Feeling brave tonight? Wizards of the Coast built a dungeon square in the middle of the expo floor.

Spoony was the one who got me interested in D&D with his review of the Essentials line. I have been attending every encounters night at my RPG store Dueling Grounds since Keep on the Borderlands A Season of Serpents week 13. Now I am reading up the Dungeons Master’s book to maybe start DMing soon

    A New Spoony vid!?

    Be…Sure…To…Drink…Your…Ovaltine…?

Spoony, you got me hooked on Reb Brown. I got a fever, and the only cure is more Reb.

Alright, Spoony, you’re still alive. And as time goes on you’ll get over what’s-her-name? But I saw you are still
wounded. I could see the pangs looking at the video. Did his hat, or perhaps the dragon delve a little too deep?
You should have asked him to remove his hat, and taken down the dragon and not even touched the box. You should remove that color from your life, and say the only color you see is “black!” – Hell, paint everything black!

Stay strong brother, and best of luck to you on all your future endeavors! We (the anyonmous users, internet white-knights, tolls, the unemployed, the ones who still live at home, and your more moderate fans) are here for you.
Although, I am not sure what consolation that brings, when you think of it.

    Namaste.
    P.S. – AD&D 2nd Edition4LIFE

Dungeons and Dragons is an amazing game. I play 3.5 because it’s the most customizable, though it gets very convoluted very easily.

as most people said ot me, if you like 3.5 but feel it gets very convoluted or confusing try pathfinder. It’s 3.5 compatable and considered a unofficial 3.75

To be brutally honest, Virtual Table is far too long overdue. 4e came out just as I was finishing college, saying goodbye to a group I’d been running for a year and a half. I was elated at the prospect of having the virtual table, and I rushed out to buy the 4e books when they came out… only to discover that the -promised- content was being delayed. And delayed further. And delayed even further. It was only last year that I found a gaming club the next city over, which was the first time I ever got to use the 4e books. We need better networking for gamers, and from experience with gaming clubs, even Encounters won’t be enough for the serious D&D players. I’ve spent the last four months recruiting new players for my game at this club, having to bring in new people almost every session. That’s no way to run a -proper- D&D game. Maybe once Virtual Table is out, I can re-capture a reliable group experience. I love WOTC and all, but after four years, they’re going to have to work to regain my faith in them. We’ll see how VT works when it comes out… who knows, it might even be here before next year.

Aww man I pictured something totally more awesome when you said the words virtual table. Like…special LCD table and you would roll these special mini LCD sided dice and everyone could see the result via their tables, and had a built in webcam and mic…damn you D&D always stimulating my imagination

Because this is what D&D really needs right now… more accessibility and card shit!

So… is it better than RP Tools? Is it as free as RP Tools? What features does it have that make it better than the free products out there made by fans? Can it be used with more systems than just 4th Edition?

Oh wait, time to interview without asking any tough questions. Nice try Spoony.

The only thing it has up on the current free tools is the ability to directly import data from the Online CB, the upcoming online monster catalog, and the (possible) ability to have adventures and maps from the online magazines put in.

heh, cards, really? This sounds like a rip off, of the already preasent in pathfinder here: http://paizo.com/store/byCompany/p/paizoPublishingLLC/gameMastery/itemPacks

And the VT I’ve been waiting for ages. I was hoping that it would broaden my horizon of gaming as I have limited access and England really isn’t that good of a gaming area in my opinion.

    Basically it seems that:
    1. VT hasn’t come out so they’re scraping the barrel and stealing other ideas
    2. the picture spoony showed of VT looks no more advanced than maptools which is FREE. I remember the 3D look when it was announced by at the moment and that appears to be the only thing going for it. Besides that, it’s all very unimpressive, though the live-sized playing looked funny.

It’s not that I don’t like D&D anymore… …It’s just that I like Pathfinder Fantasy Roleplaying a lot more. And I think Wizards of the Coast is just going all out, shilling out so many “cool” accessories for the game, that are really just superfluous.

I don’t blame you. I really lost hope in WOTC with their performance as of late and have been playing more Pathfinder and Sundered Skies, myself.

not to mention the VT pic we saw looks like Maptools which you can get for free. So it has taken them around 6 – 7 years to release something taht at the moment looks like a program you can get for free online? There’s probably a version to make it 3D like the first teasers we were given.

The cards look just like these ones at the paizo store which have been out for at least 5 years: http://paizo.com/store/byCompany/p/paizoPublishingLLC/gameMastery/itemPacks

Any idea where we may be able to pick up those ridiculously large d20s? Wizards should market those as well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/aron.marczylo Aron Marczylo

heh, hell yeah I’d love to buy that just for fun and to roll. Wouldn’t use it in any DMing capacity though unless I wanted to be a dick and destroy the figurines.

    Ooh. Nice.

I remember back when me and my friends thought Neverwinter Nights would be the solution to our organizational problems. How we’d theoretically just take the experience online and…yeah.

Didn’t quite pan out that way.

“Promoting”. I already battling their WPN service for two month or so in order to get permission to run DnD Encounter.
With each month I warm up to Essentials, MV is just awesome, RC gives you up to date rules, but I still don’t like class books, it’s a step back in my opinion. And why there are no errata for 4 month already? It’s not like there were no changes, some of them even posted on their site, like new DC for rolls, they acknowledged some mistakes like missing line from “prone” condition, it’s just an editing error, but they still do nothing to correct this. Are they pushing Essentials by hurting their main product?
Virtual Tabletop, at last. I expect good things from this. Fortune cards? Bullcrap, like PCs are not strong enough already, most this cards are just variation of “you get +x to rolldamage” or just reprint or some powers(re-roll missed attack, sounds familiar?), +1 for each blooded ally in 5 squares, +2 to roll, combat advantage, no friendly fire, your x to damage if enemy is *condition*, at least they are not mandatory, thanks god. Fan made Drama Cards 100 times better, they have some interesting effects like “all or nothing”: flip the coin, on heads treat it like you rolled 20, on tails – 1. Or “coldlock”: use this card when you fail bluff, diplomacy or intimidate check against a single target, target is unconscious(save ends) .

I’ve played in the encounters program. It wasn’t my scene. It felt a bit like prostitution going to a store and buying a DM for 2 hours, and then I ended up with a pretty bad group. The pregenerated character with little options so I can’t flex my munchkin bones, and as 2d as the card their printed on so I’ve got no room for deep RP. I’ll admit it may work for some people but I rather prefer the meatup.com way about it. whatever.

Key is to get people into RP. If the encounters program does it mores the better. If the pseudoLARP works that’s cool too. If someone picks up a copy of kill puppies for Satan and can’t stop laughing at it I heartily approve. The key is that people enjoy the hobby and propagate it. Otherwise I end up with 2 people turning up for a half assed game that no one enjoys.

I’m glad you called them on this near the end Spoony. They promised this 5 years ago. I preordered the books with the expectation that the Virtual Tabletop experience was coming with it. In my mind this was THE reason to upgrade, forget the rules. And none of what they promised was ready. And they took my Gnome Illusionist away from me and they never really gave it back (at least as of a couple of years ago when I last checked.) Oh sure, they have a class called “Illusionist” and a race called “Gnome” but it lost everything I used to like about that race class combo, all the fun, the sheer outlet for my creativity, all in favor of completely locked down powers with an “Illusion” descriptor and prohibitively expensive rituals which are slightly more flexible but still far too limiting.

And then they put the Tiefling in the Players Handbook. I had a hard enough time back when I lived at home trying to convince my parents that DnD wasn’t going to turn me to Satanism. If they’d seen the option to play a Demon-Blooded character in the player’s handbook, they would have burned my books rather than simply requiring me to keep them locked in my car.

I got over DnD so long ago, I’m not bashing those that like it, but I’m tired with the system, White Wolf and GURPS blow too, unfortunately. There are so few good RPG systems out, but I make do with One Roll Engine, Percentile and FATE.

Way to pimp for D&D dude. I know you love the game and hate to harsh your mellow… but God dam I really hate 4th edition. It’s an all right game, and my complaint isn’t so much that it’s turned into a WOW boardgame (although I thinks that’s true) But it’s all so munchkin. I run a gaming club in which one of our members is currently running his 4th ed Keep on the Shadowfell. It’s fun, but it seems like the game is geared toward loot hounds and stat whores. Part of it is that the DM is an IT numbers guy, but I think that the game encourages that type of thinking. And yeah the old argument is it all depends on the type of DM & players, but like I said the mechanics encourage a certain mindset. That and the company doesn’t help either. I mean come on, I can almost hear the suits in the Hasbro boardroom cranking out these money sucking accessories in their pitch meetings: Oooh you know what would sell well? Another book of powers and card sets to go with it. Yeah the kids will shell out more dough for more “options”. Why not, it worked for Magic the Gathering! What are they on now? Players Handbook 27?
