oh spoony you do know how to tease us with you're upcoming videos XD

  • Eniliad

Thanks for the commentary Spoony; great story with the Press Pass and getting to review the movie early. I can't imagine a critic walking out of a movie, let alone a slew of them. But hey, maybe they left to avoid potential brain damage. I didn't notice that Terl Spoony was wearing the Gray Pocket Tee, but now I can't unsee it either. Great stuff, good luck with finding good gimmicks and props for your stuff. :)

Is warrior spoony going to be with linkara? :0 !!! ( again !? )
    I LOVE warrior-spoony xD
You're awesome, man, keep up the good work.
PS: I was hoping you would review shutter island :( (vlog style)

SLC Punk was a really good movie, surprising consider how Matthew Lilliard has done NOTHING good since. He was a least funny in Scream 1, but your mileage will vary on that.

  • Ustramage

I own the Kilrathi Saga and it plays on Windows XP with no major problems. Yes GET IT! Very fun, very awsome games!

I remember reading your reviews in Knights of the Dinner Table, they were funny!

  • http://www.facebook.com/manuel.baudisch Manuel Baudisch

I think you might be wrong at one point: Freddie Prinze Jr. was the one who stared in “24″, not Matty Lillard.

  • devilfish

Wow, I didn't even get that “spell your name” joke until I had the commentary point it out to me. I'm such an idiot.

  • Claim

It's alway great when you give us commentaries spoony, thanks !

  • rudy023

What's the worst video game movie? Isn't that like asking who the stupidest kid is in the remedial class? Other than the first Mortal Kombat movie, I can't think of a good video game movie!

  • Aersmith

    I need my Spoony fix.

  • DemiPatt

Got 2 Say that you are really good at playing Terl & using his accent appropriately. I also cant wait to see him again in maybe a Lets Play of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger? Plz?

  • Vedge

“Will Final Fantasy X be among them? Agh, the suspense!” Spoony, you devil ! You know we are ALL waiting for that one ! ;)

  • Bosconian

'It's a trap!' – would've been a great line, cliched as it is. Excellent review with lots of laughs. Looking forward the next.

  • peteman

If you want to have different opening sequences, provide an mp3 of the opening.

  • thechino

    This was interesting, thank you.

How I loved Wing Commander when I was a kid. I remember the first time I played with a sound blaster, good times, good times. I only played the first two, Armada, and Privateer I never tried 3 or 4, and I didn't even know there was a 5.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ObieWanCoyote Christopher Lash

Ah the memories… I just played through the Win9x edition of WC4, worked flawlessly on WinXP Pro 32-bit. Dunno about Vista, and I don't have Win7 installed at the moment. Being that I have x64 editions of both, I doubt it for me at least.

WC4 came in a DVD set that supposedly wasn't interlaced. That's where the high quality copies of the cutscenes are available from the Wing Commander CIC site (http://www.wcnews.com). They also have some awesome freebie games. Standoff is a nifty WC5 based fan project. The cutscenes look a bit ridiculous and the hud looks a little cartoony but, that was WC5.

I was thinking about posting a let's play, as Spoony's probably too busy for such a project. However, making a space combat sim entertaining for an audience, not so easy… to much of the repetitive nature.

You can get the DVD version of WC4 running by downloading DXMCi from:
    http://www.si-gamer.net/gulikoza/

My WCIV DVD came with a Creative Labs DXR2 and the game is coded to insert FMVs using MCI command which windows dropped a long time ago. This patch converts those to commands a current machine can understand.

I believe Kilrathi saga is the best option for playing on windows. All the games are remade to work in windows and to work with Directx/direct input with no work. At least I remember playing it until XP. Haven't tried KS under win7 yet.

The nice change is that it adds throttle and rudder support to WC3 IIRC. The issue that bothers people is that it doesn't use MIDI for music and the music it does use can sound worse than what your old DOS computer sounded like, or what your current computer could do with a good sound font.

Thankfully though, there's always DOSBOX. BTW, the DXMCI site has the build of DOSBox that I use. It has a few options not included in the CVS including MUNT (MT32 emulation) which was great for me since my P166 machine with the LAPC-1 died about the time this was added as an option.

Wing Commander 2 was one of my first CD-ROM games. I got a kit that came with WC2 Deluxe and Return to Zork. I remember how much fun I had playing WC2 for the first time and hearing the voices of everyone. Then I saw on Computer Chronicles that they were working on a third one but with good actors and I knew I had to pick that up.

Ummm… When you say you want a remix of the theme song, do you also include covers? My band is looking for little projects here and there…

  • TomeOne

FPJ is actually a decent actor in this last season of 24. I don't cringe when he comes on screen and he's no longer some heartthrob.

Spoony you dont want to play X3 theres a lot of kh'ah in there you will be literally swarmed by kh'ak and this game will leave you underwhelmed and unimpressed by the Caw'ck

hey dude dont know if you’ll read this but im currently working on a dancey/synthed version of break me it should be done by the weekend if your intrested just let me know but anyway love the show man keep up the good work

  • landofunk

I played both WC3 and 4 at a friends house back when they were released (my friend even had some special edition of WC3 that came in an actual movie reel canister) so when WC Prophecy came out I picked it up. It was all right, but without Hamill as the protagonist it did kind of suffer in quality compared to the others. I probably just liked the Lucasarts flight sims more at the time.

  • vincentvendetta

I think you can buy Wing Commander IV as a PSone Classics on the PSN. I should propably get it.

  • ivdar

    “Oh bite me, it's fun.”
For some reason, that cracks me up every time xD.

  • True_Avery

Spoony, could you please splice Yuna back into your opening? That reaction shot with Yuna is pretty much what I associate you with at all times whether you like it or not! It is about as iconic as your logo at this point.

  • qwrtyp

Aww, Spoony's gay for Jürgen Prochnow.
    I always enjoy your commentaries.

  • Salenstormwing

I'm with you on this Spoony. Worst video game movie ever, I'm not sure, but probably the one movie I hate more than anything else. I wanted to walk out on this movie, but damn, I really should have. At least then I wouldn't have sat through this damn movie.

This movie ruined my favorite game series, and every copy of this movie deserves to burn in a fire. Also, I hope we see more Terl! Keep up the good work, Spoony!

Nothing to do with the video but i have a question
in the random sentence thing you have at the top of the site i seen this line “i’m just a cook!”
is this a tribute for the series Nadesico?
the main character Akito keep yelling “i’m a cook!” whenever he doesn’t want to confront something

  • KevinSutton

Wow, I kinda wish you'd used that line of your brother's.

  • notyoursavior78

Cool man. I love your commentaries. I also liked the commentaries of your old episodes too. I was bored and pretty much went through the entirety of your news one day all the way back to some of your oldest stuff where you posted that you had done commentaries for your original nes episodes and they were very entertaining. I believe you had planned to include them with your Spoony Experiment dvd that never did come out.

Anyway keep it up man! I liked your new introduction, I just didn't really need to see Zelda from GameCrazy. She was unbearable haha but at least she may be out of a job now since all GameCrazys are closing.

  • SethTheXenocide

Spoony, your Terl is amazing. Keep it like it is.

  • http://spoonyexperiment.com The Spoony One

Sounds like fun! I'd love to hear remixes and covers of “Break Me.”

  • lamg

Holy shit! This movie had friggin HERCULE POIROT in it!

  • dwu0601

This movie had potential. Too bad every time someone takes a video game to make a movie, they seem to ignore that another writer already sat down and wrote a story that has everything that you need for a movie. I mean what was 8+ hours of game play can be compressed into 1.5-2 hour movie. And yet we get trash like this that seems to take the story and toss it into a fire.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=663389584 Andrew St. Andrew

I used to see every release the night before they came out as well. I loved working at a movie theatre and kinda miss it, minus the crappy pay.

  • koztah

Spoony, Dude. Instead of finding the PC versions of WC3 and 4 and trying to get them to run under modern Windows, it's easier to pick up the PS1 versions of the games (with scanline-less FMV) and play them on a PS1/2/3 or on a PC with an emulator (still easier than fucking with DosBox trying to get it to work properly and play the FMV properly).

  • Strelnikov

Nobody's said it but the human space fighters look like beer kegs with wings.

What hurts is they had ALOT of pseudo-wannabe Star Wars/Star Trek/1980's “space opera” anime designs for the heroes' starfighters and they came up with a winged beercan with jet engines hanging off at odd angles and a nose full of Gatling guns, so it also looks like a Norelco shaver. And yes, it has JET engines for use in SPACE. Let that sink in.

Spoony, thanks for mentioning the Guild Navigator thing….they not only ripped off “Das Boot” (and every WWII sub movie ever made) with that keeping quiet stuff, the fact that Prochnow's ship is in an asteroid crater while the Kilrathi bomb it was stolen right out of “The Empire Strikes Back!”

  • ogmaster

I didnt see this on the other video comments or here, so I dont think anyone has brought it up, but did anyone feel like this had a sort of weird attempt for this generation's Star Wars? Here's what I mean. You have two white guys, with no accents(or you can say just American accents) with all these people with a variety of accents, who join this whole crew seemingly out of nowhere. Not only that, but you have Blair who's this somewhat calm, young, naive, yet very special person who didnt really know about his background or parent's that much until he was told by an older, wiser soldier. Then you have Maniac who is loud, obnoxious, womanizer, crazy, but a hell of a pilot that you want on your side all the time.

I really hope I'm not the only one that thought of this. For me, once I heard that everyone except for the two male leads had an accent, it immediately reminded me of Star Wars.

  • Booze Zombie

I found a song you could use if you want to mix up the music whilst keeping it similar:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKCwSvNy0_o

  • Searry

Freddie Prinze jr. Sucks in 24 too. He has the same stupid look, and does not act like a secret agent. He sucks.

  • DJGamer

I actually have like a FREAKIN' GUIDE BOOK for this movie!!! Like it has something like all the details about the Confederacy or something. I could probably scan it and like post it or something although it would probably be a better idea to just package it and send it to Spoony and have look through it and rant about it. lol

I also happen to own the novelization of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within for some reason. I just recently discovered it on my book shelf and I was like why the hell do I own that?!

  • DJGamer

Actually, now that I read some of the reviews for these books they actually seem to be GOOD-even the novelization of the original movie. It still might be worth having Spoony check them out only to riff further on how much BETTER the movie itself could've been.

  • Sven

Ok, if you want to play Wing Commander, here’s the lowdown.

Kilrathi Saga will have issues on anything newer than XP. It might work on XP, it might not, but if you have Vista or 7 you can almost forget it. Also, Kilrathi Saga was a limited edition in the true sense of the word, getting a copy can be hard and very expensive (I’ve seen it go on eBay for $500+).

Wing Command 2 in Kilrathi Saga also has speed issues in the cutscenes. The gameplay is fine, but the cutscenes will run too fast.

Playing the original WC1 and WC2 under DOSBox is easy. Both work fine although WC2 might crash in the second mission; if it does Google for a workaround because there is one. It’s honestly easier to get this to work than to try to get Kilrathi Saga to work. The only drawback is that you’ll miss out on the nice digitized sound of the Kilrathi Saga version. On the other hand, you’ll also miss out on several bugs that Kilrathi Saga introduced.

I think both WC3 and 4 have an option to turn the black lines off. It’ll just be blocky instead if you do that. There is also a DVD version of WC4; it requires the Creative DXR2 DVD decoder, but I believe there’s a fan-made patch to remove that requirement. The video quality of this version is obviously much better than the CD version.

Also, I recommend getting a joystick with a lot of programmable buttons so you can set up some of them for afterburner, decoys, etc. so you don’t have to use the keyboard for that all the time.

  • MisterBibs

    Spoony:

Your comments on Prophecy were accurate, in terms of it being an intended reboot of the series with a new alien race, new hotshot pilot, new flashy hotshot pilot friend, etc.. While I don’t remember the sales figures or anything, people really didn’t take to it. The new hotshots were 20-something actors who didn’t do much before or after doing Prophecy, the older characters were generally given limited screen-time and *acted* old and worn out. The final nail in the coffin was the FMV Game’s demise itself.

  • darklord42

Kilrathi Saga has issues running on modern systems especially the WC3 version. There is a fan made patch to get it working again and that is available at the http://www.wcnews.com forums. But I went to the dos versions of the games a long time ago before it came out. You seem to imply that WCKS will run on dosbox which isn’t true. Kilrathi Saga was a remade version of the games made specifically for Windows 95.
Dosbox runs the old dos games very well, although wc1 and wc2 have issues with timing with the latest stable version of dosbox 0.73. Music didn’t always sync up with the visuals, animations were to fast or slow, and the game would suffer terrible slowdowns when you close to the enemy or a lot appeared on the screen. The solution was of course to change the cycles on the fly but it still made the harder missions even harder. Thankfully in the cvs version and the next stable release, of dosbox, they fixed this so now both games run beautifully.

I agree, Maniac looks almost like some rabid Jack Russel terrier with his head flailing around screaming for a medic- I was trying not to laugh out loud when I watched the review since I was in an internet cafe.

  • http://twitter.com/torbenfrost Troels Pleimert

I got in touch with The Irresponsibles about perhaps remixing “Break Me.” Turns out, you can't – 'cos the original audio files of the song are lost. I would have loved to do an industrial/punk-remix of the song, but … them's the breaks.

  • http://thenewyawker.darkbb.com/ Tylarannosaurus Rex

SLC Punk = Matt Lillards greatest work = It was… okay.

  • SciroccoTaiSA

Now, let me start off by saying that I completely agree with the general consensus on this movie. I hate this movie. This movie is responsible for burying the entire Wing Commander franchise. The thing that really makes me sad about this whole thing is that I can actually understand where this abomination CAME from. This is what really kills me, like someone took one of those worthless little pilgrim cross things and drove it into my heart with a sledgehammer. THIS is what Chris Roberts originally wanted for the series. THIS IS CHRIS ROBERTS' WING COMMANDER!

Now, throughout the entire Wing Commander series, from 1-3, they never really made any secret that this was a Sci-Fi version of the Pacific Theatre of World War 2.

The Kilrathi are the obvious Imperial Japanese analog, with how they have that code of honor they live by and fight by. The battle tactics are similar to what they were in the Pacific, with torpedo bombers being the main offensive weapon against capital ships, and guns being the main anti-fighter weapon both in dogfights and in capital ship defense turrets, as opposed to guided missiles.

In Wing Commander 3, the two main fighters are even called the Hellcat and the Thunderbolt, which were respectively the US Navy's main carrier based fighter, and the US Army's main land-based fighter in the Pacific. But it was still subtle enough, and was put in the context of a very compelling sci-fi environment. The ships looked great, the costumes were great, everything was this very appealing blend of contemporary and futuristic design.

Now you see this movie, written and directed by Chris Roberts, and every single thing about this movie just takes the World War 2 angle and beats you over the head with it. The fighters look like World War 2 fighters, right down to the rivets, the size of the aircraft, and the gatling guns in the front look like a radial engine housing like on WW2 fighters. The costumes look like futurized versions of WW2 navy uniforms too, with the dopey hat and everything. There's the infamous WW2 submarine hunt scene, god help us.

It's like Chris Roberts is telling us 'Hey, I know I created this really awesome video game series that a lot of you grew up loving, and describing as the best space sim series of all time, but you see, the only reason it was like that was we didn't have the technology or budget to make everything look like WW2-retro stuff, and if I had your beloved video game franchise would have looked like this steaming pile of donkey manure right from the get-go.'

    God I need a drink.

  • Peter Leggieri

This commentary made me think about the Matrix-stye effect they used when going into hyperspace. Looking back, this movie came out (slightly) before the Matrix – and in fact the same effect was used a year before in Lost in Space. So while tons of movies after The Matrix aped the styles used therein, this movie has more of a dubious honor of ripping off Joey Tribbiani's Great Space Ape Adventures (talk about going from suck to blow).

  • godofplague

I think they showed a kilrathi priestess in on the firekan saga. I believe they did have three rows of breasts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Schroeder/632045130 Chris Schroeder

While this movie reeks on most counts, I'd like to take time to point out two very excellent parts of the movie that aren't Tcheky Karyo. The score of this movie remained far more memorable than any performance and still makes me think of a movie that could have been quite epic. Just like Starship Troopers, the music really deserved to support a better movie.

Second, the opening was freakin' beautiful. Say what you will about the rest of the movie, but the solemn music accompanied by JFK's space speech leading in to the thunderous brass theme while showing the star charts flowing from Earth outward? The intro screams brilliance. The voiceover of news broadcasts subtly informs you everything you really need to know about the universe fast in a way that still builds and contributes to the overall background of the universe. It's not completely original or unique (The Watchmen intro montage took its time in comparison), but this route works far better in fictional universes than the ever-brutal text exposition. The subtle shift of “news highlights” instead of straight up scroll proves the tried and true rule that showing the audience is far better than explaining it to them as if it were just fact.

  • Lustigerpete

guess this movie should have been called Dune meets Das Boot meets the worst SciFi cast ever…
