And then there was that one time Batman straight-up murdered an unarmed man by shoving a bomb down his pants and smiling about it.

You think Penguin provides the clown costumes when you sign up, or you gotta bring your own uniform?

Just like MacGyver: hated guns, had -no- problem blowing people up, knocking them off cliffs, electrocuting, burning, even spraying them with lethal doses of radiation; as long as it didn’t come from it was a gun, it was a-okay.

Did Macgyver really spray radiation at bad guys? I know he did things that could have but he made sure they wouldn’t kill but not radiation.

That is the truth! The bomb was the killer, not Batman!
Batman was just… helping the bomb to get attached to the guy… sort of…

  • droge085

    I love this scene.

  • Renaissance_nerd

alot of people don't realize that when Batman started out he was a cold vicious killer of killers. Then the animated series came along and now batman has super morals as one of his powers and won't take a life.

    Wilhelm Scream @ 0:10 ^^

  • Covarr

He also didn't kill anybody in the Adam West series, which was well before Batman: The Animated Series.

On the other hand, this makes him much more badass. Anybody can shoot a bad guy in the face. Taking somebody out, and disarming them, without killing (or even severely injuring them in many cases), is quite a bit more difficult and impressive.

  • http://twitter.com/KatKaleen KatKaleen

It may be weird, but although I watched everything with Batman in it when I was a kid, and even collected the comics for almost a decade, I never once thought about this “Bats shall not kill” thing.
I was completely unaware of the matter until I heard other people argue about it.
And I still don´t care as long as he kicks some villain ass.

  • trip12313

    Well, those weren't only clowns.

  • Quicksilver_the_Archangel

Agreeing with Covarr – Batman's “I don't kill” policy was established in the comics long before B:TAS as well. Although he did come close a couple of times, based on varying circumstances. I'm also pretty sure he straight up shot someone not too long ago, but since I”m catching up with Booster Gold and Blue Beetle, I can't say for certain.

As for his origin as a killer of killers, all I can think of is the constantly shifting origin of Captain America. He killed a Nazi with one punch on purpose! He killed a Nazi by knocking him into technology, thus electrocuting him to death on purpose! He punched the Nazi but didn't mean to kill him! (Okay, so I may have inserted and/or forgotten a couple, but the basic idea is that he went from someone who was completely okay with killing and had an audience who would accept it to someone who wouldn't kill on purpose because, as times changed, his audience WOULDN'T accept it). So I'm guessing Bats went through the same thing.

  • Salenstormwing

Some days you CAN get rid of a bomb.

  • Salenstormwing

Well, that went better for Batman than in his first movie, where it was proved that some days you just can't get rid of a bomb.

He shot Darkside stating he's making “A once in a lifetime exception” to his no guns rule

  • CPBacon

Hey to be fair to Batman, we didn't see him put that bomb there, Maybe the villain had the bomb in his pants from earlier, since he was baking a cake and couldn't find anything else with a timer, but had forgotten to turn the timer off as he was coincidentally distracted by Batman.

That's some OJ style reasonable doubt right there.

  • Cthulhu07

    Oooh, nasty.

  • http://www.facebook.com/manuel.baudisch Manuel Baudisch

If that's the case, where did Batman's bomb go that he carried around only three seconds earlier?

Alan Moore tells you where it went “It's Magick!”

  • tiggerpete

Yeah, Tim Burton's Batman is a little out of character from the comics, since his number one rule is no killing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/manuel.baudisch Manuel Baudisch

Which was, although nobody will agree with me on this point because I'm the only person who likes Final Crisi – ever! -, an incredibly intense scene, masterfully written as well.

Me myself is more a fan of the “Pulp-Gothic-Batman” overall, I don't have a problem with Batman killing persons, or – at least – I don't care if he kills someone in order of 'collateral damage. I'm even a sucker of him wearing a gun, at least if it's explanation is valid enough. In my opinion, there are so many other things that make Batman the character that he is besides the 'non-killing-scheme'. True, trying to stop people getting killed should be his number one rule at all cost, but it's not what makes the character for me.

  • SignNinja

Well that's because Tim Burton doesn't read comic books, he said so himself. It's weird because he did 2 Batman movies with knowing the basics of Batman via popular knowledge and the TV series.

  • CPBacon

Not a bomb at all, Batman was simply concerned that his sleep schedule has been off lately, and purchased an alarm clock and the grocery store while he was there getting a pack of hotdogs for his impending barbecue. He opted not to get them in a plastic bag since Batman calls them bad for the environment. However, they were both stolen by raccoons and seagulls respectively shortly before Batman noticed a bomb in the man's pants. If Chewbacca lives on Endor you must acquit!

  • Cthulhu07

    Yeah… what.. he said :D

  • MisterWin

Is that the guy from Over The Top?

  • Jorda75

Batman doesn't use guns, a gun was what killed his parents and showed him the dark side of the world, the very instrument that orcastrated what would become the grim opera of the rest of his life. But shoving a bomb down a guys pants and throwing into the sewer? Come on that's just funny shit!

Oh on a side note when I joined a super villain as a henchman for a few weeks he already had the costumes, but we had to pay for them out of our first weeks salary and for repairs. I usually just got my mom to sew mine up for free because we got beat up a lot. When I guy calling himself Professor Weiner asks you to join up with him you should decline, no matter how good the dental plan is!

  • orangebandanna

    I've been watching Mythbusters lately..

  • alfredmordeir

Rule 1: If a guy doesn't go down after the first punch, strap a bomb to his nuts.

Rule 2: Make sure the bomb has both an alarm clock and a lit fuse attached to it, you know, because that makes sense.

Rule 3: Even if you can clearly and easily take the guy out with a second punch you are still morally justified in blowing the shit out of him

    Rule 4: WILHELM SCREAM!

The point of Batman is that he can stop crime without having to kill people. In one graphic novel he tries to rescue a girl from stepping on a land mine, she does, and he holds himself accountable.

  • lastsigma

Batman blew up a factory full of goons in the first movie. He easily killed more people than the Joker in that film.

Man I hated that scene when I first saw it, also the scene where he sets a henchman on fire using the batmobile's exhaust. I've been reading batman since the mid 70s, and none of this crap is in character for him, even DKR batman had a better code of ethics then burton's batman did.

I would have happily watched both those scenes if the protagonist was say, Deadpool, or some other character who doesn't have a well established code against killing.

  • They Call Me The Fizz

I remember being bothered by that scene even as a kid… The fact the tattooed strongman looks like Bam Bam Bigelow doesn't help matters

  • Jaebird88

For me, personally, Batman is all about solving crimes and beating up the bad guys along the way. I can't look at the Burton-Batman films the same way anymore.

  • deserteagle

You guys complaining about how Burton's Batman violated his 'code against killing' are belly-aching.

Firstly; different continuity. The film Batman is not the same as the modern comic book Batman.

Second; Burton's Batman seems more based off of the older 1940's Batman who had no qualms against killing and even used guns. The 'code against killing' was from the stupid Comic Books Code brought on by mass hysteria and ignorance.

Third; it is more realistic for a vigilante hero to dispatch his enemies in a fight then to subscribe to an idealistic philosophy. Batman could not easily beat up that goon and so took a more resorsful approach. That is how Burton's Batman acts; he sets out a missin, defeats those who oppose him, and gets the job done.

Forth; it was a badass moment. In my opinion, that alone justifies the scene here.

  • sifer2

It would seem out of place but then Batman also killed people in the first Burton film too. I know he throws that one black dude down the belltower staircase. And while he doesn't directly kill Joker he didn't really make an effort to save him either lol. Unlike the pansy Batman in the new films :P

  • Lowcifur

    WHERE ARE THEY?!

  • derangel

Burton's Batman was pretty badass, much more “real” then the moral code the comic book and Nolan Batman lives by. Burton's movies are back during a time before WB and DC were anal about what their characters did. They basically gave Burton free reign on both movies and once they became popular they decided to pussify the character and make them “family friendly”. And bring in the worst rendition of Robin ever. If I had to choice to erase the existence of one Robin and make it like he was never created and was told to pick between Damien Wayne and the movie version I'd pick the movie version, though I'd have to give it some thought first.

  • StealthKnight

  • CalebTheTimeTraveler

Thing is, Golden Age Batman is out of continuity now.

One thing I don't get, if he was against regular guns in the Recent Movie, why did his motor cycle have machine guns on it?

  • Talvrae

In the movie of Tim Burton Batman kill a lot…. but that wasnt the first time neighter there… in the firsts comics writen on Batman, he killed quite a lot and even used firearms… But later they changed that and maked him never kill anyone. Tim Burton simply wanted to bring back the time where Batman never backed on killing some criminals

  • Talvrae

Tim Burton Batman was pretty much a killer… but that wasnt the first time, the old comics books he also killed a lot of gangstars, but then they gived him the code to not kill anyone later in the comics series. It's around 1940 that he was given that code by Editor Fredric Whitney Ellsworth: Source wikipedia

As a whole, Batman Returns was a traumatic experience. I expected Batman Forever and Robin to be bad but this movie was directed by Tim Burton and I had no idea it would be that stupid. It would be awesome to see Spoony do a really long written review for this movie like he did for Anaconda and Bloodrayne: Deliverance, I mean: it's got Christopher Walken in it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-StJohn/1577010849 Michael StJohn

God I love this movie. This scene in particular. BR makes the first film look bland and forgettable by comparison. Pfeiffer's performance alone make Nicholson's seem uninspired. Walken and Devito's scene made this movie for me though. I'd take Burton's dark sense of humor over Schumacher's catch phrases, bat nipples, phallic-shaped batmobile and reinvention of Bane any day.

  • KaitBunny

And then there was that one time that Batman forgot to take his Paxil before going out to fight crime.

The ‘Batman Never Kills’ rule has been skirted many times in both comics and films.

-In the original Bob Kane/Bill Finger series he had no qualms about killing and carried a gun.

-In ‘Batman: Jekyll and Hyde’ he kills a man in self-defence by electrocuting him.

-In Tower of Babel he devises lethal countermeasures for his JLA teammates should they ever turn rogue.

-In the comic storyline where Ra’s Al Ghul dies, Batman does everything he can to ensure his death short of killing him with his own hands.

-In Final Crisis he shoots Darkseid with a Radion bullet with every intention of killing him(though Superman and Flash have to pitch in to finish the job).

And even in Nolan’s movies, there’s the time where:

-He blew up a temple, killing several ninjas along with the criminal he refused to execute.

-He left Ra’s Al Gul to die in a train crash that he engineered.

-He throws Harvey Dent over the side of a building and kills him.

    • Jayden Reynolds

Dent didn’t die in TDK, you could see him still breathing.

  • http://twitter.com/SheepinRevolt The Laughing Man

Right off the bat (haha) Batman killed at least 2 guys every comic appearance. He kicked one of Doctor Death’s goons in the head snapping his neck, he threw a jewel thief off of a roof to his death, he pushed Arthur Stryker into a vat of acid intending to kill him but spawning the joker, he even lit Doctor Death on fire intending to kill him (he only scarred him but roasted a henchman alive. Batman just sucks at follow through.).
