Just thought I’d put a link to the commentary on the front page! I hope you’ll find it…illuminating.
Everything is better with Commentary!
Sweet, I always love the commentary.
Good luck moving to your new place Spoony, though, I will miss your old room.
I have been watching your Reviews since Samurai Zombie Nation, and I really think this was a worthy final episode of the FF8 review series.
I have a suggestion for you:
You told about how much you hate Final Fantasy 10 with the propably most pussy main charachter in any final fantasy game (yes, Tidus is way more of a pussy than Squall…)
But i assume that you have limited time, so my suggestion is to make a “Let’s play” of Final Fantasy 9 (!!!)
It’s a really good game, it has none of the whole junctioning-bullshit, and you propably would have much fun playing it. And even thought it is a good game, you could find many many funny things to rant about.
Please think about it!
Thanks for the Spoony Experiment and Greetings from Germany!!!
Glad that everything’s been working out for you despite all of the problems you’ve had recently, Spoony. I don’t know what I’d do if TSE shut down.
I’ll always miss your old room. It’ll be nostalgic as hell when you start shooting videos as you and your brother’s new place.
FF9 is SO much better than this. Best FF i’ve ever played (no I didnt play 6 yet, im waiting to)
Ed Glaser ? Press Start ? The guy who is infamous for his inability to find a quarter-decent artist in 300 million of people in US ?
Are his “good movies” the same kind of “good movies” James Rolfe does ? Yeah, today if someone buys a cheap camera – they’re suddenly an independent movie maker. Riiiight.
“FF9 is SO much better than this.”
FF9 has worse story/gameplay ratio than any of Metal Gear Solid games, and that says something. Its pretty much ALL story.
That was a nice insight to your current situation Spoony. I felt that the finale was a bit rushed (rushed in a sense that you basically bent time to have it over with) ;).
Good luck on future projects.
Nice one spoony!
Excelent! I love these commentaries, it’s great to get an insight on how you make this reviews.
Glad you got a new server and camera.
We all love you Spoony! Great work.
Can’t wait to see your new place. Since you’re rooming with your bro, it’d be cool to see him pop in a bit more for V-Logs and whatnot. I think the thing I’ll miss most about your room are the red curtains O_O lol. But perhaps you’ll take them with you. I bet it’ll be cool, I’ve always thought you could do much more if you just had some more space. Good to see everything working out after a rough last month.
Wow Spoony. I really enjoyed this. Keep up the good work man. I can’t wait to see the new set.
Brotip: If you actually bother to type out words the same way you talk, obnoxiously stretching out the vowels and whatnot, you’re a huge asshole.
Hey Spoony, will you be doing a review breakdown of Final Fantasy X and or X-2? ((You must! You muuuuust. XD))
Neat commentary. I had no idea there was so much backstory behind this video. I just thought things were getting more plot heavy and some sort of continuity was forming. Like I jokingly though “oh great, Emo Git is going to be a regular character on the Spoony Experiment now”
Recording audio over a video segment is called “dubbing” by the way
Really great commentary, Spoony. Very informative. Thanks for sharing it and for slogging through FF8! :)
Snoopy that review was hilarious, the commentary even seemed to match is awesomeness. Also yes if you want to see ANYONE screw ANYONE and I mean ANYONE EVER in amine you just need to write it on the search bar i mean like damn… its soo easy its even painful. but spoony already commented about that on his FF7 review.
Also congratulations on your new room man, i know how hard can it be to be an adult and still be with mum and dad.
I agree that finishing the review in one go was a good move. I hate it when people keep milking ideas and franchises forever.
The only sad part for me was there was not enough riffing in this one. I saw so many retarded lines of dialogue in the background that slipped by unmocked! But then again, you’ve done that and this fourth wall-style commentary was refreshing.
All in all, fantastic! You’re leagues ahead of the competition in terms of ambition, acting, writing, composition and not to mention George Lucas’ favourite: special effects!
“representative of the Umbrella corporation”
Oh my god, that really caught me off-guard. D: Great commentary, is there any chance of integrating Miles more into some reviews? I kinda liked him in the Transformers rant.
Spoony – congratz on everything, man – site is still up, Scarlett is fantastic, FF is OVER (and I do hope you aren’t coerced into doing any other FF vids, there are SO many other things to look at out there), you have a new place, and you have a group of loyal fans who DON’T INSULT PEOPLE THAT YOU SPEAK HIGHLY OF *cough Tomelin, get your shit together man*.
Great job, but the FF8 parts of this review really meant nothing to me – I enjoyed the hell out of the ‘storyline’ between you, Insano, Burton, Squall, and Linkara.
And I’m really lookin’ forward to what comes next.
These Behind the Scenes clips are always great. Thanks for posting it, man.
[FF9 has worse story/gameplay ratio than any of Metal Gear Solid games, and that says something. Its pretty much ALL story.]
Pretty mutch all japanese rpg’s are all story, think about it. Do you ever do anything else aside from wheeling the chars around from one cutscene/dialoge to another. all one does in a j-rpg is to take over for the combat
Yes it’s blatantly stolen from ZP. But i dare you to prove me wrong. Not that i would care if you do.
But misunderstand me correctly, i do like a good story.
@Lydius July 19, 2009 at 4:39 am
I completely agree.
People can blame Western RPG’s for almost always being in a medieval setting, but at least you have a sense of being the main character. There’s still the suspense of disbelieve that YOU are the hero, not that you’re some sort of god just guiding the main character with the power of your controller.
Good luck with your move, and hopefully the new-and-improved Experiment will continue soon.
Yes. I love audio commentary. you are the content master. I will miss your old room but in the new place you could put the bookcase, the chair and Burton In a corner just like before.
Very insightful, hope everything goes ok with the new Camera and Moving and all. Also your mystical sound effect is use a metric-fuck-ton of times in a show that was on a few years back Megas XLR. it was used in pretty much every Episode.
I think the thing about the ending people think you missed is when Squall makes a short stop on his time travels at his childhood to see Ultimecia turn over her powers to Edea. It seems to suggest that’s how Ultimecia came to possess her in the first place, and why Edea started SeeD to begin with. ‘Course, it could mean absolutely nothing, but I like to think the real course of events just went over the characters’ heads. It’s a nice change from having the villain/oracle/whatever explain how everything fits together right at the end.
Oh, and that song is fucking horrible. I hope you didn’t seriously expect people to sit through the credits with that pile of putrid mucus dribbling down our ears.
Great commentary. It was nice to hear the much hyped back-story on this one.
Everyone seems to want another Final Fantasy review… I’d rather see Kingdom Hearts (Mostly game number 2) get a kick in the balls, seriously, I enjoyed it, but the story just sucks… And so does the Tarzan and Atlantica worlds! Even the Tron world was bad.
Or how about a Resident Evil 1 review? Just for the nostalgia of the worst voice actors ever :P
I repeat the constant (and well deserved) praise, I love your commentaries. As Doug says; you are a naturally funny guy. Gongrats for moving out of your parents house, I am so glad things are looking up for you = )
Thank you Spoony, Scarlett and Ed Glaser for keeping the site running!!!
Perfect. You tied up all the loose ends and everything except one…
What about Burton???
Also, it’s great to hear you have such awesome friends.
RE1 review would be funny. “Whheerrreee’s Barry?”
Um, you mentioned that you’re doing the FF8 commentaries in the wrong order. Commentaries? PLURAL?
That, my dear fellow, is unbelievably amazing and I heartily thank you for that.
Same goes for this review, ’twas great and a very fitting conclusion to the series. Also, great to hear that you’re finally able to move out, although it’ll feel really alien to see you in some other room after all these years.
By the way, how is it possible that even though you passed out/died/whatever by the bed before the bomb went off, yet you were able to run from the explosion?
Congrats on the move out, hope it works out well. I’m impressed you made such an effort to tie up loose ends just incase you couldn’t continue. Too bad that’s not the case, you spent so much time on it hehe.
I’m shocked you don’t remember running into Raine at all. There isn’t any way to avoid her. You meet her in that Laguna sequence where he goes to Windhill (I can’t remember if that’s the name – it’s the place with the baby sounding music.) There you meet her because she apparently nurses him back to health after he and his friends go off the cliff. You find out there that she’s the mother of Ellone, that’s how she’s initially introduced.
It’s ok though. I’m assuming that you didn’t catch that because your eyes had rolled back into your skull by then as you twitched and foamed at the mouth. ;) Anyways, lots of fun to watch the commentary. Keep going!
You are right, the scar is on the rignt side, BUT… lool
…when your Dr,Insano you have the the walkietalkie on your left hand, but when you get up to say “GET OUT” its on your right hand =P
@Moccamonster July 19, 2009 at 5:21 am
Well, that applies to almost any game that ISN’T a WRPG (And why JRPGs aren’t “real” RPGs; no roleplaying). You’re just there to take control of the trusty sword/gun/army/whatever between story bits.
But I digress, awesome commentary. I’m the kind of guy who loves hearing inside information and comments from the entertainer (To the extent that I’ve watched the commentary track on almost every DVD I own.)
Spoony just lost some HP. No big deal.
Now I have Eyes on me in my head and every time I hear it i’m going to be thinking of you……..boy, that sounded gay :)
Love the commentary Spoony. I also sort of suspected the move. As you mentioned though I’m gonna miss your old room hehe :) But I’m also curious about your new place. Would be cool if you have the room to set up a little studio or something.
So, you’re moving in with Miles now, does that raise the chance to see him in upcoming reviews occasionally?
Don’t feel too bad about not knowing that wasn’t Julia at the end. The first time I played I think I thought the same thing. I had to play this game *repeatedly* to piece together all the different plot elements that the story was throwing out all over the place and how all the characters were connected. I think Square was trying to be a little too clever with this game and it came out rather disjointed. And this isn’t the first time they did this.
Best example is in FF7. There’s a flashback that Cloud can have but can only be activated after a certain point in the game and in one specific place. A place you wouldn’t think to go back to since the game never hints that there’s anything left there. It contains all the back story for the time after Sephiroth torched Cloud’s hometown and his journey to Midgar. This is critical information if you want any idea as to what makes Cloud tick but it’s not even in the mail flow of the game! It’s a freakin’ sidequest that you wouldn’t have any idea existed if you didn’t read up on it in a walkthrough. That Dude in the Suede even commented on this in his review for Advent Children. It’s bullshit!
Same with NORG in this game. His back story is explained in a sidequest too. A VERY tedious one that really has no payoff other than a few items and some plot points. In fact, this whole game is full of pointless sidequests, such as the Chocobo forests, getting the Poo Poo card which involves that UFO and the talking lake next to Timber, that only completists will care about. The only one I really cared about was the Deep Sea Research facility. At least there you got some extra GFs.
All in all, you did a great job. I think the time skip mechanism you used was a great parallel with what the game was doing to us. It’s also nice that the TGWTG community is there to help out. And you’re right, if you had continued with this series, going through all the major points, you’d be doing this for years. You’d be repeating the same jokes and gags which probably would have sucked you dry. Now it’s over and you can concentrate on other things. I look forward to whatever it is you’ve got planned.
Many countries have some form of fair use that allows you to make parodies without worrying that much about copyright.
I know that in Sweden at least making porn of things can be seen as making a parody and is therefore not illegal. At least that is how I understood it when I was told about it from someone I know that studies law.
Kefka July 19, 2009 at 7:26 am
Yes, but in most games you’re supposed to be someone else, a character that is already made up by the writers. Like in Resistance 2, you ARE Nathan Hale, instead of playing your own character.
And like you said, JRPG’s aren’t even RPG’s as they should be. Sure, the playing style of different characters is crucial in the game(though not in FF8, since, like Spoony said, the characters are just blank slates), but you are not your own character that can choose his/her path in both characteristics and fighting style.
This is actually why i like Fallout 3 so much, because i am ME, not a persona the designers made up. I can choose wether to be good or evil, wether to use guns, swords or fists etc.
Thanks for one of your most awesome episodes ever! I’m very happy that your life is getting better. The commentary was really helpful and answered a lot of questions I had. You’re extremely talented and on a roll! I feel inspired to finally start my own show, which will be about beating down bad music videos. My problem is that I have a 4 yr. to take care of. This usually means lots of interruptions, and filming only when he’s in school, in a room with poor lighting. I hope you and Linkara are writing a good episode for next time.
J-RPGs are a much better story telling medium because of this, though of course 95-99% of them will have atrocious storylines as surely as a nameless, speechless protagonist crafted in your image cannot possibly drive a good storyline in a western RPG. Both seem to have heavily generic gameplay issues (excessive similarity game to game), but the argument that its surreal being a speechless mute who kicks ass is a bit troubling. Awaiting pointless Planescape: Torment reference.
It would have been really heartbreaking if that had turned out to be a grand finale for the Spoony One. I am sure you know we all have a lot of respect for you and this is all in good fun. Good luck with your move and maybe one day I’ll be able to donate instead of feeling like a scrub.
See you on the other side.
Good commentary. Happy things are going well with the move, and looking forward to much more!
Commentary! YES! I love Spoony’s commentaries and hey, it’s great to hear you’re moving now. You blew up the room, great way to end the season. I can’t wait for the new Spoony Experiment. New reviews with new cameras and mics, that’s just awesome.
So, you bought the Squall costume just for reviews..? That’s what they all say, sonny, that’s what they all say.
Still… I’m still sad because of the this finale… It went too fast. Only 10 episodes.. We wanted more, but it’s still great finale so I don’t know where I’m going with this word rambling.. But I’m glad for YOU that this review ended, haha, I’m glad for your sanity.
About your parents spoony, what do they think about all this internet stuff? Are they proud of you? :D
Love the commentary.
Kudos on moving out of your parents house!
Wow 28, living with your parents and you’re finally moving out. Huge congrats to you, man. Can’t wait to see how things go with your new room is like with your new reviews.
Keep it up man.
Great commentary, it made me realise how much you’re improving in your reviews and becoming more pofessional, in comparrison to your earlyer reviews FF8 was miles ahead.
Keep up the great work! http://www.myspace.com/jukebanduk
awesome job man.I can’t wait to see what’s next
You know, Spoony, you’re going to have to play “Eyes on Me” at your future wedding.
Nice to get some insight into this video from Spoony’s end. When I first watched this review I was a little worried because it DID feel like “The End” to the TSE as a whole, as well as FF8… until the post-credits Linkara bit, which was awesome.
I’m glad you’re continuing though. Although I like the Guy With The Glasses and AVGN and the rest, I do find Spoony to be particularly entertaining for one reason: When those other guys do a video, you can tell they’re playing a character, but when Spoony does a video it feels like it’s more or less his “real life” personality and that’s a lot harder to pull off, IMO.
One last thought: Considering Dr. Insano has been a recurring villain on ATFW, I wonder if we’re about to get another crossover of sorts?
The reincarnated Burton will come forth hehe.
Regarding Raine, since Spoony mentioned he had never seen her in game:
She was in the city with Laguna at the beginning of the second disc. You know, the part of the game where you were playing Boy or Girl? Maybe you would have noticed her if you hadn’t been thinking about the contents of Kiros’s pants?
Seriously though, glad to hear things are looking up for you.
I had a amusing thought though. What if the ‘fragment’ that Linkara found wasn’t really Spoony? What if it was really Squall?
I also think you should do FF9, if only because Zidane reminds me of you.
You ever thought of writing a screenplay if you were a FF charecture and point out the plot holes?
Squal: Can you tell us where the Head master is?
Girl: i think he is hiding in his office…
Spoony/Noah: You mean nobody checked his fu*king office during this entire civil war?!
Irving: calm down there pal…
Spoony: Calm down?! i spend fu*king 10 hours in guantanamo bay for that guy!
The person who suggested Final Fantasy IX should be shot.
It’s my favorite but that’s why I want no review. It’s got great gameplay IMO but Spoony might not enjoy the chocobo hunting you have to do if you want Zidane’s ultimate weapon and some of the better abilities in the game.
………..So please Spoony, for all that is holy do NOT review FF9. I’m sure you’ve played it but I would prefer it remaining sacred. Review something actually bad. Or better yet, do the other projects and don’t pander to final fantasy fanboys. You’re the only reviewer I like to watch for things other than mainstream, so you aren’t disappointing me or any other fanboy of you by not playing anymore FF.
…….Also, glad you finally went out on your own man! As a 17 year old I haven’t got much to worry about yet in that department..but. Yeah.
He can laugh at the plot though.
The gameplay is good, exceptfor the trance mode, and has better controls then 8.
My thoughts exactly… didn’t spoony run away from the blast, surviving it in the process? So how come Linkara found his protoplasm then? Either Spoony is the first person ever in the history of cinema to make a dramatic run away from an explosion and still die in it, or Linkara is about to clone Spoonysquall.
The explosions “catch up” to him in the end, and that is how he died.
Goes to show everyone just how hard Spoony works to make these videos. Don’t say it’s easy, ’cause it’s not if you do it right. It’s a real two way street here. The fans visit the site, keep that ad revenue and donations flowing and Noah works hard to keep the fans happy. Without one you can’t have the other. So kudos to you, Noah, on working so hard to film such an epic ending. May all your trains be suplex’d.
Hearing how close the Experiment came to the edge of the metaphoric precipice was nerve racking.
Gorvar: Laugh about what in the plot? The streamed consciousness? The fact that Zidane has a tail for a reason? Actually moving character’s? A war that destroys all the major cities in the world and it turns out to be that this is happening because a civilization died and wants to fucking merge with the planet in order to continue surviving? Give Final Fantasy IX some fucking credit, it’s got a better plot than 7 and 8 and even 10.
The evil masterminds aren’t killed by a bunch of teenagers who randomly came along, In fact Zidane is supposed to be an angel of death and Eiko and Garnet are the last summoners, they have the ability to kill even the most powerful summon (Alexander) and while Kuja isn’t threatening the minions of the mist like the Terra tree boss and the final boss Necron scared the fuck right out of me. Not to mention Garland pretty much shows Kuja up. Unlike FF7 or 8 it can’t be summed up in MAGICAL SORCERESS WHO WANTS TO DESTROY THE WORLD FOR NO REASON BEATEN BY A BUNCH OF TEENAGERS IN A WEIRD TIME MIND FUCK or TERRORISTS SAVE THE FUCKING WORLD FROM A GIRLY BOY WITH MOMMY PROBLEMS WHO SUMMONS A GIANT METEOR. Seriously, at least all the teenagers an kids in 9 aren’t conveniently there for no reason, they all have a purpose. The only one with a laughable reason for existing in 9 was Quina, but even she becomes useful once you learn lv 5 death and Angel’s snack.
The trance system is actually pretty cool in that it appeals to the emotions of the player at the time (Zidane in the beginning trancing over Garnet, Steiner trancing over Beatrix, Vivi trancing when Black Waltz 3 kills those black mages) it just gets tedious if you play the game enough. Really, 6 and 9 are two of the best Final Fantasy’s and it’s really hard to laugh at the plot when everything is eventually explained. Not to mention the romance actually gets developed and is pretty, and Melodies of Life doesn’t fail nearly as hard as Eyes on Me.
Face it, even if it has a slow start once war hits and Garnet drugs everyone the game becomes pretty mature and talks about death a lot- it’s my favorite Final Fantasy and my favorite game and it’s the only Final Fantasy man enough to bring up death as a consistent plot point other than 6. 7 has a main character DIE and they still just make it about materia and soldier and pretty boys saving the planet and Vincent visiting his angsty love interest. I want Spoony to stick to stuff that is genuinely bad, not a good game with a boring esque side quest system and some flawed overdrive setups.
I think the point he was trying to make in the teen ager problem was that they have no need being teen agers. If the age has no impact on plot or character development, it could very well just be fan service. But I amhave not played IV, so I don’t know the plot, but that is a complaint that I have with some of the gratuitous teen agers in japanese mediums.
I admit the first two disks had a VERY good plot line dont get me wrong, but exactly the entire beating the guy who created the universe went to much.
The scrupted Trans events are awesome and fit the plot, but the ones you get later in the game were at elast in my guys buggy.
I’m not saying FF9 is bad, heck no it’s better then FF8 in many, many ways.
But since Spoony sort of went from 7 to 8 and maybe to 9 i thought he might do 9.
But i agree with you, X and ESPICALLY X-2 suck the root HARD.
As long as you continue to be awesome like you have been, I think your fans will definitely keep coming in and making this site something profitable for you (and it certainly helps to have awesome friends like Mike Michaud and Ed Glaser offering you their support).
It’s actually interesting to hear this commentary in light of reading the history you have in the FAQ section–you never know exactly where you will get taken once you start down a zany, creative path. I am actually quite glad that things turned out for you the way they did and that you DIDN’T become an MST3K clone. I mentioned in another comment that your comedic skills are definitely on par with the best of their stuff, but I think that you have something really unique with your site here that…well, frankly, it just wouldn’t work in another context. I hope that the new room (and “the resurrection”) work out well for you–it is a change, but hopefully it will be an Evil Dead 2 sort of change and not an Army of Darkness sort of change.
Anyway, lots of luck and all that cliched bullshit that gets written in high school yearbooks. Looking forward to the next review!
How can you say you never met Raine in the story? She’s like…the second person you meet on Disc 2 in the Laguna dream. You even have her in one of your videos. <_<
Hey Spoony, you realize that Doomtrain is the very same train that Sabin suplexed, right?
Are we ever going to get to see you actually review the ending of ff8?
If I recall correctly the game implies Laguna is actually Squall’s father. Soooo, yeah.
I was the one who brought up the idea of a FF9 review.
Like you, I love Final Fantasy 9, I think that it is the best game of the series. It was first contact with the series and i played FF9 without really knowing any of the other games and only because a freind recommended it to me.
I, like you, think that FF9 is sacred and should not be ranted on by some stupid critic. But Noah, in my opinion, really knows how to judge on games objectively. Doing a “Let’s play FF9″ would be a good way to comment on the game without too much recording/special fx/cutting work.
Linkara’s a good friend for resurrecting you
Can we expect to see commentaries for the other FFVIII videos?
I loved your FF8 reviews, I really did. FF8 is actually my favorite game ever, as it brings back childhood memories. But unfortunately, I think that this final review was a huge disappointment. I mean, it’s just blatant that it was rushed and it’s inconsistent with the other reviews, and I know that you are aware of that. But, oh well.
I got over the negative comments about John Woo movies, but this is too much! I hope your friend fails to revive you! I’d rather see Rob the robot take over The Spoony Experiment.
I love the commentaries. XD
Always love to hear your commentaries man. Thank you for all the effort you always put into your stuff, it really pays off, your stuff is fucking awesome.
Can’t wait to see you at your new place, I wish you the best of luck with moving.
I understand you are probably beyond caring at this point, but Raine is Squall’s mother. She is the one that Ellone wanted to keep together with Laguna. This also means that Laguna is Squall’s father. The “big love story” here is kind of a combination of love stories because Rinoa is Julia’s daughter and somehow Laguna & Julia’s love is reconciled through Squall and Rinoa getting together.
Even though you don’t remember Raine, she is in your video review where disc 2 is introduced and you have to fight giant caterpillars.
I hope this brought some insight and I just wanted to say that your reviews are fantastic! I will be sure to watch your upcoming work.
About that manga, It’s a Doujin that is fanmade. Japan doesn’t really mind about the copyright seeing how there is this huge convention called Comiket where Fans of anything make mangas, fangames, arrangement CDs, and they sell it in this convention.
In the US, if someone made a fangame that was for money, I’m sure they’d get sued.
“Glad that everything’s been working out for you despite all of the problems you’ve had recently, Spoony. I don’t know what I’d do if TSE shut down.”
Suicide is really the only option. I’ve got my cyanide pill right here!
I just find it funny that Spoony is going to be moving out at about the same time I’m thinking about moving back in, lol…
Oh, hey, have you thought about putting the old camera on eBay in the hopes that some rabid fan will pay top dollar for it as some sort of collectible?
I <3 commentary!
This was a very illiuminating set of events. Glad things are moving forward for you and I hope we get to see more from you as the experiment evolves.
Great Commentary Spoony, it help to let us know what crazy things are going on.
I agree with the guy 2 above me about trying to sell the old camera on eBay, it works for Doug.
We love you Spoony, and will help as much as we can.
So there *is* a move coming up. Good luck with that. I hope things work out with it being just you and your brother.
“17 takenoko July 19, 2009 at 3:43 am
…Recording audio over a video segment is called “dubbing” by the way…”
I think the word(s) Spoony was searching for was ADR or looping. In the context of television or movies, dubbing would be taking a foreign film and creating a new soundtrack in a different language. Example: all the Japanese Godzilla movies are dubbed into English for release in the US. ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement), or looping as it is often called, is a process that is used to recreate dialogue when the on-set recordings are not useable, like if the audio quality is too poor or if the performance wasn’t good enough. Then they will have an ADR session and the actors get into the recording studio and they watch the movie and try to speak their lines in sync with the picture. It is not uncommon for the dialogue tracks in modern Hollywood films to be created entirely via ADR. They still record the actors on set but often there is set noise, mechanical sounds, etc that make it unusable. My whole point in explaining this is to say to takenoko (comment #17) why don’t you try knowing wtf you’re talking about before spouting off some shit in the comments like you’re an expert.
Gracias, my man.
But seriously, no more FF reviews; one game was perfectly fine. I’m saying, polished as it can be, the MGS series is ripe for some snark.
I wouldn’t be surprised if an MGS game is next, he does seem to like referencing MGS2 a lot.
It also makes for some great jokes involving the exclamation point. Well, maybe not great, but that shit always makes me laugh at least.
You need another long series on a super popular game.
I really wanted to hear what you think of the ending, you know, beat the bitch from the future, happy ending, the whole cutscene from the prespective of the camera
Glad to hear that you’ve got living arrangements and web-hosting situated, Spoons. It’s good to see that your contingency plans turned out for the better and that you’re getting a break from the stress. I couldn’t imagine an interweb without ya. Here’s to the future, my friend.
Sentient Cholesterol? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
A glorious close to this epic review, sir. Can’t wait for what’s next.
wow, i thought you were just being a cheapo. lol jk.
Great Commentary Spoony, love these behind the scenes things.
If you ever consider returning to another Final fantasy game, it should really be Final Fantasy X, it’s much shorter and more straight forward than VIII. And it’s the only one I’ve played almost to the end, I liked it, though of course it has problems, so I would prefer him to rip into that one than any of the games that I haven’t played.
@Tomelin July 19, 2009 at 2:58 am
Well if anyone with a camera can be a independent movie maker than any asshole with a keyboard can be a critic amirite?
Wow, and I thought that me being 20 and still living with my parents is embarassing… Anyway, great commentary, great review (all parts, they made me laugh really hard), and just too bad it’s end already. Are you going to do the rant about FF X? I would love to see that. BTW. Is it just me, or is Spoony very similiar to Hugh Grant? LOL.
PS. Sorry for my bad english, I’m from Poland.
I’m actually very curious to see you review FFX, Spoony….even if just as a bullet-point list of what you don’t like about it so much. FF8 was …just as terrible as you make it out to be, and years ago when I first came upon you on youtube, it was a relief to see someone finally call bullshit on it, but…I have to say I didn’t find FFX to be…that bad, and personally, think it’s much better than 8 or 9 (Nine was just….terminally mediocre).
FFX2 on the other hand….I stopped playing about halfway through the intro cinematic and never touched again. Your implication that 10 is….somehow worse than 8 leaves me a bit baffled, but intrigued.
” Although I like the Guy With The Glasses and AVGN and the rest, I do find Spoony to be particularly entertaining for one reason: When those other guys do a video, you can tell they’re playing a character, but when Spoony does a video it feels like it’s more or less his “real life” personality and that’s a lot harder to pull off, IMO.
AVGN’s latest reviews were done as James Rolfe. It seems like he dropped the angry nerd persona.
For the record, Spoony, I always figured those FF8 figurines on your desk were donations. I can tell how much you hate the game and would never purchase those.
… That said, kudos on purchasing the costume. It was absolutely hilarious.
“PS. Sorry for my bad english, I’m from Poland.” stop apologizing, your english is fine and you know it!! you don’t want to be like the germans, do you?
@Omi-san: Since when? He does movie reviews as James Rolfe, but the game stuff he still does as AVGN.
I started watching your stuff about a year back when i accidently came across your final fantasy 8 review searching for the name of a song to add to a project of mine…never stopped watching since. Ive noticed a huge change in you since you started out and im not quite sure if i prefer the old spoony or the new spoony, still love your vids…theres just something about the old way you used to do things and i cant put my finger on it…
hey spoony.. um.. you said in your commentary that you said you felt kind of ill, did you also suffer from any insomnia perhaps? cause i experienced all of what you said except for the headaches, i hadnt slept for over 3 days straight and was starting to get insomniatic physocosis, thats when i panicked and took a sleeping pills… thats really weird dude… and scary, ….. *government conspiracy que*
“eyes on me” asian singing. not super funny, but still funny.
Good luck w/ the new place Spoony. And don’t feel bad, I’ve been in and out of the nest more times than I care to think about and it looks like I’m heading back again.
But I have to ask, Burton’s ok right man, tell us he’s ok =P?
And I only cried during FF7 because I named Aries after my wife and Tifa after an ex that you’d recall from our card table days. “There’s no escape… =P”
Good Job Noah, You made it through the storm. Now you just need to get past the incoming hurricane and earthquake. You always make top quality internet entertainment and so we all thank you for how much Bullshit YOU put YOURSELF through just to keep us, the fans, happy. You are the World Wide Web’s last, best hope of good content.
been watching you for years, from the very begining and im sad to see it end. awesome job and though i love playing this game, i also love to hear you rip it apart! when i saw the ending i did notice the screw up with the whole raine/julia thing as well, and you do encounter raine for quite a bit of time actually, the whole scene when your in winhill fighting “giant caterpillars” the chick in the pub with the little girl (ellone) is raine. the subplot that squall is laguna and her son is only hinted at but it is implied.
Spoony, I can’t tell you how great it is to watch your videos! I love all of your video game commentary, and can’t wait to see what’s next on the roster.
Also, as highly lauded as the Final Fantasy series is -especially since seven, all of the faults are usually overlooked. Thanks for the view on this game -and especially pointing out just how BAT SHIT CRAZY this plot is. I remember how much of a struggle it was to finish at the time, and How I never wanted to pick it up again afterward. This game was a total chore to finish. So thanks again showing us -I laughed out loud with every episode. I can’t blame you for ending this early, after all this really was as thorough as it needed to be. Besides, there was no need to drag it out and make this as pointless and boring as the game itself was to finish. So really, thanks so much. You’ve really made this entertaining, and a BLAST to watch! Keep up the great work, man!!
Glad to hear that your coming back…can’t wait to see your new stuff
You need to advertise yourself more.
I actually found you by accident (I think it was hillarious text review of Dungeons and Dragons movie). And turned out you are one of very (I mean it) very few persons, who has real entertainer talent (maybe TGWTG main guy is eqvivalent). so you need some more advertising or something.
Oh my god, I thought, this FF 8 thing can´t get better after the first audition of Dr. Insano….
But now…”Rinoa and Cifer: The (w)hole story” I nearly laughed until I was crying.
Absolut great…You´re a genius
if you need any more sites with dojinshi (japanese fan comics, usually porn) then try rule34. don’t ask me how i know this
(it was one HELL of a bad dare…but addicting. you can find anything, but your childhood innocence will be utterly destroyed)
Am I the only one having trouble getting the video to load off the website? I’ve even tried using Internet Explorer instead of Safari and it’s still not loading.
I’m watching it now, but I had to select the WMV formatted version because the default FLV one wouldn’t load. Liking it so far.
I can’t remember nine, but XII had to be the worst character personalities (IMO). I’m I the only one that think’s that? What do you think…..
I really love and enjoy your work, including the ones about FF8;but FF8 still remaines one of my favourit game ever(and i really enjoyed Transformers 2 as well),even with all of it`s annoyance.
LOL man that sound effect is like ALL OVER He-Man!
Good luck with the move Noah! Will miss the old room, but hey, when you have to go, you have to go. However there will always be something special about that room. To new beginnings, and a nice placing end to the Final Fantasy Review Series. Yay….
I just played 4 hours of final fantasy x and I would understand if spoony doesnt want to review it because that game is fucking horrible. 100000000000 times worse than 8.
Your fans want more final fantasy spoony!! Bend to their will!!!!!!!
A spinny thing? You mean a “Floatation Ring”! I don’t know why they just didn’t use a Catapult Turtle to fling their Jet Motorcycles and Flying Mechs into it to cause it to collapse on top of Squall & Co. :D
oh god.. NOT YUGIOH HUMOR .. jk that was funny XD
haha, the perfect finale!
you’ve got to do some more final fantasy reviews. or at least some other equally ridiculous rpg series… star ocean perhaps? :P
keep it up, spoony.
hey I like Star Ocean….but I would love to see Spoony get mad at how long it is! DO STAR OCEAN TILL THE END OF TIME SPOONY… it’s fun…but boy will it be long..and you will get frustrated at one of the mandatory minigames.
First off, I love how you break down everything in a sort of cruel yet hilarious way. I’ve always loved criticism like this because I simply hate plot holes and randomness and things that are obviously unrelated and unimportant, or worse, unrelated yet crucial. I’ve always loved beautiful stories and complex plots. I realize alot of “stuff” I see today are horrible, just shit people pull out of their asses. They arn’t even trying anymore. But I noticed that YOU noticed alot more problems in Final Fantasy 8 than I did, and you hated 10. I personally liked 10 so I’m here to ask you to consider doing a video review of 10 to bash it so that I can see what I missed. Another thing I want to ask you is to look at the storylines of Fate/stay night and break that down as well because I found that story beautiful, (except for a few obvious problems… of course… >_>). I’m not demanding you to, I’m simply asking you to consider doing it if you have time. If you have any tips and warnings for someone aiming to be a novelist in the future. Please and thank you! Btw, your work is really funny. xD
I actually think you should do a review of Advent Children, as it would be a fairly small review that would get a lot of views and you already said that you could do a whole review on why it sucks.
Spoony for Advent Children Review!
Very upsetting. Having absorbed all the AVGN shows, I ended up here. FF8 being my favorite, I looked at that review first. It pissed me off. So I looked at spoony’s other reviews to see if they would piss me off too. They didn’t. They seemed reasonable. I like Spoony’s reviews, but he seemed so wrong about FF8. And this proved it. If you didn’t know who Raine was then you didn’t pay attention. She was OBVIOUS (in plain sight if you need a definition).
You really made me feel bad about myself, thank you. I really needed that. I hope you got the attention you wanted.
MST3K had an antagonist that wanted to rule the world. You can repeat that if you want. But if you want to do something original, get a washed up emo like me. I’d like to subject you to the things that you can’t overlook.
I’ve always liked FF8, but it has gotta be the most annoying FF I’ve played, with the spell drawing and ridiculous plot points. You really need to turn your brain off to play this otherwise you end up nitpicking everything.
Although I do like the game and characters, and have even considered it my favourite in the series, I find myself agreeing with everything you say in these videos, and since watching them you’ve become one of my favourite people to follow. Good luck for the future Spoony.
I think Squall’s ok..not awesome…but ok…. Quistis is hawt… here’s FF8 and FFX for me:
FF8 had a decent story but the gameplay ruined it (gunblades are silly but cool in my book and Spoony has a replica one..those are at cheapest 20 bucks) FFX had great gameplay…but god the story and characters…ugh
How appropriate that the last we see of Zell is him choking on wieners!
Spoony, you are a far greater man than me. You sat through this piece of shit game more than once, and I couldn't even finish playing it for the first time, what, 10 years ago? You sir, deserve a medal of valor.
On an somewhat related note, FFIX shits all over this game, but X sucked VIII's teet and was a (very pretty) shit fest as well.
BTW, don't feel bad about crying with FFVI, I cried in Chrono Trigger when they use the time egg to bring Crono back and play that song while him and Marle sit under a tree and she hugs him. Just don't tell anyon……oh fuck.
I cried when Aeris died, chrono trigger, FFVI..let’s see…um…I can;t remember others…but there were others….
cmon final fantasy 8 is a good game it was the 90's lots of games didnt make sense. you could scrutumise every game about these stupid details, you just ignoren them and I have never really noticed them uptill now even though I played this game twice. for what ive seen uptill now there are still no good arguments to hate this game onjly little things like for excample the drill prison, the complexity of the junctioning system which you get used at pretty soon, the magic drawing which you can get by drawin from monsters or the thing you did not mention the draw points (are all over the game !) I had never had aany problems with collecting magic the rarest ofc. were the hardest to collect what is normal …but I admit in the final part you were right in most of the plotholes but like I said you ignore it and enjoy the game and the story .. but I think you are still the only one hating the game so much. I have played many games and not many storylines are as good as this one (despite the minor faults) and really if you get used to the junction system it is really awsome bcs you can really try and find out the best way to set the best build for your guy.but ill finish with no bad words they were really funny reviews which made me laugh many times bu final fantasy 8 will still be the best game I ever played
the junction system was a bad idea. main point of evidence: it was never repeated. if it was truly awesome later Final Fantasy games would have used it…but they didn’t. because it was a bad idea.
I think there aint a single final fantasy sequal that uses a system that was already used in a previous ff game
three words: this game sucks.
Really glad your site got saved. Looking back at all the things that happened and videos you've done this year we would have missed so many things if you had to quit. Fortunately for me, I can basically watch this site and TGWTG and a few other sites instead of actual TV most of the time plus, for some reason the writing is better and it seems more relevant to me out of nostalgia or sense of humor.

Is that a They Live! reference with middle finger ?
I wish I could have seen the video of the crazy Final Fantasy VIII fan singing to Spoony while showing off his memorabilia.
Just watched this video series again since I’ve been going through HCBailey’s LP. I was just reminded of a little fun fact: The song “Eyes on Me” is basically JRPG’s answer to Titanic’s “My Heart Will Go On”. In fact, the vocalist, Faye Wong, was attributed for doing the Cantonese version of that very song back in the Napster days when the “Zelda Song” was listed as being sung by System of a Down. I can’t seem to find much information on who actually sung that version of the song-the most I can find is that it might be someone named Sally Yeh, and I’ve discovered that at least her Wikipedia discography actually lists it so I’m betting that she’s the actual vocalist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Yeh_discography
So let me put it this way: “Eyes On Me” is so much considered to be on par with “My Heart Will Go On” that people actually falsely accredited its vocalist as having sung the Cantonese version of the latter. It kinda makes sense though-they both came out around the same time and they’re both really sappy love songs. Personally I’ll take “Eyes on Me” over “My Heart Will Go On” any day since in my opinion Nobuo Uematsu > James Horner. :p
This review was so funny, it actually made me want to play FF8. I got it recently, and started on it now. I hate the junctioning system, but I don’t think Squall is all that annoying. He just screams stereotypical “loner” teenager. Then again, I’ve only played about three hours.
I actually really, really like FFVIII, and I don’t think the system is complicated. It’s just that it’s completely different from the previous ones, and people just don’t like it when gameplay changes so radically from one game to the other (same happened for FFII). But when you consider the game for what it is, and not as a “sequel” to another one, it’s very good.
The characters are annoying, though. All of them. Which I recognize it’s a turnoff. And while I’m not sure that it’s true things started going downhill with FFVIII, I agree with you that things got really bad with FFX. I mean, a sports game you’re forced to play? I’m playing a goddamn RPG, that should clue you into the fact that I have no interest in sports!
I like the fact that they keep changing the game mechanics from game to game. It keeps things fresh. Well somewhat fresh. Toilet pizza fresh?
The problem with FFXIII is that anything about this game sucks. The characters are just fags, the story is uninteresting and the combat system doesn´t even exist. It´s not challenging because all you have to do is pressing one button at the right time, so that the characters can change their jobs or what it is called in the US-Version (I´m from Germany so I´m only familiar with the german terms). Square Enix is cheating on their fans by pretending that they made a complex game with a deep story-line and complex battle-system. But that is not what FFXIII is like. It´s just an awesome looking interactive movie with no freedom. You are constantly guided through the game. Straight forward passages and nothing to explore.
Many fans say that you have to play to the 12th chapter and than the game becomes really good, but why on earth would I do this, when the first 50 hours of this crap are so borring and uninteresting that I want to kill myself? It´s just bullshit. And now they are doing FFXIII-2 to do things better. And that´s the stupidest thing I have ever heard. A sequel to a game that the most fans hate from the buttom of their hearts should set the things with the fans right again? Sorry but Square Enix is just a bunch of stoned psychos with no sense of what a game should be made of. They should shut down their fucking studio and start to make animated movies because that is the only thing they are really good in.
I’m sorry, are you replying to the wrong person? I’ve never played FFXIII, I haven’t even mentioned it. I’ve only mentioned II, VIII and X.
Also, it’s kind of rude to reply to a comment made a month ago. Just saying.
I know there’s no way in hell anyone’s going to read (let alone respond to) this but for what it’s worth:
You first see Raine in a Laguna flashback. She’s the adoptive mother of Ellone. Yeah, it really sucks that it’s not stated more clearly that she and Laguna are Squall’s parents. And the whole “we were all raised together by the friggin sorceress but we don’t remember any of it” plotline was pretty damn stupid.
Anyhoo, for all the flak Spoony gave to FFVII, X X-2 and XIII he never did talk much about IX or XII. In fact I don’t think he’s ever mentionned IX at all. Does he hate it so much that the mere mention of it would send him into an uncontrollable rage?
He does refer to IX. He hated the art style and was immediately turned off by it even when he tried to play it for more than an hour. He also talked about it at some Q&A when a fan asked about it.
(Watch the beginning of the FFX review)
As Kendo said, he hated the art style of 9 pretty harshly. However he seems to enjoy 12. if you listen to the commentary for the end of the X review he mentions offhandedly that despite the stupid license system he really likes 12. It’d be nice if he did a Ultima style retrospective on 12 before going onto 13.
Yeah I could never finish this game either… though to be fair that was from a fucked up game disc that always froze on the pre-rendered scene just before Sorceress Edea’s big speech where people cheer for her evilness. So I could never get beyond Disc 1 because I could not find another copy of this fucking game anywhere!
Though I have now seen a playthrough of the entire game and actually… to quote JewWario: I like it. Maybe playing it is a bit more tedious but from just watching it I really liked it. Sure it’s stupid but name me a Final Fantasy game that isn’t inherently ridiculous.
is there a video here or something? i cant see anyting. im not blocking any content on this website neither do i experience anything similar with other videos. but i just cant find any “commentary” here except the message board. what am i doing wrong?
I’m not sure if you’ll get this or if you care but to watch the video you have to click on the word “commentary”, and that’s the link. Hope that helped.
I know what your saying a tend to be having an issue with this video along with a the clones of Bruce lee one. and maybe a few more i have not checked yet.
Great commentary! Very illuminating!
As you run from the explosions, you should have been shouting “PHOENIX DOWN!”
…only took me 3 years to think of that pun.
