Hmm this could be pretty good, I loved the original trilogy.
Bout time it went back to being just a brutal 2d fighter in my opinion.

  • Anonymous

Agreed. Done right in the spirit of the first three, I’m in!

  • Renaissance_nerd

hmmmm this may be the first Mk i’ve bought in… 10 years

  • http://twitter.com/CedarMusketeer Bryan Gardner

Now that Mortal Kombat has a New home at Warner Brother Games, this should get interesting. It seems they took a page from CAPCOM’s book when it comes to the Cinematic nature of the X-ray Moves and the like, very much like SF4 in Nature with the close-ups. This is a very needed step back for the MK series, away from the Tekken stile 3D arena and back to the good old fashion 2D carnage we enjoyed at the beginning.

Now in the Interview they said an April release, but Spoony said March 1st. Did you get a more solid date out of them after the interview was over Spoony?

  • Anonymous

Why do you always yell when you interview people?

The guys your talking to never yell and we can hear them perfectly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jacob-W-Rampey/1003608675 Jacob W. Rampey

What?! They booed?! I hope it was for the reason that their favorite fighter had his eyes gouged.

  • http://twitter.com/CedarMusketeer Bryan Gardner

I think he yells to be heard over the general din of the crown at large. Whenever I go to a convention I usually find it hard to hold a normal conversation without raising my voice to be heard over the dull roar of a few thousand people all talking at once.

Mortal Kombat is the game I’m most looking foreword to. And I don’t think its odd that you like the story most of all cuz its the same w/ me.

Oooo. A commercial that wasn’t Halo Reach! Now if only it wasn’t Metro POS… Thats gonna come back to haunt them.

Mortal Kombat thats 1-3 again? YES. THANK YOU YES. I freaking did not like ANY of the mortal kombats past those. The opening video part would have been cooler if we could see more going on instead of just the shadows…

I’m actually interested in this Mortal Kombat game. Lets see what shit goes down.

  • http://twitter.com/Gabriel_Fonseca Gabriel Fonseca

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m felling like the 90′s are coming back.
I mean, some of the coolest game franchises from back then, like MK and Duke Nuken, are getting new games that are looking awesome! :D

  • Renaissance_nerd

i know it sure feels that way, Duke Nukem, Mortal Kombat, hell even back to the future. 2011 looks bright indeed for gaming.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Martin-Shaw/542510997 Martin Shaw

I get what you mean. @ Gabriel Fonseca

Its good to see Street Fighter and MK return to what really made them great games. I always thought of the two fighting games as different sides to the same coins.

I cant wait to get ahold of this game next year and just let rip, and most likely get my ass kicked ALOT.

See you all on Xbox Live 2011!!

  • http://twitter.com/LaserLambert Jerry Lambert

I like the X-Ray moves, MK was never really real about it’s violence, you can’t lose that much blood from a single punch to the face, and still fight, since way back in the oldschool games. plus it’s a totally westernized concept of the Super Moves in every way, it’s great. I’ve been following this game for a while now and it just makes me smile everytime they show something new.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Blayney/683346875 Michael Blayney

I’m really looking forward to this. It kinda looks like a fun, casual fighter for when I don’t feel like having my ass handed to me in Virtua Fighter 5.

Mortal Kombat has always been my favorite fighting series specifically for the story. While I appreciate the mechanics of games like Soul Caliber, I find their stories and characters as just bland and wholly uninteresting, whereas Mortal Kombat has always kept me enthralled with it’s interesting character storylines and backgrounds.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Andres-ZombieMan-Guzman/100001028660386 Andres ZombieMan Guzman

They booed ???? Wow people are that stupid??? They expect that kind of realism in a game??? How about Soul Calibur??? They should die with one hit right? ?

Sorry that the game with the character that fires Ice and the other with four arms doesn’t make any sense. . . damn people

  • http://twitter.com/thisgamesux THiSGaMeSuX

Mortal Kombat was my Childhood, but fighting games are notorious for never evolving and making it feel like you wasted money, not saying i have any better ideas, its a fighting game after all but at least i hope they tried.

So… going back to Mortal Kombat 1(2 and 3) to fix everything that went wrong…

    How… Wonderfully symbolic!

Many people have forgotten that realism can be sacrificed for the sake of fun.

For exemple, you like Grand Theft Auto? Go play a bit of Saint’s Row 2. The plot’s cheap, the game’s a ripoff, the graphics aren’t all that nice…

But damn is it good mindless fun. Like copulating jellybeans (/quote Yahtzee)

I for one wouldn’t have really cared about the inconsistency of people in Mortal Kombat not dying over such attacks… I mean, seriously, they’ve been through fatalities after fatalities, yet survived to enter another Mortal Kombat. Any sense? No, really a problem? Not really.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Gilfillan/1681085004 Daniel Gilfillan

    Raidens message to the past:

Don’t try to be like Soul Calibur, you’ll suck at it.

Looking forward to this game, and for the people booing the excess gore because it “should have killed them”, do everyone a favor and direct them to a game more suited to their intelligence level, like Deadliest Warrior.

I dont know that I can play fighting games anymore, its been seriously years since I played one (Last one I played seriously was MK deception) but I am actually stoked for this. If nothing else I hope it finds its place in the competitive market as well as a large enough appeal for more casuals (like me) that love what MK used to be.

Also, no spoony I actually agree with you. I really enjoyed the absurd MK stories too =P

  • http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

yes! :-D … though need to find someone’s PS3 or Xbox to borrow for this ;)

the story modes were always fun for Mortal Kombat, I agree with it being interesting if bizarre. I actually read a novel of the main story in high school that was actually pretty close to what the game play story is and was funny but not from sucking. Maybe it’s just the years of hiding my copy of Mortal Kombat 2 from my step mom but this looks cool and I’m excited about it

This series needs to die. It needs to die now.

WHY DO WE ACCEPT THIS DRIVEL?! My GOD, this is just inane…

  • http://thenewyawker.darkbb.com/ Tylarannosaurus Rex

I’m more excited for this that I should be. Especially since I only own a Wii.

2D is the best thing they could have done.

    I have to do this…

    …ahem…

Don’t feel bad Spoony, the mythology of Mortal Kombat is what separates it from dumb shit like Deadliest Warrior. In fact, one of the reasons I always favored Sub-Zero over Liu Kang is because his story and his mythos were always much more interesting than Liu Kang.

He’s part of a warrior clan who were actually the forerunners of the ninja (the Lin Kuei).
He lives in the shadow of his older brother.
He is constantly mistaken for his older brother and has to clean up his messes so to speak.
He has to search for a way to release his brothers soul from a curse.
His arch nemesis is a former Elder God (Shinnok).
and he’s got fuckin’ ice powers!

All the characters have long convoluted histories and character developments, that’s what makes them more than just dumbass killers. Ask Phelous, he’ll probably tell you the same thing!

  • http://twitter.com/Gelbfieber Chris Kohler

Well, i’m nitpicking and i assume Spoony was aware of that when he said it, but the “Super Nintendo” statement is not quite correct. There was MK 3 for the Playstation 1, which still was a pretty classical and typical 2d Mortal Kombat game, even though fans were missing many of the old characters from the first 2 games.
Also i would say that despite being a 3d fighting game, Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat Gold (the Dreamcast version of MK 4) still felt pretty much like a real MK game.
And wasn’t there a 2d Mortal Kombat game even after 4/Gold in which you could play pretty much every character from all the previous games, including the bosses like Goro and that centaur-guy from part 3? Or am i confusing that with that MK game for the N64?
In any case, there have been good old fashioned 2d MK games after the Super Nintendo, besides the fact that the SNES version was censored and thus most fans rather remember the Sega Genesis version.

This is a step back; a step in the wrong direction. It may make enough money to justify a sequel and people may like it but it shouldn’t be a side-scroller. Fighting games have evolved beyond this point. Combat in games like Tekken and Soul Calibur is more complex now then spamming fireballs and flying uppercuts. Hell, Deadly Alliance was more than that. There’s no reason for this to be a side-scroller! They’re relying on an old-school play style gimmick to carry the series. This may be the death of a beloved franchise. I hope it’s the death of 2D fighting at any rate.

Now this is some good news.

    the real good points:

Fast paced action (the last MK games looked too slow)

Fully 2D gameplay (this game should never touch 3D, just like Sonic)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joe-Ottoson/100000693361189 Joe Ottoson

2d styles games have their place. They dynamics in them are significantly different from 3d fighters. Variety is a good thing here. Especially when MK has never done 3d well at all.

Is anyone really surprised by this? When they announced it back in E3, I knew it was because of the success of Street Fighter 4. They are taking ST4′s idea and running with it for MK, Specials and all. That said however, I think it’s a GREAT Idea, with MK failing hard in most of it’s 3d prospective games, going back to 2d is a wise choice that will actually make the game fun again and really that’s what it’s all about in a fighting game, although I would like to see placement ladders or a league mode in multi-player to balance out the population instead of a mediocre online mode, since they did say it was a copy over. All in all it looks good and at least gonna get a rental from me.

  • Anonymous

They booed the X-ray moves? It’s a fight between a humanoid lizard and a snow ninja. Realism should’ve died at the character select screen.

  • Anonymous

I’d go as far as to say the entire industry could do well by going back to their roots and doing games that bring elements of the “good old days” into modern gaming. Sure it’d be simple and not all that new overall, but thing is, people enjoyed the old games for a reason, and modernizing the classics would be, I think, a great boon for gaming everywhere.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mattias-Granlund/100000618693819 Mattias Granlund

2d style and 3d style fighting has there place

3d is often more tactical and rewards tactics but slow since people spend time rolling left, right back and forth as they do fight

2d is perfect for fast paced, balls to the walls fighters and Mortal Kombat is the latter plain and simple

  • http://www.facebook.com/mitchell.trueman Mitchell Trueman

funny story a bit off topic though when me and a friend of mine watched a video where Ed Boon said that Mortal Kombat vs DC would be rated Teen killed all enthusiasm we had for that game, after that when ever we saw something that killed any anticipation for a movie or game from then on we would yell “you just Ed Booned it”

  • http://www.facebook.com/Novak83 Ed Novak

Ditto. I think it’s because it’s really just Enter the Dragon but with aliens and gods and four-armed giants and the end of the world and stuff.

Plus you’ve got about a thousand poisonous things trying to kill you daily…..I’m bad enough just with standard bees never mind some of the nasty stuff in Oz. I suppose the weather makes up for it though.

  • http://twitter.com/random_ninja5 Eric Hesselberg

Your soul is mine! I am actually excited about this. I actually haven’t liked Mortal Kombat since they went to 3D graphics. While I played MK v DC (mainly cause I had to play as Batman kicking some Netherrealm butt), I have always hated the 3D motion in the ring and being able to move left and right as well as forward and back. It bogs down the action. I’ll be trying to jump and wind up moving. The animation was slow as well (really slow). 2D fighting is more frenetic and exciting, with the attacks coming at lightning speed, whereas in 3D fighters you spend half the match dancing around each other. I think this is the best move MK could have done is to go back to the basics. Sub-Zero Wins! Flawless Victory!

  • Anonymous

3D fighters in general are amazing, but this retro approach is definitely what the series needed after all the heat it’s taken.

I don’t see why the x-ray moves should kill a guy in one shot, this is Mortal Kombat… where to actually power up your super gauge you’re expected to stab the other guy with an ice pick repeatedly and turn them to ice (with the intent of smashing them after). The x-ray moves are meant to be brutal but not as bad as the finishers themselves (where fighters end up in pieces or turned to ash generally), and the characters are all superhuman don’t forget.

I actually think it’s kinda sad how 3D Mortal Kombat games have such a bad rep despite always innovating and still being decent. The ideas like every character having multiple fighting styles you could switch back and forth between and weapons that could be used and sheathed again really added to the depth (choice equals depth in fighters). Something tells me they aren’t going for depth this time… they’re hoping they can get away with it like Street Fighter 4 which they probably can.

I actually agree what you’re saying with the story, the majority of fighting games stories are complete crap, the story in Street Fighter 4 leaves a bad taste in my mouth right now to the point where I question why they bothered, Mortal Kombat is different, it has a whole entire other realm (if not more) to go off on, multiple races and a ton of interesting characters. The actual reason for the tournament (that being for earth’s heroes to fight the outworld champions to stop the invasion) is awesome and surprisingly well thought out.

People are questioning an X-ray move not killing a person in a universe where everybody seems to have at least seven skulls, twelve spines, and sixteen spleens when they explode from being ripped apart by the Hulk with four arms. Also not going to mention anything about a guy being completely frozen (I was frozen today!) but surviving, bleeding gallons of blood without dying, and surviving electrocution by Lord-fucking-Raiden.

I’ll admit I’ve never played any Mortal Kombat past the original Trilogy, but that’s my point: if we’re ‘returning’ to the beginning, then why are people questioning it or booing it when the beginning’s fighting logic doesn’t make sense to begin with? Now if something like that happened in say Tekken or Street Fighter, yeah I’d have some kind of a problem with it, but not Mortal Kombat.

Now just shut up and finish him while I finish her.

i cant wait for this game but i have to ask. y the booing when the eyes were jabbed?

seriously think about it, if that had been fight over, there would be major complaints as the fighting would be unbalanced, just like another wee game mentioned recently by spoony called Deadliest Warrior.

also if they are booing because its unrealistic then i have to laugh like crazy. y? because its MORTAL KOMBAT it never has been realistic, its not supposed to be. its a fantasy world that kicks ass (stories are awesome lol). i feel its like someone booing at street fighter because a sonic boom or a hadokan didnt kill the other character lol. but in all seriousness i cant wait for this game, even though i personally don’t play a lot of fighting games cos i suck at them lol, but mortal kombat is close to my heart and its great to see it in good hands.

TBH I don’t care if it’s nore REAL, like severe injuries do not kill them, I mean FUCK THAT. As long as it’s fun and awesome gory old school MK I’ll love it.

But it’s funny that it took Capcom making SF IV for these guys to finally notice that these games should stay true to their roots and not go the way of tekken, etc, etc… I mean, these guys and even capcom did at some point, thought that to go 3D you’d have to be like the first 3D fighters out there. WRONG! And it took them YEARS to understand this…

  • http://twitter.com/DaveThePsycho Psycho.Psycho

I tend to disagree a bit (note: just A BIT) with what Spoony said about the fighting system not being rewarding. Sure, MK 4 and beyond were pretty bad from what I recall, but I actually went back to MK 1 a few months ago to give it another try and it reminded me what about it made me so mad but at the same time kept bringing me back to the game: the fighting system. Just two, maybe three special moves per character and strikes with such a long wind up and recovery time that you had to be precise. Timing was key in that game. While it felt clumsy and stiff most of the time, it was oh so sweet when you could properly counter or string combos together.
So, to me that was rewarding, even if it was for the wrong reasons.

I’m sure the system now is a lot more dynamic, like it should be with the way games have evolved, and I’m looking forward to it.

I still love MK 1, but I can’t wait to see this new game.

Never was a fan of fighting games. It looks good though. I just don’t see how the gore was so important. Isn’t prioritizing looks over gameplay the one thing everyone complains about?

  • Anonymous

I don’t really see the problem with them surviving after these obscenely painful, gut-ripping attacks. This is something that all the fighters have. Look at some of the the Street Fighter Vs. Whoever or basically any 2D fighter games. People get blasted with space lasers, ravaged my animals, hammered by Kameyameyahs, and crushed by tanks and they get up to finish the fight. This is the same concept, it just has a much more visceral feel to it. Even beyond that.. this is Mortal Kombat.. when has realism or plausibility any had a place in that universe.

Wow, it seems like everyone has decided they want to go “back to basics”. Or maybe that’s just the popular line these days.

  • Anonymous

Yeah that’s the one silly thing is how the ultimate moves look like Fatalities in themselves but the fight keeps going like nothing happened. I think they will have to do something about that. Make them into the new Brutalities or something. Maybe with a really slow super meter that builds up over multiple rounds. So if you never spent your meter you could end the second or third round instantly with one of those.

I also always loved the Story Mode. My favorite mission of all time has to be the one where you have to find the chick’s dog and the dog was chopped up by the butcher down the street.

  • Anonymous

I don’t understand why anyone would have a problem with someone surviving what would normally be an instantly fatal attack in the Mortal Kombat universe. It’s completely commonplace in the other games, just not in so much visible detail.

Besides, I’m willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of fucking awesome in a Mortal Kombat game.

Now hold on a minute sir. I am a Disturbed fan, but yes that song sucks. I don’t know why exactly David is going in this whole Captain Planet direction but it’s not working for him. What is infuriating is that Just Another Way To Die sucks so hard and yet it’s all over the radio especially when there are better songs on Asylum. The Animal is actually really good and their taking a page from Metallica’s book and doing an awesome werewolf song. But instead they chose to make this horrible “RECYCLE MOTHER FUCKER OR THE OIL COMPANIES ARE GOING TO TURN THE WORLD INTO THE POST APOCALYPTIC WORLD OF DISTURBED!!!!!! STUPIFIED!!!!!” song the one single that every body hears on the radio ensuring that no one will want to buy there CD. I have never seen them fuck up an album so badly before.

It’s awesome they went back to their roots I like the idea of the 2D gameplay with 3D graphics and I’m happy as fuck that the brutality of the blood and gore is back! I did however like Mortal Kombat VS DC even though it was rated T but I heard that was DC’s fault originally the makers of Mortal Kombat did wanna give that an M rating but DC bitched, bastards I would of loved to behead Superman cuz I fucking hate Superman anyway none the less it was still fun and I own it and enjoy playing it my only complaint is its kinda quick to beat both the Mortal Kombat story mode and the DC storymode anyway I’ll DEFINITELY be picking this one up March, 1, 2011

    Hell,
I might be alone on this.
I’d like them to take it all back to mk1 stylewise. Perhaps do something interesting with digitization with todays graphics capabilities. With all the compositing and tracking tools for footage these days, you can do quite a bit. Perhaps stylize to look like its has some sorta VHS quality.

Awesome! I cant wait for MK. And Im with Spoony on the Story. I love the MK stories. The Story was the only reason I played MK vs DC.

Never was very good, but this still sounds like an interesting game.
Dear Spoony, when is Eternal Darkness 2 going to get made?

I’m not siding with the boo-ers. Last time I checked people don’t normally survive a lot of the crap that we’ve seen during fights in MK games since the beginning.

I know, right? Generally being frozen solid or having your lungs perforated by a flying harpoon (generally multiple times) tends to be a fatal event, and people are complaining about x-ray moves being unrealistic?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Edward-Graham-Peeler-Jr/1602215514 Edward Graham Peeler Jr.

Well, it is unrealistic when Sub Zero can get his spleen ripped out multiple times. I think someone has to call bullshit on that. I’m willing to give this game a shot but it really does look like you can fatality a guy in mid fight and he keeps fighting and that is stupid. It kindof makes sense for characters like Scorpion, Reptile, and Goro who possess super human stamina but it doesn’t for Sonya, Kano, and Lui Kang among others who do not.

        • Anonymous

My point is just about every special move in the game is unrealistically fatal. If Scorpion stabs you in the chest with a barbed spear, yanks you towards him with it hard enough to rip it out, and then uppercuts you hard enough to send you 15 feet into the air, you’re not getting up again. Period.

personally i loved Armageddon. some things about the 3-D gameplay made it fun, especially when you knocked your enemy off platforms. but i see this game being very good, and im excited to try it.

I’m shocked that people are calling bullshit on the X-ray moves. If you want realism in your mortal kombat maybe this is what you should play.

Aw, I thought you were going to show Bushido Blade.

Before I watch any further: I know that’s Disturbed playing the trailer. Is it from Asylum? Sounds kickass anyway.

Yes and no. PS3 owners wouldn’t have a problems, but the 360 is region-locked. Australia is Region 4 for DVDs (and games, as I understand it), while US and UK are Regions 1 and 2 respectively.

Ordering from New Zealand is usually the best option: hardly anything gets banned there and it’s the same region.

I tried the game at GamesCom and it was amazing! It was like playing MK2-3 but with fluent action and way more gore and violence! :D

And, by the way, I have that MK t-shirt with the broken ribcage! It was luckily into Warner Brothers Press Kit!

I believe there’s one thing that the development team keeps missing: The visuals. To be more precise, the visual of the characters themselves. You see, when MK1 was released it was shocking not only because of the violence. It was shocking because they were actors dressed up for each of the sprites used for the game, as opposed to the cartoony visuals of, let`s say, street fighter. That made the absurd violence of the game even more awesome, for the time, it was like pit fighter with tons of gore. Not that I say they should get back to any dreadfull fmv roots, but they should let go this deformed cartoon-like proportions they`ve been using and try to make, let`s say, subzero kinda resemble a ninja.

And then chop his head off.

Did they REALLY have to have a godawful Disturbed song in the trailer?

    Looks pretty, and pretty meh.

I hope it doesn’t end up like Mortal Kombat versus DC. Lots of initial buzz, then meh when compared to its competitors.

I can’t wait until it comes out. I am also glad that they are going back to the old format as opposed to the ‘DV VS MK’ too. DC VS MK wasn’t nesessarly bad forsay. I totally understood what Ed Boon was shooting for when he was at the Comic Con in 2008 when he was making the game by saying ‘That we’re catering towards the comic book fans as well as MK fans by haveing the violence of MK and at the same time have the comic book feel of DC. It’s just the reason why we don’t have the fatalities in the game is because we’re afraid to alienate the comic book fans of people who like superman as an exmaple because we think it would be out of place if Superman would like eye beam a persons head off so that is why we wanted to try to stay true to both the MK and DC fans.” I agreed with wha Boon said at the presentation which made the game what it was. It’s hard for me to judge it to be ‘A bad game’. However what got me at the presentation was Boon said there will be DLC for MK VS DC but I have yet to see it out….and Ed Boon didn’t know who Doomsday was. He got O.M.G.d really bad and said “ok ok, maybe we’ll have frickin Doomsday in the game.” Lol.

The problem is quite simple. Without fatalities there is no way you can claim you are being true to MK fans.

    finally…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Edward-Graham-Peeler-Jr/1602215514 Edward Graham Peeler Jr.

Ok, so basically this game is a remake of MK1 and in order to go back to basics and keep the game story from getting too complicated they’ve decided to have Future Raiden send some bullshit telepathic message back through time to his past self which will invariably create a whole new fucked up time line so we’ll all get confused years from now like with Legend of Zelda.

Ok, here’s an idea guys. You want to get “back to basics”? Why don’t you just release game that takes place after all the recent bullshit, but you just don’t acknowledge the recent crap. Just have a game where it’s in Outworld and it’s the all the characters we love like Scorpion and Sub Zero and Raiden and none of the crap characters like Hotaru and Shujinko and Jarek and Taven and all those others 4,000 characters they made that no one gives a shit about. They’re all dead. All the garabage characterss are dead. They died in Armageddon. Or Darkseid killed them. Who cares. And the story of the game is this: It’s just our favorite Mortal Kombat characters in Outworld beating the hell out of each other. That’s it! You know I love the story of Mortal Kombat too but it’s never exactly been Citizen Kane guys. I don’t need a reason for Scorpion and Sub Zero to want to kill each other. I just want want to see them beat the shit out of each other!! That’s it!!! That’s all they have to do! It would be the greatest game of all time!!

    Problem solved!
