you rock spoony you are flipping hillarious however i dissagree about ffx sucking i agreed with ff8 but not x its one of my favs it has the best fighting out of any ff game and for its time the graphics were amazing and i also liked the story though i do agree the acting is pretty bad and i dissagree on blitzball however. when i first started playing ffx i hated it but as i played more i decided to give blitzball a try again and ended up loving it you just gotta give it a chance

Oh my god I think this game drove Spoony insane. I have to admit, I never thought I'd see it come to this, but I suppose after so much FFX it's inevitable.

First up, the tournament was in Luca, not Bevelle and that is the only criticism of this review I have to make.
I have to say, I enjoyed this game when I first played it. If I had picked it up without knowing it was a final fantasy (seriously I don't think after FF9 I would have been able to tell) I probably would have hated it, but then I was one of those stupid kids who will buy anything and say it's good because I paid for it. As such I know this review series is going to break my heart but hey, progress.
I can name the character designer straight up. He's been designing characters for Square since before FF7 and I'm serious when I say I have never seen a more concerted effort to get fired IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. All of the characters he designs have a gel budget that all the gold in Fort Knox couldn't cover and dress like they ran a weed whacker through a clothing store and came out wearing the debris. (Plus they never change, how has nobody noticed that, Cloud's one blue polo neck sweater must be honking by now.)
I hope when you get to it you have a verbal bitchslap waiting for Auron's line just before Yunalesca “Stay and fight your sorrow!”

Whatever fond memories I had of this game when I played it as a Freshman in High School…are already gone. Yeah, this game is…bad…

Few minor points. Luca is where the tournament is. Bevelle is like…Spira's Vatican City I guess. And, yeah, I don't think they expected Sin to be defeated by ancient cannons and giant chicken knights. IIRC they were just trying to get it in range of some special weapon that failed spectacularly anyway. Nothing major though.

Even when I enjoyed the game, moments like the one where they laugh were just so damned awkward. Also…when I think back it seems like half the characters you meet turn out to be dead.

The REALLY creepy thing is that big scary Lovecraftian horror that Seymour summons? That's the soul of his dead mom. I am not kidding. Seymour uses his dead mom as a weapon. Classy.

Loveeee it. When you started playing the Hallelujah Chorus when Auron was walking up the stairs… A+ work. And the Aladdin song at the end… Insano's D: face cracked me up.

Could use a little less splicing of films/TV shows though. Part of what made your FFVIII review so amusing were your own jokes/observations, not witty one-liners. But this is still excellent.

Noah, if you ever sing that song again their will be consequences. It was every bit as awkward and painful as the cut scenes in this game, and now to sooth that pain I have to play Heart of Fire from Castlevania in a continuous loop for several hours.

That being said, hurray for a new episode of this review. As always your harsh judgment and ridicule seems to be spot on.

To be honest, yes I did like this game, however it still had its BLAZINGLY stupid moments, like the Goers (which I'm thinking in the original japanese meant something else) and our local Tim Curry look-alike moose Seymour. But I'm sure someone has already said it, but the reason Auron keeps his arm in that sleeve is because it's some sort of Ronin thing, you keep it in when you're a sword for hire, its weird.

The forced laughter scene almost made me cry. The insincerity and forceful/fakeness of Tidus' laugh was more akin to a man who lost everything and is going insane with sadness trying to convince himself that his isnt going insane.

Yeah, sure, let me explain why those are pretty weak.

1: Oooooh! They can fill empty squares with Strength spheres! Which you can do, you know,by putting a sphere in an empty node and considering that you can apparently get them rather easily by fighting monsters to fill said nodes anyway why should I care?

2: They still fucked up their jobs protecting her, that excuse is like a kid apologizing to the cops for getting tricked by the child molestor when the babysitter was too busy screwing her boyfriend. Their job was to watch her, her aplologizing just makes her look like a doormat.

3: Yes, I'd so act like that considering it was either that or GET EATEN BY A MONSTER! Come on man! Are you really going to complain to the guy who is the only real reason you're still alive right now despite the fact he transported you to this strange new world? Besides, Sin apparently destroyed the city and everyone inside, even if he had somehow survived what would've been there to go back to?

4: I'm not seeing that, just another annoying pretty boy right now. Maybe you should wait to call Spoony out on this until he gets to the part where he actually does become likable and addresses the point in a video. But at this point, I can't see me caring about this character, How can I enjoy character development if it takes hours of gameplay to even get rolling? More importantly, while I'm a big fan of going up against the fundamentalist nutters, I also believe in respecting religions and so far from what I've seen in the story, all Titus has done is disrespect their religion like an a-hole, not endearing. But still, maybe you should wait to see what spoony has to say about this so called development in character when it occurs, not before. Cause until then he's still an annoying prick the player has to deal with.

5: So you even admit the hair is stupidly ridiculous… what was your point? I mean, I don't care if your daddy had a mohawk, it's a hairstyle, it doesn't get passed down genetically. It's hair, hair doesn't contort into antlers, does not make sense.

6: The outfits still have to make some sense feasibly. If I'm a soldier and I'm given a frilly pink dress with no real body armor or what not I'll look stupid for example. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far, if the outfits look ridiculous, constricting, uncomfortable, unfeasible, non-sensical, gawdy beyond belief or in any way that contradicts their job or function it's not gonna fly. I mean, giant dome earmuffs, what is their purpose? What do they signify? The one legged pants-shorts, what is their function or statement? That he's a rebel or something? If the fashion customs make no sense suspension of disbelief ain't gonna save you. Believe me, I once had a character that dressed barechested, toting guns and grenades on a leather belt strap, then I realised that looked fucking stupid and kinda gay when I got older and gave him a combat vest made of kevlar. I'm still fine tuning him, but at least his clothing makes more sense now.

Look I don't agree with everything Spoony says either, I still like BioShock 2 and Brutal Legend and think they're worth buying and not just renting, but that's no reason to dismiss some valid criticques. I loved Kick-Ass for example but even I realised the people who complained were right, Kick-Ass did get overshadowed in his own movie. There were valid reasons to hate it.

I wish Spoony had actually played Final Fantasy IX. That game was so hideously awful that FFX was a breath of fresh air by comparison. FFX at least had a few likable characters and well-developed story.

Heck, FFIX made me like FFVIII! (Comparatively, VIII is better than IX. VIII's time travel plot is way easier to understand.)

Just as awesome as the game :) (I'm one of the people you've ordered euthanized, although I agree with your gripes thus far). This game to me is the equivalent of those Reb Brown movies that you aknowledge as bad but are still really entertaining.

Btw, the arm in the sleeve is a masterless samurai thing, as is the bottle of sake. As for the temples, they're a pain in the ass because in order to get Anima (the thing Seymour pulls out of hell) you need to get the secret chest in all of them.

Finally, if you think Blitzball is bullshit, it's only because you havent tried to fully ultilize Wakka as a fighter in the main game. It's at this point that it goes from boring and irritating to the bane of your existance, as you need to win about 300-400 games before you can fully unlock Wakka's best equipment and Overdrives. The sickening thing is that if you actaully put yourself through this, Wakka is unstoppable. The Attack Reels at the end of the game make him do over a million damage in one turn. It's still not worth it.

I love these videos, but its kind of annoying that your leaving out a lot of aspects of the game. Like the sphere grid, the core part of gameplay, and one of my major annoyances.

Seymour gains an air of intimidation to him as the game goes on. SHAME HIS DESIGN COMPLETELY TOPPLES IT. I felt mugged every time I saw the stupid clown.

Okay, yeah, the story is crap, I gathered that much when I learned that woman with nads was the lead character way back when I played this game myself 8 years ago, what else you got?

I've never finished it, only got as far as some boss that has Yuna's name and got murdered on it's third form repeatedly, but from what I remember the game part of this game was actually pretty good, unlike FFVIII which is my personal definition of hell and has at least five problems in basically every single frame rendered by that poor PS1.

So, yeah, I've yet to see you make a convincing argument that this game is anywhere near the same league as 8 when it comes to sheer horribleness, though it does top it in terrible character design. (I think the only sensibly dressed character of the bunch was Riku, because she wasn't wearing enough clothing to take 20 minutes every day getting in and out of)

I guess I must be mad then. I actually enjoyed blitzball in this game.

As I remember Seymour wanted all those people killed in Operation Mihen. Something about they were excommunicated, and now that they failed everyone lost hope. They have no choice but to go back to Yevon…because they control the summoners? aeons? something about control.

You singing at the end was completely unexpected and the funniest thing I've seen in a while. Good times.

I have only one thing to say about this review: the Blitzball stadium is in Luca, not Bevelle. Bevelle is the holy city of Yevon, which (Spoiler) is stupid because Yevon was from Zanarkand, which in itself begs the question why he had Sin destroy it 1000 years ago. Maybe he got bullied as a kid and wanted revenge.

Sure, Yuna an company don't seem to be in that much of a hurry, but Sin destroying an entire town is a pretty frequent occurrence.

To put it clearly, the people of Spira have been experiencing a continuous apocalypse for a millenium, their only hope of an end or the briefest respite has “succeeded” a scant handful of times and even then barely slowed it down, and the only source of any joy in their lives is blitzball. Final Fantasy X has the darkest story I have ever seen.

I can't bitch about 10 after 10-2 came out, Spoony I dare you to play that game and try to live through it, I know a lot of people who gave up playing that one . Dear god it was…….like Sailor Moon crossed over with 3 terrible Charlie's Angels wannabes. In 10 you don't have have Sailor Moonish transformations from one slutty outfit to the next. I can't say low riding mini skirts because not all were skirts. You have Yuna trying to change to more or a sex appealing thing I guess, I dunno. I personally think they wanted to shut up bitching fanboys for saying Yuna wasn't hot. Riku turned into decided to go with a thief/hippie look, who is more annoying then she was in here. Leblanc was a replacement for Donna, being Yuna's rival. she game me headaches, granted that game in general gave me them for trying to figure out shit in there. But at least Donna isn't wearing Leblanc's crappy color barely covering Lady Luck outfit.

The only thing I did like from 10 was Anima and Auron, thats it. The worse thing is you have to make sure you did these two temples right in order to get anima and the magnus sisters. Although I am waiting to hear what you have to say about Yuna's execution…….I mean wedding and its to Seymour. To me it felt like an execution at first even though it was a “forced” marriage. That moment had me laughing, even more so after New Moon with Bella jumping off a cliff.

One of the most suprising things that will happen later on in the game is that once you find out that the Yevon religion is corrupt…you and the majority of the world instantly turn from it…And in FFX-2, most people dont give a damn about it.

Really? so, you follow a religion for over 1000 years, devote your whole lives to it and then after one single little incident, everyone turns from it?!?! and they dont even feel any psycological trauma for 'what happens if you turn from Yevon' or anything? And what about the devout followers (especially the ones in the PAL and international versions who come after you with Dark-Aeons)…dont you think that if someone turned from Yevon, they'd be hunted down and killed? But nope! 2 years later, in FFX-2, people turn the temples into their very own mansions or workshops and so on…That would be like turning the Vatican into a public toilet….Are you seriously telling me that everyone was ok with it and thought “Nah, we dont need this religion that we followed blindly for 1000 years anymore….It hasnt indoctriated me at all….none at all, even though I thought machina was bad 2 years ago and that I followed 'teachings' passed down the years from parent to child…..I can turn from it easy as pie….Even though I..you know…saw Aeons (unlike our worlds religions that has no actual physical proof) and know magic and saw the devil (sin) which means my religion is more believable…nah..I'm fine!

He then crawled through the Zanarkand stadium, through Zanarkand, through Mount Gagazet, through a cave, through the calm lands, through that icy place, and then reaching the entrance of Bevelle, where he was found by Kimahri. He was taken to Rin, and that's where he died. The next day he awoke to go kick some more ass.Not only that, the hit mangled his arm, so he crawled with only one arm. Its why he always has the arm in his cloak, whilst he didnt in the flashbacks with jecht and braska, his form as a memory being has his arm restored, but in actuality it was broken in multiple places before he died.

Another hillarious video, but what's so bad about Final Fantasy X. I thought it was decent and my dad liked it because my mom got for him with his PS2. (But without a memorie card. XD) Persona 4 is definetely my favorite RPG but I don't understand why you treat Final Fantasy X like turd. Anyway, you sing pretty good. I'm an okay actor but I suck at singing.

It is funny how you critic the japanese character design, but if you look for the most of american character designing is pretty shitty too. Theres is not much creativity in american characters it's like are all clones, muscle bald men with guns, that's pretty much what is about american c. Also american characters are sexists, all the women looks a hot bitch, with a tigh cloths and sexual appealing, they are brainless and not interesting but their 3d butts and tities. Differ of when it comes to japanese female characters while they actually have a personality and they can be enjoable for example: Lighting of FFXIII. Anyway I'm not standing for the japanese character design as soon as I hate when they made them so gay, and this often happens, anyway, when it comes to originality and female characters the J. c.design is by far far better than american.

Zev Ronso (in Luca) Is an immediately good shooter and strong attacker. Stays strong
Naida (calm lands) one of tHE best attackers/defenders/passers. She just can't shoot for crap.
Durren(gorge next to calm lands) best goalie hands down. Once he learns super goalie and golden hands (whatever those abilities are) nobody'll ever make a point against you.
when doing the tournaments you don't want to abuse that glitch because you win the tournaments by HAVING more shots than the rest. so if you win them all but another team gets more shots in the one game they did win to beat you, you lose.
As far as a ball as a weapon, one of Yuffie's weapon in FFVI was a ball! fairly strong too but no materia slots.
I'm surprised noone's said anything about Biran… wearing NOTHING pretty much. He's like a chippendale's beast stripper.

I remember when I played this game back when I was about 12 and I hadn't actually developed decent taste in anything. I distinctly recall watching that laughing scene thinking as close to 'WTF?' as my 12 year old brain could come up with.

The next boss fight is a complete bitch. I spent hours trying to beat Anima, time and time again getting wiped out by its stupid Instant KO attack. I don't think it's fair if the only way you can survive the boss battle long enough is to summon your Aeons and have them killed instead. This is why I especially hate Seymour, for putting me through hours of that crap.

I'm a big Final Fantasy fan, and like Spoony I agree that the games where great early on and “didn't start getting bad until ten”.

Final Fantasy 7 is often toated as the best game ever, it's not, it has major flaws and I could rant for hours on the things I hate about FF7, yet I still love it, it's one of my favourite games. It pisses me off, but I have played it through 4 times and will do so again once I get it for my PSP on the Playstation Network.

Final Fantasy 8 is quite possibly my favourite game of all time but again Spoony is right. Some of the parts of this game are outright stupid and the story only makes sense if you assume the “Squalls dead” crowd have it right (google it), but I personally find this ADDS to the game, as it makes you think.

Final Fantasy 9, again very much like Spoony is a game I feel much disconnect from because I could never finish it. I barely remember it compared to the other FF games. It wasn't bad, but the art design and oddball characters put me off. I'm sure I'd like it now if I gave it another try, but I've always put if off.

Final Fantasy 10 was the one I hated the most. Liner story line, no open world map, a main character I really dislike, a love story I don't want to see resolved and a storyline far to similar to the story of Jesus and his 12 deciples for the atheist in me to feel entirely comfortable with. But it's still up there in my top ten games of all time, I love the battle system, I actually liked Blitzball (although I agree with Spoony's complaints) and I find the game fairly challenging is using the expert sphere grid (Americans, get the International version, your version sucks, it's too fucking easy).

So what I'm saying is simple. I'm a Final Fantasy fanboy, I always have been and always will be. It's the game series that ment the most to me growing up and I honestly enjoy a nostaligic playback of those games more than any playback of Sonic or Mario. But like an overbearing child with there overacheiving children, even though I love them to peices, each A grade they get is not enough because deep down I know they could have got an A*. I guarentee, Spoony is much the same. I bet he loves Final Fantasy, afterall, he's devoting a lot of time to the games isn't he.

About blitzball, After unlocking a certain move for Tidus which can be obtained on this ship he becomes the most fucking cheapest thing ever in a minigame. He gets a move called Jecht Shot which basicly blasts the worlds most deadliest weapon into the guts of up two people preventing them from blocking before trying to kick the ball into the goal.

I still remember getting to the blitzball tournament..being completely underwhelmed and unimpressed..and all hopes faded that this game would ever be worth finishing…and a great description on the temples too..totally worthless! Patiently awaiting your next installment..

It's just a joke dude and besides Dagon sounds a whole lot better than Anima, almost sounds like enema. Also does anyone know the name of the track that plays when Seymour summons Dagon? I've heard that track before but just can't place it.

Spoony, you need to play Final Fantasy 9. Its easily the most underrated and overlooked game in the series, I mean there is no weird continuity, the characters are all likable, the story makes perfect sense(it doesn't leave you slack-jawed), and I can't think of one moment in the game where I thought “WTF? Why did they do that!? It doesn't make any logical sense!”. The characters are not over-the-top and there is actual character development(antithesis of almost every FF game) without divesting too much from the actual story. The only bad thing about the game is the Tetra Master game, but it is consistent and can be mastered, and is much better than the Quad game from FF8. I STRONGLY suggest you give it a try.

I love this game, but you tackle every stupid thing about it perfectly. Nice job, liking this a lot more than the VIII review.

The dinosaur thing may make sense. Elephants look impressive in battle, but all the History and Discovery channel shows I've seen indicate they were actually not that great against disciplined troops. Maybe the amphibious dino thing is decent transport, but as a war creature it will do more damage to your allies.

You should totally make a cover CD for Disney songs spoony :D, or at least sing more in your videos that would be awesome to.

wow after i watched this i had to go rent Aladdin and i waited to till all my room mates left and i starting to sing it and then they walked in on me a grown man watching Aladdin and sing a whole new world

The creepy laughter sounds equally creepy (about the same) in the Japanese voice acted version.

The only reason I even rented this game to play it is to make fun of the stupid shit they put in these games XD But I do like the extremely morbid sense they have in almost every scene. One second it's; “Hey this is great we won!” a few seconds later it's: “Oh and Sin mutilated all of your children….yea….” But the one thing that I can't get out of my head is the main theme song they have with that flute! ARGH! IT DRIVES ME INSANE! DR. INSANO INSANE!

Agreed. XII is far better than 8, 10 and 13 (never played 11), Let's count the ways:

1)Vaan is annoying, but unlike Squall, Tidus etc. he shuts up and steps out of the plot's way once more interesting characters enter the story. Other bad characters, such as Ashe and Penelo, are also just bland rather than irritating.
(ok except Larsa- a challenger to Tidus' Throne of Fail) Even moggles jsut stick to running teleporters and leave you alone.
2) The villains actually have a damn good reason for what they're doing, and aren't interested in mass-destruction.
3) The game revolves around political intrigue and international diplomacy, giving the player credit for being able to
follow a plot more complicated than 'baddie blews up world for lulz'.
4) Balthier is the fucking man.
5) The battle system: even circle-strafing them is more involving than standing still and using a menu system. Status
effects are actually important. You can spot encounters from a distance and just avoid them. You can't rely on Esper
spam.
6) The big sidequest-mingame: Hunting is actually useful for leveling up, requires some thought in tracking down marks and doesn't interfere with the story or strain your suspension of disbelief.
7) Subverts a lot of RPG cliches: you're saving a continent rather than the entire world, you never fight the biggest baddies (the Occhuria [sp?]), monsters don't inexplicably carry money, your Master Sword and Materia-type-things are weapons of mass-destruction and an acknowledged danger to everyone, the weather changes, the Princess is a bad-ass with less-than-pure motives, etc.
8) They actually pulled off the old Evil Twin plot with fucking pathos.

Though I admit there a long parts of the game where absolutely fucking NOTHING happens. And that goddamn Tower dungeon. And Bunny-Girl Elves.

I'm rather curious of how the sport Blitzball managed to survive for 1000 years. You'd think that it would have gradually fallen out of style like most sports over that time gap and faded away.

Great analysis so far. Though I can admit to liking the game to a certain extent, I can't argue with any of your points. Tidus' laugh actually pissed me off and I got frustrated with the amount of times I had to save Yuna's sorry ass. But it's also just freakin' hilarious; I forced this on my friend who worships the game and he still laughed his ass off (after I made him see that calling Sin 'Godzilla' was probably born of sarcasm). Keep being awesome.

The Al Bhed Psyches kidnap Yuna and demand they through the game why? I mean the Aurochs have never won EVER, I mean why go to the effort?

my favorite part of the game is the summons because of there overdrive attacks, the one I liked the most is ifirits overdrive because of how much of an overkill it can be when you see what he does. he throws two fireballs at the enemy then he fires another huge fireball then he picks up a piece of the ground and throws it at the poor bastard who had to fight him, seeing it for the first time was a big holy shit moment for me.

He DOES have a point. How many sports from 1000 years ago are still going on today? Sure, there are ones like it, but they’ve all at LEAST changed. (But Soccer/Football has been around for a long time, if I remember, so I guess you could say Blitz is like their soccer.

I am enjoying this series immensely despite the fact that I think FFX is a good game. At the risk of getting flamed, I felt the need to point out one inaccuracy in Spoony’s review. He says that the prize you win for beating the Goers in the first Blitzball match is a worthless Strength Sphere, found off any number of monsters in the game. Not so, Spoony, you’re confusing the Strength Sphere for a Power Sphere. Power Spheres are found everywhere, and they fill in HP and Strength nodes. The Strength Sphere is actually quite rare, and it turns an empty node into a Strength +4 node. I can let exaggeration and hyperbole slip by, but not an outright inaccuracy.

Gawd, Amy Lee is soooo gorgeous. Even when somewhat overweight… I would do her in a heartbeat no matter what.

1. Aoron (sorry if I spelt that wrong, and do I need a reason of why he’s my favorite)
2. Yuna (a even kinder person than Rikku, and has pretty eyes!)
3. Rikku (she can be annoying, and her voice is unbearable, but she is a kind, loving girl)

Spoony’s reaction to Seymour’s hair was exactly like my reaction to Kuja’s outfit in FF9.  At least Kuja had decent character development.

Okay, seriously, even looking at the temple area for only a few seconds, I can already see such a massive possible design improvement: STREAMLINE IT!. When you put a sphere in the wall, don’t first ask whether you want to put a sphere in the wall. When the device activates, don’t pause the game to show it activating.

While I’m at it, some other possible improvements:
person-focused blitzball. Only control the character holding the ball at the moment, allowing for much control per character, like 3d movement. Have the rest of the characters work automatically, like in many soccer games.
Hats. To hide the hair.

-.- don’t know if its the web player or what but the audio sync during full screen SUCKS… wait actually i think its the video sync cause the audio is normal and then i pause it and the damn video gos for another 2 seconds…

I’ve chosen to believe it’s a light covering of downy hair over an unusual bone development.  Possibly a secondary sexual characteristic, but since I’ve seen no evidence of anyone else looking like that I have to wonder who it’s intended to attract.

The thing about Auron keeping his arm in his sleeve is a reference to the ronin sellsword protagonist of Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Yojimbo’ and ‘Sanjuro’ movies. H does exactly the same things as Auron – keeps his arm in his sleeve except in combat, carries a big jug of sake, etc. It’s a bit of Eastern visual characterization that fits in perfectly with the story and character but is often lost on Western audiences.

Spoony sings pretty good! A little off-tune but still pretty good. Dr. Insano’s take on it though is absolutely priceless! Oh and Tidus really does sound more like a girl than a guy, sorry to say.
