If you want another decent interactive story to play around in I recomend In Memoriam (AKA stateside Missing Since January), its a blend or creepy videos, puzzles and web based clue finding, I’m considering doing a lets play of it just working out the tech issues of recording the game and my desktop at the same time.

The problem isn't that it's a Windows 3.1 game, it's that it's a 16-bit game and Noah is running a 64-bit OS. The 16-bit subsystems for running Windows 1.0-3.X and DOS applications isn't included. If Noah were running the 32-bit version it would run everything just fine (I had success running a game from 1982 on 32-bit Windows 7).

If you have the Professional (or better) edition of Windows 7 and a processor that supports hardware virtualization you can try Windows XP mode. The performance certainly won't be as good as native (since it is virtualized) but coupled with a beefy enough rig it should be enough to handle most older games. I've successfully ran a couple of my Windows 3.1 games on my 64-bit Windows 7 install using it.

But, really, what's the big deal with not being able to run 16-bit applications? I think the PC would be a better platform if it try way too hard to maintain backwards compatibility. I really don't see any reason why my Core 2 Quad system should be able to natively boot DOS.

Alright I give – you repair computers for a living, right? I used to build/modify PCs, but that was before the Pentiums came out…anyway, I think we’re on similar tracks; I think it’s bad that the WinPC machines can’t read Win3 stuff out of the box, and you know the technical reasons behind that. It’s not that a Win7 machine has to “natively boot DOS”, but if you can virtually run 16 bit software on the basic Win7 setup I think you’re doing well enough. What kills me is that there are programs out there that create virtual versions of many of the pre-16 bit computers I grew up with (the Trash-80, the Apple II, the ZX80 and its decendants), so I could run dBase III or a Scott Adams “Adventure” game on my WinPC machine, yet we have to futz around a little to get older Windows stuff to run on our sleek new machines.

  The examples that you bring up sound reasonable, but they’re flawed for one major reason. Yes, you can technically run TRS-80, Apple II, C64, etc, titles on a modern system with no more fuss than you would go through with the native hardware, but the one thing that you have to remember is that you’re emulating the entire machine. The main problem with running Windows 3.1 games on, say, Windows XP, is that you’re trying to run a program designed for Windows 3.1 on a modern, 32-bit operating system running new, considerably faster, hardware. If you run a C64 title on your brand new 64-bit Windows 7 box, the software is still technically running on a Commodore 64. Running a Win3.1 application on XP is more like trying to run a Commodore 64 application on a Commodore 128, or running an Apple II program on an Apple III, only considerably more extreme.
  
  The PC isn’t the first computer to have these sorts of issues, not by a long shot. When Commodore was transitioning the Amiga to the newer versions of Workbench it had similar troubles with older applications simply because of the changes to the hardware and the operating system.
  
  The Macintosh computer ran into similar growing pains as it evolved. When the Mac was original created it was treated as a fixed platform. When it started receiving updates and evolving, the developers had to throw in about half a million kludges in order to preserve compatibility. This practice continued all the way up to the transition to Mac OS X, which was essentially a refresh of the software platform.
  
  Similarly, many PC applications ran into similar issues when IBM released faster PCs. There were a great deal of early CGA DOS games being timed specifically to work with the Intel 8088 processor clocked at 4.77MHz. When IBM released the PC/AT with an 80286 clocked at 6MHz, the older games ran faster and became unplayable simply because the programmers of the time expected the PC to be a fixed system, much like the Commodore 64 and similar computers of its day.
  
  The point that I’m really trying to make with all of this text is that emulating an old system is way different than running a program natively. The only way that anyone should count on working when dealing with older hardware is virtualization at best, emulation at worst. It’s just unreasonable to expect Microsoft, et al, to continue supporting 16-bit application on a 64-bit platform. The platform has been effectively dead for over a decade (I’m pretty sure the newest Win16-only application I have is from 1995) — way past its expiration date. If you really want to run a DOS or Win16 program, just treat it as an emulation case like you would with an Apple II. The DOSBox crew has done a fantastic job bringing DOS back to new PCs.

Unless there is some sort of bizarre timer issue, Windows 3.1 should run fine on a brand new system. The best system that I ran it on had a AMD 486DX2 80MHz processor with 12MB of RAM, so I can't be sure beyond that. Windows 3.1 was still the newest version of Windows when the Pentium processor came out, so it should run fine on those. The Pentium Pro came out not long after Windows 95 was released, so I imagine that those, as well as the Pentium II, would work fine as well.

You could also try running it in VirtualBox, VMware, or some other sort of PC virtualization/emulation platform. It should work just fine.

I can see you're getting the hang of After Effects, with the face liquifying and all.

Let me give you a tip though, do not rely much on stock footage unless it's of real elements such as smoke, sparks, fog, and various water effects.
(The only stock footage from Video Copilot worth getting is the action essentials)

Stuff like digital artifacts and static can be easily made by yourself with a greater result, so it's wasted money.
That Noise on the monitor for instance, all it is is just some fractal noise mixed with venetian blinds, takes two minutes to create at most.

Regardless, great work!

This was actually better than “the ring” especially “the ring 2″ LOL killer deer? KILLER deer? seriously? DEER, that kill people. KILLER FUCKING DEER!! and I think in both movies I wanted to kill that kid more then the killer spirit did. I mean the tape had to wait 7 days to kill you, the spirit was possible to run from, but those fuckin deer man… they have no bounds, they will hunt and kill us all one by one, and deer are everywhere! I see them in the morning! the light can not even stray these unholy beasts.. some have killed them.. and mount their thorned antlers with pride above the mantle as a reminder that these war minded soulless monsters that lurk the woods not yet tamed by man can indeed be defeated.. one day we can tell our children of the deer.. as a story.. a fable.. as other monsters of legend slain through out time they will be reduced to nightmares and things that go bump in the night.. but the deer are real and among us! wait.. what the fuck am I talking about?

Ok, I know how this is going to sound. but I just watched this two times in a row at 3am. The first time, I was tripping my balls off.
