E3 2010 Coverage – Day 1

The Spoony One | Jun 18 2010 | more notation(s) |

Spoony goes in the trenches to dig out the bright and shiny E3 gems and sniff out all the hot, steamy turds.

Correction: Apparently Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood is set to be a multiplatform game. I misunderstood the representative I talked to, who said there would be a playable beta version released exclusively on the 360.

Correction of the correction: Okay, no aspect of the fucking game is exclusive to anything. Those responsible for this misinformation have been whacked.

Dammit Spoony! Fallout New Vegas isn't going to be a mission pack! It has double everything than Fallout 3, dialogue, quests, weapons. I don't know who you talked to, but they should have told you everything they have to offer. This isn't some DLC ready to be bought over Xbox LIVE or PSN. Also, you may feel the same un-cleanness as you did playing Fallout 2 because a good number of people who worked on that and Fallout 1 now worked at Obsidian, where Fallout New Vegas is being devoleped.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/45CN63TH4N7LL2T6VZXRCHZHP4 Alvin

How dare you insult Fallout 3. Fallout 3 was the best game that came out in the last 10 years.

New Vegas is going to be better than anything else you saw at E3. Fallout 2 would not sell at all if revamped in this day and age. It is an archaic game that you only complete through massive amounts of trial and error and frustration. Or a FAQ

  • nuclearaptor

    Fuck year,a Weyland-Yutani t-shirt!

    I want one. :3

  • http://twitter.com/Emptysquare Mitchell McIntyre

Fruity shirt aside, great coverage, I'm a tad disappointed in New Vegas, but I loved Fallout 3, so I assume I'll love this. Also, There's a Deadliest Warrior game now? I must play it…

  • kefkaesque

You're pretty good at this whole journalism thing. Maybe get a full time cameraman for your next outing to an event so that you and Joe can split up and cover more ground.

Good to hear about Shogun 2, especially. I'm looking forward to it more than anything else. It sounds incredibly good.

The space marine bit was great.

  • Kvb

Your pessimism is strangely refreshing, Spoony. I'd actually not heard anything bad about this years E3 until now.
I do hope the next videos will contain more stuff you liked, though.

Oh god, the ending was absolutely amazing.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/CYB4EKP6KHSUICPGLQ7OXK6SJY Samuel

fuck my life i cant believe they have fallout new vegas looking like a mission pack in the gameplay footage for fallout3, the customizable weapons and other additions and revamps/new features better make this more than a mod for fallout3.
    spoon man, i am dissapoint…

  • http://www.gamespot.com/users/cornbredx CornBRED-X

Great coverage. I really like it. Cant wait for more, your showing stuff I havent seen from the other sites I go to and of course your great comentary so even if I had.. its still fun.

Haha… I think you made some people mad =P
Regardless of your thoughs on New Vegas, I liked Fall Out 3 and I look forward to the new game. I dont think it will be GOTY material, but as buggy as Fallout 3 was if they even fix that… its improved. I look forward to it.

Oh and… love the epic mickey moment that had nothing to do with epic mickey haha

I'm not going to RAGE at you about New Vegas, but couldn't you use that same logic at Fallout 1 and 2?

I mean the graphics, gameplay, dialog branches and even the setting were nearly identical.

As for all the sweet New Reno stuff you could do, who said none of that stuff would be in New Vegas?

Really, I want to know so I can repeatedly slap them in the face.

As for Brink, the other big hook is to be able to pull off the Parkour stuff, think of it as Mirrors Edge meets Team Fortress.

  • jewbagel

    I see you stylin'

Seems like you got a dud rep for the new Fallout game. They didn't explain anything about the more focused story? It's supposed to be a throw back to the original games since it's being made by some of the remaining Black Isle guys. I'll be really fucking mad if it's just another rehash of the shitfest Fallout 3 was.

Looking forward to all the vids! Especially the coming rage.

  • http://twitter.com/Maulmoviemoos Maul

I'm still excited for Fallout New Vegas, mainly because my expectations since its announcement has been that it will be like a huge mission pack. Because Bethesda isn't actually developing it, Obsidian is, so I didn't expect those guys to re-invent the wheel. I think they are just trying to keep the franchise relevant while Bethesda works behind the scenes on Fallout 4.

I'm thinking of it what Vice City was for GTA 3.

That is about as far as I am in the video. I may leave more comments.

  • QuetzaDrake

I'm pretty excited for Fallout New Vegas, actually, but I have to agree with you watching videos and seeing screenshots of it: just looks like Fallout 3 repackaged. I'm sure I'll enjoy it since I loved Fallout 3 a ton, but yeah, there's home-brewed FO3 mods that did more than they did for New Vegas. On the plus side, it's Fallout New Vegas, not Fallout 4. If this were FO4, I'm sure everybody would be pissed about this, but I think this is just a side game sort of thing, so hopefully it'll be less expensive and also hopefully FO4 will have much more things improved and looking/operating differently.

Fallout 3 is a decent game, but it is oblivion with guns. All the hours I've played it, I was never under the illusion I was playing a fallout game. Just different version of oblivion with a better skill and level up system. However Fallout 3 is also an incredibly buggy game on all it's platforms and I think it's even more unstable than oblivion is.

That being said, it's a shame that New Vegas doesn't appear to offer much new in the way of gameplay that mods for fallout 3 can't already offer. Thanks for confirming my suspicions I've had from the footage I've seen already Spoony. I'll be especially turned off by New Vegas if it's a buggy mess fallout 3 is.

  • loui01

Dude, this video was kick ass!
I'm sad to hear about vegas, cause I live there and was hoping the new fallout was gonna be more then an addon pack and from the way you described it, it really does look that way to me, it's a shame cause we all know they're going to ship it out and charge like 60 something dollars for something that's worth like a 10-20 dollar addon pack.

looked like a pretty disappointing run for the first day, like not so many 'gems' per se, but a lot of the ones that did look interesting, like those music based games ( I wanna learn guitar too!) looks like you're just as excited for the evolution of a learning game for instruments like that.

Shame for Deadliest Warrior, but not suprising. Final Fantasy did indeed look like… nothing. I hope you went back and saw some actual action going on, and if not, then well, I doubt i'd buy it anyway.
Hearing you and Joe talk about Shogun 2 was awesome, it sounds so interesting and I'm just dying to see what its like.

I love the fact you guys are so passionate and opinionated on what makes good games and how much you enjoy them. That's what makes these videos worth watching, and you guys are just all hilarious, look forward to seeing more of this later on, and gonna check out joe's videos too!

Btw, I love that last bit. Pure. Genious. Laughed my ass off.
I Loved the bit at the end

  • Earthbound_X

I'm OK with Fallout New Vegas not being all that different, I loved FO3. SWKOTOR2, and Bioshock 2 were the exact same thing as the first games as well, but I still enjoyed them.

  • http://twitter.com/Maulmoviemoos Maul

Deadliest Warrior looks like shite. I saw the dev ramble on and on about the accuracy of the weapons and data from the show, and damage on the specific areas of the body, and the strategy of a match, yet a match ends in literally seconds. You can't make a strategy in 30 seconds. Just bash the buttons, if a hit or two lands, you won!

They should give the plays a wide open area, to hunt and stalk each other in, deathmatch style but one or one (or squad based if its one of those type of match ups).

Thank God its a 10 dollar DLC game. Because it looks like a 10 dollar game.

  • xKyuudenx

Well, you probably didn't see them doing much on FF XIV because…if they were standing around doing nothing, chances were they're complete idiots. From what I noted from the demo vid they had the combat was….unique?…I dunno, it kinda reminded me a bit of Legend of Dragoon because if you time your attack button pushes or something in tempo you can keep a constant attack going, which makes the combat system (depending on how smooth and responsive it turns out) pretty intriguing. I'd also like to note that I'm not 100% HOW it works, but thats what I gathered.
They actually did keep in some classes that looked kinda neat, and got me curious with going the approach of making classes that are specifically for trading and crafting, which reminded me a bit of Star Wars Galaxies ::shivers in fear::.
Well, I dunno, like with every MMO that comes out I'm clearly not ready to say “yep, gotta play this” , but since I'm such a fan of FFXI still playing it now, and like a lot of aspects of it because its not like 90% of the games out using the World of Warcraft archtype ( especially since as I recall it came first.).
At that same token I do think you dont see MMO's like I would anyways…but I was expecting more than “elfs playing grabass” nice in depth analysis. /facepalm
Anyways, outside of that little disagreement that was a pretty interesting take on day 1 , can't wait to see what else you had to say in the upcoming posts from E3. Good job! :3

  • Cube-heaD

Have to see how Fallout New Vegas turns out to be, but hey, it has hardcore mode and it's made by another team to begin with. Can't get any worse when what Fallout 3 was.
But what I'm really waiting is Civ5 that is coming out in few months, but also Epic Mickey aaaaad Shogun 2!, hehe got chilly feeling through my spine when ever I see the teaser of Shogun 2, curse you to show it again Spoony!

    Jesus shogun 2 sounds nuts

  • procrastinatinggamer

Awesome, Shogun 2 sounds sweet, but I doubt my computer will be able to run it :(. This format of video felt way more informative than the random trailers and gameplay videos you get on sites like GameTrailers. Look forward to the next videos!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Mrsuperduck Michael Conner

Love the Weyland shirt! I NEED IT!

  • Iaro

I'm really excited about the six-string guitar apparatus… thingie (You can really tell I'm not a gamer!); it looks really awesome! Anything that cultivates respect for us musicians is good. I didn't know Spoony was learning guitar, either- you go, man! That is a tough instrument.
That SWAT gag at the end is the BEST! Although I don't recognize what game that character is from. Help?

  • procrastinatinggamer

Oh yeah, speaking of that new guitar game. Being a guitarist/musician myself, I wonder if it would be really easy to pick up and play? Also, since they are going the extra mile to have an *actual* guitar as a controller, would they also put in music notation/tab to read instead of weird color buttons with rhythm on it? (I would prefer music notation myself because it tells you more about what needs to be played, plus it would improve my sight-reading). Another thing that would be cool is if they had some kind of input jack adapter for guitars so you could plug in any guitar (though that may be some sophisticated hardware, I dunno).

  • DJGamer

I don't think New Vegas will be an “Add On Pack” in terms of CONTENT, I think what Spoony may have been trying to say is that it looks like it could've been done as an “epic expansion pack” to Fallout 3, although I've got no idea how they'd implement it that way given the fact that it's an entirely new setting with a new protagonist and storyline and such.

I expect that while it's going to be “more of the same” as Fallout 3, it's going to offer just as much play time as Fallout 3 did, otherwise why take two whole years to develop it and charge people full price to buy it? Hopefully the PC version will also have its own G.E.C.K. or be somehow compatible with the current one (or an updated version of it)-that way even if there isn't much content in the game itself you can still download and or create mods to add more.

That's why I'm thinking I'll be getting the PC version of New Vegas-that and it'll be $10 cheaper. lol

  • yukovalis

But.. I want a new sly cooper game :( That would make my year. Bloody hell… oh well. If you are a fan of it you already have the games, so a repackage is not worth it unless it brings something new to the table. Like challanges and level replays in the 2nd game.

Yeah not that interested in fallout vegas. I see myself getting bored in the long run. I wonder if they are going to get a new star voice actor and have them vanish again?

hmm although I don't see anything I like, I thank you spoony for providing the show. Good job and get some rest man.

  • ShadeFawks

That was a Space Marine from Warhammer 40,000.

Also good coverage Spoony, I am honestly curious about the six string guitar thing and how that will work in a game. Huh… figured they would try to do more for fallout new vegas then slap a new coat of paint and say, “lookie new game $50 kthxbai”

  • http://www.facebook.com/DomonKasshu Allen Arroyo

New Vegas being more of them same isn't a bad thing, I only played FO3 since it was based on the same engine as oblivion and I loved FO3. It's unfair to call it just a addon, its land scape is the same size of the capital wasteland and gameplay will be the same but you have new setting and a new story, plus being developed by the original team might have go back to its original gritty roots. It already has actual prostitutes and a mafia like factions running each casino. also Being set in the west near the setting of the original games might means a future DLC that will allow you to replay those areas in full 3d and maybe update the story lines. But FO4 and TES5 better not pull this shit, The hopefully will revamp those games entirely.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Gilboron Arne Dhollander

Can Bethesda bring out The Elder Scrolls V now please? I think we can all agree that Fallout: New Vegas is not needed (still gonna buy it though, consumerist sheep that I am), and that no-one cares about single player multiplayer. The new Assassin's Creed looks fun though, probably going to buy it as well since I missed the last two.

  • tanukiblue

I think Spoony's harsh judgment of Fallout NV comes from his expectations for it. He's a fan of the series and wants to see great things from it, so he's going to hold it to a higher standard as a result of that. Though if it has a new story, improved mechanics, added features, better writing and can keep you playing for a 100+ hours still, I don't see the problem…

Course he's also a 90's gamer, i.e. a fan of 90's pc games, so he's going to cut the old fallouts more slack. It's what we do when we're fans of something. Spoony's only human.(no offense spoony)

However Brink I really have to say I disagree on. I mean from the GT 8 min video i saw there was a ton of diff't weapons, alot of customization for your weapons and character, and the maneuverability of mirrors edge. Also Joe's added comment.

ps- Return of Rome's bloodline feature sounds great, I missed that in later installments

  • SideWaysThinker

I personally think thats its complete bullshit that Spoony can be prefectly fine with Little Big Planet 2, possibly the most redudent game ever made, but get pissed over New Vegas. He is essentially saying that its the same game play in a diffrent setting. Well, thats what most sequal/spin offs are. Its kind of the point. If you want an entirely diffrent game, then buy from a diffrent series. Also, the first two fallouts were, gameplay wise, identical, and much like he said about new vegas, fallout 2 could have just been a fan made mod of fallout 1 but he doesn't give fallout 2 shit for that.

Spoony really is too much of a cynic when it comes to modern games. You could give him the perfect modern video game, with good gameplay, an exellent story line, good characters, good graphics, all of that, and he would still bitch about it because he is too jaded against them because he is an old PC gamer. He really needs to loosen-up with new console and PC games.

  • Sidstyler

    1. Where did you get that shirt? AWESOME, I must have one!

  • http://twitter.com/nightcobra Leandro Ribeiro

i think it's more like the people that were advertising it failed to mention the many other features of the game, like it's story will be made by the series creators this time, there is a hardcore mode, dialogue system has been revamped for more abilities/lack of dialog options, theres's an addition to karma which is fame, and much more stuff but they didn't mention it

  • huol

Noah is clearly a heretic, he must be purged in the emprahs name.

Little Big Planet 2 will have Racing, Puzzle, Shooting, RPG, RTS, and other genres of gameplay to create levels for.

I would hardly consider that the same as the last one.

  • huol

Spoony is clearly a heretic and will be purged accordingly.

    In the emprahs name.

  • tanukiblue

Yeah that too. From what Spoony said in the hotel video it sounded liked their reps we're pretty bad. Also thanks for listing out the new features, I always miss a few whenever I'm thinking about it.

Even if it ends up being more of the same like he said, I'm still preordering the special edition haha….

  • http://twitter.com/Kyle_Hutslar Kyle Hutslar

New Vegas does seem to have the same combat system, but there's more new things just weapons, location, and missions. It seems the developers forgot to mention a new reputation system, a new ally system (thank god), your allies actually having personalities and personal missions, special attacks for weapons when you use VATS, mini-games like poker and black jack, and a hardcore mode that adds more realism to the game. Not to mention the obvious, new perks, new items, and new creatues. Keep in mind these are just some things they have announced for the game, 4 months before it's release. Overall, I think all of that would be a bit much for a DLC.

  • spect

Well I was going to comment how odd it is to decry New Vegas as nothing more than a mission pack in the same breath as you praise Fallout2 but it seems I've been beaten to the punch. At any rate I'd rather them continue to refine and polish the current Fallout3 engine than go and make a new one for every iteration. If New Vegas is as much less buggy than Fallout 3 as Fallout 3 was to Oblivion than it may well be the least buggy thing ever associated with Obsidian or Bethesda.

What's the current best Total War game? I'd never heard of these games before and searched them up on Steam. There's quite a few to choose from and I'd like to try one but I'm not sure which.

As most people pointed out: the Space Marine moment at the end was amazing. Especially when he shook his head and I realized it was a suit and not a standee.

Also: Fallout 3 is one of my favourite games ever! And if I get a bugfree new “mission pack” with a better story that's enough for me!

  • http://twitter.com/nightcobra Leandro Ribeiro

i'm interested in how the story will be, bethesda may be publishing the game but the ones responsible for creating new vegas are obsidian who were the creators of all this fallout mythology.

  • Leto_Atreides

I can't believe anyone is willing to get fooled AGAIN by Creative Assembly and SEGA.

Sure the graphics in Shogun 2 will be awesome and everybody will need to upgrade their PC to play, but the AI will stink as usual. And instead of fixing it, they will once again start working on a new Total War title. CA has released nearly one Total War game every year since the first Shogun. That's not normal. They should have released 3 perfect games instead of 7 half-baked ones.

Oh, that SWAT joke at the end was just great!

  • http://cynik.co.uk Cynik

I've been too burnt by Empire TW and Napolean TW to buy Shogun 2 on day 1. The trend seems to be rush it out with high graphics but no real content. Though with bringing back speeches and family trees.

The thing people need to remember is that they are gonna try and hype the SHIT out of Shogun 2 since people like me, hardcore fans from the begining of the TW series are REALLY pissed off with CA/SEGA.

So I'm gonna wait till I see the final list of features and peoples responses before buying the game (I haven't even bought Napolean Total War since I've almost completely given up on CA/SEGA as have many old fans).

Though if they can deliver (and here's the most important part) IMPROVE on the old total war series (Rome, Medevial 1 & 2 – loads of great features ommitted from those titles in Empire/Napolean) then i'm all for it.

Also one more thing, the campaign maps on Empire/Napolean are TERRIBLE. They may have bigger theaters but they only have ONE city per country……and if you take the capital of a faction the faction automatically died :/

I hope they bring back more cities and more smaller reigons. Also one of the big things people in the community have been arguing for is 'Family Houses' in family trees. Which means inside a faction, in the family tree, you have sub-factions that are differentiated by name and marriage or great heros in that family etc.

The whole, general speeches, hero classes, unit customisability, general duels all sounds great. Though CA have a habbit of cutting features just before going gold as of late and I wouldn't be suprised if we miss some of them. I hope its not the case and I have a feeling they were working on this as they were working on Empire or even before Empire (as some people suggest).

Also as of late theres been no support for modding for Empire and Napolean so CA/SEGA could sell DLC to us for money-grubbing purposes. Hopefully Shogun 2 will be the expection and we can just forget about the whole Empire/Napolean abortions of the Total War series.

Though I'll wait for the final gold version with a full release of features and reviews to see how bug ridden is.

I'm personally excited for Fallout NV. Thought I have to say AC: Brotherhood hasn't exactly lit my fires. While the multiplayer idea is groovy and all, from what I've heard thus far the core gameplay hasn't jumped all that much. The whole “send people to do your work” thing is nice, but it's been done.

    • Anonymous

      It also isn’t AC 3.

  • Akuosa

I was going to comment about the video, but that ending erased all my previous thoughts with its awesomeness, go figure.

  • Ebonwing

In the name of the Emperor, I order you to move, you are standign in my way!!! Talk abotu epic pownage there, loved the reaction spoony.

  • http://twitter.com/Mosaic80 Matthew Miller

btw: Fallout New Vegas is NOT made by Bethesida. It's made by Obsidian (alpha protocol, Kotor 2, NWN2). So there's your problem right there.

  • JayRam

awesome coverage. the “swat” joke at the end was great.

  • http://twitter.com/redviv Vivi Roth

Yeah, you've been really unfair to New Vegas. But that's really not your fault, those presentation people did a fecking bad job at presenting the game. Nothing about reputation, the game basically being what people modded it to on the PC, balance changes, this stuff. If that wasn't mentioned it really would look like a mission pack.

  • http://twitter.com/redviv Vivi Roth

The problem is that the game is in the hands of some of the people who made Fallout to begin with, and are experienced in improving original games while making them buggier? The very last I'd have to agree with, for the others you deserve the towel.

  • http://twitter.com/Mosaic80 Matthew Miller

Yes, that's the problem. Go watch the Alpha Protocol review done by Angry Joe. That's how I feel about AP and Obsidian in general. They MAY have good ideas for games, I'll give them that. But they don't pull it off very well. The games aren't well tested (if they are, then they don't fix the bugs in them) and they don't follow through with all of the good ideas they have.

  • http://twitter.com/OlivawTweet Olivaw

Yeah, Fallout: New Vegas looks pretty awesome. Mostly because it's more Fallout 3, and I loved playing Fallout 3, and it's being made by some dudes what made Fallout 1 and 2.

Problem is they work for Obsidian, who are bad at actually making stable, playable games. So there will somehow be even more bugs than in the original Fallout 3! But at least the story will be better. That's Obsidian's specialty.

Also, unless I miss my guess, the BIG deal in Brink is that it's supposed to have a “smart” move system where you can parkour the fuck around and do slides and walljumps and shit. I haven't heard much about how well that works, but that's what they're saying anyway.

  • saint23thomas

There's nothing wrong with making mission packs for your existing games, but they keep trying to get us to buy them like they're completely new games. People have been buying expansion packs for game for years, and selling one like it's a new game will just hurt the franchise's, and the company's, reputation. People will get wise to this trick, rather quickly, and stop buying your bait and switch products.

  • http://nfgaming.com Nsane

Eww, Obsidian? Didn't anyone learn their lesson about Obsidian after KOTOR 2? How are they still in business?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Alden/100000469737019 Christopher Alden

Hey, Spoony, did you happen to see Rock Band 3? I think they stole all the thunder from that “rise of the six-string” game you profiled… yes, they also have a six-string guitar controller. And a pro mode to teach you to play it for real. And a keytar!

  • der_ketzer

the video looks awfully pixelated and is choppy as hell. Are you uploading them in HD? (which causes exactely that on my PC)

  • http://twitter.com/redviv Vivi Roth

I know about Alpha Protocol, and its production was a mess. The only Obsidian title that was well managed and had ample time was NWN2, which only failed the performance test. With Bethesda managing them I tend to think it's going to be much better. Heck, even the lead designer of New Vegas admitted that all their failings came from too high goals with too much time or too bad management.
But really, Bioware? Fallout is one of my favourite series ever for a reason, and that is that it's NOT like games Bioware made (mostly until ME). Fallout is well-written, witty and filled with interesting moral choices and, except for the writing, Bioware fails these most of the time. But their morals that never changed from the basic D&D system (there it is, until ME) of good, give-me-money-neutral and rip-your-heart-out evil still pour into Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
But one thing we surely can agree on, Bioware would deliver far superior writing to “[INT] Oh you're saying stuff on the radio?”-Bethesda.

Fallout New Vegas, IS Fallout 3.
With the exception that it will have the story and depth of the previous Fallout 1 and 2 games.

For the most part, the guys from Obsidian are mostly writers and idea men, not game designers. And working around an existing engine with the help of Bethesda will probably make it easier for them.

Granted though, these guys have to work around the modern ESRB system, and political correctness.
So you probably wont find anything like becoming a hooker, trying to figure out who spiked some dudes drugs with poison, shooting kids resulting in a child killer perk, etc. You know, anything that either upsets politicians or soccer moms.

Still, I think that if any of the original Fallout fans have skipped Fallout 3. That they should pick this one up.

I can't be too angry at New Vegas being pretty much the same as 3 either. They never advertised it as a new game, so I didn't expect that. Now if it retails at full price, THEN I'll get annoyed.

But yeah, weapon customization was possible in Fallout 3 with a very well made fan mod. You see this a lot with Bethesda. Fans make these really brilliant mods and they keep showing up in sequels. Only shoddier. Boggles the mind.

    - an involving story
    - better roleplaying

  • thedeviot

Gotta say, I agree with you the Bethesda stuff seems kind of ho-hum based upon the footage you taped. I'm pretty bad at RTS games, but Shogun does sound like it might be worth rolling the dice on. Hopefully it delivers. Deadliest Warrior will most assuredly suck, but after that Vlog about the show not too long ago, I think you could probably do an episode on it, as I'm sure it'll sport a lot of unintentional humor.

  • Uberman5000

    “Yoooou son of a-*shits himself*”

    All KINDS of epic!

  • http://www.youtube.com/deathwing107 deathwing107

I liked Fallout 3 enough that I'll be buying New Vegas, I actually have a personal reason for this as well. Fallout 3 used to continually have bugs and glitches on the PC… mainly because I was buying the DLC, which seemed to screw up the game much more than any mods I had installed as well (actually any mods I was using were fairly small mods, mainly for cosmetic touchups in the game such as character appearances and some weapons and armor). I was also having a problem with the game constantly crashing after I installed Broken Steel. I think it had to do with some of the weapon effects or fire effects it installed. When I installed Windows 7, the music stopped working. So after that I pretty much gave up. I never bought any new DLC after Broken Steel.

I'm hoping that New Vegas will actually work much better on PC than Fallout 3, on my computer. I did really like Fallout 3 despite all of the problems I had with it. Although I think I might wait before I buy it to see how many problems the PC version has first. If it gets similar problems from other people, I may pass on the game altogether. It's a shame, Fallout 3 was a good Post-apocalyptic sandbox type of game.

  • http://www.youtube.com/deathwing107 deathwing107

This is the reason why you get the PC version. Within a year of its release, you're most likely going to get fans who will put this content into the game. And from my experiences with Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 the modding community surrounding Bethesda games is phenomenal (but not without its crap).

Let's just hope Obsidian keeps the modding community in mind while developing this. Bethesda always did, even if they did ruin it with the Fallout 3 DLC.

  • http://www.facebook.com/koztah Koztah V.

Spoony, it's important to remember that Fallout New Vegas is being developed by Obsidian – not Bethsoft. Josh Sawyer is directing with Chris Avellone as senior designer. Both of these people played significant roles in making Fallout 1 and 2 what they were.

The gameplay in Fallout 3 was fine – the flaws in Fallout 3 were the plot, the feel, the writing and the nearly complete lack of Fallout-style dark humour. With Sawyer and Avellone on the job I think we can expect something that might live up to the earlier games in the series.

  • http://twitter.com/Irish_Mankey Mick

Who knew that the Space marines are like SWAT men

  • http://twitter.com/redviv Vivi Roth

Credit where it is due: Both were not involved with the original Fallout at all, Avellone was mainly the guy who responsible for – for some “the screwing up” of – New Reno in Fallout 2. If you want something both were greatly responsible for, Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale II would be that. JES would have been the one to make Fallout 3, though.
Alas, I have to agree with the latter part – writing is absolutely not Bethesda's strength, but *is* what Avellone does best, and JES is a grand designer. With Beths management we might just get what Fallout 3 in their engine *really* can be.

  • Wiseblood79

I wonder if the guy who told you non-VATS kills in New Vegas would be in slow mo is the same guy who told you Assassin Creed Brotherhood is 360 only.

First I'd like to start off as saying Fallout 2 is one of the greatest games EVER!

But at the risk of sounding like a nazi;) I have to disagree that Fallout 2 was “Significantly Different” Than one.

They both had the same 7 Statistics, the same 18 Skills, Both were based off the GURPS system, 2 reused several textures and character models, and even the main goal was nearly identical (find a MacGuffin to save your home town)

The two biggest changes were the reputation system in each town, and more control of the actions and equipment of your teammates. That, and a sweet gambling town…

Gosh, for some reason those changes sound really familiar…

Agreed on the Fallout New Vegas Spoony which is a responding meh to me. What year did Elder Scrolls Oblivion come out? 2006? So they are using an engine which is four years old, now I could understand it for Fallout 3 but, really? I know it's a different developer and all yet it's been while since 3 so they could put a bit more effort in differentiation, it reminds me a bit of Resident Evil 5 to RE4, the mind set oh RE4 got good reviews so lets use the exact same gameplay mechanics and not try anything different but at least 5 had updated graphics and co-op where New Vegas, well doesn't have that…But I will give this game a chance hopefully further trailers will show more that will keep it individual from it's predecessor , but I doubt it.

  • sprode

Well I'm disappointed with your conclusions on Fallout NV. For a Game of the Year candidate in Fallout 3 and a game I really enjoyed, I have high expectations for NV. So hopefully they can make this game stand out more from its predecessor. It's clearly not a full-fledged sequel though not far removed from the base game, so they probably won't. Although I didn't get to finish Fallout 3 due to the game not working right for some reason, so the similarities won't bug me as much.

I wasn't particularly interested in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood because I don't play multiplayer and I hate the thought of the obligatory multiplayer that seems to be infecting our games and I wish they were focusing their attention on a sequel instead of an episode to what was a concluded story… but it looks great. I'm a sucker for the gameplay and the historic content, Italy and the Borgias… even the multiplayer sounds cool even though I'll never get to play it.

That's when you know when a game market is oversaturated, when you see everyone jumping on the bandwagon to that extreme. It's going to be like motion control and Final Fantasy. Dead to me.

Is there really a market for a hair styling game? Really? I don't even care to do my own hair! And I can't believe there's a Deadliest Warrior game… shows they'll make a bad, aimless game about anything. Guaranteed to suck.

  • notyoursavior78

haha the ending was freaking hilarious. Well that was very entertaining. I never played Fallout 3 myself. I just didn't care about it and preferred playing the old Fallouts (1 or 2). Morrowind/Oblivion interested me more too anyway. Would much rather see a Elder Scrolls V than a new Fallout.

  • notyoursavior78

That was good! It could also be the top line on the back of the box too.

  • mcninja

The new Assassin's Creed looks very nice. I got the second one for Christmas last year, and it was excellent, and if they're adding more customization into the mix, then it can't be bad.

Also, the Deadliest Warrior game looked terrible. Who thought that would be a good idea? The show was barely decent, but making a videogame out of it is a stretch.

I think Spoony should train for the next E3. Go for a five mile hike with your 50 lb pack.

  • http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

It's interesting, I've never played an Assassins Creed, though I'll admit the last one peeked my interest. This one looks really nice and sounds a nice complex yet interesting.

Shogun 2 sounds amazing. I know that's a lame comment but I blanked out.

I don't know why I was having any hope for Final Fantasy XIV. While I'll admit to not thinking the franchise should just die like some of my friends feel, they should really just stop for a bit and not try and bust out a game every so many months. Nothing happening is still nothing happening, even if it's pretty and with the Final Fantasy name.

Deadliest Warrior Game? wow… learn how to Min/Max with a knight vs. a ninja. -_-
I'm still more excited for Spoony's Deadliest Character.

What was with the big Mickey Mouse anyway?

  • chewysmokey

hahaha! “In the Emperor's name, stand aside, you are in my way!” I would totally get a t-shirt with a space marine saying that. I hope you have something to say about Warhammer 40k Space Marine.

Anyway, thank god for you, Spoony, nothing better than a straight-forward no-bullshit opinion on New Vegas.

  • MissAshley

I love this combination of professionalism and candidness. Spoony, I think you've got a future in video journalism if choose to pursue it. . .which I know would be tough choice considering all of your other talents. XD

  • englishmuffin

I hated fallout 3 because it was an epic pile of shit but I had high hopes for new vegas. They seem to be showing the same stuff they showed for fallout 3 because it worked so well to sell that game. Even though fallout 3 was crap it got 10/10's fucking everywhere. I'm guessing they are showing the bullshit for the fps console tards that got hooked on the below average combat. Splosions R Kool!!!

I don't know, they say that there are going to be 4 different paths instead of the 1 that fallout 3 had but yeah I'm longing for fallout 1 and 2 type writing and choices. But NV is done by the guys who did 1 and 2 but I'm guessing that dialogue is not a strong selling point for games. I hope you are wrong about this one spoony. Also, bethesda sucks balls. That is all

  • sniktbub

I laughed my ass off at the end. Good thing you don't have that guy in your SWAT team.

  • http://twitter.com/redviv Vivi Roth

Okay, reporting back after having asked a friend who works for an online gaming mag, who's asked their E3 people about New Vegas for me: The people on the booth for Bethesda were really just from Zenimax or Bethesda Studios, none of the actual developers were present because they were too busy giving filmed previews and interviews.
Now that was just a really stupid decision.

I really like Spoony's way of independent coverage, because it is a huge and refreshing change. I have been used to big game magazines or websites, dependant on income from game commercials, being too scared to criticise, or point out ANYTHING remotely negative about an upcoming game. I will be getting FO: NW because it is exactly what I want. FO was my most played game of 2008 AND 2009, and all I seek is a new post-apocalyptic world to explore. All the other improvements, like better writing and less buggy gameplay are just big plusses in my book.
Good thing that Spoony wasn't smitten for being a foul heretic scum and standing in the way of the mighty Adeptus Astartes, visiting game conventions FOR THE EMPEROR!

It's mainly an RPG; not an FPS action game, and as such it shouldn't cater to console tards.
The crap combat should've been a good indication.

People liked Fallout 3 for its characters and scale, it's got a lot of replay value.

  • P4INKiller

Showing ones disapproval of something is a common thing, I don't understand why you're amused by this, let alone why you weren't expecting it.
You could say Spoony was butthurt because something didn't match up to his standards, it goes both ways.

  • P4INKiller

Yeah, the amount of options and customizations it allows you to do is probably the most awesome thing I've seen this E3.
I don't understand how spoony could say “It's the same thing”, perhaps he didn't look into it.

You are actually able to create games of your own in LBP2.
    It's a platform for games.

  • saibot216

    Spoony, I too have a Weyland-Yutani shirt, that's awesome!

  • Akasen

Spoony your criticism on Fallout New Vegas seems harsh. This isn't suppose to be the game the revolutionizes how an RPG is played. It's just a way for the fans of Fallout and Fallout 2 to reconnect with the Black Isle Studio's (Obsidian Entertainment) and to give a better roleplaying experience than that found in Fallout 3.

  • Vinny1138

That ending Easter egg, was F*cking hilarious and Awesome. That costume was cool as hell.

  • englishmuffin

If they are going to make a first person rpg they need a good combat system. Why make it and first person instead of top down or third person if you are just going to have a halfassed combat system?

Excuse me? People liked fallout 3 for the characters??? The characters are as memorable as the fucking star wars prequel characters. Sure it has scale. It is a massive world that you can wander around in. That's it. Replay value my ass. Unless you didn't wander around the entire map that is the only reason to play it again cause you sure as fuck are not playing it again for the storyline.

I've only made it through the first two games in this video (Fallout: New Vegas and Brink) to see that Spoony, seemingly, is reviewing these games before they're even released based on what they look like. Nobody truly knows what these games may be like in the future in terms of content. After all your only getting a small taste of what's to come. I understand these are his opinions, and it's his own right to have them, but please be fair. And wait 'till they're released before bashing on them.

As a drummer, drumming over sensors sounds like a bad idea. It's actually really hard to drum with nothing under you for an extended period of time, more than maybe 30 minutes, depending on the weight of your sticks. On a pad or something with some rebound, it's totally fine and easy to do for a very long time. If you're just drumming on air though, most people can only do it for about thirty minutes, an hour on a good day.

Outside of the rather “speculative” pricing on the upcoming Rock Band 3 gear (seriously RIP Guitar Hero. Talk about being beaten to the punch.)I am amped for the new peripherals. I am truly a low level novice on the electric guitar, and being a gamer up until now has not helped in the least!

Spoony I think you may have been too harsh on Bethesda, seeing as how Obsidian is developing New Vegas, with them publishing. Outside of the minimal updates to the graphics I saw those particular complaints more as positives. I would rather the aspects be similar to FO3 more than being screwed up. Strangely enough New Vegas still looks light years better than any of the PS3 exclusives shown thus far in my opinion. I may have to change my preference of buying Multi-Plat games for 360 to my PS3 just to give my 360 a break during this upcoming holiday season.

Nice work Spoony I was happy to see that you refrained from spending loads of time on the motion controls which is becoming tiresome. I keep reading all this flaming from Sony fanboys about how the Move is gold while Kinect is shit. However, when I go and watch the real time game demos Move looks less responsive than poking a dead hobo with a stick. Kinect wasn't given a great entrance, but doing a bit of research makes it apparent that we haven't even seen a small portion of it's abilities.

  • unknowncast

New Vegas: Well, it isn't Fallout 4 so…you are expecting the same core, right?

Brink: Splash Damage is a FPS developer so…?

Brotherhood: It isn't that hard of just calling it a spin-off or an expansion pack.

I love you man but you really need to also mention the developers but apparently you're not a fan of any of them to bother mentioning them to begin with.

  • unknowncast

Is Spoony aware of that? He never once mention the actual developers.

Though, the description he had about Fallout 2 seemed like they would fit with the New Vegas world very well.

  • unknowncast

It's understandable when you making multiple games though apparently this didn't turn out well in Alpha Protocol's case.

  • Akasen

At this point I am assuming that most people are unaware of the new developer and the developers history with the original Fallouts. The way he spoke though made me believe he was unaware of who was developing the game, always mentions Bethesda and not Obsidian.

And yeah his description of Fallout 2 does fit New Vegas well.

  • Ruiner

Did I like fallout 3? No, I FUCKING LOVED IT! Hands down my favorite game of the current gen, and definitely in my top 5 of all time! You obviously already made up your mind so I'm not going to waste the time going into detail but the DLC had a big part of it. Let's just say I was born in Pittsburgh (The Pitt), spent a major chunk of the best part of my teenage years in Maryland(Point Lookout), and being 45 mins out of DC found me visiting there bi-weekly. So seeing post apocalyptic versions of places that had heavy personal significance to me created a lot of emotional impact. Plus I absolutely (just like with Fable 2) loved having a dog sidekick.

  • englishmuffin

That's my point though. It's an exploration simulator. That's all. Beyond wandering around and looking at cool stuff there is nothing there. There is no depth to the game. Don't get me wrong, the world is amazing and I enjoyed exploring the world the first time I played through it but It is a terrible rpg. A good sandbox game for those who enjoy exploring and killing stuff but a terrible rpg.

Actually I checked an interview with Josh Sawyer a little while ago.
And he mentioned that while karma would still exist in New Vegas, but it would not effect individual opinions of the player.
That was one of the main things that really killed the realism in the last game for me. So yeah, glad to see that fixed.

He also said rangers would come for you in your sleep… Sweet.

Actually the multiplayer beta for Assassin's Creed Brotherhood will be exclusive to PS3.

  • Destoroyaaaaaaaaah

I wont lie,FO3 was the first Fallout I played, and I loved it to death,so I dont know what the real Fallout experience is,but I am glad theyre staying in familiar grounds with the game, besides, what would you expect if they didnt slap 4 on there,it was basically going to be a full game DLC from the start, anyway,my only gripe with Fallout 3,was the weapons, its not that I think they suck, but there werent enough for me first, and second, there werent very many recognizable weapons form the 60's,which is what the games plotline is based on I assume, but they were enjoyable non the less,Im just happy I get to use the M16 (or was it an AR-15?) and 1911 weapons,as well as be able to customize them to an extent.

If you're such a big fan of Fallout 2 I don't get why you're so upset about New Vegas having similar (alright fine “identical”) gameplay to FO3. FO2's gameplay was identical to the original fallout's but was still excellent because of the change in setting and atmosphere as well as the expanded use of humor. We know for a fact that New Vegas changed the atmosphere and the setting, so how is this any less different from FO3 than FO2 was from FO1?

Why are you jumping all over Bethesda for Fallout New Vegas? They are not developing it.

That was fascinating and educational, I look forward to Shogun 2 even though I'm terrible at the Total war series.

If it was a terrible RPG then why did it get 10/10 and some awards… -.- Also you sound like you have more anger than the Angry Video Game Nerd. Lighten up pal

Oh that's easy. Gaming journalism is a fucking joke. Sure there a few good reviewers out there. Joe and spoony being two of them but there is no way you can believe this game deserved a 10/10 score. If you are generous you can give it an 8 out of 10 but never a 10/10 score. It's like when oblivion came out, it got perfect 10/10 scores until a year later when everyone realized it too was about a 8/10 game. Maybe bethesda gives the “journalists” some money under the table but for the bugs, terrible main story, lies about the endings, mediocre combat, horrible voice acting, and a bunch of other stuff, no way in hell can any respectable person give the game a 10/10 score.

I am so fucking getting the Sly Collection. I loved that series.

Also, Brink is essentially Unreal Tournament III, but… no wait, it's UT3. There's really no difference.

Character customization? Parkour? Character classes? Ring any bells?

I gotta say that Spoony’s impressions are a little off on Brink and I’m sure it’s gonna be amazing

dropped the ball on this one
suprised you didn’t give a quick review after laying the game

    in the most important way

blew my skirt up :) amusing phrasing
that end bit w/the robot telling you you’re in his way, very amusing ‘oh fuck you…oh shit you’re huge…RUN AWAY!!’
I’m actually not into contemporary gaming (mostly due to vision issues that conflict w/the camera angles used for most games) but i still really enjoy hearing you, joe, jew wario & others on the site review games, even if they’re for consoles i’ll never own and/or games i’ll never play, you’re funny enough that you make it interesting.

Oh my god how wrong you were about fallout: new vegas. Completely different game in almost every aspect besides graphics. New story line, new character, new guns, new setting. I love that game… :(

    • bambacha konga

Smaller area, no gameplay additions to FO3, end of game means END, no free-play like in FO3. I can’t blame Bethesda for this rushed, washed up “game” (more like stand-alone expansion)  since Obsidian Entertainment made this. And when you hear OE you should run far away. (ruined games like NWN2, alpha protocol, DS3)

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000196483038 Sebastian Svanekjær Pedersen

Remember that they only had 13 months to make it. Most games get 2-4 years. AND they actually planned to add a post-game sequence, AND more legion territory. Also there wasn’t any post game in fallout 3, it was added in broken steel. So you CAN blame Bethesda for rushing it.

        • Norrikan

I can only speak for myself, but I enjoyed FO:NV more than I enjoyed FO3, which already was a fantastic game. I just liked the feel of that game more.
Also, I don’t get the hate for Obsidian. Kotor 2 was leagues better than the first one and Alpha Protocol was awesome. Never played NWN 2 or DS3, though.
