Great video and commentary, always look forward to your updates

anyway, I hate being one of those people on the internet that feels the need to point out every mistake or whatever
but I think you’d be interested to know this anyway: Captain America and the Avengers did come out on both the SNES and Genesis, but were only two player

the ports were okay, but I’m sure the Arcade version was better.

Never got into Sonic? Don’t blame you, everyone has their tastes. Half the fun is indeed memorizing levels then coming back and trying to run through the levels perfectly; it’s kind of a reflex practice thing. The other half, or rather halves, are the music tracks that usually ranged from pretty good to fucking awesome, the exploration which is actually pretty good and became increasingly vast between Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles despite the speed aspect, the colorful and stylish graphics of the stages and their various themes, and the simple but fun platforming action.

As for that portable Sonic game you’re talking about, it’s Sonic 2; no relation to the Genesis game of the same name. I had that game too and I didn’t particularly like it either. Believe it or not, the main reason why it’s so hard is actually because of the low resolution of the screen; there’s a Master System version of the game with slightly less colorful graphics but it plays a lot better because you can see a lot more stuff, including enemies and traps ahead, so you can actually see the first boss and its projectiles when you fight it.

I’m feeling bad for you Spoony. Your first Sonic experience was the megadrive (game gear) version?! Christ, I hope it wasn’t Sonic 2 for game gear. That game is almost impossible even with SAVE STATES. I’d be traumatized too.

I never found the speed in Sonic games to be a problem. AVGN said it made him sick. You really aren’t allowed to go fast unless the game places you on a relatively safe path ful of loop de loops, and the later games like Sonic 3 have a good deal more careful platforming involved.

If you’re referring to the “unlockables” in the Dreamcast games, though, that’s another story. I broke my ass beating time records and collecting all 150-whatever fuck all emblems, and my save file got corrupted (those VMU memory cards…love how easy it is to destroy your saves by tugging out the controller by mistake). I nearly put a boot through the tv.

It’s funny mentioning the whole crossover stuff – I only started watching AT4W because of crossovers with The Spoon Experiment. I don’t think Linkara is as good as The Spoony One, but he’s enjoyable to watch.

Sometimes I get peeved with Linkara / Nostalgia Critic reviews when the reactions seem very staged. Obviously, they all ARE, but often the camera shots linger on them too long with just them grinning. Fast paced editing greatly improves the impact of such scenes. One of the reason I like TSE reviews is because they seem very natural, even when they’re heavily scripted.

During some of the crossovers with Linkara/Doug, the same sort of “obviously scripted banter” goes on, and I find that they aren’t as enjoyable as they could be for this reason. There’s a lot to be said for the kind of Deadpan humor we see Noah go for most of the time. Snark is the only emotion displayed :)

When you speak of “sonic portable” did you mean Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which came packed in with some game gears or sonic chaos. I agree Sonic 2 is frustratingly difficult but sonic chaos is alot better IMO, I actually downloaded it off the virtual console (its under master system games). Although that game does have the lamest 1st boss in any game (Its a giant springboard bug thing that never attacks you) I have ever played but getting to play as tails as well as sonic was a big plus.

I love Dr. Insano (the name alone kills me ^^). But as you mentioned in one of your earlier videos, you should keep his appearances to a minimum (as you do), so that he stays special. That’s why the AVGN lost me: he just gave his “guest stars” too much screen time.
As for Linkara: he rocks! Nuff said.
You two and some others are what I would call the “professional Elite” of TGWTG! Stay classy and I’ll keep watching!

But I agree with DeathsHead419: give us a comment on this whole Film brain fiasco before it gets (even more) out of hand!

There’s actually a rather nasty debate over where exactly the waterpark from Bill and Ted was located, with about 3-4 places around here (LA) claiming to be the place. One of our (previously local, now national) sports radio shows actually had a day-long debate between callers over which park it actually was.

The Avengers game was awesome! Rented it for the Genesis a few times, and me and my sister played like crazy over like an entire weekend. I think we actually beat it, or at least got to the final boss.

I remember playing the Avengers on my best friend’s Sega Genesis, before I got my N64. And I got to be hawkeye a good bit, and hells yeah he was hardcore… ah, memories, also, I call shenanigans on lousy people who don’t like Linkara and Dr. Insano… Now NC… well… I don’t tend to enjoy his stuff as much as I used to.

Nice bit of commentary. You should totally do a review of the Game Gear Sonic. I remember beating it a few times but the most devastatingly annoying part about it was the game play was longer then the battery life. I would always get to the last level where you roll down the narrow corridors when the power would go out.

Dude! You’re right! Hawkeye was the major badass of those games. I don’t know why nobody else liked him other than, “Oh, he just shoots arrows. Whoop dee doo!” I think Hawkeye would probably be able to pull off the nailing-a-knight-to-a-tree bit that was in ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights’.
I’ve played the X-Men arcade game as well. I was actually in Wisconsin for that, sleeping inside of Eagle Cave, and they had the game set up in a game room outside the cave. That’d be nice to have at a party…or better yet, get the six player version. There’s also Revolution X…ya know, that game where you have to save Aerosmith with guns THAT SHOOT CD’S! I’d actually load quarters into both guns and dual wield. I thought that was bad ass the first time I seen that in Goldeneye for the N64. Trailing off like you do…
Sadly, never played the Spiderman game. I have Spiderman 2 on the Gameboy. Does that count?
Not much of a Sega fan myself…and, yes, it is level memorization. Uniracers pulled off that sort of thing on the SNES as well. I remember the Genesis for Rocket Knight Adventures, Comix Zone, and Kid Chameleon…and Sonic, obviously…and some game where you’re a brown gorilla. Played it once, but I’ll never forget it. In the battle of SNES vs Genesis, I would say the SNES wins, mainly due to sound quality on a lot of the games that were on both systems. Sure, Mortal Kombat had blood on the Genesis, but that’s what GameGenies are for. Back to the sound quality bit…yeah, ever play Street Fighter II on the SNES…and then play it on the Genesis? Oh dear god! How did they let that happen? That’s it. I’m gonna go play Mega Man X again. I will admit though…I did like some of the songs from the Sonic series. I know a few sites where you can get stuff like that, if anybody’s interested.
Finger nails to the throat! HAAA!!!

I love these commentary tracks, Spoony. I usually don’t like behind-the-scenes footage or commentary, but bits like this are cool because we get to know a little more about whoever’s in the video. It’s a neat seperation from “Spoony” to “Noah” and “Linkara” to “Louis.” Like a superhero revealing his secret identity (Yes, I went there.)

For what it’s worth, I like Linkara, though I have to admit I backtracked from you to Nostalgia Critic to Linkara. (I still remember the first time a friend showed me Samurai Zombie Nation; it wasn’t until months later we found out you had other stuff. Hurray for YouTube back then!) I like whenever crossovers happen because they’re interesting; as long as you guys are having fun, I think it ends up being fun for me too.

    Keep on keeping on.

Personally I loled at the single random title card. Not sure I would have found it as funny as a running bit.

I’m definitely digging this crossover stuff. You showing up in other peoples’ videos seems to instantly make them more awesome.

I had the Avengers game for Genesis, which originally was my theory for why you never saw it on home-consoles, but apparently it was also released on SNES. Hawkeye is epically hardcore, and what I always cite for that is the same fingernail trick.
Now, Sonic I’ve always liked, and didn’t have a problem with the level design or running into things all of a sudden, at least in the older games. That aspect has gotten MUCH worse in the handheld games, due in part to the fact that the speed of play is about triple of what it used to be, and they’re zoom’d in more, AND they’ve let their level design slip more and more as time went on. What I always love about new Sonic games is this: everyone in the entire Sonic universe is cooler, more interesting, more powerful, more something than Sonic. Tails, Ray, Charmy and Cream (best under-the-radar innuendo ever, thanks SEGA) can all fly, Charmy has a stinger, Cream has a battle-slave that rapes whatever you look at with the press of a button, even in the combat game attempt Sonic Battle, Knuckles is super-strong and can glide, sticks to walls, and has naturally spiked fists, Shadow cheatingly warps time and space on a whim, and so on, but the best, the BEST example is a recent character Blaze the cat. She can surround herself in a pillar of fire at will, has the manual dexterity to run in high-heel’d boots, can project the fire behind her to rocket forward like a comet or down to slow her decent when falling. What does Sonic have? He’s fast. Just like everyone else in the games. The gameplay is the same speed no matter what character you play as. Should not be the main character.

Well, I had no idea what that song was, but thanks to you and youtube I now a) know it and b) will probably have it stuck in my head for a while. Thanks a lot. :)

Also, it’s always nice to learn about people with parents who work(ed) at Boeing. Both of mine do/did.

Finally, crossovers are amazing and should happen as much as possible. The Alone in the Dark review was one of the funniest reviews I’ve seen because the three of you were obviously having so much fun reviewing together. By your powers combined!

That game that was never made, Star Trek V was reviewed by PlayitBogart. I haven’t seen much of his videos in a long time, but the ones he made were pretty good.

I had a hard time embracing Nintendo if nothing else than for the reason that as soon as it showed up in my house the Atari 2600 mysteriously vanished *cough* got sold *cough* and I sucked at using a D-pad. Going from controlling characters with my right hand to my left thumb just bit.

It would be interesting to know if the fotage from that Chicago Comic Con was released and if so, where.
I don’t remember seeing something like this sometime.
Dr. Insano at a Convention? I would remember this.

It’s weird, I never ever once saw a Turtles in Time arcade as a kid, yet everyone – even folks older than me (and I’m 28) remember playing some Turtles in Time arcade… I played the SNES game, sure, but as far as arcade games go, I only remember the original TMNT arcade found in pizzerias. And it was just about EVERYWHERE.
I tried finding a MAME rom for it – and found one labeled Turtles in Time – guess what – it was the original game.
Am I missing something here?? Why can’t I seem to find this arcade game that apparently EVERYONE remembers??
