous as you to attract all the jelous douche-nozzles of the internet. I’ve been a huge fan of yours for about a year and a half now, and although I’ve never signed up on your forums, I’ve followed everything you’ve done. The only things left I wish to see are your old Riffings on The Matrix and Starship Troopers, which I can’t find no matter where I look. Frankly, it’s because of this trolling and arguing nonsense that if I would strongly encourage a “No Politics Section” policy on your forums. Saying “Be Civil” never works for these blowhards. This site is primarily about reviewing, films, games, and entertainment. Politics has no place here, and has NEVER helped bring any forum community together.

That being said, I’ve been waiting for two days now to see your victory speech, and I haven’t seen it. I would really appreciate it if you would re-post it. Let the jelous trolls and fanboys of the runner-ups whine and piss and moan. Or better yet, if you can, ban their stupid asses. If they don’t like it, they can go cry at the Newgrounds forum with all the other 12-16 year-old morons. (Seriously, I used to post there, but never again. Well, I don’t post on here often, and I don’t read the comments all that thoroughly, but I’m really left wondering what was said that could set you off like this, spoony. I never post here, but I have to say, anyone who is posting here and saying mean things about you or anyone else is quite unwarranted (even if I don’t know the specifics of the situation). Either make registration for comments a requirement, or make a moderation system where no comment is posted until moderated. Or to make it simpler, delete the comment sections on posts and instead make a board on your forum with a new topic for each post.

People + easy anonymity = bunch of dicks, just look at places like 4chan. Make it harder to comment, and perhaps, if possible, make a way logging peoples IPs and banning them.

Never even looked at the forums or comments before this post. Just never occurred to me. I come to the website for the videos so this isn’t an issue I ever saw coming. I just wanted to let you know I found this website after a long time tgwtg website visits and finally went to see some of the other guy’s own sites and this has now become my first stop. Sorry to hear the trolls on these boards are brutal, I guess that’s why I stopped even paying attention to comments and msg boards. Not sure if this is has been mentioned or not before, but I remember seeing a news special like 60 minutes or dateline one night, talking about how most these trolls are literally internet only generation (18 and younger give or take) jerks that get off on creating this kind of reaction. I don’t understand it, emphatically atrocious behavior. Hate to see it ruin something that is really a special niche and near and dear to me.

I saw the video before it was pulled from the site, and I’m going to read between the lines of your message Noah, and guess that certain people were making rude and hurtful comments toward the Lady Scarlet. If that was the case, I totally understand your reaction.

I check this site every single day, and I’m always excited to see new content, video or otherwise. I have to say I was shocked by this post. Shocked and then angered by people who would bash the content that I love to watch. Sorry to hear about the problems on your site, Spoony. I just walked out of the TGWTG message boards last week because some trolls are allowed to roam free and other “trolls” get warned for speaking up against trolls. And I can’t have that in a community. I hope your recent award will help repair the bad rep that your site has gotten from the trolls, and that the current problems with trolls and flamers and whatnot becomes a thing of the past.

anyway congrats on your award, ive been following you from the start and it nice to have something to show for all your hard work and dedication, you truly have earned your place at the top of internet stardom.

First off, congradulations, for winning. you totally. deserve it. It’s just a damn shame that you didn’t have any time to enjoy your victory.

It’s always been curious to me why the internet just basically has the unspoken rule that manners are completely optional, and you can be as big of a mean crap talking douche as you want without any regard for other people. I consider myself to be a pretty straightforward jerk and the opiniated sort, but i feel you shouldn’t say anything to anyone from the safety of the internet that you wouldn’t say right to there face where you run the very high risk of getting socked in the mouth. if you’re gonna be an ass, do it standing up straight, in full face of the consequences. it’s brave to speak your mind, but being brave isn’t “getting away with it” it’s about facing the consequences. and you certainly shouldn’t do it unprovoked to someone you’ve never met that hasn’t even the most tangential connection to you. 9.9 of average 10 nasty commenters would never dream of being so rude and thougtless to another person right in front of them, but for some reason everyone is Clubber Lang from Rocky 3 on the keyboard.

I have noticed that particularly in your comments the last few months there have been several really out of control flame wars, over some of the most completely unneccessary things to be cruel about. dissagreeing with someone is one thing, but just making your genitals feel bigger by trashing someone you’ve never even been in the same state as is quite another. i love a good argument, when a point is being argued, i love sarcasm and i love a good heated intelligent debate. i’m a born arguer. but there are rules, codes of conduct that should be observed in any situation. as i read these things, i found them almost hypnotic, you just get sucked in and scroll through 30 comments of a brutal verbal bamboo cane fight that by the end isn’t even about whatever it started from. even in this thread where you vocally call for an end to it, people seem to be teetering on the edge of starting another of the exact same fights. and it’s gotten really really out of hand with the insulting other presenters thing. that roast was crazy. I think you’re one of the funniest guys out there, but i also really enjoy the critic, linkara AVGN and such. not all the guests are comedy gold or my cup of tea, but there’s no reason to call their mothers nasty names. sage i noticed in particular eats a lot of shit recently. he’s not my favorite comedian, but the man’s got balls just for sitting through that thunderkids movie with you to make that video. more of a man than i that’s for sure.

I’m really glad to see you speaking out and putting your foot down about it. it’s completely unnacceptable. someone above wrote that it’s just “something you have to deal with on the internet” and that’s actually completely true. but that doesn’t mean you have to just sit back and take, and you shouldn’t. maybe some of the poeple above were right when the suggested some sort of registry and banning users or even just closing the comments altogether. your loyal fans will surely understand, and it will block the nutjobs. I can’t comment on TGWTG because i did not get a membership, but i still watch and enjoy whole bunches of their videos. I sure like being able to give positive feedback for making me laugh so damn much, but i’d totally understand if people just made it too difficult to proceed, and just watch silently.

But I think you’re underestimating the ability to ignore. Just ignore and forget, and tell the people you work with to ignore and forget, to pretend it doesn’t exist. That’s what I try and do with any hateful, unneccessary shit I get, and sometimes it works…sometimes…

Like more that a few commenters that I’ve seen on this topic, I rarely– if ever– check the comments sections unless it’s a topic that I’d like to know more about. Spoony’s empassioned wrestling rant was one such topic that I checked into, if only to see what the cross-section of fans versus skeptics was.

I back Noah’s decision to post what he did. This is his site, after all, and if he wants to bring up how hurtful this has been for him… it’s completely his forum. I find it appalling that several commenters reacting so casually or taking offense to his reactionary post here. Granted, as popularity and visibility across the internet rise, anonymous cowards feel empowered to take potshots and cast verbal stones at anything and everything.

Unfortunately, incidents like this tend to force a concrete separation of person and character. As an actor and feature director, Noah can likely just leave his personal side at the door and crank out Vlogs and reviews at his pace. I believe that what he’s done is try and mix the two; I think that he’s been humbled by his success and wants every so often to let his fans in on who he really is from time to time. The sad risk is that internet trolls, bullies, and other deviants will capitalize on what they know about someone in order to be hurtful. Now, a decision needs to be made as to how personal things can be and a air of mistrust will linger for a long time to come.

I would never have been introduced to Noah’s work if it hadn’t been for TGWTG, which I stumbled upon at the beginning of this past year. I’m thankful for the vids that Noah has posted. His FMV Hell series has been regularly watched by me (LOVE the Kris Kross piece) and I get giggles out of his continuing battle with FF8 (since I can’t stand the damned game, either). But what really shines to me about my Spoony experience has been his occasional shifts away from character and just straight talk… whether it’s about his health, site struggles, and even his surprise gift. It helps me connect with him and more fully enjoy his work.

I move that, rather than offer advice, we rally around Spoony at this time and continue to support him as fans like we always have. He’s a smart guy and will figure out what’s best and how to proceed from here. And, Noah, if you’re reading these comments… please keep doing what you do, because I think it’s damned awesome.

Because they can hide under the shelter of an alias and let a single Internet name be their talking head. Talk to the (troll-)hand, ‘cos the face is too scared to appear.

One could be very angry at how easy this is. But then again… It requires almost no imagination — because don’t we all have, for example, elements in our features that could easily be mocked? — and barely any time. Of course, whenever some idiot with as many pubic hairs as your average manatee writes these kind of things, it may be hard to overlook, especially when you have feelings that surpass those of a vacuum cleaner (no offense to Burton). But at the same time, whenever said idiot writes such words, you should regard this as confirmation. Confirmation that they, indeed, reaffirm themselves in their choosing of the path of least resistance, of not doing what you, in very, very stark contrast are doing — and thus, at the same time, every troll confirms, in their handlings so opposite of yours, that you, indeed, chose the better path. Because every idiot insulting you is actually an idiot insulting himself, wishing he could do what you are doing. Because every idiot insulting you is actually commending you, showing that you are doing what he wishes he could do.

I have never posted on this website. Ever. I have never read the comments section on this website. Ever. Yet, when I’m having a bad day, or if life is just stressing me out, I come here and chill. Spooney, you have got the single best blog/vlog site on the internet, by far. You’re the embodiment of all the humor I’ve ever wanted to be able to come up with for my nerdy, (guilty) pleasures. I watch your videos any time i can, and I watch them over and over, never losing any enjoyment. Don’t let the douche-tards get you down, Spooney. I run a minor (and that’s VERY minor) youtube account with a few guitar demos on it, and at least 85% of the comments are from trolls, looking to insult my weight. Trolls, unfortunately, will always be there, as there will always be horrible people in the world. They’re cowardly, and they have a veil of html and screen names to protect them. Just keep in mind that when you call these pricks out, like you’ve done, they don’t say shit. They’re the former playground bullies that used to tell you that you sucked at kickball, or that you couldn’t run as fast as everyone else. Their mentality is immature, and it’s designed to leech off the well-being of others due to an inefficiency of happiness in their own lives. Some people thrive off of vulgarity — I know I did in junior high, right after i discovered people would react to a barrage of F-bombs. Anyway, I really like you, and so my fiancé does too. We’re always watching your videos and enjoy them. You are funny and all that, and sometimes I disagree with you (FF VII, Armageddon etc) but that doesn’t mean I have to attack you and write evil things about you and your loved ones. Even if one disagrees with you they don’t have to be rude. That’s just plain stupid and extremly childish. It’s like they don’t have anything better to do. And even though I disagree with you sometimes, I still enjoy what you did and all that. I thought that maybe no one could write comments unless they were logged on or so, then you could block them trolls and not need to worry. Maybe they will create a new account, but after a while and after you’ve removed them, they will stop because it’s not fun anymore. Perhaps you should have someone going through all the comments before they can be posted, so they can remove the bads ones so you and anyone else wouldn’t have to suffer from it. I was lucky enough to see the video, and for anyone who didn’t, it featured the usual flare and modesty we expect from the Spoony Bard. ;)

I’m honestly upset to hear that Spoony’s fan base has such a horrid reputation, especially seeing as (apart from his SATIRICAL self absorption and insults at his fans and fellow “TGWTGionites”) he comes across as a genuinely funny, and kind man.

Fellow posters should simply ignore the trolls, and not feed them reasons to post another insulting comment. If the trolls don’t get a bite, they won’t throw in their hooks again.
