I’d buy any game sold to me by a cute girl with a furry hat, but Vindictus is free-to-play!

Sorry I couldn’t show you more of the gameplay of Vindictus. I couldn’t get much b-roll footage and the handheld stuff didn’t show much.

    Nexon should die

    • http://spoonyexperiment.com The Spoony One

And we have a troll right out of the gate. Congrats.

      • http://twitter.com/PieTranslator Bigg John

Oh, what, someone can’t say that Nexon should die? Spoony…

What if I correct his statement? Will that help?

        Ahem.

        Nexon could die.

Because you know, could and should are two different things.

Can you hear me up there on your high horse? haha It’s more so the fact that the poster in question made a single sentence statement with negative connotations. Instead of voicing a contrary position with examples of his or her dislike of Nexon, they simply made a waste of a comment intended to rile people up instead of creating a positive atmosphere of discussion. I for one would like to know why someone doesn’t like this company and their body of work, since I know little of them.

          • http://twitter.com/PieTranslator Bigg John

Yeah, but it doesn’t mean he can’t.

          • Anonymous

True, I was very hesitant to write my comment because of that very fact.

          • Anonymous

Now now, Bigg John, nobody said he couldn’t say it, least of all Spoony. It is a free internet and he can say whatever he wants. You can say whatever you want and, hell, even I can say whatever I want, regardless of how negative, so long as I don’t violate the law or the rules. For example:

I have it on good authority that THiSGaMeSuX probably molests children.

Now I didn’t say he absolutely did so I am not on the hook for slander (the well place “probably” ensures that) and I certainly don’t need to prove that position or reveal my supposed sources, much as THiSGaMeSuX doesn’t, but the chappo I referred to can respond to me and call me names or burn me with a well thought out retort or simply insult me with a dismissive comment (as Spoony did to him). Such is the nature of comments sections and message boards, after all.

Don’t get mad at Spoony for playing the game, is all I am saying.

I tried Vindictus a few months ago, and I think I had just about the same first reaction you are having. The physics were very impressive, and the action game play was refreshing in an MMO, especially to a long-time WoW veteran like my self. But once you get passed the novelty of it, you realize a few key things.
The combat doesn’t have an amazing amount of depth, all the attacks are mouse controlled, and its just click to combo. Save for maybe one button to throw objects. The environments are extremely limited, there being only one explorable town when I played, consisting of maybe 6 buildings. And it really starts to get grating when you discover Nexon’s policy on micro transactions. To buy cosmetic items, like cool hairstyles or outfits, you must rent them out. As in you only get to use it for a limited amount of time, after witch your hair will revert to a basic style.
Now, I don’t want to sound like I’m just bitching. Me and a few friends did get some legitimate enjoyment out of this game, and I can see it being a good option for casual fun. But if you are looking for any kind of depth, I recommend you look elsewhere.

I downloaded Vindictus a couple of weeks ago, and it’s pretty cool, but it has some problems. It’s not an open world MMO nor is it an instanced world MMO like Guild Wars. It’s a lot like the original Diablo. But the dungeons are small and recycled. You’ll get dozens of quests that force you to go through the same dungeon over and over and over again. Fortunately they’re quite short at about 10 minutes a run. But it get’s grating after a while, and the difficulty can greatly spike if you solo- depending on the mission you choose. You can tear through the entire dungeon without a single sweat but when you get to the last boss you’ll die in one hit.

And like Andrew said the micro-transactions have an expiration date of 30 days. And they’re not cheap either. A single hair change can run for about $2 to $3. Not too bad, but there’s no way I’m gonna pay for that every month. You can earn their Nexon points to buy things by participating in surveys. But I’ve done half a dozen of them, and I’ve yet to be given any points so that system needs some work.

Overall it’s a decent game, especially for being free-to-play, but the micro-transactions are too expensive, the game isn’t very deep or complex, and their external services need a lot work. They’re still new, so I have no doubt they’ll fix these issues eventually, but it’ll serve as a nice distraction for now.

Same as everyone else. It’s the kind of thing that would benefit greatly from being a Pay2Play game. With more variety, this game would be fantastic. They’ve got a lot of ground work down and a huge potential for much more, just a lack of funding I’d imagine.

My only problem is the token system. The more you play it, the more you’re punished. They force you to pay more and more of a limited weekly token pool to participate unless someone pays for you. 50 a week, but after 10 or so dungeons in a day you start paying up to 5 tokens per run.

However.. “Hey guys, I’m running low on tokens for the day, anyone mind spotting me?” is a repeatable quest.

I’m not even kidding when I say this is the God of War of MMOs. It’s so button mashy and everything. Not particularly bad, but neither beginning game nor endgame appeals to me all that much. The story’s pretty well thought out though.

How bout releasing it in Europe ALREADY?!

    • http://www.facebook.com/gabriel.gohr Gabriel Gohr

As far as I´ve seen it, Nexon hasn´t released any of their games in europe (at least the ones I tried, downloaded and failed to launch ;-) ). Another symptom of lacking funds, like Ryan suspected? Global online support and server-infrastructure doesn´t come out of thin air. Yet. ;-)

I really would have liked to give this one a try. Gotta get time killed until GW2 gets released… well, back to GW1 then!

      Best regards!

Nexon is extremely sloppy about releasing content in Europe. So far, only Atlantica (only thanks to the partnership with NDoors), Mabinogi (waaaaay behind in content), Combat Arms and Maple Story have made it outside North America.

Not just that, but Nexon is fond of using very unstable ActiveX to run games, filling their sites with ads and unskippable popup videos, and sticking you with ads even as you quit the game, and since their platforms are quite unstable, you’re going to see a lot of that before you can actually play.

Also, their support is incredibly sloppy, go over to the forums to ask a honest question about a bug or just some troubleshooting advice, most of the time you’ll get forum trolls to answer you, good luck finding any sort of “official” support.

As of now, Vindictus Europe is in closed beta status, which is almost a surprise considering how long it took them to port Mabinogi over…

    Best game ever.

It has little content, the content it does have is recycled, and it feels like a demo of a Korean Diablo clone without any depth.
I’m shocked you gave it any coverage at all to be honest, especialy since the game has been out for months now and isn’t exactly news worthy.

    • Anonymous

I really like the gameplay. It should get some coverage, unlike hyped up games like Dragon Age 2 which (based on the demo I played) I thought had awful gameplay. Unfortunately, you’re right about the lack of variety in level design. …BUT, the same could be said about the Persona games and other likeable games.

This game looks really good, if only it would, you know, work. I’ve tried several times to get this stupid thing working and it just refuses. It’s not becouse I have a crappy PC, becouse I don’t, the thing just refuses to allow me to log into the server, even if I turn off my viras protection software.

The Darkness is in the background. I am really looking forward to the sequel.

    This game sounds pretty cool
