    I’m still worried about you…
You’re still reviewing TNA and stuff.
As a great man used to say, “It’s all bullshit, folks, and it’s bad for ya!”…
Just try to take better care of yourself. IDK how…
    Listen to Scarlett more…
    Do something…

Damn Spoony. I’ve been kinda frustrated about the lack of new material but now I realize your reason. Get better man, you’re doing great work.

I’m glad to hear you’re going to be doing better, once the meds kick in and stuff. I knew someone who had a similar symptoms and the doctors had to operate on him, and… well, they had to “kill” him 3 times to find out it was some sort of weird neurological issue. Yeah, the docs would ramp up his heart and then well… he would die, and bring him right back out of it and… repeat until no longer necessary.I’m REALLY glad you don’t have to do something like that just so the docs can diagnose the issue. Anyways Spoony, get well, go read your Gamma World RPG book, and good luck with the meds.

Dude, you don’t need to justify yourself to anyone– take whatever time you need and get your health stuff squared away. Hopefully the med transition will go over well, but don’t be afraid to take whatever time you need if it doesn’t. Meds are weird.

Thanks for all your hard work, and tell your heart to calm the fuck down.

That sounds not good… I hope the new medicine works! Get well soon! >__<

I love your v-logs and reviews but I can wait. You are working on so much stuff, it's incredible! Maybe you should slow down a little bit… Or maybe you cancel some stuff… Decide what's really important. There is no need to comment everything, you know? And the less stress you have the better for your heart. I think your fans will understand if you take the time you need. Don't worry about us. ^^

    Take care! ^^

I did a stress test when I had a hole in my heart. It was great.

I’m glad you’re doing ok though. My heart condition never affected my physical performance, so I can’t really relate, but try not to die.

If it helps, I too have a similar condition. And with medication, I’ve been able to live a pretty normal life. I’m sure you’ll see once you give it some time, you will too. It really makes a considerable difference. But, don’t be afraid to ask for a higher dosage if you still feel overwhelmed by it. I had to learn that the hard way. Anyway, we’re all pulling for you man. Take care.

Spoony, for organizing DND tokens/pogs, I would suggest taking a cardboard tube you would find inside of a paper towel or toilet paper roll, cut it straight down one of the sides and fold it out into 2 semispheres you can use to store tokens, and I’d probably put them in a shoebox or some kind of container and put tabs on them and organize them alphabetically.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1218524780 Doug Hancox

You could hit your local collectibles store to pick up plastic sheets used for coin collecting and keep your tokens in a 3-ring binder. As for the larger ones, you could probably keep those in a larger card collection sheet.

  • Anonymous

For the whole storing your monster tokens, I might have a suggestion. Remember POGS? Well, when they were all the rage, I bought binder sleeves to store my POGS. It’s pretty much like storing trading card in a binder. You might be able to find some on Ebay. Then you can just have a binder full of you tokens.

Best wishes to you and your health- I hope your new meds work for you. I know how much it can suck when your body doesn’t seem to like you very much.

As for organizing your D&D tokens, you may want to look at a few different albums intended for coin collecting.

I have to ask this: Did the doctors check your back? I once got mine messed up by the wrong bedtype and had similar heartproblems (along with breathing problems and headaches) due to the nerves in the back and the spine where strained/squeezed which somehow lead to wrong information being given to the various muscles. (Don’t really know how exactly it works, but a few medical massages (and a new mattress) helped (except for the breathing, that problem came from from the leftovers of a bronchitis)

Heroes of The Forgotten Kingdoms and Heroes of the Fallen Lands are supposed to be redundant. The idea of wizards was to not force you to have to buy PHB1 for rules and PHB3 for the monk etc. Concept being you like with the _____:the______ series you buy the book that has what you want. It was actually suggested by the D&D podcast that sharing the books is the way to go.

Relax and just take it slow. I like the v-blogs, especially the reviews of shitty movies. Your explanation of Twilight was far better then the movie itself.

P.S. If you don’t want to be on cam there is always Deadly Premonition! Please say you aren’t done with that game.

Well, there is nothing really more to add, I think other people have already said everything, so there is no point for me, to repeat it.So…. Relax, take a break for a few weeks, then (I’d say) start with something easier for you like Let’s play or Commentaries. Sure, we want reviews… but we can wait… a lot! :)This says I! Oh good god, Spoony… I don’t know how you took all this but I would have been so fucking scared if all of that was happening to me. O__O I heard you had health issues but I had no idea it was so serious.

Seriously, take it easy and take care of yourself. Don’t try to be too brave and end up messing yourself up even more again. Anybody who doesn’t understand is a huge dick. And yeah… like everybody else is saying already: we can wait.

I really hope the new meds work and that the transition goes well. (Heh, I’m actually in the middle of changing medication too.) Oh and get well soon! (But don’t get back to work full-time right away even if you feel better, let it settle, ‘kay?)

Last month was slow?! You put up 11 videos, not counting Wrestle Wrestle. Sure it was mostly Vlogs and commentaries but that’s still way more than I’d expect someone who had to go to the ER to do in a month. You spoil us.

Thank you for taking the time to sit down and let us know what’s going on. I hope the new meds work out for you and I hope you start to feel better soon. Feel free to slow down a bit more and recover.

On a final note I love these unboxing vlogs. It’s fun fun to watch you geek out over this stuff. Makes me feel better about my own geekiness . The way you are with RPGs is how I am with anime (probably worse). So thank you for putting these up. And you have to let us know if you do have the WWF RPG.

For organizing the tokens, my suggestion would be in notebooks. Get loose leaf sheets for business cards or baseball cards and put the tokens in alphabetical order. That way you can carry them all in 1 or 2 notebooks and go through and pick them out really quick.
Also, you could use that to pre-pull ones for the adventure and put them in the front of the notebook in special sleeves.

It’s so unfair that such an asshole like me doesn’t have problems with health (even though I don’t care about it completely). I feel disgust towards myself, for not appreciating what I have, everytime I hear stories like this. I hope you get better.

  • http://twitter.com/riftwolf Mathew Presley

Hope you get better soon. If you think about how much you’ve been doing in the past 9 months (E3 or Kickassia alone would’ve finished off lesser men) I’m surprised you stuck it out this long if you’re ill.

  • Anonymous

I really feel for ya, Spoony. With my anxiety and seizures, I know how it is to not be able to do “normal” things without fear of losing consciousness or worse. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we’re all wishing the best for you and if you were to take a break from the videos for a while, we completely understand. Hell, your SWAT videos are funny no matter how many times I watch them. Good luck to you, man.

You have to wait a week to get your meds? That’s kinda stupid. Here in germany, if an Apotheke (pharmacy) dosn’t have what you need they’ll order it for you and it will usually be there in half a day. That is if you are far away fro civilisation. If you are in a big city it will only ta an hour or so…

Well I hope you get your meds soon and that they work really well and you get well fast. :)

    • http://spoonyexperiment.com The Spoony One

I don’t have to wait a week– I could have gone right to a pharmacy. I just normally get my meds cheaper by mail order. I’ll be okay as long as I take it easy.

I like the alignment system too. But my only problem is when people do something that would counter that alignment i will point it out and say “well your guy wouldnt do that based on his alignment/class” to which the ALWAYS respond, “Its my guy, I can do whatever i want.”

I kick that motherfucker out of my group everytime. Me and this guy are mortal enemies to this day because of it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sam-Williams/600640077 Sam Williams

Man you are a legend. From watching your videos it is clear that you work really hard on this stuff and if you need to take a break I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking it is a) well earned and b) no big deal. As much as I love to see new videos up your health is far more important.

  • Anonymous

You’re not the only fan of alignments. Our own group is quite facist on enforcing them as well and I honestly am glad of it. We tend to lean Neutral Good/Chaotic Good anyway, and that’s the one that’s allowed us the most wiggle room.

Lost all my dragon hide armor, got eatin by a zombie shark, TWICE, and then met a loch ness monster type creature then died thanks to a fellow party member being an idiot.

Dear Spoony. I’m glad your getting better and I hope you are doing well now.

You and I are about the same age and I too am getting over some health issues that I have experienced lately. Not nearly what you have but still uncomfortable. I hope you get whatever treatment that you need and that you can lead a normal life.

Keep up the good work. I love your site and the effort you put in. Can’t wait for more Final Fantasy X videos.

    Spoony,
I’ve had heart problems my whole life, so I totally know sort of what you’re going through here. Heads up: getting off your old meds and on to your news one is probably going to kick your ass until your body adjusts unless you’re shockingly resilient. However, new meds is a good sign! I have a similar problem with a too strong heart, as it were, but I never had the suction problem like you. Mine just thought it would be fun to tear itself in pieces :(
However, I’m very, very glad you’re on the mend, I know what a relief that is. Give the meds a little while to kick in and then ease in to new activity. Don’t want to blow out your whole system! Feel better, bro, you’re awesome.

Hey Spoony, glad to hear things are getting better slowly but surely. Can’t believe you still had “people” (if you can call such buttheads that) that were complaining about a lack of videos. Considering how unwell you’ve been, for you to even have put out what you have is far beyond what anyone could expect of you…ignore the complainers and take all the time you need, hell, give it a month to allow for getting used to the new medication. Website stuff is a distant second to life stuff.

Hi Spoony. I hereby send you well-wishes from Germany. My friends and I are big fans of you and we all hope you’ll get better soon. I’m glad to hear you have at least some kind of information of what is wrong with your health and have a chance of recovery. And believe me I know what it feels like to be told by doctors that something serious has happened but that they have no clue as to what caused it or may cause it again. Thanks to that I now have malfunctioning heart and a blind spot in my left eye -_-
Again, hope your medication does the trick.
Btw…does this mean, that TNA (or Mainstream wrestling in general) is now so bad, that it actually is threatening your health?

I already have declared a blood vengeance against TNA Impact, and if you should die from reviewing TNA it will become a double blood vengeance almost a triple blood vengeance. I don’t even know what that means but it sounds like it could destroy a large portion of the multiverse, and I don’t think you want that on your conscience. So take it easy lest it rend our world and others in twain.

Take it easy man, hope to see you get better soon!

When you talked about how you can’t go into a geek store and not buy every RPG books that look interresting, I was like “My brother!” By the way, that WWE game is at least the third wrestling based roleplaying game I heard about, fourth if you count the wrestling based sourcebook for All Flesh Must be Eaten. When you’ll feel better, you should do a small game of Know your Role with fans, it looks awesome!

I use river encounters alot because it leads to lots of interesting situations, plus crossing rivers was a big deal to explorers. Go for a hike through an area with a couple of sizeable rivers crossing them is a pain in the ass and fording one without getting any gear wet is nuts. loads of fun when theres nothing but city folk in the party.

Spoony, dude, Your health really should come before these videos. Honestly if people give you flack for taking time off to recover and protect your heart, to hell with them, they don’t care about you. Protect yourself and get better, in the long run you can make up for it without having to live nervous.

The “heaviness” on the chest. The feeling of being about to pass out. All of this occurring on any kind of exertion. That sounds a terrible lot like an attack of unstable angina occurring due to myocardial ischaemia. If you’re getting what sounds like sinus arrest or chronotropic overcompensation… I mean that really, really sounds like Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM). I mean, I’m not sure on the pathophysiological origin of it (which is varied and still in question), but first you have concentric hypertrophy of ventricular myocardium (cause ?) which lays the groundwork for dysfunctional compensatory mechanisms. In the end it causes tachycardia and accentuated ventricular contraction so severe that it creates a negative intraventricular pressure vacuum that distorts cardiac valves (particularly the tricuspid and aortic valves) and puts immense pressure on the papillary muscles and chordae tendinae. As a result it can cause cardiac arrest, drastic hypoperfusion of certain organs (e.g. the brain and the heart itself) causing syncope (fainting) and angina (chest heaviness/pain), and cause palpitations or palpable murmurs. In addition, it takes quite a while after an episode for function to resume normally. I mean this kinda describes the symptoms I’ve heard so… er… …I really need to stop trying to line up differential diagnosis for other people’s medical problems, especially when such hypothesis is based on only partial information. It’s a really bad habit that I need to stop. I apologise for it. Anyway, considering that any cardiologist has not only finished medical school but has devoted somewhere between 4 and 8 years specializing in heart disease, I’m pretty sure I’m vastly underqualified to be hypothesizing here. I mean they’ve already put you on Carvedilol (a newish non-selective beta-blocker) as a primary instead of Propanolol (which is a bit of an oldie with a nasty history of averse effects and contraindications) which should definitely help.Anyway, please TAKE TIME OFF and have a proper vacation. Please take care of yourself. TNAimpact definitely is not going away (… well not unless someone at SpikeTV comes to their senses), and anyone with half a brain can see how you’ve been just killing yourself to get these videos done. Take whatever time you need to get well again. I must be one of hundreds to say this but there’s supposed to be strength in numbers and all that so: take it easy and hope you get better soon. And remember this: caffeine, amphetamines, cocaine, crack, heroin, ecstasy, deep-sea diving, electric shocks, and adrenaline-inducing near-death experiences are NOT your friends. Avoid them.

My fiance had a suggestion on organizing the pog/tokens that actually sounded good. Where I’m sure you’re all familiar with card holder pages for 3 ring binders, as you might use for Magic Cards, some craft stores, like Hobby Lobby, carry similar clear pages for coins. Using that kind of thing would allow you to organize them however you want and keep them all together without having the problem that other methods might.

How’s your blood pressure? Is it the kind where if you get poked with a needle you squirt like a fire hose? All these drugs sound like they’re designed to lower your blood pressure. Take it easy Spoony, or else we’ll have to start spoonin’ your grave.

Hey Noah, I hope you start feeling better. I always enjoy your reviews; they’re funny, memorable, and great! I also can’t wait to see what you release in the future. Take some time off and get to feeling better, I know all of us who are fans of you and your videos want to see you get into tip=top shape. I think of it like this, it’s better to take some time off now and release some really good videos in the future, rather than to push yourself too hard now and end up hurting yourself and not being able to produce videos in the future. You are human, sometimes people who are online forget that. Take care.

The Essential books are just as you said, Player’s Handbooks. They are intended, in addition to being an expansion for existing players, to be pick and play for new players. Each book is self contained ruleswise. The “idea” is that a DM will have the books he needs to run, and each player or the group of players are responsible for their “stuff”. So, if you only play one character, you only really need to buy the book with your character in it.

It’s also meant to avoid the problems involved in making characters out of the older books, or especially the compendium, where at just about every level you are faced with a TON of choices. [Hundreds of feats, dozens of powers at the appropriate levels, several paragon paths or epic destinies to choose from, etc]. Similarly, during a fight, you have many powers to choose from, and since many are in limited supply (encounter/daily powers) you have to decide when best to use them.

Many of the options in the book reduce the choices to be made while levelling (a lot of classes are given a single encounter power they get multiple times, for example, and even when they do have options, they are given 2 or 3 to pick from [although in those cases, they can take stuff from other books if they don't mind having more options].

Because they want to avoid overwhelming a new player with choices and they want to keep the build size down, they restrict most classes to 2 builds for the most part. Also, this allows them to then introduce the “other” builds onto the website (they’ve already introduced a staff fighter and a star pact hexblade, etc) as well as in future books (there is a Heroes of Shadow book coming out which has shadow options).

Take it easy for as long as you need, Spoony. We’ll still be here when you’re ready. Sure we’ll miss seeing new stuff from you, but your health is -far- more important than a fast release schedule. After all, if you take yourself out of commission entirely, there won’t be anything at all! Other than that, I’m sure you’d be able to find fans at cons who would be more than delighted to help haul your stuff around for part of any given day. Hell, if I was there, I’d offer to help you out for most of the con. Anyways, I hope this all works out!

I’ll say one thing in praise of the Essentials books: They’re small. They’re handy, lightweight, paperbacks that cost half of what typical RPG books do. You might think I”m being sarcastic, but I’m not, this is actually a really smart design decision and I’m amazed that companies haven’t figured out sooner that huge, dictionary-like rules manuals intimidate new players and that a lightweight, streamlined alternative is much more appealing.

As far as health problems go, I’m familiar with the kind of anxiety you get from those sometimes ambiguous medical tests, from having a problem that no one can seem to really diagnose, from having to mix and match medications (some of which can just knock you right the fuck out, especially the first few weeks), and wondering whether you’ll ever just be able to go back to normal. He’s lucky that he has a lot of fans and people who are supportive of him. I hope it all comes together for him soon.

Spoony, you shouldn’t be drinking soda. I felt like shit all the time when I drank colas all the time, now I quit and I rarely, rarely get sick. Find something to replace soda, or drink it less often or you’re likely to get diabeetus if you drink them daily. Don’t want to try and scare you into being healthy or anything, just saying, soda will make you feel like crap.

A lot of messages read like RIP Spoony. You’ll be fine. Cousin had the same thing you describe, in HS. He is fine, wife kids, and even plays hockey ever now and then.

Just listen to a lot of Queen’s “The show must go on.” And change the words.

    The show must go on
    Inside Spoony’s heart is breaking
His green screen may be flaking (or wrinkling?)
But his smile still stays on.
Whatever happens, he’ll leave it all to chance
    Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for? …
    Spoony’s never giving in
On – with the show –
Spoony’ll top the bill, Spoony’ll overkill
He has to find the will to carry on
    On with the –
    On with the show –
    The show must go on…

    Get well Noah.

That’s crazy, my group just tried out Burning Wheel for the second time tonight and I’ve had my eye on a copy of Eclipse Phase for the last two months or so. Weird coincidence. I really want to love Burning Wheel a lot of the concepts in it are really exciting and most of it worked really well, but the combat system brought the game to a grinding halt, it ended up being really unwieldy.

    • http://twitter.com/scullkrusher D.A. “Scullkrusher” Bailey

You’re not supposed to use the “Fight!” rules every time you encounter a fight. Fight! is just for special combat significant to the adventure. For all other fights you’re suppose to use the “Bloody Vs.” rules which is pretty much straight rolling. The better your combat, the more dice you roll, the better your chances of successes are. In fact only about the first 85 pages of the BW core is made up of the main rules. Everything past that (Duel of Wits, Range & Cover, Fight!, even Magic is considered optional) are special rules that you’re suppose to implement on special occasions. Also suggest the GM rather than killing off players who lose a fight to rather have them wounded and captured. This offers more opportunities for the player’s beliefs to be challenged and get redemption for losing.

Try these suggestions and see if your game goes smoother. I know it sounds like a corny metaphor but like the wheels of a car Burning Wheel runs smoother when you start in first gear and go higher, rather than start in the highest gear first.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Amanda-Holloway/100000776203309 Amanda Holloway

Wow, this is some serious stuff. However, I would suggest that you don’t become complacent with the drugs that the doctors prescribed to you. Don’t get me wrong, they’ll greatly help you, but they could also hurt you. My dad had a similar situation with his heart, only his heart beat was irregular to the point of where the lower chambers wouldn’t alleviate all of the blood, and he’d have a small pool that would always remain. The drugs he was prescribed only seemed to make his condition worse to the point of where he almost died.

I don’t want to scare you at all SpoonyOne, but you should probably think of other ways to keep your heart rate to a minimum when you are required to perform strenuous tasks. One thing I would suggest would be to regularly check your heart rate/pulse. If you feel that your heart rate is elevating to the point of where you feel faint, try these steps:

    1. taking deep, slow breaths at regular intervals
    2. stopping what you are doing for a few minutes
    3. slowing your work pace to a comfortable/easy one
    4. rest/relax for a bit

When you’re not doing strenuous activity, yet you feel stressed from the foreboding task list that still looms over your head try some of these to help you relax:

    1. Have someone gently massage your neck/back/shoulders/scalp (may run the risk of falling asleep)
    2. light some candles of a fragrance that isn’t too overbearing
    3. play some relaxing music
    4. read a book
    5. take a long, hot bath

Well, I hope this helped in some way. You’re in my prayers Spoony, I hope you feel better soon. :] Take care.

No one’s mentioned it yet that I’ve seen, but I’m pretty sure that mystery girl that you found is Terri Poch (aka Taylor Made, Terri Power, and in her WWE run Tori). She was in the WWE from ’98 to ’01 and was one of the four trainers of MTV’s Tough Enough reality show for season 1, the masked ninja that helped Raven get wins in his last WWE run, part of the X-Pac/Kane fued (as the love interest of both), one of the divas Bubba Ray Dudley wanted to put through a table when he was doing that gimmick, and had actually debuted playing the same obsessed fan gimmick that Mickie James would later debut with (only obsessed with Sable instead of Trish).

    On and for those interested:

Eclipse Phase is a pen & paper roleplaying game of post-apocalyptic transhuman conspiracy and horror.

An “eclipse phase” is the period between when a cell is infected by a virus and when the virus appears within the cell and transforms it. During this period, the cell does not appear to be infected, but it is.

Players take part in a cross-faction secret network dubbed Firewall that is dedicated to counteracting “existential risks” threats to the existence of transhumanity, whether they be biowar plagues, self-replicating nanoswarms, nuclear proliferation, terrorists with WMDs, net-breaking computer attacks, rogue AIs, alien encounters, or anything else that could drive an already decimated transhumanity to extinction.

It looks interesting, I’ll have to pick it up and take a closer look. The description sort of reminds me of CoC’s Delta Green setting.

Your condition kind of reminds me of how some people react to asthma. In that people who don’t have it don’t really understand it. I’m not sure they even can because form there perspective it seems that you are fine, until suddenly you are not. People often think that you are just avoiding work but really I just don’t wont to have an attack, it’s not fun. One of the things that really flairs it up is cigarette smoke and I was really taken back one day when my friend declared “it doesn’t smell THAT bad” as if the smell had anything to do with it.

I hope the medication works out for you. Take it easy man.

I’m not sure what else to say, other than I hope you are feeling better soon, and that I’m really looking forward to the Ultima 6 review. That’s one of my personnel favourites.

Fuck, that’s just lame, how the people around you react. Okay, I know it might be hard to understand but… nggh. Damn I’m so lucky to have really understanding and supportive friends… (I don’t have asthma or anything like what Spoony has, but I’ve been sick lately too and sometimes it takes a lot of patience from my friends to understand that it’s not that I’m being lazy or not wanting to hang out with them but I’m just really, honestly too tired for anything more than… light walking. And I really don’t want to tire myself too much and end up passing out in some really inconvenient place like the stairs or something.)

The mystery woman from the WWE game is Miss Jackie, one of the Season 2 winners of Tough Enough. She’s married to Charlie Haas now, for some odd reason, and she used to manage Rico, the guy that managed Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo when they were doing their homosexual gimmick. I wish I didn’t remember any of those people….

The DDi character builder, which you mention in the beginning of the second vlog, is currently getting a lot of flak strictly because of
    1) It’s being moved to Online Only, making it less accessible to players and DMs.

    2) The functionality is extremely limited in the web version at this time. You cannot create customized characters or borrow elements from other D&D settings like you could in the software version for example.

    3) Exporting you character to be shared by your group or GM cannot happen at this time.

    4) Your characters are held on server. Outside of possible legal ownership issues, you must have an active account to view them and will be deleted in 12 months.

    5) All the lies. We were told there were so many delays with Dark Sun and D&D essentials in the character builder because of software issues and tweaks that needed to be made but they were coming. We were also told that a week or so before the announcement of the web based tools that it wouldn’t replace the software. It did and both these two marquee items will be exclusive and you can’t incorporate these into your current game characters thanks to issue #2.

As Spoony might say: “Enjoy your rental”

Okay, what? Your release schedule is fine. You still put out more content than most people affiliated with TGWTG and its partners. If feeling like you ‘owe’ us content while your seriously ill is making you stress, Noah, for god’s sake DON’T. Rest, get your medicine to you, get situated on it, come back when you’re feeling better. I’ll just be over here rewatching your LPs and the hours of content you’ve already put out.

Best wishes, Noah. Please feel better.

Sorry to hear about the condition noah, I’ve got the same problem after dealing with the developing end of the industry for a few years. It’s really really hard to always keep your heart rate and excitement levels in check ALL the time. I had to have an MRI for my issue, but it’s exactly what you got happening. Lots of meditating shit helps, as silly as it sounds. Good luck, don’t die on us!

I’ve had a history of heat exhaustion and passing out, so can totally relate towards how terrifying it is to pass out like that. I can only imagine how bad it was when you compound it with chest pains, but man you’ve gutted through it and seem to be in a really positive place of mind right now. Best wishes and rest up!

Wow, Spoony man…please take all the time you need. Going to relate this to Highlander as a fellow fan; there was a point made on the TV series I forget the context but it went something like this. If a pre-Immortal was ever a true talent in an area (for example Beethoven) were to become an Immortal they would lose any gifts they have been given. True genius is an apparent human trait, l guess. I had serious health problems in the past as well; some which doctors could not diagnose or treat. I am true believe in the power of will but know when to slow down. Your fans are loyal and patient. Best wishes

With regard to AD&D and Goblins, because of the simplicity of the stat blocks, one could easily slap extra hit dice onto the generic goblin to level him up, or in 3rd/3.5 give him class levels. If anything the 4e system of templates seems more restrictive and clunky. I do this all the time when I DM 3.5 and OD&D. Of course there should be indicators as to the bad-assitude of the creatures you fight and a DM who relies on your expectation that a goblin is a goblin is a goblin, just to trick you, is a dick.

    • http://twitter.com/steelabjur Clinton Clark Napper

In AD&D you could give class levels to creatures too.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=557020557 William Staples

True, though I recall it being a little harder and less intuitive than 3E.

  • Anonymous

Oh yeah, I almost had one of those incidents once… I was just so stressed out at the time and was playing tennis (to relieve stress) for far too long, and eventually I just… couldn’t stand up, and I tried to lean against a wall because the LAST thing I wanted to do was to lay down and pass out, possibly die. I could feel my heart feeling like it was about to just stop, and it was an utterly terrifying feeling.

The thought of facing that every day– and not from strenuous exercise and stress, but just from basic activities in life– scares me. Just the THOUGHT of it does… nevermind actually having such a condition. So honestly, you’re being far braver than I imagine I would be in your position, and I hope you get better, hope the medication works on you.

Good luck man. Even if you stopped producing videos so that you could live a healthy life, I wouldn’t mind. You’ve provided entertainment and joy in my– and many other peoples’– lives, and I wouldn’t hold it against you for you to take a break, no matter how long, to stay healthy. Do what’s best for you and your life.

Spoony, sounds like you might have HOCM: hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. HOCM affects young males and can present as sudden cardiac death (stories of athletes who drop dead). If the beta blocker you’re taking (Coreg aka Carvedilol) doesn’t control your symptoms, there are more invasive procedures that can provide symptom relief, like pacemaker placement or even surgery to resect the overgrowth of your septum. Obviously, those invasive procedures are not without risk of significant complications.

Liked the part with the lid. You seemed like a childishly fascinated 70-year-old — in the best way possible. Gives you a warm and cozy feeling inside. And damn, be sure to take your time, bro. Your mere hospitilization, let alone death, would have a humongous impact on thousands of people — a bigger impact than if you just stopped making so many videos, I’m sure. I am certain everyone would understand if you took whatever time you needed, and I’m sure most of us would stay tuned. But still, I don’t think making vlogs is too hard on you, so even if you kept going, but only doing that, I think everyone would be pleased with their Spoony dose. At least I would. As much as I like all of your videos, the vlogs are the most interesting to me. You can ramble for literally an hour about one thing, never really repeating yourself. It’s most impressive.

Echoing everyone sentiments, once again, hoping you’ll get better soon, Spoony. Also hoping the new medication won’t hit you too hard. I’ve been on a few for various conditions and some will just knock you flat on your back until your body adjusts. Just… hoh geeze, don’t die! D:

IRT your reaction over the WWE book… OMG!! Your expressions and mindblown moments… hilarious! I don’t know who any of those guys are, and I’m still pretty newbish when it comes to DnD stats and stuff, but you just doing a quadruple-take over the ladies’ 18 charisma slayed me. And then you were laughing so hard you practically doubled over… admit I actually got a little scared that you were going to work yourself up too much and pass out again, but thankfully, that didn’t happen.

Make sure Scarlett takes good care of you! Even when you’re sick and weary, you’re still a riot to watch.

Don’t worry about it. I never could see why people have been complaining so much about how much you’ve been releasing lately. They should have enough faith in you to assume you have a good reason (this one just so happens to be a damn good one). I’ll be content with watching whatever you put out, whenever you put it out and if it’s multiple great videos in a row then FUCKIN A that’s great!!! I’m excited for Highlander: Source. The new five-point alignment system is bullshit. I really hated it when I first saw it in the 4th Edition handbook and it was like “Lawful Good is more Good than Good!” Fuck that. I tolerated it because I thought that alignment would be purely cosmetic in 4th Edition, but this new stuff you’re unwrapping just throws that out the window. I don’t actually play DnD all that much, I just collected the books, but if I did play, this would probably be the one thing that keeps me out of 4th edition and Essentials.

Oh, and get well soon. I feel for you. I mean, I have a condition, but it’s purely mental, so I don’t think it can compare to yours.

-It’s probably a good thing that you’re not into Magic. I can’t even imagine how expensive it would be to buy shit for both Magic and tabletop games like DnD. I never really played Magic, either, so I guess I’ve enjoyed both of them without spending much money.

-Know Your Roleplaying Game. I almost expected you to do one of those hitting yourself spots from your LPs. Bleh. :P

I’ma go listen to Voices again. That was a good song.

    • http://twitter.com/Thiefofhearts Thiefofhearts

It’s not that “Lawful Good is more good than Good”, it never was. Good and Lawful Good are just two flavors of good that are wide enough to be quickly defined as broad character viewpoints.

As for the paladin stuff, one of the reasons why LG was no longer a requirement for paladins was to avoid this “you lose your powers” garbage by getting in an absurd game of semantics. The other reason was to broaden the amount of gods a paladin could be sponsored by. A Paladin of the Raven Queen would not work off of the same code of conduct as one from Bahaumet. Seriously, if the best they could come up with is a “you must be LG to be this type of Pally and remain that way or else” then house rule the restriction.

      • Anonymous

Maybe I’m remembering it wrong, then. When I looked at 4th Ed alignments, I remember seeing it as a linear scale with five points; LG was at one end and CE was at the other. It really annoyed me at the time, seeing four other viable alignments that have been a part of D&D tradition for years get dropped just like that.

Spoony to comment on your question of the purpose of the book you touched on it but it seems you don’t get the idea. In my group I have someone thats always some type of warlock or necromancer and one that plays druids all the time. The rules are the same to help the DM and give a player the same rules but with classes they would prefer rather than going out and buying book 1 and book 2 and having to spend more money.

I would play the hell out of that WWE RPG. Just out of curiosity

Not to be a nitpicker, but when Spoony was briefly talking about the 4e Hexblade, and how when it came out it marked the beginning of 4e having too many classes for his taste, am I the only one that noticed that Hexblade was never a 4e class? Like, ever? The Warlock was, but Warlock came out in the original 4e PHB. I realize Spoony probably just got confused, or meant to reference something else, so I’m not harping on him for his incorrectness or anything. I just found his comment odd, given that he used the non-existent Hexblade as a specific example for displeasure with 4e.

Hey Spoony, all things considered (and as a role-model of mine) I’m much happier to know you’re getting medicine and medical care for your problems and taking it easy since you’re not feeling well than possibly overworking yourself just to keep up the rate of material you put out. Most of your reviews are worth the wait IMHO even if I disagree with your points. I hope the new medication helps with you condition.

  • Anonymous

When you started posting things less frequently, I just assumed that you had a prolonged case of stomach flu. I didn’t know just how much of a serious health issue was hanging over your head for every video and audio clip I’ve ever seen of you.

I hope that the new medication drastically improves the quality of your life.

It takes a lot to try and hide the affliction that Spoony’s been dealing with, and I want to salute and thank him for all of his efforts to date. I cant even imagine how difficult that it must be to make the decision to press forward and continue work that unintentionally worsens your condition– no matter how much you love to do it. It also took an equal amount of difficulty to share with everyone the seriousness of the affliction.

It was sobering for me to hear. Someone so full of energy and personality battling weakness and illness was able to produce some material that has made me laugh during times that have been tough for me. Of course, had we known the extent of Spoony’s situation beforehand, it might have changed how we viewed the experience… and I think he knew that, which is a reason that he decided to keep things on the DL.

Like the rest of you, I wish Spoony a speedy recovery and hope that the new medication allows for a release of the restrictions and difficulties that he’s been facing both on- and off-camera.

Hey Spoony, dont work yourself into an early grave! To deny the world of anymore Dr.Insano would be a crime. Seriously though, I hope you get better, I always love watching your reviews or thoughts on things, your so passionate and charismatic that your reviews turn out to be super entertaining to watch. For real dude, no more Final Fantasy X untill you get your new meds, I know your heart almost erupts with frustration at the mere mention of that game. Take it easy, I dont care if you only put out one review every 3 or 4 months, just as long as your alive to keep making them. One question I do have is, are you, Dr.Insano or any other of your characters going to be in Linkaras Lord Vyce story? Linkara seems to have bubbled off into his own universe and is just using only his characters, it would be cool if you or maybe even Doug or someone came on his show for the Lord Vyce story. Anyways, rest up and chill out Spoony, take care.

As for the tokens, I’ve actually run into the same problem with dungeon tiles. It’s just frustrating to think about how to organize them to the point where they’d be readily accessible. The tokens in some ways pose more of a problem. I’d say a tackle box is probably going to be your best bet. What I’ve currently got are ziplock sandwich baggies with the tokens in them, though at this point, I’ve sorted them into the enemies and PC’s (plain and gold perimeters, basically). You could probably divide it up even further by type, but at that point, a tackle box makes more sense. One thing that I’ve found immensely frustrating is that the normal sized tokens are all -just- too big for quarter sized coin rolls, which would otherwise make perfect storage options for them. Other than that, your only option to keep things moving quickly is to plan ahead and set aside all of the tokens and tiles you’ll need on any given day, and that’s a level of planning that I often find restrictive, and is rather time consuming.

Of course, at the moment, I’ve got it rough because I game with a club on a nearby campus, and the closest place for me to park is 15 minutes walk away. I’m still trying to figure out a way to get from my car to the game with the gear I’ll need without killing my back or shoulders. Doesn’t help that I’ve got much the same addiction that you do, Spoony XD When I dug out my old D&D books, I was amazed at just how many I actually had.

Still, a lot of it comes down to micro-managing your organization system, either for pregame or in-game accessibility. Also, when you mention that the dungeon tiles are double sided, and how that makes it hard to find anything, I really have to agree. I mean, from the perspective of organizing them, it makes it tough to make a call. Sure, on one side you might have a nice statue, while on the other side, it might have a spiral staircase. Which category would you put something like that in?

Hey Spoony, med student here. Haven’t read through all the other comments, but if this will help, I can try to say what’s going on with your heart in an easier to understand way. From what you’re describing (and the medication you mentioned you’re on), you sound like you have a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. That just means the walls of your ventricles (the “pumps” of your heart) are thicker than normal. Coreg is essentially a drug that inhibits both beta and alpha 1 receptors, which slows your heart rate down, and opens up your blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow. I think you mentioned you were on atenolol? That’s essentially a more narrow-focused version of the drug you’re taking now. You should do better on it.

Out of morbid curiosity, what’s your current dose? 10 mg tablet once a day?

I think that the word Spoony is looking for is Echocardiogram. I have to get that done every five years because of fears of hereditary heart disease.

Perhaps the next time you go to a convention, consider getting your hands on a Segway to move around; you wont exert yourself and fans will be able to spot you better.

I do not get your enjoyment of Essentials. Every Essentials book they release damages my opinion of Wizards even more. Don’t want to get into a big argument about that so I’ll stop there.

What I would like to do is comment on and fuel your desire to buy more niche RPG books. Eclipse Phase. Good stuff. Not quite the Cthulhu-punk you seemed to be hoping for. The horror element in that game is all about what kinds of horrible things are possible to do to a person when your consciousness has been converted into a digital format. Sure there are giant god-machine AI whom grew so large so fast they completely wiped out most life on Earth in their desire to get out there in the stars and do whatever it is Machine-Gods do. The Cthulhu-punk game you are looking for is Cthulhutech. Essentially one part Mythos and one part Neon Genesis Evangelion. Where humankind, upon the discovery of Lovecraftian horrors, tries to fight them with giant robots. Fun stuff, good fluff so long as you can stand the fact there is a tiny glimmer of hope in a Lovecraft story. System sucks though. Dice Poker. That’s all there is to say about that.

Now, I would goddamn love it if you have some of the Warhammer 40k RPGs some attention. If there was ever a more ridiculous or over the top RPG setting as that. Where humanity is one giant fascist theocracy where hundreds of trillions of human beings toil away for their god and empire in the most oppressive and bloody regime possible. However, humanity only became this way essentially as a defense mechanism because of how harsh the galaxy is. If there was a giant war-machine binding the human realms together, they’d all be picked apart by the horrible aliens and daemons that lurk the stars. This is a universe where the only means of traveling faster than light is to take a shortcut through HELL. There’s Dark Heresy where you play the definition of a mook in the service of His God-Emperor’s Holy Inquisition. Your life is worth about nothing and maybe if you stomp on some heretics you’ll get the attention you need to get your guys some gear to make sure you don’t die a horrible and violent death. There’s Rogue Trader where you play a Privateer Prince given authority to go outside the bounds of the empire with a ship and do as you please. Did I mention that ships in this setting are kilometers long, hold tens of thousands of people and have the ability to obliterate all life from the surface of a planet if you really want to? All that nice gear probably isn’t going to save you from getting your face eaten by an alien though. And lastly there is Deathwatch where you play a genetically engineered warrior-monk killing machine in power armor designed to face the most horrible things in the galaxy. You are capable of fighting hundreds of regular people at a time and only the most dangerous life forms in the galaxy can even hope to scratch you.

Hope you have some disposable income, because I think I did a good enough job selling all those systems.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_74LX4DHNUVVERCHVYP75MYAMO4 Joshua

You mentioned that your blood pressure was high, that is what’s causing your heart problems. High blood pressure means your heart has to work harder to push blood against said pressure, which leads to the hypertrophy mentioned by another poster. A nutritionist came in to talk with our class, and he said that we suggest ‘lean meats, low-fat dairy, whole grains and veggies’ to patients who want help with their blood pressure.

Get well soon, man – I’ll be praying for you. That medication the doc has you on should help limit how hard your heart works and should help keep you feeling better. You should definitely tell him if you ever have trouble sleeping lying down, as that would indicate that things are getting worse.

I remember that being part of what derailed the monster campaign I was in. We ALSO got attacked by regular goblins of the fourth level. Killed one of us. The other people in the party tried to parley and get away, but wouldn’t ya know it… I was the guy with low intellect, low wisdom, and a worshipper of chaos to boot. So it would have been out of his character to not start a fight, which led to our demise. And I wasn’t blamed in the least for it. =P Great times. Friggin’ goblins.

I hope that medicine works well for you. Any improvement is good improvement. Enjoy the time off. =)

Hey Spoony, glad to hear you’re feeling better. I noticed you’re drinking diet cola. I’ve heard many bad things about how aspartame can have negative effects on the heart. Aspartame is the key sugar replacement for most of those diet drinks, so you might want STOP drinking that garbage altogether for a period of time, and then see how you feel after. As a fellow nerd, I know how our type of diet can be unhealthy. You might want to stop drinking soft drinks altogether. Cut back on the caffeine, sugar, preservatives and msg. Start drinking lots of water, eat whole foods, and get some light exercise and I bet you’ll feel much better and It may even help you recover from your heart problems. Best of luck to you, and be weary of taking sketchy medications over good old fashioned exercise and will power.

I am both with and against you for the whole monsters debate thing. What I always did and still do is collect monster manuals like mad. I have the ADND Manuals, fiend folio, some OGL monster manuals. I use them all and come up with my own stats depending on the party and yes, the level needed. You should never feel limited by what WoTC Hands you simply because you are meant to expand on it. Which is why fourth turned me off for awhile because they prettey much demanded in a way that you only use their campaigns and not make up your own thing.

I hope you get better, Spoony. I was wondering, were the pills during FF10 related to this?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ryan-Hadley/1504681506 Ryan Hadley

Well Spoony no matter what you decide to do if you feel you should take it a lot easier in reviews and not stress yourself by ranting but take a decently calm approach to things I am behind ya 100 percent! I hope things get regulated for you but take as much time as possible to recover. My sister believes it is hyper tension I would not know but hopefully the pills will keep you regulated. Also for anxiety I know you said it is not the cause but it will most likely cause further issues with your heart I find it best to meditate with some mood music or play a distracting yet calm game just to keep anxiety levels in check. Many ways to handle it even a hot shower can help. I would not recommend anxiety pills especially with the other pills your on now I am not sure how it would react but still hope everything goes smoothly for you. Yeah I seem to have rambled off myself heh…anyway Spoony you are and have been one of my favorite all time reviewers ever. Been following you for years and there is no one like you. Mix a great sense of humor with intelligent points and a distinctive personality and the Spoony one emerges like a crazy science experiment gone right by Dr. Insano. Anyway lol take care and relax! No matter how long it takes your well being is the most important thing!

Spoony, I really enjoy your reviews and rants, but several of us are confused by your recent behavior. You seem to have lost your “spark” as it were. Yesturday I watched a few of your vlogs from 2008, and then compared them to recent ones you’ve done. I feel you’ve simply turned your passion into a series of deadlines to be met. When something you love becomes a hassel, your simply doing a job. You try to do too much with your work and it’s not treating you kindly. I’m refering to your ever increasing eleberate videos where your using the green screen and such. Your stated before that the lights are not helping your condition. In that case DONT USE THE GREEN SCRENE!!! Do you think any of us come to your site to see what tricks your going to pull off in your next video? We come here to see you and listen to your crazy ways. I personally would be content to have you do Vlogs till the cows come home. Forget the whole scripted review structure you’ve set for yourself; and just ramble on about the subject at hand. Your good at that sort of thing, which is evident in your commentary videos. I just hope you can relax and try to go back to a more basic time, when things were simplier. I think you’d be a happier man.

How did I miss this video before? I hope you get well soon, man. I’m sure the rest of your fans would rather see you take a short break and get well rather than work yourself sick. Your videos are worth the wait; your health is more important.

    Hi Spoony,

Sorry to hear you’ve been really unwell. Obviously you have a lot of support and anyone that cares about you is totally OK with you taking a break. We understand man. I understand why you wouldn’t want your fans seeing the “bad times”, some of us are shocked that you’ve been feeling this bad and it sounds serious, so some serious props for keeping your chin up through this tough time.

I really enjoy your videos but you know what, dude don’t stress yourself out or feel you have to post so many videos. As someone who blogs myself, I find writing blogs and watching them almost therapy from the bad stuff that happens in life, and maybe I’m right thinking this is the same for you too?

You rule Spoony. Just keep your health a priority.

Take it easy, man. It is amazing that you’ve done so much while you’ve been fighting illness, I never even noticed you having problems in any of your videos; but as much as I enjoy and appreciate all of the free entertainment you produce, you need to put your own health first. Don’t be afraid to take a break, for as long as you need; you’re under no obligations to meet any kind of output schedule. Here’s hoping your new medication works well, and that you feel better soon.

One or two sodas a day is still too much bro. I drink maybe 1 or 2 sodas a month. You realize that 2 sodas is around 400-700 calories a day, all packed full of that nasty corn syrup and shit right? Not the best idea when you already have a health condition.

But you got a condition, you’re stressed out, take it easy man. I seen this happen to a lot of people, dont run your ass into the ground, i want to be watching your bullshit 5 years from now.

Take a break, loose some weight ’cause you’re getting some jowls, take a nice walk for an hour or two a day, maybe start drinking some tea instead of those sodas, engage in some light sodomy. Should clear things up.

Maybe you wouldn’t be sick so often if you went outside and ran around the block every once in a while. And lay off the fast food. You’ve chunked up quite a bit since you started the Spoony Experiment.

Fantastic to hear you’re still trucking, Spoony. I actually think there’s something wrong with my heart, too, though it’s nowhere near as debilitating as your condition. I just get random, extremely uncomfortable thumps in my chest whenever I’m fatigued, hungry, or have a lot of excess energy (caffeine). Weird. No passing out or tightness, though.

Anyway, I hope the medication works out for you. It is indeed amazing that you’ve managed to do so much with that problem, especially considering how much you strain yourself with your onscreen rages and rantings. I wish you well and look forward to seeing tons more of your comedic genius at work.

You asked about storage systems… what I do with things like these is I have boxs or cases roughly the same size as them so they can’t slip out of order and I put them in a rough level sets with level 1 through say 4 or 5 in one case in roughly that order, then 5 or 6 through 10 or so. I’ve never used D&D counters and it looks like there are a lot of them so I would probs need to come up with a variation of that but that would be my rough system. You only have to sort them once cos you can just put them roughly back in around the right place and they won’t be to hard to find next time.

I’m in no way a doctor, but I’ll make two suggestions that might fix you up much quicker, and be good for the long term.

Drink more water, and I mean lots of it man. One glass as soon as you wake up, one before you go to sleep, and one with each meal. Lose the sodas, I haven’t had a soda in almost a year, and now just taking a sip of one they taste repulsive.

And second, try some meditation for 15 minutes a day, and slowly increase to about an hour. It seems like a lot, but once you get used to it you’ll find that doing both of these will balance out a lot of things in you, including your heart.

    Best wishes and health
Feel free to ask if you have any questions on that stuff.

    Hey Spoony,

I wanted to mention that I had similar problems to you. My heart would get all screwy for no apparent reason, going from high BPM to low BPM in an instant, like it had no rhythm. I found that by avoiding artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame, I didn’t have those events at all. I’ve been avoiding that crap for over 7 years now and haven’t had a single episode.

If you are like me, that may be the cause. I suggest if you drink or eat a diet that has any exposure to that to try eliminating it completely from your diet. Hope this helps!

Having a new Essentials book double as a Player’s Handbook could actually be very useful. I know I’ve been at sessions of D&D, and other games, where only having one copy of a core book slowed us down because two or three people needed to look stuff up at the same time.

I have ventricular septal defect myself among other physiological problems and if I had your dietary lifestyle and lack of sleep and exercise, I’d probably have as much of a problem with everyday life as you have, if not more. But since I make the effort to eat well (…whatever that means for my individual physiology really), sleep enough, and follow a fitness routine that works for me, I end-up with such great health, well-being and fitness that I rival even professional athletes (since I do similar stuff, which I so happen to like).

This isn’t even about “you gotta eat your veggies and do aerobic exercise 5 times per day and so on and so forth” (hell, the one-size fits all “perfect” way of living is complete BS, since everyone’s different and there’s also no point of being healthy and fit if you’re miserable). This is about trying new and gradually better ways of living and doing what works best for you long-term that lead to maximizing and balancing your own happiness, health/well-being and performance.
