One day in Sunday school when I was like nine, our teacher got sick so another one came over and put on one of these tapes for us. Then he left.

15 minutes in we were laughing like loons and had dubbed Bibleman “Captain Planet’s retarded brother”. Then we dug out some VCR game that had a tape with old monster movie clips (no idea why that was in my church) and watched that for the rest of the time.

      Not sure I understand the jump from dogmatism to Jehova’s Witness. You might be thinking of just proselytizing. Some of the most dogmatic groups are some of the least eager to convert. It has to do with the reasoning behind the beliefs, rather than how forcefully they are spread.
      
      But since you bring it up, don’t you think there’s an important difference between believing (or not believing) something whilst doing evil, and doing evil because of your belief (or non-belief)?
      
      Mao was certainly an atheist (Stalin, not so clear), but do you think his lack of belief in deities motivated the actions you hold in contempt? We despise any number of historical leaders who were theists without pinning their actions on that theism unless they were evidently motivated by it; I don’t see why it ought to be different with an absence of theism.

      There are over 10,000 dominations of Christianity, over 50 of Judaism and over 20 of Islam. Even Buddhism and Hinduism have different sects with different beliefs not to mention Pagan and Wiccan faiths. The Bible alone has many different translations and different interpretations. Now this all might just strengthen some atheists conviction that theology leads to nothing but there’s the simple fact when you generalize you’re a fool.
      
      There’s way to much debate over religion anyhow. Judge by the person; atheist, agnostic or theist. Is it right to mock or look down on anyone just because there different than you? Considering what a raging success Bibleman was to curbing unwholesome teenage activity and creating a nation of puritanical children who don’t have sex before marriage (as evidenced by the US ludicrously high teen birthrates as compared to the rest of the civilized world today) it would be a huge waste of money and likely just drive the kids who were forced to sit through it to evangelicalism in revolt against their atheist parents in much the same way that Bibleman probably helped drive many teens forced to suffer through it away from their faith in defiance of parents. Not the ultimate reason but I would imagine a part for some.

Child programming tends to capture the hearts and minds of children better when the adults who make it aren’t operating under the assumption that children are idiots.

Most bible related programming I grew up with when visiting the more religious side of the family was total crap but the old Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (the cheesy ones made in Europe not the new ones) and the Voyage of the Dawntreader my grandma got and let me watch was stuff I really enjoyed and pushed the same overall story that these shows pushed. They were cheesy, sure, but so was Dragonstrike and I watched that a lot too.

If I were to choose a non spiritual/religious parralel it would be the difference between The Golden Compass (which is formulaic, intellect insulting tripe) versus Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (which was great and basically became an oft mentioned cult classic in the same vein as Monty Python in nerd circles in the US). There is a reason the latter is now a classic and the former a bad parody that barely tarnished the sheen of the late CS Lewis.

True, you can make decent religiously inspired children’s entertainment if you’re actually competent. There’s a lot of potential in the area, even some that I haven’t seen explored, I think. I think I prefer stuff that takes the ethical lessons and builds a story around those. Another good one is the whole hope thing where you show the protagonist go through hardships but stay strong in their heart and be rewarded in the end. That makes a good story. But not in the way that you just pray and God immediately makes all your problems go away like here. That’s bullshit and everybody who’s ever gone through tough times knows it.

I can’t say that I’m familiar with Bibleman but even if I had been, it would have pushed me to becoming a Satanist much sooner in my life. Really the only Christian-type movies I was familiar with as a kid were:

The old cartoon movie of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe; which I had NO idea was about Christianity until the first time I saw that Robot Chicken skit where they mention Asland being an allegory for Jesus. I just thought it was an entertaining fantasy movie where the talking lion was magically brought back to life through the power of Susan and Lucy’s tears!

We had a VHS from this series (not sure if it included this episode or not) in my house when I was a kid. My parents desperately wanted my brother and I to prefer christian-themed entertainment, but it didn’t work. I don’t think we ever watched it, I just remember the box sitting with the other tapes. Even at 10 years old I recognized a pile of garbage when I saw that purple and gold suit.

Why is it that people think think science and religion are opposed in some way and have to fight it out? The Catholic Church has been giving money to scientific research for CENTURIES – they have their own scientific institutes (Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Vatican Observatory, etc etc). Hell, the Catholic Church endorses the theory of evolution. Yes, really, and what’s more, the Vatican has never at any point in history *denied* the theory.

And that’s before we even get into how many universities, including Oxford (Now there is some irony, Pullman) and Cambridge, that have been built by the church.

The history being that the Church controlled academia until just recently, and silenced almost as many researchers as they funded. This, too, can be found by googling the history of the Church and the Seminary (Seminary for a time was used to refer to all places of higher education, back when they were all religious institutions.)

But let’s remember that The catholic church is made up of a great majority of groups and organizations, aside from the upper-topmost guys. For every Scholastic movement, there are also bookburning and anti sex-education organizations.

Religion only interferes when it comes to who controls the institutions of learning. For the matter of whether education is good or not, religion has almost no affect on what views a person will have, only what they’ll use to justify them.

Christianity is a dressed up version of common sense.

Christianity implies that all we see and know was created by a creator and at the end off the day this is correct.
If you go to the start of everything something did have to start it be in a chemical reaction or a fluke of nature or whatever but something caused the very very start of the thing that caused the start and common sense dictates that is your “god” he has to exist…. however

god may not be a living thinking being or even a being it is just the start and the fact we do not know what that start was gives way to the rumours and the speculation to turn it into an event that can shape the population to its will.

you present a forever unknown fact that cannot be proven and impose a pleasing idealogy mixed in with the opinions that you and your mates personally feel creates a utopia.

you then write some form of document explaining the ways in which your opinion makes the most sense and do it in a way that sounds credible which is without a doubt the product of the most intelligent people in the era as intelligence is merely the product of how much respect the person using it commands.

that’s why people who get told stuff by their parents or teachers believe it because it’s the person they believe to be right humanity does not often go to the effort to research the actual answers intelligence is more about who you believe at face value and what you remember which is why multiple books and authors publish work about the same topic everyone takes in knowledge from the individuals speaking it and trust the most.

Therefore most religion is damned to cycle around spreading among those who choose to believe what they have been told and each version and why converting people is never going to happen en masse as there is no longer the fear and the intelligent minority leading the masses as everyone can now seek and obtain knowledge.

Put bluntly it’s the media and shows like this that try to swindle the minds of people to ignore knowledge like science and try to stop people challenging the opinions of what they see in the world other than Christian techno babble that is isolating people from taking the religion seriously as it just comes off as uninspired repeating of a simpler time.

be a Christian or not personally i don’t mind either way but if your going to devote your life to religion or live a life forsaking it understand the proper origins of what you are forsaking.

Christianity when done right is not about what you believe about good and evil it’s better to use Christianity as a source to inspire you to do good and i do respect the religion for giving people a method to live their life doing good where they otherwise may be lost and confused like in the aftermath of a life tragedy or disability or the like.

Christianity and all religions are tools to try to persuade people to follow a certain method to a general utopia and the rivalry all stems from disagreements about what utopia even is

i hope that one day people will realise the path to a true utopia and an advancement of the human race will stem from being able to understand and empathise with people to the point the conflict eventually stops.

I myself have been asking difficult questions about the Catholicism to which I converted nearly fifteen years ago, mainly because I see…questionable materials which I try to question or just call out. You might see some of such posts if you were to look at my profile–for several reasons I am seriously working at slowly giving up on on it. The point is that I do not want to get into a religious debate at a time when I am asking questions and looking for truth wherever it is found. I will say that I still believe in Jesus Christ as the savior of souls and the Prince of Peace–and leave it at that.

Anyway, from the first frames shown, I knew this would be dorky–but I didn’t think it would be THIS dorky! I commend Jones for making poking fun at the video itself instead of the Scriptures (which I admit demand very nuanced exegesis). It is indeed a silly man wearing a silly costume acting silly. The cameo from Doctor Insanso was a great treat!

The USSR was only secular in that that it didn’t believe in god it was still extremely dogmatic and centered around worship of goverment authorities.

    The Communist system is a religion in itself, especially in its Soviet incarnation. It requires people to have faith in the system and the dogmas of the Party, even when your eyes tell you that things aren’t how they say they are. Whole fields of science were banned in the USSR because they didn’t fit in the Communist ideology, including Darwin’s theory of evolution. They had quite a lot in common with Christian fundamentalists, actually.

Well, its Russian Orthodox, we have our own Patriarch, different from the Greeks and such. ’Eastern Orthodox’ is like saying ‘Protestant’ The Soviet church was a shell and the Soviet leaders were cronies of the party. Most churches were made into things by the government like the Museum of Atheism or into mundane things like storage building for opera houses, if not destroyed. The state was officially atheist and while religion was ‘tolerated’ (Stalin did this in the war to encourage more people to fight harder) you had to declare yourself an atheist to start the path of being a party member. So if you wanted to be anything in life you could not be religious.

    15% of the members of the National Academy of Scientists, a collection of the greatest minds in the US, are religious. So, regardless of how silly the concept of religion is, to assert that stupidity is a prerequisite for accepting said concept is empirically false, otherwise that percentage would be 0. If a scientist doesn’t let his/her personal beliefs interfere with his/her career in discovery and uncovering the truths of our universe, what’s the harm in him/her having a religion?
    
    I suspect that believing in a personal god is more of an emotionally-driven action rather than an intellectually-driven one. And you know what? So long as religious people don’t try to force their beliefs on others, we atheists shouldn’t force our worldview on them. Agree to disagree, and move on. The type of judgmental attitude you have is the exact same intolerance exhibited by evangelical theists, and I’ll bet that you’ve lambasted them in the past for it.

And while I have been bothered by evangelists, I don’t get in their faces and tell them to shut up while spitting at them. That was the premise of what I was saying; I’m well aware of the horrible things that has occurred throughout history as a result of religion.       Religion, especially the most prominent one, Christianity, has a history of promoting intolerance, bigotry, slavery, ignorance and irresponsibility. Any of the good things that it may promote or so very easily overshadowed and outnumbered by the horrible things that it teaches.
      
      If you really wanna see why some people have such an attitude with religion, just read the entire Bible itself, start to finish. That’s how theists tend to lose their faith. Otherwise, they twist it around to keep it.

Let me describe it for you. I live in Texas, a state where you find religious clubs all over the place, where they do XYZ while reading scripture. Have you heard of the Saint John Luke Basket Weaving Club? Stuff like that is everywhere in Texas.

And when you tell them your an atheist, they look at you like you’ve got a third arm:

“What the hell is this? That only exists in theory, or somewhere in Europe, right? Oh well, I’ll tell him that he’ll eventually find the right path. This is probably a temporary thing anyway. He’ll find God soon enough!”

At least all these religious organizations they aren’t as aggressive as the one or two Atheist Clubs in every college. I would rather someone hand me a flyer then get on a megaphone when I’m trying to eat lunch. College sucks sometimes.

  I go to a branch college up in ohio. It’s pretty cool because you get all types up here. I have friends who are atheist, muslim, agnostic, buddist and christians like me. Everyone is actually really respectful about these matters up here. It really teaches a lesson in tolerance, that everyone believes different things but still deserves the same common respect from their fellow man. I kinda went of on a tangent there but it sounds like your problem George is that you probably go to a main campus. lol

    You will find many still living there. Not to be confused with Christian scientists, of course, who do the creationism business, but many come from different walks including biochemistry and physics from the list provided of those still alive.

To be fair, when you get raised on hardcore hellfire and brimstone in an area where you can follow signs to the nearest church that handles rattlesnakes as part of the Sunday service, it does tend to make one a bit louder than the crowd when you come out of it.

And I don’t resent religion, or even Christians, just Christianity. Even then, I only seem to target it quite a bit because, well, I was so close to it and still live in an area where it’s by far the biggest dog on the block.

I mean, I do believe there is a God (perhapse not exactly in the Abrahamic sense, but that there is something more to the universe) and I do the whole lent thing (though more for self control reasons), but I don’t really go to church that often. Although, I do occasionally do church based charity work (usually volantior work at the homeless center).

This series might not be as “hateful” as Rock It’s Your Decision, but I still see this as a harmful propaganda piece designed to make children stupider! It’s literally telling kids in it a few times to not listen to their teachers(or anybody) when it comes to stuff like science, history, and politics! And all this from a guy if I recall right was a junky only about 5-6 years before these videos were being made!?
I had a RoboCop toy too as a kid but it wasn’t a movie figure it was one from the 90s cartoon show because it was I think the Space themed RoboCop because he was solid White(There were like 4 of them in these toyline a Blue one for water, a Red one for like volcanoes or some BS like that, and a regular Grey one) with a missal-launcher for an arm! It had a removable helmet and chest plate! I watched the RoboCop movies heavily edited for TV as a kid! I watched the cartoon shows and the live-action series later on! I wish they’d release those on DVD someday! I miss those old toned down cheesy series based on a hard R-rated movie franchises they made back then!! It’d be like if they were to make a Prometheus cartoon series after the movie comes out!!

Actually interestingly enough, in the bible Elisha (the bald man) was a prophet of God in the old testament, basically they were the “Jesus Light” they had the power by God to perform miracles. A good use of this power was when he helped the widow of a former prophet Obadia to pay of a debt she owed to a powerful family. All she had of value left was a small container of oil. Elisha told her to barrow as many pots as she could, and then start pouring the oil into the pots. The story continues that the original container of oil did not run dry until the final borrowed pot was filled. She then was able to sell all the oil to pay of the debt and also had a supply left over to keep her family financially secure.

However since this is a man, not actually Jesus, when he cursed the boys, it may have been a slight on his fault, a failing of his own spirit. God basically said “Hey, you cursed them, now I have to fulfill it.”:

The difference between religion and a pink shirt is that religion is significant to the believer. It contains rules to live life by, and is often a huge moral guide in the early years of life. People aren’t going to respond well to “Oh by the way everything you believed in since birth is a lie, and your also stupid for believing it”.

You usually can’t argue with religion, no matter what your argument is. I say this as a fellow atheist who (when I was younger) tried to convince other believers to question their faith, with almost no success, because they feel too strongly to even approach the debate.

So, now that I’ve explained why this debate is futile, can we just stop?

Whether you’re for or against the truth of any religion, either way you’ll have to fall back on a premise that no human can verify: whether or not gods exist, and what their natures are.

      I understand that people use religion to create morals. They make an illusion that they have to be in a certain way, or they will be punished or banished by the illusion. Reasoning is just as good if not better, you don’t need a god to have great morals. I believe I have always talked about people who insist that a god figure is above everything, when it can be anything. When asked why religious people are religious, strongly skeptical people like you launch into a tirade of insulting insinuations on the sanity and the intellect of the people involved or you assume they do it for comfort or for morality. Granted, most faithful do little to stem this view as many never really think much about it themselves.

What is it that seperates the Christian who becomes and Atheist from the Atheist who becomes a Christian? Can you answer? I doubt it. I would wager, though, that there is far more nature involved than the nurture argument that is popularly tossed around. I know that the 100% nurture side of the argument is a more comfortable one – who wants to admit that the idea of spirituality maybe biological. To the religious, it cheapens their feelings of being special and to skeptics it means you will never convince the truly spiritual to give up their ways. They will never see the world the way you want them too. trying to explain your point of view becomes like trying to explain green and yellow to a colorblind person who sees them as gray.

Point is, if Brad Jones is spiritual, the scientists I mentioned before in the link, even myself then it maybe more biological than anything. You maybe an Atheist, not because you are smarter but because of your genes, pure and simple. Considering how completely religious and non-religious people seem to misunderstand each other, it seems the only rational explanation.

Well Pathfinder sucks. Its unintuitive, the sessions have no immersion, no one is in character etc.

But I like it that you try to get more people involved, that you try so spread what it means to have a nice roleplay session with your friends. How about you make a livestream with an easier RPG, with a boardgame? Im not talking Dragonstrike, but how about the Battlestar Galactica Boardgame?
