I feel your pain with the flight. I’ve flow to both Ireland and China from the US and I can’t sleep on flights (or really in cars). That really sucked.

Who needs cloths? I mean really.

My sister’s obsessed with Blockus. It’s a great time-killer. I’m not really surprised they use a lot of English, I was in Italy once it and it was a similar situation. I guess English is quickly becoming the Lingua Franca in Europe at least.

Also, I’d love to see those interviews, I bet they’re hilarious.

X-2′s finale will be that big? Oohh… if Ed Glaser’s involved,  you know it’s gotta be the shit.

A shirt with a giant spoon on it?

Yeah, definitely should be selling those. That’s friggin’ brilliant.

    SWEET MORE VIDEOS!
Sounds like it was a good time, I laughed a lot when you were talking about the Water. I remember when I lived in South America I had to do the same thing… though getting them from the tab isn’t the best idea.

I kinda miss flying… I used to do it all the time when I was young going from Brasil to the States and back and forth. I think living like that gives you the ability to fall asleep there. I remember one time I flew from the midwest to cali and I just put my tray down and passed out with my head on the tray. Oh And I’ve had that luggage thing happen a whole lot, which yeah does suck.

I was never able to learn the language in Brasil for some reason so I know what you’re talking about with the language thing as well.

Gotta love Air Conditioning, I hate the cold… unless it’s from an AC, not sure why I prefer that.

I really need to go some some big convention, I’ve only been to a really small comic convention that only took up one room at a hotel, but I love them.

That trip sounds awesome, glad to hear that besides the bad stuff it was perfect.

I came across these a few days ago. I do hope that the artists comment here themselves as well, though.

Good to see you back :)
Austria really is lovely and the food there is great indeed. As to sprinkling water and still water, it’s pretty common in Europe to have a choice between the two. I happen to hate sprinkling water like nothing else in the world :P

Actually one can be culturally shocked by the presence of AC. We hardly have it in Poland (we do in office buildings etc., but rarely in private houses) so when I went to Japan and it was everywhere it got rather annoying. I hated having this constant draught of chilly air in my room so I preferred to turn the thing off, even though it was the middle of the summer.

Flying for nine hours is definitely terrible. That’s around how long it took me to get from Poland to Japan and I couldn’t sleep either. That also happened to be my first time travelling by plane.

          Seriously, thank you!
I can hardly put into words how much it means to me what you did there (maybe it’s because it’s late, or because english isn’t my first language).
I had like a ton of people looking at my stuff, and they had so many nice things to say.
You truly made my day, heck, even my week.

Thanks for thanking my thanks. LOL
    Anyways…

Just like with various other reviewers (Nostalgia Critic, AVGN, etc.), you’ve become a real inspiration to me, Spoony, and I’ve become a big fan of yours. I’ve never created fanart for any of you or anything like that, but I did make a tribute to TGWTG, Cinemassacre and Blistered Thumbs on my webpage (it’s my first production ever made), if you want to check it out at:
    UnholyFireDragon.com

You were basically the “last straw” in making me create my own webshow starting in February, 2011. This was all after my TSE marathon of watching all of your website’s videos. You were that entertaining to me. Thanks for all the laughs.

I’m looking forward to your next video. :-)

Holy shit, it’s the official Spoony spoon..and it’s awesome! It looks like a magic wand.

Hire a graphic designer and rip off that idea..I’d buy a Spoon shirt.

The furthest I’ve been away from home was Kuala Lumpur. 19 hours from LA to Hong Kong, no sleep, my leg was jammed into the emergency escape door the whole flight. You think the DS can help..but you find that level grinding on Castlevania is no comfort.

I’ve only left the country once as well (besides going to Canada) and it was to visit both Spain and Paris on the same trip.

I too was very surprised at how many people were able to speak legit English! I was expecting there to be a ton of communication problems, but I can only recall of one moment where I was having troubles communicating with someone. Heck, I even met a guy in Spain who was able to speak seven different languages fluently and he knew a little bit of three other languages. I was simply amazed! (Haha, and it made me feel pretty stupid as well since I can only speak English and a tiny, tiny bit of Spanish. XD)

Also, I think food in Europe is the most amazing thing to eat ever! I still remember this certain dessert I had in Paris, and it was the most glorious thing that I have ever eaten.

Europe is so amazing and beautiful. I hope I’ll be able to go there again in the future!

That fan art you got was amazing! Haha, I especially dig the Spoony spoon! XD You’ve got some very talented fans!

I understand you completely. This Saturday I am leaving for Thailand from NY, a 24 hour flight/layover time (1 in Tokyo), and I can’t sleep on planes either. I’m going to be a Zombie when I arrive. Thankfully I am meeting my girlfriend there (She is Thai), because I can barely speak a word of Thai. Ever hear a monotone New Yorker speak a tonal language? Not pretty :) The English is spelled so phonetically that it is confusing. There is a city there called Phukett, and it isn’t said like you might think.

Fuck yes Avadon. Spiderweb is a great company, making games like Exile (remade and continued as Avernum), Geneforge, and Nethergate (think Ultima with more Romans and Celts).

Avernum is getting a remake, site says Q1 2012.

I’m glad you had a good time Spoony.  I really wish I was able to do things like that, but unfortunately I just don’t get that chance.  Believe me, I’d sell my right leg to even get the opportunity to bitch about trans-Atlantic flights or airline food or see signs in German and eat Schnitzel.  Farthest I’ve been in like 15 years was to Conbravo, and I still can’t get the nightmares out of my head(I was the guy who told you I had a fear of celebrities).

Anyway, still awesome to hear of the experiences you had.  Will say that after hearing about what they gave you over there, somehow Canada and it’s Timbits just can’t compare.

Up here in Canada we have perrier carbonated water, I hate it, but my dad loves it.

Nice to hear about your trip Spoony,
I’m surprised that the still or sparkling water question confused you….
(you don’t drink much water, do you?)

I actually went to Switzerland this summer.  I ended up having a similar situation to your’s with the airline.  From Chicago to Frankfurt, I just couldn’t sleep.  I went for about 40 hours straight with only about 2 hours.  Then my bag ended up getting lost for a day and a half before turning up at our hotel.  For me, it wasn’t so bad.  All of my clothes were in that one bag that turned up after a day.  My mother and brother, on the other hand, were packed in either the other bag (which showed up after about three days) or half in each bag.

Anyway, nice to have you back in the states!  Looking forward to more reviews!

Well, that trip sounded fun except the loosing your cloths part.
I lived in Az for about 5-6months with my cusins that live out there but my exsperince was a lot different that your everyday life.  My cusins are those survivalist/hippy types that live out in the middle of nowhere using solar panels for electrisity.  It was close by Flag Staff and not far from Snow Flake.
So, there was absolutly no anti-tourist looking people?
I do like how a lot of ya’ll’s fanartist do get a lot of details wrong.

Protip, carbonated water here is referred to as seltzer water. Another protip, mix it with juice and you have something that even God would envy.

The only way I can bear to drink carbonated water is with juice xD And yeah, it’s really good. I like to think it was invented specifically for that purpose :P

Most airports hire people that speak English, especially with costumer service.  your major hotels will also have English speaking staff, it’s just common sense for good business.

I’m german and I have no idea why you would drink something that tastes as boring as still water. Carbonated water tastes _so_ much better.
In restaurants, you can ask for a bottle and sometimes they will give you ice to cool it.

By the way, you have every reason to feel like an american pig – seriously, who only speaks one language? Also, it’s “Duesseldorf” not “Duusseldorf”. ;-P
And the word for “bus station” is “Bushaltestelle” – it contains “bus” and “halt” so how can you miss that?

However, I would love to hang out with you in germany. That would be so amazing.

Also, it really scares me that you love austrian food that much, because to me it indicates how terrible american food has to be.

On a different note, how stupid is Benzai that he tries to hug a panda?

You can’t judge all Europe based on Austria, it’s a very diverse continent.

  • http://www.facebook.com/vladimir.tolpygo Vladimir Tolpygo

Hmm, about the water, I think it’s only that popular in the German speaking countries (possibly Netherlands, Denmark as well, but I’m not sure. But in Portugal/Spain, even though there is sparkling water, people normally drink still water, so don’t go saying sparkling water is a big thing in Europe, when you’ve only been to Austria =P

  • http://twitter.com/TheNikus Omnikus Schlotter

Hah! The water with the Roman guy on it is “Römerquelle” (http://www.news.at/articles/0205/img/28928_i.jpg?1012308486 ). Amirite? I know stuff :D

The reason we don’t have ice in our drinks, is because everyone said, “no ice”, so they eventually gave up on giving you ice unless you ask for it.

And why? Why would you want watered down cola, or if you drink it fast, drink but a little bit of fluids leaving chunks of ice. Ice is a method of screwing you out of your money, and we Europeans didn’t fall for it.

    • Anonymous

yea this. in america they just put lots of ice in everything because its a way of giving u less of what u actually ordered. also in austria u can drink tap water safely without getting the shits. this is only the case in non european countries, maybe some areas of turkey and or the eastern european states.

actually drinking non-carbonated water in germany is a really weird thing. people always say to me why do u drink dead water (still water)… i dont know man, i dont like the fizzy stuff either.

      • Syrian_Girl_55

Well, that’s not really true. There are just as much people who prefer the still over the sparkling water.

  • http://twitter.com/bernyrb Bernhard binder

Hey there. It was me who made the poster.
    http://fav.me/d48xfy5
I just got informed on deviantart that you posted this vlog.
When you pulled the poster out, I almost got an heart attack.
I’M SO GLAD YOU LIKE IT!
It’s a shame I couldn’t give it to you personally, since I was only at the con of friday. I had other plans with my girlfiend (we went countryside for a nice romantic weekend), and I didn’t want her to suffer through another con (I dragged the poor thing 3 days behind me at Lucca Comics&Games last year). The Aninite website didn’t have any information on when the panel was, so I just showed up on friday in hope to find you. I found the TGWTG crew in artist alley with the fancomic people. Benzaie offered to deliver you the poster, and I tagged along when they went for drinks.

At first I wasn’t sure how big I should make the print. I work 100% digital, i drew it that big and figured It would be cool to give you a fricking poster instead of some 11×17 printout.

It doesn’t surprise me that you can’t read my signature. Some people think my signature says “Bitch” instead of “Binder”. I’m thinking about changing it to something more iconic.
Funny sidenote. I totally ripped off the colors of the Fatal Fury: The Motion picture boxart XD

Römerquelle was the water with the roman head. The Coca-Cola Company bought them a few years ago and made a GIGANTIC push (I know, because besides being an illustrator for hire, I work for Coke in their Austrian graphics department). So for like 5-6 years now, we have bottled water everywhere. Which is kind of confusing since the Water quality in Vienna is amazing. It kinda makes me scratch my head that we use high quality water that comes from the Alps to flush our fucking toilets.
The thing about “ANKER”. I really don’t like their pastries. We have a lot of those bakery chains in Vienna, but I think Anker is the weakest. I would rather recommend “Felber”, “Groissböck” or “Der Mann”.

I’m sorry to hear about your luggage. I hope this doesn’t mean you won’t come back next year. I want to show off my (almost) accent free english. XD

    Cheers
    Berny

Dude, don’t worry about the polish translation. We have like at least 50 terms for “dick”, and at least 20 for “fuck”, “ass” and “bitch”. I think there are enough curses in polish to properly give the right impression about Tidus. Looking forward for DOA, now that’s a bunch of shit

English language is very simple in terms of gramar complexity and sentence richness,
in direct comparison to Polish, it is almost Barbaric… but thats why it is so easy to learn, and why it is so popular in Europe. Perfect example of superiority of simple solutions over complex ones.

    Hey,
Spoony, glad to hear you liked being on the other side of Atlantic Ocean ! English here is popular just because
having like 25 or more languages on a territory like half of States can be
little ‘difficult’ :) Hope one day you will come to see Poland. Recommend Warsaw or Cracov :) And you will see here
a LOT more things that will make you ‘shit bricks’ :) cause that’s how we roll
in a crazy land of Poland. I’m sure that guys up here would help you and show some things (castles, beautiful
girls, quality vodka, maybe some stupid stuff that communism left here :) i
    think you can’t see that in USA as well {i mean except the girls}
    :) )

    If not i would
help, i have a great basement where i keep my daughter. But enogh
about Austria, if you know what i mean.

‘See you’ on a next great videos Mr “Łyżka”

I hate carbonated water, and I live in Poland :P

And Austria is not whole europe, all counties are different.

  • Anonymous

I was in Vienna and met you. :D
I know you said we shouldn’t thank you, but I do, because it was awesome meeting you guys.
Actually I was a bit worried about you. You were a bit pale and looked really tired at the signing.
But I know how a long flight feels. Last year I went to Japan, with a stop in Dubai.
    The horrors.
Sleepings was almost impossible. Not enough space, back was aching, neck hurt, not enough space for my legs…awful.
About the water thing: No, not all of us like bubble water. :)
I don’t, but you get used to it specifying what you want. And the ice thing is depending on the restaruants. Some serve drinks with ice, some don’t, but you can always ask for it.
I mean, McD does give you Coke with ice. Alot of ice. And water. But that’s another topic.

Hearing that you like architecture and statues makes me like you more. :D
Vienna was beautyful (I live in Switzerland, but I’m Spanish) and so much more pleasant than Munich. Now dear Germans, don’t bash me. I like Munich, but the overall impression of Vienna was just better. :)

Talking about sweets: we went to Oberlaa. Awesome!
I had mango-chocolate cake. I’d kill for that. Never had such a delicious cake in years.

I have a question for you Spoony: Welshy was very shy at the Con, stayind in the shadows at the signing. Why? Didn’t he expect to have fans there? Or was it because of the limited seats?
I talked to him anyways. :P

So, enough babbling. It was fun meeting you!
And thanks for taking a picture with me. :D

ok ok, i might have “borrowed” ur suitcase when i noticed ur name on the flight list for ur stop in dusseldorf. but seriously, all i did was put on every outfit once and jack off in it while i taped it. i made sure to clean em all and got most of the white stains off… i m sure u ll understand!

    i ll upload videos soon.

Noah, I can definitely understand your confusion with sparkled water. I was in Hungary recently and when a waitress asked me if I wanted sparkled or still water, I didn’t understand what she meant.

I know what sparkled water is, here in Finland it’s pretty common, but I have never encountered the english term before.

Oh and about translating into polish – you don’t have to worry. Polish has 30 times more cure words than english :P And motherfucker is in pl (matkojebca :P ). On the other hand, i prefer watching videos in english without written text that distracts me :P

Looking forward to some Vlogs and the commentary. And no hurry, I think most won’t mind if the big reviews take a bit longer.
For the carbonated water thing: I’m from Germany and I never understood the reason for it and hate it.

Generally, Europe does not offer ice because of a few reasons.

    1. Ice can contain contaminated particles that they don’t want to add to drinks.
    2. Adding ice dilutes your drink, and basically degrades it.

I’ve traveled the world, and Ice is not commonly ordered for drinks. Some countries suggest never ordering ice due to health concerns with the local water. So it is a good idea to simply order a cold drink with no ice. Its better for you, and you quality of drink is improved.

Well, carbonated water certainly is something you’d have to get used to. Just as I had to get used to getting still water all the time, when I was in the States, studying at an American college for a few months. Personally, I prefer carbonated water over still water. I might as well just drink tap water, so why should I buy still water?

Hey Spoony glad you liked Austria. I know how hard it can be to flight. One time i flew from Germany (yes i´m German blame me for loosing your luggage xD) to Texas and as you i can´t sleep on planes.

Yes the Water thing. I was shocked when i was in the USA and my aunt told me that you guys don´t have carbonated water ^^.

Im Your fan from Poland, i know English so i watch Your videos without subtitles, but i’ve seen Polish translations and they are ok, not so many hard-to-translate words :) (i was translating George Carlin standups to Polish, that was a bit harder i guess ;) ).

I was in Vienna then, if i would knew that You were there somewhere i would put Brugle’s art away (i’e been wandering in the museums) and go to the convention, such a missed opportunity.. :(

It’s so funny to listen about sparkling water and other stuff, when i went to Austria from Poland i had a completely different experiences, old buildings, castles, and other stuff You mentioned is nothing amazing when you live in Europe. It was very interesting to know Your point of view about it.

    Look here ;) http://thatguywiththeglasses.pl/

Speaking of bad movies… No Retreat, No Surrender is the worst scam of a movie EVER.
HUGE picture of Van Damme on the cover, and he’s in the movie for like 10 minutes at the end, and 3 minutes at the start. >=[
Oh, if you wanna see the hero of the movie, you can see about 1/3 of his face if you look at the back cover! He’s in one of the tiny screenshots. :D

what the hell. in america you put ice in beer? well, i guess it doesn’t make a difference since your beer already tastes like beer-flavoured water ;)

    • Geoffrey Walter

No, beer is not usually iced in america. In fact I’ve never seen iced bear, truthfully. That said, most of our beers are kept refrigerated, or kept near freezing temperatures, and is often served in mugs which have been kept in a freezer.

By the way, Spoony, can you say if there’s even the slightest chance that you’ll someday come to Germany? I and many other fans would love to meet you there! Especially since I have no chance of making long-distance-travels in the near future (college life, why u so hard on my budget?)—

I think you might be shocked by how many people all over the world speak English, Spoony. It’s probably the 3rd or 4th most common language in the world. It and French have been the major trade languages for the last century or so. Mandarin is starting to edge out French, last I heard, but yeah. Fully 1/6 of the world’s population speaks English either as a native or as a secondary language. If it wasn’t for the populations of India and China being so extreme, I’d imagine English would be the most spoken language in the world.

English might as well be “Common” at this point ;)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BEKFJ6KI2HTRSFMGSX3TGV7UJQ Tobias Verhulst

I agree. I’m from Belgium and most people here speak at least three languages. Everybody here learns at least Dutch, French and English in high school, sometimes also German, Spanish or Italian. I think the main reason for this is that in Europe there are a lot of languages spoken in a relatively small area. Within a few hours I can drive to places where people speak French, Dutch, German and English. When you’re living in the USA there really isn’t so much pressure to learn different languages. The same goes for example for some places in Russia, where people only speak Russian. So I don’t think Americans are stupid for not speaking a lot of languages, there’s just no big reason to, for most people.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1773999451 Joshua Tkachenko

I live in Russia, everyone speaks another language.  It is required in school and has been since Soviet times.  You either learn English, German, or French though Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese are becoming more common.  The pressure to learn another language in Russia is immense.  However, you aren’t going to find many Russians using their knowledge of another language to be helpful to say, tourists.

        • Anonymous

So you’re saying all Russians are assholes? I hope that’s not true.

Assholes? No. More like introverted with a longstanding cultural norm of not gettin involved in other people’s business. There are good and bad things about it.

Spoony, Europe has 50 countries and not two of them are the same. Differences between the countries are just as big as between USA and Austria (and in some cases way bigger). You should refer to Austria as Austria, since Europe is an ambiguous term.

Well, I’m not sure about hating, but here (Bulgaria) if you order water, you’d likely get either mineral or tap. Not many places have soda/carbonated water, really. It’s just a matter of culinary culture, so to speak.

      • Anonymous

Odd to meet a fellow Bulgarian just randomly around the ‘Net :) The Mighty Wombat speaks the truth – not many establishments here sell carbonated water, though you could still buy it in the stores if you happen to like the nasty stuff. The ones that let you pull the bottle of your choice out of those glass-door fridges are where you can get the wrong kind if you’re not careful, though. I’ve seen friends’ hearts sink when they open the bottle and hear that hiss. Ugh!

Also, yeah, Europe is not all one nation and one culture, but then neither is the US. I don’t really know the first thing about US local life, but I’d imagine people from different states across the map have vastly different customs and cultural values from each other. Probably more different than even we Slav nations have here on the Balkans :)

I’m taking a German class now and when my teacher told that they almost always drink mineral or “sparkling” water it was kind of strange to me. It makes sense though because the water quality isn’t very good over there. They also put the water into orange juice or apple juice called orangensaft or apfelsaft, which sounds disgusting because it probably tastes like water downed juice. Europeans have some strange food. They also don’t have pies. Other than that they can make a mean potato…anything, they love potatoes.

    • Ralf van Goch

      rofl you know nothing…..

“European” One culture apparently… and no pies? WTF?

        • Anonymous

I was talking about what I learned in my German class, from my German born professor, dick weed. No Europe is not one culture and I never said it was, my whole statement was about what I have learned so far about Germany. Besides I’m an Art History and general History major with a minor in anthropology. I think I know a little bit about culture asshole. So stop being an over reactive douche saying that he thinks of Europe is one big culture which I’m pretty sure he’s smart enough to know that its not. Give people some credit towards their intelligence.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1773999451 Joshua Tkachenko

Oh boy an art history major!!!  Let me give you some advice kid, don’t be coming at people who live in and grew up in Europe with some BS about “I took a university class on it I know what I’m talking about” It makes you look ridiculous.  I’ve watched ‘Friends’ and took an American History class. I MUST BE AN EXPERT ON AMERICAN CULTURE! Да?

          • Anonymous

Of course I’m not an expert (and I’m not a kid but a full grown woman), but DO NOT degrade my learning just because I’m American. I’m proud to be experiencing and adding to my awareness a vast range of cultures across the world and not just Europe. Just like when Europeans learn about my culture I know that at least they’re trying to learn more about others then themselves. I openly support them and encourage them to learn more about us instead of saying they’re ignorant morons that know nothing of us and never will. So here’s my advise to you “friend”, get your head out of your ass and realize that you’re as ignorant of us as we are of you and be open to the possibility that one day, heaven forbid, I may actually become an expert on some of the multicultural juggernaut that is Europe (Oh my God no, an American that knows things!).

          • Anonymous

Pies really are uncommon in Germany, we have a wide variety of cakes to make up for it though (the cake from Portal comes from Germany :D), also we have a strange assortment of other baked stuff, a decent bakery is a place you should definetly check out if you ever go to Germany.

Your comment about the  water-quality however is wrong.
I know of no part of Germany where you cant drink tabwater,
granted, in some places it tastes different than in others, but mostly the quality is very high. This is true or the most part of europe as well.

Oh, and about the mixing of juice and sparkly water…
dont imagine things :D, just try it.
            It tastes incredibly refreshing.

          • Anonymous

I’m sorry about my misinformation and maybe one day I’ll try get the courage to try Orangensaft : ). Thank you for not attacking me and being awesome. I would love to one day go to Germany and immerse myself in the culture and again I’m sorry about the water comment, but now I know! Danke!

          • Anonymous

Oh, you seem to have picked that one up wrong, Orangensaft and Apfelsaft just means Orangejuice and Applejuice.( the juice/the juices = der Saft/ die Säfte)
If you start mixing them with sparkling water however you get a “Schorle” (Sg:die Schorle;Pl: die Schorlen), so you call it Apfelschorle and Orangensaftschorle.
            :D
I have no idea where that word comes from however
Languages sure are a strange and funny thing.

          • Anonymous

That’s right I remember now. Sometimes I forget that I still have a long way to go in learning German. I mean I even have trouble reading the children’s book we were given ¯_(ツ)_/¯, but I’m at least (slowly) getting better. It’s a fun language to learn though.

    • Anonymous

I lived in Germany for two years. As far as the beverages go (for Germany at least), what APXP said is correct. I’ve had nothing but sparkling water during my stay (my dad was a PhD student, so it’s not exactly the highest quality of life). Watering down juice is definitely true, but from what I receall (it was over 10 years ago) the juice there is a lot more concentrated. You get the fizz in the juice, but it still tastes right.

  • Ralf van Goch

English is a pretty good language know, and it helps you to survive in any place that has any tourism. That’s one thing you’ve got Hollywood to thank for :). Pointing and mimicry usually helps if everything else fails. But no matter where you are, usually there’s someone who knows a few words of English.

Ricky Gervais about being in France:
“Point, talk slowly and a little louder. If they don’t still have a clue,
smash the place up, secure in the knowledge that you tried your best.”

It was simply brilliant to see you in Vienna, Spoony. Glad you made it -same for the rest of the gang.
Also something you said during the Q&A panel really caught my interest… the part when you recommended people to watch the Twillight movies because of how ridiculously riffable they were. PLEASE tell me you actually plan on doing this. I’m sure it would turn out awesome coming from you.

Also, for the people that keep mentioning Austria being different from rest of the Europe and vice versa… I do agree, but can’t help but think that Vienna is one best places to start if one were to experience Europe. Dun get me wrong, if I’d have the opportunity, I’d love to show the TGWTG team places around Slovakia as well, but as first impressions go… I’d start in Vienna, no doubt about that.

I went to Europe my Freshman year of high school. A lot of what you described was very similar to what I experienced while I was in Germany. It is really fun to visit another country, and it gives me a very interesting to see the cultural change. However, I have a particularly painful story about a mile walk up a path that was at a 30 degree angle up a mountain while it was snowing. Let’s just say that after the treck, I couldn’t feel my legs.

Looking forward to the FFX2 costume you were hinting at.

It was a blast chatting with you guys… or mostly standing face to face to you, having lost all my words and English skills like a complete idiot. I watched your videos for years. So when I went there right after 6 hours of car driving (without air conditioning), I really didn’t expect you in one of the hallways in that moment. Stepped forward anyway. That’s where someone brought the awesome spoon.

It WAS pretty hot over those days, everyone had these little fans. They even had to send everyone out of the main stage shortly before your QA-session because it was getting too hot. Still, interesting to hear about Vienna from an American’s point of view, even if they make Europe sound like one huge country ;)
And the description of the castle sounded like Schönbrunn, btw. Very worth checking out.

Really hope to see you guys again next year.

    Spoony,

I know what you mean about the sparkling water stuff. Fancier restaurants here in the states offer it. I took my now wife to Ruth’s Chris steak house for our one year dating anniversary. Ruth’s Chris is about $160 for two people for appetizer, entrees, deserts & drinks.

They came up and said “has anyone talked to your about water?” after we were seated. I had a confused look on my face and said “um…..no”?

I was thinking “what do you mean has anyone talked to us about water, is there a problem with your water?”

He listed off like 4 different high end brands of water and one was sparkling; we accidentally got the sparking water, it was nasty.

ok this vid just pisses me off….

i mean come on eruope is not a coutry, its a continent and austria is a country in that continent just like north america also is a continent and usa is a country in that continent.

and the many different countries in europe got wery varied cultures, climate, languages, etc.

so plz stop saying that just because you find austria(or even more specificly, vienna) be different from your home country doesnt mean its like that in the entire europe

    fuckin ignosaurus

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Wells/13805208 Patrick Wells

Dear God, you are the one being Ignorant here. All cultures are different, and Spoony is talking about the difference and culture shock he experienced. There’s nothing at all wrong with that.

Also, comparing EUROPE to the US is not at all an odd comparison, seeing as they are roughly the same damn size, and thus the US also varies culturally as you travel across the country.

      • http://twitter.com/JJJMMM1 JM

Comparing Europe to USA is an odd comparison, since USA is waaay more homogenous than Europe. I’m not saying there aren’t differences between the different states, but it’s in no way comparable to the differences between European cultures. These things are hard to measure, but I’d say that the differences between Austria and Spain are just as big, if not bigger than the differences between USA and Austria.

Also, altough Europe is geographically about the same size as USA, there are about 2.5 times more people there. It’s not the same size in that sense.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MCK6CIYZ2C55FES3NW4BAOTG4E Christina

Huh? Spoony never said he expected all of Europe to be like Vienna. What are you talking about?

  • gravityBomb

Spoony! SO good to see you again! :D

But first: people from Europe/people who just wanna bitch- come on. Really? He’s just talking about what he saw. I kinda felt the same way when I went over to Europe for the first time, so it’s not uncommon. Yes, we get it. There are different cultures. Just chill out. It’s not like he said anything bad about the countries/Austria/Vienna or something. Sheesh. It’s the bottled water comment that did it, isn’t it? And no, not all Americans are idiots. Seeing something on TV or in movies is different from when you experience it. :)

The water thing though always threw me off when I went to Italy. I usually just ordered Coke so I wouldn’t have to go through the sparkling vs. non debate with my family. XD Huh. Come to think of it, the way you described getting a soda in a restaurant sounds like what they did in Italy…

I can’t wait for new videos, too! The FF X-2 video is gonna be great, even if it’ll be the finale (I hope it’s not. I wanna hear more bitching about it. :D)! But again, it’s great to see you getting back to work! And someday, if I do get to meet you, I’ll definitely thank you for doing this for all of us. :)

P.S. I love that you talked about how we all thought you looked like Ash. Made my day, seriously. XD

    • Christopher James Aikman

I get the feeling you’re American but you’re talking more truth than half of my fellow Euros in here.

      • gravityBomb

I am and thank you very much for the compliment. :)

Just as an add-on, even if you know something’ll be different, it’s still kinda shocking/amazing to someone who’s never been out of the country. /nods Like for me, it was how the trains were different, the water thing, how they handle meal times and stuff. And I was lucky enough to go to Italy with 4 years of Italian behind me (I read better than I speak, but that really helped since no one in my family knew any Italian. Even better, 3/4ths of us are Polish. XD)

Sorry guys. I’ll stop ranting now. ;)

You should come to Sweden i dont think ive met one person ca 15-45 that dosent at least speak basic English. I think one of the things that really helps is that we dont dubb any of our tv. And that we learn English in school from grade 3 and up.

We dont expect Americans/English people to learn all different languages but something you guys could do is use metric, its really annoying that you guys dont do metric. I mean thats a little bit of effort that would go a long way. I mean even your scientists realize that metric makes it so much more convenient. You only represent 4. something % of the world. Hey we learned your language the least you guys can do is use metric when you speak to an international audience.

Just a though, just phase it out. Please America.

Keep up the good work Spoony and visit Sweden.

First off awesome video Spoony. I always find it weird to see the reactions of people who haven’t travelled much beyond their own country before. Honestly it’s not even worth trying to learn the language sometimes because the dialects and accents between cities and countries with the same language mean that nobody is ever going to understand you trying to speak it with your native accent.Anyone who says otherwise must be a great voice actor.

    Secondly.
Jeebus fuck people. Not everyone is as middle class and cultured as you and it’s very difficult for people who have never left their home country to know exactly what to expect and adapt. At no point did Spoony say Europe was just one country so get off your cultural high horse already.

This is coming from a Scottish Brit aka the red headed step child of Europe. I’ve been all over Europe, South America and America and still experience massive culture shock when I go to a foreign country. See my point above about accents. I only have to go as far as the north of England and people look at me like an alien because of my accent and world view.
Half of you saying this crap probably have very cultured upbringings.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MCK6CIYZ2C55FES3NW4BAOTG4E Christina

Yes, Germans, Austrians and the Swiss love carbonated/sparkling water, despite the fact that the quality of our tap water is very good. If you go to France, however, you will get as much still water (tap or mineral) as you can drink. In French restaurants, they will serve a big jug full of cold tap water with every meal, for no extra cost; but try to ask for carbonated water and they’ll look at you like you’re crazy, and if you’re lucky they will find a bottle that gathered dust in the cellar for a year (I had that happen to me, literally). It’s a northern Europe vs. mediterranean Europe difference.

On the other hand, you won’t find such a bewildering number of Soda pop drinks in northern Europe as you apparently find in the USA, to judge by some of Brad Jones’ “Brad Tries” episodes. Next time you are in Germany, try Bionade. It’s a sparkling, alcohol-free soda made by fermenting malt that comes in several fruit flavours such as ginger-orange, lychee, elderberry, quince, or herbs, with no artificially added sugar; it was invented in 1995 but It seems to be only available in Germany.

Ice in drinks. You can get ice cubes in your apple juice or Apfelschorle (a typical German summer drink made up of apple juice diluted with sparkling water) when it’s very warm outside, but otherwise the only place they put tons of ice into your Cola will be McDonalds. Probably because Germans would consider being forced to pay for a glass which is filled 70% ice and only 30% Cola as being cheated. And no German or Austrian would put ice in BEER. Heresy! Cold, yes, beer has to be cold, not piss-warm. But watering it down…. heresy! ;-)

The point about Europeans is that “Europe” really does not exist in the way the United States do. Europe (plus the British Islands and Scandinavia) is a culturally diverse area. There are cultural similarities, of course, due to history and due to TV equalising pop culture, and nations such as Germany have had an influx of immigrants from Italy, Turkey, Greece, and Asia that have permanently altered especially the cultinary landscape, so the standard fast food is Turkish kebab, Greek döner, German curry sausage and roast chicken, Chinese/Taiwanese roast-duck-made-for-Europeans, and Italian spaghetti.

But Austria and Switzerland are culturally and ethnically quite homogenous nations, despite the Swiss growning up with four languages (their own brand of German called Switzerdütsch, German, French, and English).

Also keep in mind that English is in fact a foreign language in all of continental Europe. But i.e. in Germany, English (and its weird demented cousin, “Denglish”, the kind of mangled English German commercials love to inflict on us) is becoming a parallel language in every-day life, even if there’s a perfectly good German term available, which can become frustrating.

Next time, stash some underwear in your backpack. Or go buy some essentials.

Oh god, I remember that video Doug did on his hotel in Vienna last year, and that room looked like a horrible dumb. Good to hear this time around you could sleep in a proper hotel.

Oh yes, air conditioning is uncommon in northern Europe, even in 4-star hotels, let alone in private homes. It’s not that people could not afford it, because the middle and upper income classes could, but it’s considered waste of electricity. The only rooms with air conditioning are computer server rooms. In northern Europe, people usually ask ” does this house have central heating?” instead.

A lot of European cities and infrastructure were devastated during the world wars, but there’s still a lot of architecture left that goes back to Roman, medieval or colonial times, and famous buildings destroyed during WW2 were rebuilt decades later. Places like Rome, though, have become a kind of tourist Disneyland version of Rome, stuffed full of architecture and tourists. But yeah, cathedrals and old castles are a dime a dozen in Europe and the UK.

Eh, Spoony, you don’t have a huge nose.
    Good luck at the doctor’s.

You don’t have carbonated water in America Oo ? That’s pretty much the standard here in Europe – so much that I find normal water slightly weird… oO

Funny how fluent the Austrians are with English. Here in Germany, everyone learns English at school, but most don’t care enough to remember any of it. I even now quite a lot of guys at my university who act like English is some kind of Alien language.

The lemon-flavored beer you’ve drunk was probably “Radler”, which is basically beer (usually pilsner) mixed with lemonade (or coke, depending on the exact brand). Pretty much every German brewery has something like that, but I think the most common Radler is “Licher X²”.

    • http://twitter.com/bernyrb Bernhard binder

I think in context of the convention, the hotel and the airport somewhat fluent English is madatory. Otherwise the average Austrian is pretty bad when it comes to foreign languages.
It’s basicly the same thing that you described. It’s taught and then forgotten. But it’s understandable considering everything is dubbed and translated.

We have like a ton of different “Radler” flavors in Austria. Lemons, Limes, Oranges, Grapefruits,  Redcurrants, Almdudler, but I have never heard of a Coke Radler. Which brewery does that? Can you recommend it?

      • doresh

Licher X² has all different kinds of flavors, Coke being among them. Not really my cup of tea (I prefer more classic Radler).

*Tries to do a German accent* Ze ignorant American, who´s nevah seen a castle in his life has bleemed us germans for loosing hiz luggage! *cough* Agh. You´d think this accent´d be easy for a native German speaker! Sarcasm aside:

Yes, no one drinks tap water here in europe. Ever. Putting signs in multiple languages is quite common in public places and, as doresh said, the “lemon beer” was probably “Radler”.

I´m curious though: Are the austrians really that fluent in english? Here in Germany, well…. let´s just say that I´m the only one who speaks english at my workplace. Let alone fluently and *wizaut ze streench accent*.^^

The upside is that you can often help out just by translating a few words. :)

Also, I wonder… how´d he get from Düsseldorf to Wien/Vienna? If he went by train it´s likely his train went through my hometown! *fanboy squee*^^

    Anyways, glad Spoony liked europe!

    • doresh

I think the funniest part about fellow Germans trying to speak English is if they just speak German and replace every other word with English. Dunno if that helps much, but at least it sounds funny ^^

Mmh, for being pretty lazy when it comes to English (one of the easiest languages you can learn as a German IMO), we sure as hell love to come up with faux English words (“Handy” for mobile phone, “Oldtimer” for  classic cars, “Smoking” for tuxedo). So expect lots of weird ass Pseudo-English should you ever travel to Germany ^^ !

      • http://profiles.google.com/spoonseeker Spoon Seeker

Oh how I recognize that one. Since I am from Luxembourg, and God, one thing is for sure. The Luxembourgish/english is just as terrible as the German/english. I don’t get how some Luxembourgers say “naddle” instead of “noodle”. Oh yes, Naddle. Don’t we all just want to forget about her. XP

        • doresh

No carbonated water? That was quite a surprise really. It’s really common around Europe, even here in the cold Nordic and Sweden. I don’t drink it much personally because our tap-water is good enough for me.
It would be incredible if you ever visited a Swedish convention but they are usually not very big, especially compared too others around the world which is unfortunate.

I am really glad that you had a great time in Europe, s there is chance to see you live on some other Convention. I am not from Austria but from Czech republic and that is why i can really say that you have lots of fans all over the world (to be honest almost all reviewers from TGWTG has lots of fans here). I hope that you will visit Europe more and maybe here in Czech Republic.

And now the question about still ans sparkling water. I personally prefer still water but the sellers here don’t get lot of money for this water so they want to sell you something else. I personally don’t like this idea but it is possible to get used to it. And this ice in all drink think its really easy to explain. I think that this ice really destroy taste of any drink, so why to put ice into beer? Water from ice is then mixed with beer and than it taste really awkward. The same think with cola or something else. It is better to cool down whole drink and serve than put somewhere ice.

And one think, there are some people that translate your show to czech too so with polish we are the second nation.

Just wanted to point out that generalizing Europe as “one” culture is quite a mistake. Not only because Europe is a big place but because Europeans most often don’t regard themselves as “European” people firstly but “French” or “German”. In Sweden you often get ice in your drink if you’re in a restaurant. Sparkling water with a flavour is popular in Sweden but bottled water WITHOUT carbonation is NOT.

Something else on the market–at least up here in Canada–to try is melatonin.  Resets your sleep schedule and is supposed to help deal with jet lag to boot.

There are lots of different Nations and cultures in Europe, if you go to Spain or Portugal you’ll find that things differ from Austria/Germany over there. So careful with the generalizations ;)
And of course every Airport has everything displayed in English, its a damn AIRPORT and english is the World language! ^^  But you’re right about the water thing…actually im quiet amazed that you just drink still water in the US oO …I mean, I dont go to restaurant or something to drink table water, I can drink that at home.

I’ve lived in Vienna my whole life so I’m glad you liked it.
Btw sparkling water is kind of a healthy alternative to what you would call a ”soda”.
It’s commonly used to dilute fruit juice, or to fill your stomach when you diet.
The default drink is tap water and it’s the most natural thing to order “tap water” (because its really good^^).
If you want to show off your wealth, you order still water… ;)
As far as the air condition is concerned: Many places actually have it, but most Austrians who are exposed to it every day HATE it. So we either turn it off or turn it down if we can.

Glad you enjoyed your trip to Austria.

reminds me of my trip to Dubai earlier this year , which I enjoyed.

BTW , in case you didn’t get the idea behind the “Spoony , grab my coat” fan art , it’s basically inspired by a meme from deviantArt.

here’s a link that explains it:

What? Yes they do put ice! :o Or it probably depends on the country.
Here (Finland) at least we get ice, mostly. And we also get tapwater :)
    Without asking… I think.

I always take a lot of books and stuff to do on the plane. Haven’t travelled for futher than 4-5 hours, but still. :P

Your French is kind of like my German, then, but since I haven’t studied it for 2 years it’s getting poorer..

Yes, signs are unnerving. But it’s kind of weirder to see, since we have
two official languages here, only the other one in Sweden for example.
Also being in Norway or Denmark I almost understand. Almost.

    I wish I could’ve come :( Though I’m not much of a conventions-goer.

    Can’t wait! :D

    God dammit- these adds!

At the one minute mark, I get that annoying pop tart advertisement and the video immediately ends mid-sentence. It doesn’t matter if I try to replay the video, I still get the add.

    First off all thank you!

    2. Bubbly water is awesome! In Sweden you get them in different flawors. They just love that stuff, and so do I. In Luxembourg (where I am from), and Sweden, you also have to tell them “tap water” instead of only water, otherwise you’ll have to pay. Which is silly. Especially if you go out and party? ALWAYS say tap water! So you know that in case you’d ever come to Luxembourg or Sweden.

    3. It’s funny since I visted the US last christmas, and putting ice in everything was a really great thing. But then it was all ruined while never being sure how much you have to pay for stuff once you’re done shopping! (taxes, taxes, taxes).

    4. God I wish I could have come to vienna. I would have loved to meet you two.
I saw the video of you and Doug on thatguywiththeglasses.com and loved it.

Keep up the great work and thank you for loving us fans! :D
    Yap! Now I am done!

You did mention that they don’t put ice on anything in europe, and I gotta correct you that they actually do. I don’t know about Austria but in here where I live, especially if the drink is cola based and you get it in a mug or a glass, they do put ice in there.

It’s a tradition in most of bars and fast food restaurants here in finland.

  • Kajetan Dworski

Most bottled water in Europe is mineral water. Regular water in bottles is usually only for cities that have terrible tap water. I live in the mountains, so my tap water is basically spring water, but yeah, large cities can have terrible tap water. You can get all kinds of water – sparkling, still, slightly sparkling, naturally carbonated…

If you ask for ice, they’ll give it to you. Most places in Europe that aren’t in the South don’t have AC because it’s not cost effective.

I can’t imagine the mayhem if there weren’t signs in English at the airports. Most people speak English in Europe, especially in bigger cities. These also usually have most signs in English, at least the nicer ones.

Glad you liked the food. But then again I have not met an American in Europe who WASN’T going like “This is the best meal I’ve ever eaten” with every next meal. :)

Don’t worry about the Polish translation. Polish is devilishly flexible and is one of THE greatest languages to swear in. And ‘motherfucker’ translates literally just fine. I just hope the translators know their shit.

You should come to Europe more often!
    I suggest Wroclaw!

Ouch, bro. I’m European, and I’m rather offended. I hate “sparkling” water. I’m on tap water for 5 years.

Also, no worries about the languages. Im yet to meet someone who doesn’t know at least a BIT of english.

No one drinks sparkling water in Europe.  No one.  Well just sell it to confuse Americans then laugh when they spit it out screaming “What the hell is this shit!?”

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tony-Sairanen/100000170334296 Tony Sairanen

To be honest not nearly everyone drinks “sparkling” water in europe. And like someone said, the bottled water is usually mineral water or spring water, which makes it well.. worth something i guess. I don’t know, never really understood that.

But anyway it was great to see that you enjoyed visiting europe, even though most of the things that you said were like.. I guess normal to us europeans. So it was pretty amusing how you reacted on things. Oh well I guess no one can blame you, if it was your first time in europe. I guess I’d be as surprised of things if I went to “the states” :D

Is it really that hard to sit your ass down and learn few words of a language. I’m from Serbia and speak English and some basic French but when I went to Wiena I learned some german so i could get arround. It took me about a week of one hour sesions with book and computer to lern enough to find my way.

Also, communicate with people. In one day you will pick up lots of phrases that will help you.

Sparkling water is just more refreshing to the mouth. Nothing else. And it fills your stomach faster.

And Wiena has some of the best tap water of all the big cities of the world. I enjoyed it greatly.

    • http://twitter.com/FleacyTheSheep Desiree X

A lot of people don’t even learn the language before they move to a country. Your expecting way too much. Relax and let him do it his way.

Even from having a rough start on your trip,at least it turned out good at the end and got some great gifts from the fans too.

And I’m not sure if you’ll be doing any conventions in October, but there is one in Myrtle Beach called Xcon World IV.It’s a small convention and they’ve been doing it for only four years,it’s still pretty good. They have different guests each year, some around the area or some that are pretty famous in certain fields. Besides special guests, the convention started doing panels this year and some artists too.

I know it’s not the big, popular conventions but this is the only one around the area I live at that comes once a year. And the closest conventions to go to are out of the state, mostly around North Carolina or Florida.

It’s just a convention option,I understand if you’re too busy to attend in the month of October, especially when it’s close to Halloween. I’ll leave the link to the site and I can’t wait to see your upcoming videos Spoony.

It’s a real shame that over here in Australia, we dont really have conventions such as comiccons or E3 and so on.

Oh, we DO have ‘conventions’ or ‘meetups’ but they are small groups of people.

I went to something called ‘Swancon2000′ years ago, and it was the Australian version of the comic cons that we see in all of you and your friends and partners vids….the difference…while the rest of the world has huge convention centers filled with people, stalls, comic books and figurines galore and so on…over here, our ‘conventions’ are usually held in hotels where some of the meeting rooms or parlors are open to the public…either that or halls, where around 75 to 130 people attend.

    Not impressive at all.

I really wish Australia (Perth city to be exact, as that is where I live) would wake up, and join the rest of the world in fun conventions that cater to video games (which, sadly, our government assumes are only played by 10 yr olds, which is one of the reasons why we dont have an 18+ rating…much to the publics hatred and frustration) because I would love to hear that famous film stars, such as Robert Englund, who played the well known old school version of Freddy Krueger, attend and sign autographs and generally have loads of fun with their fans and generally have a ball with everyone.

i’d also love to hear that you guys would come to Australias ‘comicons’ or ‘E3′ shows…but sadly…and I’m being very fair here….ours are fucking shit!…well, the ones in Perth sure are.

I’m glad you liked Austria. Too bad i wasn’t there.. even though i live only about 40 minutes away from Vienna.. well.. maybe next year!
For Austrians i guess it’s a lot easier to learn english.. at least i think so. Just because we all grew up with english music or in my case with quite many tv shows or movies in english (german synchronisation can really suck at times…)

The comment about don’t drink tap water does ring true for some European countries: Italy, Spain and Portugal have horrible tap water. Not that it’ll make you sick it’s just that they use copper piping and it gives the water a metallic taste. Not very nice. Other European countries are fine as far as I know.

It is very interesting to hear about your experiences in Europe. I went to Italy 2 years ago, and had the same experiences you did. Every meal, ANYWHERE, was amazing. If you wanted water you got a fancy glass bottle to share. The Art and Architecture is phenomenal. Also I went in August, so It was stifling, especially in Rome. I was borderline dead from heat stroke. I’m not used to extreme heat at all, I live in BC.

If you ever go to Europe again, I strongly recommend Italy. It will just blow your mind. Especially Venice. That place is magical. Just be sure to bring a portable fan and plug adapters. I made the same mistake of not realizing just how hot it can be, and I also didn’t know they didn’t have AC.

Glad to see your back though, looking forward to more awesome videos.

Spoony I am the same way when it comes to not being able to sleep on airplanes and electric shaver.  I two have always used the electric and have always had a problem sleeping on planes.  When I was a kid I had flights that would be delayed to due weather or stuff as we went to flordia to go disney world.  So think of a kid who can’t sleep on a plane getting on it at late at night sometimes.  One of the reasons I always hated flying.  I would love to see TGWTG people here on east coast for a con but probably won’t  happen.

  • wiegeabo kilijabob

This is why I never feel weird packing a day or two worth of underwear and socks into my carry-on bag.

And your razor story made me nostalgic :p  I used an electric until college.  Then I tried a safety blade, and never looked back.  I didn’t realize how much the electric was tearing my face up.  You mean all that pain and rawness isn’t normal?! :p

  • http://twitter.com/Syndbad24 Matthias J Resch

Wow great Vlog! It’s really interesting, how my home county and European Culture are precive by Americans. For me it is completely normal to specificly order sparkling water. It never struck me as strange.

I really have to go to the USA soon …

  • Gergely Várfoki

Gulasch soup on the plane, eh? That’s a Hungarian meal, originally called gulyás. Well, I guess that’s the closest you’ll get to Hungarian culture or Hungary (my homeland) anyway. As for the old castles and fortresses: the whole continent is riddled with them. Peace is a relatively new thing here, European history is full of wars, so in the old times everybody wanted to live in an at least somewhat fortified place. Americans are pretty lucky in this aspect I guess, since most of their wars haven’t taken place in your own country.

As for long travels, i have to admit that I never left Europe so far. Honestly, even the taught of flight scares the shit out of me. Probably I would expect the plane to crash from the moment of taking off until the (hopefully) safe landing. So wherever I went, I did it with using buses and sometimes trains. The longest trip of mine was to England with a group of tourists on bus. The trip took 24 hours (including a 15 minute stop after every 3-4 hours). That was probably the longest day in my life.

As for the lack of AC: around here most of the people won’t buy one because it cost a LOT (well, compared to an average Hungarian salary anyway) to maintain them. I for one don’t even have central heating, putting some wood in the fireplace solves the issue during winter. As for the sometimes 100-110 F° heat during summer, we just open all the windows and hope for a rain or some wind to blow it away soon.

The others have covered other topics (Europe is not a country, the water-issue, knowledge of English, etc.) multiple times already, so I won’t bother with those. If you guys will come next year too, I’ll try to make it to Vienna. It’s not so far from here after all.

  • http://twitter.com/GJ__S GJS

He probably just boarded another plane in Düsseldorf. That’s how it worked for me when I traveled there.

  • Anonymous

Living in Australia and having relatives all over the continent and also in Greece and Switzerland (and now America), I’ve travelled in planes a lot and I can really sympathise with both A) being unable to sleep on fucking looooong flights, and B) losing your luggage (Greece airports are bloody nightmares). And as I’m always traveling economy where you can’t lie down, I always envy my cousins who go first and business class everywhere! (Helps when you’re not nigh broke, apparently…)

As for the AC, living in a hot arid environment – as most Aussies can attest to – I can identify with the love of air-con. My own addiction to AC has probably added a couple of thousand square km to the hole in the ozone layer… not something I’m particularly proud of.

I’m never anywhere near animecons (an obvious mistake of geography) but they do sound really fun so I should scrape together my savings and get to Sydney or Melbourne for the next one that comes around.

Great to hear you had a such a good time in Vienna. It is one hell of a beautiful city and I can just imagine how awesome having a con there might be. Thankyou for the sweet shout-out to the fans. We’re not all raving lunatics, and those of us that sometimes behave like it aren’t like that all the time, so thanks for giving us the benefit of the doubt. There’s some amazing fanart out there, and it’s always great to see it getting appreciated by the people who inspired it, as well.
