Check out this full, uncut session of BSG: The Boardgame! Fair warning, though: this isn’t an actual review or anything, it’s just a slice of life of my Friday gaming group.

Cast of Characters:

Noah: Ellen Tigh
Eric: Saul Tigh
Michelle: Boomer
Rob: Helo
Jeff: Chief Tyrol

Not very far in, but this game has way too many decks of cards.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ObieWanCoyote Christopher Lash

Oh yes, this is worse than my first attempt at Magic The Gathering with a 2-300 card deck =p.

Woot, Spoony's got a Nella like co-star on this one =p.

  • jewbagel

Finished the first video (saw it up on blip earlier). It took a little bit to get into it with all the rule explaining (though that was necessary). Fantastic game, seems like a great group you play with too. It was awesome when you guys starting suspecting one another. Also thanks for the cylon card choosing spoiler warning, it makes things pretty funny to not actually know what you are.

Some feedback on the setup and such if you were looking for any:

Explaining: I think maybe (if you decide to do another video like this) making a seperate intro video explaining the boards, cards and rules in a more controlled area might work, if only to trim down the total video time. It wasn't hard to follow along and get the rules in this one but the game didn't start until the 30 minute mark or so. Reading the cards aloud and explaining periodically what the situation was worked nicely.

Video: Wideshot worked really well, I think it's better if you just leave it static, moving it around is a bit confusing. But wideshot definitely works, so don't worry about it not being interesting enough if the camera is just stationary like that.

Audio: You could hear everyone most of the time, especially as the game went on. But sometimes the other game in the background overpowered you guys (in the first hour or so), if there's anyway to isolate the main game a bit more it would be perfect.

  • goodguya

Unfortunately, I won't be able to finish until tomorrow (when I shall put my full thoughts), but damn I wish I played more board games. I feel like it would up anyone's IQ by like 9 points

  • PatMan33

Man, I love the videos like this. The pure stream of consciousness stuff when you kind of just forget the camera is there. Fantastic!

  • The_Stig

I'm sorry, Spoony but to really get into the role of Ellen Tigh you're gonna need vodka and Eric's going to need an exaggerated Canadian accent to play Saul. Irony: YOU'RE ALL CYLONS! Actually, four of those characters are Cylons and the fifth was fracking one. But actually, the Skinjobs are only one kind of Cylon. There's also the Centurions, the Cylon Raiders and the Hybrids which run the base ships, sit in bathtubs all day, say “end of line” a lot and occasionally spout wisdom and prophecy like some kind of half Oracle of Delphi, half Belt Sander.

    I just thought I'd nitpick.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ObieWanCoyote Christopher Lash

Hehe… when I read your response, I thought you threw in “End of line” like they do on the show, as in end of your statement. For some reason that really tickled me. And then I realized you just meant they say that a lot… Probably would have thrown Spoony into a bit of a tiff about his fans liking BSG.

I may have to swipe that line now that you’ve made me think of it. And should I ever stop nit-picking my clips and release them to the inter-webs we can all blame you for it. Even though it was my fuzzy logic that kinda imposed the idea on your response. Sorry for the tangent, Who am i? Where am I, and Who are you? *scratches head*

      I think I need a nap…

    Awesome vid man!

  • TimADugan

Damn it Spoony; I'm just about to go to bed and I see you post this massively long video of what looks to be awesomeness and now I'm torn between whether I actually needed to sleep tonight or not.

  • excalibur01

I'm going to need to set aside some time for this one. Damn. Didn't know you could upload that much

  • http://twitter.com/jasonli1337 Jason Zhen Li

Spoony, you could do stuff like reality tv for these videos, even if it would be cheesy. By reality tv, I mean have little asides with the players to describe their thought processes on the game and why they did certain things. That might make it a big headache but I think it could be interesting to see beyond just the static camera.

  • Eniliad

Holy shit! Now THAT is what I call a board game. O_o

  • paranoialookout

Will watch tomorrow. I think I can do without at 3am, but that means I have something to look forward to at least.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lou.nolastnamegiven Lou Nolastnamegiven

Jeff reminds me of my pastor: the beard and the friendly demeanor, really does seem like him. You seem to have a fun group, Spoony!

So it's a lot like Risk then? ;D

Wow! this was really entertaining and interesting. Where exactly is this session anyway?
Is it in some persons house? a comic place? The YMCA?… Who set these up? haha, seriously, this is pretty cool, I wish I knew about something like this nearby.
Been loving the DnD sessions too by the by. I'm learning new and nerdier things every day.

  • http://twitter.com/DemiPatt Patt Cicada

I see this played at my Local D&D group a few times. I never new it was this game though just noticed that it took up 2 tables to play. Still I like to see you play that Buffy game LoL.

  • TitanCreed

“You're so hot and greasy, Noah!”

  • godzillaexpert

    YAY! MORE SPOONY!

  • Buttink

Get a top down camera! Plus, idk if the video camera is doing it or the encoding (if any) but man its low quality.

Back to the game, this is strangely entertaining to watch. I dont know why, and it scares me.

  • godzillaexpert

    Don't say that!

  • TitanCreed

If you are ever interested in doing more boardgames, you might want to invest in a jib. I know some guys who work heaviliy with used camera equipment if you ever want me to inquire about finding you a cheap one.

  • tjspeirs

    kehehehe

  • tjspeirs

I think the quality loss may be from the lighting. Doesn't look too full.

It is entertaining. If it didn't take 3 hours to complete, I wouldn't mind playing it. Mebbe I'll look at other board games…

  • El-Macheto

great videos. I woud love to try this game, but i dont own this game, and I have nobody else to play with me…. I am a lonley man

  • dennett316

That was looooooong, but strangely compelling. I really like the idea behind this game, and that anyone can become a cylon just adds to the interest. I don't think I'd be very good at it, I'm terrible at concealing my intentions and I think I'd be BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA-ing within seconds of getting the cylon card.
I wouldn't object to more of these – perhaps a mini-tripod to sit directly on the table and move about to points of interest. I'd like to see the Buffy game, and perhaps even something a little more basic like Hero Quest – particularly if you've designed your own quest….that'd be great.

  • Cthulhu07

You've gotta a nice group of boardgamers there, man. Would love to see you play something else with them laterz. Something like mmmm Arkham Horror or Last Night on Earth. Hell, even a game of Zombies!!! would be great. Anyways, thanks for sharing this game session with us.

  • http://www.facebook.com/fadedLotuz Bruno Enrique Mora Alfaro

Awesome game, I had to watch the whole thing, I couldn't stop once I hit the play button. Now I need to get some board games here in México

  • http://twitter.com/phate_phoenix Sam

It is now 4:30am here, and, having finished the whole thing, I have to say it was very interesting, and looked like a lot of fun. And it's not just the sleep deprivation talking. I'm glad you didn't edit it down, to be honest. It was really interesting to watch each of the players and try to figure out which were Cylons.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rvd42387 Brad Belanger

I Cannot believe I just spent 3 and a half hours watching spoony play a board game at the same time it was entertaining to watch for a good while. I was playing my own guessing game with who was a scilon until Michelle revealed herself. so yea it was long but it was fun to watch.

  • http://twitter.com/jankahl87 Jani Ojala

GOD DAMNIT SPOONY! At the beginning of the second part when you showed the card you said “See it?”. When I heard it the first time it sounded like a random grunt indicating that I could open my eyes. But it wasn't! I saw the truth! The suspense was ruined! FUCK! Let this be a warning to anyone who reads this in advance: WAIT FOR THE SECOND GRUNT!!!

Anyway, this was an exhausting experience in terms of length (had to pop out a few times for a smoke) but a lot of fun to watch nevertheless. And hey, I did request this un-cut version! Can't wait to see if you decide to make a shortened commentary edition of this. Oh, and fans, if you're reading this before watching the video and you're familiar with the game, I recommend skipping the first 30 minutes since nothing really happens when they go over the rules, but that's up to you.

And Spoony, keep up the good work!

  • Booloo

I wish Spoony had been a cyclone so when he checked the loyalty card he could of pulled a bluff and accused him of being a cylone to get him airlocked

  • jetman123

You know you have a good board game session when your viewers are willing to watch three hours of nothing but you playing a board game, and are entertained by it. :D

  • FaustSnake

Jeff sounds like Crow from MST3K :B

  • neochivalry

This was a massive video and I actually prefer the uncut “playthrough.” I've been on the fence about buying BSG or not; but my main issue was I was unsure how it “played out” and I didn't want to spend over 50$CDN to find out. Watching a full playthough, bitching and all, let me see how the game flow worked…player interaction….varied opinion on the game…etc. Plus Noah is an awesome guy to just watch be himself. In the end I was convinced to buy this game, despite not even being a fan of the show, and, based on what I saw, I think my group of players would love to play this sorta of “backstabbery” kinda game. Thanks a bunch!

    Game Commentary:
After Noah practically revealled himself as traitor before New Caprica I was shocked he wasn't executed to prevent him doing the “nasti-gram” or being a treacherous human. A Lot of the Human-side loss happened by not controlling the traitor amoung them.

As for the expansion, I chalk up the late-game fatalism with the fact they were so up against the wall and they made no move to eliminate the traitor while they had the chance. Humans were in the lead until Noah made the blunder of “revealing” but not revealing….and humans didn't take it up. (It WAS late at night I imagine so fatigue had prolly in after a a while)

    ANYWAY

Great unedited “Let's Play” of a boardgame. Thanks Noah! (And props to the guys who were willing to be taped.)

  • robek

that was cool! I think you should make a contest and the winner will play with you over skype ^_^

  • Thumper17

That was grueling. But still good fun. It would have been a good idea to do an explanation before hand so we could hear better and clearer.

Also, is their anyway I could be unbanned from the main site? I was having a horrible day when I got banned like, almost a year ago. If you could even put me on some trial or something. Any way possible. I'd love to get back to the main site. I normally wouldn't beg like this, but this site is like a home away from home and it was my birthday Friday. So you could think of it as a late gift.

Could we at least talk? Shoot me an email.

The account was Thumper17 and the email was TannerDVader@hotmail.

This was strangely compelling. If someone would have told me last week that I was going to watch a 3 and a half hour video of a group of people playing a board game, I would have socked them in the face. But I really enjoyed it.

Man that was long, but I enjoyed it ALOT made me want to play the BSG board game just a pity the gaming groups round where I live are experts only and shun all newbies. Oh well..

Imagine Dr.Insano playing this game. o_O!

  • Trienco

Too bad there were no Cylon Leaders, I would have liked to see how well they actually play. As a quick guide to leaders:

Depending on number of players, Leaders draw the agenda from either the friendly or hostile pile. Because the game would be boring knowing exactly what side someone is on, “friendly” pile only means that the majority of card requires the humans to win and hostile is just the other way round. To make it even trickier, a “friendly” card says stuff like “you win, if the humans win, but have less than 3 population” and hostile might be “humans have to lose, but with 5 morale or more”.

Infiltration pretty much requires the players to believe that you're on their side or they won't let you run around the ship. Which is kind of hard to believe, when the player just caused a loss of population and still claims “I want to help you”.

On the other hand, when you have new players, I don't know if using the expansion right away might not be a bit much. New Caprica only happens later and doesn't affect the first part, but treachery, reckless checks and movement actions (actions done instead of a movement) are new.

There is also one little thing that is confusing me. Players can be executed instead of just putting them in the brick. While Cylons are pretty much just revealed (thanks to the resurrection ship), the only consequence of executing a human is losing 1 morale.

Now a numbers game. If you pretty much know there are 2 cylons with 5 players, you could just wait for the sleeper phase (second round of loyalty cards) and execute everybody once. Worst case you lose 3 morale, but since for some reason an executed player just picks a new character, but _keeping_ his loyalty cards… you can eradicate all doubt and prevent worse consequence for a seemingly low cost in morale.

Do I just underestimate the impact of morale? Is that an intended effect and one of the many decisions the game forces on you (as we say over here “chosing between plague and cholera”). Or could this be an annoying “strategy” that begs for a house rule (new loyalty cards for executed humans seem like a REAL deterrent from just executing everybody once to be on the safe side).

  • Il Principe

It's actually quite fun watching you play, reminds me of my own board game sessions we did couple of years back. But if you do it again, could you please make sure that the people in the background aren't constantly talking over the players, please? It was kind of hard to filter that out and make it much more exhausting to listen to, especially if, like me, you don't know the game and you have to concentrate to follow.

Other than that, I'd really enjoy more sessions (there was a CoC group that did podcasts of their sessions, which I also enjoy). What about the Buffy Board Game btw? Going to play that any time soon?

  • batlashes

I would love to play this but I am the only person in my peer group that would want to play. I am a secret geek!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dharrz David Harr

Doesnt Rob sound like Kevin Murphy?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ObieWanCoyote Christopher Lash

Given the request for somebody not to mess up her table in the first video. I would guess it was at a friends house.

  • ButtOneFlavor

And Rob sounds like Tom Servo. :P

  • StHubi

    Really nice video!

Now I am missing my old time, when we met every weekend to play AD&D or Shadowrun or any board game, that was not hidden before we entered the gaming room… Ah… The good old times!

At least I get to play Shadowrun once in a while. That reminds me: Did Spoony not mention some time ago, that he played AD&D over Skype with other guys from TGWTG? How do they do it? Is there a log or something? Because most of my players live FAR away now… Live has caught up with us.

  • VJS25

So we'd the same grasp of the rules ye guys did. Our first time we left out New Caprica and Cylon Leaders since we were feeling out the game and wanted it as simple as possible. Still was awesome! Liked the video, even though it was on the long side. Could have been worse, our one went on for around 5 hours cause our Admiral was our starting Cylon and kept picking jump distances of 1!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheUltimateBastich TheUltimateBastich

Holy smoke, I want to play that game =) Too bad I wont find it anywhere in my country and that Im the only one that would want to play it :/ Anyway, Im just 20 minutes in first vid and its already awesome :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Cook/506617422 Alex Cook

Is that guy in the red wearing an Alabama Crimson Tide shirt? If so, that's effin awesome.

  • Trienco

There are ways. From chatroom scripts that at the very least handle dice rolls to plain trust. If you have money to burn, Fantasy Grounds can be used as a virtual gaming table.

They apparently do streams of their D&D sessions, though I missed all of them so far and they don't seem to be kept and posted afterwards.

  • geekfury

Oh and by the way, anyone else think Jeff ( The old fellow with the rad beard? ) loked suspiciously like Obedieh Stain from the Iron Man movie?

  • batlashes

The people reading out loud at the other table off-screen are distracting to me, sometimes I can't concentrate on listening to what's going on because of it and it gets frustrating :( Perhaps next time there should be a mic in the middle of the table that doesn't pick up the whole room?
I'm enjoying anyway, thanks for putting it up! :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Gaffen/1118004381 Joe Gaffen

Heh, Spoony gotta say, you don't have the best poker face. The SECOND you became a Cylon your entire body language changed. Still very entertaining though, and I really wish I had 4 other people as nerdy (and into board-gaming) as me who I could play that with right now.

Anyway, if you do opt to do another one of these, I agree with the poster who suggest you do a rules briefing in the beginning of the video, so it'll be a bit more of a controlled setting for establishing how the game works. Also, maybe some added in notes on the screen, like you did when you received Loyalty cards, at other points in the game to drive home important events that otherwise might not have translated too well, or a running tab of the stats, or something. Either way, very entertaining, thanks for helping me waste 3 hours of my life!

  • neochivalry

The only thing that leaps at me regarding executions are as follows:
    1. You don't want to waste turns executing when more important things are going on.
    2. Executing Human character can have you lose out of the “special” and “once a game” abilities
    3. If you try to “execute everybody” overtly, the Cyclons will just reveal themselves and go out with a bang (If I understand correctly, executing Cyclons stops thier “nasti-gram” attempt and prevents them from being a human subversive, since they are forced to reveal.)

Keep in my this is said without me having the game or its rules. But just from what I've seen.

    • Anonymous

Some good points. I guess what’s also limiting the usefulness is that it only makes sense in the second half of the game. More often than not the Cylons will probably reveal themselves soon anyway. So it’s maybe not such a strong strategy to unbalance the game at this point.

The second point is true to some extent. You will of course get the benefits of the new character (though if you already used the once a game ability, you can’t use it for the new character).

  • http://twitter.com/Emptysquare Mitchell McIntyre

They triiiied to kill me with a Cylon!

  • RaiderRich2001

You know, Spoony's camera work is actually better than the camera work in the BSG TV series :P

  • http://www.facebook.com/jacob.trapp Jacob Trapp

You know, Noah, I think you'd really, really like this Italian game called Bang! It's has some similarities to this board game. My friends at college play it all the time.

  • Buttink

its more of an “i wish i could” because i really wanted to see the cards and junk. BUT, they read the important ones so yah its not all bad …

  • ButtOneFlavor

Ha, I just realized, that makes Eric Mike and Michelle Pearl. And Spoony is Cambot. XD

  • RaiderRich2001

Dr. Insano would either be in the brig or executed most of the game. You can't be obviously evil.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dimitrios.papadimitriou1 Dimitrios Papadimitriou

That did look like a really fun game, especially pre cylon reveal.

  • coyoterys

Is there a software version of this? I'd love to play, but none of my local friends would have the patience to play. :(

  • http://twitter.com/Mossa_san Stefan Nilsson

This was awesome! I realy liked it ^^

  • Salenstormwing

Dr. Insano isn't evil. Oh, just because his Vice President is Fu Manchu, he's a Cylon Supporter?

Maybe you're Cylooooo… Come here, my dear fellow. I want to show you the inside of an Airlock.

  • panouli

This is really awesome, I'm happy you uploaded the uncut version!

Now I need to get my hands on this game.

  • MetalNick

I don't like silence when I'm playing video games so this was fantastic background noise while I played Red Dead Redemption. I could pick up a bit on what you guys were talking about. The line that I remembered most was “I AM THE BEST PRESIDENT.” It looks to be a very interesting game.

  • Cthulhu07

    “I AM THE BEST PRESIDENT”

    A T-shirt waiting to happen…. :D

  • mrwednesdaynight

If you have any local hobby or geek shops, you could probably find the game and people willing to play. Most of the places have a day for board games. Support your local hobby shop!

Thats what i do too, mute the in game music and put spoony on….usually the wrestling rants cause they are long and i wont have to keep selecting different videos after 10 minutes lol

  • OneSideRed

I agree with most people here that the unedited version wasn't a bad thing. It's awesome to get to see how the whole thing plays out over a full game and quite interesting imo.

  • mrwednesdaynight

For people who would like to play board games like this or other geeky gaming activities, I would encourage you to seek out your local hobby shop. Not the kind of place that sells model trains but the kind of place that sells Magic the Gathering cards. Chances are they have a day for board games and a wide variety of games to choose from. You can even bring your own and twist some arms to play. And yes, sometimes its like pulling teeth to get people to try a different game. There small gaming stores across the country. Walk in some time and introduce yourself. These stores could use the support.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1143553858 Paul McKenzie

I like it…mainly because i have never seen an episode of the show, and probably never will but it doesnt matter in relation to the game. Most of the tie in boardgames i do have require at least a basic knowledge of the show and at most you are expected to know EVERYTHING. I may pick this up one day, but first i would have to be sure i had friends willing to play it with me…..seems larger groups work best for this one

  • http://twitter.com/Neonblue7 Thomas Kennedy

I bought this game for my friend last Christmas on your recommendation and we've played it every Sunday since! It was an easy buy for him since he has the entire TV series on DVD and Blueray. We've played it so much the skill cards are starting to fade away! I have a terrible poker face wile playing it and can never convince everyone else that I'm not a Cylon even when I'm not one. The expansion to the game really makes the game easier for the humans to win, not as easily as it was before we found out that you can not chain-bang Executive Orders on the same turn. It is a great game and I like it!

    Thanks Noah!

  • notyoursavior78

Well I'm watching it now. I'll be back in three hours lol well I'll watch at least a hour or so for now. But the game does sound pretty interesting and I bet once it gets going it'll be fun.

  • http://twitter.com/Mecahawk Tyler Burnette

You had some REALLY bad luck there at the start of part 2, you get your position taken away then the new president sees a loyalty card from you. Then he makes a really bad play by letting everyone know he didn't see your Cylon card

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jake-Alley/1116494958 Jake Alley

Interesting trial run here. Might be worth bringing a camera to a few more game nights if you can manage some of the following:
    - Games which demand less of your attention, giving you time to turn to the camera and blather some.
    - Games which are entirely too convoluted, so there's constant new rules to explain.
    - Games that are significantly shorter, not just for the sake of “dear gods 4 hours of uninterupted footage” but because people tend to be less animated the longer they're playing a single game.
    - Doing some serious editing. Here, there's some loooong stretches of everyone just sitting quietly and taking their turns, between outbursts of paranoia and roleplaying. Plus, might have been a good idea to chop this up more, since it's always awkward having to close the window when you're halfway through a 2 hour video stream that doesn't like to skip forward without fully loading.

All that said though? Camera placement wasn't TOO bad. In a perfect world it'd be nice to have a second one set up with a bird's eye view of the board, or focused on a particular spot to place cards and let the viewers read them… or heck. Just do some post-production. Finish the game, take it off into the corner with your camera, grab some nice close-ups of key components, edit them in as appropriate.

  • Rhesus

I wonder if this board game group is a regular thing… Like each and every friday night. Cause… Does he never party?

  • http://www.facebook.com/Treima Jimi Alexander

Damn, I wish I had a gaming group. I live two hours away from the nearest hobby shop, though.

  • notyoursavior78

Yeah Jake Alley had some good points. It would have been nice if Spoony was able to commentate and talk at the camera more while the game was playing and explain some things, but that wasn't completely detrimental to video. It really wasn't bad even at some of the more silent parts. I expected a little more action (I am aware its a board game though) but yeah some parts were kinda slow. I still had some good moments of laughter/chuckles and it does remind me back when I would get together with friends and play board games or hell even when I would try and play some board games by myself haha I'm such a loser lol

Now I have to at least watch a little more to see if Spoony's alignment changed though that was a good cliff hanger. Definitely still pretty interesting. I wanted to see someone get thrown in the brig though! Maybe things get more feisty in the second video.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mat-Cracknell/100000088385119 Mat Cracknell

HOLY SH*T SPOONY that killed me but i was gripped i couldn't stop watching …. right up untill the end where i kinda got bored but i was dissapointed that nobody got thrown out of an airlock or something or did they i might have fallen asleep XD but no really i was gripped i swear

  • yetiboy

Man, I now want to play that game as well!

  • yetiboy

    That's what he does here.

  • mrangrypants

I've played this game a good number of times. Pros of the game, it is very social and very engaging. It is a pretty simple game to understand. I also think that some of the additions that came with the expansion are very nice, mostly my favorite part is the Cylon leaders.

As far as cons go, I think the game can take a little too long sometimes. And from my experience out of 7 times playing the game I've only seen the humans win one time. This could be chalked up to the fact that me and my friends are a bunch of mother fuckers who trust no one. But I would still recommend this game to any one who is a fan of board gaming.

  • Alex

You should do a BANG! play, it’s pretty amazing.

I’m watching this now, and Jeff is stealing the show.

  • Hoiness

Looks like a great board game. Even though it was long, I was entertained. This also makes me want to get the game as well.

  • notyoursavior78

I really liked this, it is cool to see like well I'll refer to him as Noah (now) in real life just talking about how his viewers were all gone because this is a such a long video. It's a funny paradox. I'd like to see him record some more game sessions with his friends well playing different games. I'm not at the end yet, but this is cool. I like the strategy in it as well.

It's just enjoyable and I wish I had friends still that would want to do some old school board game nights. All we really do is get drunk and play PS3 or n64 lately lol well when we hung out at my place we would play Atari 7800 at least ;) Hangman is awesome!

  • The_Stig

OH NOES, SPOONEI IS TEH CYLON!!!

Well, we knew THAT, but what does the card say?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Mclaughlin/100000510688788 Mark Mclaughlin

Im hoping this leads to waves of more and more lets paly boardgame sessions hopefully with the inclusion of jeff for anger and lols.

  • notyoursavior78

I agree, I'm still working on this. 20 more minutes. I started this around 5pm and will finish it before midnight.

  • Booloo

Hellz yeah Spoonclon ftw. I wish I was part of this group it looks like a hillarious group of people.

  • graylord

I badly want to play this now, sadly nobody I know are into boardgames. Boardgames never really got popular here.

You are lucky to be able to play boardgames each week Noah.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ichriechst.sogut IchRiechst SoGut

    I knew it! S/He was a Cylon!

  • Penguinmaster

I really want to try this game now, the only problem is that none of my friends would be willing to sit down for this long of a period of time

  • notyoursavior78

    **Spoilers***

heh I actually thought the guy in b/t Noah and Michelle (Eric I believe) coulda been a Cylon. He seemed sorta shady (Michelle didn't seem to be one entirely the whole game. She kept it mostly hidden I thought and she said she was waiting for the right moment for her reveal earlier) and was a alcoholic to boot lol but yeah in that reveal when Spoony saw his disposition he was clean (at the time Spoony was too). I really want to see these same people record another game session. It did seem to get really hard though in the expansion when they landed on that place and had to just wait and try to bid their time. The Cylons just broke them down.

  • http://twitter.com/feValves Fe Valves

That was great! After the first video on the BSG boardgame, a friend of mine bought it and we played it a few times through, it was awesome. We were waiting for this video to come out ever since and I got to say the final result is very pleasing.

Not sure if your friends would be into the idea, but I'd like to see more of this stuff, with other boardgames the group plays. It'd be a nice way to get to know some more games, and I suppose it's one of the simplest video series you can put together, it's just the matter of recording the sessions and uploading to bing.

Anyways, great work as always, very entertaining video, this one!

  • beeohthree

That was an entertaining three and a half hours of board gaming. :-) Though some others are right, your poker face in the second video isn't very good. It's good stuff anyways.

  • http://twitter.com/warterra Rigal Terra

I think this is how we all thought Spoony spent his weekend.

  • SenorPwnage

I just finished watching the videos, and that was a pretty fun game. It was so obvious who the first cylon was, though. The suspicious looks and skill challenge fuckery gave it away quickly.

  • panouli

Oh! And another thought, though I realize it may be a hassle: it would be really cool if you would upload videos every so often of other Friday night games you play. It's fun watching you play tabletop with a bunch of people, the banter is more than enough to keep me interested and probs other people too.

  • http://twitter.com/TheTemplarion Templarion

That really was awesome. I think the uncut video was definitely the way to go, as it lets us see all the little things that go into it. I can see what you mean about you not having a great poker face, but at the same time I think you handled it well, acting the same before and after becoming a Cylon. Well, if anything you've managed to convince me to purchase the game for myself. Now I just need to find people to play it with…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25102916 Bryan Edwards

I'm glad you posted it uncut. Sure, some sections weren't too interesting, but overall it was a fun 3+ hours. Thanks, Spoony!

  • http://twitter.com/SkyeVeran Skye Veran

That was a fun video. Could have used a bit more screaming Spoony (“I AM THE BEST PRESIDENT *EVER*!!!”), but it was still enjoyable to watch.

Spoony, if you can do this easily and the other players don't mind, it'd be a cool regular feature. It wouldn't set back the creation of reviews since you're essentially just setting up a camera during a game you'd be playing *anyway,* and it'd tide us over between videos.

But I won't get greedy. Thanks for uploading, it seems like a cool game to play.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ViperXX79 Thomas Lee Cook

This was really cool Spoony. Uncut is definitely the way to go. Like other people have said it would be great if this were a regular thing too.

  • Supathief

This video was pretty interesting and fun. All we need now is an uncut video of a D&D session and we're all set.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Evan-Psencik/669671734 Evan Psencik

This is one of my favorite board games!
I try to get a game in at BGGcon every year.

  • pretzels

Pretty engaging vid actually. When you had to chose which loyalty card to peek, I too would have picked eric. He was too stoic to get a good read on. Fun stuff.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Mrsuperduck Michael Conner

I don't like BSG, but the board game actually looks kind of interesting.

I really liked this whole video setup too, it was just like a casual time with a group of people, nothing SUPER SPECIAL SPECTACULAR, but that wasn't what it was about.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jack-Pulsar-Browneye/100000696866173 Jack Pulsar Browneye

This should be a normal thing diffrent games every week unedited you can call it “Playing with spoony” or”A friday night with Spoony and Friends”

  • http://www.facebook.com/cardno C William Cardno

You have just inspired me to start up a board game group and BSG looks like a kick ass game as well. I am amazed at how much fun I had just watching you guys play this.

Side note – Rob, i think it is, looks like he could be cast as the captain of a ship in an internet series ala Red Dwarf. Just saying. :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/cjbazin Chantel Josephin Heart Bazin

    awesome do more.

By the looks of it i'd say that the expansion sucks monkey balls. I sat through whole thing and the last 30 minutes i didn't like very much.

The basic version seems hell lot of fun though

  • http://twitter.com/Enerccio Peter Vanusanik

Man I wish there was an online version of this board game….

  • Garret02

Man, you're so lucky to have people to regulary play board games (and having board games too). In my case even D&D or Vampire The Masquerade sessions are kind of a miracle :/

  • http://www.matsern.net Matsern

    There!
Just finished watching the game, started yesterday and took 2 pauses (pretty long I might add).
I think it was fun to see you guys play BSG, mainly because I've never played these kind of games myself (so I really used the majority of the time to try and understand the general- and end game rules).

Thank you, Noah, and I would like to add a request at the very end; it would be real fun to see a D&D session with your group too.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheUltimateBastich TheUltimateBastich

    Yeah, I agree ^^

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheUltimateBastich TheUltimateBastich

Holy shit, I found out there is Battlestar Galactica board game in my country, but it costs around 60 of US bucks, which is bitch cuz Im broke and my PC needs serious renovation in first place :/

  • http://twitter.com/ThePrometh Rasmus Oskar Thorsen

I would really like to see spoony doing D&D, I watching the stream of him and LordKat.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Darren-Maley/100000467088117 Darren Maley

Loved the video. I just bought this game on the strength of this play through, if anyone knows where i can buy some friends to play it with let me know.

  • Cthulhu07

I'm gonna get the game later this week. Spoony & co's play through got me convinced it would be a good buy. :D

  • godofplague

Great vid Spoony I was bored today. 3rd week of surgical recovery Cabin Fever! I didn't care for the show watched it for Boomer :) Grace Park. The game looks like a ton of fun though. Only problem was the guy talking about vikings was frequently louder than you all and gave me a headache.

yeah raise there morale as you steal thier food or dump thier fuel would be a great cylon ploy.

  • BraveDave88

I'm a BSG board game veteran, so that looked like a lot of fun you guys were having there. The only thing I noticed was that you weren't really taking advantage of Ellen Tigh's killer ability to draw extra cards every round by giving one of her cards to another player…

    *spoiler*
…or was that an attempt to avert suspicion? :)

  • kikyoo

Watched the whole thing rawr. Spoony's poker face could use some work. Should have went all in for the mega crisis!

Fun looking game. If I knew more people who were into board games I might try to get my hands on it and play it.

  • http://twitter.com/BoomDowg BoomDowg

The guy on you're right, has a really cool beard! ;)

  • godofplague

President Tigh She'll raise your morale ;)

  • Hipsu

The expansion is good. The last 30 minutes of New Caprica is an official variant that came with the expansion and you can totally play without it.

But the expansion brings lots of other cool stuff like the Pegasus ship, new Characters, Crisis and Skill cards.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Justin-Toner/100000333062002 Justin Toner

That was alot of fun to watch Spoony, glad you put it up uncut. The game looks like alot of fun, esp with the Pegasus Expansion since you get more good characters, cards and the Pegasus itself. I loved your “Im the best President EVER!!”
    line. That was hilarious.

After seeing it in action, I'm definatly going to get it sometime this summer when I can afford it and the expansion.

If you do more board game videos in the future, that would be really cool.

  • http://twitter.com/hillisko Henri Hirvelä

Great s*it man! BTW do you have a game called Formula D it's board game.
Please respond to twitter if you want.

  • Trocadora

It'd be awesome to see more of this long stuff. Endurance runs for the win.

  • http://www.facebook.com/robbie.ridgway Robbie Ridgway

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing this done on a game of Nightmare. Blag 'ole!

  • dudeboobs

Spoony, you gotta advertise your D&D and other board games more. They are entertaining as hell. Also, you and the other TGWTG dudes should do D@D games on a more consistent basis and advertise them. Love watching the ustream of it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Filipe-Isabelinho/100000173498272 Filipe Isabelinho

OMG what a bunch of nerds!!!! (says the guy who just watched the whole thing =P)

I'm just kidding ofc, I'm seriously thinking of getting this game, if my friends are up for it. I really liked watching too, you should do other board games, just don't repeat the same game again, do others you think we might like =)

  • The_Stig

    Mmmm, Strawberries.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jack-Pulsar-Browneye/100000696866173 Jack Pulsar Browneye

You should get a game called last night on earth is a zombie board game where 4 players play the heros and 2 players run the zombies it's a ton of fun you guys might like it.

  • Tokolosh

Holy crap! You actually did it, you mad bastard!

Playing along at home, and about halfway through atm. Diggin' the Admiral's playstyle, reminds me of a friend of mine. You're taking the role of a politician quite seriously, Spoony, it will surprise me greatly if you turn out to be the Cylon. My money's on Boomer. A little too helpful, if you ask me.

    Lookin' forward to the unmasking!

    - Toko.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Malaczynski-Daniel/1002879768 Malaczynski Daniel

Sitting through the whole thing is a bitch, but still an enjoyable one.
But the idea of multiple cameras would really work better for larger boardgames like this one.
It doesn't matter if the board is smaller, because the comment and descriptions are more imporatant than seeing the cards themselfs..
And how much did you cut out eventually?

  • http://twitter.com/getintheVandell Vandell

The next time this is done, you should make a “spoiler” for your own loyalty card, like a three second buffer time to allow the viewer to mute and/or look away, and make it so that WE don't know if you're a cylon or human. I think it'd be interesting.

[Note: this was posted before Noah was dealt his loyalty card. So maybe he DOES do this for all I know.]

  • http://www.facebook.com/garren.haskell Garren Haskell

Watched the whole thing. Loved it. I felt like I was there playing with you guys.

Also this looks like a blast to play. I love the deception cylon angle of play a lot!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zlatan-Andreev/100000672535638 Zlatan Andreev

Awsome video, not as boring as you might think.
Definitely record more board games.Maybe make it monthly or something like that.Judging from the comments we all love the video.
But i didn't understand why Michelle revealed herself to be a cylon;and also why they didn't throw you in detention. And one last thing: at about the end when there was a card: Lose 1 morale and each human player draws 2 skill cards i think you didn't draw cards :P – that was BEFORE you “pealed your face off”.

  • URGMA

maybe they wouldn't think you were a silon (however you spell that) if you didn't keep saying: BECAUSE I'M NOT A SILON!!!

  • http://twitter.com/LucasChad Lucas Allen

I admit I had a tough time following the rules because the game looks highly complicated! Whatever happen to just going from start to finish like in the old days?

  • http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

Only about half way through but I really have to say, I'm enjoying this. I'm able to follow what's going on easily enough (helps you keep saying what the cards are and not just the colors) and it's darn interesting.

Though the more I see of the little ships the more it looks like the Babylon 5 micromachines.

  • allessander

How about a recorded gaming session of D&D? Any setting, I'd love to see the actual p&p (instead of the computer adaptations, such as ToEE, BG 2,IWD, DS:SL) thing going on. Pick any setting, be it Ravenloft, Dragonlance, Dark Sun (Oh, pick that one, please), or Forgotten Realms, I'd simply love to see you and your group play for 4-5 hours (that'd be like a God damn marathon).

  • mrrubino

This looks a lot like when I used to play Arkham Horror (well not exactly), except after 2 hours, everybody didn't go “**** it. Cthulhu wins.” and migrate to the living room to watch a movie.

  • MFlorian

Inspirational speech? You're playing Ellen Tigh! What did you say? “A chicken in every pot and a blowjob in every garage”?

  • anonns

you should have labeled this as a “Let's Play”

  • http://twitter.com/ThePrometh Rasmus Oskar Thorsen

I agree, Dark Sun would make a marvelous setting. I'm currently following the D&D cast from the guys behind Pennyarcade and it's really entertaining. Also, I find it helps my DM'ing if I listen and take notes of what works :)

  • TheCrowFairyTale

Oh if only Dr. Insano were there playing… You think he'd get along with Cylons? I also wanted to mention that you did a wonderful job with this recording. It's nice to see a “slice of your life” with your gaming group. I'd like to see more videos like this in the future. Far as the game it looks AWESOME! I'm not even a fan of Battlestar Galactica and am curious in watching the series after this review.

  • http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

*phew* actually got a chance to watch the other video

It's a bit much to watch in one sitting but breaking it up like that worked great.

And I know you were commenting on the sound, Spoony but I thought the sound was fine.

Very much second the suggestion to watch you guys play some D&D

    thank you!

  • Strelnikov

Man, that game was Rube Goldberg machine* – even if I knew the rules I would have to keep the manual on the table just to be certain I was doing it right….I liked the “hidden Cylon” bit; it was like the murderer in Clue, but the traitors are in on it and can screw things up before they are found out. Jeff was the perfect counterpoint to the more serious players of the game; calling his character “Tylenol” and the toasters “Klingons” was good, though I think the game got to him once the players made it to the camp on New Caprica. So yeah, it was an interesting video and the game Spoony played had a more believable ending than either the `70s or new Battlestar Galactica!

    End of line.

Yeah, endurance run man. By the end I was just ready for it to be over. You should do some D&D on Dark Sun. Allows for a lot of creative input and I think your audience is a bit less sci-fi nerd and more like the renaissance fair kind, like I am.

    Keep kicking ass spoonyman.

  • http://twitter.com/KaiLeingod John Spearing

damn you spoony one i bought this game because of these videos its awesome

  • http://www.facebook.com/TornadoCreator Billy McKenna

You guys should play Arkham Horror, I think that game would suit your group quite well. That and D&D 4th Edition. I'd love to see you guys playing those.

  • zerorequiem

I definitely enjoy your long vlogs the best

  • devilfish

Arkham Horror is awesome. I love how frantic and menacing the board can get and how it's one of those few games that's truly 100% co-op. Definitely my favorite by a long shot, although I like Arabian Nights too. Very atmospheric games.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Skowronski/725425585 Chris Skowronski

Hey Spoony! Love this game! I've played it alot since I picked it up, the whole deception angle of this game makes it unlike anything I've ever played.

Just a note: I noticed when you lost the presidency during the crisis card near the beginning of the first video, even if someone isnt able to pay the cost of a decision they MAY still pick it! You would have been president still! Long live President Spoony!

  • ThomasMink

I'd so pick this up if I had any friends who would be willing to play.. but.. oh well. :/

Amazing, such a good game and group. Love that there was a new player and the rules were clearly stated. But… better than those things, I thought you glancing at the camera and commenting made me feel like I was within the group. Even if it was just a quick glance.

Cheers, no matter what I watch from your site ( even if it is 5 hours long – lol ), I know I can't go wrong.

First time commenting but I've seen a lot of your work. One word – Professional

  • zylofan

I had never heard of this game till now. I got it right after I watched this, and now it's easily my favorite game! Which my friedns find funny as I never did like this series, btu they were all fans of it. This made it all the more sweet as I crushed them like the cylon I was. thank you for showing off this game. I now have epic game sessions to talk about for a lifetime.

Spoony!Seriously! Why did you oblige people and show this?! I am HOOKED! I actually bought the game (even though it’s not imported in my country and it’s SUPER expensive to import) and am now waiting for it’s delivery.
I can’t believe they made such an interesting game out of such a boring show.
Also admit it…you like to play Baltar not because this is your inner image, but because you like to have Caprica Six naked in your head :)
Believe me, i sympathize with that…I REALLY do :)

Just rewatched it ^^ That’s one of the things that are great about this game. It’s almost as fun watching the game as it is participating in it.

Would love to hear what you think of the new expansion “Exodus”. I haven’t had time to really try it yet. But it seems pretty awesome. Most likely better then the Pegasus expansion.

I just watched all of both videos. I bet that could have gone on allot longer. I was wondering though. What happens if someone who really is human is playing to the detriment of humanities chances? Would it still hurt morale if you spaced or executed them?

    • S P

If someone is a human and playing against the humans, well that is just a player you dont want to play with! I guess either they dont want to win and have fun OR theyre waiting to hopefully become a cylon in the second half?
Playing with people like that just isnt fun and not how the game is supposed to be played.
So yes, you do still lose a morale and go through all of the steps if you execute a human.
Also, if theyre human and die, they’ll come back as a player again most likely human, just to continue hurting the game :S
Not someone id want to play with.

Is there other people in the room? Cause I keep hearing someone and I’m like wtf?

I just watched the full game for the second time. It’s very cool. I hope Spoony will make more of those, not just board games but maybe also classic rpg sessions – that would also be great. Hope to watch Spoony play a game again.

The final four are duking it out on the big TV downstairs, and I’m holed up in my room watching strangers play a board game based on a show I’ve never watched.

I think I can hear my dad crying.

You got a lot of rules wrong (but a lot of people do in their first few games).

Destiny deck isn’t revealed by ICs in the Pegasus expansion.
Boomer drew two skill cards on Resurrection ship of the same type. First, your two cards you draw as a cylon must be from different sets. Secondly, on Resurrection ship you may only draw ONE skill card. Thirdly, Boomer used a movement ability while on Resurrection ship and then played her Super Crisis – Super Crisis may only be played on Caprica.

There were plenty of times that people were “forced” to choose an option on a “player chooses” card where they shouldn’t have been. On a “Player/President/Admiral/CAG chooses…” card, you can always make either choice even if you don’t have the resources to carry out the consequences (unless the card specifically says you can’t). This means you can choose the option to discard 3 cards if you have only two cards.

Early on, somebody played Support the People and players made illegal draws with it. When drawing cards, you may ONLY draw colors within your skill check unless EXPLICITLY STATED that you can draw from outside (such as with Baltar’s Delusional Intuition).

I skipped over New Caprica since I don’t find it very interesting, but I’m sure there were probably some rule violations/mistakes there since it can be confusing to new players.

A lot of secrecy rules were violated – at one point, Spoony lists the cards in his hand and Tigh reveals the strength of the cards he added to Boomer’s supercrisis!

I feel like humans played a lot better than cylons but ultimately lost to rules mistakes. There were a lot of opportunities for Spoony to seize control of the ship – going along with Helo’s idea to execute Tigh, and then turning against Helo for leading a witch hunt when it was revealed Tigh was a human, would have been brilliant.

I’m surprised that no effort was made to airlock Boomer after she topped a crisis with no jump icon. This is almost never a good idea; while the crisis may be relatively harmless, it’s still an extra hurdle that serves only to drain cards or lower a resource. But nobody threw any serious accusations her way. The most notable rare exception is Legendary Discovery, which is a pretty big game changer (for those not familiar with BSG, it is a crisis that potentially adds and extra distance but has no jump icon).

Overall a good game. I was rooting for humans because Helo and Chief cracked me up.

If anybody is curious to play the game but lacks a good gaming group, you can actually play it online using a program called Vassal and the Battlestar Galactica module.
