Late-night ramblings on Wrestlemania and Final Fantasy XIII.

    Geez, FFXIII sounds bad…

I actually like FFX’s sphere grid. I thought it was a nice balance between getting any abilities a la materia/GFs, and having character specific stuff, since with the key spheres each character can branch to other characters’ paths.

Ah I love Terry Pratchett audiobooks! best thing in the world to listen to when going for runs, although people see me smiling and don’t understand why :D

Regarding Final Fantasy XIII: I have to agree almost to every point. I am so utterly disappointed by the game, my hopes for versus 13 are gone by now. However I still like it more than FF12 because for me story and characters are most imoportant. FF13 got far better characters (They actually got reasons to be around….I am looking at you Vaan) and a (slightly) betters story which however still has so unbelievably much wasted potential.

The best next-gen Jrpgs so far are Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata.

I agree with you on the wrestling, and you make really good points.

    Sweet!

  • jewbagel

I was wondering when another vlog would pop up.

Apparently about FFXIII, it gets better after 25-30 hours “or so”. I really wanted to like it too, but it's just bad. Like ZP mentioned, taking that long to get interesting it just poor storytelling. Before with 8-12, I think I was in denial about truly giving up on the series that shaped most of my childhood gaming. 13, you have the honour of making it official!

fancy glas of water you got there.

also, did you play Tales of Symphonia? The graphic is not so good but the story is a personal favourite of mine.

  • edinfang

Love how you say that you arent gona go on about wrestling then go on about it for 5 mins anyway >.< feel sorry for you having to buy the games like FF13 just to review on how shitty they are

  • http://www.facebook.com/dimitrios.papadimitriou1 Dimitrios Papadimitriou

Aww common can't you bitch about wrestling at least once a month. I can't seem to get enough of you bashing on impact, and I've never even watched impact.

  • mwong04

I didn't exactly see any Gay points with Sherlock Holmes. But what I did see is that Watson is bi curious

  • KiiWii

ZP totally nailed it for me too. I have some friends that are on the second playthrough of this game, to consider such a thing is freaking unholy. I stopped playing about 30 hours in, when i realised that i'd wasted 30 hours of my life, and even if i finished it, it would just be more wasted hours on top of that. Fuck this game.

  • Dorran844221

I agree with you about XIII. I'm not even nearly as far into it as you are, but I'm getting the same sense. This thing has not only a railroad plot, but a railroad layout. I mean, hell, you literally start out the game on a railroad. It took me about half an hour to think to myself “You know, that's an apt metaphor for this game.” I have no problem with a storyline that's linear. I'd rather have one compelling storyline in a game than half a dozen mediocre story lines to chose from. It's the linearity of the layouts that gets me. Part of Final Fantasy ( to me ) has always been the sense of being able to explore and discover interesting things. That kind of thing really helps to build up the world and make you feel like it's something worth saving, even if it is full of nameless NPCs who say random lines when you talk to them or even just stand there taking up space. As for the game mechanics and graphics, I'd agree, they're really great. I don't have so much of a problem with the crystarium ( yet ), but I can definitely see what your qualms with it are. At least it doesn't need stupid little spheres to progress along. Still, I would be just as if not more happy with a straight-up level system. Also, I agree about the codex issues. You shouldn't feel like you've got homework to do while you're playing a game! Some things can get away without too much exposition down time by explaining things bit by bit as they go along ( case and point, Shoot 'Em Up ), but with something as involved as a Final Fantasy, you -need- those exposition down-times to understand everything that's going on.
Anyways, I'm pretty big on Audible too. I've had it for… what… three and a half years now at least, and it's a great way to get audiobooks. My main problem is that I'm a slow reader, but I can keep up with audiobooks just fine. I also agree with you about abridged audiobooks, I just refuse to touch them. I'm not spending my money and listener credits on them!

  • thehenryspock

Wait… you're off the wrestling? Hallelujah.

Nice vlog (once I skipped to about 7:55) ;)

  • the_knez

90 minutes?! I can beat Nyx in 20 minutes solo in my first playthrough save :D
I don't get how you couldn't beat P3 if you beat Nocturne, now that's a sadistic game.

  • Minic

Not that it's of dire importance – I mean, I still love the movie despite what anyone says – but how much of the Ferris Bueller review was true for you?

  • alexturan

    Hey.
So the first thing, I'm 10 h into the game and I totally agree with you. All this story is just confusing and with just no choices thats its painful for me to play. But about Snow. It ridiculus that he punch 10 tons of metal robots in the face and wining this with smile. But its kind of miracle about powers of ours heroes that we should just past. He's like Tifa. And every character in every game have this 'wonder' about one special power. Hes is that punching…

Second, your vlogs are long as hell, and two of them would do a movie :D

Third, what was rpgs on xbox 360 that in your opinions are good? I'm serching for something good to buy. Though that FFXIII would be good but you know for yourself. I also played Tales of Vesperia and it was good one. Anything more you can rocommend?

  • Sidstyler

Even if they did finally remake FF7 they would find some way to screw it up, like all the FF7 spin-offs they've done so far.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ViperXX79 Thomas Lee Cook

You're the reason I started watching TNA. I stopped watching wrestling after WCW lost it's luster, never been a WWF/E fan, so when I saw your vlog about hogan and the founding members of the NWO were together again I had to tune in. Now I'm hooked. Thanks a lot Spoony.

  • laz1985

i played final fantasy xiii for 1 hour then put vii back in

  • brassherald

I have a friend who claims that FFXIII is awesome, this same friend has said that 7 was the starting point for the greatest string of games in this series, so I knew it was not worth 60 dollars then, this just reaffirms it, who the hell would waste 20-25 hours before getting to a good point of the game? If you have a busy schedule thats about 2 weeks playing. Why would I buy a game for entertainment 2 weeks later?

  • mattmcpwn

I couldn't agree more about 13, you just threw everything I was thinking onto the table.
I know that you provide this site and it's content for free and I love 95% of everything you've done, but I couldn't be happier to hear that you're giving Doctor Insano a rest. My GOD does that character piss me off.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Mishstein Mish Stein

everything you make is gold.. keep up the great work..

  • whatislove

wow you are amazing bro, I wish I was as cool as you.

  • Olivaw

Final Fantasy 12 WAS pretty good, Spoony. Don't let no one tell you otherwise.

Also, if you're thirteen hours in, I'm not even sure if you're out of the tutorial area yet! From what I've heard, this game is the slowest paced game in the history of all video games. And I don't know if there's ever an overworld or any opportunity to explore at all. So I guess don't count on that, either!

  • camisado

Nice video Spoony, I'm glad your planning on cutting back on the wrestling videos a little bit, I was enjoying them but they were beginning to wear a little thin.

On Final Fantasy XIII, I'm suprised you didn't even really touch on the combat system, or lack of really.

  • bloodhowl

Even though Dragon Age: Origins has the same thing with miles of text to explain things. It's not essential to read it to get what is going on and the characters in that game will explain stuff to you if you just ask them. And they are all likeable in their own way. I personally haven't played FFXIII, because I got warned by friends and critics to stay away from it. Oh, and im so relieved to hear that the gunbladed is making an apperance again, cause we needed that. ;D And when it comes to the character Hope. I saw in the trailers that this asshole was going to be the angsty, complaining emo douche for the game. And say what you will about FFX, at least Auron was awesome. He carried that game for me. I could tolerate Tidus, Wakka and Yuna and their retardedness as long as Auron was with me.

    • http://twitter.com/Anaphyis Anaphyis

I never once read the Codex in Dragon Age, never had any reason or inclination to. In FFXIII, this isn’t an option. If you don’t read it it’s like watching a movie in a foreign language you don’t understand.

As for Hope: To be fair, he has far more legit reasons to be emo and angsty then let’s say Squall and he actually goes through quite a bit of character development. But I felt the same dread of “oh no, not the Square’s typical androgynous emo bitch” when he first showed up.

Snow is actually one of the characters I like more in FFXIII.
Yeah he punches shit, but who cares. He has magic emblems on his gloves I don't know if that would justify it for you though.
It doesn't really bother me. Ha gunblades. I like them. Sorry ):

I agree with most of the problems and characters though.

Hearing you talk about Arthur Conan Doyle and audiobooks made me curious to know more about what kind of books you read. If you ever find the time it would be cool to see a vlog on your favorite authors and books! No hurry though, I guess you have quite a lot on your to do-list pretty much always. But, yeah, that'd be cool!

Man, I sunk over 90 hours into Persona 4 (but don't flip out, I did kind of overlevel too much and there were periods I just left the PS2 on and walked away). It's a long game too, but it is a lot of fun. In fact I just started a new cycle game, which is essentially a New Game + kind of deal. You don't get character levels, but yen, social stats (which helps a lot), and your Persona Compendium (which helps even more) carries over.

Upon starting a new game of it I realized my biggest beef is that it also takes awhile to get going. There's nearly two hours before your first tutorial fight. But at least shit happens in those two hours, you're left a little confused but it's confusion over the mystery over what's going on in the narrative, not because the game isn't filling you in on stuff you wouldn't know.

Try not to spoil yourself on the end of the story if you can.

If they are going to remake ff7, you know they are just gonna fuck it up right? I mean, Advent Children pretty much sums up what we could expect from a FF7 remake. Square-Enix has headed down a path for their games in terms of how characters are going to be, how their stories are going to be told and how their gameplay will be so the days of the old FF games are long gone and will most likely never be back.

I was a huge FF fan up untill 7. I love every FF game up to 7. They told a decent fantasy story in a gripping way and what is most important, the GAMEPLAY was very fun aswell. For everything you can point out that is wrong with 7, gameplay wise it is one of the best, maybe even the best, FF game in terms of sheer good solid gameplay. There was so much stuff to do in that game and so nicely designed.

FF8 was a really hit or miss game. I appreciate what they tried to do, but really, it felt like they just rushed it and came out with a game that was like only 75% pollished. The story had some nice points, but for the most part it is the first example and one of the best of everything that is wrong with all the FF stories after 7. It is incoherent, it is badly told and it is so stupid at times. I've read fanfaction that was better written. Oh and the characters..god.. and that was what their direction for characters was going to be ever since. Altho, 8 still had a few very powerfull scenes and moments. The point where you are drifting through space and think you are going to die by running out of oxygen with no hope of resque. And then all of a sudden you find this abandoned spaceship and it's full of monsters. Yeah, Scifi movie cliche but it was a very cool moment. Worst part of FF8 tho was the gameplay. Way to make fighting pointless, or make item/equipment hunting unsatisfying/non-existant

I played FF9 right after 8 and at the time I hated it. I hated the characters. But looking back, the characters are mostly more likeable then 8 and they are more uniqe to with unique abillities etc. And the items and equipment in 9 was also varied and satisfying. There WAS equipment and they all had uniqe effects. So, gameplay wise 9 was a nice throwback to the old games aswell. But for the most part it still only feels like a half serious nod at the old classics instead of a really good game on it's own merit.

Anything after FF9 I just hate hate hate. Nonsensical bullshit stories told in an incompetent manner with bullshit emo characters dressed like anime rejects with bullshit hardos and girly faces overacting like acting school dropouts.. And they supposedly go for realism in those later games.. And the gameplay is just horrible in them. I mean, here we have a company with such a rich history of games, of story telling, character development and gameplay design they can draw from. Yet it is like they completely ignore all that and go on to make fanfiction.

That sums up my feeling best I think for the latter stuff: fanfiction. Like it was written by totally new guys who just ignore everything a series was, throw out all the stuff that was good about it and just keep focussing on their personal fetishes. And all the blind fanboys gobble it up because “It's Final Fantasy!”

“Wall of text crits you for 6580 points damage!”

There is nothing like the Final Fantasy series and what it has become to get me fired up in rambling mode.. and not in a good way sadly.

    Your Vlogs are gold.

  • droge085

What did you think of Crisis Core?

  • mikaoj

Spoony, I just wanted to let you know that the game does not get better. See, I actually stuck with it. I played through all of it. It was bad, but I kept playing with that “maybe it gets better” thought clinging in my mind.

Here's my main problem: I was 40 hours in, thinking “this is gonna be the half-way point like in FFVI, righ? Where the game starts being “decent” and begins being “fucking amazing”, right?” Wrong. It fucking ended. And I was like… I don't even know who the fuck the antagonist was supposed to be! Was it that Pope Bart dude? What the fuck, this game sucks balls.

And here's my other main complaint; it's just too goddamn short. It's on three discs for fuck's sake – that means more than 40 fucking hours. Final Fantasy VI lasted me 80 on my first playthrough. The majority of the last hours are just boss fight after boss fight after boss fight. And as you said, the battle system is really rather good, but you're gonna get SO tired from all these fucking bosses.

It's just terrible. Anyone reading this: Play any RPG other than this. Play Dragon Age: Origins. Play EarthBound. Hell, play Tetris. Anything but this uninspired piece of shit nonsense RPG.

Lightning was hot, though. I'll give it that.

Anyone looking at Alpha Protocol? At PAX East they were talking about it in a talk called “But Thow Must.” I can't wait for a port.

  • Vlane

Spoony I agree with you on Final Fantasy XIII.

I am currently right before the final boss, about 45 hours in I think and I haven't touched the game for 3 weeks because it's just boring. I forced myself through the whole game up to that point and I won't finish this game, I don't want to finish it. This game is the first game where I said “Fuck this, I quit.”. And the worst part is that it's not THAT bad, it's terrible but I finished worse games. The fighting system is very fun and it does require some amount of strategy but that doesn't save the game for me.

  • Threque

Good example of story making the game: Mass Effect 1. Honestly, there were key decisions to be made, but many of the conversational options led to the same lines being spoken, with no adjustment to renegade or paragon score. The combat, the Mako, those became repetitive even before the second playthrough. What caused most people to play through it again? The story and depth of the created galaxy.

Square needs to remember that the story is why we loved Final Fantasy, or else the series just needs to die.

  • Jaebird88

The one thing I hope for, and this will be a once in a lifetime wish, is that Square-Enix will have the common sense to realize that they need to go back to the old games in terms of setting and story. I mean, the only reason FF13 sold is because it's another Final Fantasy title, and people eat that stuff up. Slap “Final Fantasy” on a goat and have it wear a spiky-hair wig, and I bet you the raving fanboys will want that goat.

I keep going back to Final Fantasy IX every time I think about Final Fantasy, because that was a great game with simple mechanics and a decent story. Hell, when I think Final Fantasy, I don't think about FF7 or any of the other sci-fi-themed entries. It's all about the medieval fantasy setting with elements of steampunk mixed in.

But as much as I enjoyed FF9, I'm not saying Square should retain that old formula of two rows of people parallel from another, playing red rover. I like how the battle system is set up for FF13, and how the characters and monsters move about on the screen. I agree with Spoony when he says they should innovate. We got a few decent things out of FF13 at the sacrifice of plot and common sense, in my opinion.

…Man, I just realized how long I've been writing this post for, and now I have to go to work :P

  • pharaoh025

I agree when you say it's been enough wrestling talk but man, if they're bringing back folks from the 80s, you need to keep watching, coz I wanna see a vlog where the Spoony One announces the return of The Utimate Warrior!!!

Seriously, I won't miss the wrestling talk, but I did like it when you did it.

“…because the audience, like Titus, knows SHIT”. That line just made me laugh, something about the way you said it, I dunno, just funny!

Regarding RPGs, how's the Knightmare stuff coming? Lest I be mistaken, the Gatecleaner sentenced you to reviewing the entire saga, or face eternal damnation in the Blagole… so how goes it?

  • ZC3

I think if it takes longer than a day's worth of playing a fucking video game then as a developer you really need to hire some new people to write your games. That's ridiculous. Glad I didn't buy it.

And yeah, Wrestlemania was a huge disappointment. I'd just watch ROH and CHIKARA if I were you.

  • http://twitter.com/MetalheroDamien Damien Carey

Two things. One, did they ever rescue Samoa Joe from the ninjas? I enjoyed twelve, the story was fun, great character and visuals. Only reason I never finished twelve was that I got stuck between Dr. Cid and the area behind him, in that I couldn't go back to level up and I couldn't beat Dr. Cid at the level I was at…It was fun otherwise though. How many other games can you play as a Playboy Bunny Girl with built in High heels?

I haven’t played FF13, and truthfully, I never had any desire to. After Final Fantasy 7, everything kinda went downhill. I liked 12, it in my opinion being the best Final Fantasy since 6 (I didn’t really care for 7), but I recognized that it was basically a fluke, and Square-Enix is pretty much done. I never cared for the persona series myself, or really anything in the Shin Megami Tensai series. I just never thought they were particularly good games. But all this crap that’s going on with FF13, well, I heard a wise man once say that the more words you have to invent for your fantasy, the worse the fantasy is. This has been universally true with every fantasy game and movie I’ve ever seen. A few words here and there is okay, but seriously.

Okay, well, you go and get rest, Spoony. Out of everything you’ve done over the past years, you deserve it. I check back on this site nearly every day, but I can wait, and so can everyone else, even if they don’t say it. Or believe it. You put out quality stuff, and while I don’t think that’ll change, I know that you put everything you have into this site and I want to see it continue strong and not fall apart because you work yourself to death. Peace out.

The point of abridged books in audio form is to hear a man crying instead of listening to a guy say, “Help me” he sobbed.

    Good stuff man. Huge fan.

  • specterm91

You did get Resonance of Fate? Fuck yeah! I emailed you about it as soon as you mentioned FFXIII. You're gonna love it, man. I dunno how you'll like the story, it isn't all that deep, but it's funny, the characters are likable (Vashyron in particular), and the battle system alone will have you entertained. Shit ton of side missions and optional fights, too. Warning you, though, it's hard as fuck. I mean REALLY fucking hard. I've heard it called the Ninja Gaiden of RPGs.

  • MasterTalon

The thing of XIII is that it is highly linear it is until the end part of the game. One complaint I read of about XII (though it didn't bother me) was it was too open, so SE fixed that with this one. But the enemies you fight in the optional stuff usually you wanna fight at the end of the game anyway after you've level grinded.

However, one thing that should please the Spoony One is that in this futuristic setting…they use guns! *gasps!* Plus they use the Summons to save people and fight in the story, not just gameplay, but they worked the summon power into the story parts. And the Crystatium is pretty much a 3D Sphere Grid.

  • Xevv

I gotta agree with the linearity, but even considering that, I gotta say that FFXIII is probably my favorite FF since 9, but all the characters get some character developement and by the end, I think they are all pretty likeable. Even hope who at first was seriously annoying, was one of my favorite character by the end.

Also, the story wasn't so bad either.

  • Eener101

They use guns, except the guns are all loaded with plot ammo. One time you are figthing a squad of soldiers with machine guns and the bullets only slightly faze your party. Or when your fighting an airship armed with vulcan cannons and your oarty takes hit after hit with no problem whatsoever, destroying the thing by repeatedly hitting it with a sword and their fucking fists.

But as soon as a cutscene starts, one bullet is all it takes to kill someone.

*SPOILER* The Focus is explained to the characters by good ol' Dysley, so you get that done too. The thing is, the stuff happens that explains alot of the stuff.

I loved Sherlock Homes! I had the same impression as you; I thought it;d just be some detective movie or something dumb like Scooby Doo, but when I went to see it, it instent;y became one of my favorite movies and I was very surprised.
I liked how Homes was a kind of asshole everyone just puts up with because he's so good at what he does, and his friend Wattson is his friend for a long time but tries to pretend like he doesn't like homes, and then he has the girlfriend that Homes is also mean to.
I think the main reason I liked this movie so much between it reminded me of House, except in England. Wattson's even a doctor. But I love Dr House, I home Sherlock Homes, and I love it when Homes throws the hammer at the big Russian guy.

As much as I liked that comedic scene, it didn't settle with me. Homes is really smart, and he knocked that big guy back with a zapper thingy, and he still got up. I can't imagine him throwing a hammer like that at a big brute and think it'll work, or even think the guy couldn't smack the hammer back and catch Homes between the eyes. Maybe it's a heat of battle type of thing.
You see a scorpion, you think “Danger!” and scream and run away. Someone else would be like “Bug! Squish!” and step on it, get stung, and die.
Homes would probably pick it up with ease, put it in a jar, and do experiments on it.

Well, of course it reminds you of Dr. House. The Sherlock Holmes movie is pretty close to the original novels. The earlier movies really took so much liberty with the characters – like Watson being a bumbling idiot as Spoony pointed out – that the popular image of Holmes has nothing to with the original source material.

House on the other hand is written pretty close to the original Holmes as well. Holmes – House; Watson – Wilson; Holmes being a cocaine addicted borderline sociopath when not solving a case and even the subtle gay vibe between Holmes/Watson or House/Wilson.

While FFXIII does have its flaws I still enjoy it. I agree completely that they don't gradually introduce you to the setting and rely too much on the datalog. And it is very, almost entirely linear for the first 10 chapters. Chapter 11 (where I am now) is very different and feels more like traditional FF, a big wide area that you can explore and do optional sidequests.

Much like FFX the “freedom” of the leveling system is intended mainly for the end game, when you can theoritically max out your character to insane degree. Though admittedly I doubt I will bother that much, and I'm the one who likes the game. As it is though I find it fun to fill in the bubbles on my own far more then getting a Dragon Quest styled “Taloon has leveled up. He receives +13 HP, +2 STR, +1 DEF” as it creates a level of interactivity to gaining your stats rather then just being told “Hey you're .5% more awesome then you were a minute ago. It's an illusion of choice, sure, but one I slightly prefer.

Oh and leveling your weapons is worthwhile, even for guys like Hope because you'll notice it doesn't just raise the stats of your strength but of magic as well. If you're not leveling Hope's weapon you're leaving him at a serious disadvantage. Though I agree that the weapon leveling system is flawed and not nearly as interesting as it should be.

I'm not saying you should love it, and I understand that if you aren't having fun now you should probably just leave it rather then continue to the play on the notion that you “might” have more fun later on but I am enjoying and enjoyed it pretty much from the start.

In my opinion I think that 13′s just too goddamn slow. I don’t really know what I think of it yet, but it just needs to get a move on.

Also, in Persona 4, probably a million people have told you this but there’s one point where you are going to 100% need an FAQ, and its not during combat. Make a second save around the in-game months of March or May (I forget which one it was), you’ll be very glad you did.

  • greatleslie

ya im playing resonance of fate right now as well over XIII but i think the implausibility of the customization system might drive you more nuts then the gunblade did, but if you do get into it the best advice i could give is to master the tri-attack system and grenades rape early on.

If you like RPGs, you should play an old PS1 game called “Legend of Dragoon” if you haven't picked it up already. It plays like FF& (so I've heard, I've never played FF7)

Ugg, sooo many degrees of agree; with everything you said.

I bought FF13, the day it came out, and any hope for the game died at the 10 hour mark… I'm still trying to beat it, mostly because I'm hoping that the endgame makes up for it, but judging by the comments, that sounds unlikely (Though the second to last paragraph of mikeaoJ's post makes me smile). The only thing I have to say is I liked Lightning too, back when she was beating up Snow and threatening to kill her sister for being a L'Cie, but once she realized she was becoming too likable, and droped the 'beating up the annoying twats' part of her, and instead became a moping emo twat, basically becoming the kind of character I used to love seeing her beat up.

However, despite all the disappoint from FF13… I am optimistic for Nier, an RPG by Square-Enix coming out on the 27th, mostly because it has a simple story (guy is looking for cure to plague that his daughter caught), and it uses real-time fighting, something that worked well in Kingdom Hearts for Square. So, though FF is pretty much dead, at least Square may go on to still make decent RPGs.

I don't see you as the “Final Fantasy rage guy”, Spoony. While those reviews are fun, it's like you said: They just stopped being good up to 7.
I see you as the PC FMV gamer guy, because it seems that's where you're in your element.

At the expense of college and significant other time, I dedicated the full 80+ hours to getting every achievement in Final Fantasy XIII. 80 hours I could stand to get back… Though I still don’t think the reward was worth it (because essentially, it was an extremely slow rail shooter) I felt that the characters, the plot and the battle system were worth experiencing if only for a little while.

You seem to be really into the old turn based rpgs spoony, just thought I’d ask but how did you feel about games like Fallout and Oblivion? Another poster also mentioned that they would love to see you say a few words about your favorite console games and I happen to agree.

Some good psx games to check out (if you haven’t already) : Legend of Dragoon (someone already mentioned it), Xenogears, Beyond the Beyond, Wild Arms, Vagrant Story and Vandal Hearts (the first one only heh).

    Keep up the great work!

I find it somewhat ironic that you are saying that you would not make the “best” mage in the game a commando even if you have the choice, yet you harped on 8 where you had total control over how you spent your points. AS you said in your video it would make more sense for Squall to be a better melee fighter than the girls but if the player allocates the spells properly it dosen't matter.

  • witheringsanity

i didn't see any comments addressing this, but i really like dr insano as a support character! while i wouldn't want him to have his own show, he adds alot to the spoony exp and his absence would be heartbreaking. i just didn't want you to see ONE comment about insano and it be that “he's so annoying” one. he's not annoying, he's funny as hell. kepp up the good work spoondawg.

oh yeah and i just started playing ff13 two days ago… and yeah it sucks. no matter how much i WANT to like it… it sucks. and the battle system is terrible, IMHO.

  • http://bluehighwind.blogspot.com/ BlueHighwind

Well, FFXIII looks like its going to suck. I don't know if I'm even going to get it now because every little bit of info I hear about it just makes it sound worse. “Imagine FFX, doing everything it did wrong, just ten times worse.” What in the world was so wrong with FFXII's style that we had to make a huge sudden break from everything it did? Because the “fans” complained? The fans always complain! They hate everything! That's what being a “fan” is all about: hating everything.

Seriously, is there any reason to play this game?

  • snake219

I've never played Final Fantasy so I can't really comment on whether the series is good or bad as a whole. FF VIII looked pretty awful and X doesn't look any better but as for the rest I have no clue. One thing I will say though about XIII is why? WHY does the game go on for MORE THAN 25 HOURS? People complain about games like Modern Warfare 2 being too short, but man! One comment on here said that the game clocks up to about 45 HOURS! I could never last that long, let alone 25 hours, unless the game had an excellent story, well-defined and likeable characters and great game play. According to Spoony this game has none of those and you know what? I don't think I will get into FF. I like RPG's like Oblivion, Knights of the Old Republic and Fallout 3 but I don't think I could muster the patience for FF.
Anyway great video Spoony, looking forward to more excellent work from you. By the way I was wondering what are your thoughts on the upcoming Splinter Cell Conviction? I'm a big fan of the series and it would be nice to see your take on it.

“WHY does the game go on for MORE THAN 25 HOURS? People complain about games like Modern Warfare 2 being too short, but man!”

There’s something specious about what you said here. I dunno if you pointed out MW2 purposely but the story in those games aren’t told like jrpgs. In jrpgs the story is told completely through click-through dialog and part of the reason they are so long is because that’s comparable to your average book. Audio books are a great way to clock the time you could spend reading, in general. What made jrpgs worth the money in the old days was that you were constantly in control. Modern day platforms have eroded this to the point where we’re watching more than exploring or playing some mini-game, while leaving the more boring aspects not unlike click-through dialog and traveling, with no reward in storytelling.

I've beaten Persona 3 and you're right: Nyx takes forever to beat. I was amazed that I managed to beat it the first time and it took me an hour just to beat Nyx and then I began yelling at my TV, “HOW MUCH LONGER IS THIS GAME?!” The ending also annoyed me a little. It felt like a “Congrats. You managed to beat this game in one go. The main character worked his ass off for this happy ending. Now… FUCK YOU! HAHAHA!” I don't want to give away what happens to the main character at the end since I don't want to spoil it but I was just all, “Really game? That's sad…”

And I suggest to you Spoony that you avoid The Answer, which is the second part of Persona 3. You thought The Journey was hard? Well, multiply the difficulty by ten and return all characters/personas to level 3. You can't use any of the personas you had made in The Journey and you don't get to keep any of your weapons. The Answer is just impossible (at least for me it was) and I never even managed to pass the first boss.

  • witheringsanity

hopefully replies get sent to you, and no, there isn't much reason to play 13. it's not as BAD as it is soul crushing. because it's so damn pretty, and well acted by some characters… it makes you realize how good it could have been, if they didn't try to dumb it down to damn much. 13 could have been the next great final fantasy, but it's a mash of new ideas that just utterly fail. it's not a “bad” game, it's more like an “ok” game, but it's a terrible “final fantasy”.

    • http://bluehighwind.blogspot.com/ BlueHighwind

Seems that nobody else replied. I still don’t know if I’ll even get this game, which is absolutely crazy coming from me. I’ve played every single main series Final Fantasy game so far (except XI). I even editing a Final Fantasy Wiki for two years. And yet still, STILL, I’m really wavering on whether or not this game is worth even a try.

There’s so much that it doesn’t have going for it: FPS linear world design, 15 hour learning curve, very few sidequests, no freedom, and Snow. Maybe I should just play FFXII again…

  • pharaoh025

This comment has no relation to the vlog, but I figure I gotta find a place to say it…(well, there's somewhat of a link, since I've thought of it after you said no more wrestling talk…)

I just wanted to say, even though there won't be any more wrestling talk, you gotta find a way to keep your Ultimate Warrior character!! You gotta keep using that somehow!!!

    Who's with me?

  • http://www.saisasylum.com/ Sai

Hahaaa, I've finally started reading Terry Pratchett myself. Actually, two really good made-for-TV discworld movies are on Netflix instant play (Colour of Magic and The Hogfather), if you haven't already you should check them out. They are AWESOME. Apparently they're releasing one based on Going Postal this year.

I kinda new FF13 was gonna suck, Squeenix is more about style than substance now. And I hate the style too.

The way I see it, Final Fantasy 13 is like what people ripped on with Fable. But at least Fable was fun to play, and you weren't limited to one town, you could go to Oakvale the second you get out of the Guild. Not to mention I personally liked Fable's storyline and I enjoy playing it repeatedly in the Summer like I do with Oblivion. Final Fantasy…pretty much all of them I've never liked from the start. I didn't get far in X before just downright quitting, and I didn't really get into VII, maybe one day the makers will get smart. Then again they only made two Kingdom Hearts and made 13 of these FF's.

i totally agree with you about final fantasy 13.

with the FFXIII not giving exposition, it's a bit like playing Dragon age in that regard, unless you read EVERY piece of text you're given you know nothing about the world

    • http://twitter.com/Anaphyis Anaphyis

You can easily get through Dragon Age satisfied without ever opening the Codex. You learn enough through basic storytelling and the dialog options of your companions. The codex itself is just an optional source of lore if you want to immerse yourself deeper into the setting or to answer certain questions that you might have but which have no impact in your understanding of the setting and story itself. Same deal with Mass Effect really. Say what you will about the later BioWare games but giving you enough information through basic exposition to not only understand the premise but be immersed in the setting AND providing additional entirely optional lore is one of their strong points.

As for other JRPGs, the only series I remember with a similarly amount of text walls was Xenosaga. And even these games manage to make them entirely optional despite being one of the most complex and mindfuck-prone scifi series on the planet.

As a FF fan whose soul aches every time you rag on anything but that which is post-FFX, I'm with you on your comments regarding XIII – at least mostly. I think it is a vast improvement over XII because to me FF is about story being > gameplay, and XII's story was an even bigger waste of my time than BioShock 2. So yeah, you have to dig and really work to make sense out of FFXIII's story, but that is at the very least a step up from having to all but imagine one exists like you had to do in FFXII.

Don't get me wrong, it was still mediocre at BEST. Comparing it to IV – VI, VII – IX, or to X is insulting to any one of those titles. That said, it's gotta be the best FF related thing that Square has produced since dropping the 'soft' and picking up the Enix, which as you said, is more sad than anything else.

I read the Hogfather, watched someone play the game (I think it's called disc world: it glitched the first time, and it was pretty far in too, so it was some time before I sat though the entire game) but I'm not yet a fan. I like the stuff, but I have no idea were to start, otherwise I just reread The hitchhikers guides books, ( yes even the new one by Colfer, I've read some of his stuff too so it wasn't really a bother to me.)

Announcements! I can't wait, Hopefully nothing bad or disappointing. Of course you sound pretty excited about them yourself so I suspect that they may be entertaining if not good.

  • linksocarina

You got to finish Persona 4 dude.

And if you do, it would be cool to see a final review of it, or at least a final V-Log.

  • DrProsec

I never read any of the texts you were given in DA:O, and I never came close to feeling confused. FF13, on the other hand, acts like a sequel that I missed the prequel for, and despite reading every bit of text other than the stuff that explains the combat, I still often find myself lost. Maybe I just had an easier time with DA:O over FF13, but to compare the necessity of reading the text in DA:O and FF13 just doesn't work.

  • Hoiness

I remember seeing Resonance of Fate when I went to Best Buy today and it made me wonder how good it is. Maybe you can give your opinion on it sometime? As for FF XIII, I heard that it's good only after hours of gameplay and that's the reason I don't really want to get it. Maybe after the price drops…

  • jewbagel

I would disagree, the stuff in DAO was completely optional in your understanding of the basic plot. It was for the diehard completest who wanted to learn about all the fables and past history of the world. But you were told the plot straight up, you grasped the world around you easily, for the most part.

  • taranaich

Whooooaaa ho ho ho, there Spoony: Conan Doyle “just pulp fiction”? Let's not be hasty here: sure, Conan Doyle wrote his share of lesser stories, but the same can be said for just about every other author in the world. An author, or any artist, is judged on his best work, and at his best, Conan Doyle was one the very greatest mystery/crime authors of modern times, not to mention his fantastic historical fiction and monumentally influential adventure stories.

Besides, just because an author wrote for the pulps doesn't have any impact on their qualities as a writer: Twain, Conrad, Hammett, Chandler, Vance, London, and many other authors who have literary respectability were pulp authors.

Now, as for “picking and choosing” Holmes stories, I'd certainly agree: nonetheless, two of the very best stories have Holmes engaging in (or at least alluding to) ass-kickery. “The Sign of Four” has Holmes mentioning his fisticuffs prowess to a bareknuckle boxer. The best example is probably “The Red-Headed League,” where Holmes lays the smackdown with his cane and a riding crop.

Still, I shred your reservations regarding the film, but more for RDJ's lack of cleanliness and womanising ways, which were a lot more un-Holmesian to me.

  • malestrithe

I am amazed that you still can find things to bitch about after 5 months of this kind of torture. I thought that you would get immune to the pain by now. I stopped watching wrestling on a full time basis about a decade ago.

You really should watch Ring of Honor, at least the stuff that came after Cornette took over the book last year. Instead of being spotfests, marathon matches, and that hardcore crap they did originally, it now feels like the correct balance of high energy and psychology that I normally get watching Lucha Libre on univision.

Sure, it still has spots, but now there is an emphasis on basic ring psychology. When the spots take place, it is not done to impress the people. Now, there is some in match meaning to them.

  • JeanJacket

Your Holmes review = Win. I had essentially the same reaction to it. “Fuuuuuuck, they're gonna ruin it… Oh hey, this is pretty cool, Watson's smart, WHY THE FUCK IS IRENE ADLER A LOVE INTEREST, oh, must be to distract us from the fact that Holmes is acting like a dumped boyfriend now that Watson's getting married.”

The thing about a bad game that inspires hate is that hate is still an emotion whereas a game that inspires boredom fails to even elicit an emotion. In that respect, a game like FFVIII that makes me rage is still a better game than FFIX which bored me to tears. I'd rather be sentenced to an eternity of triple triad hell than play one hour of the choco-mog dig game in FFIX which literally made me go to sleep from pure boredom. A hot cold dig game? What the hell were you thinking Squarenix? Hate means you still cared but were dissapointed whereas boredom means you don't care at all. If FFXIII is anywhere near that level of bordeom I don't ever want to play it. There is nothing worse than playing a game that you are bored of.

  • TomeOne

I wonder if you would criticize Sabin in FF3/6 for doing pretty much the same thing as Snow does in 13. Hell, you even posted about the video where Sabin suplexes the train and said Sabin was a badass for using his bare hands.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Blayney/683346875 Michael Blayney

My guess is no, as it's still plausible (in video game logic) for a dude to fight with claws when everyone else has a melee weapon of some sort.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Blayney/683346875 Michael Blayney

Final Fantasy as a series lost me somewhere towards the end of 8 when I realized that A) even with a strategy guide I fucking hated Triple Triad, and B) I had *no* idea what the fuck I was doing in a compressed timeline. I haven't played one since, and frankly I don't think I've missed out on anything. It takes more than pretty pictures and gigantic tits to entice me to play a game.

  • Kirzan

It doesn't get better Spoony, that's coming from someone who gave up after getting all trophies but the CRAZY BORING ones. SPOILER (kinda but not really) Chapter 11 you get this huge ass zone that takes like 5-10 minutes to run from side to side… it's like a Hallway Hub… many hallways connected to this huge zone, and you're like wow finally I can run around. Trust me, 40% of the trophies, and I'm not kidding, you spend in this one zone, killing 3 different types of monsters. Behemoth/Big lion thing (a spot which is best to grind CP) and TURTLES.

Every, single, trophy, past the storyline and missions, are about killing fucking turtles. I gave up… 20 hours past the ending of killing turtles did it for me, and I had about 40 more hours to do, killing turtles. Those fucking turtles man, SquareEnix put every single item you need past the storyline (which is 2 items) on ONE type of monster, and that's turtles. To make the best weapons, you need a certain item. Sold at 2mil gil or rare dropped from TURTLES. Thing is, those turtles are tough, toughest mobs in the game. So what? to get the best weapons, I need to kill the toughest type of monster… YEAH! Makes sense right SquareEnix, thank you for sucking so much.

  • urza22000

I'll still rent FF13 just to try it out and see how it goes for myself even though i've heard that it's very linear and hearing that I thought that all Final Fantasy games were pretty much linear (with some side paths to treasure or side quests stuff like getting the bests weapons). You mentioned some PS2 RPGs that you liked what about any for the next gen consoles? Also still wouldn't mind hearing why you like the Ultima games cause the 2 earlier ones i've tried weren't that great.

  • dune_blythe

I was wondering if you had finished persona 4. My God man, finish it already! It is easily in my top 2 favorite rpgs, tied with Glory of Heracles for the NDS. Both those games have really fun stories and I never got bored with either one.

  • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

Ultima IV on the NES was fantastic. It has elements FF could use to keep it interesting.
Although, even the Ultima series kind of wanes in the later games.

  • TheCynicalReaper

Every time Spoony mentions the Shin Megami Tensei games (here they're Persona 3 & 4) , the SMT fanboy in me squeels. Hardly anyone I talk to knows about the SMT RPGs, and those who do only remember their “evil” reputation pre-SMT:Nocturne.

Anyway, I'm glad you tore FFXIII open. I was waiting for someone to go in depth with the stupidity of the villains in that game. The character names are dumb and the linear pathways are hollow to the point of feeling like I'm playing a corpse rather than a game (a pretty corpse with shiny make-up and ribbons tied to its funeral suit, but a corpse none the less).
-Still, I saw the potential in the title and like you I didn't feel enraged so much as depressed. Lightning had potential. Snow had potential. Fuck, with better character design (in terms of the character's personality and influence on the setting around them) Hope could've been as deep and lovable as Ken Amada (Persona 3)!

I wish ATLUS would bring the SMT franchise to the current gen platforms. Though if it meant the games would turn out like FFXIII, then I'd rather it stay on the PS2.

7? Really? all of us like 7? Really Spoony?

I don't….hate 7 but I don't view it as innovative. The only thing innovative was the 3-d. Every character was cliche even by that times standards. It was better than 8, 2, 3, has a lot on the other games but my favorite is still 9. 9 was just….better. It was just a far more enjoyable game. a good game to me makes relatable characters who the player can understand- the everyman as you'd say. 9 had that, but I didn't relate to anyone in 7. 9 revolved around the theme of accepting death, finding value in what you can do and how you've spent your life and the underlying story that everyone forgets about Gaia vs Terra was introduced slowly and efficiently and everyone just seems to think it revolves around Kuja and destroying the kingdom. Fuck you if you think that, it was about how the entire world was being completely disrupted and everyone who died was fueling the inevitable rebirth of a planet who died because of their own foolishness. Everybody talks about how deep 7 is but they disregard everything good 9 had to offer- characters, story, sure I didn't care for the character designs and god was the game slow until after lindblum but that takes me all of 3-4 hours.

anyway, FF13 is one of those games where when I was playing it I was deceived into believing it was good, but it really is a weaker entry into the series. Now I'm done

  • ApatheticOne (the original)

FF13 IS the worst FF so far…hands down, no contest. It's funny that everyone claims this game ''gets better'' after 25-30 hours..but that's when I had my fill of the game. The game is terrible and the biggest let down of the current-gen consoles….XII is superior in every way.

I can completely understand your qualms with FF13, yet from where you mentioned you were at, I would suggest at least putting a couple of more hours in to at least reach the portion where the story explains itself a bit more and also where the game gives your big areas to actually roam around in. I myself just reached that point and it’s a breath of fresh air. Admittedly, players shouldn’t -have- to dredge tough hours on hours of ‘hallway’ adventures, but I would really look forward to seeing your comment on the game after that point.

Also, the crystarium (whatever the leveling system’s name is) does open up to options, although it’s a bit of a slap in the face, and it’s pretty obvious shortly after unlocking it. The item system was confusing at first (with the damn exp bonus multipliers) until you notice the theme, then it’s just a ‘grinding’ mechanism for your equipment… which could have been done in such a better way.

Also, you should show off what boardgames you do enjoy, I think it’d make a pretty good Vlog.

P.S: Play Devil Survivor for the DS, I found it to be so amazing, so much so I wish the other shin tegami games were more like it.

yeah i think with the newer ff games they tend to put alot of effort into making them look pretty and giving you lots of tasks and puzzles to solve, but i do feel tho that they just lack any intresting story or motivation to make me want to play the game. it sometimes feels like there just somthing you have to get through, i do hope they learn to focus more on the story and character development in later games.

im actually more a fan of ff ix than anything else as i enjoy the feel and range of characters tho i can understand if its not your sort of game it has alot of animal/human characters but id recommend it if you fancy giving it a go. even if you dont enjoy it, it will be intresting to see what you think. great review by the way

XIII is basically the extreme opposite of XII. The way I see it XII is the best in series and for many reasons. I beat XIII not too long ago and that game fucking hurts. It's a good thing you stopped playing that horrid pile of armadillo turd. As for it getting “good” 20 hours in, bullshit. The game caught my interest for about an hour or two, into that 20 hour mark, and then SPOILERS* CId drops the Bayonetta bomb and tells me the grand scheme of the fal'cie is to kill the tens of millions of Cacoon citizens to awaken the Maker of humans and Fal'cie alike. And the story gets even shittier, dumber and more boring as you progress even further. Sure it might be heavy on symbolism like X but really? why bother?.
And XIV is going to be an MMO, pff just great. It seems to me ever since IX came out the FF series have been coming out in a pattern: Futuristic melodramatic low IQ title (X/XII) followed by an MMO (XI/XIV) followed by a deep mature realistic title (XII/XV?) lol

If you're on the lookout for good console RPGs, you gotta try Demon's Souls for the PS3. It'll wash the taste of FFXIII right out of your mouth.

Might be a little random here, but aren't you afraid that somebody might see your videos and he might be your manager? He could probably fire you for that because you “swear” and your opinions are too out there. I know this is bullshit, but employers might not. I mean, if you wanted to run for senator you'd probably be dead in the water before you got to the coast, not saying that's in your plan but I'm trying to put it out that you basically can't go that far now.

Ok. So you must also enjoy such fulfilling pastimes as picking fly shit out of 30 pounds of pepper, right? Because i’ll be damned if that’s not nearly as tedious, unrewarding, and pointless as Final Fantasy 13 is.

Hey Spoony, would it be possible for you share with your viewers some of your favourite console RPGs?

I would have to agree with what you said about FF13, I personally haven't played the game but I was watching a friend play it on a video game stream for pretty much 6 days straight. Although I'm surprised you didn't say anything about how long the boss battles can be and the rating system after each battle.

you should start Resonance of Fate! its surprisingly good…. the story is sorta wonky, but the battlesystem makes up for all of it. the game gets friggen hard really fast, but its good in the way that if you get good at the battlesystem and actually manage to beat a boss, it feels REALLY rewarding. Not to mention how much better it is when it comes to creative ways to eliminate the feeling of linearity. It actually feels like you got freedom, even though if you take a closer look you have none at all. but yea… its alot better than FFXIII

Gunblades did exist. But they were a novelty at best. The design is just unpractical 'cos the firing mechanism is near the pommel and guard and it's prone do damage. A bayonet on a rifle or even pistol makes way much more sense.

I have played and finished FFXIII (because I hate myself), and everything you've said is basically what I've been bitching about (plus more since the ending and the motive of the main villain is retarded). But he's one thing I thought you might have gone into. Also spoilers in-case anyone actually cares about the game.

During chapter 7, you see that people in Palumpolum were being rounded up to be purged (killed) since they were within a 2 mile radius of the L'cie. The L'cie knew that which makes the next part stupid. At the end of the Chapter, they arrive at Hope's house and have a nice chat with Hope's dad, which of course get's interrupted as mentioned in the video. But right when they were going to escape, they decided to tie up Hope's dad and act like he was their hostage. Because some how that would prevent him from being killed, even though they knew that people were being rounded up to be killed even though they weren't anywhere close or related to the L'cie. Of course this is before the Calvary arrives and leaves two soldiers to watch over Hope's dad while the L'cie get about the Lindblum, but for fucks sake they could have take him along with them.

So, FFXIII has a story that seems like a 4-year old is telling you about an awesome story with unicorns, robots, and Robocop? That explains those Japanese commercials that starred Robocop.

Expecting Square-Enix to start making sense now is pretty remote. You're more likely to have Robocop step out of your TV, eat your fried chicken, and steal your fridge. It's been known to happen.

Apart from the chocobos and a character called “Cid”, what makes this game a final fantasy game ? There's not even the prelude music FFS ! (i'm quite near the end of the game, still haven't heard it).
Did square enix made this game for a new audience or the old school FF gamer ? Because they fail on both sides. FF noobs can't be interested in the confusing storytelling and the quite complex battle system. Old FF fans will only get disappointed.
As for the characters, i dont really know what to think of them.
Lightning, kind of badass i admit but she's a soldier. She's supposed to kick ass and act strict.
Snow, funniest character of the game because he's so stupid.
Hope, whines a lot indeed but he's a teenager who was kinda forced into the story as he saw his mother die. I think it's at least natural to act the way he does.
Zasz, this Danny Glover “too old for this shit” behavior seems out of place.
Vanille, only to remind us that it's a Japanese game. If you're into anime and manga, you've seen this kind of character a lot.
Fang, is it me or does any recent big name JRPG have to include a light dressed, spear handling, dark haired girl with an attitude ? (think about Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean 4 and you'll see what i mean.)
Anyway, i'm just another disappointed FF consumer.

Your feeling of boredom is exactly how I feel about XII. Haven't played XIII yet, but… everything I've seen has not made me confident. I really think Square has just flipped out now… they seem to have taken the fact that the universe doesn't make sense and ran with it. Are they playing to popularity? They know people are gonna give it 10s and buy it anyway… I don't know why people like these so much. To me the characters and storyline of XII are mostly dull and uninteresting and annoying, so it doesn't surprise me to hear that people are saying the same about XIII. Vaan and Penelo suck! I really don't know what's going on with the story anymore. I'm not paying attention, I'm usually watching vids online while the combat system plays itself.

At times I wonder how much I truly enjoyed X. If I replayed it would I dislike it just as much?

  • Eener101

You're a girl judging from your pic? I think 7 overall was more a boys thing with the tone and the subjects and the way the characters were portrayed. That's how I feel it atleast. 7 Was actually quite innovative for it's time. It blended a very cinematic experience quite well with gameplay and the scale of the story felt quite big (the cinematics helped quite a bit for that goal tho) Gameplay wise it was also quite refreshing with so many great and different minigames, at least imho. Also, the setting was so fresh at the time. So yeah, FF7 in my opinion quite a breath of fresh air. Might not have been everyone's cup of tea, but for what it was it was quite good.

FF9 IS a good game, but for a game that harkens back to the golden FF games so much, a lot from those old games is not present in it. So for the oldschool fans I think a lot of the good qualities in that game get overlooked just because it reminds us so much of the old games and what was missing from it. Especially at the time when it was released. I for one hated the game back then, altho now my opinion has changed on it. I really like how subtle the story is in a way and how many layers it has. It puts the newer games to shame in so many ways.

    • Anonymous

Wow really? FF7 is a little innovative, it had decent storytelling and used cutscenes and 3D graphics for the first time…but the story was bland and half stolen from FF6′s first half. The characters are terrible, I can’t stand a single one. I can enjoy the battle system but the rest of the game is awful to me. Oh yeah, I’m a guy too. I usually agree with Spoony, and I can see how people can like FF7 but it’s not the godly game people act like it is. FF7 was the beginning of the shit for me. It started the whole annoying main character with mental issues thing that Squall continued. I agree with her, 9 is the last FF game I really enjoyed and the only one since 6 that I enjoyed a lot. Normally I’d leave this alone and go on but the whole “7 overall was more a boys thing” just cracked me up.

As for the video, I totally agree with the Persona series. I loved P3 and P4, there’s no choice for me, they’re by far the best RPGs I’ve played in the past few years. Granted I love the music and length even though Spoony seems to not.

I didn't play FFXIII, so I'm gonna ask: They turn to crystal if they succeed? Geez, doing something for an unknown force and then being transformed to a giant rock … I'd do whatever I want while I still have the time to, and once I'm a zombie I shall wander the world of these strange lazy gods. °,…,° I mean, you're screwed anyways, so who cares.

Loved the log, I found Sherlock Holmes kinda boring though.

  • Arkveveen

I personally like FF 13… call me a rebel for 'that' then, just like how you like FF 12, Spoony.

FF 13 is a mixed review game. XPlay gave it a 4 out of 5, Metacritic gave it a 83/100, player reviews on Metacritic gave it a 75/100. I don't know which source to 'trust' anymore. Even 'good' games get boring for me, even games that are considered bad that I like make me go: “Why is this game 'bad' again?” I trust my OWN instincts and my own interests. Call me biased, call me stupid or retarded; but at least I know what I WANT as a gamer.

I can TELL when a game is bad, and that's games like “I'm Not Alone” that I bought stupidly on Steam for 35 bucks (a buggy, poorly coded, poor frame rate littered mess of a survival horror game). At least FF 13 is POLISHED to a mirror finish unlike some games. Call me a rebel all you want, I like these games that many people seem to not like, such as Silent Hill Homecoming which I love to death and the recent Wolfenstein game which many seem to call 'garbage' despite it's 74/100 Metacritic score. That's a pretty favorable review score! But even Metacritic is questionable because of how they derive their 'score'. As I keep saying, it's never good to sum things up in numbers; you don't sum up your friends and loved ones in numbers, then why do it for videogames? The best thing to do is give one's personal impression of the game to others so they know if it's good or not.

I play many 'good' games too. Mass Effect 2 being one of my more favorite 'good' games. But I don't play games because of if they are 'good' or not. I play them for entertainment, and so far, FF 13 wasn't 'boring' to me at all.

But when I first played FF 13, I felt it was going to be great. And it was, it has an amazing story rich with lore, complex battle system requiring strategy that is a LEGIT challenge and not so damn easy like many other RPG's. Yeah, the storytelling is lazy; but I like reading stuff to learn more, so I read everything in the datalog! And what I found is an amazingly rich fantasy world with a story that asks the challenging question about the characters: “Will they save themselves, or will they save the world?”

Yeah, so what if it's linear? So what if it has no 'choices' at all? Sometimes, I need something simple and straightforward and not all this Fallout 3 style open world bullshit! Fallout 3 was just an OBLIVION CLONE, while Oblivion was a generic bland fantasy game; in my opinion. FF 13 is an interesting fantasy game, an interesting world and setting that even I, being a creative artist, could not think of! Really, and the characters, however annoying or cool, are LIKABLE and believable for once! They spent 4 years on this game, and if it's crappy than that would be BULLSHIT. Besides, once one gets 30 hours into the game, it 'opens up' and allows you to travel around… and when you finish the game, it opens up even more for you to explore and fight your way to the most powerful enemy in the game on hunt mission number 64. That sounds like a damn good time to me!

So whatever; call me an idiot, or call me a retard, I will stand by my opinions for once rather than cower away like a coward!

  • batotaku13

i honestly like FF13 a lot. i never understood why the linearity is a bad thing. if the experience and pacing are good from start to finish, why is it a problem? i mean, there are a ton of games that are extremely linear that people love (god of war, gears of war, modern warfare, etc.), yet nobody complains about the design of those games. to a certain extent i get it, but at the same time it's not like final fantasy is fallout 3 where there are no restrictions about anything you can do.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gary-Phillips/1676420523 Gary Phillips

Everytime I hear someone recommend me FFXIII I hear another person say how bad it is. I have the same opinion as you Spoony as far as when a game has a horrible story, I no longer have a reason to pick it up again. It's the same reason why I refuse to play inFamous again. Pretty nice gameplay and nice powers, but good lord the story… the friggin' story, I've never felt so lost as to why a character is doing what he's doing in my life. The continuity is bad. The game seems to refuse to explain some of the details that constantly seem to spring to mind (mostly like how Cole can survive a 50 story drop from a building, yet a couple bullets in his body are enough to put him down).

Anyway, can't wait to hear the rest of your review for FFX. It's understandable why it's taking so long though, so take your time. As for Resonance of Fate, it's pretty nice so far. The game gives you the option to customize your weapons, but don't take that to mean that the appearance of the weapon will change with each customization (good thing too, because there's just some things in the customization that wouldn't really look quite right what with the sight extension that not only functions as a sight itself, but allows for ANOTHER sight to be placed above it, and placing one scope in front of another scope, and making the barrel of a pistol be like 2 feet long or some such outrageousness). The battle system is DAMN unforgiving when you first start off, so be forewarned that when you're told to go to the Arena to train (i.e. tutorials), DO IT! It also wouldn't hurt to read the instruction manual, it tends to explain some things a bit better than the tutorials. Also, Hero Actions are your friend and your lover. You may have a limited amount of them, but there are plenty of ways to gain them back.

I feel ya on the decline of the Final Fantasy series since VII. I will say for as much as I like the games and the RPG genre I always…always..lose interest halfway through and move on to something else. VI has the best story/characters (since there are like 30 of them) but I still lost interest in it. VII is a classic to be sure..I'm replaying it on the PSP whenever I travel so I hope complete it eventually. VIII was complete shit I agree so I definitely never finished that abominable “game.” IX will be re-released on the PSN soon and since I never owned a PSX (I was a PC gamer only throughout that console cycle) I still gotta give it a chance. Made it halfway through X and quit (loved the first review of X…seriously…Blitzball? WTF!?) XI…lets forget that one even existed. I liked XII as well..lost interest and moved on, but I liked it.

So here we go again with XIII..I might pick it up down the line, but if anyone went out and paid full price for it then I'm sorry for you..really I am..if there was one game I would wait a while to play..it would be this one. SE's track record on these games has been shaky since VII..so why should I repeat the same damn pattern and be $60 less in my bank account.

  • spoonythemightyreviewer

Thank God you're not a professional reviewer, but just a random casual gamer, who states his opinion.
And yeah. The first 20 hours of FF 13 are pretty much as boring as these 40 minutes of your stating the obvious. It's just a shame you're bitching about a game you didn't even bother to play till the end. Heck, you didn't even play half of it. Pathetic.

I got the World War Z audiobook off Audible, and I was annoyed about how much they cut from it. The North Korea story's gone, the story about the guys on the Chinese submarine are gone, most of the stuff from the Holy Russian Empire is gone, Kondo and Komonaga never meet… basically, half the book is gone. Why, could they not afford more voice actors?

Fortunately, I can get a lot of audiobooks from my local library. They've got most of Neil Gaiman's work, my favourite author, lots of Douglas Adams, bestsellers and classics, and a lot of other things. It's pretty cool.

My friend has been playing Final Fantasy XIII and is insisting it's good so that he doesn't look like a dumbass, but one thing that has been intriguing me about it is the concept of the l'Cie. Granted, since the game is all linear, you're just rolling yourself along a rail until everyone in your party becomes a zombie or a crystal (Vanille can't come to either conclusion soon enough), and though it's aggravating that they just get arbitrarily turned into l'Cie and aren't told what their Focus is, it's an idea that interests me. All these people have been put to an intense test, their existence is rapidly drawing to one of two conclusions, and it's up to them and only them to achieve the right one. I find it cool how much is at stake for each of them on an individual basis, but it's rubbish because you know that, since these characters have such unappealing personalities you won't care if they find out or turn to zombies, and again, since this game is on a rail, they're just going to switch at some point according to the story's progression, and I imagine you can see it coming. Isn't one of the points of a “game” in that it's interactive, and you might be able to tweak the story's outcome, or open up something new about it?

Why the Fal'cie do this to certain people, I'm still unclear, but then again I barely know what a Fal'cie is. Some kind of magic robot? I don't necessarily think they l'Cie people to make them useful to society or something, they just like handing out these tests to people that they'd like to see do it. Seems like we're all rats in a maze, then, or puppets on strings. Possibly another interesting way to look at it, if it didn't regress to just toying with these character's unconvincing feelings. :S

I dunno Spoony, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on Final Fantasy 13. It wasn't a terrible game by any means, it wasn't great but it wasn't bad. The fact that it was linear wasn't such a bad thing, it moved the story along didn't it? I'll agree that it gets a little repetitive but a ways into the game you actually gain a lot of freedom and see one of the most beautiful areas of the game. If you're going to talk about it, at least play up until that point. The plot had it's share of problems as did the characters but I've seen worse. It's good points definitely make up for the parts it lacks in my opinion.

The plot is they're turn to crystal to supposed have an immortal life. Yet the thing is that (once again spoilers) all the people who have been turned to crystal during the game, go back to normal. As for the zombies, they eventually become floating rocks who think they're still human and/or regret they haven't completed their focus. Actually the whole focus thing is pointless really, because 3 people technically didn't complete their focus, yet turn to crystal, and the fal'cie can decide to turn people into C'ith.

  • kefkaesque

The problem is that if it gets good at hour 20, and you have three hours to play every day, thenu would need to waste your leisure time for a WEEK before it would begin to pay off. There is something very, VERY wrong with that. There are plenty of other games I could play that are great from start to finish. Why would I waste my time with FFXIII?

  • Worlack

Spoony, I love you man, but you are almost completely wrong about every comment you have made on FFXIII.

You are in the same boat as I was at your point in the game, except I wasn't bored.

-No doubt the game is a pure linear “hallway march” until the 30 hour mark (disk 3 on Xbox).
-The crystarium doesn't open up to the other roles until about the 30 hour mark.
-The mission system/endgame optional fights don't open up until the 30 hour mark.
-Once you understand the upgrade items system, it has a purpose and I personally enjoy being able to essentially “pick” a legendary item's stats as well as making my accessories more powerful, not to mention the synergy system where items give bonuses in conjunction with other items.

Many believe these problems are all due to the fact that Square decided to go with the Xbox release. If you didn't go with a pure linear style up to a point there would be disk swapping. I personally don't have a problem with disk swapping if it would solve the linear issue, but they decided to go with multiple platforms. As an Xbox owner I am personally happy that I can play the game at all instead of having to watch a lets play because I won't go out and buy a PS3 just for FFXIII.

As far as the story telling. I agree, you feel very lost and Vanille's little voice-overs don't make a bit of sense, but you will find that it will make more sense in hindsight. I certainly think you have a valid point about the storytelling though and the datalog bullshit. I felt utterly confused until I read the novel that is the datalog entries. You shouldn't have to do that; even FFX's “exposition man” (Maechen I think is how it's spelled) was better than them just handing you the datalog. However, being confused in a Final Fantasy game is no surprise to me.

I think it's unfortunate you have passed complete, damning, judgment on the game before it actually opens up. You can make the point until you run out of breath that you shouldn't have to play the game for 30 hours to begin to understand and enjoy it, I agree. However I believe you should get to that point and try out past the 30 hour mark (disk 3) before you place this game behind FFVIII of all games.

PS: It sort of reminds me of Persona 3 in that you need to get about 30 hours in to actually understand what the fuck is actually going on in the world and why. At that point for me, the story finally opened up.

PPS: I am not an Xbox or FF fanboi. I only enjoyed FFX and FFXIII so far. Although my admittance of enjoying FFX is probably enough to render my entire post pointless in many users eyes.

Take care and keep up the good work. I love your videos.

Totally agree with you on Wrestlemania, Spoony. It just didn't feel like a Wrestlemania event; it felt more like one of the off-month PPVs, to be honest.

  • ultimared

what happened with me is I stopped at 24 hours and I know “why put yourself through this if your not gonna play the good bit” and guess what I got to pulse which so far is the only non coridoor bit to the game or the first non hallway part to the game and I felt so offended by it and so let down that I thought I'm going to have to leave this game for months before I get the first 24 hours out of my system, so I can feel what is suppost to be the good bit of the game without any hatred towards this.

now as things go that you didn't like, well I liked Hope incomparason to most other children characters in Final Fantasy because he is the most child-like (well second most child like if you count Vi Vi from 9 [and he was a fucking creation]) you get why he hates Snow and why you feel like he has hardly any complex thoughts as to why Snow did what he did other than the primitive ones (i.e hate and wants him dead) if he was older he'd try to understand it more thus wasting a few half good moments (where Hope tries to kill Snow with Lightening's knife IS the best moment in that clusterfuck of the first fucking day of gameplay). so I liked Hope

Sazh is a superb character actually and your spot on with him. my sister pointed out that Sazh was going to be annoying but he is so human and likeable its refreshing to see someone that looks like he was going to be comic relief have gravitas.

but yea I'm going to finish it but I'm going to play the shit out of Bad Company 2 before I do

oh yeah and exploration on Pulse is bullshit you trade coridoors for an apartment building.

Nah. Your review of the FULL FF13 game is pathetic. That’s all.
I totally agree with you on some of the bad sides of this game. The problem is there are also some major good sides you didn’t mention. Why? Oh right…. Because you fucking didn’t play the game…

Really man. It’s better if you try to criticise stuff you know. FF 13 obviously doesn’t fall into this group.

You're not alone Spoony. I also like 12. It has a more open world and you feel like you are in a Final Fantasy world. There isn't a dedicated love story between main characters or any real love story at all. The overall plot is very political than this epic fantasy, which might be why people hated it, there isn't this Earth shattering theme of either end of the world, or time travel, just the usual evil Empire wanting to take over the world and even the characters from the Empire doesn't look evil, it has a very well grounded cast of characters. Well Vaan and Penelop don't seem to belong in the plot. I get the sky pirate and his female Chewie, Baush, whose story is pretty much a Judge Dread remake, they were not even trying to cover up how much of a Judge Dread story this is. The man has a twin brother who was also a Judge, I laughed when there are people called Judges and they ARE the Law and that word has been said so many times in the script. Baush's twin brother framed him for murder and he's sentenced to jail in some desert. He breaks out and is on a quest for justice and faces off with his brother somewhere in the end and at the end of the story, he becomes a Judge again.

  • excalibur01

I also like the whole Transforming gunblade. It looks like a gun, and then it transforms like a butterfly knife and turns into a sword

Why are so many people so disappointed that he didn't want to play the rest of XIII? The guy's a busy man apparently and he has other things to do than waste his time playing through a majority of crap story for 25 hours until it gets “good.”

  • Skolex

So you played the first 20 hours and watched this 40 minute video, thought they were both boring, and you didn't think to stop at one point and say to yourself, “man, this is pretty boring, I should go to something with my life.”?

    Go you.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Alden/100000469737019 Christopher Alden

  • They Call Me The Fizz

I can't blame you for being tired of wrestling, Spoony… Botchamania's the only thing keeping me interested

Frankly, most JRPG's nowadays are by-the-number affairs… Investing too much money into advertising and graphics and too afraid of making too many changes to the established gameplay formula of menu navigation and typical shonen manga angst
It's no wonder the Role-Playing genre is being dominated by western studios like Bethesda and Bioware – at least they're not afraid of changing up the mechanics every now and then and actually giving you some control over how the story pans out instead of leading you around by the leash

It doesn't surprise me that you don't like Final Fantasy XIII, but it is unfortunate for my sake. I'll eventually rent this game, I haven't yet because I don't have the time right now, but I will. The downside is I know a number of people who have played deep into this game and I've liked none of what I've heard so far. Even when I ask fans of the game specific questions, the answers they give suggest that it's not the game for me. Which is too bad because I haven't liked a Final Fantasy game since IX and I really want to.

I guess I shouldn't comment on it too much until I try it, but it just sounds like there's a general lack of choices in this game. Lack of choices when it comes to altering your statistics, deviating from the plot for periods of time, and when it comes to getting new gear. For me, part of a Final Fantasy game is completing the sidequests or what have you to get better weapons, magics, etc but it sounds like this game doesn't have that. But maybe what I've heard is wrong. I guess I'll find out myself later on…

  • coolgy

Regarding FFXIII, I just dont care to save Cacoon. We didn't really experience life in Cacoon, or any relationship to it other than “Oh we must save it because my sister said so” I didn't have any enthusiasm towards saving Cacoon which is why i didn't care for the entire plot. Such a big disappointment from something that calls itself a final fantasy… I regret my purchase.

    • Anonymous

I agree with a lot of this. (Except for the misspellings of Cocoon and regretting of the purchase.)

I certainly didn’t feel any sympathy for the people of Cocoon. I could understand how they are completely brainwashed and dependent on the Fal’cie. I makes perfect sense why they hate your party, but it still didn’t make me want to save Cocoon whatsoever. If I had a choice I would have rather lived out my remaining human days on Gran Pulse.

I've never thought you could make a on-the-rails RPG until I played Final Fantasy 13. Now I know how.

  • solidsnakeus

Persona 4 is amazing and yes it's pretty much the only console game outside of NHL 10 that I've been playing. Would love to see a review of it from ya, to show us the awesomeness that it actually is.

  • NoTimeForThatCrap

Yeah, there's absolutely no fucking excuse for that.

Final Fantasy 13 apologists can go straight to hell. They can't make a decent point to make this game sound good because there is no point that makes this shit sound good.

  • OmniaX

Spoony, I hope you could give FF13 a bit more time, least till you get out of the 'hallway adventure'. To me it was a breath of fresh air. The leveling and item systems do suck in the own ways, and the story gets a little better just a bit later.. but I would like to see your follow up after that point anyways.

Also, please do a Vlog over your board games, I'm quite curious myself as to which games you enjoy playing.

P.S: Try Devil Survivor for the DS, amazing game for a shin tegami game.

  • NoTimeForThatCrap

So, you're basically admitting that his opinion is 100% valid by honestly stating that the first 20 hours are boring shit, and then trying to say it's “pathetic” to have an entirely reasonable point based on the fact that the first 20 hours are boring shit?

Sorry buddy. You can't have it both ways. Unless you LIKE sounding like a hypocritical douche.

You know damn well that you, nor anyone else in their right mind is going to deal with 20 hours of boring shit for ANY reason. You sir, have made no point. In fact, you've pretty much admitted that you're full of shit and HAVE no point. Way to go.

  • 狐・小百合

Spoony, the funny thing was that I went and played a bit of Final Fantasy 7 again when 13 came out and was somehow much more impressed with it and the story actually makes me feel something.

  • kefkaesque

Hmm, a thought just occurred to me.

This game takes 20 hours to get good, and costs 60$. That means in the time it takes this game to get done, you could put in enough hours at a minimum wage job to buy THREE other games (Well, in Canada at least)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matt-Milligan/520016390 Matt Milligan

Thanks for putting into words the hate I have for FF13. You are a better man than me because I quit at 10 hours. I hated all the characters, the plot is insane and its boring. Even my friends say “you need to play it after an X amount of hours and it gets good”.

So after two weeks, I traded it in for a better game; Tales of Vespira.

  • DeathsHead419

I had those exact thoughts myself on Sherlock Holmes, though the Moriarty sub-plot wasn't pointless. It was obvious sequal bait, pure and simple.

Also, about FFXIII, and this it gets better 20-30 hours in. That's like forcing people to pound nails into their leg for hours before you let them see a great movie. And honestly, are you really sure it's good? Maybe you are mistaking quality for relife you are not being tortured anymore.

  • MitchellBandes

It is a shame that you didn't have enough time to get to get far enough into the game to see the characters become more fleshed out or for everything in the game world to all come together. For as far as you've been able to play, your opinion is valid. But do me a favor and pick up the game sometime in the future, when the bad memories have subsided. Once you reach Chapter 11, the world begins to open up and become more sandbox-like, the story gets progressively better, and the experience becomes all the more enjoyable. You'll not regret investing a few more hours into it.

Perhaps you'll be more likely to enjoy the game if I give you a little backstory to work with.

On a planet called Gran Pulse, a vague entity called The Maker created two major species: Humans and Fal'Cie. Humans are the special, versatile creatures that can do anything they put their mind to; while Fal'Cie are more like elemental titans which were created to perform only a single role, yet they do it better than anything else on the planet.

Eventually, The Maker got bored and left Gran Pulse. Everyone pretty much panicked, and chaos ensued. In an attempt to bring back The Maker, humans and Fal'Cie worked together to build the floating world of Cocoon. And as you would expect between two societies, centuries of living apart caused them to become untrusting of one another, and a cold war of sorts broke out.

The thing is, Fal'Cie really suck at fighting each other, seeing how their potential for growth or change is extremely limited. So the Fal'Cie invented the process of turning humans into L'Cie, who would then do the fighting for them.

L'Cie are basically humans fused with a Fal'Cie's essence. They get awesome superpowers, but are forced to perform a Focus, a single objective that appears in a vision. If they manage to complete the Focus before time runs out, they get turned into crystal statues until the Fal'Cie decides to use their services again. Otherwise, they get turned into Cie'th, monstrous-looking sad sacks that can only shamble around wallowing in despair for all eternity.

Lightning and the gang are Pulse L'Cie, which means they have to complete a mission for one of the Fal'Cie of Gran Pulse, or get turned into miserable zombie creatures. And it happens that their mission is to destroy Cocoon.

There, hope that cleared up any confusion.

  • Rumisiel

I for one encourage the wrestling talk. Sure don't let it interfere with other projects, but it's still something I wanna see when it happens. If other people don't want to see it at all, they don't have to click the play button. But again, I suppose the FFX review and whatever other stuff happening behind the scenes is also important and shouldn't be neglected either.

  • gurall200

Tactics was the last genuinly excellent game in the final fantasy series (I don't know if it was released before or after 7, I think after), for me, its all gone downhill with brief periods of excellence (9, kingdoms hearts (it kinda counts)

I love how I can “go straight to hell” for expressing an opinion. Obviously my post was just flagged immediately as “just another FF fanboi” or people fail at reading comprehension as I stated multiple times that I understand and agree with most of the complaints.

Ah video game communities. Reminds me of playing WoW.

  • CrazyCracker994

On the same boat as you with FFXIII. Bought it about 3 weeks ago, barely past chapter 4/5. It feels like a chore to sit down and play it. Normally with these games I'm engaged in the story so much, that I really want to play it whenever I can, here…not so much. Hell even my sister who's been playing the game for only TWO days has nearly overtaken me.

Looking forward for the next part of the FFX by the way, first part was fucking hilarious.

enlightening, never was much of a wrestling fan, just didn’t grow up with it or get into it, none of my friends did so I only know the big names. Tell like it is, Spoony.

Sometimes I think current-gen graphics are seen by japanese developers as an excuse to strip away as much of the 'game' as possible. Now, that's not their agenda, necessarily; Japan's games are obsessed with self-escapism, to the point of removing the player him/herself. Hence, a movie.

My only regret is that FF monopolized the jrpg market and clouded everyone's impressions of the genre. And hey, I was forgiving with FFX. New console, new voice acting, launch title. But the characters weren't caricatures, and even Tidus didn't whine so much about his life as being kept out of the loop on everything. And Rikku looks like Meryl Streep when compared to the genki horror of Vanille.

  • rudy023

It gets good 25 hours in… that's like saying a movie gets good an hour and twenty minutes in. Who needs that? I haven't bought a Final Fantasy game since 9 & the last RPG I played to the end was the first Lunar on PS1 (this was like last year). I think these days the developers focus is on mind blowing graphics & very little is spent on gameplay like it was back in the days of NES or even PS1.

Speaking as a MAJOR Final Fantasy fan, I agree with virtually every word you spoke regarding XIII. It really is a huge dissapointment, in that it looked so promising, and you can tell that it has a lot of potential, but it fails so spectacularly to deliver. But I do have a few points to address, if you'll indulge me.

First I would disagree that VII was the last great FF, though nothing since has been quite as good.. I would instead attribute that to IX, at least in terms of story and character. Crisis Core, which is a prequel to VII, was also good in regards to story, even if the gameplay was repetitive and some of the characters (I'm looking at you Genesis) were horrible.

I might not actually disagree regarding your statement that FF movies are bad as a rule. I would remind you however that to every rule, there is an exception. Advent Children Complete, the extended version of Advent Children, is actually fairly good. Granted Advent Children sucked on every level, from its confusing as hell plot to its non-existent character developement. But Complete has an extra thirty minutes worth the footage, and it works freaking miracles man. Its almost like a different movie in that the plot is coherent, and the characters are developed and explained.

I'm also glad to see that I'm not the only person who tolerates XII. Anyway, assuming you read this comment, I've taken enough of your time. So have a good night/day, and I look forward to upcoming reviews.

  • Duggabboo

I just got an awesome idea for a monster system. Have monsters that are randomly generated so if you're in an area where you fight moogles, the little moogle ball (honestly what the fuck is up that?) might be bigger, smaller, different color, and the actual moogle might be bigger, have small arms, or be younger or older. Things like speed, weaknesses, HP, and pre-rendered status conditions would be amazing. What I mean with pre-rendered status conditions is if you run through a forest poisoned and you fight alot of monsters that run or get poisoned because of you, all of the creatures get sick and can infect you. So maybe there'll be monsters limping in battle or with half their life already drained. Also, implement evolution. No joke! If you kill all the water flan because you only have lightning, then the fire flan will start to take over the water flan. The only bad thing about that is then you would have an all around team and what's the point of playing a ROLE playing game when you can be anything and everything. Also, there should be things the monsters are doing. Like reproduction rates and scavenging times. It would be so much easier in a game where there's a chance that if you kill all the monsters quick enough, they'll go extinct. Sure, more monsters would integrate into the place, but it would be cool playing a Final Fantasy game where the number of monsters isn't infinity and then some.

    What do you think?

Now explain to me why I can't just say.

There are Xs that hate Ys but the Xs are weak so they turn Ys into Xs. Also, there's a huge floating tower.

Unless The Maker (great fucking metaphor) has anything to do in the end, it's bullshit and you just made a Vicis perussi negotium, literally in latin a time consuming pursuit, and yes I made that up on the spot. It's just like Spoony talking about Persona 3 FES where it's “here's a tower, let's destroy it!”. You could replace the plot of FF13 with “there are zombies and if you don't do what they tell you, you get turned in to one. Oh no, there's a zombie nest. Destroy it. Done. Play credits.” And if you say that I'm just boiling the stew down till it burns then yes, I am, because if I couldn't then I would have to admit that it's good story telling.

  • Duggabboo

If it had 100 hours which I doubt, then the only enjoyable part is 88% of the game.

Point of order on Dr. Watson!

I've seen plenty of adaptations of Holmes but never one in which Watson was portrayed as a bumbling fool. In the stories he is kind of bumbling but he has to be because Holmes rarely reveals what he's up to. This is a character thing, of course, but it's also a necessity where Watson is the narrator. Pretty much every Holmes incarnation I can think of has got it right, he's not a moron, but he can't always be with it – i'm wondering if you have some kind US adaptations with comedy english accents and wot not.

Also, to drone on for those that haven't read much or any Conan-Doyle, the Holmes stories aren't great literature, they were never intended to be. 'Pulp writer' is an apt description but in victorian times even if you were churning out stories for magazines like Arthur Conan Doyle, they would still be genteel and somewhat staid. I'd never say he kicked ass – he was edgy enough being a crack addict and fitting in a little to easily when going undercover at opium dens.

So he's fair game for adaptations, but surely having him as a lackadaisical drug addict would have been more interesting for an action movie.

  • Quicksilver_the_Archangel

Totally agree with you about Watson and Adler – loved the former, hated the latter. Still don't regret seeing the movie three times, though.

I'm sorry Dr. Insano is so hard on you, because he really is a great character. Maybe it could become an April Fool's tradition where Dr. Insano does a review? Because the Ferris Bueller was truly killer.

  • Jumpooleez

    1. I think your FF reviews are great for the gaming community, and you should put the FF 10 review on YouTube too, so even more people will see it. I mean, I don't mind Final Fantasy at all, but the fans… my god. These fucking guys (and girls) will freak if you suggest there is anything remotely boring, unoriginal, aesthetically unpleasant, or annoying about the recent releases. That is fucking idiotic, because from 9 on they've gotten worse and worse, and fuck I enjoyed 9 and 10 the most! At least someday finish your FF 10 review. You're off to a good start.

    2. That Ferris Bueller review was awesome as Insano Maybe you should do him once every year or so, because I agree that Insano (most characters really) gets old, but he's a fun surprise.

  • ScutigeraColeoptrata

Yeah, I hate to say it but I have to agree with you about Final Fantasy XIII Spoony. There were moments early on in Final Fantasy XIII's story where I actually thought, “This is going to be a really fantastic game, and may finally surpass VII in everybody's minds.” I imagined that there would be a ton of different locations, different NPCs, different sub plots etc. Instead the story wasted a tremendous amount of time doing literally nothing.

As you said there are good things about Final Fantasy XIII. If Square Enix took the rather innovative combat system from Final Fantasy XIII, combined it with the open world exploration of Final Fantasy XII, added the customization of games like Final Fantasy V, and gave it a story similar in pacing to Final Fantasy VI or VII, I imagine you would get a very solid RPG.

  • MitchellBandes

It might help if you actually played the game first so you could summarize it properly. Fal'Cie are not zombies, you are not being sent out to raid zombie nests, and doing what you're told only upgrades your fate from eternal suffering to eternal slavery.

    • Anonymous

It’s BASICALLY a flying tower. Did you forget the whole Persona 3 thing? And I didn’t say the Fal’Cie were zombies, I said they played the role of them.

  • Nemy10Dawg

Seriously, Persona 4 is absolutely amazing. It has the best character development of any RPG I have ever played, and the battle system is intoxicating. You need to finish it.

  • Skolex

You guys that are telling him to play “just a few more hours in, and then it gets good” are either incredibly patient, or incredibly ignorant as to what really makes a good game. A game, especially an RPG that you're gonna spend that many hours on, needs to be good starting out, not teetering towards the end.

No one is going to sit through something, be it a tv show, movie, or video game where all the exposition, facts, suspense, action and climax are all crammed in right at the end. It's ridiculous to make something like that, and no one is going to like it unless they're drooling over the distracting eye-candy and glittering special effects, which is what this game was built around.

  • Quinntensity

OH NOOOO!!!! How could they make a bunch of hallways. This is a terrible thing that they introduced in FFX and I HATED it. I thought this stupidity was behind me and news of this only makes me reluctant to buy one of the games I was looking foreword to most. Nothing that reminds me of FFX is a terrible thing.

  • LordT83

I agree with you about 7 being the last good FF game. I actually thought 8 and 10 were ok enough to finish, but 9 i couldn't complete no matter how hard i tried. I would probably say 6 is my favorite or maybe that is because it was the first one i played back on the super nintendo when it was still just FF3.

all i can say about 13 is push a little bit further. chapter 11 the game kind of opens up a bit more and is closer in style to 12. im not that much farther then that myself, but you can choose your own party for once and you get side missions like in 12 too. I still have mixed feelings about 13. I paid 60 bucks for it so i will finish it haha.

FFXIII was a massive let down in every way. I can't believe your defending the combat system. FFXII started this whole autopilot, hands-off approach to combat that is such a step backwards. XIII is easily just as bad in this regard. There is absolutely no depth to the combat system at all. Switching paradigm's is their lazy ass way of taking all customization and strategy out of the game. Now instead of figuring out an enemies weakness and exploiting it it's boiled down to should I use a physical attack or a magic one. Because beyond that the game literally does the rest on its own. I have said it before and i'll say it again. FFXIII is quite literally “babies first RPG”. It holds your damn hand in every way possible. In combat, in exploration, in skill and stat management, in equipment and items. Every aspect of the RPG formula was either completely removed or dumbed down so much it's barely even there at all. As it is I would only recommend this game to small children who seriously can't go wrong with it. It's shiny to keep their attention and it's so god damn simple that they can't screw it up.

  • lukegroundwalker

Hey Spoony, have you gotten ahold of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for the DS? I was wondering what your thoughts on it and Devil Survivor.

  • mkfan1602

I agree with everything you said FFXIII. I to kept playing the game thinking it would get better and it didn't. If you can believe I to put Persona 4 on hold for FXIII. I also went through the process of thought that I must have been crazy to stop Persona 4 for Final Fantasy XIII. I am back playing Persona 4 and everything is right in the world again. Oh and they have announced they are working on Persona 5 YAY.

The fans here are the same, yet different. Most of them just freak if you suggest if there's anything remotely good about a game solely based on Spoony's Vlog. If you don't like the game, that's no big deal, but the comments section on this video is, for the most part, an echo chamber.

I'm not going to tell someone that “it gets better”, I'd rather tell them about the excellent combat system and the likable characters (Vanille excluded, I really don't like her).

I guess what it comes down to is that people look for different things when playing the same game, especially RPGs. From what I gathered, Spoony was looking for a good story when he sat down to play this game. I was more interested with the gameplay. I don't think it takes a genius to figure out we had different impressions.

Play the game yourself, and see what you think. You might like it, you might not. No opinion is really right or wrong, not mine, not Spoony's, not anyone else. With that said, you should take mine with a grain of salt. If you agree with me, it's not because I'm right.

-OK, I've got basically nothing to add here on the subject of wrestling, since I've never watched a show in my life and it doesn't sound like my cup of tea. I only know about it from your videos and word of mouth from all of my friends. That said, I have plenty to say about the rest of this.

-First of all, I find it rather ironic that this and the related Tweet are the first mentions of Yahtzee you've given since he plugged you in that interview so long ago, because I haven't been so disgusted with one of his videos since the second one on E3, the one where, possibly out of fatigue, he resorts to childish namecalling before finishing with a blanket condemnation of humanity and especially his readership, one of those heaping spoonfuls of misanthropy that makes me wonder why the hell I got into this asshole in the first place. My “favorite” part of the review was near the end, where he asserts that he is an unbiased critic, “Shut up! I am!” But he isn't, is he. He can give his self-effacing sheepish little admission if he likes, but acknowledging the problem doesn't remove it.

What I'm getting at is that my favorite ZP videos are the ones where I learn something, be it a good game that I've overlooked or a lesson on what not to do. In the aforementioned two videos, I learned nothing; if I didn't know any better, I'd say I learned less than nothing, having finished them dumber than when I started. I knew I would hate the video the instant I saw the thumbnail on his archive.

Still, I'm probably overreacting. This isn't really my equivalent of Spoony's FF8, where I have to admit that something I used to like just isn't any good anymore. I'll probably still watch these videos trying my best to like them and I probably will, most of the time. At least I hope so.

-Anyway, to get back on track, yes, I do have a bit of a hard time believing that you don't inherently hate Final Fantasy, although it's not impossible for me to believe it like it was in Yahtzee's case. I just remember your overblown histrionics regarding Tidus, which have become significantly less funny to me the more I dwell on them, and I can't believe that this is how you would really react, that you're not putting on a show for the benefit of people who share your opinion.

Maybe I don't have the benefit of nostalgic memories of the first six games, but I just can't muster up the energy required to be a fan or a hater. I have more emotional attachment to Lost than even my favorite Final Fantasies, and you can interpret that however you will.

I haven't watched any of your FF8 videos in months. I see the rest of your oeuvre on a weekly to monthly basis. I'll probably never touch your FF10 videos except to look at them the first time, and yeah, I'll probably laugh, but soon that'll be taken over by discomfort. I like you, Spoony, I think it'd be awesome hanging out with you, but I just can't get behind this position of yours.

-FF12 is one of my top three, for much of the same reasons you described. It's the closest one of the main games has ever gotten to simulating a real world with a real civilization (and I'm excluding FF11 because that's probably my least favorite out of all of them). It strikes a good balance between the open, freely-explorable but mostly empty worlds of the first nine games and the populated but linear worlds of 10 and 13.

By the way, I'm making a lot of assumptions about 13 because I've never played it, and I doubt I will anytime soon. I'll probably see a Let's Play or something before I play it myself.

-Your point about leveling up weapons brings me to one of the games that I was sorely disappointed by: Disgaea. I was told that this game had a kickass, funny story, and to my dismay, it turned out that you needed to grind yourself to the fucking marrow to get the next cutscene. You can level up not just every character, but every item and piece of equipment, and the level cap is 9999! This is what people who hate JRPG game mechanics think all of those games play like.

And there's another thing I hate about Nippon Ichi games. You know how in the comments to the first FF10 video that I couldn't fathom not wanting to play a game based on the art style alone? Those games, especially Soul Nomad and the World Eaters, put the lie to that statement. Soul Nomad's poorly-drawn stick figure people make me ill, which is a shame because the story isn't half bad (I know from the LP, of course. I doubt I could stomach actually playing the game.). Maybe endlessly repeating the same map in order to get that extra level, or playing through a endurance-straining gauntlet in the Item World is your bag, but it isn't mine.

-Your bit on exposition, which is helpful for me to hear, by the way, reminds me of the Nostalgia Critic's Quest for Camelot review. I keep picturing you going through FF13, or FF8 for that matter, yelling, “Explain, Squaresoft! Explain!” Probably not a deal-breaker for me as a reader, but I'll try my best not to do any of that in my own stories.

-YES! I cannot agree with you more about Watson! That was the main selling point for the Sherlock Holmes movie, which I still haven't seen yet.

So thanks for putting up with me, if you've read this far. I don't comment on this sort of thing often, but when I do, I tend to ramble on.

  • http://www.facebook.com/treblekicker António Maria Correia

I love the wrestling talk. I do however agree with you fully with the Cena thing. Talented, yet very childish.

  • theonesin

So you picked up Resonance of Fate? I'm thinking of picking it up once the semester ends, but it would be cool to hear some first impressions on it, anything at all.

  • sassamura

About FF. Every time you complain about game's complexity I think you are idiot. Making the game more complex, makes it less linear, and makes the player compromise with the game bigger. And about the storyline what the fuck, really, have it to throw the fucking story in your face cause you are too much LAZY too even try to figure that out. Maybe it should be tips in the american version to help this american lazy retard people understand the story.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/William-James-Asbury/669005569 William James Asbury

I'll start with what I agree with, hah. Wrestling has been dead to me for a long time, basically, since Rock left, for me. I guess that's when the Attitude Era ended. I got tired of Triple H getting every fucking thing he wanted just because he was screwing Stephanie. And, it just, well…got boring to me and, watching your rants, it made me glad I stopped watching.

Second, Sherlock Holmes is an amazing movie. Trailer sold me. What I really, REALLY liked about it was that it was a Private Eye story. On tv, all you see is the ensemble crime dramas, i.e. CSI, Law and Order, and there's so damn many of the and they all just seem samey to me. I do like NCIS, but it's more for the characters, not the crimes. I'd just love to see a return of the Private Eye. Monk is…eh…I don't even know if that counts as a P.I show and I can't think of any others. But, Sherlock Holmes was a return to that genre and I hope it can bring about a resurgence of it.

Now, to Final Fantasy. I'm not going to rant about how you are wrong, Spoony. We just share a difference of opinion and I'm one (of the few, maybe?) of the fanbase that understands that not everyone is going to love the series or every entry. Personally, 8 is my second favorite. I still thought your review was hilarious, though and I can't wait to see the rest of the X review. Yes, I loved X also, haha. The only FF to disappoint me is 12. If you're going to have open field combat, don't base it off ATB. What's the point of having an open field battle system if it's not real time? Though, maybe, 4 years of WoW made me loathe it's likeness to an MMO.

After being disappointed with 12, 13 is like a breathe of fresh air. There isn't much about the game I don't like to be honest. I do gripe that you only control 1 character in combat, but the A.I. is smart enough to make up for it. I don't mind being thrown into a story without knowledge of anything and being told things in flashbacks. It only makes me more interested in figuring out why. The combat if fast paced and just outright awesome to me. The Crystarium isn't bad, but I Can't say I love it. It's better than that damn License Board in 12, imo.

You do bring up a good point. What ever did happen to just leveling up and getting boosts that way? I always think of a good point when it comes to the PS1 and beyond FF games. What happened to when characters mattered? Take 7 for example. Combat-wise, what's the difference between the characters? Weapon and Limit Break. Fundamentally, that's it! It's was that way in every FF since 7 besides 9. It's about the only gripe I've had with FF for the past 13 years, well, besides 12. Other than that, I've enjoyed every entry.

I've given this discussion my 2 cents a bit. I do disagree with you, Spoony, but I do understand the idea of differing opinions. So, I'm not going to be like many FF fans and bitch and moan at you for not liking them. I'll enjoy my FF games and still laugh at your reviews of them. Deal? ^_^

As someone who recently completed FFXIII and was very satisfied and entertained by the 45 hours I poured into it, I can't say your criticisms surprise me. I thought a lot of the same things, but I still think that XIII is fun and exciting and it is, for better or worse, a next-gen Final Fantasy game. I think the story of XIII is certainly no worse or more confusing than that of XII, which is in a league of its own in terms of taking a relatively basic plot and making it impossible to follow and/or give a shit about.

As for your annoyance with Vanille, well, YMMV. She does get better and less annoying as the game winds toward its conclusion, as does Hope. Then again, I get the feeling you won't be picking up XIII again for a good long while.

My opinion of FF13 Spoilers alert:

Just before someone ask, as of this writing I'm on my way to Ourba (or however you type it) and I'm going to play it to the end cause hell I wasted $60 on it, might as well make it worth every cent.

Yes as a lot of people said the game gets good at around 25-30 hrs, which is the 11th chapter, the 11th chapter out of 13.

Now all FF's have your running from point A to point B, but in this one you have no control of what you do on the way, other than smacking a mob or 2 along the way, or who the leader is I died more times when I was forced to use Hope as lead than almost any other time in the game, you have little or no control on who you want in your party or to explore the world until that magical 25th-30th hr when you land on Gran Pulse. Whats my problem with this, I'm a fan of old school FF (1-6) so it didn't take long for you to get to the outside and on your own, even 7,8 and 9 let you stretch your arms and enjoy the game world a bit, this one just drags you from one monster-filled dungeon to the next.

Some also say this is one of the Hardest of the series, yes it is, cause you basically have a level-cap via the spire grid mk2, you cant get stronger till you beat boss A, than you cant get any more stronger than that till you bear boss C ect, ect. So of course its hard to win a fight with one arm tied behind your back all the time, not to mention they tell you who your gonna use till that magical 25th hr (save elderon fights, which is a predetermined party no matter where you are)

Sazh is my favorite character only cause he's the most down-to-earth of them all, despite being the “comic relief” he gose though a nice range of emotions (confused, happy, murderous rage when he considers killing Vanille, and even suicidal at one point), and in the end just wants to save his son, like any father would.

Fang is an OK character, you don't see much development with her, Vanille is the game's fan-service chick, yes she's a major part of the story and yes she's basically the best healer in the game, but at the end of the day, to me, she just legal (she 19…though technically she's 519) fan-service. Light and Snow are great at best and tolerable at worst. Then there's Hope.

I don't like Hope, not at all, it's like someone at SE realized near the end that they had no angst-ridden teenage f-tard for people to connect to and tossed him in at the last moment, really other then his moms death, why is he here. I know he gets better later on, but it seemed like a waste of a character slot to me, or could have kept it a 5 characters and left it at that. (and shaved off a few hrs at that)

    Other mini grips:

A major villain isn't established until around chapter 8-9, out of a 13 chapter story….ya, it's the main villain (an Evil-Pope) but why take so long to tell me who the bad-guys are, the solders are just doing their jobs, and the Cocoon citizens, well are just jerks.
Why bother lvling up other jobs if mostly every excels at one, maybe 2 to mix things up but still by the time every character can use every job it becomes pointless, your not going to have the kids play tank, your not going to have Snow and Sazh heal and Light's set is fine as is, the only person that benefits is Fang cause shes good all-around.
and finally the games biggest crime.
No Riding Chocobos…really, even if I get one now its too late…next thing you'll tell me no Moogles too….oh wait…

Hmm, I had high hopes for XIII, I haven’t liked an FF game since VII and it looked really promising. You’re right on the tons of good RPGs thing, too. I personally find a good number of series to be better than Final Fantasy including Tales of…, Persona and Shin Megami Tensei as a whole.

And Spoony, make sure you stick with Persona 4, you wouldn’t believe just how good the story gets.

and final fantasy.. never liked it, never will,
peace of boring crap, to long to lame etc etc.

Noah, thanks for the vids though bro, alwasy cool watching you talk about this crap xD
but yeah, try to minimalise the wrestling stuff, once in the month or somthing could be nice?

oh btw, zombie nation isent sutch a bad game, think about it, your a floting head spitting on new york and eating zombies xD how cool's that xD:P

Yknow, I really liked FF12 too. The story was horrible, but the battle system itself was really good. I did a review of it in my blog (which i've linked in my website bit).

I really like these Vlogs. They're a good listen… ever thought of releasing them as podcasts?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/inuyashafan4everX4 Gonaz

Friday Night Smackdown shocked me within the first ten minutes. First of all, it was totally by chance that I even sat down to watch it. I turned on the television to have some background noise while I ate my dinner. First off, it has been some time since I watched wrestling (last time being before the Royal Rumble), and I was shocked to see Jericho with the title. (Didn't that jabroni lose his job or something a while back?) The fact he beat Edge shocked me even more. Then when Edge came out and the audience was cheering for Edge shocked me into oblivion. What the hell has happened? Edge was a heel and now he seems to be winning the hearts of the fans. Figuring that maybe his character might be getting a rewrite, I “edged” on. Not even two minutes later, I finally realized why you have been ranting about this crap called “wrestling” for as long as you have. I love the reviews you do, but one does not truly understand the pain and suffering you went through until you sit through an episode of this god-awful crap.

And the crap hit the fan when Jack Swagger became champion in front of my very eyes. WHY? WHAT? WHO in the hell thought it was a good idea to throw Jack Swagger into champion status overnight? I was sick to my stomach and couldn't finish eating. During the commerical break my friend came over and I ran past him the horrible incident that had just occurred. Agreeing that Swagger may be a fresh of breath air, we decided to give Smackdown another chance and keep watching.

Hey everyone look! A good match! John Morrison and R-Truth vs Crime Time. The match begins and my friend and I guess who might win, both agreeing it will be a close and interesting…WTF???? The match is over? In less than a minute, this “what should have been a good match that lasted at least 7-10 mins” is over…And on top of that, Crime Time gets in a skirmish and apparently may no longer be together. I turned the television off. I am not gonna sit here and watch this. I had paint drying in the next room I needed to watch. I personally don't mind if you rant on wrestling because I love listening to you do it. I just have to say kudos to you my friend. YOU HAVE BALLS!!!! How else could one stand through not just one hour, but two hours of this? To see something I loved watching every week back in the day fall so far, its disheartening.

And speaking of falling so far, Final Fantasy XIII. What's left to say that you haven't? I love Final Fantasy and will continue to do so. Personally VI and VII are my favorites, but there was something about each installment I liked (even FFX and XII). With each new game in the franchise, there was something different, be that materia or battle system, or mini games, what have you. Although Final Fantasy XIII is the sexiest piece of eye candy I have ever laid my eyes on, that's all it really is. Eye candy.

Even before the game came to American shores, there was a lot of complaints on the internet about those who imported a copy and then complained about how linear the game was. I gave FFXIII the benefit of the doubt, especially after Square-Enix came out and said why they made it linear, to get more in touch with the characters. To this extent, they managed to do okay. The characters are decent, although each has their own quirks. Fang was by far my favorite character of the game, followed by Sazh, last place goes to Hope. He just seemed to say cheesy cliched lines that even a kid of 10 would know is uber lame. With the linear structure of the game, I agree that it felt confined, not being able to branch off with no real choices. But again, Square-Enix's reasoning allowed me to ignore the (minor) annoyance and play on. The story is mediocre at best. There were plenty of plot holes that could have used better explanation, even after I used the Datalog to research the subject. Although there were some intense moments, most of it was monotonous and one may have just wanted to skip the crap (I didn't because it was my first time playing through.) Even the main villains of the game…I just didn't give a crap about. But it's actually been that way with every FF since VIII. Edea and Ultimecia from 8…Kuja from 9…Seymour, Jecht and Sin from 10…and Vayne (if that's his name) from 12. Dysley and Orphan just don't stand out like Sephiroth or Kefka.

Music-wise, most of the score was nice, although there were several songs that sounded similar, just in different tempos. The battle system and Paradigms were interesting and fun for the most part to participate in. Forming strategies before battle was a breath of fresh air. But after a while it kind of became stale, especially when farming for gil or CP near the end of the game or post-game. Which brings me to Gran Pulse.

A lot of people, as you commented, say it gets better around 25-30 hour mark. While one may be able to change party members and do mission side quests, I didn't see any real difference. Granted, yes, the world became a little more open to explore, and it was nice to run around and do the missions, but it didn't have much “substance”. I don't have an exact word for it but it's kinda like when one says you either have it or you don't…Well FFXIII doesn't have it.

This was Square-Enix's biggest mistake with this title. They literally tried to fool you into thinking there was depth to this game ie the Upgrade and Crystarium but there's not. With the Crystarium grid, it was as you said, very limited in choices. In the end, it really came down to who you really wanted in your party to fight with. The only reason it might be a difficult choice is for that one special move that each character possesses, whether that be Vanille's Death spell, Fang's Highwind, Lightining's Army of One, etc. With the upgrade, you will spend plenty of hours farming for gil and components to upgrade your weapons. The only real reason anyone in their right mind would do this is for the trophy/achievement. It is one of the last trophies I need and I really don't feel like getting it. I might throw in an hour here and there, but I'm not dedicating myself to it like I did for the rest of the game. Take out the Upgrade system and the amount of time leveling up the Crystarium, there's only roaming around and side quests (this includes the chocobo digging).

For the first time in Final Fantasy history, I don't plan on replaying this any time soon. On Final Fantasy XII, I played the game all the way through at least twice, each time amassing over 100 hours on each file, enjoying the entire experience. I didn't feel the same with this installment. Hell, more than half the time, it felt like I was playing Metal Gear Fantasy or Final Gear Solid. The only sad thing about that comparison is that at least with Snake, there was more exploring early on in the game. Final Fantasy XIII wasn't a horrible game and it's still good enough to be considered a Final Fantasy game in my eyes. I just hope that Square-Enix learns from this and improves on it. Keep it pretty but breathe some magic back into the series. It's understandable to want to appeal to both old and new fans of the genre. But keep what we love about the games, and improve when needed. Quit worrying about having a song added into the game (My Hands wasn't a bad song, but was it really necessary to have it included in the game?)

Enough about Final Fantasy, let's wrap it up. Sherlock Holmes was a great film, I thought Downey Jr. did a great Holmes and Law was a great Watson. It was fun, witty and charming all at once. I would love to see what board games you are playing, you kinda peaked my interest with that. Persona 3 and 4 are a couple of the greatest RPGs I have ever played in my life, and I don't blame you if you put down the FFXIII and throw in some SMT. Looking forward to your annoucements, and take care of yourself.

  • http://gametastical.wordpress.com/feed/ Trace

You know, it comes down to the fact that ffs, Final Fantasy just needs to go back to it's old formula and bring out new plots for each one. It really isn't as hard as they make it out to be. Hell, that's what the Tales of series of games do and they're very enjoyable JRPGs (especially the latest one for 360/PS3).

I hear they're looking at sandbox games for the next one that isn't the MMORPG and I seriously want to slap the creator's hands and go “NO. BAD.” – They don't NEED to go that far. Take the god damn system from VI/VII and work a plot around it. I don't understand why it's so difficult a concept for them!

I didn't hate FFXIII. But if it'd just been like a normal freaking FF game, it would have been AMAZING. Instead, the experience left me going “meh”, which isn't how it's supposed to be.

Completely agree with you on ff xiii. I was hugely let down by this game. Not because I thought that it would be a great new entry to follow up ff7 and ff8, but beacuse I hoped (really hoped) that atleast it couldn't get worse than ff xii. Sadly, I was mistaken. I'm still going to finish the game 'cause I bought it, but I'm in no hurry man. I've been playing for somewhat 40 hours, and 'yes' it opens up a bit after 25-30 hours of gameplay. Those steppes (huge open area with pretty cool encounters) is the only fun to be had in ff xiii (or some can probably enjoy paradigm for 60 hours+; I can not). This is the second ff where I couldn't stand any of the charcters (last one was ff ix, in ff x I had Auron and i found myself laughing a couple of times of Balthier(?) in ff xii). I thought I would stand Snow judging from the trailers, but he's a fucking idiot. I'd rather hear Vanille talk for 24h than listening to one of his over-the-top insanely stupid lines. Okok, looking forward to your next ff x review, or whatever game review you're doing next Noah. Thanks once again for a good vlog.

I must say, I agree entirely. I too, have been struggling through XIII – and you know what? I just don't want to anymore. It's like you said, it's bad in a way that's sad, it really could have been so good.

I also really wanted to bitch slap the emo out of Hope.

  • Cronocke

I liked 12 too, Spoony. Mostly how the combat took place in sorta real-time, with enemies who reacted to you in the area map instead of having random encounters on a separate screen, and how you could control the characters more directly.

Granted, it played more like an MMO in some ways, but I didn't really mind that.

It was more the characters, story, and the way level-up customization made the characters utterly interchangeable that I didn't like.

    Among other things.

I don't think Square-Enix is going to learn anything, because no matter what they do, the Final Fantasy series makes them good money. They probably think they're doing people a favor by trying to reinvent the wheel with each game.

Spoony, if you're jonesing for Ring of Honor, their weekly show gets put on Youtube (generally 10+ days after the fact but if you're not watching the PPVs, it doesn't really matter). Search for “ring of honor hdnet” and you'll find it.

Also, they are a japanese gaming company. There has been a change in japanese culture over the past decade and it shows in the gaming industry more now then it did 10 years ago and they tend to focus on stuff many western gamers don't really care for that much. So it's starting to become a difference in culture thing I think at least.

I personally have a big problem with current games coming out which focus too much on graphics and looking pretty. Take modern warfare, its a nice game, shooting is fun and intuitive and the storyline was interesting.

But the game is suppose to be about warfare, yet you get no choice on ammo, particular upgrades, in fact you have to grind levels to get upgrades, and some of the requirements are just a joke and even then thats only for multi-player, which I won't touch with a bargepole becuase it has street fighter 4 syndrome where all the players on the otherside either play the game 24/7 or cheat. You can't even choose your equipment for missions, or pick up different ammo, upgrades.

For all of the graphical sparkles in the game, it totally fails at truly equipping you for what the game sets out to play, war. In fact its not even war, you play an elite team of about 4-5 people and near the end its just you and one other guy. And one more thing, co-op play, old retro games like Srg.Chaos, Project Eden and even Halo were excellent becuase you could play with your friends, it allowed you to both or all experience the adventure and action together so that you could talk about it afterwards (which is probably why Halo does so well), and not just online but the actual f-ing story.

A lot of games these days just paint a very nice picture instead of focusing on a story as well, I would be happy to play a FF7 graphical version of FF13 if freedom to explore was added.

Oh and you should play FF9 when you get the chance, its plays a bit like FF5 in style, very good story, (well as they go). In fact although I agree some of the FF10 characters are a little annoying, I really liked the artistic style and colour that went into it, plus a nice story and puzzles, actually I really liked the puzzles

Different topic, I watched the watchmen yesterday and out of rickshaw(I know its spelt differently) the comedian and the guy who talks about how he likes Alexander one second then gos psycho over pharohs, I though every other character was a prissy little bitch who had the mental age of a 5-year old, I mean the part where BSMD girl (who for some reason uses mascara instead of a mask) whines at Dr Smurf (who we know is an asshole becuase he left his wife becuase she got old), he gives her a really complex and intelligent answer, at which she brakes (knowing that physics 101 states that air cannot move in a vacuum therefore the vibration should of stopped) his santuary of solitude and he goes “you make a vaild point”….Bullshit!

And the fact super Alan titmarsh is such an f-ing pussy (his suit is totally not aero-dynamic and I can only guess he got is powers from being bit by a radioactive blue tit) and goes head over heels at getting Dr Smurfs sloppy seconds, you could seriously swap Seifer and Squall for Dr Smurf and Super Alan Titmarsh. If you took out Dr. Smurf, BSMD girl and lady, then the story is actually awesome.

I had high hopes for XIII, but I guess Square have just lost their magic. I'm pretty skeptical on how they're handling Deus Ex 3.

By the way Spoony, make sure you stick with Persona 4, you wouldn't believe how good the story gets.

I finished FF XIII and I felt SO relieved when I was finished, I actully checked when I started to have “fun” and it sure as hell wasn't 20 and a half hours worth waiting fun, it was more meh fun.
I entered the game with bad attitude, I admit that but I got it cheaper and I atlest thought I would get an ok game.
I seriously couldnt belive how dissapointed I was.

on a diffrent note: I actully got persona 4 (my first shin megami tensei game) after spoony talked about it and I LOVED it, I honestly couldn't belive how much I liked it. ever since then I got ALL the newer shin megami tensei games and trying geting the older one but it is REALLY hard living in EU and that stupid region lock -.-
god I love that series now :D

Final Fantasy XIII…I don't have it yet, but I plan on getting it. I've known the story's nonsensical and that it's extremely linear long before this vlog, yet I'm fairly certain that it will entertain me anyway. It's basically, from what I've seen, just an upgraded Final Fantasy X. Linear paths, grid system, several annoying characters, a story that tries too hard to be deep and epic, etc. However, I managed to enjoy X and even X-2, amazingly enough.

As for XII…I actually had the reaction you're having to XIII: It bored me out of my mind. It's not a bad game, just…the combat system was such a blatant lie to me. I thought it would be like Kingdom Hearts, which had a GREAT combat system that was actually real time. FFXII's is just giving the illusion of real time. In reality, it's the ATB-styled turn-based system of the PSX FF's, only without the “SWSHHHH” battle transition screen.

Then there was the grinding. The incessant, mind-numbingly tedious grinding. I remember one part of the game where I needed cash, so I went into the mines (This was early in the game) and started LOOOOOONG chain of Skeleton kills for like two fucking hours. When I maxed out the drops, I sold them off for some decent money, which was quickly burned at the various shops in town. I had to do grinding like that throughout the whole game. I mean sweet fucking Jesus, that's annoying.

I will, however, say what I loved about XII: The monster hunts, which I thought were excellent side quests that pitted you against very unique and fun mobs, and the soundtrack. The music in XII is a-fucking-mazing. I even got the OST and listen to it to this day. There's not a single track I don't like, which is just incredible.

Anyway, it's nice to see you're bringing more stuff our way, and I look forward to all of it. And despite how much it may hurt you both physically and emotionally, I hope you get back to your FFX review eventually. Seriously, the way you tear into that game is nothing short of comedic genius. Keep it up.

Nice log, Spoony. The linearity problems you’re talking about pretty much describe my problems with FFX. I don’t have the aggressive hate you possess for all the main characters (not, at least, when I played it the first time through), but the feeling that I was playing a movie crossed my mind many a time. It’s the greatest flaw in the game.
I have one exception to make with you, and it’s something that has bothered me a lot. You go on about how the last good FF game was FFVII, but you haven’t played FFIX. You played it for a couple of hours, but turned it off because you didn’t like the design. I know it’s not the most original game in the world, but it’s probably the most fun I’ve had in a game where you engage with a story and a group of characters. I understand the response to the design, but I think you should try it properly before you lay into the series so much.

  • memph

You said that your done with wrestling? And needed to watch something new? How about UFC. Watch the PPV on April tenth. And watch for Anderson Silva and BJ Penn. Those guys are true champions. And it'll probably be funny to you to see Brock Lesnar as the Heavyweight Champ. And Joe Rogan is the shit as a commentator.

    Keep up the good work.

  • sbaby1

Alright. I finally got around to watching this. Not surprisingly, you didn't like the game. But honestly, I can't really blame you for not liking the game. You at least have better reasons than alot of the trolls on GameFAQs, who for the most part all hate it because there aren't any towns, or because you only control the party leader.

That said, I liked it more than you did. But alot of what you mentioned had to do with issues I DID have with the game (such as Vanille, who stays annoying until about Chapter 11 and Snow's Reb Brown impersonations). However, I would still recommend at least finishing the game, if for no other rason than to say you finished it and didn't like it. Reviewing a game less than halfway through just makes the review feel unfinished. Not to mention Chapter 11 is where ALL of the sidequests are.

  • wcthesecret

I thought Wrestlemania 26 was good not great. But WWE is not perfect…but it's not unwatchable. Blah blah blah, I say this a lot and no one give a shit. And people vote me down because they are Spoony fanboys and would suck his dick for a nickle!
    Whew, I'm good now.
So, FFXIII…I have no desire to play the game. I liked FF up until FFX. It all went downhill after X-2, IMO. I just can't get excited anymore. The Final Fantasy name seems to have been dragged through the mud.

  • ThereseBanning

Vince has wisely gone back to turning wrestling into a kid's product for years now. For all the faults he has, he's definitely a savvy businessman. Meanwhile, us old school fans just have to move on, or just be a bitter smark that bitches about everything. Even ROH has strayed from its mainly wrestling product.

Persona is a great series. I don't know why you insist on continuing with FF. Most of the old school FF lovers (1-7) can't even play the recent games if they want to. It's torture. An hour with Tidus made me break the disc in 2.

Please condense your “Dr. Insano” and various character work to separate videos. Put your necessary TWGTG plugs in them too as fodder.

And people say FFX was linnear, at least there was town exploration. You could go into a few different shops. like a weapons shop, an armory, a sundries shop, and so on. I was a bit pissed when you just get a floating computer chip, and you shop there. Even in FF7, you got to explore at least a little bit of Midgar, mostly the slums, and the shinra building, but you did explore most of the other cities. I can ignore the sphere grid stuff, I don't know why, I just can. I always compared Vanille to Selphie, and react to both the same way. I'm both charmed, and repulsed by her character at the same exact time.
I do like the game for some unbeknownst reason, but I do feel it's certainly not good enough to create a limited edition 360 system bundle.
Well, I still have A LOT of JRPG's to finish, FF4, 3, 9, 10, Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Cross to name a few.

  • Booze Zombie

I think anyone can like FF12 for the simple fact that Fran and her ass inhabite it's universe…

But yes, I've heard many, many, many people complain of FF13's amazing lack of freedom… I am not surprised to hear you talking about it as well, but just because I am not surprised does not mean I am not amused.
    I was amused.

Good stuff, Spoony, keep it up.

  • shinea_iggy

Spoony, you are such a trooper…after FFX, i don't know how you can find it in yourself to play XIII…i HATED FFX…X-2 was quite decent, I will admit…although I haven't really played much of the earlier ones, so i don't have too much to compare to, but it was ok…FFX, i couldn't make it through it. I was like you, were every time tidus opened my mouth i was like”OMG SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UUUUPPPP!” I don't even want to attempt XIII. BTW, i probably have already sad this before, but if you are looking for a new, interesting game to try out, look up Star Ocean 3: Til The End of Time…it is amazing! Original, great storyline, and the fighting is really exciting. It is a two disk-er, but it is well worth it! Just throwing it out there!!! :)

I agree with this. UFC is actually a lot of fun to watch, especially at a bar with a crowd and your buds. Not to mention all the fighting is real and pretty damn brutal at times. And no cheesy acting, either.

There's always Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which was confirmed to be more action oriented, have a world map, AND have you fly around the world map in your… flying machine thing (whatever the fuck the name of those are).

I'm hoping it gets finished before the end of the year, maybe we'll see actual gameplay at E3 (although I doubt it). This may also be the first rated M Final Fantasy we may see.

Snow is not the only character to use his fist to fight in Final fantasy games. Tife, Amarant and Zell used their fist if I've not mistaken they also have monk class like Sabin

I'm sorry Noah you wrong that on issue

  • pawcanada84

I completly agree with you about XII's battle system, though I would add “with the ability to run around, which does nothing to help you”. Prior to getting the game, even review I read said it was a huge step forward, and when I heard you ould run around I was under the impression it would actually affect the gameplay. When I first got the game, I ran as far away from a monster to see if it would affect the damage from the attack. I took the same damage. I then tried to hide behind a rock, again to see if this would change the amount of damage I took. Result – No change. While I never had a problem with the random battles and/or the old battle system, either make it like Rogue Galaxy (which IMO is what XII's battle system SHOULD have been) or keep it like the classic one. Having “the old timed system with the option to run around” is not good in my eyes. Maybe having the characters line up isn't realistic but at least the row option allows for a bit of strategy. Much like FFVIII, it seemed like XII abolished that idea.

Of course I got about four hours in before I lost the will to play the game.

Anyway, I personally liked the Sphere Grtid in FFX. Though it was linear at first I liked the way it would open up once you completed a character's “section”, allowing you to mix and match characters' abilities. I create some interesting and fun mixtures thanks to that. Still, if you don't like it Noah I'm interested in hearing your opinion (though fact fans might like to know the European version of FFX (we got extras due to having to wait about six extra months) included an alternative, more “advanced” Sphere Grid).

    You forgot :
    - Tifa in FF7
    - Sabin in FF6
    - The monk job in FF5
    - Yang in FF4
    - I hate the DS version of FF3 (the only one i played) but there is a job with hand fighting too i think
    - karateka-like character in FF1

But what he means is that he fights a giant machina with tons of guns, lasers and bombs with his poor naked hands ;) ! In the olders FF, the technology wasn't so developped, so hand-fighting wasn't so odd.

    • http://www.facebook.com/emran.ismail Emran Qadir Ismail

Technically Snow wears gloves on his hand

Tifa had to fight giant robots and monsters same with Zell in FF8 world they had more robots than FF7

  • TheFeydakin

I never played any of the FF games other than 7. It was great and although I never finished it 7 at times got annoying(I only first played it a couple of years ago). I dunno, I just think that the series is very weird and tween/teen targeted audience level explicitly. I mean even the art is weird, and the artists at square love making male characters look feminine which is kind of messed up. But it seems people that have played this series think that it is too linear(at least in the more recent games). Mind you I have no problem with being linear. Splinter cell believe it or not is a very linear game from the level design stand point. The levels aren't like a maze but there is only one direction that you can make progress in; moving forward. Everything else about it is anything but linear like how to clear a room or if you want to go for stealth over combat or even all non lethal. I cant imagine liking a game like the one that Noah is describing. But that is the fallacy of an RPG, that you spend many hours in repetitious combat scenarios leveling up or questing for loot/booty against either really easy enemies or super hard ones just so you can conquer the next boss fight. You amass so much 'stuff'(spells, weapons, special items etc) that by the end you(well at least I) think to myself, why did I just waste my time doing something in a game where I could have been playing something else and at least get an adrenaline rush and still have time for other things in my day? Then it hits me, I play the games solely to watch the story unfold stage by stage. I didn't enjoy the game for anything else other than a feeling of utter relief after beating a boss with a strategy or beating it waay before I should have if only from dumb luck. But that is exciting as it gets. All in all it seems like FF is still a profitable franchise, but as a result of such the effects of keeping its branding have it in a creative rut like a lot of people have complained about. It happens because there is only one shop creating FF and there is no incentive to make it better than the competitor because regardless it will sell itself whether or not you like it or hate it. Final Fantasy is a 'household name' to the average gamer.

  • TheFeydakin

I told my old man about the UFC(we had watched it a few years ago when it was on a different channel).

  • redguy

honestly I found FFIX very good, simple and fun. It had some plot holes true but the story was so lighthearted it honestly didn't really matter or didn't really bother me. The characters were fun, and yes half of the games world was full of anthropomorphic animals but it was more along the lines of a Disney cartoon or Dragonball. And I liked XII too, other than the abundance of non-characters and the easily abuseable Gambit system it was rather enjoyable, XIII not so much.

Oh and yes please do show off them board games.

  • witheringsanity

but is there a point to chocobo riding? i mean in other FF's you ride them to quickly get to different towns and avoid random encounters, neither of which are in 13. Is it just chocobo riding for the fun?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1160661716 Roger Civit

Keep in mind that Japanese gamers/nerds read a shitload (because, you know, they are hardcore) of info on magazines and on the internet about the game, its characters, background, world, races and that stuff, so the programmers assume (and they are wrong) that there is no need for exposition.

IMHO, that's JRPG for you all, in a nutshell. I got tired of them after FFX2. Linearity, ludicrous storytelling, grinding and a complete lack of fun and interest.
Anyway, they knew this game would sell a lot of copies, so they knew they could get lazy, and they will keep doing it because FF games sell a lot. I guess we buyers are to blame.

I was inspired to pick up Persona 4 after watching your vlog about it.

A few months and 80+ in-game hours later, I've beaten it with the “true” ending.

Finish it, Spoony. You will NOT be disappointed.

Pratchett FTW. Of course, I didn't really like his last book. I hope Nutt goes the way of Eskarina Smith.

  • popov89

I've never really been a big FF person, as a kid I heard rumors about FF7 and fooled myself into really liking it. I'm not saying it's bad but looking back at it, the game just never stuck with me. I have friends that worship the ground any FF game walks on but I'm completely neutral on the series.

Persona 4 is one of my favorite games and you should really finish it. The overall story and moral is sort of lackluster but the real pull are the characters and their little stories. The standouts were Ai's, Kou's and Rise's in my opinion. I did rush through it, I was pushed for time seeing as my PS2 was left at home while I was away at school, and enjoyed the hell out of it. 100 hours of my life that I do not regret. Also, Teddie is awesome and I do not understand your hatred about the guy. Your hate for him is un-bear-able man…okay, his puns were bad but whatever.

Resonance of Fate is awesome, hard as all hell but awesome. It's something new but reminds me of FF in a way. The awesome art style but I am a sucker of Steam Punk so I guess that's me.

  • http://twitter.com/XunralHelps Ben Wolpoff

Nearly everything in FFXIII gets better. I mean, yeah it takes like 20-30 hours to get there, but in the course of the game the characters develop pretty well and eventually you get thrown into a really open-ended environment. I'm not saying thats ideal, or even acceptable, and it's totally up to people on an individual level whether that is worthwhile. Ultimately, I warmed to it.

I don't really have that much of a problem with datalogs. I mean, if you don't have a character who can be that everyman, it's a decent alternative to having characters choke out exposition for no reason other than to keep the audience up to speed, which is a personal pet peeve of mine.

The bottom line, for me, is that it's Final Fantasy. I mean, there's nothing wrong with not liking Final Fantasy. You're either down with it or you're not. If you stopped enjoying the series around FF7, then that's about half of the entire Final Fantasy run that you don't like all that much. I'd say that pretty well constitutes not liking Final Fantasy. And that's absolutely fine. The significance of it is that there's a lot of plot elements and tropes that fans of the series appreciate, that non-fans will get aggravated by. Backwards storytelling, and the like. Again, there's nothing wrong with either liking or disliking it, but if you don't like the series itself, a review of the series isn't going to be terribly useful for people who do. That sounds condescending. Pretend I worded that better.

It's like doing a review of a Metal Gear Solid game if you can't stand in-jokes or metahumor. The review will pretty much consist of “What the hell?! They're everywhere!”

  • joluoto

That FFVII is the last good FF game I wouldn't agree with. IX was good. That VIII and X were disappointements is true, and after X-2 you just knew Final Fantasy was being flushed down the toilet. Since that I haver refused to touch Final Fantasy and what I have heard about XII and XIII from my friends only confirm my position. The new FF games are not worth playing.

  • Tai_MT

Wow, that's amazing. I got tired of the game at the same point you did. Well, okay, I went a bit further. But, really, the game is TOO LINEAR. I didn't put a lot of hope or stock into this game when I bought it, so about 23 hours in, I wasn't disappointed that it never really “picked up” at all. I actually watched my friend play it, and it doesn't get that much better. It basically just bounces around from the characters deciding to destroy Cacoon and then deciding not to. And they change their minds so often, that the already convoluted story gets even HARDER to follow. I asked my friend what he was supposed to be doing, and he couldn't even tell me. I mean, jeez… I thought the story from FFXII was convoluted and messed up… This one is even worse…

I have to admit i'm a big a final fantasy game, and although the game is linear, i still like it. The best advice i can give to anyone who has played rpgs and then plays this game, forget it's involved with final fantasy, it has nothing to do with rpgs. It's your average run down the hallway and kill all the monsters so you can get stronger and kill bigger monsters. If you play the game thinking of it this way, it's pretty damn good, still linear and hard, but good. And spoony, give the game a little more time cause i promise, the non-linear part is coming up.

  • strife4284

Despite the fact that this game is very linear, I like it a lot. I think the best advice i can give anyone who has played rpgs and then plays this game is to forget it belongs in the final fantasy series and to forget it's an rpg. Think of it as your average “run down this hallway, kill all the monsters along the way so you can get stronger and kill bigger monsters, and then watch some more of the story”. If you play the game like that, it's pretty damn good, still linear, but good, especially if you can find a way to put aside your complaints and just enjoy the story, because i think final fantasy 13 has the second best story of any of the games. And spoony, give the game a little more time, because the non-linear part of the game comes along about 30 hours in. You might not be able to make it that far, but try.

  • Solitair

Sadly, he's already stated in a previous vlog that he can't believe Star Ocean has fans. He didn't mention a specific game, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

xD I was just listening to “Witches Abroad” by Terry Pratchett before going online! Great video, good to hear that youre cutting back on the wrestling!

  • Rumeziel

Oh shit, one more thing. And I don't mean to be a devil's advocate or anything to Spoony or any of the viewers, but would you consider doing like a head-to-head review of the latest WWE game vs. the latest TNA game? (when and if that one comes out)

Either way I just wanted to get your opinion on some of these games. Like WWE's story-creator or custom finisher modes or perhaps just observe which games feel more “natural” to a normal wrestling show. Or maybe which game is a better fit for customizing your own wrestler.

REALLY!?! How did I miss that? This saddens me…maybe he was talking about the first one, because yeah, that one did blow, lol…but if not, thats ok *whispers* I can look past that!

I liked FF12 also, I'm sort of surprised you did since you hated FF10, which I thought was alright (except of course for Blitzball and the entire existence of Tidus, and how the game was pretty silly overall, especially with Wakka attacking with a blitzball and etc etc).

Of course, anything that pares down the whole random encounter system that's been tired since FF8, random encounters were starting to really grind me down and keep me from playing any more of the games, by the end of FF10 I stopped leveling up entirely because I was so tired of it, and of course I didn't do any of the game padding ultimate weapon quests.

I'm with you Spoony! If a game takes that much time to get good, or form some sort of interest, I simply won't touch it. There are far better games out there, and with an expanded variety, to glean entertainment from. Dragon Age: Origins, for instance, although long, was interesting out of the gate. It didn't need to take 20-25 hours to formulate a story. I hate to say it but it seems that the Final Fantasy series is finally showing signs of aging thus diminishing.

  • kostamonsta

    Cheers Spoony!

  • KeiMontague

Hey, Noah. I'm mostly with you on your feelings on XIII, and on the Final Fantasy series in general. I was around two-thirds into XIII, and was about to give up on it due to the utterly linear gameplay, when suddenly and genuinely unexpectedly, I was exposed to what I felt was “the rest of the game” — a giant, wide-open area that takes 10 minutes to traverse, sort of like (gasp) a world map. And there's still a story, still point A to B, but I feel remarkably free, derailed so to speak, but in a good way.

Anyway, from one Final Fantasy fan to another, I thought you'd like to know Square wants to take “Final Fantasy” in another direction, as well as a general excuse for XIII's linearity. You can read about it here:

    http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/03/13/square…

In closing, I'm hoping it's Square wanting to take it back to it's roots — medieval perhaps, or cyberpunk like VII would be alright. I hope they get rid of guns, especially if they're fatal outside battle, but inside battle they don't mean much. But that's just me. Keep on gamin'.

I thought FF X was great. XII sucked balls but man X was great. When games weren't really cutting it for me and PC gaming was in the toilet i picked up X and played 12 hours a day. Mini games, sidequests, combat everything!

Actually, I really like it when you discuss wrestling. I know that not everyone likes it, but you're one of the “smart marks” out there that seems to understand it beyond the John Cena/Ultimate Warrior mentality, so I find your booking views (for lack of a better phrase) interesting. Still, at any rate, keep up the good work!

  • TheAgeOfTheFall

WM was sooo boring and I am liking FFXIII to a point right now and I also think its a little to ” new player” freindly in the fact that whats the point of many, many save points if you can replay any battle at any time?!

  • TheAgeOfTheFall

sorry for a double post but if your looking for some new wrestling check out JAPW or maybe CZW to a point has some good stuff not just the crazy death match shit and also Chikara is also good stuff as well also IWA-Ec has some good stuff sometimes as well

  • tarotflame

Well, the game hasn't completely done me in yet, but I'm going to beat it. Why, cause I forked out the money for it so I'm going to beat it (And seeing as I managed to push through Infinite Undiscovery, this should be easy). But there is one thing that's constantly going through my head as I play. The game just gives me this urge to play another game, not because it's like “Oh god I'm so bored I want to anything else” it's because they keep saying “Cocoon Cocoon Cocoon” over and over and over that it's brought up this urge to play Jade Cocoon again. Unfortunately I lost my copy years ago and not until now have I even thought about it.

I still need to get through P3 though, so close to the end before I'll start on P4 but now I'm REALLY looking forward to it.

Ah… Another gunblade. The closest you get to a real-life effective gunblade is the bayonette used during civil wars and the world wars. Guess Square just wanted to bring back the good ol' hilariousness…

Thank you my dear spoonyone for the review on ff13.you said everything i wanted to and more effective arguments about how much crap the game final fantasy 13 really is.i loved the part were you said why dont they just open there robots mouths and tell them there focus!! lol i thought the same damn thing.the only reason i finished this game is because i have a code.my code is no matter how bad a final fantasy game is i will play it and beat it.why you may ask? well after final fantasy 7 some where deep inside me i still have a minor shred of hope that they will make a good final fantasy game someday.that and i have lost my fucking mind i suppose.keep up the great work spoons

I'd say FF XIII is the best so far, this is coming from someone who's played almost every main Final Fantasy game but never bothered to finish one. Being thrown into a crazy world with all kinds of weird stuff and not being told much about it drew me in even more, and everything is explained, except the over-all back story, but I think the mystery helps add realism. Additionally, I found all the characters extremely likable and well developed and the battle system was fantastic. Every Final Fantasy is pretty linear too, the only difference is this game lacks a true over world, but that's nothing I really miss.

    • Anonymous

I like being thrown into a plot where you don’t know what the hell is going on, but only if it’s done right. FFXIII is an example of doing that wrong. In most games I’ve played, and in any work of fiction that just threw you into the plot that I’ve read/seen, you got at least SOME idea of what was going on. You got world background, information on what was going on in the present, and character development that also revealed their past, but FFXIII, at best, gives you enough to just barely have a plot. This is, of course, excluding the walls of text they occasionally give you that explains basic and key places and characters. You don’t create mystery by having it so nothing at all is explained or known past the fact that something exists. You create it by having some sort of mildly explained plot with mildly explained characters, and have mystery from there.

All weapons in ff 13 have advantages and disadvantages. The first weapon is as good as any, but as a matter of reference, use a guide to see the perks.

Also, to make things less annoying, just buy 40 of any organic upgrade (symbol is a claw) for a x3 multiplier, and then use a shitload of a digital upgrades at once (symbol is a screw).

If it makes you feel better, ~22 hours in, you get ff 12 styled freedom.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Borean/100000041163314 Michael Borean

If FF13 is the best final fantasy, then the world is dead. I'm sorry dude, but theres no way. Realism, in a Final Fantasy game is uncalled for. Thats what dungeons and dragons is for.

I will agree that all Final Fantasy games are linear, but there was still a choice of where you wanted to go. Hell, in FF6 you had all sorts of choices that while they rarely changed what happened in the end, gave you the feeling of choice, and that you were actually making a differance. I don't see or feel that in FF13 at all. I just wish to point out, that being thrown into a crazy world with all kinds of wierd stuff and not being told much about it, is the premise for 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, tactics. FF13 is not anything even remotely anything differant from the previous games, except for the fact that its a good bit worse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordan.biedul Jordan Biedul

“in the end, gave you the feeling of choice,”

In the end, you end up doing the exact same thing no matter what, you see the same ending sequence, the same everything.

All the Final Fantasy games have crazy weird stuff, pretty much since VII, and frankly XIII is the only one so far that I think has been coherent the whole way through without unrealistic plot interruptions and side quests.

  • magus12000bc

The funny thing about all of this is, I keep hearing how innovative Final Fantasy XIII is and I really couldn't disagree more. The whole time I was playing this digital shit smear, I kept thinking that this played like a really bad rehash of the Grandia series. Between the battle system to how you raise your characters, it just seems like a scaled down version of just about any Grandia game.

And the thing is, it even shares some of the same faults. Grandia 2 and 3, for example, are linear as fuck. Between both of those games there is only one sidequest. Grandia 2 had one near the end of the game and Grandia 3 had none that I could find at all through my playthrough of it.

So I personally keep wondering how many people that have worked on Grandia 3 after Square bought into the series worked on this game as well. Because it felt so damn familiar.

  • ff78cs

your joking right? so you mean to tell me at after playing for 5 hours you understood what was going on? i did not even understand what was going on till about 25 30 hours in.to me that does not add up to being “coherent” sorry.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordan.biedul Jordan Biedul

It's like like you're decoding the bible or something, it's a pretty straight-forward story. Yeah, about 30 hours in the point of all you have done is revealed to you, but the narrative up until then is perfectly coherent, without the datalog. I think the game could have used an prologue of some kind, like, if they had just taken the prologue form the manual and had that narrated by Vanille in the beginning, but the game's main narrative is pretty self-explanatory.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordan.biedul Jordan Biedul

I'm big fan of the Grandia series, and I think one of the reasons why SquareEnix published Grandia III was because Enix published the first two, possibly X-treme was well, in Japan. I think the changes made in III were to make it more marketable, but in my opinion, the first two were much better because they were more original and less like a Final Fantasy game.

I think XIII does a lot of neat things as far as the battle system goes, but I think two key limitations were the in system are the inability to manage paradigms in-battle and the inability to switch the party leader in battle, these two simple changes would have made it perfect. It's a really fun system either way, and I think the idea of Paradigm Shifts and the new limit-break/stagger system are a lot of fun, but it is very similar to Grandia, which is, I think a good thing, because Grandia's battle system were the best turn-based systems.

  • magus12000bc

Grandia 1 was published by a company “ESP”. I could find no information on that company at all. I'm looking at my Imported Saturn copy of the game right now and see that the acronym stands for “Entertainment Software Publishing”. Not a very inventive name but I'm fairly certain that they're not a subsidiary of Enix.

Grandia 2, both the origanal Dreamcast version and that horrible PS2 port were published by Ubi Soft.

Enix apparently didn't get their mits on the series until Xtreme, of which I personally don't own and haven't played yet. But I did hear that Mark Hamill plays one of the voiceover roles in it so that may be worth picking up on that merit alone.

  • graylord

I think everyone in these comments are missing the point why Squall's gunblade was ridiculous.
It's not because it would be like a gun with a bayonet, you would break your wrist if you tried to swing it due to holding it with a gun grip that's shaped almost 90% degrees down from the blade.
Lightning's gunblade is actually shaped like a sword however. But that again makes the gun part quite useless.

By the way, the game opens up a HUGE area to do side missions and explore later-

  • enesmemic

I may be in the minority here, but I hope you continue to do a wrestling vlog every once in a while. I don't watch wrestling anymore (I gave up on it sometime in the mid-nineties), but I love listening to you demolish TNA week after week. Perhaps its the fun in watching a multimillion-dollar enterprise run so incompetently, but whatever it is it makes for good entertainment. At the very least, you have to do a vlog when Samoa Joe finally escapes from the ninjas.

Also, the Final Fantasy series has lost its way so completely I think it's gone for good. The only good FF games still coming out are the re-releases of the 16-bit games. Sigh…

  • wozz13

Final Fantasy XIII is a disappointment. Way too linear, a much better RPG style game is Yakuza 3 on PS3, you should check that out, loving it sooo much more than FFXIII.

    Agree that Sherlock Holmes rocked!!!

  • malestrithe

I am guess the safe style that the WWE is doing right now stems from the fact that Linda McMahon is running for the senate this year, to take over Chris Dodd's seat. The WWE is cleaning up its image because even tough she no longer works for the company, she is still a McMahon and they are wrestling as far as the U.S. is concerned.

This is Vince's token gesture to prevent her from getting to embarrassed by the company.

    Hi,

First thing, I really really like your stuff, big fan of yours!

I pretty want to comment about, of course, you Final Fantasy 13 “review”. As, too, a big fan of Final Fantasy games, I pretty much hated Final Fantasy from X, which was, maybe the worst game I've ever played(in my opinion, I know there's really bad games, but that game touches me personally) and even if you have pointed out most of the thing that make me hate the game in your Final Fantasy X Part 1, there's even more thing I found frustrating. Well it was not the subject.

So, I bought Final Fantasy 13 with no expectation at all, I mean I even tough I would be badder that X, but I really find it surprising, I was into the story. Well, I won't say that it's a good game, I pretty much agree with what you said, except for the combat system, I don't like it, the only good thing is its beautiful, but it's much button smashing A on “auto-attack”, even at end-game. I didn't finish that game yet, and I don't think I will, as pretty much everyone, I thought too the game would be better at 20-25h in, but in fact it just made me quit the game, the combat with simple enemy was getting really long and the sub-quest is really, really repetitive, its pretty much artificial game lenght play time, it's useless and you lost the bit of story you had in the beginning in Pulse. Anyway, Final Fantasy 13 is better than X, but it's still far far from good and I don't think the series will ever be good since the producer of the firsts Final Final games have quited Square Enix to create MistWalker(and by the way you should try Lost Odyssey). As for a Final Fantasy 7 remake…I personally don't want one, I think it'll pretty much break the “spirit” that Final Fantasy 7 had and create an ever more enormous annoying Fan boys/girls.

I unfortunately never played any Persona games and they look really good, but they are rare now and they are hard to find and their price are pretty high, maybe something I'll have the chance of at least trying one Persona.

So I think it'll be the end of this message, just want to say thank you for your videos, really awesome(I'm even thinking of creating a series of videos about video games, as I'm doing cinema class, I'tll maybe be a good start for me, who knows :p ), and I can't wait for your second part of Final Fantasy X!

PS: I didn't really like Sherlock Holmes :p

He said he did try Lost Odyssey in his Shin Megami Tensei review video, and he found it boring.

  • Guest

I agree with you on Wrestlemania, Spoony. The matches just weren't as good as I expected them to be, especially Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker.

  • weaponboy

The biggest fundamental issue I had with the game was the insanely slow pacing. Every time I hear someone criticize the gameplay I ask them how far they got. Generally, they're around chapter 5-6, so maybe 10ish hours into the game. First of all, the combat is pretty tedious with only two players which is most of the game until Chapter 8-9. You only really get the ability to play with the combat system around Chapter 10 and that requires something like 20+ hours!

As for the weapons, yeah, the upgrade system is retarded. It gets particularly bad at the end of the game when it takes around 1.5m gil in components to finish the third tier of equipment. So obnoxious. It does create some pretty hilarious mental images as you're drumping dozens of particle accelerators and nuclear reactors into them. I imagine Lightning as swining a shitload of Large Hadron Collider around. Also, upgrading Vanille and Hope's weapons also boost their magic stats, so it's not like upgrading the weapons is useless.

Lastly, what pisses me off about the characters is I find them actually vaguely interesting…until they all resolve their differences and transform into fucking anime caricatures who want nothing but to defeat the big evil oppressor and save the world. When Hope blamed Snow for his mother's death, Snow was uncertain about whether he was actually doing the right thing, and Sazh was willing to damn himself and do anything for his son. Those were good characters. Maybe not particularly well-rounded, but they still possessed a small degree of humanity. Even Vanille had a glimmer of likeability. Then they all got over their differences and Vanille devolved into a yelping sybian-robot-riding jailbait waste of space. Sigh.

Also, just as a sidenote, the way that Vanille constantly grunts and moans is partly one of those annoying leftovers from the translation process from Japanese which has a lot more non-verbal communication and that simply doesn't translate over into English at all. It's also just a function of her as an the bubble Japanese teenager stereotype that pisses off most people in North America and Europe.

Also, Snow is pretty much universally terrible and I literally never used him. Ever. At all. All he has going for him is his HP.

  • annonymousgamer

my opinion of TNA is that it seems to be turning into a remake of WCW

  • Toreka

Sorry if someone's mentioned this before me, but… I don't understand how everyone is missing the reason behind Hope's “emo” (I hate that term so much) and whiny tendencies, if you can even call it that. But don't listen to me, I'm sure every one of you would be perfectly stable after watching your mother die at that age.

  • Yamisilaas

Dude, dont stop talking about wrestling! I enjoy the hell out of your wrestling videos. They are some of my favorites. :(

  • evansawatsky

Please don't stop making wrestling videos, they're the best. Think of the ninjas, THE NINJAS!!!

  • Sylveria

I don't think anyone doesn't “get” the reason Hope is emo. However, that sort of character is just unbearable to deal with. Whether or not he's justified in it is FAR besides the point. That personality type shouldn't be in a game in the first place.

  • Toreka

What you mean to say is that YOU find it unbearable to deal with. There are, despite popular belief, people who have varying opinions for justifiable reasons. You can have your opinion, but don't think that it's so superior among others.

And as for Hope himself, I'm seeing people complain more about him than he complains throughout the entire game. Which, if you've actually played it, isn't really that much.

  • Sylveria

I've played it, I've finished it. He complains basically until he attempts to murder Snow, who just saved his life, again, and then for a bit after that since his little revenge scheme fails. Yeah he's a good character, he's only homicidal and seeking revenge against someone who had no control over the situation in the first place. That is NOT an opinion, that's a major plot point.

It astounds me that there's actual support for this kind of characterization. He could have been a tragic character like Tellah back in FF4, but no, they took him so over the top he become obnoxious and he focused his anger on the wrong person. It is like if they made an actual plot point of Tellah searching for Meteo to kill Edward. Hope is basically the epitome of why FF13's story and characterization is bad.

I find him unbearable. I can't imagine who would actually enjoy listening to hours of pre-teen whining, but apparently I'm way out of line in that. Yeah that is my opinion. I'm allowed to have it so don't attack it and then try to claim like you're neutral. The only, ONLY, reason Hope is even around the first half of the game is because he wants to kill Snow. That's his sole motivation.

Oh, and the very point of an opinion is that you have an idea and you think that idea is right. You may understand someone else's opinion but ultimately you think yours is superior otherwise you wouldn't think it in the first place. It's incredibly hypocritical to say “You can have your opinion, but don't think that it's so superior among others,” right after you've attacked someone's.

  • Toreka

I don't see the hypocrisy in telling someone not to think that their opinion is the only one that matters. I don't mind Hope. You do (very much so). I was just stating in my original comment that he had more than enough reason to be the way he was for a good portion of the game, and that nobody seemed to recognize that. It's one thing to be whiny and annoying for no reason, but the whole reason Hope was there was to test his faith and see that he comes around when he realizes who the real enemy is. To be honest, I think if Hope were an adult character there wouldn't be all of this “emo” talk about him. Ever since that emo stereotype started, everyone's been swallowing their emotions (more than before that is) and going online to tell people how much they hate these “emo fags” that are apparently everywhere.

And an opinion doesn't mean that you have to think it's superior, you're still able to believe that other opinions are equal to your own. I don't like rap, for instance, but I can understand why someone would listen to it and enjoy it. That doesn't mean that their taste in music is worse than mine; I would be a horrible person to think so, in fact. It simply means that there's diversity, and nobody should tell you that you're wrong for the opinions you have (to a moral extent).

I wasn't attacking your opinion in any way, I was saying that people can't stop complaining about Hope's complaining. At first I thought it was some kind of joke on hypocrisy to whine about whiny characters, but I don't know what to think anymore. It's fine to not like Hope because of the kind of character he starts off as, but isn't it just hypocritical to go online and whine and scream and cuss about him? And no, I'm not referring to you personally.

  • setton

I'd love to hear what you thought of Resonance of Fate.

  • Aku

If you didn’t like how FFXIII tell the story, wait until you play Resonance of Fate… man you’re going to hate that one.

  • UC Grab

regarding persona 3. nyx is…actually overwhelmingly easy, that is, if you have satan and lucifer…armagedon is cheap and will pretty much end the game once you can cast it.

regarding persona 4. the last bosses are actually pretty hard, down to the last part. great battles

finally regarding hope. i have to say, thats the first character i can somewhat justify the way he acts. after all, he's just a brat and he just saw his mother get killed infront of him. if that had happened to me at that age, i would be pretty destroyed too. the thing is, lately its very easy to just tag anyone who gets angsty as emo, regardless wether they are emo, have real reasons to be suffering/whining or…just becose whoever tags em as emo feels they are emo

Hope was justified in ANY way he acted, but one could still find him annoying. I think what annoyed me was less that he was whiny and such, and more that he wouldn't confront Snow. His character developed a little better in the forest area when he takes to Lightning as a role model–even if it's the wrong action, he needed guidance to pursue it. The whole time he's with Snow in Palumpolum is intense.

But I do agree with you about people tagging others as emo for anything. It's stupid and has gotten out of hand. I've seen it when someone's friend died and it pissed the hell out of me.

Not sure if you've watched TNA lately, but I just saw Mr. Anderson get the crowd to cheer “We are Assholes!” Finally a wrestling cheer I can get behind!

I've just spent a weekend with some friends who owned the game and played it a little during my time there (though after being sick while suffering from heat stroke and watching a friend play the game for about ten/fifteen minutes, I my friend jokinly said “It isn't THAT bad”). Anyway, bad jokes aside it was… Alright. I had gone in expecting the worst FF since VIII but I didn't mind it. I've played for about 5 to 7 hours and just got my hands on Odin (though that fight was a pain, with my friend saying “welcome to Final Fantasy XIII”, highlighting the frustrating angles he mentioned the game often has).

I felt some of the characters were interesting and I liked the combat, especally the idea of Stagger. However if you take your eyes off it for a second you can lose about half your health and I do find it a little frustrating how the game ends if the protagonist dies and you're the only one who can use healing items and switch the Paradigms. The combat does also feel a bit easy at times when you're hammering the action button a lot but the need to switch jobes does balance it out. I agree they should have done a better job of explaining everything as I didn't want to read the data they provided me with. However I do wish there was more to the game than just the hallways. The friend I mentioned is about 30 hours in and has been running around an open field taking side quests, but this took him the best part of 30 hours to reach. He mentioned how, on many occasions, he lost the will to play the game prior to then. Plus as much as I want to like the Crystarium (I personally liked the Sphere Grid), I agre with just how linier it is. The only real “customising” element comes from whether you want to master one “job” at a time or mix and match the stats. At least with the Sphere Grid you could brance out after a while. Whether or not I'll carry on when I next see them remains to be seen, but I'm not buying my own copy. I know I'd have to re-play the seven or so hours I put into the game before I could carry on.

As for Snow's weapon of choice, personally I've always like the martial artist/Monk class. However I do put that partly due to my own interest in martial arts, due to me having trained for the best part of my life. Still though, it always makes me smile when I see someone in the party use their hands and feet over a sword or gun or the much dreaded and feared Blitzball.

I agree with you 100% with Final Fantasy 13. You basically said the things I was thinking about but couldn't figure out. The game is so BORING, which is surprising even for me because I usually have low standards for games like this. The combat is good, not awesome, just good. Story can go screw itself over. Voice acting has at least gotten better. Snow and Vanille, I could not tolerate.

I love Final Fantasy games, but this is just crap. Pure crap.

I got into this argument with my friends about Radiohead. I am not a fan at all, Radiohead bores me to tears but my friends insist that I listen to the entire album, Kid A for the curious (I’ve been told that Kid A is not a good album but it’s the one I picked up). I refused to listen to it after the first 2 songs were just nothing, FF13 sounds the same. If nothing can grab one’s attention right away then why bother?

When I first saw the trailers for FFXIII I hoped it was as epic as it looked, but I started playing and all I could think was “hmmm…. I wonder where FFIX is, I should play that again” or “Maybe I’ll start up FFVII again”.
I just thought how much fun I had in those games, and here I was running around with absolutely noooo idea what was going on in FFXIII…

I’ve heard alot of people like the fighting style… but I really hated it…. I felt useless on my own team. All I had to do was press the x button twice, it was just boring….

When Spoony said it was just like walking down hallways I suddenly realized that’s true, except when you get out, wich was the only part of FFXIII I liked in the end, but when I had to go back to the story instead of the great outdoors, it just suuuucked….

Just at the end, the characters…… They’re okay, EXCEPT hope….. I wanted to kill hope… he’s so annoying, and I wanted to get rid of the idiot, but of course I can’t because he’s my friggin healer……

Thanks for that review of FFXIII. I was actually wondering if I should pick it up and that convinced me to wait a bit on it. It’s a Final Fantasy game, so of course I’m gonna play it at some point, but now I think I should try some other games first.

Hehe, I find it ironic that now we have Wrestle!Wrestle! …*insert evil villainous laugh here*

Thanks for the review on FFXIII. I’ve been looking around the net on reviews and playthroughs of this game to see if I should get it, and this has just really cemented the idea that I shouldn’t. It looks gorgeous (and hey, I’m enough of a sucker for visual beauty that I keep watching Avatar over and over again because I can’t get enough of those cg images), but I don’t think I can bring myself to slough through what looks to be a boring, long game just for that.

In addition, ahem… SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI FUCKING RULES!!!!!!!!!

    It needed to be said.

And yes, if you don’t want to be scared forever, do not go to the 4chan image boards and search for Shelock Holmes. And definitely don’t do it at work. If the images don’t disturb your colleagues, your horrified traumatised screams might.

I loved XIII, it had the best story of all the FFs I’ve seen (or atleast on par with VI) and the combat is brilliant, but the thing is that it’s a bit too linear and you really really need those towns in between (although they did have a valid excuse for that it doesn’t mean we can just ignore it) and the post-game which has always been on of the things that make FF games better than any others was like completely cut off. There were some cool missions but the toughest boss was a dinosaur that you see as a random enemy in ch.11? Although I have to admit Gran Pulse is one of the best if not the best area I’ve ever seen in a game and I played both of the AC games. Still, a dinosaur compared to Penance’s instantly killing attacks and 12million hp or to goddamn Yiazmat is nothing. They should definitely have included the Titan in some way, even if they will do something with him in another Fabula Nova Crystallis game(can’t wait for vsXIII).

The endgame weapons were FF standard but that isn’t really the point. I missed all the dungeons and sidequests of the post-story game to a point where it just seems incomplete. XII was my favorite FF (and my favorite game of all time tied with KH2) and I think that they should have done what they did with the Marks.

Although lightning already struck twice and chances are we’ll probably not get a game as good as FFXII in 10 years, even if it is the greatest game making company of all time we’re talking about. But honestly, having said that, I loved XIII and X aswell which I know is very rare, as usually people only really like 1 or 2 of them, atleast among the gamefaqs board and this place apparently (Japanese loved all of them I think). XIII didn’t want to go for the realistic look and why should they have when they can already create much more beautiful visuals and people and reality. The game is truly breathtaking at times, and hitting 21k in Palumpolum is one of the most awesome things anyone who played the game will ever do in their life.

the single worst thing about this game is the damn fighting system! i can get over linearity and bullshit level-up-systems.

WHY THE FUCK DO I GET A GAME OVER IF THE CHARACTER I’M USING DIES?!

I can revive the other guys but they can’t revive me?! WTF?! I know that reviving people doesn’t make sense but damn… if you can revive the other characters, it HAS TO BE possible to revive the character I’m controlling!!! continuity please??? please?!?

Oh, and why can I only really control one character at a time? I takes the whole fun out of it :(

FF13 sucks. The story is stupid/boring/nonsensical, the fighting system is the worst one of any FF, the leveling system doesn’t make sense (like spoony pointed out), it’s linear as hell and the characters (except the black dude) are awesomely annoying… I wish I hadn’t bought this game -.-

The only good thing about this game are the graphics.

I’ll stop writing now and go play the last really, really good Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy IX.

I’d agree with you about RPG’s being linear…
…if JRPG’s (like Final Fantasy) were Role Playing Games. There is no Role Playing in these games. You control someone else’s character, you have no control over the plot or character development, no say in how things change, any “choices” you make simply tie into the pre-established personality of the character you are controlling (essentially meaning you have no real impact on that character’s growth), in fact you have no real choice over much of anything beyond equipment and combat. I know most games are like that, but Role Playing Games aren’t. The Ultima series are RPG’s. Mass Effect 1 and 2 are RPG’s. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (and Redemption) is a RPG. KoTOR is a RPG. The Elder Scrolls games are RPG’s. Hell, the Wizardry games (at least the later ones) are RPG’s. Those games are all very much open world in design. JRPG’s (from my experience) are not only more linear, but also offer up pretty much no (or next to none) Role Playing.

FFXIII is decent at best. I get that characters being likable is debatable, and the same is mostly true for plot and objectives – everything can be good under the right circumstances. However, I agree with Spoony that this game is too concrete and vague. Although I didn’t notice that EVERY level is, more or less, a hall, I did notice you have zero choice in character leveling. Other than what class you choose for them, you get nothing else. It’s one big circle that goes up level after level, occasionally giving you an extra bit on the side to get on the way.

I’m at what I can assume is the half way point, and I still don’t know what the fuck is going on. Very little was explained, and what actually was explained opened up even more questions and concerns about the plot. It’s not even that it’s a mystery, because my favorite series’ of all time is one big mystery, where the characters are constantly trying to find out what’s going on, and why, but FFXIII does this terribly. Even basic things, like mentioned in this video, aren’t explained. Who are these people? What’s the back story, and current story of the world they live in? Very little is given to you, and I refuse to read walls of texts just to know basic details of a video game plot. That’s ridiculous.

I also liked FFXII better, which I was surprised to find out is practically hated by most FF fans when I got to the end of the game. Other than FFI-FFV or so, it’s the only game in the series I genuinely like outside of a few specific details (ex: I like Auron in FFX, but think the plot is boring and/or stupid).

I have played several hours of Final Fantasy XIII, and you are dead on on just about everything you said about it. I hate every character except for Sazh, pretty much. Lightning barely has a personality. The only thing she has done that I like is punch Snow. Speaking of Snow, the guy is a FUCKING RETARD! Hope is whiney. Vanille is annoying.

The story telling pissed me off. Not only is it full of stupid plot points (You gain immortality by being turned into a crystal? CRYSTALS ARE ROCK FORMATIONS! THEY ARE NOT ALIVE, YOU STUPID, STUPID GAME!) but it never explains anything. It leave it up to the data log. Unlike fucking Mass Effect, it isn’t voice acted. Also, unlike Mass Effect, it explains things that are important to the story. In Mass Effect, it expanded the universe you already were in. All of the most important things WERE EXPLAINED IN GAME! Ugh. Stupid fucking video game. Incredibly stupid fucking video game.

I really liked XII. I hoped they would keep the things I liked about XII. They got rid of EVERY SINGLE THING that I liked about that game. Every. Single. One.

Honestly, I think FFVII is overrated. I always have .I always will. I never thought it was that good. I love I, II, IV, V, VI, IX and XII. Tactics is great, too.

There hasn’t been a perfect FF game since FFVII. FFVII became a HUGE success and it seems to me that Square got the “Metallica syndrome” and thought that they could do more wierd and outrageous stuff with their game now that they made one of the best selling games of all time. IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY! PEOPLE WON’T BUY YOUR SHIT JUST BECAUSE YOU MADE ONE INSANELY GREAT PRODUCT! Metallica sold 10 million albums with “Black Album” and now they barely sell 1 million. See what I’m talking about? Money and success blinds people.

I wish I had paid attention here before buying this game second hand a few days ago.

I thought it wasn’t so bad that it wasn’t worth the cost of 2 pizza’s.

Can I trade it for 2 pizza’s? :( I would enjoy them more.  I can’t even control the dang characters in this game.  Every stupid concept in it from the world design to the levelling system is so.. stupidly metagamish.  Nothing makes in character sense.  Whats with the stupid levelling? Do they carry around crystals in their pocket and.. I dunno.. tell them what attribute they want t focus on? Materia made sense.. levelling made sense since you’re getting more experienced at fighting.. this metagame linear sphere grid crap needs to die.

I can’t go where I want.  It -is- nothing but long corridors.  All the characters are frigging annoying except the black guy.. whose concept is ruined by the stupid bird in his hair that makes no sense.  The only good things about this game are a couple of characters visual design and the music.

Also, that the heck is S-E’s obsession with calling their charcaters stupid and esoteric weather based names?  Do they really think we liked 7 because of the name Cloud?  There has been no decent final fantasy past 9.  And I agree with you on 8.

If you ask me, they should have STARTED FFXIII sometime DURING the 13 days so you could get a better background of the characters (WITHOUT having to go to the novels) and even get more familiar with Cocoon so you’d care a little more about what happened to it…

Personally, I don’t care that the game is so dang linear, but the gameplay is really repetitive… walk, battle, walk, battle, walk, battle. THAT gets boring.. switch it up a little. Could have done something like making the airship battles playable, or making that race (when the gang enters Eden for the first time) playable. The interaction doesn’t even increase once you reach Gran Pulse.

…I wish I knew how to feel about Snow… I want to go back to loving him the way I used to. I’m hoping that the sequel will help me do so. But for now, I’m really conflicted….

FFXII was indeed alright. At least you could EXPLORE! The story was ass, and the pirate and princess should have been the main characters, but…it was at least fun to play at times. Hunting the monsters was fun.

FFX was a HALLWAY! FFXIII was a HALLWAY! And I HATED HATED HATED it. FFX is the worst game I have ever wasted that much time on.

FFVI and VII were awesome. And Spoony needs to give IX another chance, because it actually is pretty fun.

Final Fantasy XII was decent, except for one major flaw: it is next to impossible to get all of the best equipment and to hunt all of the monsters.  (Just try to encounter the big-ass red chocobo, much less defeat it when you do.)  When you’re given odds of 1/356 (or something close to that) for a horse demon monster dropping the best armor (and if I remember correctly you had to do something time consuming just to get the damn horse demon to appear) it is endlessly frustrating.  Plus Vaan is basically the reincarnation of Tidus.  I couldn’t believe I had to play another blonde prepubescent androgynous pussy wearing some ridiculous outfit with his chest showing as the lead character.  Balthier and Fran were two of the best characters the franchise has come up with in a long time, and yet they were treated as marginal characters.  (They’re barely even in the game’s finale.)  If the game got rid of Vaan and revolved around Balthier and Fran, and made it at least possible to get the best items and equipment in a reasonable amount of time, then it would have probably been one of the best games in the series.

Is it just me or do the makers of Final Fantasy seriously need to stop naming characters after weather patterns?  First it was Cloud, then Squall, now it’s Lightning (and apparently another secondary character named Snow, for goodness sake.)  What’s next, Typhoon?  Tsunami?  Hail?  I didn’t mind Cloud, I guess because it was the first time they tried it, but come on it’s really getting old.  Naming the lead character something like Lightning won’t recapture the magic (nor the sales) of FFVII.

I haven’t played 13 and have no intention of doing so.  From what I’ve heard, they’ve taken out every single good thing that made me love playing Final Fantasy games since I was a kid, of course with the exception of FFX.  (Thank you Spoony for ripping that game to shreds.  It really does make FFVIII look good.  And that says a lot.)

and yes the story of ffxiii was a tad confusing at times but ffvii confused the crap out of me too, infact probably more so.

  • Justin Brechbill

Here are my thoughts with *my* experience with FFXIII:
When I found a copy of FFXIII at Gamestop for $25, I was excited. It was the first FF of the CG I’ve played. I really wanted to like the game. Sadly, I could not. It was alright  at first, but by Chapter 7 I hated it. I thought the characters were fine for the most part. Lightning is nothing special but Ilike Snow, Sazh, and Vanille. Most of the others I saw I felt neutral towards, with the exception of Hope. This was the most annoyingly whiny and pointless character I’ve ever seen in a FF game. I’d explain why but you know, spoilers. The story never grasped me. So little was ever explained and to gain any real grasp on it you had to read several pages of small font text at several points throughout each chapter. This is absolutely ridiculous in this day and age. I read them anyway but it still barely helped. So I never got into nor did I care much what was going on. Other than that the story was fine, I suppose.
I hear a lot of people like FFXIII’s combat/upgrade system and try as hard I may, I cannot understand why. I absolutely hated it. I found that you had zero control over a character’s development outside of choosing their class. FFX’ Sphere Grid, while confusing and odd (though I did overall enjoy FFX), was much better than the Crystarium system.  It was a circle going in a straight line with occasional upgrades to grab on the side, but otherwise you had no choice here.
As for the combat system, I did alright with it at first but it became increasing boring and repetitive as I went along. All I ever did was hit Auto-battle, switch paradigms, heal, use and item, rinse and repeat. The turn-based style I’ve come to know and love aren’t present in this game. I hated there was no way to stop and be allowed to plan your actions during battle without being penalized by the ATB guage. The gauge never stops, allowing you no time to think. That may be fine for some people, but I hate it. It prevents me from coming up with any type of strategy against anything. The other thing I hated about the combat was how ridiculously overpowered enemies/bosses were and the inability to grind. I’ve that you can grind after Chapter 10 but I was never able to get past chapter 7. Only a few chapters into the game, enemies would start having exceptionally high defense and HP, forcing you to make use use of a staggering system in order to stun enemies/bosses and deal damage more efficiently. My problem with it was not the staggering itself, but the ridiculous defense and HP of these beasts and how weak your party is through a large portion of the game. 7 chapters and 16 hours into the game, none of my party members ever exceeded 900 HP or 200 damage per turn. At the end of chapter 7, I got stuck on a boss with 120,000 HP and a max attack power of about 700. Its the most ridiculously overpowered boss I’ve ever fought. My only party members, Snow and Hope, having less than 900 HP each and being able to inflict less than 300 damage per turn even after staggering the thing, got me killed many times. Sadly, this where I had to  I gave up and sold the game since I had no way to grind or beat it, so I can’t really speak for the rest of the game.
    And that was my experience.
