Never played an MMO but hopefully a game out of this group can finally draw me in.Great work Spoony.

I’ve never played one either. Something about paying for a game over and over again every month…

That’s why GW2 actually interests me. One payment, and free play.

End of Nations also looks pretty interesting.

I’ve always liked the concept of GW/GW2.. but.. I really worry about security on that type of game.

lets see here what 4-5 games Spoony didn’t rant about and seemed genuinely excited about.

this just shut up every screaming whining FFXIV fanboy in one video. but im sure they will find some way to exclaim that Spoony still hates everything.

    • Anonymous

To be honest his very tone seems a tad contradictive. He seems to hold no gripes over Eve telling them that tough shit if the game is tough and not noob friendly with a high learning curve however XIV is in no way as complex yet his tone was rather harsh and held moreso of a grudge over SE rather then giving an actual judgmental argument.

While all the following companies seem to have given the time of day he was unable to do the same with SE so rather take the initiative and do some research on his own, which he did do for Eve to learn about the FPS game in the same world, he decided to take the low route and just insult them in a rage of being unable to get an audience with them.

Out of all the MMOs he looked over I believe SE is the only one that is lost in translation from another nation you know they tend to do things differently and they can’t always just give anyone an interview.

It’s just a shout out to spoony since it’s just his overview on XIV is downright a raging grudge he’s holding against them since the latest FF series titles that he’ll always think the worst of the next installment or find something to nitpick about it.

Best example is the music composition at the start which was composed by Nobuo Uematsu he downright insults and blams it for being full of itself when the ideal is to setup a tempo of peace and tranquility before the conflict occurs. If you didn’t like that song then I guess you also didn’t enjoy the Opera Scene in FF6 which had the same sort of creation behind it, a story that starts out peaceful then slowly turns into a conflict of tragedy.

What fun is having a conflict if there is no peace behind it or a time of tranquility. That’s what good storytelling should have, sure you want to be thrown into the action but what’s so wrong about starting small and working your way up. I think if he just took the time to look over all the MMO content he talked about he would realize that his comments were moreso a grudge and feeling of being insulted for not being able to get an interview with one of the FF creators rather then the actual game itself.

As I do plan on getting the CE edition myself I’d gladly offer you with a 30 day free pass for you to see what you may be missing out on with your rage over the series. There’s a lot of things you may be missing out on with the series heck for an actual intriguing story the XI and it’s expansion offer a wide range of compelling and intriguing storylines where it’s only downfall is how much they went out of their way to stretch out the content for the last expansion that came out. They did however redeem themselves slightly for creating this unique add on called “Abyssea’ there’s just so much to it that it’s hard to explain but it’s a very compelling and interesting game concept that offer a variety of rewards to empower your player inside the area, loot from a multitude of monsters, beast to xp on where lots of shit can be gained and much more.

The reason I bring up Abyssea is because all the raging from XIV makes it sound like a game that’s been out for a few years. If you’ve looked at the evolution of XI you would realize that the future of XIV looks to be a bright one and could end up having things that everyone can enjoys as well as a multitude of class concepts from what is given to us.

So I’ll say it again, if you want a real look at what XIV has to offer I”ll gladly offer you the CE buddy pass I get if you respond to this.

With that out of the way those MMO concepts are quite interesting, the RTS one, to be honest I’ve always tried to find something that could bring that feel of a real time strat into the MMO world but it seems to be a game concept that is hard to into a massive universe. There have been games before it that have tried but to be honest I have yet to see one that can nail it. I may end up checking out that game and hope that it can pull off being a MMO RTS.

Tetra on the otherhand, one thing that always bothered me with game concepts like this is you are severely restricted by your character choices and it resembles more of diablo like character choice rather then something you would see in everquest, lineage and such. While those MMO did have class restriction the game Tetra itself seems to have severe restriction when choosing which race/class you want to be mainly because of animations I would think. Looking through the site this I noticed this question that has a very interesting answer which people do tend to forget when an MMO first comes out

“Why isn’t there a rogue class?
Our choice of classes reflects how players tend to interact with each other in groups while playing MMOs, and the various roles they play (and variations thereof). The slayer and berserker are both damage-dealing classes, while the lancer and warrior are both tank classes. That being said, launch content in any MMO is just the beginning!”

I think people just need to keep that in mind when an MMO is released. I’m curious to see how this game may turn out, it could be interesting but may be lacking severely in the customization department in return for making characters with specialized animations and actions to go with the race they are.

DnD online I tried personally and never got into it, one thing I’ve always felt that XI did right was the interface of the player, it felt realistic and movement wasn’t twitchy like in an FPS or nearly every other MMO. The same goes for XIV in the sense that they really worked their asses off creating a realistic movement for the avatar rather then have the movement feel like you’re sliding on ice which most MMO’s tend to feel like. I don’t know what it is about DnD online though it’s just something I could never get into though I tried.

With lord of the rings however I may be tempted to try it out with it being free but it depends on how restrictive it is for free, I tried the EQ 2 free play but found myself getting bored in the first area the whole tempo of the area just felt dry and dull no real sense of excitment to be had. With LOTR however the way the story moved reminded be of how XI was, the combat system was interesting to though I was sad to see that it didn’t seem to expand as much as I thought it would later on when I looked through guides of classes. While not a bad game by any means the F2P concept of LoTR success will definitely be determined by it’s content offered.

When it comes to Rift though I’m surprised you didn’t rip on it at all. Why should a game that feels like a carbon copy of WoW be given any sort of positive spin when it looks exactly like WoW. I don’t see how an MMO like this will succeed in the future if it doesn’t seem to offer anything new to the table and looks like something that could’ve been made 8 years ago.

Overall an interesting outlook on all the MMIOs listed I just wished you’d offer the same sort of calm and analytical outlook on XIV like you did with all the above MMOs listed. Definitely sounds you were able to have a lot of fun there though lol.

      • http://www.facebook.com/SwobyJ Malcolm Swoboda

Easy – because its not a carbon copy of WoW. I don’t think WoW can have even multiple zones taken over by elemental planes and be completely changed. In fact, WoW is nearly totally static in the world and only just started to change that a bit in WotLK.

      • Renaissance_nerd

actually he was approcing SE from the point of view that he was not impressed with their overall offerings lately and was hoping something at PAX would turn his view around. instead he was snubbed and dismissed and that had the effect of throwing gas on an already lit fire.So at that point he no longer wanted to to do research on his own because he already had all he needed to know i for one woudlent give a sparkling recomendation to a product when i was disrespected by it’s makers. everyone loves to bring up sales numbers, fine, there are 185k preorders, in MMO terms that is insignificant, AOC had near 500,000 pre orders and near 750,000 players first week, 185k is pathetic. . and as a long time Final Fantasy fan i am insulted at no thief class in FXIV, Locke Cole was a cornerstone of VI and the final fantasy mythos, balthier the sky pirate, Zidine all of the great han Solo Rogue archetypes in FF even Thief was one option for one of the warriors of Light from the first game. and Rift being like WoW is not a bad thing, in case you haven’t noticed WOW IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL MMO IN NORTH AMERICA. Spoony has said its not his cup of tea but he gives credit where credit is due. DDO is ok… my major complaint is that is all takes place in the basements and dungeons of a city, no world to explore.

  • Anonymous

How many of those are available for macs?

  • http://twitter.com/WhippleCake Matt

They all look the same. Apart from the nations one.

  • http://twitter.com/DruidAllanon Rasarik La’Troth

End of Nations looks really interesting. Me and my pals will probably go out and buy this.

  • http://mm-geek.blogspot.com/ Jaebird

End of Nations looks really intriguing, and I normally suck at RTS games. Tera also looks pretty good, but I’m not one to play a game where someone is screaming orders in my ear.

  • Anonymous

Hmm I’m not sure how I feel about Tera (Terra? I’ve already forgotten yeesh). The idea sounds really good and like it could make for a great game but I just don’t feel all that good about it. The art style is ok I guess I don’t really mind the style so much as the fact I can hardly tell what I’m seeing and wtf is going on, plus it’d be nice for some not GIANT MANLY MAN or LOOK AT MY BEWBS stereotype classes. That brings up another problem his description of the archer sounded like a god damn carbon copy of the hunter from WoW minus the pet I was really surprised to see such a lazy attempt looking at the video the archer even had one of the exact same skills they couldn’t even change the raining ice arrows to something different. I dunno maybe I’m giving WoW to much credit but this shit looks exactly the same.

Maybe it’ll be good but I don’t expect it to be.

    • Anonymous

So the TERA archer is exactly the same as the WoW hunter except it doesn’t have the one defining characteristic of the WoW hunter? And gasp.. an archer class that has similar abilities to every other archer class ever made in any MMO ever? Don’t mention that the combat is absolutely different and that the old /pet attack /autoshot /afk macroing wont work.Yes, you are giving WoW too much credit. WoW had no originality behind it and when you start complaining the archer class of all things, the one class that has been carbon copied from one game to the next for decades, has similar features to WoW’s archer and THAT makes the game shit, all it does is stamp a big “Fanboy” marker on your head.

      • Renaissance_nerd

i like you Syl, your replies make me smile

    • Anonymous

I know, right? As soon as I heard that the archer had access to traps, I wondered if he could have pets, too.

      • Renaissance_nerd

i know name a ranger in history (fact or fiction) that didn’t know how to use traps ZOMG they must rip off WoW as well *rolls eyes*

        • Anonymous

You can’t seriously look at this video and not see the similarities of course other rangers have used traps in media/history but this archer sure as hell looks like a WoW hunter. When you make a class and then give it a set of skills quite similar to a class from another MMO of course the comparison is going to be made.

          • Renaissance_nerd

if thats the case WoW is ripping off EQ, or DAOC, or any other MMO that came before it,

or any game that has a tank, a DPS, a nuker, and a healer if you want to get down to brass tacks.

          • Anonymous

All I’m trying to say is that the Archer just sounds like a carbon rehash at the moment I just want to see something not so generic and run of the mill, something with their own spin on it and currently it dosn’t look terribly unique.

Of the MMOs on the horizon, TERA is definitely the one I’m most excited about. Do I think it is going to be the Anti-WoW? No, but it’s something that is really going to attract people who are tired of the autoattack/afk combat that WoW (and most every other MMOs) or want a truly active and skill based combat system. Also, and most importantly to me, TERA will have PVE servers which has become increasingly rare in the MMO circuits and has caused a lot of them to quickly die since a few level 50s can ruin the experience for hundreds of other people by just ganking the living shit out of them *cough AION *cough*.
P.S. Smexy demon girls *swoon* Rift could also be interesting. There is a lot of people looking for a WoW that isn’t WoW.

    • Renaissance_nerd

thats an interesting point as i really have no gripe with the gameplay of WoW, its fairly fast paced, the roles are well defined in a group and there is a lot of loot to be had.

the biggest complaint i have with WoW is it’s art design and constant nagging pop culture references.

so a WoW that took itself seriously would be pretty fun to play.

      • Anonymous

I had my fun with WoW until even the raiding became pure grinding. Sorry Mr. Raid Leader but I do not want to clear Icecrown 4 times a week. And yeah, it looks like a cartoon. Though I would argue that the WoW classes no longer have well defined roles because almost every class can fit 2 or 3 roles these days depending on how much alter spec gear you’re willing to grind.. or just make a druid and be able to do everything at once.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, WOW’s art design does bug me a little. It’s almost as silly as Final Fantasy 10′s.

Another thing that never really impressed me about WOW was the lore. Kinda puts a damper on roleplaying efforts, and I’m hoping that I’ll have better luck with GW2 in that regard.

  • http://www.facebook.com/SwobyJ Malcolm Swoboda

Dammit, like nothing on Rift. Nothing on the dynamic content, server structure, rift invasions and zones being taken over, resurgence of world PVP, the soul system, lore, nothing. All of these things set it apart from WoW, yet give the familiar feeling of vanilla WoW. That sucks. I mean, you were already talking to Trion! :( Oh well.

  • Anonymous

A guildy (in WoW) recently pointed me towards TERA. I’m wary of it mostly because my internet connection is not entirely stable and I think that’s an unfortunate bit that’s going to prevent people from playing it. I will take a look every now and then but for now it’s not on high priority.

Thanks for the coverage Spoony! I hope we do get to hear your musings about games going to come out because we love to hear you talk and ramble believe it or not. We listened to you talking about greenscreens for half an hour even when we couldn’t help! Spoony feed us your opinions!

Something tells me that a lot of people will be playing female characters in Tera.

Anyway, very interesting showcase there. If I have a stable income next year, I’ll probably look into some of those MMOs, especially End of Nations. Yeah, I’ll probably suck at it, no doubt. All I usually end up doing in most RTS games is tech up and build up a huge armada/batallion/whathaveyou of the strongest unit in the game and just steamroll across the map… then again, I never really played the online multiplayer for Starcraft or Warcraft too much. Whenever I did, I’d get my ass hnded to me, and I know why, but I just can’t seem to break out of this habit of mine to always try to get the strongest unit and build as many as possible.

Anyway, people really need to stop about the FFXIV stuff. Spoony’s not giving the game a fair review, yeah, ok, well, who’s the blame for that? SE. Their actions at PAX are pretty damn unforgivable. Almost makes me question why they were there in the first place if all they were going to do is just point people to a booth and play/watch it without answering any questions. Maybe if SE could have swallowed their bloated ego for once and do a proper interview with Spoony, maybe he would have been a bit nicer to it… maybe.

You know, I saw the female characters in Tera and I was thinking that too. . . That’s something that always bothered me in those MMO games. . . they make the male characters average looking or really huge and muscular. . . and the female characters almost all of them look like whores! Even the Spell Casters!

I mean I like girls and everything but that has always bothered me. . .

      • Renaissance_nerd

well the majority of design teams are men.. so.. yea

        • Anonymous

If that were the legitimate reason, I would hope they’d get a slap on the wrist from someone in advance to adding the character models…

No, the reason is similar, but not on their direct focus, rather their market focus. Exact reasons stated above: if the female characters are everything impossible in a competent female combat character, then the raging boners will jump at the opportunity to play as them. This means more money for the owners and sellers.

And every game looks more exiting than Final Fanta$y! And yet people would rather play a generic MMO just because it has the FF and SE name on it. . .

    • Renaissance_nerd

yup SE has been running on the name alone since X

  • http://twitter.com/ShinAkumA21 ShinAkumA21

end of nation looks boring as hell …. Tera look super fun

  • http://twitter.com/TehLegendOfDuke Dylan Dunn

Honestly I’m going to end up playing both Old Republic and Guild Wars 2, so I doubt I’ll ever get around to other MMOs in 2011. I’m more curious about Tera than genuinely interested in it, and nothing about the others really grabbed me.

I might end up checking out DDO, though. Free is free after all.

    • Renaissance_nerd

id like to recomend ord of the rings online instead of DDO, DDO is a bit more aged and Turbine has released no xpansions for it,

LOTRO is a younger, more beautiful game in terms of looks, almost the entire map of middle earth to explore and tried and true MMO combat. plus 2 expansions one opens up Moria the 2008 winner of “biggest underground dungeon in an MMO” award. trust me its effin huge.

      • Anonymous

I’m trying out both DDO & LOTRO.

I tried DDO way back when, years ago; I hated it to death.

Now I gave it a shot again, just starting a few days ago and I love it. It took a while for me to get used to the combat system, but I enjoy it far, far more than I ever enjoyed WoW. And LOTRO is just bland to me, thus far. DDO hooked me right from the start [well, right after the incredibly annoying intro sequence] and as a Rogue, I actually felt -useful- compared to my counterparts in other MMOs. I actually like being the acrobat disarming traps & unlocking impenetrable doors. In WoW, there was always a way around it.

Anyway, I’ve only played LOTRO for a very short amount of time, and I’m giving it a shot with a friend, so I’m definitely going to give it more of a playthrough before I abandon it. I think it’s unfair to call DDO ‘dated’, though. The graphics & art style appeal to me more than LOTROs, but opinions, hey?

        • Renaissance_nerd

yea but when i said dated i meant literally, DDO came out like a year or so before LOTRO

      • Anonymous

I’m playing both LOTRO & DDO at the moment to give both a shot.

I prefer DDO’s look, graphics & artstyle to the rather dreary affair of Lord of the Rings. DDO actually makes me feel like I’m doing something important, and as a Rogue I don’t feel invalidated, as running dungeons on elite difficulty with a small party of a cleric, a barbarian, a wizard and myself means that they actually -really- have to be careful in terms of traps. The fact that I’m actually a really important asset, even though I may not be doing the highest amount of damage compared to the balls of lightning & the swinging axes, actually makes me want to play more. The combat system actually makes me feel a part of the action, compared to most games.

Whereas LOTRO as a Ranger so far is just sort of a dull, spam the buttons until the enemy dies, thing. Still, I’m going to play it properly for a while longer before I pass any real judgment.

As I listened to Spoony interview the rep for Tera, I couldn’t help but notice that I’d experienced a lot of what he described as a real time action MMO combat that relies on tactical movement and teamwork already… in WOW raids! Let’s see, attacks that flat out kill you in real time if you don’t avoid them? At least half the raid fights have those. A circle that can be used to indicate where people need to go? You can do that in WOW; it only marks one area on the minimap at a time, so it’s limited in function, but it’s there! Healers telling people to come near them in order to be healed? I’ve heard it before at least a dozen times.

Mind you, there are points to the interview. Solo combat is basically how the guy describes it, where you take turns hitting each other, as is taking out most mobs in dungeons. Also, all of the bosses in the 5-man, pre-Burning Crusade instances have nothing to them, either, and it looks like Cataclysm is sadly not going to change that. I have no doubt that Tera is going to improve on what WOW already has for raids and spread it out for all of the game’s fights, but the nitpicker in me kind of quailed at the implication that WOW has not strategy and teamwork in its fights at all. Spoony probably never got far enough in the game to see it, and I can’t really blame him for that. Oh, and even in the strategic fights, you do still lean on an attack rotation (1-1-1-2-3-1-5 and so on), or at least I do as a rogue.

I know the game still has some flaws to it, but it has changed in the years since it started. Some people think that’s for the worse, but I’m not one of them.

see i don’t have a problem of the gameplay of WoW to me its traditional MMO and its what i’m very accustomed to.

my problems are with the art design, rampant pop culture references and memes. General maturity of the populace and the fact WoW doesn’t take itself seriously at all.

yeah, kinda bugs me when someone talks about how new there thing is and how “intense” it is, yet that thing ALREADY EXISTS IN WOW, I highly doubt anything in tera will be as intense as lich king hard mode 25 man or a 0 lights in the darkness

and @renaissance_nerd every place on the internet has immature idiots, it’s just a lot of people play wow so it seems worse, but it’s not, and i never found the pop culture refrences and memes were really forced, hell when you play it for a while you forget they exist

      • Renaissance_nerd

try LOTRO there is almost no immaturity at least in public channels, is is a fraction of a fraction of the insanity that goes on in WoW trade chat alone.

well yeah, but it really depends on servers, on something like earthern ring people are fucking dumb asses but the server I play on it’s not so bad and i really wouldn’t judge the WHOLE of WoW on trade, that’s where most of the idiots go (that and the forums)

End of Nations looks cool, I like RTS games a lot and while I don’t claim to be spectacular at them, this looks cool and I hope it works out. Tera also looks like a lot of fun, and unfortunately DDO didn’t convince me to stop playing.

Also again I want to mention that you completely skipped firefall.

  • Anonymous

I am excited to see how End of Nations will be. Though I have a sneaking suspicion that any combat with more than 8 players on a map at the same time will become a clusterfuck of epic propotions. With people waiting to attack one another until their opponent is weakened from killing everyone else. Which means that the one who waits the longest to enter combat wins.

    • Renaissance_nerd

i can see maybe a lot of drive bys happening from exactly what you said.

End of Nations looks really promising and fun. The people who are working on the game pratically invented the RTS genre with classics like Dune 2 and Command & Conquer (the good ones, not the EA shit).

    • Renaissance_nerd

it looks interesting but i coulden’t help but feel i’ve seen this before, World in Conflict Multiplayer.

      • Anonymous

I thought the same. I loved WiC, but holy fuck it was rage inducing to get on a team of people who didn’t know what to do. With 51 players in EoN I sense a lot frustrating battles ahead.

  • http://twitter.com/Ryuzito RyuRanX

End of Nations looks really fun and addicting. It’ll probably move the genre forward as the developers claim. Well, it’s the makers of Dune 2 and Command & Coquer (the good ones, not the EA’s crap) we are talking about, the very creators of the RTS genre.

  • Anonymous

Sure sounds like at least a few developers recognize the problems with the status quo and are trying to fix those. That’s nice to hear. Yes, innovation is good.
Tera looks pretty fun. I notice you didn’t comment on the art style, which in those clips you showed seems kind of… maybe not that well thought out. It’s almost monochromatic, and it’s hard to distinguish between one shiny shape and another. But maybe in the actually gameplay it doesn’t present a problem? Either way, I like the thought of an action-RPG MMO.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/KNVPRFN4I6T62MS4E24TGCIV2Y Oni

I believe that it just speaks to that part of our brain that just wants to escape to a world where everything is over the top and nothing is average. Every man must be a Herculean man among men and every woman must have tits that will defy the laws of physics and are considered hot and quite possibly amazing in bed. I mean, yeah, I would never take the story seriously if the main character was a sex object (i.e. stuff like Ikkitousen), but at the same time, I won’t deny, if I were a man in that world, I’d do everything it takes to impale a woman like that on my sharp pointy stick… that is, before she impales me with her sharp pointy- GYAAARGH!!!!!!!!

Anyway, yeah, it’s silly, but I don’t exactly play fantasy games expecting average looking characters. I mean, when there is an average looking female character in a fantasy game, I’ll appreciate her, but what’s going to catch my eye more: average lady with B/C cup breasts or amazing hot babe with DD/E guzongas? I suppose it’s all preference, but the more sexual/slutty they look, the more eye catching they are, for better or worse.

    • Anonymous

sheesh… I hate to see what plane Jane women your into (if you like women that is). You afraid of well designed breasts? I always enjoy a good laugh reading about people complaining because the women in video games look good and have curvaceous bodies. Give me a break with that bull. If you want to stare at ugly women go right ahead there’s a world full of them. Talking about a woman with B/C/D/E cups or whatever just seems insecure because you probably can’t attract their attention so like most everyone else you complain about what you can’t get. Here’s a news flash for you! Those D/E cup women are the same as those A/B cup women. Video games are fantasies you can play so like everything else of course you can get what you want in that fantasy world. If I’m going to play a game do I want to be bothered with Olive oil Rosie O’Donnell looking women with mustaches like I am in the real world? Hell No! I want to look at something that looks good. It’s like the laws of the world flipped and it’s wrong to be heterosexual and appreciate a woman’s body now.

and P.S. Ikkitousen was an anime made to be eye candy of course it has heavy sex appeal. If your looking for an anime that features women and a story without all the innuendo’s go look up Claymore.

Tera was one of my favorite games of the show. The combat felt really smooth, the art was fantastic and I can’t wait to play it.

I’m so glad you talked to Jamie, he was one of the nicest guys I met the entire conference (he gave me a 20+ minute interview and afterwards I talked to him for another 10-15 minutes becoming quick friends) and all of his answers were straight up. If he didn’t like something he wouldn’t BS with me. He was very sincere and I really appreciated it.

As for the other ones…well…Rift looks good (one of Jamie’s friends worked on it), End of Nations has potential but needs work, Torchlight was fun and the kids based MMOs were surprisingly good

Tera does remind me of Monster Hunter in the sense that you have teamwork to bring down giant bosses, but it also seems to be a lot more complex than that, looks awesome. The online RTS is impressive too

TERA and Blade and Soul for great justice!

Those Tera character designs look pretty good eh. Too bad all the pixilated t*tt*es my computer could handle still would never make me pay a monthly subscription fee for an MMO.

Also, to respond to your PS, I’m aware that Ikkitousen is eye candy, watched all 3 seasons, and I fully enjoy it, but I’m not watching it for the story, hell no. Just sayin’. I’ve also seen Claymore, and while awesome, didn’t really like how it ended. Friggin’ cliffhangers.

I also liked the Tera dude. I’m always wary about new NCSoft MMOs, but if Tera works out well it might just be what I’ve always been looking for in an MMO, at least combat wise. I’m not digging the art style of it, however.

good news about that, a court ruled that interplay has until the end of 2011 to release a fallout MMO or it goes to bethesda.

A lot of solid choices coming down the pike I see. I can already see some complaints about the female design in Tera though, what with the women looking like they sell sex for money more than belong in combat. I’d love to see an MMORPG come a long that allows complete customization of your character to appeal to people like that and please everybody. Like for example, allowing you to make your female knight look like she is wearing either steel plated lingerie complete with chain mail thong if you want or, alternately, to allow her to look barely recognizable as a girl at all under all her big spikey badass armor at your discretion as a player. No actual in game effects, just purely aesthetic. Might appeal more to the people turned off by the slutty female look by giving them the customization.

    • Renaissance_nerd

i personally think Woman warriors head to toe in plate is hot, i don’t dig the chainmail bikinis ya know

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NP4OHROSJRZNA4KSDWNZVQ3TIA First L

MAN, if hookers looked like THAT, I’d pay for sex. If they’re supposed to look like they sell sex, this game sets an unrealistic standard for prostitutes. I’m offended.

      • Anonymous

Well, it comes in varying degrees, of course. Selling sex is much like selling anything else. The standard hooker is sort of like the Walmart employee whereas the escort (the ones that might look, you know, like they haven’t been in a knife fight) are more like the wall street stock salesmen. Different levels of the same job. Anyone can be a hooker but not many make good escorts.

Tera really caught my eye. So I’m going to have to choose a game to really jump into.

Though Tera’s design for female characters is a real put-off for me. I like sexy women, of course. It’s just that when you need to add and display them for your main trailer footage, it just speaks poorly of your product in my mind.

I’m always cautious of any game that needs to add (Even more) sexualized (than “normal”) women into their game.

I found Tera interesting, probably something I’d pick up if GW2 wasn’t already on the way. The archer in Tera… kind of hard to call it a WoW clone when we’re seen nothing more than the visuals of one skill to be honest. Oh no! They use bows, WOW RIPOFF!
    Sheesh.

Of course, GW2 is making their ranger quite unique from the WoW hunter… perhaps Tera is too? Too soon to tell.

  • Anonymous

You may like GW2 as well… no PvP in the persistent world, PvP has it’s own area (The Mists) which will be a massive PvP/PvE experience. Sieges, supplies, raw combat… makes me tingly.

Sounds like you’re talking about GW2. All Tera is changing it seems is the combat (for the better, I might add) when compared to WoW or the like.

I’ve got to say that I’ve enjoyed this look into PAX. I like hearing what you’ve got to say about new games, and I think that you’ve gotten a lot better at these on the spot interviews since E3. Part of that, I’m sure is making sure you’ve got the right gear and that it’s in working order, but even that’s really part of the learning process. Personally, I’d rather watch you interview these people than some professional reporter tied to a network because ( as you said ages ago in one of your vlogs ) you’re someone we can relate to. Whether or not we always agree with you, we’re at least familliar with you and can understand where you’re coming from, which I think is one of your greatest strengths as a reviewer. I wouldn’t mind seeing more con coverage like this ( I mean, it’s more Spoony, which is no bad thing ), but I kind of have to agree with what you say towards the end. You’re going to have to find a good balance between these sorts of things and your ‘normal’ reviews. I wouldn’t say you’ve been doing a bad job of it, but going forward, it is definitely something to keep in mind – which I think you are, especially in your call to arms for a video editor. Makes me wish I was in your area and knew how to edit videos, honestly XD I’d be thrilled to have a chance to work with you.

    • Anonymous

I was hoping he’d cover The Old Republic too, that’s the one MMO I’m actually more than vaguely interested in. This Terra thing, though…I like the idea. Combat in most MMOs is usually pretty dull (especially in WoW), it will be nice to see an MMO focusing on action. Even if they don’t get it right, they’ll at least be laying the groundwork for others to follow up on.

Tickets to Magfest seem rather cheap too, and it’s not too awful far from me. Might consider going if I get to bask in Spoony’s snarkiness.

Yeah, seriously, im so looking forward to TOR. GW 2 has also gotten my interested lately, I hated the first one. But ive been hearing good things about GW 2 i just hope its not totally instanced like the first one which something tells me it will be due to the event system they are using.

I hope Spoony tries out DDO again, it’s quite fun compared to most other MMOs I’ve taken a stab at, and quite frankly, offers the best system of combat that actually makes you feel like you have control over your character. Is it as sophisticated as Demon’s Souls? I wish, but trying to get an MMO tweaked to that level of gameplay in an MMO instance-based setting would take a hell of a lot of work and probably be like a 5 year project.

But yeah, Spoony, if you try out DDO again with AngryJoe and the guys, look up the Sabbat guild on the Ghallanda server and ask for Rtwo (yes, my warforged wizard is named Rtwo Dtwo!) and I’ll be glad to give ya’ll any assistance you need!

It was funny though one thing I noticed:

Torchlight 2, SWTOR, Tera, Rift and End of Days were all clumped near each other. It was like they had their own MMO corner.

I think one of the reasons why he didn’t get to The Old Republic is from Day 1 until the last minute of the last day, The Old Republic was packed with journalists, eager gamers and cosplayers trying to get their hands on the game and play it. Unless you had an appointment WAAAY ahead of time, you weren’t talking to anyone from Bioware or Lucasarts.

But it was awesome when I finally got my hands on it. I have a few quips and problems with it but these are problems that will and probably are being fixed before the game ships next year (minor bugs on some of the classes but nothing serious). I was quite entertained.

And I’m glad you all seemed to like Jamie. It was funny though now that I look back at my video I forgot to ask him about co-op or groups. Good one Spoony….

You know End Of Nations sounds ALOT like a game that came out a few years on multiple Platforms called Tom Clancy’s EndWar. Kind of skipped over Rift. Even though its probably second in hype behind Guild Wars 2 by people that actually play MMO’s. I agree with you though Rift looks like the “safe” choice. It’s like if your tired of WoW an ready for a new MMO you can jump right into it since its almost like WoW 2. The actual unique things about Rift being that it has the same dynamic events that GW2 does. An a more flexible class system than WoW. You get like 4 class’s with 8 talents trees instead of WoW’s 10 with 3 or whatever it was. An you can switch them out on the fly. So its a lot less repetitive an restricting. But I agree its a shame Rift isn’t innovating with the combat like some of the others are doing.

I didn’t know much about Tera but it does look interesting. Except for the part about 5 man only. 5 people isn’t really an MMO to me. That’s pretty much why I got tired of WoW was the focus on instances kept it from feeling like an MMO. As for End of Nations I like the innovation but it looks way too basic for me. Like your just fighting with 3 different kinds of tanks based on the videos I have seen. If they don’t have more tactical variety then that then its going to get old fast.

i kind of take issue with the guy from Tera, saying how unique the combat, is,

MMORPG’s didn’t have the traditional combat system because of network or internet lag or limitation. It had those combat systems because they were trying to bring a traditional RPG fight system to this big multiplayer RPG, so you clicked to turn on your auto attack then you clicked skills in your hotbar much like picking spells and attacks in RPG’s.

and really to be honest hasn’t diablo 2 been doing the strategic multiplayer RPG a lot longer? Hell Age of Conan had a more interactive/action oriented battle system.

not saying Tera won’t be good i just don’t think its as innovative as he’s saying it is.

Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m not completely disagreeing with you but I did play Tera for a while and while it’s not the most innovative combat system ever, it IS very well done and quite unique in it’s own way. Am I saying it’s the next big thing in terms of how combat works from now on in MMOs? No. But it does change up the status quo of things enough that it can stand on it’s own.

Basically you won’t be saying that Tera’s combat is ripping off some other game.

      • Renaissance_nerd

ok fair enough how can i argue with someone who has played it. Just when you start your presentation with something that is very debatable is kind of undermines the rest and kind of shows your lack of knowledge of MMO history.

        • http://www.facebook.com/tjmac510 Travis McCollum

No I see exactly what you mean. I knew when I talked to him that this would be a very debated topic (not as much as FF14 apparently but still) and while it does somewhat undermine the rest, I think what Jamie was doing was trying to tell crowds and press why it wasn’t just a WOW clone. I think Diablo or other titles from the past were the last things on his mind. And can I really blame him. Most MMOs, or at least Fantasy MMORPGs seem to kind of work off the WOW formula a little to closely. I know there are exceptions but put yourself in his shoes. He was standing right next to the KOTOR and Torchlight 2 booths, both of which already have a following, and is presenting a new title that, without some new innovations, could be nothing more than a WOW clone on the outside. So I can forgive him for this one. He IS trying to sell a game to an audience.

Well I was shaking my head about his going on about (paraphrasing) “oh we have bosses like something out of an action game with wind-up attacks and tells” and I couldn’t help but think about how WoW’s raid game and higher level dungeons are already full of heavily scripted bosses with complex patterns, wind-up super attacks and all. Even with Blizzard’s more deliberately paced combat system they push larger raids to the breaking point with frantic boss battles such as Mimiron, Yogg-Saron, or the Lich King. To use an analogy to another game, you’re worrying less about how to make Mega Man shoot bullets, and instead trying to survive to defeat the boss. If you instead had a combat system that requires a high level of individual skill just to do the damage itself, something closer to say Monster Hunter… yeah, it’s going to be very hard to go past small group play and keep it at a balanced challenge level.

I do enjoy some Monster Hunter multiplayer, but I also value the more social nature of WoW raiding. At the same time, I can already play several action RPGs containing exclusively small group content with free online. I’m having a hard time seeing the justification for a sub here. Why not follow a Battle.Net or Guild Wars type business model?

An RTSMMO? Sounds really cool at first, but when I really stop to think about it, that wont have much to offer a none RTS buff once the novelty fades. Tera looks kind of interesting, and it sells me on its combat. The problem is, its competing with Guildwars 2 with this new, more action adventury feel. It has a good shot of competing there, but I see it falling short in other departments. After combat, they have to compete against Guildwars 2′s relatively crisp, beautiful visuals. Not to mention a strong narrative, done by a TSR veteran!

Have to give Guildwars 2 best in show this year, at least for MMOs. It is being just ambitious enough with its combat, so as to make it feel fresh and unique to older MMO players. While still having all of the good, accessible bits to make it easy and enjoyable for people just jumping in.

End of Nations isn’t really that innovative. It’s bascially EndWar, except with more players per map. Or World In Conflict with a world domination mode (and more players per map).

I wasn’t about to post because MMOs aren’t my thing, but that Tera trailer made me face/palm so hard I had to.

I mean, I’m sure those tiny patches of clothing on the female horned elves keep them absolutely safe from being dismembered. Hell, I didn’t see one female in proper battle gear in that trailer, whereas all the males they zoomed in on were fully ready to face an enemy horde. Total “turn-off” for a female gamer like myself, who doesn’t like her game character to pander around in an “armour” that leaves half her chest naked.

Actually, why not have an in-game slider feature of how much flesh you want exposed and from who. That way everyone would be happy, although in different ways I imagine >__>

Yes, EVE has one hell of a motherfucking learning curve. The whole thing about Dust 514 is that apparently not only do they take place in the same universe, they take place at the same time. You can supposedly call in air support from EVE friends during a Dust 514 match, for example. The latest update to EVE added planetary interaction and Dust 514 is supposedly going to be a method with which people wage war for control over planets, because right now there could theoretically be a thousand guys on a lucrative planet raping it of resources. With Dust coming in, a corporation could hire out some Dust guys to wreck the stuff of the other guys so they can have more resources for themself.

At least, thats how I heard it’s going down. I haven’t cared too much about the planetary interaction.

I’m really into End Of Days and I hope it will be as good as people say it will :).

By the way what happened to your right hand Spoony? Seemed hurt.

PS. Yeah EVE online is only for hardcore people who can get over the learning curve (although there are A LOT of tutorials)
And yeah ;). I’m hardcore and playing it.

I would like to say this about EVE online shoot Dust 514 it will be fully integrated not just exist with in the universe of EVE online as in the shooter will effect planetary sov. Yes EVE online is not noob friendly if you need to told this is what you do and want too be uber powerful in 2 week go play one of those generic sword and monster killing mmo’s EVE online is those players that enjoy giant fleet battles, espionage, back stabbing etc. But that being said if a noob finds a good corp they can be molded into an affective pvp pilot in about 30 days. And CCP has made steps too make being a noob easier more missions for training etc.

Damn I was hoping for some Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium news.

Weirdly the game I’m kind of interested in is EVE. I played it a couple of years back but kinda lost interest when the guys I was playing with naffed off to Warhammer Online and never came back. I think I might have to give it another go. Especially with this shooter tie that could be fun.

Tera doesn’t really seem all that impressing. The combat mechanic sounds somewhat cool but all that “group utility” stuff has been in WoW since forever in end-game raiding.

Awesome coverage of PAX. Although I have to say, Spoony, there were times when it looked like you were about five seconds from keeling over. Not in this particular video segment so much, but in the earlier ones where you were interviewing people, you almost looked like you were about to pass out from exhaustion. Don’t know whether you were actually tired or not, but really, man, get some sleep.

Aaanyway. I’m really looking forward to Guild Wars 2. Out of all the coverage of PAX, that’s what impressed me the most. As an RPG gamer, I have never found an MMORPG that I could actually say has a proper RPG component. I mean, you never made an impact on the world, there was no real personalisation, you went on the same boring quests over and over and over again and, let’s face it, the grinding suuuuuuucked. I mean this looks like it actually HAS some role-playing in it! Oh god… this means that hell has frozen over, doesn’t it? Satan’s gonna be pissed…

The combat of TERA seriously looks more flexible and exciting than the GW2 version of realtime action combat, but my research also tells me that TERA will be yet another grindfest with those shitty “bring me ten wolf fangs” quest lines all the way through. GW2 on the other hand looks alot like a really cool adventure (which you can genuinely call it that way) we’ve been missing all this time in the genre. Although the combat system is also way more action based than GW, it will have no real skill shots, just those AoE circles. Hell, the necromancer barely did anything in the footage I saw, his pets auto attacked everything to death while he rarely dropped that green creature crippling field sometimes. On top of that, almost all of the enemies in GW2 seemed to barely ever move and just auto attacked the nearest person. But if that is really the case in the final version, then how does their more action oriented combat system change anything combat wise? Right, it doesn’t really change anything.

Bottom line: TERA has the combat and GW2 the adventure. Lets make them work together, so we’ll get the best MMORPG ever made?

Funny Spoony should mention EVE. I just recently started playing the game on a 21-day trial a friend sent me. It seemed interesting because of the Butterfly Effect trailer, and it just seemed cool flying around in my own personal starship doing cool sci-fi shit. I started off with the tutorial, and it seems functional for the most part, but the interface seems kinda complicated. And……I have no friggin’ clue what to do next. Can anyone how there offer some advice as to how to get some enjoyment out of it? The newbie chats were so clogged I couldn’t get a word in.

Also, it’s funny that Spoony should compare Tera to Dynasty Warriors. Because Aeria Games just started handing out invites for the Closed Beta of Dynasty Warriors Online.

well i know u posted this a longgg time ago …but i played eve several times…the first 2 times i had no idea what i was doing…..the third time i did a huge amount of research ….god i know thats sad – but its what u need to do to learn the game…its really complicated and you really have to read guides on how to do certain things…..
you will want to learn how to “tank” for missions of certain levels and thats how you’ll make money etc. but all i can say is readdddd a lot!

I am not going to lie, I hate mmorpgs. Thats unfair to say you think? Not really, its my opinion after all and its not becouse they are bad per say its just not for me. I just dont like mmorpg gameplay mechanics and I dont like the fact im expected to religiously play it to get anywhere or risk all my friends jumping too far ahead of me.

For these reasons I am glad to se things like Tera starting up with actually intresting combat. I have all the guild wars stuff but ive never got round to completing it all. Someday ill get round to it. I think put it off due to guilt as it was free and I was suckerd in to paying for final fantasy 11 which I did not enjoy. Final fantasy 11 just pissed me off. kept annoying me and me spending long breaks away from it and getting nowhere.

One thing I want to see in mmorpgs is the death of autobattle. in final fantasy 11 there was nothing more boring than playing a fighter, selecting an opponant and watching him fight. you can imagine my annoyence to find it was the same situation in 12 when I thought I was going to get a real final fantasy game. From this you would think 13 annoyed me but it didnt as at least you had to tell it to put in commands and it was more of a case of quickly micromanaging your party and the system felt like it was an actual final fantasy system. 12 felt like a japanese attempt at making a bioware game to me and whilst good was still not the final fantasy I have been wanting for 10 years. Im not saying autobattle does not work, but I prefer it with a full team of people to manage and proper melee combat skills to keep you doing things which is why bioware games work.

Guild wars had an autobattle one had it but it was kinda balenced by skills charging up fairly quickly and so usually having something to do even with one character. I am pritty won over by guild wars 2 as with the perminent concequences for your actions having an effect for all players its going to make me feel actually important and its what I wanted from mmos origionally. The new battle system looks less autobattle with the combo system so it looks like it could be perfect for me..

At the moment the only mmorpg I play is shin megami tensei imagine. I admit its a bag of lag but the combat is fun and has a lot of button mashing and action. That and I am a total megaten fanatic. I am not saying it does not have problems but it gives me something close to what I want from my mmo till guild wars 2.
