They weren’t very clear on what the Widow’s Sting was. She didn’t even use it at a range that I could recall.

The Justice League is never going to get made because DC can’t figure out what to do with its characters on the big screen period. They have Batman figured out and that’s it. Green Lantern and Superman Returns were so very bland and I think its because they’re afraid to take risks with them. 

I think the semi-theme of your review is something I’d noticed as well.

Avengers is one of those things that proves you CAN make fanboys happy and make tons of money at the same time.
(Note I am using “fanboy” just as a term here, not an insult, I’m in this definition of ‘fanboy’) 

It seems every time they make some ‘geek culture’ thing they go “Okay, how do we dumb this down & make this ‘more real’ so we can get lots of people to come.”  and most of the time that fails horribly, in box office, fan reaction, or both.

With the Marvel movies, they more seemed to be “Keep the stuff that’ll make the fanboys happy & just make it so good others will accept it”

You don’t HAVE to dumb it down, I’d be willing to bet a lot of the people, even those at the midnight showing I went to, have no freaking clue about comics. But ya know what they loved the movie, the crowd reactions were amazing.

Well, actually, all of the DC heroes are owned by Warner Bros., so, theoretically, a Justice League movie is more likely to happen, than, say, Spider-Man and Wolverine appearing in a sequel to the Avengers. And since Nolan’s version of Batman is strictly confined to his trilogy, which is ending, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel might just start a DC movieverse. But given their track record with everything that isn’t Batman, it’s probably going to suck balls.

As far as I know, there’s been word of another six related movies after the Avengers as some of the actors have stated they’ve been contracted for them.

Did you know the writers of  Transformers 2 and 3 are the executive producers on the  new Transformers cartoon?

Spoony; to answer your question on Black Widow’s man-handling ( on the chance no one else has said this yet): Part of her back story is that she has a version of the syrum originally given to capt. america. All be it, hers is not the original formula and somewhat deluted.

The Shadowy people that sit in poorly lit rooms that secretly rule the world took me out of the movie a little bit because it reminded me too much of the council Gendo Ikari reported to in Neon Genesis Evangelion.  Other than that, this was a great movie.  It had action, a few laughs here and there and something many action movies forget about…character development.  As you stated in your review it does everything right that the Transformers movies did wrong.  Hopefully, those in hollywood will try to copy the things this movie did rather than try to imitate Michael Bay. (God does Battleship look like it will be a steaming pile of week old penut filled elephant shit!)

Shadowy council are off course illuminati, based on the real world so thats why its not explained. Why would you buy into a president? everybody nowadays knows presidents dont hold any power….

Actually the secret society guys that Nick Fury talked to are in the comics, especially the ones that come out just before Avengers, which was made to lead up to the Avengers movie. It’s kind of poorly done that way, but I look at it like this: All three Star Wars prequels didn’t work on their own because you had no idea who anyone really was. However, if you had read the comics, followed all of the CG episode of Clone Wars, and read press releases, and played the video games that came out, you understood things better. The same thing happened with the Matrix. If you played the beat the game, the second and third movie made more sense. It’s one of those poorly marketed things that are made to bring in more money.

The Shadowy people in the rooms are supposed to be members of the UN Security Council. As SHIELD is under the jurisdiction of the UN, it makes sense they would be Fury’s bosses.

Yeah, it be pretty hard to get a justice league movie, you would have to get the people who own the right to batman, Warner bros, with the superman people, Warner bros and the people who have the right to Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash, Warner Bros, Warner Bros and Warner Bros, respectively. Then you need to get these people to talk with the people behind DC, Warner Bros. :P

WB apparently wanted to try and create a DC movie universe like Marvel did, eventually making a Justice League flick, but Green Lantern kind of ruined that plan. Hal Jordan is a dick.

Awesome, I’ll be sure to go see it! I think the only movies I’ve seen in this series so far are the Iron Man movies, but I loved both of those so I was planning on seeing this provided they didn’t fuck it up (which I too was worried about, although no one else seemed concerned). I gotta say, it’s always a treat to hear you talk about a movie you actually liked. You really come alive and give such great arguments when you’ve enjoyed yourself, and you’ve actually convinced me to see several movies that I would have never considered watching on my own. Thanks for that. :)

I can’t wait to see the Prometheus, trailer for this movie looks so awesome and Michael Fassbender as a blond android is probably the best cast idea ever.
There’s still a whole feek before I’ll see the Avengers and I don’t know what to do with myself right now. Anyway, my favorite Avenger will always be Ironman, I love how Robert Downey Jr portayed Tony Stark. I even liked Thor because it contains Loki and this guy I simply adore even if in the Avengers he’s only a crazy villain who wants to take over the world (still, I think he’s so much more than that) and Spoony really should cosplay him with horns and everything. Plus agent Coulson definitively deserves more love, he’s this kind of a character who has only a few short scenes for each movie he was in, but each time he leaves a great impression and it would be so cool to see more of him in the Avengers.

I was SOOOO expecting you to bash this movie so when you started I was “Oh no! Come on, you can’t be serious!!!”. Yes. Yes you did get me. You lil’ sum’bitch, you happy??? In all seriousness, it’s kinda cool that you played on that, great joke to start the review with!

I was a little hesitant because of Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods.  I kinda forgive him for Aliens Resurrection. Buffy, Angel, and Firefly was where I will always remember Joss Whedon being strong

But like any Marvel movie especially one where the final battle took place in NYC, I keep half expecting a dozen other super heroes of the Marvel universe jumping in. Spiderman, the X-Men, Fantastic 4.

Also I think they overpowered Hawkeye and Black widow  alittle too much as well as underpowering Captain America. I think they did this so Hawkeye and Black Widow don’t look laughably weak compared to the others but I still think they over did it. That was only gripe about an othewise awesome film.

I really like Spoony’s comparison of The Avengers movie with the Transformers movies.  The Avenger is what the Transformers movies should have been. 

Hey Spoony, A little trivia for you: The Battleship movie was optioned with a variety of other game-based movies, including….  Magic:The Gathering

Thats right: there could have been a Magic the Gathering movie… and we got battleship instead… Think about that.

Actually, in reality the Justice League was probably easier to make into a film than the Avengers was.  Unlike the Marvel properties, all the Justice League characters are owned by one company- Time Warner.  So, it would be very likely to see Wonder Woman and Batman and Superman and Green Lantern and Flash and Aquaman in one movie altogether.  It’s just that the studio itself probably wanted to develop other properties and other films itself.  Marvel studios has the benefit of devoting all it’s attention to their Marvel properties.  Warner Brothers has a whole slate of films to look over and release throughout the year, and banking a LOT on a bunch of separate properties that might not fly (Just look at the reaction to Green Lantern last year) is a risky venture.

If I recall, the slate on the Battleship trailer said “From Hasbro, the company that brought you Transformers.” Because they had to say SOMETHING to make people want to see such a fucking terrible movie.

Gonna correct you on the Justice League thing… that might have been true a long time ago, but these days, WB owns the movie rights to pretty much the entire DC catalog.  That’s one of the perks of being part of a massive media conglomerate.

Yeah, there was an article on Cracked.com a few weeks ago that mentioned that whole “What were you expecting from an action movie?” non-argument, and the writer countered it with “A GOOD action movie, like Die Hard.”

This is the best Vlog on Avengers that I’ve seen so far, I liked all that spontaneous indepth comparisons to Transformers.

The reason that I liked the Thor movie was because of Loki’s character arc. He was such a great villian, you’re never sure when he was lying or telling the truth in any of his scenes.

It would make my day if you cosplayed as Loki in one of your videos. OMG that would be so awesome! *squee!*

OK maybe I’m hallucinating but I’m fairly sure the Shadowy Council of People who Sit in Poorly-Lit Rooms and Secretly Rule the world are (a) canon with comics and (b) I THINK established in an earlier movie… Iron Man 2? Maybe I’m going crazy but I was like “oh those guys”. I mean it’s a bit silly but the whole poorly lit rooms thing is visual shorthand and it didn’t bother me.

I think Mark Ruffalo was OK but Ed Norton was better. He seemed a more natural Bruce Banner and it is jarring to have a completely different guy be one of the main heroes. I also think Terrence Howard should have been kept as War Machine, he seemed a better fit (no dis to Don Cheadle because he is good too).

Oh, and I thought Captain America was a very good movie. And the Cap gets a bit of development in this – like when he’s like “we’re soldiers we follow the mission” and then he starts questioning that. It’s his development in comics too, being less blindly patriotic. It’s minor but it’s enough so he’s not flat. Also he learns to trust his teammates which is I think the biggest theme in the movie.

You probably didn’t like Captain America because the main hero of the film is the least gray of the heroes. He’s clearly Lawful Good, to steal a D&D term, unlike most of the other heroes who tend to be more like Chaotic Good.

Avengers is Transformers in production and scope. Difference being that 1)avengers is not blatantly stupid 2) Transformers is about useless and insulting comic relief 3) Robots in transformers are seemingly the same 4) Battles are made for something, not just to give the animator a possibility to jerj off to his quad core computer.

when i saw the full trailer of Prometheus i was like hey was that the space jockey? i think it is. i really want to see it on fact of how well they define the timeframe. on terms of the avengers i loved it, i saw it 2 times and almost want to see it again…have to let my body recover. i liked each portrayal of each character. the actors fit the roles they got casted. loki was a big surprise on how well they expanded his role and made him really a force that was unpredictable. would recommend this film to anyone. that harder thing is how well the other superhero movies are going to be later this year. the little details they put in makes it a really good movie.

What? You don’t like Captain America? He’s not defined? He’s 2D? No, he’s a super soldier that will always be the skinny wimp from Brooklyn deep down. He’s humble and has a strong sense of justice and morality.

The Avengers is good because it isn’t Transformers?  Seriously?  That’s what we’ve descended too?  There is such a thing as having personally objective standards of quality. 

No, Avengers is not a bad movie, and it definitely hit it’s stride but jesus was it painful getting there.  And while I actually like Joss Whedon as an artist, the Avengers embodied everything that is annoying about his work.  All the characters sounded the same, none of his villains had any degree of menace or suspense and he killed off a likeable side character just to make things “real”.

Plus while I expect comic book movies to have some similiarities with their source material, this movie stole the worst bits of comic book cliches: characters fighting whenever they meet, humanity standing up against the tyranny of villains in a really cheesy manner, incredibly telegraphed plot points (Stark “on the wire”, any of Hulk’s stuff)  and boring action scenes.  Seriously, this movies beginning was BORING, and while it did pick up at the end, you never really got that much of a feel for the characters, or maybe the characters are just that boring.

Really glad Spoony brought up the Transformers connection. My reaction after coming out of Avengers was one of jealousy that as a life long Transformers fan we didn’t get this for our franchise.

Oh and Totally was thinking of Spoony as Loki, particularly in the Germany Scene.

Shame to hear that you didn’t like Captain America. That was my third favorite of these movies (behind the Avengers and Iron Man 1). 

One thing I didn’t like about this movie is the absence of something that you actually hated in Transformers. Where is the military? We see alien invaders, but the equipment and soldiers they bring aren’t particularly impressive- like you said, three relatively normal humans with very inefficient weapons (Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America) slaughter a bunch of Chitauri infantry and hovercraft, and those big dragon worm things are taken down by the Hulk using kinetic force, Iron Man with explosives, and Thor with lightning. Why the Council of Shadowy People Who Sit in Poorly Lit Rooms and Secretly Rule the World immediately resorted to a nuke rather than send in an army is beyond me. 

I like the Avengers more than i liked the new Batman movies. Avengers seem to be unashamed by the source material. The story is simple and doesnt have ethical problems because the comics didnt have that. Its not stupid and simple because of lack of craftsmanship. Its basic and “stupid” by desing, its exactly what it was meant to be. It has several problems. Hulk self control is completely random, The arguing scene in the labs had several forced lines and the last fight scene lacked weight.

Then again, perhaps it was meant to lack weight. Heroes are heroes, heroes win, villains are weak and will always, always lose – thats the point I think. It was exciting, but not nerveracking just like an episode from a cartoon would be.

Also loki is a relatively weak enemy precisely because the movie is planned for sequels. If the first avengers dealt with ultron or thanos then there would be no way to add more drama to next movies.

I actually did like it, I wasn’t blown away, but I would see it again if I wasn’t so darn cheap. Just the fact that I DID see it in theaters is something. I only had two gripes (no spoilers). Why… THE HECK… Couldn’t Scarlet fake a Russian accent? Was it really that hard? And why… OH WHY… Did they write a single line of dialogue between Nick Furry and Agent Hill whose sole purpose was to undermine the Avenger’s motivation? One thing you touch on though was how well the characters were played. The interactions between them were “real” in that the humor, respect, and anger flowed naturally.

Went to see it recently. And I agree with Spoony that Captain America seems to get showed up in this film. He is sort of the leader but he is constantly getting his ass kicked all movie. Where as Iron Man/Hulk are basically doing all the big stuff. Thor an the others are just kind of there for the ride. Well I guess Black Widow does play a big role in the end. Loki seems like a really weird choice of villain to me. He works but he doesn’t seem that threatening. You never get the feeling he could actually take on the Avengers. Especially after what Hulk does to him. But the bit during the credits makes it seem like they might get a real challenge in the sequel.

Mind you, this comes from Joss Wheadon fan. I saw the ,,Avengers”. Well, it was very mediocre film. To say something positive about it: humor was genuinely funny – it’s nice to see humor that is not Michael’s Bay’s profanity filled, childish humor – interaction among members of Avengers was mostly good, characters were well played, special effects were good. That was good, now what was bad? Story and plot oh, story… It was vey predictable and simplistic. Hear, I will spoil the movie for you: Loki steals magic cube. Avengers are hired. Loki is captured. Loki escapes. Epic battle. Loki is captured and magic cube is taken back. Where’s the great plot in that? I think people are so used to crappy Hollywood movies that they’ll regard anything as great nowadays… What’s even worse, characters are lacking depth, they are one dimensional and uninteresting, so is really hard to care about them. Only one who was semi interesting was Black Widow, with her backstory, and dr Banner. A lot of action scenes were pointless – they didn’t move the plot forward, and they were devoid of tension, it’s hard to care when you know your heroes are invincible/not going to die because the script says so. In one scene Thor was literally dropped from the sky, and after that he just stand up like nothing happened. There are more scenes like that in the movie. If heroes are so indestructible, how can I care about them – I don’t know if they can be killed? What I like about Joss Wheadon’s works, is that there always are consequences in his stories, Avengers are free of consequences because they are practically unkillable. Yes, agent Redshirt died – who he was, and why I should care about him? And there was a little tension concerning Tony’s Stark’s in the finale but other than that… By the way Tony is the only character who have something resembling character arc, rest of them are unchangeable, and that make them even more boring. Big bad was rather pathetic than minacious. Loki was pathetic. He is only puppet used by aliens. Oh, yes alien invasion… oryginal.
Maybe it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either – mediocre at best. Frankly I’m little disappointed

 Funny how you didn’t mention what was, in my opinion, the best part of the movie: the humor. Yes, maybe the story wasn’t too deep, and like Spoony said it didn’t have to be, but because the movie was so fucking hilarious, I couldn’t care less. It was typical Iron Man humor, which I liked very much. My favourite scene in the movie: Hulk and Thor are kicking the alien’s ass, then for a second when all their enemies are down, both take an epic pose, before Hulk punches Thor in the face just like that. It was so funny!

I actually really like Captain America and thought that the Captain America movie was the best, apart from Iron man. I like him because of the message he portrays: the most important aspect about a hero is not his supernatural strength or his advanced technological gears, what matters most is bravery and courage. Steve Rogers before his experiment was a nobody who wasn’t even mediocre, but weak. And even in that state he stood out because of his bravery. I also like him, because I think his fighting style is cool. His shield shows that he’s not an attacker, but a defender, and if there were real superheroes, I would want them to protect me before anything else. Just my opinion ^^

Nothing spoiled if you’ve seen the trailers:

I really enjoyed this film, and I felt that since this is the kind of
movie that has so many main stars, it practically lives or dies on
character interaction. It had the potential to be very confusing and
hammy, and it required so much back-story just to stand up, I felt it was
doomed to fail. Considering that, it was really good. The ham was nearly unnoticeable because the dialogue didn’t take itself too seriously.

 The character interaction was masterful, and there are a few moments
that stand out that really work with contrasting character qualities.
There was Captain America, who managed to skip the Nixon era of disillusionment with the government, having to deal with Tony Stark, who is the most anti-authority member of the group. Black Widow, unarguably the most level-headed character, having to take care of Bruce Banner, who is practically a walking nuke. It was awesome.

Actually, you’re wrong about the Intellectual properties being owned by different people. Now, that’s certainly true of Marvel, as they sold many of their properties to different companies (Spiderman to Sony, Fantasy Four, X-men and Daredevil to Fox, and so forth), but DC is owned by Warner Brothers, who control the movie rights to all of their characters.

To be fair on the Justice League comment, that’s partially true here as well.  Both Spider-Man and Wolverine were also supposed to be Avengers, but Sony and Fox own the rights to those movie franchises currently.  Marvel lucked out in that they didn’t give away *too* many of their characters before opening their own movie studio (as far as I remember, just Spider-Man, X-Men, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four)

Loki definately did the look weak when strong bit in this movie. There was no way he was going to just keep Earth and hand over the tesseract. He would have most likely kept it for himself and betrayed his allies. It would give him the power he needed to retake asgard.

Just a small gripe near the start (Otherwise, great vlog, as always) but Oo-rah is marines, not navy. I’m Army aviation (Not the toughest motherfuckers, but we still get shit done) and this site’s what I use to cheer me up after a shit day. Thanks a ton Spoony.

I disagree on Hawkeye and Black Widow. Look at their kill counts and what they faced. Iron Man could not kill the giant worm thing, but still fought it ( luring it) they never even came close to that level of unit.

I actually think the Avengers was super mediocre, and I loved Cabin in the Woods as much as Drag Me to Hell
