E3 2010 Coverage – Day 3

The Spoony One | Jun 21 2010 | more notation(s) |

Man, something really put those Jedi Knights on edge today…

Correction: Agh, you’re right! Homefront involves North Korean forces, not Vietnamese. My apologies, I even knew that but I got some mental wires crossed when I recorded the voice-over. Good catch, everyone!

• http://twitter.com/evan_kummer Evan Kummer

Yay First!

• Ebonwing

ROTFL!!! I can't believe you had 2 SWAT4 references there, and I love the Jedi one, though your reaction the the emperial space marine was like uber epic.

• Anonymous

Imperial, it is not the Empire of man, it is the Imperium of man.

-Spoony

I just wanted to say that today I became a big fan of yours. Originally I really only went to thatguywiththeglasses for nostalgia critic, but now I like you way better than him. I find him mostly to be hit or miss where as your stuff is consistently funny, I love your final fantasy X bashing. You gonna watch Deadliest Warrior tomorrow? They're doing KGB vs CIA circa Cold War which will be neat. Anyways i just wanted to say I am now officially a Spoony fan and look forward to seeing more of your videos and possibly meeting you at a convention sometime.

Your Fan,
Evan

• kefkaesque

You had an interview with Dr. Greg?

That's pretty awesome.

• englishmuffin

That armor looks like something out of the fallout universe. You would think a jedi would wear something lightweight that would not restrict his movements. I'm not familiar with the games and books but is that common among jedi's?

• Demon_Ninja

Ummmm Spoony you kinda slipped up on your info about Homefront. Those were North Korean troops, not Vietnamese.

• gold_magistrate

Homefront is about North Koreans though

• http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1271695246 Michael-Wife Robbins

Amazing as usual Spoony.

I gave up on MMOs but your review has convinced me to get the Star Wars the old republic for sure.

• http://twitter.com/evan_kummer Evan Kummer

I know like even when the Clone Wars Jedi's never wore battle attire. Although it did look cool

• http://www.facebook.com/people/William-Jeffery/100000381348195 William Jeffery

It's very comforting to hear someone with your high standards say they are blown away by Star Wars TOR. I really hope this game succeeds, not because I have any ill-will towards WoW, but because I believe the MMO genre is stagnant, and that WoW's near-monopoly is suppressing innovation.

• Iaro

Lol, Spoony got SWAT-owned by the Jedi… XD

The thing to understand about Sonic 4 going “backwards” is that that's what the fans want.

The company is ignoring every single sonic release after Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Why is it episodic? No idea.

But I do know that Sonic 4 is basically every Sonic fan's dream. Going back to the roots of the “good” of the game.

I for one am looking forward to Sonic 4. I will say that every Sonic (well except Sonic CD) after 3 sucks ass.

• dennett316

They may have wanted it to go backwards in terms of style, but I don’t think they wanted a remake, they want all new levels using the 2-D style. I’m even disappointed they’ve used polygons instead of hand drawn sprites…think of how gorgeous it could have looked if they’d have given us a touch of the Metal Slug style, instead it’s lifeless polygons. Ugh…Sonic 4 excitement has gone.

• http://www.succubusvalley.com Succubus Queen

Yeah. I agree with you there. A friend of mine is still looking forward to the game, though. But from what I understand, it’s a small project, so they didn’t really put much effort into Sonic 4.

• http://www.facebook.com/lars.flyger Lars Flyger

Um,, they delayed the game so they could put MORE effort into it. It’s not like Sonic 4 is a small effort, it’s a relatively major project.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Ciccaroni/72002282 Andrew Ciccaroni

Have to agree, I am glad that everyone seemed to like TOR. I want a new MMO to come out that will be able to inject life into the basic grind, then raid methods of MMOs right now. The story and cinematics seem to be able to do that with TOR. And I will openly admit, WoW has become about as boring as possible imo and needs to be at least given a shake up with something challenging it, Cataclysm looks like it will be just as stale as everything else in WoW has been.

I am also very excitedly awaiting the great amount of videos on TOR that AngryJoe said will be coming from the two of you on the TOR forums.

• http://twitter.com/LucasChad Lucas Allen

To be honest, I played so much Sonic 1 and 2 as a kid that I don't mind seeing it updated on a Next-Gen console just like New Super Mario Bros. Wii! It's just me!

• kefkaesque

Well, it IS an MMO. They need to have loot.

Also, KotOR had swords that block lightsabers, so it's not a big stretch.

• kain6th

Damn I was hoping you would check out the new Twisted Metal on the Ps3. I've been waiting for a new one for a long time. Also prepare to recieve a lot of flak for your Sonic 4 rant. I would have to agree though, it's like they totally just said “well we just can't make a good 3D sonic game, so let's just go back to 2D like the old days.” Oh well. I guess it's either that or just let the franchise retire which we all know won't happen as long as sooo many fans demand them.

• http://twitter.com/Cubemario Peter Lucky

Excellent coverage, really great dedication Spoony. Look forward to the thoughts at the house, no doubt we'll get the real meat there. It was also nice to hear about some games I've never heard of before. As far as sonic goes, I never liked it, ever. I even own the mega collection on gamecube, thought that the 2D sonics would be as great as everyone says.

I really want to like sonic, I really do, but I can't bring myself to have any fun with the games, old or new. Especially new.

• Caelan

Great Vid! It's more interesting when you two have diverging options on things. Was hoping you'd have more behind the scenes hotel cometary.

Scoundrel Smuggler all the way! ;)

• JSConrady

Some great work, guys. You two made a fantastic team and glad you covered so much. Too bad I didn't run into you there (ran into JewWario though, great guy too) and especially happy to hear some Old Republic impressions seeing as how I kind of overlooked it. VanQuish was certainly a surprise too, I though. It looked really sharp and in an E3 with few new titles and a lot of sequels, I was just happy to see something a little fresh.

Hope to see some more Vlogs with more reflection on E3, Spoony. Your take on things is always great.

• http://www.facebook.com/Novak83 Ed Novak

Want…to play…The Old Republic…SO MUCH.

And dude, all the SWAT 4 jokes were awesome. Loved the Space Marine from Day 1, and the Jedi Knights and Chinese(?) soldiers. Was there seriously someone inside the Space Marine suit, though? Looked like an animatronic.

• bravetoaster

Dear Spoony,

Please review all games/game-related things from now until forever. Seriously. Your reviews and analysis of games (especially the element of wanting something interesting/new) is wonderful and rare.

• Vanlan

Anyone here a member on SWTOR? Friend me :D

• jewbagel

You and Joe need to cover E3 every year man. I haven't seen genuine coverage from real gamers like this probably ever. It's so refreshing, especially to see it from different view points (pessimistic old curmudgeon PC gamer Spoony vs positive still has hope Joe). Hope to see a couple more vids, or maybe an after the experience vlog? That would be cool. Keep up the great work.

Also The Old Republic will be the first MMO I'll play. Looks fantastic.

• LotusPrince

I was very pleased with this series of commentary. Your and Angry Joe's genuine enthusiasm is very refreshing. It gets really old to see scripted BS on TV, where it's plainly obvious that the “gamers” have less than no idea of what they're talking about.

Also, I have to say that Sonic 4 is more embarrassing than I thought. I thought it looked like an old Sonic game, only slower (way to go, Sega), but to have literally remade a 20-year-old game and to make gamers pay for it in installments is a freaking crime.

• AlarStormbringer

Ooooh, damn you Spoony. Your coverage of Star Wars: The Old Republic and you even -mentioning- WarHammer online has got me thinking I'll be playing three MMOs by next year. That is unacceptable!

Absolutely fantastic coverage. I found it all highly amusing and informative.

Just a side note, did you recently receive a Penny Arcade book? Just curious if that shipped fine.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Blayney/683346875 Michael Blayney

I can't for the life of me fathom the point of an MMORPG that plays like a single-player game. Just make it a fucking single player game! I HATE playing games with other people; the entire reason I bought a console was to spend time AWAY from society, goddammit! I'm just going to say it right now, fuck The Old Republic.

• Anonymous

I do hope that was a joke of sorts.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Blayney/683346875 Michael Blayney

Not even a little bit.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Laharl-Krichevskoy/100000817475468 Laharl Krichevskoy

I start off with Old Republic. Bioware has been remaking Balder's Gate with a new gimmick, and this one seems no different. The thing missing from MMO's isn't branching story and cover fire. Star Wars has already failed to win the MMO market once, I don't think this will be any different.

I agree with…

Natal Sucks, 3DS remakes are lame (Even though Kid Icarus:Uprising looked great), Pirates looks lame, Vanquish looks cool (Nice Leary reference) And Sonic is lame.

• http://www.facebook.com/Manofmanycoats Robert Cousineau

Yeah, I saw the trailer for that. I seriously think I am going to buy a PS3 just to play that from how sexyawesome it looks.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Blayney/683346875 Michael Blayney

And while I'm angry, FUCK motion control for videogames. It doesn't work most of the time, and even when it does, what's the fucking point? Waggling your arms like a retard doesn't immerse you in the experience, it makes you look like one of those kids from late-80s/early-90s videogame ads that got WAY too fucking into Zelda. Fuck stupid gimmicks. Motion control is to videogaming what 3-D is to cinema; it's a way to divert attention from the fact that the product it's attached to FUCKING BLOWS. I'm looking at you, Avatar.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Sindre-B-Skaras/100001243630444 Sindre B. Skarås

Oh yeah, and while I don’t agree with the opinion on the motion control franchise, I must say that my brother and I saw a non-3D clip on TV from Avatar after seeing it in 3D on cinema and went all: “Hey, this movie sucked.”

I was, though hoping for a look on LEGO Universe. I dunno what pulls me into that MMO. I really enjoyed the producer’s comments and footage from GameTrailers with the whole “imagination” build, but eventually I’ll have to choose between that, SWTOR or just staying with WoW.
I can’t play more than one MMO at a time!
Anyway, in the spot I am right now, SWTOR seems to win my attention (if everything goes as promised, that is).

So we’ll see how things work out in the future.

• http://twitter.com/RocMegamanX RocMegamanX

The Wii’s motion controls do work. I have one. Would you rather have a gimmick that DIDN’T work, like the Virtual Boy or the Power Glove again? What about that Octagon thing that the Genesis used to have?

People, however, have been saying that Kinect was the low point of E3, and I might agree. Heck, if there’s no accompanying controller, then what’s the point?

• http://www.facebook.com/Manofmanycoats Robert Cousineau

Not particularly common actually. Its something more or less to do with the pre-movie universe.

• http://www.facebook.com/Kannebas Izzy Rankin

Now, if you really want to impress Kannebas, instead Nintendo, of taking an old game and lazily remastering it; Kannebas says take your entire thirty-three pound head, turn it backwards, like The Exorcist, have it roll down your back, catch it with both your hands… and then Nintendo, Kannebas says take your own head and proceed to shove it directly up YOUR CANDY ASS!

Spoony… nice shirt.

• batlashes

When the camera was in low light conditions or moving around a lot the video went into soupy squares and Spoony's eyes went bright green. Trippy!

• http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1536912113 Ian Kovich

I'm holding out hope that the 3DS remakes will take a note from Resident Evil Remake on the GameCube and feel free to add as much new content as they wish (they already mentioned redesigning the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time, so there's a glimmer of hope). Until then, I'll hope that Resident Evil Revelations won't be as disappointing as 5 and that I still like Kingdom Hearts when it hits. Kid Icarus looks like the go-to title for now.

• kikyoo

'ey spoony I'd just like to point out that a full voiced MMO is going to be SO GOD DAMN SLOW to sit threw I mean holy crist, ya know what the first thing everyone who plays World of warcraft learns to do? Instant text Boxes so they don't have to sit there and wait for the text to type out. It is going to piss people the fuck off having to listen to that crap whenever they go into instances and do every single mission. Hell In Dragon Age I wouldn't have beaten it if it wasn't for the skip buttons! It is going to bog the action down SO much! and the only thing worse than too much talking, it too much talking in alien languages! I hope they never force people to go to the wookie home world, because it will DRIVE People insane! Good lord just thinking about it is enough to kill my excitement for the game!

Besides that, I like the cover system, and think it will be a lot of fun, espicaly since there is no slated healer class, and the sith side can't have a healer anyways, and I really like that. It makes me VERY excited, and if the leveling is paced right this could be a really fun game. But I have not heard enough to really sell me on the experience.

As for a lot of the strategy games you said are good I “might” check one out, but there are just too many for someone like me. I'm already sold on Starcraft 2. You simply will not be able to beat the longevity of the user made content connected with Blizzard's RTS. It's really diffcult to get me excited for any other RTS because of it.

Other than that, Good job Spoony, For me the highlight of your E3 vids was Hotel Hell, and Your screaming over X-com. The elevator was hilarious! Even tho you suffered for it, It was still very funny. I see you finally managed to shave! Looking forward to the deadliest character. Your totally going to have to do Wakka vs Squall!

• http://www.facebook.com/SwobyJ Malcolm Swoboda

I am totally fine with it. I love Mass Effect, KotOR, Jade Empire, and while I have WoW, I don’t really play WoW hardcore (GM of a social levelling guild here lol). I think I’ll love it, and the way they seem to have it set up, there shouldn’t be a huge issue with impatience (just bring along 1-3 other close friends for many missions, and bear with it for the larger world missions).

If I get Old Republic, I’ll probably be Jedi Consular. Sith don’t appeal to me, Jedi Knight is too physical (I prefer powers that interact more directly with the Force). Smugglers and Agents look like the ‘Engineer’ class of other games…which I never play. I might play those if the perks are really interesting (like teleportation is for mages in WoW). Troopers and Bounty Hunters are great for shooter and Boba Fett fans, but not for me.

So I hope Consular is fun :)

• Anonymous

I’m not saying there isn’t a market for it, and Yeah there are plenty of ways to bypass it, if they think ahead, but I guess my point is, Fully voiced storyline will only get things so far. A lot of WoW players who are going to try KoToR, are not going to stay if the combat is not dynamic and interesting. I know that WoW does not have very good encounters for the most part, but wow’s player base has come to expect interesting Combat, and KoToR seems much more focused on story, than Combat, and I think that might work against them.

Also another thing, the class change they have up on their website pretty much feels like a step back. They have skill trees, fine, but then they only give you one, based on your class, and give you one advanced class to pick from? That’s really a step back from WoW that gives you 3. I know they are trying something different, but less choices out of the gate, does not make the game better. It only makes content more gated, and turn off a lot of potential players.

A lot of people are going to try it, and I’m certain it will have some very strong points in it’s favor, but the general concept has not won me over. They need skip able quest talking, they need Dynamic combat. Taking cover is a good step in a positive direction, but they need more than just that. This is a strong contender, but this is 4 classes (light and dark side are basically the same thing, i don’t care what you say about force lighting this, and force push that.) with 3 talent trees, obviously linear instance based questing, something that has NOT done well in other MMOs, and an emphasis on story, when a lot of people really are more concerned with character development, not story development. Most people I know who play WoW, turn off ALL the in game sounds, and like to listen to their own music. Fully voiced un-skip able quests are going to make that a pain in the ass, and I think is going to end up being a mark against it.

For the record I’d like to see this game do well, Honestly it has a lot of potential to be really fun, but from what I’ve seen it’s not sold me on it. Combat looks very dull and boring, the interface sounds like it needs some work, and really all in all I just need more information before I can say “This is something I want to play”.

• CPBacon

Hearing Angry Joe argue and scoff from behind the camera is great, it's funny and adds an extra dimension to the observations.

• lkraider

Wow, Spoony + Angry Joe == Win

To me, this series was a success, great coverage of the stuff that matters at E3. Thank you Spoony :)

• rudy023

Excuse me, you're commenting in my spot, sir!

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Seth-Klein/15605393 Seth Klein

Thank you for voicing the gameplay purist point of view. People like gameplay over themes, people that play and enjoy board games understand this intuitively.

Good sequels add depth and perfect the gameplay in the originals, since there is no perfect game each sequel is the developer's chance to add more elements and refine things. Deus Ex 3 sounds good because they want to keep the core elements, along with the other titles Spoony likes.

Sequels that take the gameplay from other series are betrayals because they aren't refining, they are abandoning the gameplay and rethemeing the game which reduces the chances of such gameplay being used again.

It burns me when people (like what Joe did) assume there are design deadends. Full voice acting isn't good for a heavy dialogue, choices and consequences game because it costs too much to voice a mountain of dialogue with variations. You end up saying that such old gameplay is a deadend despite the tons of great games that could come from it, you wouldn't get Civ games advancing if they went to a real-time Starcraft clone in Civ 2.

This is why Spoony feels disappointed, there is still gameplay he loves that is abandoned but that still has life.

• http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ZZQEDJ4ASWB7JPZ3DPRHCVDHUY Nathan

Wow, I have NEVER disagreed with you Spoony more than right now. I truly think Sonic 4 looks great. I have no idea why it's episodic either but the fact that they keep at least TRYING to do something different is refreshing. Sure it's going back to it's 2D roots but I think that's a good thing, they just can't seem to get a good 3D sonic game right(tho the Sonic Adventure games weren't THAT bad, could be worse) anyway, why NOT try going back to it's roots? Sure, it's the same game as the old Genesis ones but that's what most Sonic fans want, and those that don't just can't seem to pinpoint what the hell they really want in a Sonic game. They just seem to keep bitching at the problems the 3D games have then as soon as Sega tries going backwards to Sonic's origins they complain and whine about it being exactly the same as the first three games, they just don't seem like they will ever be satisfied. And frankly that's what I got out of your rant there. Well, that's my 2 Cents.

• http://www.gamespot.com/users/cornbredx CornBRED-X

really liked your coverage of E3. Hope we can get this kind of coverage every year. I really like to hear your actual opinoin on stuff because when you talk about stuff even if its something I have the opposite opinoin on I know its authenticate and not just politically correct and whatnot.

That being said, I may end up agreeing with you on Sonic 4. That will be disappointing if it comes out and is only an updated graphically version of the original. If they cant make a new, modern day, innovative sonic game- they should really stop making sonic games.

I'm jazzed about SWTOR as well. I may start playing MMOs again when that comes out (I kind of feel at this point I definitely will) and I hope it can rival WoW. WoW needs the competition and there needs to be other worth while MMOs to play. I'm mainly sick of WoW cus I got hacked twice, so I'm over WoW now.

I dont know that I agree with you on the pirates of the carribean game, it looks kinda interesting, but as far as Tron Evolution…. Ya that looks awful. I heard them briefly mention it on Giant Bomb's coverage and I couldnt believe it. Then you showed it.

It's NOT TRON! It's a prince of persia rip off. Really? They cant think of anything new to bring to one of the greatest game/movie franchises (admittedly if your a fan, so its debatable) ever? They cant make up their own game style and mechanics? They have to rip off Prince of Persia! It doesnt even fit the setting! I could rant on and on about this, but I wont. It looks awful. I know alot of people didnt like Tron 2.0 (I did- not story so much but i liked the gameplay ideas) but to me it felt more creative then … that. Bleh, that games a wash.

Alot of good in it seems, alot of bad. Cant win all the time. There's still alot that I'm excited to play, so overall I still found this to be a good E3 year despite the many disappointments.

• http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/4EPEVBFWDI2Q6PEED7MSML3XVI Rachelle

There is also a girl character in Guilty Gears, May, who uses an anchor- and Guilty Gears is fun as all hell in my opinion!

• http://twitter.com/RocMegamanX RocMegamanX

Shoot…I spoke too soon about May…^_^;

• http://www.youtube.com/egxtra John K. Spencer

I hate to say it, but I agree with you on that Sonic bit.
Sure, it's great that they're trying to go “retro” with it, but I would much rather prefer them to find a way for Sonic to once again go toe-to-toe with Mario like the days when Sega and Nintendo dominated the mainstream video game community.
I threw out a few ideas on how the Sonic series can truly make a successful 3D transition, and when I find it again, I'll be glad to share it with you. I will continue to hold out for Sonic to make his return to the spotlight.

In regards to your Pirates of the Carribean rant, I suppose if you gave a giant boat anchor to a GIRL, it might work. Case in point: May from Guilty Gear. Fear her anchor and the accursed pink whale.
Well, at least it isn't on a chain. :P

In any case, I kinda understand your rage against the stagnant nature of video games today. Newer games tend to be more of the same, with almost little to no improvement save for the graphical facelift. Hell, I'm still facepalming over the idea that they're bringing back that whole 3D gimmick when it was already dead nearly decades ago!
Nostalgia's great and all, but at some point, the current generation needs to bring something to the table that will be immortalized alongside the greats (and fails) of old.
Or I could just be rambling on about some meaningless nonsense. I tend to do that every now and again.

Anyway, that MvC3 fight between you and Joe was almost hilarious, as was your frequent encounters with people who felt you were in their way, though I have to say that your run-in with that Space Marine was the best. XD

• Ashenge

My god. You beat Joe like he owed you money. That was beautiful.

• QuetzaDrake

Yyyyep, the footage of you playing Tron just seemed like Prince of Persia. I swear Tron's wall-running animation was the exact same as the Prince's in Sands of Time.

Armada of the Damned's trailer looked pretty good. The gameplay looked alright. However, you're only half-right: it's not an RPG, it's an action RPG. You're running around and attacking enemies real-time, that would be an action RPG along the same lines as Secret of Mana. I wouldn't exactly call it God of War just because the guy is using a weapon on a chain (which, by the way, a boat anchor is AWESOME; you really need to calm down about the outlandish and silly weapons, relax and just enjoy the ridiculousness), though.

Shame you didn't get to see the 3DS. Oh well, we'll see it all eventually, and I saw a video of it being used (and seeing its amazing 3D capabilities). It's true the launch titles are mostly N64 remakes, but I think that's necessarily a bad move on Nintendo's part. This isn't like the PS3's launch where it had maybe three worthwhile games and was more expensive than a PC. Nintendo pretty much has the handheld arena by the balls and it doesn't really need to convince anyone to go for it over something else, so they probably feel like they're about to go in a different direction with their launch and giving their established old-school fans some favorites from the past.

• http://www.facebook.com/Treima Jimi Alexander

At first, I thought you were being your typical pessimistic self with Sonic 4. I thought “All I really want is a 2D Sonic game that doesn't suck.”

Instead…Oh. My. God. The EXACT SAME GAME AS SONIC 1?!?!? Fuck that game! I already have the Ultimate Genesis Collection for X360, I don't need an HD remix of the SAME game! I wanted new level design! 15+ years of no 2D Sonic, surely they'd have SOMETHING new.

• L1nk1

hey, where was that 3rd guy? :D

• http://dragonacesg7.livejournal.com/profile Dragons_Dusk

vanQuished… bullet time and a suit that injects you with drugs… You're Bain(sp?) from Batman?

anyway, thank you so much for the coverage Spoony, nice to hear some of this stuff

I really wasn't impressed with the opening line for Pirates of the Caribbean, thought they'd have a better verbal opening

what the heck is with Sonic??

Way to use Chris Redfield! hehe

• sniktbub

Not surprising that Kinect doesn't work. During their fucking presentation they used pre-rendered footage and the douchebag on stage badly mimicked the moves he was supposed to make. VanQuished looks fucking cool, and as for Pirates of the Caribbean….all I can say is what the fuck. I don't mind that it's a GoW knockoff, but an anchor as a weapon? You swing around a fucking ANCHOR? Even the films weren't that silly. But hey, it might still be decent, who knows.

• http://twitter.com/RocMegamanX RocMegamanX

Hey, if May(a pirate girl) from Guilty Gear(an overlooked fighting game series) can swing around an anchor, why not that guy? Though I’ve never seen a pirate swing around and anchor on a chain before…

• Eniliad

All hail the Big Fucking Q!

• http://onisworld.wordpress.com/ gogi

If you want a good tron game. Play fucking Tron 2.0. One ob the great games that nobody Played.

*shnief* Spony dismisses Fable 2 to as action adventure. He loves Fallout 2, he loves Deus Ex 1. I think i love spoony.

• SpaceMutantRaptorCowboy

How can you say that Fable II is an action/adventure game and not an RPG?

• http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/3FW2UYYSXZEQPN5JNYKS2JC47Y Johnny

Oh hell yes! Finally another person who will admit they are fighting for the light side (and leaving the sith in piles of hurt)! Seriously everyone I talk to or comments wants to be a sith.

• http://www.succubusvalley.com Succubus Queen

Oh yeah. I also have to add that Sonic 4 is a small project (hence why it's episodic). Like… DLC small. So, what do you expect, really? xD;
*besides something new or something of that sort*

• ohmrice

Throwing around anchors on chains you say?

Captain Murasa Minamitsu from Touhou did it best, by throwing ten at once. If you're gonna do something as ridiculous as throwing an anchor, you gotta go all out.

• Johndar

Well, this is just a guess, but I think Spoony is referring to the fact that Sonic 4 is re-using the EXACT same first boss from Sonic 1 for the first level. It's not just similar game play, it's the exact same thing. I saw a video where the dev was talking about having the homing attack now makes it different. No, it really doesn't. I'm down with a NEW 2d Sonic game, with NEW bosses and NEW levels but reusing shit from earlier sonic games just seems lazy to me.

• http://www.facebook.com/Manofmanycoats Robert Cousineau

Because almost all of the game was just running around stabbing pagans? The roleplaying elements failed miserably.

• SpaceMutantRaptorCowboy

I'm not saying that it had good roleplaying elements but it was definitely an RPG.

• dennett316

I typically hate RPG’s, but I loved Fable 2. That should tell you what you need to know, Fable is an action game with RPG elements. Even compared to Oblivion, Fable is heavily action oriented.

• http://twitter.com/SkyeVeran Skye Veran

…Guilty Gear also has a giant doctor with a paper bag over his face who wields a tree-sized scalpel. Spoony's complaint against the boat anchor was that it was “ridiculous.” Guilty Gear IS fun, don't get me wrong, but it's not something you compare a game to when you want to demonstrate said game's normalcy.

• http://twitter.com/RocMegamanX RocMegamanX

Wasn’t PotC a movie franchise whose antagonists included cursed, undead pirates, a mutated octo-crab pirate named Davy Jones, and a giant sea monster known as the Kraken?

That’s not exactly normal either. Sea-related mythology? Yes. Normal? No.

• Booloo

Fuck Sonic Fuck Team Sega Fuck Nintendo Fuck anyone associated with Sonic this is so far beyond bullshit its not even laughable anymore like a retarded dog doing tricks its just like a dead dog with a robot inside it making it move its just wrong kill it.

• http://www.facebook.com/Cybernerd129 Daniel O'Rourke

Being a Sonic fan myself, I will say that his games are basically unanimously terrible. Whenever Sonic Team gets an idea going, they end up screwing it up for the sequel. For example:
Sonic Adventure 2: Pretty good. Sonic Heroes: Shit.
Sonic Riders: Not bad. Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity: Shit.
Shadow the Hedgehog: Really shit. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006): Way off the scale.
With all of their new ideas being complete wastes of time it's basically their only option to go back to when Sonic was good. Basically, for the fans, having another Sonic 1 is better than having another Sonic 2006.

If Bioware has any sense at all, they'll allow people to skip the dialogue. MMOs are made for replayability; there's no way in the world that they wouldn't add a function to let people to skip through the dialogue. They'll probably even have an option to change the dialogue to text walls, so veterans of the game have a quick reference as to what conversation they'll be reading through.

The only time that impatience might show is when veterans are doing missions alongside new players. They'll all select their choices quickly and the newbies will have to wait for the dialogue and then ponder which choice they want to make. That could actually be problematic. But at least it will be different.

Spoony, I get what you're saying about sonic, I really do. But I just can't bring myself to want Sega to kill him. Sonic the Hedgehog was the first game I ever owned and still own, so I just can't do it.

Damn you schooled Angry Joe, nice job. I am super psyked for MVC3. I had my suspicion the kinect was some over glorified eye toy and a too late, too little gagdet to cash in on the same market the wii has been catering to for 4 years. The sony Move looks a little better but more ridiculous. I had hope you would have seen the 3ds, btw metroid is not a launch title ( I wish there was a metroid game, its not over exposed game series), the legend of zelda game is not official, might just be a tech demo. the only official remake is the starfox one which i will be picking since i never had a 64. You forgot to mention a new mario kart and a new kid icarus, reviving a long dead franchise, it looks like legend of zelda gameplay with flight mechanics. They really should had over sonic to someone else, there is the right way to make sequel classic gameplay (new super mario bros) and the wrong way, which is sonic 4 is offering. the title tells you how little it has evolved. I hope you will return to E3 next year, it will probly be bigger than this one, i feel a nintendo 3d home system is due.

• Sergeant_Shrapnel

Man Spoony, I have to say I expected Joe to kick your arse. But of course, you always pull through.

Thanks for doing all this coverage Spoony! You and I have different thoughts about what makes a game good, but I'm thankful you three run around E3 just for us (or rather, for me, because I don't know any of ya)

Also, Sonic 4 is episodic because the Genesis games were.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeremie-Caisse/100000114247204 Jeremie Caisse

I really enjoyed these E3 videos, you still managed to make them hilarious. The rant about Sonic 4 was epic but I call complete and absolute BS about what you said about FFXIV. The alpha was really fun, it was much better than that complete piece of crap that is WoW. I am tired of these turn-based RPG garbage that plagues the market, It still does have some turn based element but its less obvious. In fact I'm tired of all these washed-up titles that offers nothing new RPG games at all. Some jRPG are seen as garbage and yet they put innovation but people whines because they suck at it and refuse to deal with a learning curve.

I'm stiill optimist about Old Republic however and I look forward to it but Final Fantasy XIV won me over despite the fact that the series pretty much lost my interest since FFX. WoW was close to killing MMORPGs but there's some pretty good looking MMO's coming. WoW has the numbers but that's because its kind of a trend, like some fashion stuff but it doesn't change from the fact that its loathsome, ugly looking piece of crap that has no likeable characters, very little interesting storylines and nearly no good music.

• http://twitter.com/Cubemario Peter Lucky

I'll agree that WoW is getting old – but thankfully it will have an expansion soon that will breath new life into the game. However I'm in the FFXIV alpha – it's really terrible and almost unplayable, sorry. I eagerly wait for the beta, that looked much more revised.

None the less, Old Republic looks like it's gonna be the game that will forever replace WoW for me. That is if the game is what they're making it out to be. I've seen MMORPGs promise a lot of awesome features before and fail on several of them. Hopefully this isn't the case with this one.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Jeremie-Caisse/100000114247204 Jeremie Caisse

I wish you explained why FFXIV is terrible and almost unplayable, I’m in the Alpha as well and so far it is meeting all my expections which for me, is a good thing.

“Really similar” does not equate to “new” in my book. Just saying, if they want to call it a new game, it should have new content.

• http://www.facebook.com/lars.flyger Lars Flyger

It DOES have new content. New levels, a score attack stage, and the old bosses use new tactics after 4 hits. Also, homing attack

• Anonymous

That is not a new game. That is a patch, or an expansion pack at absolute, charitable BEST. It’s still sonic 1, or 1.5.

• http://twitter.com/Scott_is_Bored Scott

You know, 99% of anything Nintendo does anymore is just to cash in on nostalgia for their classic games. Take the 3DS Kid Icarus for example: It has exactly nothing to do with the NES game, but still is reusing an old IP. It's not even new gameplay; its basically just a reskin of Sin and Punishment. Why not just create a new world, or character, or SOMETHING!
Truthfully, I think Miyamoto is old and out of ideas and everyone else at Nintendo is either too lazy or too dickless to think of something creative.

• http://twitter.com/RocMegamanX RocMegamanX

An earlier comment stated, and I quote: “…calling Nintendo to stop their famous titles just because some people want brandnew and unique character(s) is a bit harsh. First, you don’t know if the new characters will hit the fans and second, why killing a series which is that famous?”

Also, you’re implying that Miyamoto is too “old” and “senile” to make video games anymore. At least he has experience. If Gunpei Yokoi were still alive making video games, would you say the same thing about him?

• http://twitter.com/Scott_is_Bored Scott

First: Gunpei Yokoi was a producer/Hardware designer. I respect him for being behind the Gameboy, but he also created Nintendo’s biggest failure: the Virtual boy. then he died in a “car accident”Second, Miyamoto is primarily a producer now, so how much input he actually puts into Nintendo’s current games is up in the air. He used to be the idea man. He isn’t anymore. Who comes up with Nintendo’s new and exciting ideas? I don’t know, but based on the disgusting lack of creativity they have had in the last 5 or so years, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say nobody. Is Miyamoto too old to make a fun game? I’m not sure. What I do know is the last game I know of where he is actually credited as a game designer is Wii Music. The next most recent? Wii Fit. The third most recent was Super Mario Galaxy which was pretty good if not derivative. Looking back over the last 10 years, he has produced quite a bit, but he wasn’t directly responsible for the direction or design of most of that.Miyamoto did come up with the concept for Nintendogs, but if that isn’t your fanboy cup of tea you might want to do a little research to games Miyamoto has actually designed/directed instead of just assuming everything that uses one of his characters was his idea. For example NSMBWii, Miyamoto didn”t direct, design, or even directly produce it. Better yet, he didn’t even get character design credit in NSMBWii. No, he is listed as a “general producer”. Do you know what a “general producer” is? It’s a made-up position meaning different things depending on which game Nintendo want’s people to think Miyamoto was involved with. In the case of NSMBWii, the Super Guide was his idea (I have no idea how well that worked, the game was easy I breezed through in 4 hours). In the case of Mario Kart Wii, “general producer” means the Wii Wheel was his idea.

• Anonymous

Are you seriously implying that Yokoi was murdered?

Seriously, I don't know why you are bashing on Metroid M and so on. I mean, sure there were some titles with Metroid, but calling Nintendo to stop their famous titles just because some people want brandnew and unique character is a bit harsh. First, you don't know if the new characters will hit the fans and second, why killing a series which is that famous?

Oh, and by the way, if you don't like those games, don't play it. It is easy to bash something, but to make something unique is more than difficult nowadays and there is no chance that it could live long enough to make money with it and…

• subrealms

Sega PR wants to tell us the old sonic is coming back therefore overemphasizes it by displaying a small bit of content that is way too similar to one level in the genesis version in E3, that's how I'm reading it. Have we seen the rest of the game? Even this one particular episode? New Super Mario Bros is also like the old one and the E3 was full of sequels anyway so I don't see a specific reason to bash this revival attempt. I'd rant about the bad sonic games inbetween but they could either do this one or kill the IP which isn't a real option to begin with.

I like to see you enraged about stuff in which you have a point but this one isn't an obvious mistake or failure or whatever you may want to call it. It's basically using an old formula to resurrect a dying IP that was until now, totally wasted and a sign of future new content done with the already working formula. Not a bad premise.

• LegendoftheSkies

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe they even announced a Metroid game for 3DS yet either :p

Although, I do agree that Nintendo is getting a little remake-happy with the 3DS and I'm hoping that's a trend that doesn't persist. It looks like it's getting some really solid 3rd party support though, and I'm psyched for Kid Icarus.

Regarding Sonic, I could say the same thing about Zelda or Street Fighter. Though to be fair, the only new Sonic games I've played were on the GBA and DS but they were pretty good. I'm hoping now that New Super Mario and now Donkey Kong are coming out we will soon get a new Castlevania in that style. The Castlevania reboot looks ok but I have not been a huge fan of any of the 3D ones. But who knows, maybe this one will surprise me.

About Pirates of the Carabean… Do all RPGs have to have turn based strategy combat? Ok, I have not seen the game so I'll take your word for it for now but I've always associated branching stories, character customisation, interaction and development with RPGs. I don't know, maybe there only very light aspects in this game.

You know, if you and Angry Joe go next year Joe should get a mic when he's filming, so we can hear the banter better. You guys seem to play off one and other really well. ^_^

Very interesting and entertaining videos, Spoony One, good job. I have only one bone to pick with you about this – no Witcher 2! I'm not sure what exactly did the CD-Project guys have there on E3 (and I wouldn't be surprised if they had next to nothing), but all in all you're one of the few major PC gamers out there and I was hoping for at least a mention, a rant, anything. Was the first game really so poorly received over the seas? Because all I have ever heard about it from the whole TGWTG Team was the Angry Joe's 5 seconds video (BTW I wonder since when are tits a BAD thing in gaming…).

• http://cynik.co.uk Cynik

World of Warcraft has been on it's knees for a year and a bit now since their latest expansion (Wrath of the Litch King) which was the beginning of the end for the game (well it was the 3.0 patch in TBC that introduced Wrath of the Litch King stuff in partially before the it came out). What I'm saying is that it wouldn't take much to take out World of Warcraft now.

Though looking at this new Star Wars game, I really don't like the look of it. It just looks like that game, “The Movies”. The gun shot effects, the animations, the look of the characters and the environment look terrible. They were probably trying to get away with a cartoony look that WoW introduced but even they struck a balance between cool and cartoony which I think Bioware have failed to achieve. To me the trailers for this new MMO are better than some of the battle scenes in the movies by far but thats where it stops as far as the game is concerned.

This game will probably peak 2-3 million but as I see it, people will get bored of playing in a game that looks that bad to play.

WoW at it's peak was at 14.5 million in the end of TBC but with the loss of China WoW players and general decay its now at 8-9 million (guestimate). The last figures that were released were back in 2008 (11.5 million).

Personally the only MMO that can take down World of Warcraft, is a Blizzard made product. Though something that will be growing in size immensely over the coming couple of years is EVE-online which I've started playing again, because in about half a year they will be releasing Incarna (The ability to walk in stations and large ships) aswell as Dust 514 (a console FPS) that will allow people to join the EVE-universe as mercenaries to fight on planets, cities, space ports etc.

EVE is what I'm looking forward to as an evolutionary type of MMO, all being on one server with hardcore PVP rules. Where as this just gonna be another WoW-style MMO with voiced missions. WoW will always be the market leader till blizzard release a new MMO.

My $0.02 atleast :)

Great vid Spoony though.

• http://automan2000.wordpress.com/ Automan2k

You’re kidding right?? I hope you are kidding either that or you really have no idea what you are talking about.

WoW is more popular now than ever before and the more casual-friendly atmosphere of WOTLK has brought even more people in than BC did. Sure, a lot of whiny “hardcore” players keep threatening to quit but in the end they drop thier $15 every month and keep right on going. On top of that, the hardcore players are only about 2% of the overall player base so Blizz is not bending over backwards to appease their whining.

EVE Online is a good game but is far too hardcore to attract a large enough player base to come close to challenging WoW. I really thought that the success of the Wii would have squashed this whole idea that a game has to be hardcore to be successful but some people simply will not learn.

Do at least a minimum of fact-checking before you post your opinions as facts.

• http://twitter.com/OlivawTweet Olivaw

I’m pretty sure that EVEN IF WoW is hitting eight or nine MILLION people playing it and paying fifteen dollars a month, and therefore making ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS A MONTH, that it’s still the king of all MMOs and is not “on it’s knees.”And once Cataclysm comes out, fuck me that’s a lot of money.

• http://cynik.co.uk Cynik

I’m not saying the game is going to die though what I’m saying is that evidently it’s on it’s knee’s for a declining level of quality. The game is getting worse every day, every patch and every expansion. Cataclysm sounds really terrible, taking away the last bastion of awesomeness left in the game (Azeroth) and with that, what are you left with? A really bleak future. It’ll take a while for wow to die, 10 years, maybe 20 but the process has already begun.

• http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/WCXFKYSH3TO5YTBJZRK7N6VVEI Stephen

The only problem I had with this is your opinion on the 3DS, you greatly exaggerated the amount of remade N64 titles they were putting out. As for Zelda, that's getting a HUGE overhaul in terms of dungeons, much of the gameplay and a massive graphical update. I'm not sure about Star Fox or Metal Gear Solid (although they're some of my favourite games too and I can't wait to try them out in 3D) but those three are the only major remakes I see on this list.

You have games like Kid Icarus, Paper Mario 3, Mario Kart, Resident Evil, Layton, Dragon Ball, Gundam, Monkey Ball, Sonic, Kingdom Hearts, Batman, Assassin's Creed and the like. Personally I think it's the strongest console launch line up (although which of these will be appearing at launch is so far unconfirmed) that I've ever see. Nintendo are really going out of their way both hardware and software wise.

I was a bit disappointed in PotC from what you showed; the trailer made it look immensely good and almost got me thinking of a Mass Effect quality adventure in terms of story and charaterisation. Also disappointed in the consensus of Sonic 4, but oh well.

And yeah, The Old Republic looks incredible. First MMO since WoW that I'd actually consider putting down a monthly fee on.

Know your games before you say it's just a 'reskin.'

• jade_Knight

No, you can't say the same about Zelda or Street Fighter at all, if you can say it it'd be because you haven't played them, since even if the Zeldas look alike, all of them introduce a whole new plot, let me remind you than Link is usually a different person in every game, and a lot of new elements that make the game interesting and fun to play. As for SF, SSFIV introduced 10 new characters, new moves for the old characters and a whole new story mode for everyone, and one of the best story modes in a fighting game I've ever seen, since it gives a lot of development to most of the characters. As for the 3D Zelda and SF they are just ports of older games, just that.

So no, it's just that Sega missed the point of Sonic ever since they started to copy the Mario franchise with Sonic Drift back on the GG, that's right they tried to turn Sonic into Mario, giving him friends and retarded spin-off games, and that simply didn't work, because:
1-Mario has a lot of spin-off games, but even then, he still has his main platforming series of games, which are still great, unlike Sonic, whose main games were just terrible, aside from the GBA ones, that were a step on the right direction but arrived way too late.
2-Mario spin-off games are good games, while Sonic ones vary from mediocre to terribly retarded, like Sonic Drift and Sega All-Stars Racing. Seriously, if you wanted to make a good Sonic racing game, then make a good R 2, Sonic doesn't need a car, ffs, that's plain retarded.
Also, the Sonic redesign was completely unnecessary, making him look all kewl is just pointless when the rest of the game is even more kiddie like. Sonic in CD was more cool than the original one, without any redesign, not Sonic in Adventures…
And finally, they once again tried to copy Mario, New Super Mario in this case, with Sonic 4, again missing the point, since NSMB was a new game after all, not just a remake with worse physics… So, what Sega should do if they ever want to resurrect Sonic, is remember that Sonic is not Mario, and he wasn't meant to be like him, so resume the GBA saga and stop trying to copy hi… Oh, nevermind, they already announced Sonic Galaxy, too bad, it's too late for him, how sad…

I would love to fight a giant enemy crab!

As some have stated, there are some new IPs coming to the 3DS. They recently put up a trailer for the new Resident Evil game, there's Kid Icarus of course, and some Warner Bros. games apparently.

• goodguya

We did get a Metroid game for the regular DS, so it is entirely possible that to pick up on the success (should it come) of Other M that they may (re)make a Metroid game for the 3DS. But yeah, nothing for the 64.

• goodguya

Shigeru Miyamoto does not dictate every idea that comes out of Nintendo. He did not create the first Kid Icarus, nor this one. This was an idea brought to Nintendo that they liked. It's not a rail-shooter. The trailer clearly shows free-roaming combat as well. The game does have a connection to the Kid Icarus world, with similar monsters and the same protagonist. Did you want them to showcase the 3DS with another sidescroller?

• http://twitter.com/Scott_is_Bored Scott

“Shigeru Miyamoto does not dictate every idea that comes out of Nintendo.”

I know that, but that vast majority of Nintendo’s mascots are all his. I also don’t like your phrasing because it implies that ideas are still coming out of Nintendo, but really they aren’t.
I maintain that using the Kid Icarus license is completely unnecessary. Rails or not the action still looks like Sin and Punishment. In regards to it’s connection with the “Kid Icarus World”, what world? it was a one-off 8-bit platformer with a minimalistic story. Which brings me once again to my main point: The only reason they made this into a Kid Icarus game instead of a new IP is because the only thing Nintendo currently knows how to do is market to 8-bit nostalgia. On top of that they turned Pit into an annoying bitch. That is despicable.

• http://twitter.com/RocMegamanX RocMegamanX

Last I heard, Kid Icarus for NES had a not-so-well-known sequel on the Game Boy. So, it’s not just “one-off”. And really, Pit is “annoying”? I only heard one line of voice dialogue from that trailer. You can’t really judge how he is from that. I’ve seen Kid Icarus when he was in Captain N. That probably would have been more annoying.

And at least, they’re using their auxiliary IPs again, or would you rather have “Mario, Zelda, and Metroid again? BOOOOO…”? Do some gamers even know what they want at this point?

• http://twitter.com/Scott_is_Bored Scott

I know what I want: New IP. Not old IP recovered for the sake of nostalgia.

Well Spoony… you just lost me as a viewer.

Look; I can understand your rage over the Sonic series not innovating, as the 2D series really is more or less just the same thing over and over again. But that the series should just “die”, well, as I feared you just went into “lolSonicissuchastupidfranchise” mode.

The thing is: Sonic is the only series Sega has that is still guaranteed to move copies. Like it or not, innovating or not, the series is still big with the “K&C Crowd” (Kids & Casuals). And that's the crowd Sega targets first and foremost, and it's always been who they've targeted, be it with the non-innovitative 2D series or the “gameplay-mixing to the point of suffering an identity crisis” 3D series.

I used to be one of the complainers unhappy with where Sega was going with the franchise, until I saw some neighbor kids and their parents getting way more mileage out of Sonic Unleashed than I bothered to. And that's when I realized the true nature of the franchise. And after thinking it over for a while, I've come to terms with that. And I'm fine with that.

Like I said Spoony, I respect your opinion, but you're having a fit over a series that never really was for you. And by beating a horse that every other internet-comedy reviewer has beaten beyond the point of tiredness, you lost me. At least I still have Doug and Lewis though.

Irony? No… it’s just that bitching about Sonic has become such a pathetic, incestuous fray that I’m tired of seeing and reading every internet reviewer pick on it and post that irrelevant (now as inevitable as the “Godwin’s Law” “Sonic Cycle”. And for a while I thought Spoony was above said fray. But I was mistaken.

Regarding Star Fox, I think you're missing something.
People who are interested to see a remake of Star Fox 64 (or Lylat Wars, as I'm used to call it) are not just interested by it because of nostalgia, rather because it was the last time Star Fox was awesome.
Star Fox Adventures was… an adventure game ala Zelda and the shooting segments were a rather weak attempt to justify the attachment to the Star Fox name.
Star Fox Assault was a game that had less content than Star Fox 64 (less levels, no alternate paths…) and more boring on-foot shooting than the actual space shooter action you're expecting from a Star Fox game.
Star Fox Command… well, I haven't played it but it does seem to stray even farther from the formula.

People don't necessarily want to play Star Fox 64, but they want a good Star Fox game and considering the franchise has been pretty lame in recent years, it doesn't come off as a surprise. Since the more recent games have been disappointing, developers should go back to the good games and see what actually worked on those games to improve the games that will come next.
The same thing can be said about Sonic and Megaman (and, to same extent, Final Fantasy).
The same thing can NOT be said about Mario (and, to some extent, Zelda) because this franchise managed to maintain its quality over the years.

@Taylor I don't think it won't do well, all he is saying is that since sega had done nothing in forever, you figured that when they came out with a sonic 4, it would not have just been a remake. It is sonic 4. Not Sonic. He was expecting more than something that came out in 1992 (I think that was the year) from sega. He has nothing against sonic. I agree with Spoony on that one. And again, a disagreement in an opinion with a critic is no reason to stop watching, we have all disagreed with spoony at one point. I love the beginning, when that guy said “Your in my way sir” It just cracked me up. I thought you were gonna do some air-juggling at that point.

I don't mind new games in long-running franchises if they're executed well since I'm an old fart and like to be reminded from time to time of the type of games that got me into gaming 20+ years ago. Likewise, I also like to try out new titles and concepts to see what will keep me gaming since playing nothing but the older-style titles won't cut it.

Games that introduce new concepts tend to be from indie developers since major developers rarely take the plunge into something that gamers may not embrace because the concept itself was bad or executed poorly. New concepts that are well-received eventually become the norm while good concepts that were just badly done are thrown away, rarely to be touched again.

Most gamers, frankly, don't want anything truly “new” save for a tweak here and there, but for the most part if a developer tries to overhaul a well-established franchise, for better or worse, most fans will bitch and moan and demand a return to “the way it should be.”

• http://www.facebook.com/taylor.spear1 Taylor Spear

Sega has done nothing in forever? The 3D series “innovates” to the point where each sequel little-resembles its predecessor. Sonic Heroes played little like Sonic Adventure 2. Shadow played little like Heroes. So on and so forth. While it is true that the 2D games have evolved little, that's no reason to accuse Sonic 4 of being a remake. That it is not. The level designs are different. The models are hi-def now, and the boss battles change attack patterns as the fights wear on. That's about as innovating as you can get in a 2D without mixing up the gameplay to the point of where the 3D series is having it's “identity crisis”.

And yeah, I can stop watching. It's not because I disagree with him… it's because he's joined other online reviewers in absolutely needless franchise-bashing. I don't go to Screwattack for this very same reason. Not a day goes by that someone on that site has to remind us that “Sonic sux naow.”

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Ciccaroni/72002282 Andrew Ciccaroni

Sega has done some stuff, but they have stopped putting effort into their games. Sega released Iron Man and Iron Man 2, games that could have easily been fun, but weren't because they didn't try. They released Alpha Protocol, which does not come near the expectations of it. They haven't released a good Sonic game in years, Even Virtua Fighter, which for a while was their only series worth playing, changes less from title to title than Street Fighter. Their releasing a slightly updated Sonic 1 in the place of Sonic 4 does not surprise me one bit, as they have not put effort into the games they make in years and thats inexcusable.

• http://www.facebook.com/taylor.spear1 Taylor Spear

Sonic 4 is in no way a remake of Sonic 1. Again, the art style is similar, but level designs are different. Levels themselves borrow from later games in the series (the Casino is from Soinc 2), and Sonic's moveset now includes the homing attack, a controversial attack from the 3D series. It's not that Sega isn't trying in this particular case, it's that they try too hard to please a bitchy old-school fanbase that pretty much specifically asked them *not* to innovate, and please their target “K & C crowd” more familiar with the new designs and new movesets at the same time. Now who they please more is yet to be seen, but this game is not “a slightly updated Sonic 1″. It is Sonic 4.

And that Sonic hasn't had a good game in years is, again, subjective. I had fun with Sonic Rush Adventure, which came out only about 2 years ago. It wasn't the most innovative game, but it was a solid portable time-killer

• whatislove

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrew-Ciccaroni/72002282 Andrew Ciccaroni

Looking back, even counting your game there, in 3 years Sega has released 2 good games, they make millions of dollars and release total flops. That is inexcusable. And Sega is not just remaking one game and adding things from other Sonic games? Well if a Sonic fan has played those games, why bother? I love Zelda, and Ocarina of Time is one of my favorite games of all time, but if they released the new Zelda and it was Ocarina of Time with the bosses updating their moves and a few changes in the dungeon, I would be pissed off. Sure, there's a formula for these games that works, but it doesn't mean you can take a game, update it, and claim that its a new game. And just feeding out the press releases from Sega doesn't overturn the fact that the bosses are the same, even if they slightly update their tactics.

• http://www.facebook.com/taylor.spear1 Taylor Spear

Funny that you mention Zelda, though. Spoony just recently accused the newest game *that* series of being “creatively bankrupt” as well.

So I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree on who's making the new game and who's just rehashing.

• Ubersnuber

People did ask for a new old-school Sonic though, but, ironically enough, it seems that they couldn't do it; shitty friends, stretched-beyond-belief Sonic, homing attack…I could go on.
This is not the 2D sonic hardcore old timers asked for. Shame, really.

But I do question how you managed to ignore how people have, for many years, been BEGGING Sega for a reboot.

If you really want new and unique experiences, you should actually give the Wii a shot. Nowhere else in the history of videogames since its heyday was there such a flood of new ideas and changes and polishes to gameplay as when that console came out. Examples include the WiiSports series, Endless Ocean, Elebits, Boom Blox, Red Steel 2, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Cursed Mountain, de Blob, Fragile Dreams, Little King's Story, Mad World, Zack and Wiki, Mario Galaxy, We Cheer 2… Some innovate more than others, but that, plus what DS brought new to the table, was the start to many new and fresh genre-breaking experiences.

I think part of this 'Spoony Experiment' is that you'll need to define truly what you want in games, personally, because I don't think it's what you keep clamoring for here. I don't think you really want 'new and unique, never-before-seen' experiences. What you seem to be calling for is more immersive, more 'real' D&D experiences in a virtual world. You want to live in those worlds and be the badass ninja/pirate/Jedi/warrior whatever of your dreams. You want Simulation taken to the next limit. Maybe I'm wrong, but what you currently want doesn't seem to me to be what you say you want.

On E3 coverage in general, I realize that being on the show floor is both more enlightening for you in some ways, and less enlightening than, say, watching footage from other sites. I think you got a lot of facts wrong, and while it'd be hard and impossible to fact-check everything, I think you should have allowed yourself some leeway instead of going 'bitchy mode' so quick on everything. I thought it was kind of embarrassing how often Angry Joe had to interrupt. He gained much more respect from me, and you lost some.

But I'm being judgmental, and I apologize, and might be being unfair. For a guy on the floor, you were very entertaining, and it was still great to watch your coverage. Love the “in my way” jokes, and I don't think anyone else would have the balls to yell, “BETRAYAL!” in a public hall like that. I just think it could have been more professional, and you could have been more open-minded.

One last note on Franchise Fatigue. I'm one who was annoyed by Zelda: Twilight Princess's blatant similarities to Ocarina of Time, but for someone who continues to follow Nintendo, I feel like that was the one misstep. Maybe they haven't changed it 'enough', but every iteration has had its own unique take on the franchise – same as Mario games. For Sonic, sometimes you have to take a step backwards, to find what made it great, before you can go forwards once more. I don't think anyone has heard enough details about the new Zelda to say how similar it will be to the previous games. The only things we've heard and seen are new controls which are very different and sound very immersive, and the new graphic stylings which I think look fantastic. Even at E3, we don't see everything, and I'm still game to wait and see.

Classy E3 coverage, Spoony. I honestly don't understand why people would want to nitpick about your thoughts. This is your show, and you got an opportunity that most of us will only dream of: the opportunity to go to E3, and you could have just turned in some lackluster coverage, but the skits (the aforementioned Jedi and Joe fight come to mind), and your interviews, I feel, are fantastic.

Because he doesn't like the look of Sonic 4, he's lost you as a viewer? Are you high? It's called a difference of opinion, nothing to throw a hissy fit over. He's also spot on though, why remake the first game? People wanted a new Sonic game in the old style, not a rehash of what we've already completed numerous times.
And the 3D Sonic games are terrible, unquestionably poorly made and lazy. Just because it's a so-called “kids game” doesn't excuse awful gameplay and bad design.
The old games are classics and can be enjoyed by young and old alike, the new 3D games are insulting even to the audience targeted and there's no excuse for poor games.

I'm sure Spoony will miss such a “dedicated” fan who loses his shit over a slight difference of opinion….pretty pathetic.

• http://www.facebook.com/taylor.spear1 Taylor Spear

See that’s the thing… to *you* they’re unquestionably poorly made and lazy. Taste is subjective. Many consider the Sonic Adventure games on Dreamcast to be good games, and their gamerankings/metacritic score actually bear that out. And again, I didn’t care for Unleashed, but there are those who liked it. Kids. Adults playing with those kids. Some fans. Again. Taste. And I found Spoony’s rant to be in bad taste. That’s my subjective opinion. So I stopped watching. I’m not losing my shit. People who callously call this title a rehash, or rail against the new character design, are the pathetic ones losing their shit

My issue with Sonic 4 is that it changes TOO much. There’s a fucking homing attack for crissakes. A HOMING ATTACK. A homing attack, that was only introduced in the 3D games because they couldn’t figure out how to make Sonic jump with precision in 3D. And they’re bringing that shit into a 2D game? How does that make ANY sense?

Angry Joe was good in this too, I've become a fan of his since Spoony and Angry Joe teamed up for that Strek Trek Online skit. Anyways I'm pretty sure Spoony pissed off a lot of people, complaining about many of the games, but there were certainly games he did like there.

I wish that whole motion gaming fad would go away too. I like to just sit around and “relax” when I play my games not fling my hands and arms like a idiot. Doing all that crap isn't a replacement for actually going outside and doing something either. All in all though interesting and entertaining series of videos. The hotel one especially.

I agree, great interviews abound. According to some though all he did was whine and complain….those people can be safely ignored though, complex opinions are clearly too much for them to grasp.

“Gaaaaaaasp! He said something negative, he violently hates Sonic and, by extension, me! I'm no longer watching. WAAAAA!!!” Idiots.

Fans wanted a new 2D Sonic, with some callbacks, and that's what that boss is. It's a callback, who changes its attack patterns later in the fight. That makes it new enough to not be a rehash.

• Anonymous

Later in the fight? The fight that takes like, a minute and a half? Less with the homing attack probably. Listen, I love Sonic, and I haven’t given up on 4, but reusing the same boss from sonic 1 IS lazy.

There is *nothing* innovative about the Wii. It's an underpowered system that's built around an annoying gimmick. There's no new dimension opened up by waggling a stick in the air; in fact, it makes games looser and generally sloppier. Innovation!

Sure, it appeals to people who don't play games in the first place, because anyone who's played them before wants to be able to control their fucking characters with precision.

• foodlespane

Funny how if it's an opinion you disagree with, it's suddenly “whinny” (sic), but all the other times, you didn't speak up because you don't know any better. Huh.

Thanks for the unintentional, hypocritical comedy, good sir.

• foodlespane

LOL, needless. Somebody needs to link this Sonic guzzler up to that graphic about the ebb and flow of Sonic hope and disappointment. It's like Sonic fans have goldfish-like memories or something.

Below, you said, “Again, the art style is similar, but level designs are different.”

You need to look up the meaning of “remake”. Oh well. You are what you play. Enjoy your dolled-up version of the Genesis game!

I think that they should definitely stay at the Clarion again. That Hotel from Hell video was seriously one of the funniest things I have ever watched. “Joe, without missing a beat, TRIES THE T.V.”

Comments like this usually let me know who owns a Wii and who doesn't.

As a long time gamer, I do want to control my characters with precision, which is why I prefer the Wii Remote over standard controllers in shooters. It's nice to be able to shoot where you're aiming instead of having aim assist constantly holding your hand.

And do you mean to tell me that all critics are lying when they say Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 had absolutely sublime controls? And what about the post-e3 previews saying Skyward Sword had some of the best controls out of any Zelda game? How about all the other positive previews that just about every showcased Wii game is getting? Stop being such a fanboy.

• sifer2

Regarding The Old Republic game while the voice acting an the more single player storyline is something new for the MMORPG genre. An certainly an impressive hook to draw people in. I have to question how good of an MMO it is going to be. I mean if your spending most of your time running off doing your Hero quest which looks to be instanced with your NPC companion your not playing an MMO at all. Just a single player game with a monthly fee. I'll probably buy it an play it but if there is no real MMO with real MMO stuff to do like great PvP, fun guild content like dungeons, raids, an all that sort of thing I doubt i'll play it more than a month or two.

As for Sonic 4. I dunno if its a straight remake past the first zone. If it is that would be messed up for sure. But you can't blame Sega for doing this because its what fans keep telling them to do. To just go back to when the series didn't suck an try to recapture the magic. It's basically New Super Sonic Bros.

But yeah aside from that mostly agree with what Spoony says about most of the games. Many of them just fail to impress. Like Prince of Persia: TRON of time.

• http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1536912113 Ian Kovich

Sega keeps making them because people keep buying them, much like how people keep buying Final Fantasy, hoping the next one will be better than 7.

• http://twitter.com/OlivawTweet Olivaw

Dang Spoony, didn't you see all those third party games for the 3DS? Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV FOR GOD'S SAKE. SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV THAT I CAN TAKE ANYWHERE. JUST HOOK IT UP TO MY VEEEEEEINS.

And then there's the Nintendo stuff: a new Paper Mario game, old school RPG style, with a chain chomp companion! Kid Icarus, which looks awesome! Starfox 64 which, yeah, it's a remake, but they're talking about puttin' new stuff in the remakes so they're not just remakes, and besides, PORTABLE STARFOX 64. And then there's Pilotwings! A new Pilotwings game! I mean COME ON DUDE!

Plus the hardware and graphics look amazing. I mean, shit, I saw the demo for MGS3 on the 3DS, that shit blew me away. Combine that with Epic Mickey and Kirby Epic Yarn and the new Zelda for the Wii, and I don't see how you can be disappointed!

And man, I know you didn't get to see all of the convention, but lemme tell ya, the REAL fitness machine is the Kinect now. They were big on all that jumping around, let me tell you.

• http://twitter.com/RocMegamanX RocMegamanX

But how are gamers of the future supposed to know who Sonic is if they just stop making the games? I'd say the same thing about Mario, Zelda, and Metroid.

• http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Blayney/683346875 Michael Blayney

Congratulations, you have identified me as someone who doesn't own the worst console since the Jaguar. Your powers of comprehension are duly noted.

I haven't liked Zelda since A Link to the Past (and even that one didn't really wow me, but I at least enjoyed it), so Skyward Sword is utterly irrelevant to me. Same with Mario Galaxy; I don't really care for platformers. And no console controller holds a candle to a mouse; I like FPS games as much as the next guy, but I am not going to kid myself into thinking I'm getting the best experience playing them on consoles versus a PC.

I presume you had a point in there?

Coming from someone who owns a Wii… motion controls are a gimmick. It's nothing new, Nintendo has tried it before with the NES and failed (Remember the Power Glove?). Sure, motion controls are much better now, but considering my favorite game on the Wii has been Muramasa: The Demon Blade… which is a 2d side scroller where you can use your old Gamecube controller… that's just pathetic.

And the impressive sales of any of their new games further proves that traditional gamers are in the minority of the Wii gaming community.

Blayney also makes a good point regarding FPS games. PC has them down as having the best controls possible. The mouse is much easier to control while at the same time being capable of lightning fast reflexes, something both the Wii and Traditional gaming consoles lack. If it's one genre the Wii will never be able to revolutionize, it's the FPS genre.

Admit it, it's a gimmick that happens to be a cash cow. Nintendo doesn't innovate like they boast, they just polish the turd and call it a diamond. It's more of a chore to play any Wii game with motion controls, it's not very fun, and this is coming from someone who is physically active practically every day because of my job.

• PKrockin

No new games for the 3DS? Paper Mario, Kingdom Hearts, Kid Icarus, Pilotwings, Resident Evil, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, DJ Hero, Contra, Mario Kart, A Boy and His Blob, de Blob 2, Animal Crossing, Super Monkey Ball, Animal Crossing, Steel Diver.

Miyamoto specifically addressed your concern in the press conference.

6:10: Miyamoto: “If all we were going to do is port the Nintendo 64 games all we would have are old games in 3D. We're having fun adding new features.”

• Ithilgore

I do think you gave the 3DS an overly harsh look there, because the line-up so far seems to be one of the best I've ever seen for a launch. True, a number of the games are remakes/ports, but they're all remakes of damn good games, and games you couldn't get on any Nintendo platform before, not to mention that's just the initial games.

• http://www.facebook.com/AdamCa Adam Caverhil

Yes sir, but they are all games we have all played, and purchased 30 times on other nintendo platforms, and the prospect of playing, and paying, them again is simply not appealing for some people. People like me.

3D is such a gimmick, I really hope this handheld has more to offer than some cheesy graphical upgrade.

• Anonymous

I have no idea what anyone means by saying a “cheesy graphical upgrade”, seeing as pretty much every console ever is expected to upgrade its graphics from the previous one. The 3DS seems to be on the same level as the Gamecube, which would be a full generation leap from the DS (around N64 level), which is certainly a large leap for a handheld. The 3D part is entirely optional, seeing as you can just turn it off.

Once again, the only remakes from Nintendo are Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64. SF64 has never been available on anything but the N64, and none of the games in the SF series since have played like it (a major complaint from the fans). OoT was an extra with a Zelda collection that came with Wind Waker, but that’s the only other time we#ve played off the N64. Certainly, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess play similarly to it, but that’s not really a reason to dislike a redone version for the 3DS, especially when there plenty of improvements they could make, and have said they’ll make (and it is still considered one of the best games ever made).

Other Nintendo games announced so far are new Pilotwings and Nintendogs, not remakes but sequels, Pilotwings having been dormant for over a decade, and this only being the second Nintendogs. There’s a new Mario Kart and Animal Crossing yes, but you can’t have expected them to not make those.

Other non-Nintendo ports include Super Street Fighter 4, which was never released on a Nintendo platform until now, and MGS 3, which once again hasn’t been on a Nintendo platform before. We know very little about MGS3′s remake, it may be a straight port or something quite different.

The new Kid Icarus is the first in its series in 19 years, and is nothing whatsoever like the other two games in the series.

Finally we don’t know anything about the new Resident Evil, Dead or Alive, Kingdom Hearts, Saint’s Row, Ninja Gaiden or Assassin’s Creed games, but several are already confirmed to be brand new games. In any case those are some impressive third party franchises to get so early, and yet again, many are new to Nintendo platforms

I was being fair in saying there were a number of remakes/ports. The line-up as announced so far is still one of the best early line-ups of any platform, and probably the best ever for a Nintendo one, not to mention the majority of the titles are third party, something Nintendo’s struggled with getting since the SNES era ended.

I’ll correct you on this one: These are not games we have all played these are the games only some of Nintendo’s today customers have played. The vast majority of their expanded audience doesn’t even know Ocarina of Time or Starfox 64 existed. As to the other aspects: Software sells hardware and no one know this better than Nintendo, this approach is the key to their today’s success.

I would say Blizz is starting to scrape the barrel with their expansions. Now pretty much any class can be a class they couldn't be before and half of them make no sense at all and it really breaks the immersion of the game when I see a tauren paladin running around. I hope the Warhammer 40k MMO will knock it out of the park so I can be addicted to something else I really love. ^_^

Oh god Sonic 4. I'm a huge Sonic fan, and when I heard that they were making a new one without the stupid characters from the Adventure series and onward I was so excited. But the months leading up to E3 I saw more footage and I noticed the boss fights reminded me of the ones from Sonic 1 and 2. Why didn't they just call this game Sonic 1/2? It's also kinda nice that they added the Homing Attack from the later series, but seriously it'll just make the boss fights super easy. God it's so depressing that they had to fuck it up like that.

Now if only Konami of America actually did something good with the Bemani series at E3 that would've made up for it, but we all know that'll never happen.

I’d like more efforts with what Secret Rings had to offer. Focus the game objectives more on what the game engine does best (NOT walking backwards, NOT collecting tiny, level-specific items, NOT doing anything more fitting in regular 3D platformer) and we’d have a winner.

Spoony, I don't know how it is possible, but I disagreed with you in about 90% of your coverage (the other 10% would be Deus Ex 3 and Civ 5), and still enjoyed the coverage. Keep it up. I also wouldn't mind if you took a couple of weeks off to take a rest from the hell the E3 might have been.

The 40k MMO just like WAR now, will be a PvP focused game. Its going to have a serious lack of content and will be a PvP niche game. Not that that is a bad thing. I love WAR and am playing it now. but niche games like that arent something you can really get addicted to.

Yeah, I'm with Spoony on this one, I don't care about the Kinect at all. It's probably gonna cost 150 bucks, plus the games are still gonna be 60 bucks each.

Could you imagine paying 60 bucks for Wii Sports? Well you might have to do that for Kinect Sports.

• TheFizl

Actually thats not exactly accurate regarding TOR. The game is an MMO through and through and they've been going to great lengths including at E3 this year to show that. The story missions are not entirely instanced, and are not necessarily single player as you can group up in order to do them. They also have world quests which are more group focused. Im not sure where the its a single player game with a monthly fee comes from as they have comfirmed on multiple occasions raid and guild content as well as single group content.

They certainly have the money to develop alot of content for this game as well as lots of different kinds of content that will appeal to everyone. I dont think people really understand how much all that development money will transfer into content.

Megaman 9? He's played 9. He made a comment about shooting robotic bees from arm-cannons in his Street Fighter 2010 review.

• http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1318935977 facebook-1318935977

Did he like the game? I'm just wondering what he thinks because Sega is essentially doing with Sonic 4 what Capcom did with Megaman 9 and 10 (only they're keeping new-gen graphics).

• MissAshley

True, but the real issue is what was fun then and is it fun now. Many people still enjoy the older Mega Man games and these same people enjoy MM9 and MM10. Many people still enjoy the older Sonic games, yet for some reason or another aren’t responding favorably to Sonic 4. Meanwhile, people who never “got” the older Sonic games when they were relevant are looking at Sonic 4 and thinking “Why?”

Honestly, I think we’re finally seeing Sonic’s 90′s marketing influence crack away to reveal the true qualities of the old games.

I think it's because Spoony was never a fan of Sonic, even since the beginning. Pretty sure he has mentioned that before.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that was in a commentary of his somewhere. It didn’t sound like he absolutely hated the old Sonic’s, but he never really got into them either. And I do disagree with him, though I’m not going to go off on a fanboy rant about it.

But since I’m sick of hearing people say “Just kill the franchise.” I’ll just say that you could…oh I don’t know, not play them? Besides, that ruins any chance of another good game coming out, ESPECIALLY on the handhelds.

• http://www.facebook.com/LordMalvern Brian Puschell

My thoughts on this:

Very sad to hear you weren't able to see the 3DS. I stood in line for three hours on the first day of the show to see it and it was easily the best thing I saw on the show floor. Of course I'm not media so I didn't get to see the awesome stuff like TOR or Deus Ex 3 or even Civ V (still pissed they had that behind closed doors)

I believe a lot of your judgments of the games I did get a chance to see were fair, though I did notice you didn't complain about MvC3 being MvC2 with Deadpool and 3D graphics. I agree that the game industry as a whole is starting to stagnate in terms of gameplay mechanics. We need to come up with new genre-bending games that combine the best elements of pre-existing genres into a fun and immersive whole. I do not believe you will ever find that sort of thing from franchises however. Franchises are too important to a company's bottom line to be messed around with all that much. Some take that risk and succeed, but few are willing to take that risk when millions of dollars are on the line.

Hope to see you next E3!

Sorry, but I have to make a note of this. Spoony, you managed to make a Reservoir Dogs reference that thus far no one has noticed. That's one of my favorite movies of all time, and I love you for managing to work in that reference whilst playing Marvel vs. Capcom 3. You're eternally awesome.

• http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1318935977 facebook-1318935977

In some ways I agree with you. He's absolutely right that Sonic 4 is the same as it was on the Genesis. He's right that they need to do something different. However, I used to be a Sonic fanboy sort of, so I can understand why people are getting mad that he said all this. Sonic fans are pissed at the newer games for sucking so much and for deviating from the aspects that made them enjoy Sonics 1-3 so much. They are EXTREMELY susceptible to nostalgia. Seeing Sega cater to this nostalgia makes them feel good. For them going back to the original formula is an awesome idea. It's a matter of interpreting what audience that the game is appealing to.

I'd also like to point out that this Sonic Colors game Wii is trying to change: It retains the whole mechanic of switching between 2d and 3d that Sonic Unleashed had (it looks a lot like Sonic Unleashed from what I've seen), but also adds rpg elements in the form of upgrading and customizing Sonic's abilities. … Now whether or not this WORKS remains to be seen. Personally, I hated Sonic Unleashed. I hated the werewolf and town segments, but I also hated the running segments because it felt like an on-the-rails game. Instead of a platforming game where you navigated through the level by running and jumping, it felt like you were on a straight path, pressing buttons when the que came up to avoid obstacles. It feels like quicktime event hell.

• MissAshley

“For them going back to the original formula is an awesome idea. It’s a matter of interpreting what audience the game is appealing to.”

Except I keep seeing impressions from people holding Sonic Colors in far higher regard than Sonic 4.

“We need to come up with new genre-bending games that combine the best elements of pre-existing genres into a fun and immersive whole.” Maybe, but, like you said, it's too much of a risk for video game companies that could hemorrhage money from their “veins” and leave them a dead, decaying corpse.

Which is why Sega keeps using Sonic.
Capcom keeps using Megaman, Street Fighter, and Resident Evil.
Nintendo keeps using Mario, Zelda, and Metroid.
Square keeps using Final Fantasy…though they could just make a sequel to Einhander: Zweihander(two-hander).

3D Realms spent more than a decade trying to make Duke Nukem Forever, trying to take ideas from other pre-existing games of the times and trying to outdo said other games. Alas, they're out of business and the owners are being sued by Take Two. Here's the proof:http://www.wired.com/magazine/2009/12/fail_duke_nukem/

Just plan out and make the game, and then we'll see what happens.

Actually, MVC3 also has Super Skrull, Dormammu(rumor), Dante, and Chris Redfield confirmed. I haven't played MvC2 to tell you the truth. Only MvC1, and I apparently sucked at it, because I couldn't beat Onslaught.

• Anonymous

Dormammu isn’t a rumor, he was in the latest trailer for the game. Apparently it isn’t simply MVC2 in 3D either, there’s a number of new gameplay features that you have to play to see.

• NostalgiaOCD

I don't entirely agree with your Sonic 4 rant. You seem incredibly pissed that it's a remake of a 10 year old game, but if you've noticed, that's exactly what every series is doing. Mario with New Super Mario Bros, Megaman with Megaman 9 and 10, Bionic Commando with Bionic Commando Rearmed etc… I'm curious what you thought of those. Society seems to be in a general nostalgic mood (INUNDATED with remakes of movies, shows and games lately), thus why Sonic 4 was created and I'd say it is far better then making another shitty 3D one. The point that really kind of made me say “wait, what???” was that you say the series is unevolving. Yet, I'd say the fact that they keep TRYING to evolve it and make it what it cannot be, is exactly why it's failing. My personal opinion is that the series needs to die once and for all, then they should make a Sonic 4 ten or more years down the road, when the general public (I.e. non-rabid Sonic fans) might miss the series. But I can say that for many franchises (starting to look over to you Zelda).

Thanks for the Old Republic facts. It really, really sounds like an MMORPG I might actually want to play. Maybe even be willing to pay a monthly subscription (that would be an amazing feat). My friend once tried to get me into WoW but I just didn't like it. I never felt connected to the world, just another random guy collecting fur and shit. The only part I liked was raids, working with a random team of strangers every raid was pretty interesting, but it got old eventually. The only MMO I've ever been hooked on was Ragnarok Online, but that was back in my anime obsessed days. I absolutely LOVE, L-O-V-E LOVE branching storylines and moral choices (the grayer the better though). It's why I'm quickly becoming a massive fan of BioWare. Damn their games are great.

I agree with you. Except for the part about Sonic needing to die for a while to come back successful. That hasn't really been helping all the other resurrected games lately. Bionic Commando, X-Com, an a couple other reboots of really old franchises seem to be every bit as mediocre. I think they just need to take their time with Sonic games. They pump them out so fast just to make a quick buck that I don't think they have a chance to be good. A lot of people actually liked the Adventure games for their time. Had they spent the proper time refining that formula instead of releasing fast buggy games like Sonic Next-Gen then the series would not have become the big joke most people now see it as.

I wouldn't say so much this is game companies riding a wave of nostalgia so much as it is game companies intentionally kicking up waves of forced nostalgia and attempting to ride them. Admittedly, a few nostalgic properties have been successful in the past few years and much like the comic book movie craze, everyone and their horse is trying to “recreate the magic” with their IP.

• johnnycumlately

nostalgia is right maaaan, spoon master what wre u thinking!!! lol

• Raventail

Great coverage Spoony. Glad to hear you and Joe are excited with most games I'm eagerly anticipating. You've also got me interested in Shogun 2: Total War. Though I'm amazed with the complainers these videos are bringing out. It raises the question which is worse: Whiny Sonic fans or whiny Final Fantasy fans?

• Ubersnuber

I've noticed that several people here criticise others for “nitpicking” Spoony.
So, in short: People aren't allowed to voice their opinion on the subject? This comments section is virtually a “pat on Spoony's shoulder”-function?
This is Spoony's job! This isn't one of his typical shows. This, as he said himself, is him reporting on behalf of all his followers. That's called reporting. And on some fields I feel he could of done a great deal better in that respect.

Now go ahead and sharpen those pitchforks.

• thegamingbrit

Haha metroid wasnt on the n64. Spoony's endless trail of unflawless acuracy has ended. WAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I kid these videos are hilarious with the sonic 4 rant.

@NostalgiaOCD What you have said is entirely wrong. First all those series have had several improvements and only going back to the original formula not the game and graphic improvements. The least changed out of the ones you listed is New super mario bros but it had some nice changes and not a complete copy.

Also its really not a ten year death because anyone playing a DS has found some good and may I say great sonic games that stick true to the old formula. As for the zelda comment though I don't like the look of the new Zelda and almost see it turning to using ratchet and clank devices. Its still attempted to change and has been using the wii controls which is a huge change itself. Then adding the fact that's not including the GBA and DS Zelda which give a twist to the classic zelda each time you play them.

Finally great review spoony.

WoW was a niche game for lifeless idiots

• http://www.facebook.com/Manofmanycoats Robert Cousineau

I agree. The reason the game has taken so long is mainly because they have been working extremely hard on proving people wrong on that regard. They wanted enough content in the game to be able to say its not just Kotor with a monthly fee.

If the raid content is anything like the story content, its going to be amazing.

• http://www.facebook.com/AtlasRedux Johnny Lunder

There, finally time to comment as day 3 was uploaded ^^
Thx a million for the coverage, Spoony.
I get annoyed with the others “pro” reviews, your personal style is so much more entertaining.
Also, you play exactly the same games as me ( almost ), so I can identify with your opinions regarding the games.
Looking forward for Civ5!

• mrgphantome

Spoony is AWESOME when it comes to interviews. He comes off as professional and experienced, even though he hasn't done a lot of interviews. After this, I feel that Spoony should definitely do more interviews if he can find opportunities to do so.

I do feel that Spoony was very close minded though about a lot of the new software and hardware. When viewing demos, it's all about the potential of the product. Nothing is really done at E3 and it's pretty much all Alpha builds. Unfortunately Spoony came off as very cynical as opposed to honest. Kinect/Natal is a really perfect example of this, as he talks about it “not working.” He tried one game and basically dismissed it, mostly because it's not only new, but it's different.

I hope for future events that Spoony goes to, he'll keep a more open mind much like how Angry Joe had.

• zenithl
Agh, you’re right! Homefront involves North Korean forces, not Vietnamese.
Judging from the backstory trailer, the enemy is the group of nations that were annexed by a unified Korea. Which, TECHNICALLY, does include Vietnam. So yeah…

• TheFeydakin

YOUR IN MY SPOT SIRE!

• foodlespane

In fairness, a remake is a huge improvement from Sonic the Werehog. Just… not by much. Then again, seeing Spoony's fatigue over sequels and remakes in both the gaming and movie industries, it's understandable why he reacted the way he did with Sonic 4.

• sassamura

chuldren with spniper rifles? that was disturbing what were they thinking?

• Raventail

Well that's pure Spoony, and his reasoning for why he didn't like various things isn't groundless. I mean think about it. Sega hasn't turned out a great Sonic game in years and the only sign they're finally cluing in on what made the original games fun is to basically release the same games with improved graphics? As for Kinect, he obviously doesn't care for the whole motion gaming. He did give it a try and he wasn't impressed, can't fault the guy for just not liking something. Also given what he said about the Kinect demo it didn't seem to work. Now you really can't expect most people to experience a poorly functioning demo and walk away thinking “This will be a huge step in gaming!”

Though you're definitely right on his interviewing talents, he knocked those out of the park.

• thehivemind33

Huh, well I guess that means I don't have to choose between SWTOR and the 40k mmo! Although that can probably get pretty expensive…

• mrgphantome

His dislikes weren't groundless, but it was very dismissive and stubborn views. Xcom for example, Spoony will not give that game a chance no matter what just because it is a “betrayal” in that it is not a strategy game and they didn't demo the classic aliens. He's hard wired to hate that game, and it's unfair to report on something that your automatically going to hate. It might be Spoony's style, but when you head to an event such as E3, I felt that he should have taken things a little more seriously and more open minded.

As for Kinect, I'm sorry, but he tried ONE game and the rest is hearsay. Hearsay shouldn't ever be used as a method to report on something. Just because he saw someone having difficulty doesn't mean other people were. Personal experiences are key for anything, and Spoony admitted to playing only one non-major Kinect game. Then he dismissed, and most of that is probably stemming from the fact that it's new and different.

• TheFizl

Wow wasnt a niche game. nor was it ever. And im sorry blind haters of wow and wow players are usually more retarded than the vast majority of WoW players.

• TheFizl

Eh well, i actually dont see MMOs as being more expensive. They have so much content that the monthly fee is minimal when compared to the $50 every 2 weeks to a month you spend on other games.

• Raventail

Perhaps, then again these are simply his views and shouldn't effect your own. If they truly are entertaining and enjoyable sounds like Spoony will be missing out and he only has himself to blame. Like with any critic you have to take their opinion with a grain of salt.

• lkraider

If I want an impartial and balanced review of E3 there's plenty of other websites with that. What I want here is to see the reactions and thoughts of Spoony about it, something which I can relate to and would probably be what I would feel if I went to E3 myself. For me that's much more entertaining :D

• notyoursavior78

Exactly if I wanted unbiased bullshit I'd go to the ign site. Maybe some of yas would feel better there. I already said I wish the motion fad would go away. Spoony's coverage was entertaining, engaging and hilarious. Plus he didn't hate on every game there. Some of these comments here seem like they were personally offended how Spoony/Noah felt about a certain game.

• mrgphantome

Spoony has every right to express his own opinions, especially on his own website. I also have no qualms with his views opposing mine, in fact I think that's good that his flavors are different than mine as it gives me another view point to analyze. I'm in know way trying to criticize him for that that. In terms of pure content he did awesome in getting as much information has humanly possible. I think overall he did a great job covering E3.

The only criticism I have was that his views were not critical, but cynical. He wasn't their to review E3, he was there report on it and for a report to come across as genuine, the reporter needs to critical while maintaining an open mind.

• Joon_Studios

I don't know if you heard but the 3DS has some impressive launch titles. It's got Resident Evil Revelations which looks a non-main series but still story linking game like Code Veronica. I seriously thought it was on the XBox. There will be Super Street Fighter 4. Metal Gear Solid 2. A game made by Atlus which I am crossing my fingers will be Persona 5 because Persona 4 is my all-time favorite game. Paper Mario 4. There were like 20 developers that are quite famous. This neat because when it comes to third party developers for Nintendo, Nintendo usually has none.

Just wanted to drop and say thank you for sharing your E3 experience, Spoony. I've watched all your videos here and not too surprisingly, I enjoyed them way more than the abomination I witnessed: the G4 E3 coverage on TV…yuck. Should've found other means for E3 coverage at the time. Oh well, just rest up and recuperate…looking forward to part 3 of your FFX review!

• FR MadCow

That's “drop by”. Proof-reading for the loss…considering just “drop” could be taken way out of context. Heh.

• goodguya

I hope one day they will just make a straight up sequel to RE4 and leave the guy with the forearm the size of his head to run about the confusing plot. Leon needs a comeback!

But I digress. MGS2 will not be on it, but MGS3 will be. I think Atlus has confirmed like three franchises, one of which being Persona.

• kayare

Man Spoony, I was digging this until you got to the part about Sonic, at which point I promptly closed the window. Not sure if I'm going to bother giving it another try, since I can go get e3 coverage anywhere that doesn't bitch about things that most people would consider good.

Get this through your head: Sequels are supposed to be like the original. They are SUPPOSED to be the same game with new areas, items, enemies, story, graphical and system improvements, and so on. If you want a different game, then play a different game. People who liked the old Sonic games have been begging Sega for exactly what Sonic 4 is, and have been begging for like a decade. We are happy with what they are showing. If it was something completely different than the old games we would have been pissed off. Its funny, because you were raging over Xcom, but you know what? Xcom is the fault of people like you. Xcom is exactly what you asked for, with how you usually describe sequels. Take a good long look at it. This is what you wanted.

Not only do you whine about sequels needing to be what pretty much amounts to a completely different game, but you bitch incessantly about it. Then you bitch when a series does try something new. You're completely unreleasable. To reiterate: If you don't want the same game but with different stuff, DONT PLAY A SEQUEL. Not a difficult concept.

Its actually so annoying that I had to register an account just to call BS on it. Its sad too, because other than your retarded stance on sequels, you're probably my favorite reviewer. Heck, I wouldn't be putting the effort into calling you out on this if I didn't care.

• MissAshley

You've managed to get me a little excited for Old Republic. Good job! And I LOVED the Sonic rant. I'm of the mind that many people's issues with Sonic 4 lie in the older Sonic games never being all that great originally. Think about it, if Sonic 1 was enjoyable, and Sonic 4 seems like nothing more than an HD clone of Sonic 1, then Sonic 4 should still seem a little good, right?

Wrong, at least from the many hands-on impressions I've read on Sonic 4. And I think the episodic approach shows even Sonic Team isn't confident in the old-school design anymore.

• http://twitter.com/Zack_Frost666 Zack Frost

jedi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

• kayare

1) I've been hearing good things about it, and what I have actually seen pleases me.

2) Whether the original sonic games were great or not is your opinion. Not everyone is going to share that opinion. Sonic 4 was made for people that liked the original games, so it would stand to reason that if you did not like them you wont like this. Not liking it is completely fine. But for Spoony to bash them for doing what the fans have been begging for is just plain dumb.

3) Despite how happy I am with what they are trying to do with the game, I am very worried about it. Sonic Team has had a dismal track record so far, and the whole episodic content thing is completely inappropriate for a classic sonic game. Its kind of like how its completely inappropriate for Blizzard to release Starcraft 2 as separate games, yet they are apparently doing so.

• MissAshley

I don't think he was as “incredibly pissed” about Sonic 4 being a “remake of a 10 year old game” as much as it being a virtual remake of a game that really, really does not hold up well these days. I can go back and play the original Mario, Mega Man, and Bionic Commando games and enjoy myself. Sonic, though?. . .I never understood it in the early 90s and I don't understand it now.

The few parts of the old Sonic games I did like pretty much consisted of the game playing itself.

• MissAshley

See, he probably didn't complain “about MvC3 being MvC2 with Deadpool and 3D graphics” because MvC2 is still fun to him now and probably will be several years from now. Sonic, though. . .Franchises are indeed the life-blood of companies, however over two decades Sega has not seemed to understand how to make the idea of Sonic fun and engaging. And one of the company's answers now is to go back to a formula which according many people who have played Sonic 4 just doesn't work well.

Well, they aren't really realizing it; they're just calling Sonic 4 bad while claiming the original games are still great. But if Sonic 4 is really sooooo much like Sonic 1, what does that say about the original games?

• foodlespane

“Whether the original sonic games were great or not is your opinion. Not everyone is going to share that opinion. Sonic fans embarrassing themselves again. Hey, how about you all get a Genesis and play the original Sonic? Then you'd save money on buying Sonic 4!

• foodlespane

“Get this through your head: Sequels are supposed to be like the original. They are SUPPOSED to be the same game with new areas, items, enemies, story, graphical and system improvements, and so on. If you want a different game, then play a different game.”

It's that kind of thinking that made the “market pie” of gamers so small in the first place. Also, “new areas, items, enemies, story, graphical and system improvements” isn't what Sonic 4 has going for it, you know.

“People who liked the old Sonic games have been begging Sega for exactly what Sonic 4 is, and have been begging for like a decade. We are happy with what they are showing. If it was something completely different than the old games we would have been pissed off.”

It's funny how you forgot to mention the games where Spoony congratulated the developers for keeping core elements while also introducing innovations that make it a sequel, not a mission pack. It must be all the red you were seeing as soon as Spoony stated the oh-so-obvious about Sonic 4, but you're a fanboy like that.

“Its funny, because you were raging over Xcom, but you know what? Xcom is the fault of people like you. Xcom is exactly what you asked for, with how you usually describe sequels. Take a good long look at it. This is what you wanted.”

Yeah, and the first person stagnation, fighting game stagnation, shooter game stagnation and so on from time immemorial are the fault of people like you who lack the perspective to understand that even though nobody's really inventing the wheel here, game innovation to make it more fun goes a long way. Sonic 4 represents Sega raising its hands up and saying, “Fuck this, play the original Genesis game again with enhanced graphics. Capcom can get away with it, why not us?”

“Its actually so annoying that I had to register an account just to call BS on it. Its sad too, because other than your retarded stance on sequels, you're probably my favorite reviewer. Heck, I wouldn't be putting the effort into calling you out on this if I didn't care.”

Nah, you're just a blind, jaded Sonic 4 fan that has forgotten that chart about expectations and disappointments that happens whenever Sega creates Sonic sequels. The Nostalgia Critic had to deal with Sonic cartoon fans the very same way in his review of that retarded series (mostly YouTube poop makers). What is it with Sonic fans and criticism, anyway?

• Ubersnuber

Here's the thing, though; Sonic 4 isn't a clone, it's a hybrid.
Sonic doesn't look like his classic self, he's got the homing attack, his shitty new friends are back, platforming isn't as physics based as the old ones, which were vital for the whole experience.

You're right about Sonic Team, though.

They should just let him die :/

• kayare

This. People have a tenancy to see something that plays relatively the same and cry foul. And its such a bizarre expectation too, because the same exact people bitch when something is changed too much. Like Spoony with xcom, like I mentioned earlier.

Thats one reason I like the Zelda series so much. Even though its gone through some hefty changes, its still more or less the same game it has always been. Spoony would probably say thats a bad thing, but really think about it. Why should it change too much? If I am in the mood for Zelda, I want to play Zelda. If I am in the mood for something else, I will play something else. I'd rather them not fuck up Zelda to match whatever I happen to be in the mood for.

Basically, if you want massive changes out of a series, then you probably don't want to play that series in the first place, and just want something else. So thats where you should be looking: Somewhere else.

• Ubersnuber

“What is it with Sonic fans and criticism, anyway?”
It seems that kayare is able to handle criticism quite well. I think his problem was with the flat-out ignorant part.
As for the rest of the Sonic fans; I have no idea. It's mostly 3d-sonic fans that suffer from this illness, that's all I know.

• kayare

You know whats really funny? Kinda not even really a sonic fan. I played and enjoyed the games when I was younger, and got annoyed at pretty much every game released after Sonic and Knuckles. I replay the genesis games once like every 5 years or so, maybe. But its kind of hard to play through a game and keep interest without new levels and bosses and such. Also, I am really really not in the mood for a quoting “war” or anything, but I guess you at least deserve a response. Here it goes:

[
It's that kind of thinking that made the "market pie" of gamers so small in the first place. Also, "new areas, items, enemies, story, graphical and system improvements" isn't what Sonic 4 has going for it, you know.
]

Theres nothing wrong with innovation. I see new games that come along that do wonderful new things. And that is great. But when I want to play a sonic/zelda/mario/doom/whatever the hell game, I want to play that game. Not a completely different game with the same characters. By changing a series you are basically telling the people that liked your original game that “too bad, were not making anything like this anymore, and no one else is either”

Still, I wont deny your point. Just try to remember that these things aren't mutually exclusive.

[
It's funny how you forgot to mention the games where Spoony congratulated the developers for keeping core elements while also introducing innovations that make it a sequel, not a mission pack. It must be all the red you were seeing as soon as Spoony stated the oh-so-obvious about Sonic 4, but you're a fanboy like that.
]

Actually, I didn't forgot. Those just weren't really relevant to the conversation. Sonic isn't an incredibly complex game that has a lot of places to stick new features. If anything, new features can actually detract from the experience. Sonic runs, jumps, and now apparently has a homing attack. Thats kind of all you really need.

I'll go ahead and let your witty insult slide, since I bet you felt pretty clever when you wrote it. Also, you might want to refrain from automatically assuming things about people so that you don't have to take their point of view into account.

[
Yeah, and the first person stagnation, fighting game stagnation, shooter game stagnation and so on from time immemorial are the fault of people like you who lack the perspective to understand that even though nobody's really inventing the wheel here, game innovation to make it more fun goes a long way. ]

This kinda falls under what I said above. When I play a sonic/mario/whatever game, I expect that experience. Its like if I went and bought some apple juice and found that it had cranberries mixed into it. Sure, that might be “innovation”, and it might even be good. But thats not really what I asked for. Of course, that shouldn't stop people from going out and making cranberry-apple juice, but it would be nice to be able to buy just plain apple juice. Do you see what I am saying here?

[
Nah, you're just a blind, jaded Sonic 4 fan that has forgotten that chart about expectations and disappointments that happens whenever Sega creates Sonic sequels. The Nostalgia Critic had to deal with Sonic cartoon fans the very same way in his review of that retarded series (mostly YouTube poop makers). What is it with Sonic fans and criticism, anyway?

Do you really have to resort to trying to “humiliate” someone online to prove your point? I mean seriously, if you have a good point it should stand on it's own instead of having to associate what I said with a particular annoying demographic of people in order to dilute the meaning.

Seriously, not even really a sonic fan in the first place. In fact, I almost wrote a similar post about spoony's reactions to the new fallout. Its the attitude I dislike, the game it is happening with is mostly irrelevant. I've just gotten so sick of seeing game series I like changed so much that they aren't even fun anymore.

If you want to continue discussing this in a more civil manner, I'm all for it. But please do leave your preconceptions about “sonic fans” at the door. Kay?

• SignNinja

Looks like Spoony has someone new to troll! Final Fantasy fanboys, enjoy your reprieve!

• Joon_Studios

I think it was announced as a sort of Metal Gear Solid 2.5 like Peace Walker. In my opinion I liked Resident Evil 5 more because it was more fun to play with someone. It was an absolute blast. Of course it wasn't scary like past titles. I thought the Lost in Nightmares DLC was scary and fun. Only because I had no ammo. Horror seems to come from the inability to fight back these days. I followed the Resident Evil plotline very deeply. It was interesting. Yes, I read the Archives book. With Resident Evil 4, my only question was, what happened to Spencer's dreamof the T-Virus. It felt like they completeely forgot the plot of the predecsors. RE5 only confirmed that Capcom no longer cared about the T-Virus. But even more upsetting is that now we might never know what happened to Hunk and his sample of the G-Virus. At least with Silent Hill they don't abandon the focus. Only it never makes sence. With Resident Evil they had a nice plot going. From what I saw of the Revelations trailer with Hunk and the zombie it seems Capcom realizes they haven't wrapped up the original plot and are tieing it up now. That's great. Two questions though.
1.Is Steve in that chair.
2.Jill is a brunette again which means a prequal but than wjhy is she out too kill Chris? He saved your god darn life in RE1.

Ah, so you do like Genesis games and replay it from time to time. Obviously, you're one of the people Sega is catering to (as well as AVGN, since he had about the same sentiments when he saw Sonic in his dismal, halfhearted E3 videos with Screwattack). Not everyone will like that, though, and they don't need an attitude adjustment just because you don't agree with them.

“Do you really have to resort to trying to “humiliate” someone online to prove your point? I mean seriously, if you have a good point it should stand on it's own instead of having to associate what I said with a particular annoying demographic of people in order to dilute the meaning.”

“Humiliate”? Man, did you see the replies below you from Sonic fans? It's quite easy to put you in the same box as “Just another Sonic/Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy X” fan. Of course, since you're some sort of retro/sega fanboy that can't take honest impressions and criticisms, we're back to square one on that.

“Seriously, not even really a sonic fan in the first place. In fact, I almost wrote a similar post about spoony's reactions to the new fallout. So let me get this straight… Spoony has shown consistency in his preferences and attitude towards games. I don't always agree with him, but he's very consistent with what he believes is a good game or not. His little rant on Sonic wasn't something that came out of the blue, it's pretty consistent with his pet peeves. You mentioning he should get over his irritation over remakes and sequels is mind-boggling to me because, what, is this the first time you've watched his videos? Of course he'll rant on what happened to Sonic 4, like the way he has millions of times before in similar circumstances. Why didn't you call him out before then, when you allegedly watched them?

Oh, that's right. They weren't relevant to your interests. Now that he struck home with your retrofaggotry (for lack of a better term), then you wail on him like “Meg Ryan” blaming things on Aeon. Yeah, no bias there.

“Is that some sort of code for “I did not bother to read the post” ?”

Once you read the butthurt responses of all the Sonic fans on this one E3 video, it kind of blurs together and people tend to skim. You can't really blame them for that.

Old republic should be a riot. I remember when I heard voice acting for quest dialogue on ever-quest 2, that amazed me, although the cheesy accents were irritating.
Old-Republic hopefully will set a standard for most rpg's. As lets face it, no-one reads quest dialogue unless it's Baldurs Gate or Mass Effect.

Yeah changing original concepts with too hefty a change is always bad. Supreme commander 2 is a fracking good example. Square Enix can hang themselves for what happened. Destroyed the best RTS I have had the privilege to play.

There is sonic colors that is coming out to the Wii and DS and the Wii version looks like fun and probably better then sonic 4.
Only the first level on Sonic 4 is a remake of the original everything else is different.

Shame that tron is not an rpg platformer. That would have been better and fit when it comes to being among civilian npc's.

Final fantasy 8 didn't have boat anchors as weapons unless one of the boss human's do?

I have to call you out on the n64 remake thing. Only two games shown were N64 remakes and one ps2 remake. All the others were new games and none of them have been confirmed for release at the 3DS's launch. resident evil, metal gear solid 3, kingdom hearts, dead or alive 3d, samurai warriors 3d, etc. So don't judge until you know. As for new Nintendo games, there is a Mario kart, Animal crossing, paper Mario, pilot wings resort, steel diver, Kid Icarus: uprising, Nintendo dogs, and cats.

The old republic is not going to change how much I enjoy old rpg's just because it has text. I read the text even if there is voice acting. To me, if you hate reading text then you need to go back to school and learn to appreciate literature because that is what text is in rpg's.

• goodguya

That muscle bound guy from the “dream sequences” used a harpoon and at one point a boat anchor. Or maybe it was just a boat anchor.

• kayare

I can only think of three Anchor users off the top of my head. The dude from FF8, who was so forgettable that I don't even remember his name. Other than that all that comes to mind is May from Guilty Gear, and Captain Murasa “Motherfucking” Minamitsu from Touhou. Both of whom are actually pretty awesome.

XCOM (Or as I call it, Lalala I can't hear you!) is set up to be a letdown. By the developers of Bioshock 2 is a game that features the same time period as Bioshock 2, the camera style research of Bioshock, and more. However, getting past that it could be a good game (just not a good X-COM game). To any hardcore X-COM fans I suggest just covering your ears and talking loud enough that you can't hear anything whenever the phrase XCOM is mentioned. While it looks like a terrible attempt to play off the name X-COM I hope it ends up like Banjo & Kazooie Nuts and Bolts (A sequel that has a sharp change in genre, but is still good. On a side note, I have played Banjo & Kazooie as well as Banjo Tooie, I have right to say that Nuts and Bolts is a true sequel). That is highly unlikely. My only praise for X(-)COM are the characters look funny; whether it is funny haha or funny weird is up to you.

On the Sonic argument, there are three types of opinions on Sonic that would be watching your review. The hardcore Sonic fan (In my opinion, wrong) who thinks Sonic needs a reboot, the Naive people who believe Sonic will fix itself or has already fixed itself, and the others (people like me) who believes Sonic needs to be buried in a box and never spoke of again. Someone mentioned Sonic being a game for the more casual gamers, and while that is true if the series doesn't stop there will be some insane concepts too weird for a Guilty Gear character. Another series that has worn out would be Zelda, and it is getting some weird ideas as well. A navigator, a train conductor, and a skydiver have all been ideas for Link that are getting made. Why? Only so Nintendo can sell another game fanboys will flock to. Seems to be the same with Mario, but the Galaxy series was an actual innovation.

Deus Ex 3 is making a game that doesn't directly tie into the plot of the previous games, but unlike Fallout 3 it does actually have a purpose. Fallout 3, as well as Fallout New Vegas, don't seem to connect to Fallout 1 & 2. This is more prominent in F3 than FNV, as you were on the opposite side of a country and the only returning factions were the Enclave (which seemed to be a repeat of the evil duo. The leader, who is the brains of the operation, and the so-to speak dragon, who is a combat threat.) and the Brotherhood of Steel who served only as a faction to move the plot along. Enough of a fallout 3 rant, back onto Deus Ex 3. The game's cinematics look beautiful and the rpg style sounds great.

Those jedi were unproffessional. They are supposed to supress their emotions, those guy seemed pretty upset about being attacked by Darth Joe. Spoony, you need to pick up a way to defend yourself. That way, you could've taught the space marine from before a lesson. That reminds me of the Space Marine project. Will it be good? Only time will tell.

You know to all those who you complain about Spoony being “to harsh” on the games. You know what he isn't being to harsh he is just being honest. He is giving HIS HONEST opinion. I think one reason Spoony and other reviewers like him get so much hate is because people have forgotten these are user reviews. These reviews are coming from the mouths of the real people that have actually played the game. The problem is big companies have tricked us into thinking they are the voice of the people. IGN, Gamespot, Game Trailers, and G4 are all big companies and review the game according to who gives them the biggest paycheck instead of wether or not the game is really good. Think about if you guys had been there and played Tron (for instance) you most likely would have thought and said the same thing Spoony did (at least that is what I thought when I saw the game it is Prince of Persia in computer instead of desert). And as far as Sonic goes you guys have to remember that very little of the game was originally shown and it did look like it was going to be a completely new 2D Sonic game. To find out that is just a remake (not a new Sonic game with a different story and new locals) it is a shot for shot remake of the original. I think that is mainly what Spoony was saying. Basically he was saying that a shot for shot remake of the game was pointless. I love Sonic and to find out that it is just a remake is very disappointing. And also if they are remaking a Sonic game why remake Sonic and not Sonic 2 or Sonic 3? Sonic 2 and 3 had Super Sonic and Casino Night Zone and Polar Ice Cap zone (respectively). What did Sonic 1 have? Oh yeah Labyrinth Zone *shudders*. Seriously guys ease up on Sponny he is giving a honest un biased review of the games.

I'm sceptic about that Star Wars MMO. The entire concept of MMO doesn't mesh well with gameplay and story you see in a singleplayer game. It sounds more like KotoR with a broad support for Co-Op gameplay (which Bioware games offered since… at least Baldurs Gate 2). It's one thing to promise something new, but Bioware has a good track record, lets see how it turns out.

• http://www.facebook.com/chrigurt Christian Gurtner

There is some voice acting for quests in World Of Warcraft, mostly the more important quests. The problem is, there are so damn many quests there it would take ages to voice them all (and to expand the voice acting pool). I wouldn't object to less quests with a broader scope, but smaller chunks of objectives have their place too.
You can't have everything at once.

• http://www.facebook.com/chrigurt Christian Gurtner

It's funny how the first 3D Sonic game, as bad as it was, was the best of them. Going back to 2D might not be too bad an idea in theory (his 2D handheld outings are pretty decent from what I hear), but it seems to be too little too late. As for the characters, Mario has a boatload of them too but they aren't trying to squeeze them all into every single game. Mario. Bowser. Peach. Everything else is optional. Another lesson the Sonic Team just won't learn.

• http://www.facebook.com/chrigurt Christian Gurtner

Series are always a touchy subject (and you can't please everyone). The Zelda series hasn't really changed much in it's basic concept. You go through dungeons, acquire new items along the way, use them to defeat the bosses, and so on. But many of the games bring changes in subtle ways. Spirit Tracks is an excellent example. It even plays with your expectations at some points, and getting to the dungeons is almost more effort than beating them.

Not to mention the mix of old favorites and new creative items (or twists on old ones. Dual Hookshot? Sign me up!).

If you have an entirely new concept of the core gameplay, make it a different franchise (see Metroid).

calm down, these are what comments forms are for for people to discuss things. Dude I wasn't talking about the people that are simply saying disagreeing with him. I was addressing the fanboys that are flaming him. Opinions are fine trolling and flaming are what I have a problem. As far as defending Spoony's honor I was just trying to provide some sense to the overzealous fanoboys. If I made you think I was being a killjoy I am sorry I wasn't trying to be. I guess I am just used to the “youtube commenters” and these are usually the kind of things I say on Youtube (lol).

• http://twitter.com/Mohia_Keria Mohia Keria

Yes your right, also the technical aspect of the extra audio that has to be downloaded or streamed server side.
Reminds me of a weird thing I saw once. Tried that star-trek on-line and not a single voice had voice acting except this one emergency medical hologram half way through the tutorial. Seemed really out of place.
Warcraft and other mmo's do have a good go-between with the sound bites that play when you talk to an npc. Just saying a simple line can make the difference.

Kinect doesn't work when wearing black?…

Even though that makes for a very racist piece of gaming equipment at least we can write down “Emo proof” as a positive addition to it.

Also: I'm starting to feel bad for WoW, TOR really seems like it will deliver crotch smashing kick next year. Still i don't feel bad enough for it to stop me from trying out myself one smuggler. (Since seriously: If you can survive with a single pair of pistols in a world filled with saber swinging weather control devices then you, my friend are made of win.)

I'm seeing this a link to this video-log follow-up called “VLog 62510 ES Followup” once the video ended, but there isn't any link on the home-/E3-/Vlog-page. It's a nice 60+ minutes long addition to footage of the first 3 days.
Assuming this is a bug/error, now you know.

By the way, love to see you over at E3 Spoony. :)

• sassamura

They are saying that spoony is the worst reviewer ever now.. And I can't really blame them. Spoony crossed the line this time, bashing probably the very best games of this last E3. Man, you can not like Zelda, but one thing is saying that it is not your kind of game and else, another is coming talking shit of the game. And this was a mess, Nintendo showed us probably the best games to come, and spoony bashed them. It's just like I once said to spoony when he released his FF8 review “man, just don't talk about JRPG ever again, cause you don't know a shit about it”. Well As I already said to spoony it's cultural differences, just because you like bald headed muscleman shooting everything without much sense, does not mean there isn't people who like japonese fashion games, well, well.

• BlueGemini

Just watched your final coverage at E3. Pretty nice (^^)

Although I have to disagree about what your thoughts about Sonic 4. Many fans of the series actually love it because its back to basics, back to the old style that what made Sonic really famous unlike those recent Sonic games trying to adapt it in 3D but it seems a failure… BUT its totally okay. I'm not angry or anything on your thoughts about Sonic. Its okay, its your opinion and I respect it. ;)

More than that, I greatly appreciate your efforts you'd done at E3. Two thumbs up for you guys! Keep it up!

Just keep on doing what you like and thank you very much!

Actually Sonic is the only playable character in this.

• icewinds

Once again, my only disapointment with NINTENDO, was that apparently there is and there will not be one single decent RPG for the fucking Wii console. This console is disaster, I mean, what the real, was this solo designed to cansual players, what the fuck, I don't wanna play fucking fitness and shit like that on my fucking console, god bless that at least this new games seems to be more decent games with more solid gameplays. Thanks God they are getting back to the classics, AND the basics, please no more werewolf SHIT on zelda, no more of this inovation ass. Just do what you know to do well. Please stick this way.

• icewinds

About the “KOTOR 3″ as some people are calling it. I must confess that I'm a bit disapointed with it graphics style. I mean come on. When the first KOTOR was released it graphics blew everyone away, it was fantastic realistic by that time, very very detailed faces for that time, amazing, just amazing. But this time they stick by, I don't know, a more cartoon-like graphics, which I think sucked, not that it is bad visuals, it is good in it's way, but I was expecting realistic graphics just like KOTOR1 and 2. About the gameplay that spoony is praising so much, as some people already talked here I'm a little skeptical about it too, I'm like that about ANY MMORPG by the way.

• http://twitter.com/Ictiv György Somorjai

Well i can see you point but don't forget that this is an MMO about Star Wars. I mean we all know how 'good' Galaxies was right? But it still got hold of me for far longer than i want to confess. The thing is that a game like this is up there with the Holy Grail for a Star Wars fan and even casual gamers who like Star Wars will want a piece of this one, the problem is that if they go with a crisis like super realistic (Shogun II like) graphic then the casual gamers will either have to give up on playing this or upgrade their hardware (not to mention lot more expensive game servers).

Though I'm sure this graphic tough on the VGA too, it still is something that you can dumb down for lower configuration and everyone who wants will get to play the game. (Which is goal of any MMO.)

+I kinda like these graphics the way they are, it brings our characteristics more.

• http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/Q7V7ZWGOE6MPIAAF7I2PSL5LPI Mike

the point is to make it not graphic based because there will always be better graphics to best you but by taking this angle the style will never be old and people wont have to complain that their computers will not run it. i think it great! i agree that normally i dislike the cartoon thing but its actually really brilliant and going to keep everyone playing in the long run.

• http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/KNVPRFN4I6T62MS4E24TGCIV2Y Oni

Hey Spoony. Just watched your video of your overall impression of E3. I'd like to say that you're not alone in your disappointment with Sonic 4. Yes, it's good that they returned to their roots and gone back to basics, going back to when Sonic was in fact decent. However, it's horrible that they even HAD to do that in the first place. I constantly hear how Sonic Unleashed could have been the one single title to have done 3D Sonic right, if not for the stupid Were-hog levels and that you had to collect objects to make progress through the game.

Second, the issue with the new Zelda game is also understandable, and I can relate to this. The one Zelda game that I can respect is Majora's Mask, since it did make an attempt to continue the plot after Ocarina of Time, and yes, I was happy that I was playing a Zelda game without Zelda and Ganon. More of the same =/= good. Yes, they're adding a bunch of new tools and the fact that you can now “fully” control Link's sword, but so far, it still looks the same.

As for Fallout: New Vegas. that too is also understandable. I'm thinking that this will turn out to be the “Halo:ODST” of Fallout 3. A bunch of downloadable content on a full retail priced disc. The fact that you guys stumped the presenter of the game during E3 seems to prove that.

I can't really comment on your rant with XCOM because I haven't even heard of the first XCOM. But yeah, I'm not all confident in Strategy games going FPS on me either. I've played Command & Conquer: Renegade for crying out loud (god such a waste of a game)! Also, look what happened with Blizzard's “Starcraft: Ghost” that was announced several years ago. It didn't even happen.

Anyway, have fun at SGC. Continue to evolve into Spoonicus… or whatever your evolutionary form is, and become the great critic that you are destined to be!
