    Must. Not. Pull. FINGER!

Very nice interview. Got a release date, updates, and a nice look at the expansive territory. Thanks for all the dedication Spoony and Joe.

Well if it gets AngryJoe excited then there must be something decent about Civ5 :) Will give it a go should a demo appear.

  • L1nk1

You guys had very good questions over there :)

  • victuz

I love CIV games but I really hated waging wars in them :/. It was often too random and having extremely experienced units was not useful since 2 “newbie” units of the same type could take it down easly.
I'm really looking forward to Civ 5 since it looks like it will at long last be actual “Strategy game” and not just a “technological race” game.

    lawl George Washington
I'm not an RTS fanatic, nor have i EVER played a CIV game, but i guess i'll check this one out.You guys peaked my interest.

  • Sexual_Tyrannosaurus

Getting angry joe excited is like getting the neighbor dog to crap on your lawn, all you have to do is not build a huge wall

  • Sexual_Tyrannosaurus

    Devs sappin my spies!

I always ignored the Civ games but like Joe i'm going to check it out with 5.

  • billyhardcore

I want to know if the Spoony One checked out the APB booth and what was thought of it, as this was mentioned in the hotel from hell Vlog.

  • Garret02

Damn, one thing I don't like about strategy games (except Total War series before Empire) is fighting and you tell me that Civ5 is emphasised on fighting?
I just love builidng my city/country for hours without having to fight someone.

I will not obey George Washington! I AM A FREE MAN!

More involving fighting would be great since war is an inevitble part of Civ… Personally I'm more of a diplomacy guy :P

Spoony, Your video says Dennis Shirk – Producer, Take-Two Interactive,” but isn't it 2K that's publishing the game, not Take-Two?

    Great Coverage of E3, Spoony!
By the way, you really should consider doing more stuff with Joe. You two have very different aproaches and interests in games, so stuff like reviews done in form of dialogue or argument even (for example, loved your fight over new X-COM)) and two-sided interviews like this one would be very interesting.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clayton-Blanchard/1027514832 Clayton Blanchard

I second the motion of doing dual reviews with Angry Joe. It would be nice to see opposing viewpoints and a discussion between the two of you. Also more BATTLES! :P

Finally, I like what I am hearing about Civ 5!

  • terrorismofthemind

You guys are doing an excellent job…I'm so sick of fucking Gamespot and the rest of the big websites and their shitty coverage and interviews.

You guys have real opinions and excellent questions…i hope to see you guys at more of these.

By the way…I'm really impressed with the quality of the videos…the sound is clear and the camera is steady.

I agree with everyone else…keep working with Joe…there's a lot of good chemistry between you two.

    GREAT work spoony.

“George Washington commands you to pull his finger!”

Nothing like a good joke coming from the Spoony One himself!

Your videos have been, with the possible exception of one website, the best E3 coverage I’ve seen. The reason is that you aren’t trying to claim you are completely objective (a word most gaming fans and gaming critics fail to understand). You are a gamer, you have preferences, and you’re giving your opinion. You’re intelligent fans. Alpha Nerds, if you will (just don’t start mating with all the females).

You’re not pushing the consol war narrative. While you cannot view every game equally, that is actually a plus. Your preferences lead to some games getting the lion’s share of screen time and that works out very well. Best of all, though, you are independent. Most gaming critics will only voice opinions like yours in tucked away podcasts. Nobody can take away an exclusive review from you. Truly, The Spoony Experiment is an anarchist’s playground. Or something.

I like the Spoony/Joe dichotomy, particularly with the Civ V interview. I’ve never seen anyone go up to a reviewer and say “I’m not a fan of your series, convince me.” Such a question is always a hypothetical softball where the reviewer will go “What do you say to people who don’t know that your game is awesome?” And again, you have your tastes and Joe has his. It’s not like you’re the 360 guy and he’s the PS3 guy.

That said, I’m amazed you guys never got thrown out. Is it just me or does Joe have the ability to get people to play along and have fun with him? I got that feeling with the TOR review.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Manofmanycoats Robert Cousineau

You should like it, Since Civ is not a RTS.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Manofmanycoats Robert Cousineau

Well I am stoked. Civ 4 turned me off because for some reason, I could not beat it on normal difficulty. Combat was just so tricky and impossible, with those huge stacks of doom. No matter how forward technologically, my riflemen were no match for bowmen.

I liked how Revolution did it, though it was still kind of broken. But hopefully Civ 5 can finally fix combat.

  • escalator

Another great video. Once again, I haven't played the rest of the Civilization games, but I'm definitely stoked for this. Thanks to Spoony and Joe for the amazing interviews!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Alden/100000469737019 Christopher Alden

Is that Keith David doing the voiceover? I'm such a huge fan of his.

  • http://twitter.com/monotar Hans Henrik Kjølsen

I am SO fucking relieved that they're being good to this franchise… It's probably one of the, if not the, best strategy game series out there. Maybe I'm just saying this because I'm not that into multiplayer games where you get shot fifty times by the same guy because you're a newbie but I'm glad that stacks are gone.

  • Doomzorus

Is it me or the term “Flavor” being a new fad for game designers? Flavor speech? Flavor of thinking? Just asking.

  • QuetzaDrake

Well, I'm a Civ3 whore. I recently got Civ4 finally cause I was kinda wary about learning so many new things to play it compared to my set-in Civ3 ways.

Now it seems kinda of silly in retrospect considering how different Civ5 is. But maybe I'll be better about getting this one sooner and learning it, since it's learning a system much more different than the previous Civs from scratch, rather than replacing all this set-in knowledge for Civ4 I already had from Civ3.

they got some good voice overs for the trailer

    must pull washington's finger

I may have not undestood the Civ 5, but the George bit was hilarious!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joel-Hovington/588573187 Joel Hovington

i nearly choked to death cause of that George Washington bit!

  • Booze Zombie

    George Washington!

Thank fuck for the stacks breathing their last, that always pissed me off when I was trying to get into Civ 4, I'd get this awesome army going, murdering people… and a load of guys would hop out from underneath these other guys I just killed, it was really annoying.

  • Raventail

Now I want a shirt with that phrase and image.

  • DeathsHead419

DAMNIT, they didn't answer the one, one burning question that keeps me up at night: Did they fix the map size? Civ IV felt like such a downgrade after being spoiled by Civ III's giant maps. At least, that's how it seemed to me. I don't care about the hex grid or combat changes or any of that shit. I just want to feel like I'm buiding massive global spanning Empires again.

Sigh, I'm really starting to get a bad feeling in my gut.

  • Voss21

Combat inspired by Panzer General? Awesome. Sounds like a big improvement.

  • Disthron

Did anyone else find that diplomacy was completely useless in any Civilisation game? Single player I'm talking about. It's like every now and again they would demand a bunch of tribute or you would be at war and all it was good for was giving you a little more time to build up forces for the inevitable war.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=794310182 Angelo Buono

Civ is a very complicated game… there are many, many tactics even experienced players don’t know.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Craig-Brennan/100000595177905 Craig Brennan

I guess, if you suck at it.

  • Disthron

*shrugs* That's just my experience, every now and again I try to be diplomatic and it never amounts to much. If you refuse any of there demands, it's war, if you give them what they wont, it's war, I guess I've never tried a strategy guide but it just seems like everyone is hell bent on war.

  • http://www.facebook.com/koztah Koztah V.

I found diplomacy very useful – but only when you have enemies. Early on figure out which civs are going to be a problem for you. Make friends with the civs on their borders. When the problem civs declare war because you won't give them something, you establish a front on the border you share with them and bribe your 'friends' to attack said civ. Then your enemy's resources are spread on 2-3 fronts, you can make progress and take over some cities.

  • http://www.facebook.com/koztah Koztah V.

My problem wasn't stacks of doom, but rather the Infinite Elephant Beam (an unending stream of war elephants) being fired at my fortified cities defended by stacks of tanks…and LOSING to the goddamn elephants.

  • Disthron

Hay, thanks for the advice. I guess I always just dealt with each civ individually. Yours was way more constructive than the other guys response. Also, after all this time I finally went and looked up a guide. I probably should have a long time ago. I guess I don't really consider guides cheating but since I could actually win games, as opposed to being completely stuck, I just never bothered.

Well you've inspired me! I've been an Age Of Empires kinda' guy all my life, but I went out yesterday and bought Civ IV! I'll install later after work and see how it goes.

Never played a civ game. Is it like total war without the battle mode but a more developed overview mode? If so than I may give it a shot.
