I don’t know why anyone freaks out the moment someone posts a criticism around here, even a constructive one. Instead they just plug their ears and yell “DON’T LISTEN TO THE HATERS” instead of realizing that those with criticisms are actually being helpful. And on the subject of music, not everyone is going to have the same tastes, obviously. But there are some things that are just musically bad. Not because of taste, but because there are actually some ways in which music should be done when working in certain styles. SadPanda ignores all the guidelines (whether by choice or ignorance, I don’t know).

The effort shows, of course. And it’s a nice gesture, certainly. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s awful. SadPanda absolutely CANNOT sing. He’s consistently off-key and it makes me want to stick a fork in my ears. Not to mention that the actual music he writes is atrocious and predictable. I know this and the songs for Phelous and The Cinema Snob are tributes and are also supposed to be “funny” at the same time, but that doesn’t entirely excuse the fact that the music he always writes just sounds bad. The melodies are grating and annoying, musically the transitions don’t make any sense and keeps the song from flowing well at all, the chord progressions are the same tired old ones from thousands of other songs, and the entire structure of the song is just harmonically awful.

The best way to sum it up is that all of his songs sounds like the songs a group of friends would write after having learned to play an instrument for 6 months and decided to start a band.

Giving up singing duties would go a long way towards making the music better, however, as the off-key singing is by far the largest problem. SadPanda just doesn’t have an ear for it, or honestly, an ear for music for that matter.

Though I’m sure people will just stick their fingers in their ears and shout “HATERS BE HATIN THIS SONG IS GOOD”, which is really about the only way anyone could say SadPanda’s songs are good, or even songs.

There are no ways in which music “should” be done. To say that is a -ridiculous- assumption. Music, like so much else, is all a matter of opinion. For every piece of music that exists, there is someone that likes it, and someone that hates it.

Trying to judge it on just a straight “wow that’s bad” is just plain ignorant. It’s ironic, though, that you say “those with criticisms are actually being helpful”, and then say “it makes me want to stick a fork in my ears”. You know, just because you point out that people will react a certain way to you, that doesn’t make their reactions any less valid, it’s just you trying to pre-construct a defense against the criticisms you’ll receive for what you’re about to say.

It was a nice try, but I don’t even think people on the internet will be fooled by such an attempt. Though I especially liked how you tried to throw in “music terms” to make it sound like you really knew what you were talking about, was a pretty nice touch.

I wholeheartedly agree man. I was never really partial to this guy no matter how hard he tries. I like the gesture, I really do, but I am unable to finish off the song. It’s dull and off key and coming from a sucky clarinet player, that says a lot.

Sadpanda, you’re a great guy for trying to do tributes to the Channel Awesome people and for taking time out of your day to do such. I don’t think you’re that good though.

Musical jargon aside, haloofthesun makes a pretty damn good point. Fanboyism dictates that anyone who doesn’t love this video will be written off as a hater (and therefore wrong) no matter what their argument behind disliking it is. And he’s obviously right, as evidenced by your reply. Your reply is basically an eloquent version of “LALALALA I’m not listening to you! Because you’re an asshole! And assholes are WRONG!!!!!!” You spend the entire post arguing why he’s ill-equipped to make the judgements he does, and why people won’t be “fooled” by his attempt, but no time at all detailing the supposed good points of the actual video. Because debate isn’t important, right? HATERS BE HATIN’, and you’ve got to show them it’s not okay to dislike something with Spoony’s name on it!

I just wanted to ask you how many times have you heard a terrible song and decided not to say “wow that’s bad” just because it’s “plain ignorant”. That’s having an opinion, I never licked poo but I’m pretty sure it tastes bad, does that make me an ignorant for not even trying?

As for the video and song:
Video really good. No need to point out why just watch it, obviously a lot of editing and searching went into doing it.

Song not so much. I like the fact that SadPanda works in his free time to create tributes to Channel Awesome but his gimmick of being “so bad it’s good” wore out pretty fast for me.
And while it works well with Phelous (and I think it works only with him) – since he reviews movies that try to fall into the same “so bad it’s good” category and fail miserably – that doesn’t mean it has to work with everyone. I’m honestly kinda tired of hearing SadPanda just being impossible to listen too. Maybe if he actually tried one time (hell for all I know he might be TRYING right now) to crate an interesting song without overused riffs and with good singing (maybe if he sang it in French, since English doesn’t seem to serve him well) than I would actually not fight with myself to NOT press the pause button.

Nice video all in all, even if I think that the Cinema Snob tribute was better, both the song and the video itself. For instance, the intro was way to depressing, and made it seems as if something bad happened to the Spoony One and the sudden stop around 1m40 then around 2m30 was just weird. I do think that SadPanda should sing in french, it would probably sound better. There’s also that this kind of song is just not my style, but ultimately, that was very cool of SadPanda and Welshy. By the way, I can understand people not liking the song at all, but if you think that it’s so awful and you can’t understand why people can like it, you must not listen to the radio very often, or it’s way better where you are than here!

First and foremost, the second half is pretty good and the ‘can’t sing higher’ joke made me laugh :) but
while I KNOW that being french makes it that much harder singing in english without making everybody wince in pain, toi t’arrive pas trop a t’en sortir, your singing is painful mon ami :)
One advice, lose the cheap echo effect, that would be awesome. And don’t rhyme ‘bad’ with ‘bad’, that’s just lazy songwriting.
