Now I'm waiting for a Deadliest Character between Spooni-wan and Sith Lord Joe

  • TitanCreed

Great video (Joe is awesome). I have a few follow up questions.

Personal quests aren’t shared, but are some class quests “recolors” of other class quests? For example, in WoW, the Alliance might tell you to go kill Onyxia because she wrecked Fordragon’s pad. For the Horde, they’ll tell you to go kill Onyxia because that bitch be trippin’. It’s the same quest, just with different text.

Can I complete the entire story on my own? Do I need to join larger raids to defeat the final bosses?

Old MMO / online games actually had single player settings. Why, with all the single player they’re pushing, not just have a single player mode? Seriously, it’s not hard to do and I wish developers still did this.

Do I see these cut scenes in the game? How do I encounter them? Are there Republic / Sith exclusive cutscenes?

Will Jedi have Emerald Justice (Light Side force lightning) like attacks be in the game?

Obviously none of these questions can be asked to anyone, so I’m just thinking out loud.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Ciccaroni/72002282 Andrew Ciccaroni

Joe was saying you guys were making guilds on each side (on the SWTOR site) if you do end up going through with that, Spoonywan can definitely count on me to be a trooper tank in the guild… Mostly because my friends are all gonna try FFXIV and I'll laugh at them. I mean FFXI was boring as an MMO can get, and FFXIV does not even have anything of note on its site other than a few of the weapons, I'm thinking TOR will be much better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DomonKasshu Allen Arroyo

I never really liked mmo's but I do like Bioware and Starwars. I am thinking of giving this a try, probably going sith joing joe, sorry spoony, hell yeah. but I am still thrown off by the difference in artstyle from the trailer and the actual game. The trailers have a realism to them while the game looks a bit more stylized and cartoony some what like the clone wars show. I don't necessarily hate it but I do enjoy the look shown in the trailers more, it's just grittier. The textures are little flat but maybe it's so it will work on lower end systems and can sell to a wider base. What ever sith class has force choke will be my main.

  • TheFizl

Ive been following this game closely for a long time now. I can answer of few of your questions.

Q:Can I complete the entire story on my own? Do I need to join larger raids to defeat the final bosses?

A:There are two types of quests in the game that we know of so far. Your Personal class specific quest and the world quests that are geared more toward groups. The class specific quests make up hundereds of hours of gameplay content that is fully soloable but can be gone through as a group as well. The personal class specific quests are totally different for each class never sharing a single bit of content. They are like completely different games following different plots with different characters and each haveing different objectives.

The world quests are geared more toward groups and raids ARE supposedly in the game so to answer your question some bosses will be soloable and some will require groups, it just depends on the content you are doing.

Q: Old MMO / online games actually had single player settings. Why, with all the single player they’re pushing, not just have a single player mode? Seriously, it’s not hard to do and I wish developers still did this.

A:Im not aware of an MMO that ever had a single player mode. EQ DAoC SWG etc ive played tons of them and im not aware of any that had a single player mode. But to further expand they arent pushing that the game is singleplayer they are trying to put emphasis on the fact that In addition to this being an MMO and having all the features you would expect in an MMO theres is also content that will allow you to play by yourself for those times that you dont feel like grouping or for whatever reason are unable to group.

Q: Do I see these cut scenes in the game? How do I encounter them? Are there Republic / Sith exclusive cutscenes?

A: Yes these “cutscenes” work exactly as they would in other Bioware games. You talk to someone and dialogue sequesnces occur, you set off an event and something will happen, etc etc.

Yes, Not only are the class specific quests different for each class the world quests are completely different for each faction, no content is shared between them.

Q: Will Jedi have Emerald Justice (Light Side force lightning) like attacks be in the game?

A: I doubt it, only because thats a lesser known force power that is rarely used in the lore and would blow the minds of the people who had never heard of it.

  • TotallyNotBob

I imagine this is going to disappoint a hell of a lot of people, though like most MMOs it will develop a small core following

Like Star Trek Online, I just do not see the Devs being able to capture a consistent “cinematic” quality in their story telling because they must constantly weigh compelling narrative against keeping the poor sods running on the grind trendmill.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Ciccaroni/72002282 Andrew Ciccaroni

You're thinking of the Sith Warrior there buddy.

  • http://twitter.com/Menamebephil Phil Matthews

I'll admit it freely- I'm a complete Bioware whore. Every time I talk about Bioware to my friends, I end up sounding like some kind of corporate shill.

And I also hate playing MMOs.

    And I love Star Wars.

And I am so very conflicted now.

And it sounds like this is going to try and cure all the things I hate about MMOs.

Aaaand I'm going to end up buying this now aren't I.

    I totally am.

  • TheFizl

Yknow i have to say Joe is a very good interviewer. I love how he weaseled a small answer out of him on crafting.

  • TheFizl

Star Trek online was a piss poor MMO because it was poor quality. In fact most triple AA titles are no where near the crap quality of STO even some of the worst of them. STO was developed for about 11 million dollars over only 2 years (avg MMO development time is 4 years). The Old republic is being developed for over 200 million dollars, its the most expensive video game ever made, and im not joking or exaggerating about that, and when it comes out will have been developed over 4 and a half years. The differences between these two titles is astronomical.

  • http://twitter.com/metallavery avery cawley

    I'll join you master.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Ciccaroni/72002282 Andrew Ciccaroni

Plus they have had some of the cut scenes already and they seem like every other BioWare game, interactive and to the point… Unlike some series *cough* Final Fantasy *cough*

  • kefkaesque

I was planning on rolling out as a smuggler first, and I'd be glad to join up against the forces of Angry Joe.

  • MFlorian

Jedi, all the way. Your powers are great, Angry Joe, but the Dark Side will consume you in the end.

  • jewbagel

Joe's got some great interviewing skills. This was awesome.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Gatlin-Tuttle/1504271291 Gatlin Tuttle

Spoony, I just have to ask:
Will you have a sith alt named Darth Insano?
    Because you should.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Treima Jimi Alexander

Yeah, Joe's actually surprisingly good at these interviews. I'm hyped for this game if I end up getting back into PC gaming.

  • goodguya

I was gonna join the Sith until I found out you're going Jedi. Spoony-wan is excellent. Good luck Angry Joe… You're gonna need it.

This just keeps clinching for me. I think I may actually get it. I like MMOs, I love Mass Effect, and a disconnected Star Wars universe is impossible not to appeal. All comes down to price…

  • QuetzaDrake

Obviously I'm going to have to side with the first reviewer I ever followed, Spoony-wan.

This seems kinda nifty, though, Bioware-type conversation choices within multiplayer. Will be interesting to see how that works out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DomonKasshu Allen Arroyo

I was pretty sure it was that class since I saw in G4 interview the class is based off the darth vader type

  • http://www.facebook.com/TornadoCreator Billy McKenna

There are two classes I know I'll want to play on SWTOR, obviously everyone plays as either a Jedi or a Sith and I'd probably want to try Sith if it wasn't for my second choice. So I'll be playing Jedi Consulor and Bounty Hunter (because anyone who doesn't want to be the next Bobba Fett burning people alive with a plasma flamethrower simply doesn't understand fun). Obviously I'll want to try both dark and light side, so I'll end up with a Jedi… as to which one becomes my main, we'll have to wait and see.

  • Valorin

For me, I kind of wanted to see how much it's going to cost a month in order to play this game. If it is anywhere near as awesome as the hype for it is, I would be happy to pay almost a 25 dollar a month fee because of just how much is in it. I never played WoW because I never thought that it was a good enough looking game with such a boring atmosphere that I couldn't warrant a 15 dollar subscription. If this game turns out to be this great, it'll be the first MMO I'll actually want to play. Good luck Bioware and thanks Joe for a great interview.

  • Caelan

Awesome! Been waiting for this one :D. I'm going for Smuggler first.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/TESYYVIEA46GM7J3FK7BIESLM4 Isaac Wehmanen

I have to say that I normally can't stand Angry Joe but this was one of the best interviews I've ever seen

  • excalibur01

That last scene where the developer just brushes off Joe's attack was funny as hell. The look that guy was giving, reacting to Joe was like “Man, this guy seems angry and crazy.” The look on his face just cracks me up

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Rigley/100001197603220 John Rigley

nice vid lol angry joe nice questions

  • Caelan

    Wish he'd asked about Beta.

  • Sexual_Tyrannosaurus

Hooray! chubby sith lords? sign me up!

  • Thingy

NO. Just… NO! We are NOT letting lucas touch this, we want to keep his hands off movies till he’s in the ground and rotting. Now, if we could give the old republic universe to an actor who actually knows what the hell he is doing, epicness would ensue.

  • saint23thomas

Your petty little Jedi-Sith battle means nothing to me. For I possess to power of SCIENCE.

  • Reaki

Remember one thing guys. There is something as beign too good to be true. As it is presented now, SWTOR seems like its just that. Bioware or no bioware, I dont believe it. Either the used mechanics will be flawed and work only in theory, not practice, or they are outright lying. I do admit, optimism isnt my thing, but beign skeptical works for me.

From time to time, there is a revolution. I hope for one.

  • Caelan

What mechanics are you talking about? As it stands they're using a lot of things that already exist (Most things from Mass Effect) and are just putting them into an MMO. It may not be perfect at the start but it'll get polished over time just like any other MMO.

  • ohnomoogle

If any game ever pulls me away from World of Warcraft, it'll be this. I'm a huge fan of Bioware games and the levels of want for this are astounding.

Joe delivers a really good interveiw – really good questions.

Together we shall free the galaxy of the sith menace.

a star wars: knights of the old republic MMORPG, dear god, i'm not much of an MMO gamer but i am buying this baby!

  • robek

this is made of “win” and spiced up with “awsome”. I want SWOR so badly now

  • Il Principe

As rudimentary as the Intro story is, its far superior to the onslaught of stupidity that is Episode I to III. How about a fan film about Star Wars featuring AngryJoe as Sith?

  • Logion

I think the developers had a really good time there, answering questions from gamers and not some boring press folk. You can almost tell that the developer there have a hard time not to laugh. Probably Joe too.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/3FW2UYYSXZEQPN5JNYKS2JC47Y Johnny

in all honesty I am saving up for a gaming computer just for this game because I can tell it is going to be badass. I just wish angry joe could get a relative release date out of him so I could figure a deadline.

  • http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

Wow, that was unexpected and really awesome.

Though, as far as battle lines go, sorry Spooni-wan, I may be totally behind you all the way as far as Babylon 5 but once a Sith, always a Sith. I think I'll be following Sith Lord Joe on this one.

Though judging from most of the comments I'm HUGELY out numbered at the moment so uh, yeah, *nervous laughter* XD

of course all of this is if I actually, you know, get to play this game

I'm excited to see the dialogue system, I know if was mentioned something similar in… crud, can't remember who's review but it looked really interesting to see it in action

should really get some SWTOR game play footage and make THAT into a movie…
oh wait, wasn't that Spoony's Wing Commander idea? :P

thanks for posting Joe's review, Spoony, 'twas awesome!

This gotta be the most awesome and interesting interview I have ever seen in my life, even I knew most of the stuff about the game.
    Joe – you're the best!

  • Reaki

I am just talking in general, having nothing specific on my mind. The thing is, SP and MMO are two different worlds, and what works in one fails terribly in the other.

To be honest I dont see a way to combine really strong story with several thousand people (EvE online has like 50k ppl online at the same time so lets take that as a maximum per server) trying to play it, while keeping the MMO content interesting and rewarding for extended periods of time. Remember, this aint SP, here, 50h of gametime is nothing. Hell, 500h is nothing. As I said, I am hoping for something more, but expect WoWesque experience with swapped background. Hey, at least I wont be disappointed ;p.

Also trying to balance out force users with the rest is understandable from the gameplay point of view, but complete BS every other way you look at it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alice.walters Alice Walters

Damn it. It's like Bioware wants me to never leave my house.

  • schromp

Spooni-wan, I'll follow you into the battlefield!

I am truly looking forward to once again spreading the good word of the Jedi and defending the galaxy from the Sith and redeeming a few along the way… Also I hope that like in KOTOR 2, there will be some funky saber colors, the silver one in particular, so that my blade can be a beacon of hope in a galaxy torn apart by war…Ok geeky stuff over, great interview Joe, I only wish that you asked him bout redemptions and falls, like if someone who plays a Sith can like choose to redeem himself or a Jedi that falls to the Dark Side, but I doubt he would answer you anyway…but c'mon that would be awesome!

One question I do still have anout it, what kind of payment method does it use? Will it be a monthly fee or will there be some cash shop, as the later one has recently seemed to become more common in MMORPGs.

Hell yeah, that's what i call an interview ! The game already looked good, but the more you talk about it, the more i want to play it ^^
Concerning the side, i'm not afraid of little lightnings so i immidiatly chose the jedi ! They even provide shiney armors !

    Ok, let's see here…
3 Darkside run-throughs in KOTOR and 1 Lightside. 4 DS run-throughs in KOTOR 2 and zero LS. Sorry, Spoony-Wan, but the numbers speak for themselves.

BTW, those two booth-Jedi were awesome for playing along. That was really a cool idea, Darth Joe!

I love the face Ohlen makes when Joe hears “That's something I can't talk about right now,” and his face starts to spaz out. Good interview. This will probably be the first MMORPG that I really get into, from the looks of it.

  • ash6774

Same here, I really really want to play this game.

I'm with Spoony as well, maybe I'll be a Republic Trooper.

  • laughingwarlock

Honestly? I'm not a fan of Joes videos. But I he's at the top of the world when he's interacting with other people and doing interviews like this. That's what his personality plays to and I hope he does them more often.
    This video was fantastic.

  • the_knez

Hehehe, Joe used some awesome mind tricks when pulling all that info out of the developers.

  • Annorak

“Because, you know, as Angry Joe, I am imbued with the power of Force Lightning.”

The interviewee's face there is just “…as you would be”.

I'm quite looking forward to this game, I'm definitely playing as an Imperial Agent. Whilst the Light/Dark Jedi conflict has always interested me, I'm always quite intrigued by how the non-Force related members of the galaxy can have a hand in the outcome of things. Of course, I'll probably be making a Republic alt as well, seeing as my friend is a pansy and wants to support the Jedi.

  • http://twitter.com/libraryguy09 Evan Tarlton

Civil War: I'm with Captain America– I mean, Spooni-wan. I mean, Angry Joe– I mean, Darth Joe might have the Dark Side of the Force, but Spooni-wan has the Light Side of the Force and the SPOONING Side of the Force. As we all know, Darth Joe cannot withstand the power of the Spooning Side.

What I really want to know is if there will be other playable races other than human. I think I saw a Twi'Lek Bounty Hunter in the first cinematic trailer but I could be wrong on that. Anyway, if we can play as non-human races I'll be sold.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mattias-Granlund/100000618693819 Mattias Granlund

earlier screenshots have hinted on multiple playable races, and in fact I would eat a hat if they didn´t

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mattias-Granlund/100000618693819 Mattias Granlund

so far as we know it´s gonna be the tried and true monthly fee, just hope they choose to offer those pre pay cards like some MMO do

  • StealthKnight

The story thing does not seem like something new unless they are serious about the classes being separate stories. I'm sure class quests, quests between classes, and the big story quests have been done before but not deep like the developers are trying to imply. The ships seem rather huge for one person and their party. They look bigger then the millennium falcon.

  • http://zelriku.deviantart.com/ Sangii

Joe's like, harassing him. xD I can only imagine what this guy thought of him.

  • XploreInsanity

It's a tough choice, I'm leading more to sith but I'm really a good guy and slaughtering people would make me carry a guilty conscience. Is there a way to start as a sith and be redeemed early on? If not I think I would follow the ways of the Jedi with Master Spoony-wan. However I will not follow all of their teachings; like controlling your feelings and that you aren't allowed love, I will do what I feel is best.

Precisely. There’s already been a Star Wars MMO out there, but it was placed in the not-so-gifted hands of Sony Online Entertainment. I think we can all agree on what an EPIC FAIL that was, right?

Now, take a batch of BioWare, add some LucasArts filling, and a dash of MMO with a teaspoon of RPG and I think we have the blue ribbon at the county fair, folks! This is going to be SO epic. xD

And… come Spring 2011, I will retire into my cave and most people will not see me again for a long time to come. :)
