It’s the kind of thing that happens when someone in the story writing team has so little ideas they try to make all of them “big reveals”. So people, if you ever write a novel, movie or video game plot: use up your good ideas FIRST, then move on to the less obvious ones. It worked for LOST… Eh, maybe not the best example.

  A massive mob of rockstars and soldiers chasing after a Humvee (that had fallen under the map while running away from a group of demons) as a bunch of cat women (the kind who own a lot of a cats) tried to sing to them, all while an airline pilot protected them by punching secularists to death for trying to convert them to Satan.
  
  The chase lasted for about 5 minutes, circling about 4 blocks of New York City, and ended with a laser light show that left most of the people changing clothes and wandering around as if nothing had happened while the remnants of both forces (cat ladies vs. rock stars) resorted to hand-to-hand combat in an attempt to obtain control of a bank and a cafe. The cat ladies won, but they had to flee from a small group of tanks that were closing in on them. Thankfully, the tanks couldn’t pursue because they were blocked by a taxi and a lamppost.
  
  And just to clarify, no, the game in question isn’t nearly as awesome or fun as that may have made it sound.

As far as i remember Melvin the Wizard, according to the books in his tower, was researching a flight spell so he could fly like a bird.
Unfortunately while he actually can fly like a bird now his mind seemingly also changed to that of a bird, thats why he makes these wierd noises, he’s trying to chirp and sing like a bird.

If you play the game look closely at his animations his basic animations, like sitting on that pillar where he moves his head and how he flies, waving his arms around.
Then go search for “real” birds in the game and watch them, their animations are pretty close to what Melvin does, like nodding with their heads when they sit somewhere.
Of course when Melvin does it it looks totally ridicilous ^^

Its a really wierd part of ultima 9 but i always laugh when i encounter him.

I think what happened with this game is that EA was worried about new players being confused by the vast and rich back story. When introducing people to a strange fantasy setting, it’s common place to have a character called “The FNG” or “The Fucking New Guy”, who can wander around the land asking questions the creators think the audience will be wondering. Like “What’s the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom?” for example. If you’d never played an Ultima Game before, you might not know. It’s generally more natural to have the explanation in dialogue then blocks of text exposition. It’s just that usually when they do this, it’s with an honest to god new character that actually does need the situation explained to them. It’s a tried and true cliche, fish out of water, get characters talking about what is usually just assumed. But for some unholy reason they decided to make the Avatar himself the FNG. In his own life. This is like if you woke up one morning and asked your mom what your laptop is. You can’t do it do an established character, they come out like a brain dead idiot or they got amnesia no one wants to mention. They shit all over a well established character, just because they were afraid some mainstream kids wouldn’t get the fantasy setting if everything wasn’t constantly explained to them. The decision is baffling beyond words with even the tiniest bit of thought behind it. It seems they were banking on new people being the vast majority of players of the conclusion to a long epic series. I think if you’re buying Ultima 9, you played at least one of the other 8. But even if you haven’t, having a hero wander around the land constantly baffled and confused by even the simplest concept like what a paladin is, is alienating at best. It’s literally the worst way to get that information across. If they felt this deep seeded need to constantly exposit about everything already established in the game world, a better move would have been a derpy side kick that had never been to Britannia or something. It would have been annoying, but not quite such a betrayal.

Some more subtle failings of the approach taken in U9 are that the game was rated ‘M’ and required a hand-built, cutting-edge gaming rig to even run at the time of release. Do you really think that those people have never heard of a paladin?

You can introduce new people without making the protagonist look like an idiot.For example,mass effect did it well.When something is unknown to the player in a dialogue,you get shepard explaining it,instead of the npc.So instead of getting the avatar say that stupidity,clicking on “whats a paladin” you would get “My friend was a paladin,not me.He was true to the order yadda yadda”.The other way you can go is,again like in mass effect,the codex that you can access at any time that will explain the important concepts,and even give a voice-over or two for the most important things.

But developers often forget that the protagonist of the game can also be used to clue the player in.They forget that RPG means playing a role,not having an empty brick moving around.

This might be why Bethesda starts every Elder Scrolls game with a new protagonist who is a blank slate for the player to develop. This way you can ask the questions if you are new to the Elder Scrolls. The stupid questions are even optional since you can easily skip them if you already know the answer.

Meanwhile Bioware provides a handy encyclopedia of the game universe that is part of the pause screen so the detailed information isn’t a part of the gameplay.

Oh, Melvin. Truly, thou art mad, for only a man so stricken by madness would write only a few words on each page in what appears to be a very expensive journal from the gift section of Barnes and Noble.
That said, surely there are better ways to portray madness than to laze out and use unfinished animations and voice footage. It really comes across as a very lazy glitch. But, I guess the effect is good. I was genuinely freaked out when I saw it.

I hate to admit that I understood this, but if you pay attention to the book in Melvin’s room, I think the idea is that Melvin- a mad wizard -used Bluebird feathers as a component in his experimental flying spell and the experiment was a disaster- granting him flight but also giving him the mind of a bluebird in the process. The strange gesticulating of his arms seems to be his attempt at wing-flapping, the weird noises seems to be his attempt at birdsong, and if you watch he occasionally “perches” on the pillars in the room. The glitchy sounding speech is actually kinda funny once you understand that it’s supposed to be like birdsong- after all, what would a person sound like if they suddenly had the mind of a bird? I suppose they might repeat snippets of speech-sounds with weird intonation.

It should be obvious to anyone who’s watching your stuff that you care about making good quality stuff and nothing else will do. But you’re hardly what I’d call prolific.
Don’t get me wrong, what you do put up is excellent. It’s just that it would be great to have a bit more and a bit more often. Is that too much to ask?
In the early days, you almost put up as much stuff as the Cinema Snob on a monthly basis, and that was all good! Because Spoony fell off. He’s not as funny as he used to be. Instead of just playing a game or watching a movie and adding in his commentary that made you laugh, he feels that he has to use green screen and all these special effects and tired jokes that feel forced just to hold your attention. Which results in him taking longer to make videos spliced in with his very laidback(lazy) work ethics.
He hasn’t realized his best work was when he was just being himself and saving the props for the Thesbians. Most people admire his work of old not so much his work of new (which as you noticed isn’t so frequent). Mostly he’s just done V-logs galore and an actual video here or there. Like he did that Cyberhacker movie thing and then more ultima? Now that I think about it you’re right he hasn’t done much at all in the time frame he has to work with. I’m just surprised that I come here every 4-6 weeks and still see the same stuff up mostly.
If neglects his own website this badly I guess he doesn’t take being a critic or whatever seriously as a careerr or so it seems. I just hope he’s working on a bigger better life project if that’s the case. Sometimes being in the internet spotlight is too much pressure. Maybe he’s tired of it and just wants to live normal without feeling obligated to make videos all the time. I can understand and respect that too. He should just be honest with his followers and himself though. He doesn’t have the passion for this anymore. If he did he’d be posting new videos left and right. The truth is he’s just riding out the wave untill he figures out a way to break from all this.

But what the hell… here’s an example that might help this dawn on you. Marcus above fully acknowledged that Spoony’s recent content involves more work/time – you proceeded to rant as if he hadn’t acknowledged that point. That he must be some fool if he couldn’t see that Spoony produces less due to each video being of a higher production value.
      
      Marcus then also made an observation that Spoony just being Spoony, riffing on some game without high production values/methods is actually a lot more entertaining, and that if Noah realised that, there might be the potential for him to produce more content, and content that is funnier for it.
      
      The simple fact is, you’re viewing all of this as an attack on Noah, and acting as if he needs one of his rare few dedicated e-warriors to wave the flag for him. He doesn’t. The real shock horror is that we’re here because we ALL like Noah and his work, and your attempt at being his sole voice of true fandom is rather repetitive and pathetic.

      First off, thanks for at least attempting to be decent, but if we are going to talk about who the true troublemakers are. Let’s not look at the guy who is here with the fans when the video is posted making comments that relate to the video at the top of the page. Don’t you think that the true trouble makers are the ones who come around just to incite trouble by saying that Spoony sucks now because he isn’t giving them what they want. If you want more proof that I’m not alone, there was a tread on the forum made a few days ago saying that a person really liked Spoony and people assumed from the title “Dear Spoony” that it was going to be a cliche rant about how he sucks now. People responded to that with messages about how sick and tired they are of this argument too. Trust me i’m not alone, most of the others on my side see this comments section as “a wretched hive of scum and villainy” though.       The reason we are complaining about the drop off in production rate is because we LOVE Spoony videos, and we have been long time viewers of his show and don’t want to see it go down the pan. It’s not like we just want to bitch.
      I still go back and watch old Spoony videos, but to be honest, that’s all there is to do on here 99% of the time. New videos never come out. I’m not sure where the logic of saying “if you don’t like it, then don’t watch it” comes from. Nowhere are we saying that we don’t want to watch his videos. What we ARE saying is that if he wants to keep his viewers he’s going to have to step up his production speed. And not to be a troll, but in reference to someone with a good work ethic reviewing 11 games in a row, Razorfist reviewed all of the Silent Hill games except Downpour which wasn’t out at the time and the movie within a year within quick succession of each other. Now to be fair, that’s not exactly 11 games and he covered them all in 3 videos. He also covered the entire Deus Ex series in 1 video.

Okay, being an asshole didn’t work, so I’ll roll for diplomacy.

I agree with Captain that Spoony has gotten lazy and unmotivated about TSE. In fact, I agreed with that opinion about 2 years ago. Bringing me to my point, this isn’t a new opinion.

At this point, I think we’re all taking in circles here. We’ve all heard both sides of this debate, so if you aren’t convinced of a certain viewpoint by now, no amount of someone reminding you of that viewpoint will change anything. No further amounts of “Spoony is lazy” will convince anyone that Spoony is lazy, nor will any further amount of “Spoony isn’t that bad” will convince anyone that Spoony isn’t that bad.

No one is speaking because they think anyone is just UNAWARE that opinion existed in the first place. So why do we do it, if we know it won’t accomplish anything? That’s why I want this repetitive conversation to stop. Can we agree on that?

The reason for the constant “circle talking” is that more and more older fans notice his lack of updates, and decide to leave a comment, unaware that the topic happend a billion times already.

And Spoonys last fanboy Peatear doesnt want to accept that, so instead of letting those comments disappear into oblivion he just has to reply to them.

So one last time:

1. Spoony does hardly the stuff anymore we became fans for. Indeed he has completly given up on Lets Plays, which is really disappointing because we all know him first and foremost for “Phantasmagoria”, “SWAT” etc. etc.

2. WHEN he does something, like the really brilliant “Ultima” review series, he takes forever to do it. Ultima wasnt supposed to take two years to review. No one can tell me that.

3. NOTHING we post here is gonna change his behaviour. So there is no need to argue about it.

  What some of these guys like that Peater guy don’t get is that they spend 24/7 on these forums. Other people do not invest their time reading every single comment on here visiting the website every day. When someone posts something about the lack of videos it’s because of folks like myself and others who just lurk and click on the web page every month or so and see the same stuff so we comment occaisionally. We don’t spend hours in the comments going back and fourth.
  We just click the website, see the same vids and keep moving to something else. If you spend copious amounts of time invested in these chats sections of course you’re going to see the same topic pop up and it’s going to continue to pop up. Not everyone that comments about it is here every minute and every second of the day. There is no reason to be here like that when the website is basically stagnent and barely updated.
  It’s getting to the point where this place isn’t even worth visiting anymore. There’s no schedule, no updates, so it’s just random clicks wondering if something new is up and there hardly ever is. Now I’m not saying any of this to be malicious I’m just saying what I’ve experienced. I’ve found a lot of other reviewers I follow to get some laughs in just because Spoony doesn’t stay on top of his own stuff. No hate towards the guy but like anything you can be replaced and that’s what people do. If he’s not bringing the funny we just find someone else who does. When you want a laugh you’ll find it. If your hungry and one restaurante is closed you’ll go to another. If it’s raining and there’s no roof to stand under you’ll find another. It’s just how it goes.
