Qapla'! This is an Honourable Video, Good job.

  • assiman

Doesn't sound like a good game at all :/ Thank god I'm not trek fan, I would be pissed off.

    Lol, SpoonyOne? :O You're a klingon now?

  • MrZer0

well it's good to see you use those Power Klingon lessons

  • Cthulhu07

Ensign Munro!!! No… wait… he wasn't in this one :D

    Good job guys. Good job…

ZOMG! I surely never needed to hear that holo deck joke regarding Spoony's bird of prey. #2 worst Spoony moment right under that space mountain line… *shudders in great disturbance*

Awesome job as always though guys!

Spoontock eh?….thats awfully close to Spooncock, and that doesnt sound healthy.

    Great video!

  • MrSaturn

Hmm, I don't think Admiral Joe was in standard Federation uniform. Should have gone for a Picard Maneuver anyway.

  • babea44713

The thing is.. it's easy to spam a lot of “fetch this” and “kill that” (and of course “kill that and fetch what's left”) quests, but how do you make a generic “explore there, meet some aliens and have interesting dialogue with them” quest?

As much as I like Star Trek, I just don't see it as a good platform for a MMO. But then again, I am not a huge fan of MMO's either, I prefer a tight and constrained gaming experience with a good plot and fun gameplay – MMOs are more about doing the same thing over and over again but having enough fun by doing it so you keep coming back. IMHO, Star Trek universe is best suited for a single-player adventure game, Star Trek MMO sounds good in theory, but in practice it is really hard to pull through (as evidenced by STO).

As for the video, great work guys. Although it's hard to see Spoontock and do not think “Turl” immediately :)

  • Threque

The stable of Spoony characters keeps multiplying in everyone else's videos, and that makes me happy. Soon, Spoony will be a mandatory part of every form of entertainment, and there will be much rejoicing.

  • Plaguelord40K

“BAgh! Bagh! Bagh!” I loved it! Hilarious! You think me stupid Admiral Joe?!? BAGH!

  • happydevil

    Simply awesome spoony!

  • happydevil

    Simply awesome Spoony!

  • Rokee

I just knew it…the Klingons are all ULTIMATE WARRIORS!!!

  • Lowcifur

Angry Joe should've known better. After all, Spoony was trained to conquer galaxies.

  • angelmyu

    Good video ^.^
    I have to say, I am a Star Trek fan, but this game really doesn't appeal. It really is too bad cause they really could have done so much more with it! >.<;;

  • DerKork

I instantly thought: “There is no holodeck on a klingon Bird-of-Prey” since it is a military ship, not a pleasure craft like those fancy Starfleet vessels (well, maybe except the Defiant class ships).

(Disclaimer: I don't play STO because there was absolutely no way it could live up to the hype.)

  • ThomasFishwick

I don't do graphics heavy MMORPGS, heck I don't do MMORPGS any more. If anyone did go for the peaceful option of negotiation some prat with a ship 90% guns would fly up to them with “OMG i jst PWEd U 111 i RUZ u SUZ” and the peaceful explorer would be riding a shuttle craft home. I got very tired of that
From the sounds of it the developers focused on the space combat rather than discovery, and then botched that up.
I still have my old copy of Starfleet Command III. A great space combat game despite the fact it crashes my PC every time I try and play it these days. Considering that's abandonware at the moment the developers should have just pulled the engine from that and modified it. It even had crew rosters that developed skills and training for all four involved races (and playable, independent, campaigns. Another thing that seems to be missing on this, how hard could it have been to set up three servers? One for the Federation another for the Klingons and the third the Romulans)
Anyway on to the video. Great fun! It's good to see the klingon language course paid off Spoony, but you forgot the boot polish do that your face would match the costume, it's just a shame Joe doesn't have a starfleet uniform. A red jumper with a insignia taped on would have been funny…

    Thomas
PS another improvement (to the game) should be adaptable ship skins! I'd modify mine into a White Star! That would be awesome! That or just in game battle damage either would do me!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Certifiable Sam Timmins

This game is not worthy of adding “'VO'KOR” to S.T.O.

  • Salenstormwing

Good to see Spoony is putting that Power Klingon lessons to good use. *watches some more* Oh lord, I was just thinking how Spoontock was getting sort of 'Warrior'-esque in his speech, right before he started talking about Destrucity. I'm so glad I wasn't drinking anything at the time or it would have been all over the computer.

Dialogue options would be a good option though. Mass Effect 2 had probably one of the best dialogue options, where you can be the Captain Picard of the universe or the Dirty Harry of space!

But yes, great video Spoony and Joe!

    • Anonymous

“Oh lord, I was just thinking how Spoontock was getting sort of ‘Warrior’-esque in his speech, right before he started talking about Destrucity.”

Same here. I was half expecting a Skronk!

Awesome job on the colab guys :D

  • batlashes

I thought the big joke would be that they would have this epic battle that ended up with them destroying each other and the music would build up so much… but then they both respawn like nothing had happened and then go 'Yep' '…' yep'. 'See you next tuesday?' 'yeah, sure man' Roll credits. :)

  • Bondpirate

Spoontock and Admiral Joe, awesome job on the video. It really is a shame on the final product released so far for STO.

  • Anonymous

STO is the biggest fail of the MMO market since Tabula Rasa. And the only game in which I will cheer for the Goons:)

Come to EVE Online instead. Hell, I can even give you 21 days free trial time instead of 14

  • Kevin_Holsinger

Good morning Spoony and fellow Spooners.

“I've never trusted Spoontock…and I never will. I can never forgive him for the death of my boy.”

    “I…have had…enough of SPOONTOCK!”

Feel free to add your own bastardized Trek-quotes.

  • Havoc

IMHO the game gets a major FAIL.

  • Il Principe

I do understand Joe's and Spoony's point fully. I played STO as a Beta tester, and though I was thrilled to play a Star Trek game, the experience was a pretty limited one. Mostly because it didn't feel like Star Trek. Especially TNG was very heavy on diplomacy and cultural diversity, and it just doesn't feel like anything matters, its mostly the same battle over and over again, and not being found of MMO in the first place, I'm not much of a grinder.
Thus I am actually glad I played as a tester, because after that I was certain I wouldn't spend money on something like STO.

  • MrZer0

Am I the only person who considers SpoonyCraig as a persona? I know it's basically just him in a gray pocket T and glasses but still, it was one of the first

  • Caelan

All right! I've been waiting for this review :D Great job as always Spoony, I love the Ultimate Warrior reference!

I hope you two review SWTOR together when it comes up.

  • Caelan

Or an A-wing Slash ooooh, but they don't have star fighters. ;)

  • Caelan

I even thought that was coming half way through. I thought Spoontock would have finished Joe off, given his idea for an improvement, then Joe respawn.

  • Caelan

It looks like Star Wars the Old Republic is going to use the Mass Effect Dialogue system.

  • zeroninetyfour

Is it just me or has Spoony been dressing up alot lately?

The Battlefield Earth review, Party Mania, and now as a Klingon.

  • droge085

Spoontock=Epic. Please bring him back sometime.

  • lostsorcerer

Klingons have the Power of the Warrior!!!! KAGH! *klingon skronk*

I wish we could've seen more of you and Joe bouncing off eachother during the crossover vids

  • hwaldar

Dude, Spootock is by far the coolest klingon name ever. screw you warf!

  • Poipoi

    You make an awesome Klingon!

  • http://www.facebook.com/MaSQuEdePuSTA Meurant Arthur

Okay, so basically if you want to improve STO, you've got to add elements from the Mass Effect series.
    Seems reasonable.

  • They Call Me The Fizz

Well, Bioware's got The Old Republic coming down the pike… So Star Trek's loss is Star Wars' gain

….of course this will result in a re-ignition of fanboy wars…much too my amusement…

  • Caelan

Or just play SWTOR since it will have those elements built in from the start. Got to love Bioware.

  • They Call Me The Fizz

I should have seen this coming considering your back and forth tweets on the subject of STO

You'd think something like EVE Online would be far more fitting for the Star Trek license rather than Champions

    • Anonymous

Well that’s why I’d say that even though it doesn’t have a major license involved, you might as well play EVE if you’re looking for an open-ended space MMO. I personally avoid it because I dislike “sandbox” type MMOs, but I know plenty of people who do, and EVE is by far their favorite of sandbox games.

  • Solid_Gabriel

Nice to see you guys team up.
I haven't played the game, but those complaints seems pretty reasonable to me.

  • Haplo699

I was hesitant to watch at first as I seem to be one of the only, err… “unique” individuals enjoying my time with STO, but I have to admit all improvements mentioned were valid. Hope springs eternal though as EVE was able to revamp it's entire graphics engine with a patch.

The video was very funny despite Spoony seeming to have an armadillo's rear end draped across his face, still respect is due for getting baked alive in leather and appliances…. again! LOL

  • DJGamer

I wonder when anyone will be trying to translate Spoontock's Klingon speech part. Of course, maybe they just figure that any true Star Trek fan should already know what he's saying. :p

  • Havoc

    SpoonyGirl!

Damn… if Spoony made a whole episode with all of his personas… maybe making that RPG session (Planescape maybe) that would be awesome.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Gaffen/1118004381 Joe Gaffen

But.. but Admiral Joe's weapons were down after the first attack! Spoontock should've won!

    Heh
I think Spoony is the master of throw away characters. He makes one per video.

He must have reversed the polarity on something or some other technobable. Honestly, in Star Trek reversing polarity is equivalent to magic.

  • HighPriestDre

I want Gorn ships, darn it!

  • http://www.gamespot.com/users/cornbredx CornBRED-X

I agree with you (Spoony) and Joe's assesment even though I have no interest in star trek but I have to be honest, I am surprised at your expectations. New MMOs are never fully polished out, and the things you want to see were never talked about at all that I recall. They did say there would be alot of places to explore or something but due to this being an MMO I read that to men alot of areas but virtually theyd all be the same, and read nothing of interest in their game plan for this game.

I watched Giantbomb play some of the beta and it looked pretty boring combat wise. Granted you cant really get anything out of a beta which is why I was waiting for Joe's comments on the game to see if there was any improvement (but having played 7 MMOs and beta'd a couple I knew it wouldnt be much different- have to wait and see, though, so I did). I know Joe is new to the world of MMOs and sadly that means he doesnt know, most MMOs never change drastically after release. Either they do and drive away the players (because they turn it into something worse and convoluted) or they make no changes and slowly build on what they have. He can make these videos and give them tips, but they wont listen, and at this point if they never intended to make the game this way, it wont ever happen. Sadly I suspect this game was built from the ground up all wrong and they had no intention of making the game you guys wanted. Even in the old interview Joe did where he asked about the focus of the game they were stating its a setting where its all war (meaning no focus on exploration but never actually saying that). You have to learn to hear what DEVs are really saying, with MMOs they tend to imply more then actually outright say “uh, no this game isnt gonna be at all what the fans want”

Its sad but it happens everytime with MMOs. Despite the graphical look of it, Kotor is the only new MMO that currently interests me as I am bored of the stale, as you said “lifeless” feel to MMOs. So many other games with a much more epic feel that MMOs are strangely not keeping up with. While multiplayer is expanding, MMOs are still doing the same thing. I've played so many MMOs and am only interested now in the ones that innovate. Beyond that, MMOs are just good for saving money so I dont have to buy any games for awhile. I'll just play wow for that for the time being, at least that game is improving and has some sense of interest to me, even if its fleeting.

Anyway, ya Joe, sorry to tell ya but this sounds like its just another typical MMO. I dont expect you'll play it much, if ever, again. It wont ever be as interesting as it should be. These games generally try to make money off the name alone, not so much off of actually replicating an experience (which is what you'd think they'd try to do with an MMO).

  • lostsorcerer

I think the indicative problem is what I like the call 'the madden complex'. Developers dont want to make unique MMOs because they require a lot of work, time, and tend to piss off potential fans which makes all the work for naught.
So what do these developers do? They focus on what we know, even if it isn't all the good.
They take a base setting, give it either the 'Like WoW' or 'NOT WoW' base build, and ship it because sadly, that's the main 2 demographics. Guys who like WoW and guys who HATE WoW.

  • lostsorcerer

I wasn't talking Too much out of my ass there :P

  • paulrrr

Love the corbomite reference to the original Star Trek.

  • http://www.gamespot.com/users/cornbredx CornBRED-X

I had alot to say but my browser messed up and I dont feel like typing it all again. Just know I agree with you and in my case I know I can only speculate about these things. Even as a beta tester I didnt know the whole picture so I know there's logic to the madness and its just beyond me because I don't work on making games.

  • HypnoticGenes

Turl + The Gatecleaner + The Ultimate Warrior = Spoontock

  • SignNinja

You know, I’m not much for online games, particularly because my system is old and decrepit and I need a new one badly, but also because the last one I played was WoW for 1 day. While I was trying to find a group to help me and my poor little orc out I got repeatedly shunned and ignored. But I digress, Star Trek Online looks to be just another basic MMORPG with Star Trek slapped on it. Now I was never a big fan of Star Trek, in fact during the Sci-Fi Wars of the 90s I held my lightsaber high and fought for the Rebel Alliance. But with my surprising interest in the recent movie plus how badly George Lucas screwed up the prequels, I have just recently started my voyage into Starfleet. So I won’t really buy it until I know one of two things.

    1. That Star Trek really is my bag and I can fully become a fan.

    2. That the game itself will actually improve over the years adding another story mode for Klingons, separate story options for both, etc.

Until then, I’ll look forward to meeting you all on the battlefield in Star Wars: TOR. (once I get a new computer)

  • Strelnikov

So is Spoontock some kind of refrence to that old John Wayne film “McLintock!”, or have I seen way too many old movies?

I haven't played STO, but not being able to wander around your ship or actually talk to enemy commanders on the bridge viewscreen has to be the biggest load I've ever heard of; even in the sub-par late-90s WWII naval game “Destroyer Commander” you could go from the bridge to the engineering room or to one of the gun turrets or the torpedoman's station….you weren't stuck looking at a map or a model of the ship steaming around the ocean.

  • inferno_phoenix

hey i just wanted to say i loved the video Spoontock Was funny and Admiral Joe is cool to ^_^ i love how he just like Randomly in the middle turn and started talking about improvements again and i will Admit i have not played this i may not I have been a long term player of wow i joined in because of some friends and i have to say its BORING same quest after quest and my friends always say OH get to 80 and that's when the good Stuff happens i will end up stopping soon i think But you know Spoony you should look in to V-13 i think there calling it for now the Original makes of Fallout are getting back to gather and making a mmorpg and They want to bring new life to it saying other mmo's are bland and they are if i would Trust any one its Them becuase they are Great minds Interplay's

  • http://www.facebook.com/Treima Jimi Alexander

Meh, not bad. I'm not a real big fan of Angry Joe, but your Klingon jawing was pretty funny.

  • natethedestroyer

firstly, excelent video, i enjoy the “sketch” stlye as much as your usual format, i know it takes more editing and production but i hope to see them more often
Secondly, i havnet played the game STO bu ti am a startrek fan, i cant belive they dont even give you the brigde screen comunictions that wer interactive, think about this what if thier were some secnrios where you either had to figh taginst impossible odds OR use what i call Picard tatcis and talk/ decive your way out of the situation peacfully,i guess people just wanna blow stff up, and not being able to EXPLORE the galxay wtheck is that, that IS startrek did the devlopers not even listen to the INTRO to every episode of TNG? and NO HOLODECKS thats really really lame, just think they coudl have doenloadable holodeck moudels, and even allow user created content that you could share with other players, it wouldn't be to hard just customizable skins and rooms and secrios and such, i msut admit im no tmuch for online mutliplayer mostly due to the mothly cost, and i can't see paying $15 a month to “blow stuff up” you can do that on any game. i'd liek to see a game that Reflects the Star Trek experance, not jsut a genric “blow stuff up” game with licensed content, you've played Mass effect, imagine if BioWare did that to Startrek THEN we'd be on the right track

Does Joe's ship have nanites, or do Klingon Bird of Preys lose to derelict constitution classes ? :P

Unfortunately I really can only count on one hand the great Star Trek games, one of them being Star Trek: Harbinger. A myst style FMV game Noone has heard of apparently…

  • Caelan

As I said before, Joe must have reversed the polarity on something or some other technobable. In Star Trek, reversing polarity is equivalent to magic. It could turn a replicator into a transporter or planet destroying warhead.

Dude! Spoontock reminds me of Ultimate Warrior LOL Still, I see any improvement in STO very very difficult. Abandon all hope. Star Trek Online is what it is, a cheap crap. Our money got stolen.

  • mkhecker

I've learned some time ago that it's just not worth hyping a MMO. Ignore them until you can actually play them. Now breaking that rule, these are the only future MMOs I can foresee having a chance of being any good:

Star Wars: The Old Republic – First thing it has going for it is it's Bioware. They have the resources and ability to produce something worthwhile. Second, they're actually trying to make a new type of MMO, playing to their strengths as a developer.

Final Fantasy XIV – This is one of the few cases where I believe lightning can strike twice. FFXI was a wonderful game. At its core it was mostly just an EverQuest clone. However Square can craft such wonderful worlds, this ability made the game something special beyond its core mechanics. If they can do this again with fresher game play and a more powerful graphics engine, I'd be very happy.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm – Normally I wouldn't include an expansion in a list such as this, but there's a reason WoW is such an incredibly successful MMO. It is a really good game. The problem has been for some time, however, that this does not translate to the new player experience. People who are completely new to WoW try the free trial, and they're basically playing the same game we all did back in 2004. WoW has greatly evolved since them into an even better game, but you are forced to play for dozens of hours to get the chance to experience that. It's like being forced to play Halo 1 to the end before you even have the option of buying Halo 3. With Cataclysm, finally, that will no longer be the case. With most of the early content being redone entirely, new players will be able to try WoW and be playing a 2010 game from the start.

  • RaiderRich2001

    1) Bioware makes great *single player* RPG games. Making an MMO is a different kettle of fish. The demands are different. You have to foster a good community. You have to communicate well with your player base. You have to learn to stand your ground when making an unpopular but necessary change. You have to deal with griefers, gold farmers, exploiters and anyone else hell bent on ruining everyone's fun. You have to manage an entire economy.

When Blizzard got in the MMO game, they at least had years of Battle.net experience on their side and were prepared to handle some of the aspects of online gaming, the others they slowly learned over time.

    2) I like Square, but their last online entry wasn't that good, so I don't have high hopes for FFIV.

    3) World of Warcraft can revamp the world all it wants to. What they need to do is revamp the player base. 90% if WoW players are socially inept, immature retards and griefers.

  • Caelan

This isn't EA games first MMO.

  • RaiderRich2001

EA Games other MMOs were developed by Origin and Mythic though

  • Caelan

So? Still all EA games MMO's. So they have talent and past experience they can draw from. Heck they could hire experienced devs from any game really. I'm sure there are MMO veterans on the team that know about the pitfalls of an MMO and how to deal with it. I believe I read a dev posting on gold farmers a year ago on the sight. So they are thinking about it.

I'm hoping you're wrong about FF14 too. I like FF games and was really disappointed in FF11.

i'm surprised they didn't have you recruit actual players to your crew. have the players do individual quests based on the position they picked aboard the ship also based on the planted visited. all leading to a group quest on the planet they're visiting. some needing others to help finish individual quests.

I bought this game, not realizing there was no single player mode. Wish I had spent my money on something worth while. There is no way I’m going to pay out every month, just to play a game, after buying it. What a rip off! It’s sat on the shelf ever since I find out there was no single player mode and that’s where it will stay, unless I sell it.
